Centenary College Athletics Our Athletic Philosophy
Every coach’s mission is to provide the student-athlete with a competitive program and the opportunity to achieve excellence individually or as part of a team. The phrase “the teaching coach,” committed to the students, best describes our philosophy while maintaining a strong academic profile. As coaches, we serve as both educators and leaders. Centenary’s goal is to maximize the human potential of our student-athletes. Our holistic approach stresses the fundamentals of the games we play as well as the values of responsibility, discipline, and commitment. We know that these principles will translate into victories, but more importantly, they will develop young people with character. Those who compete and graduate become true champions, for they will understand what it means to be committed to excellence.

Athletic Training and Conditioning The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physicial Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Dana Baffuto. The fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athlete’s seasonal fitness needs.

Matt Klank is entering his ninth season as head coach of the Centenary men’s lacrosse program.
The 2012 squad found themselves in the CSAC Tournament for the first time since 2009 as they took home the fourth and final seed in the quarterfinals. Unfortunately, the Cyclones had to take on the #6 ranked team in the nation Cabrini Cavaliers where they lost 18-3 to end their 2012 run. The Cyclones finished the season at 6-9 overall, including a 4-3 conference mark. The Cyclones offense was led by Cameron Gunn who was named First Team All-Conference after finishing the season ranked 12th in the nation in points per game at 4.67 while tying a program single-game record of points with 13 against Rosemont on April 21st. Gunn was helped out by his offensive counterpart Conor Nolan who was named Honorable Mention All-Conference after he finished the season ranked 13th in the nation in assists per game with 2.2. Nolan also picked up 33 assists on the season, enough to put him in second place All-Time with 86 career assists, only 40 behind the leader Reese Baillie.
None of the Cyclones wins this season could have been possible however if it wasn’t for the tremendous performance by Centenary’s Second Team All-Conference goalie, Kyle McVay. The senior goalie finished the season ranked 11th in the nation in save percentage with a .633, setting a program single-season record above his .627 from last season. McVay also set the single-season record for goals against average this season, finishing the year with an 8.12. The Cyclones had six All-Conference honors, including one First-Team, two Second-Team, and three Honorable Mention honorees. In 2011, the team went 6-7 overall and 1-5 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). Despite numerous injuries to key players, the Cyclones went toe-to-toe with each of their CSAC opponents, as four of their conference losses were by seven goals or fewer. Sophomores Conor Nolan and Robert Nuzzolese were each named Second Team All-CSAC Midfield and Attack, respectively. Junior goalie Kyle McVay and sophomore defender Sean Lowe received Honorable Mention accolades. McVay had a career season, posting career-highs in minutes (583:30), saves (141), save percentage (.627) and goals against average (8.64). He set Centenary single-season records in GAA and save percentage and ranked 13th in save percentage, 27th in saves per game and 66th in goals against average in the final national statistics. He led CSAC in saves per game and ranked third in save percentage and ninth in goals against average. Senior Joe Swantkoski finished his career with the fourth-highest goals total in program history after leading the squad in scores (36) and points (38), both career-highs.
The 2010 squad finished 6-8, including 1-5 in the CSAC. Three of the Cyclones’ five conference losses were by two goals or fewer. Centenary used only two seniors, co-captains Jason Rieg and Eddie Montalvo, but the young players came through as Nolan (30 goals, team-high 40 assists, team-high 70 points), Nuzzolese (25 goals, seven assists) and Lowe (62 groundballs, team-high 30 caused turnovers) all played above their years. Rieg and Nolan earned First Team All-CSAC status, while Montalvo took home Second Team honors and Lowe received Honorable Mention accolades. As a team, Centenary was given the CSAC Sportsmanship Award. Rieg also received United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) 2010 Scholar All-American honors, one of just 70 Division I, II and III student-athletes to earn the award. The 2009 campaign was one of Klank’s best coaching jobs, as he guided an injury-plagued team, with only 16 student-athletes on the roster, to a 6-9 record, including a 4-2 mark in the CSAC. The Cyclones finished the season as the third-seed in the conference tournament, falling at Marywood in the first round. In 2008 the Cyclones finished the year as the third-seed in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) with a 5-3 mark, including three straight victories to close out the season, before falling in the conference semi-finals. Klank came to Centenary in 2005, following four seasons at Drew University as its assistant coach and offensive coordinator. Prior to joining Drew’s staff, Klank was an assistant at Villanova University (1998-2000) as well as at Montclair State University following his graduation in 1997. Klank has also had some experience at the high school level, as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Montclair Kimberly Academy from 1995-97.
Klank began his collegiate playing career at Drexel University in 1992. His freshman season he was the program’s top scorer. After another year with the Dragons, he transferred to Montclair State for his final two years of eligibility. He received such honors as the ECAC Most Valuable Player and All-New Jersey First-Team in 1994. Klank also led the Red Hawks in scoring in his two years at MSU. A graduate of Montclair State in 1997, Klank earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Commercial Recreation and Tourism. He currently lives in North Caldwell, N.J. with his wife Marisel and their daughter Ashley Elizabeth.
Brian Yepez enters his first year as an assistant coach with the Cyclones after a four-year career as a starting attack at Lasell College.
During his four years with the Lasers, Yepez scored a total 94 career points to put him in 12th place in Lasell College history. After being named Rookie of the Year his freshman year, Yepez helped lead his team to the ECAC Tournament during his sophomore season where they took home a 10-5 victory in the semi-finals over Plymouth State. His senior season, Yepez led the Lasers with 20 goals and 14 assists, while earning 23 groundballs to earn a spot on Second Team All-Pilgrim League as well as the opportunity to play in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) East vs. West Game. Aside from his playing experience, Yepez also served as an assistant coach for Wellesley High School in Massachusetts as well as a head coach for Wellesley Town Pride League from 2010-2012. Yepez earned a B.A. in Communication from Lasell in 2011, majoring in journalism and media writing with a minor in sociology.
