Centenary College Athletics Our Athletic Philosophy

Every coach’s mission is to provide the student-athlete with a competitive program and the opportunity to achieve excellence individually or as part of a team. The phrase “the teaching coach,” committed to the students, best describes our philosophy while maintaining a strong academic profile. As coaches, we serve as both educators and leaders. Centenary’s goal is to maximize the human potential of our student-athletes. Our holistic approach stresses the fundamentals of the games we play as well as the values of responsibility, discipline, and commitment. We know that these principles will translate into victories, but more importantly, they will develop young people with character. Those who compete and graduate become true champions, for they will understand what it means to be committed to excellence.

About Our Athletic Program

At Centenary College we nurture and encourage true competitive integrity. Our school adheres to a strict code of conduct from the recruiting process all the way to the NCAA Championships. Our coaches, administrators and staff members all take an active role in monitoring and insuring our compliance with all NCAA, Conference and College regulations. Centenary sponsors 13 men’s and women’s teams at the Division III level, and our Athletic Department continues to grow. We remain committed to developing our Athletic Department into one of the best small-college programs in the country. With the help of our dedicated coaches, staff and student-athletes we can see that dream come to reality. As a student-athlete, we will ask you to represent the College’s intercollegiate athletics program both on and off the field with integrity, professionalism and competitiveness. During your years at Centenary you will be asked to make sacrifices, but these sacrifices will be well rewarded by relationships and memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Athletic Training and Conditioning The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physicial Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Dana Baffuto. The fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athlete’s seasonal fitness needs.

Weidensaul is beginning her first year as the head coach for the Cyclones this season. Weidensaul served as an assistant coach with the Lions from 2008-12 before taking over as the interim head coach for Janice Luck for four games while she was on maternity leave. During her four games as the head coach, Weidensaul led the Lions to a 2-2 record. Aside from coaching the women’s basketball team at Albright, Weidensaul also served as an assistant coach for the softball team this past spring for the Lions. Beyond her collegiate coaching, Weidensaul also served as the director of the Academic Enrichment Camp, PHEAA-CAPS Program, Hispanic Enrichment Camp, Albright Women’s Basketball Team Camp, and an Athletic Event Manager for Albright College. Prior to becoming a coach, Weidensaul spent four years as a multi-sport athlete at Kutztown University, graduating with a B.A. in Business Administration and Marketing in 2008 and an M.B.A in 2010. During her time as a student-athlete, Weidensaul served as a four-year scholarship starter for the Golden Bears, earning All-PSAC Second Team her senior year after leading her team in scoring with an average 9.9 points per game, a PSAC Player of the Week honor, and helped the 2005-06 team advanced to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Final Four. In addition to basketball, Weidensaul was also a four-year member of the softball team at Kutztown, earning All-PSAC Honors as a starting pitcher with a 43-22 career record, including eight shutouts.

Da Silva joins the Cyclones staff for her first year as an assistant coach this season. Aside

from helping with the women’s basketball team, Da Silva aslo serves as a Resident Director for Reeves Hall at Centenary. In college, Da Silva was a four-year starter and team captain for The College of Saint Elizabeth where she was named the NCAA Division III statistical leader in points allowed per game in 2009 and ranked 13th in assists per game in 2011. Aside from playing basketball, Da Silva was also a member of the women’s soccer and lacrosse team’s at The College of Saint Elizabeth. In 2011, Da SIlva also attended the WBCA “So You Want To Be A Coach” conference for professional development in coaching and administration in basketball in Indianapolis, Ind. Da Silva earned a Bachelor of Arts in Justice Studies from The College of Saint Elizabeth in 2011 and was named the NCAA Woman of the Year Honoree in 2011.

Childs joins the Cyclones as an assistant coach after a college playing career with

Rutgers-Camden where she led the NJAC in steals and ranked 47th nationally during the 2001-02 season with 88 steals, averaging 3.14 a game. Childs then transferred to Morgan State University where she finished her undergraduate degree, graduating with a B.S. in Physical Education with a concentration in Sports Administration. In high school, Childs played three years of varsity basketball for Willingboro High School where she helped lead her team to the 2000 Group 3 State Championship, finishing the season with an overall record of 28-3. Growing up, Childs was the only girl to play in the Midget Football League, starting as a tight end and helping to lead her team to an undefeated season and the championship title. Off the court, Childs also trained in martial arts, earning a third-degree Black Belt in Chinese GoJu and a second place finish in the 1994 New Jersey Open Karate Championship. Currently, Childs is pursuing a MBA from Centenary College and recently became a first-time mother in April of 2012 to a beautiful baby girl Jayla Lynn.

Season Preview The Cyclones women’s basketball program will reboot with a new head coach for the second consecutive year as Rachel Weidensaul assumes the reins for 2012-13. Weidensaul takes over a squad that went 14-12 a year ago hoping the mix of returners and new faces will provide enough to compete for the top spot in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). The 2012-13 team features five women returning from last season and a sixth who has played for the Cyclones prior to last season. Joining the group of returners will be two freshmen, two sophomores, and a junior college transfer to round out the team. Weidensaul arrives in Hackettstown, coming from Albright College where she served as an Assistant Coach from 2008-2012, stepping in as Interim Head Coach for a four game stint last season, going 2-2. Joining Weidensaul on the bench will be assistant coaches Diane Da Silva and Jennifer Childs. Weidensaul, a two-sport standout athlete for the Kutztown University women’s basketball and softball teams will look to four-year performers Danielle Trucksess, Heather Russell and Kellie Rose and senior Kristen Cenicacelaya to lead the 2012-13 team. This year’s crop of seniors have some big shoes to fill with the departure of Cyclones’ All-Time record holders Jen Vasta (points, field goal percentage, assists, steals), Bridget McCann (blocks), and Hannah Ally (free throws), yet look poised to begin a new era in Centenary women’s basketball history. Returning up front for the Cyclones will be Russell and Cenicacelaya, with Rose and Trucksess also seeing time at forward. Trucksess leads the pack of returners in offensive production, averaging 11.9 points per game a year ago. Trucksess served as the deep threat, draining 38 three-pointers, converting at a .330 clip. Russell, Rose, and Cenicacelaya will look to improve on their 3.7, 2.6, and 1.8 points per game respectively.