Season Preview The 2013 Centenary Cyclones Men’s Lacrosse team has only one expectation this season— to stay the course and improve every day. “There are going to be peaks and there are going to be valleys in every game and throughout the season as a whole,” said head coach Matt Klank. “I want my guys to never get too high or get too low—just stay the course and get better with every practice and every game.” The Cyclones are looking to take the next steps towards a conference championship this season after finishing 6-9 overall and 4-3 in the CSAC in 2012. There’s a certain buzz building around the men’s lacrosse team that hasn’t been present in recent history due to the pieces of the 2013 roster already in place. This season the Cyclones are returning their top six scorers from a year ago and it begins with co-captains Cameron Gunn and Conor Nolan. Gunn, who transferred to Centenary last season and was named a captain within a month, had a breakout season for the Cyclones leading the team in goals (38) and points (70) en route to a First Team All-Conference selection. Meanwhile Nolan, a three-year captain for Centenary, continued his fantastic career leading team in assists (32) and finished second on the team in points (59) resulting in an Honorable Mention nod. In addition to the fire power of Gunn and Nolan, the Cyclones also welcome back All-Conference Honorable Mention member Robert Nuzzolese who finished second on the team with 32 goals. They are also happy to return their groundball leader and top faceoff man, Joshua Caven, who also finished fourth on the team in scoring with 23 points.
Season Preview Defensively the Cyclones will look to the veteran leadership of senior Sean Lowe who earned Second Team All-Conference honors a year ago. Teaming with Lowe will be Patrick Johnston who returns after a stellar freshman season that saw him earn Honorable Mention honors, as he led the team with 30 caused turnovers. Centenary will also look to junior transfer Nicholas Perkalis and sophomores Kyle Peters, Nick Mazzeo and Brock Mininger to bolster the defense. Even with those players returning, the thing that coach Klank believes will set this team apart is the drastically improved depth of squad from top to bottom. “The depth we have this year is going to allow us to play the way we want to…fast,” said Klank. The Centenary depth is evident with the fact that Klank expects to play 20-25 players per game. In previous years, specifically 2012, the Cyclones would play a tremendous first half but would tire in the second half leading to some disappointing finishes. However, this season Centenary looks to run two lines of offensive midfielders as oppose to one, giving many players a much needed rest throughout the course of the game. Furthermore the Centenary depth is the key factor in deciding how far this team will go in the season. With a first unit comprised of mostly returners that Klank believes is just as good as anyone in the conference, he thinks the second unit is going is determine just how this year will play out. “Every good team has depth and good teams are able to use those their second unit without a big drop off in production. If we develop ours, we’re going to be where we want to be at the end of the season.”
Season Preview The depth that Centenary values so much comes in the form of both veteran leadership and a large number of new comers, specifically at midfield and attack. Seniors Anthony Ciaston and Michael Stephenson and junior Steve Orsini will bring significant upper class experience at the midfield position and will be depended on to help transition some of the newcomers in. Heading the class of newcomers of midfielders is Joey DeBiasse. DeBiasse, a lefty, transferred to Centenary halfway through the year and has already established himself as arguably the team’s most polished player. Blessed with a rifle of a shot, he also has shown his ability to dodge and create space when moving towards the cage. In addition to DeBiasse, fellow freshmenRyan Ramsey, Kyle Brown and Luke Tremont will also compete for playing time. At attack Klank expects similar veteran leadership out of fifth year senior Jeff Prudente. Prudente, who was redshirted, has improved tremendously over his time at Centenary and possesses a high lacrosse IQ that will undoubtedly help the newcomers along. With the help of Prudente, freshmen Anthony Biango, Trevor Krupinski and Conor Martin could also see some playing time if they continue to develop. With the other positions rich in both numbers and ability, there is a bit of a question mark between the pipes after losing who coach Klank called ‘probably the best goalie to ever play at this college’, Kyle McVay to graduation. While losing a Second Team All-Conference goalie might appear like a crippling weakness on paper, Klank views the goalie position as a strength with sophomore Grant Nice and freshman Kevin Switzer.
Season Preview In Nice, they return a goalie that has experience, as he played last season when McVay was going through injuries. With Switzer the Cyclones bring in a goalie that has pushed Nice throughout the off-season and who has created a real competition for the starting job. While heading into the season there is no clear-cut starter, Klank expects the early scrimmages to help one emerge. Juxtapose to last season, the Cyclones have an extremely conducive schedule in 2013. Cyclone Field, the lone grass field in the conference, will play host to 10 of the 14 games on the schedule this season, including seven straight games to begin the season. “I feel good for these seniors who have an opportunity to play a lot of games in front of their home crowd,” said Klank. “Playing at home and having the only grass field in the conference is going to be huge for us.” Looking ahead to the season, Centenary opens with an improved Alvernia on February 27th and then plays two big out of conference games with Lebanon Valley College and Richard Stockton coming to Hackettstown. Klank expects the season to really ramp up beginning with a tough game against Scranton on March 30th, before arguably the most important game of the season—the opening conference game against Gwynedd-Mercy. “Gwynedd finished second in the conference last year and although they lost some talent they have a nice class coming in,” said Klank. “This game is going to be the one that sets the tone for the remainder of the season.” Dating back to 2008 the Cyclones have recorded six wins in each season; however 2013 could be the year they break down that six-win barrier. With a deep, talented roster and a favorable schedule, this expectation-free team is geared to make a strong play off push. “We can’t worry about what’s down the line or what people expect from us. We just need to get better every day,” said Klank. “We have a long way to go but the parts are definitely in place.”