Season Preview Trucksess, who is returning from injury, will see time as a forward while also seeing a great deal of time at guard. Joining Trucksess at guard will be junior Melissa Kukoda who averaged four points a game last year while striking for ten three-pointers. Weidensaul will also use Kukoda as a point guard controlling the Cyclones tempo. Junior Klarissa Perry returns to the Cyclones after a year away from the court. Perry played in 13 games her freshman year, scoring 20 points and bringing down 12 rebounds in 2010-11. New to the Cyclones at the guard position will be junior transfer from Brookdale Community College Nicole Collins, sophomore transfer from Albright College Kim Osieja, sophomore Natalia Ortega, and freshmen Ally Fugnitti, and Angela Randle. Collins comes to Centenary after playing two years for perennial National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) contender Brookdale CC. Collins averaged six points per game in 2010-11, helping lead the Jersey Blues to a third place finish at the NJCAA National Championship Tournament. “She is a heads up player who can distribute the ball and also score, Weidensaul says of Collins. Weidensaul says Osieja is a leader on the floor who can play any of the guard positions and brings with her the ability to drive the lane. Fugnitti and Randle will aid Centenary by adding quickness and speed while Ortega who comes to Centenary after transferring from Desales University, possesses the skills to hit the outside shot and play stiff defense. Weidensaul is pleased with the progress both the returning players and the newcomers have made through the practice season and through the first scrimmage. She states the returners have already stepped up and claimed ownership of the team after the departure of six seniors from last season.

Season Preview “The returners have already stepped up to prove this is their team. They are focused as a team to win and be successful. Heather (Russell) and Kristen (Cenicacelaya) have stepped up in the post, and Danielle, Melissa, and Kellie all bring a different kind of scoring for us. They have really made this their team.” As for expectations for the 2012-13 Cyclones, Weidensaul believes Centenary has the ability to finish among the top teams in the CSAC. “Although we have things to work on, I definitely think that is in reach.” Aside from the CSAC, the Cyclones will face some non-conference challenges. Centenary opens the season at NJIT, a Division I school out of the Great West Conference. The Cyclones will then travel to Allentown, Pa. to play in the Scotty Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College. Centenary will round out its difficult non-conference schedule on January 3rd, 2013 hosting Kean University who advanced to the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship game a year ago, also earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament. “We have a tough out of conference schedule,” says Weidensaul. “Playing the best teams helps you learn. What we learn from those games, we will bring back to our conference games and make us ten times better.” Weidensaul has named seniors Heather Russell and Kellie Rose as captains, stating both have brought a lot of leadership on and off the court. “I know I can go to either of them to relay a message and they will make sure everyone is on the same page,” says Weidensaul. The Cyclones open the season on the road against the aforementioned NJIT on November 15th, with the home opener slated for Monday, November 26th versus New York University at 6 pm. Centenary begins the CSAC portion of the schedule Thursday, November 29th at 7 pm when the Cyclones host Rosemont College. The 2012-13 season brings a new look Cyclones’ team from the coaching staff to the team. The new look Cyclones will seek to also create new success, beginning November 15th.

Centenary College Turf Fund “It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011. Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition. To learn more about this exciting project or to make a contribution to The Cyclone Athletic Fund or The Athletic Turf Field Project, call Simone Knaaps at (908) 852-1400 ext. 2336 or email knaaps@centenarycollege.edu.

About the CSAC

The Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) – formerly known as the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) – was formed to meet the needs of small, private, four-year colleges in eastern Pennsylvania. As the institutions’ athletic programs continued to grow, it became increasingly necessary to address individual and collective concerns about intercollegiate athletics.

In November 1991, 10 charter member institutions with similar philosophies aligned to provide athletic competition for student-athletes from institutions with similar philosophies. The conference was formed to collectively recognize the importance of intercollegiate athletics in an educational setting and to increase institutional support without compromising academic integrity. These charter members voted unanimously to name the new conference the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), and on February 3, 1992, a press conference was held at Philadelphia’s Veteran’s Stadium to officially announce the formation of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), with competition to begin in the 1992-1993 academic year. The first Constitution was drafted in June 1992 and in April 1993, the conference was granted Affiliate Membership in the NCAA. In its inaugural year, the conference sponsored 12 championships; today, the CSAC sponsors 17 championships in 15 sports. The conference qualifies and maintains Automatic Qualifiers (AQs) in 13 sports, sending the conference champion to NCAA Championships in Field Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Men’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Softball and Men’s and Women’s Tennis.

Members of the CSAC wholly embrace the NCAA Division III “student first” philosophy by ensuring that institutions place the overall educational experience and successful completion of academic programs above all else. For this reason, student-athletes are treated no differently than any member of the student population. CSAC members embrace gender equity among student-athletes and are committed to providing athletics programs that are equitable for both genders.

The CSAC is also wholly dedicated to service in the community, as the league has participated in such initiatives as Habitat for Humanity and the Eastern Polar Plunge, sponsored by the PA Special Olympics. Each CSAC member school also participates in various service initiatives both campus-wide and in their communities.