In Memory Of Newtown, Conn. In memory of all those lost in the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting back on December 14, 2012, the Centenary College men’s lacrosse team will be wearing “Town of Newtown” memorial stickers on every helmet this season. The tragic event took the lives of 27 members of Sandy Hook Elementary School and injured two and was named the second-deadliest school shooting behind the Virginia Tech massacre of 2007. The memory of all those lost of December 14th will forever remain and the Cyclones hope to keep the awareness alive this season with the memorial stickers on every players helmet.
Centenary College Turf Fund “It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011. Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition. To learn more about this exciting project or to make a contribution to The Cyclone Athletic Fund or The Athletic Turf Field Project, call Simone Knaaps at (908) 852-1400 ext. 2336 or email knaaps@centenarycollege.edu.

About the CSAC
The Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) – formerly known as the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) – was formed to meet the needs of small, private, four-year colleges in eastern Pennsylvania. As the institutions’ athletic programs continued to grow, it became increasingly necessary to address individual and collective concerns about intercollegiate athletics.
In November 1991, 10 charter member institutions with similar philosophies aligned to provide athletic competition for student-athletes from institutions with similar philosophies. The conference was formed to collectively recognize the importance of intercollegiate athletics in an educational setting and to increase institutional support without compromising academic integrity. These charter members voted unanimously to name the new conference the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), and on February 3, 1992, a press conference was held at Philadelphia’s Veteran’s Stadium to officially announce the formation of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), with competition to begin in the 1992-1993 academic year. The first Constitution was drafted in June 1992 and in April 1993, the conference was granted Affiliate Membership in the NCAA. In its inaugural year, the conference sponsored 12 championships; today, the CSAC sponsors 17 championships in 15 sports. The conference qualifies and maintains Automatic Qualifiers (AQs) in 13 sports, sending the conference champion to NCAA Championships in Field Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Men’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Softball and Men’s and Women’s Tennis.

Members of the CSAC wholly embrace the NCAA Division III “student first” philosophy by ensuring that institutions place the overall educational experience and successful completion of academic programs above all else. For this reason, student-athletes are treated no differently than any member of the student population. CSAC members embrace gender equity among student-athletes and are committed to providing athletics programs that are equitable for both genders.
The CSAC is also wholly dedicated to service in the community, as the league has participated in such initiatives as Habitat for Humanity and the Eastern Polar Plunge, sponsored by the PA Special Olympics. Each CSAC member school also participates in various service initiatives both campus-wide and in their communities.
