Centenary sponsors 13 men’s and women’s teams at the Division III level, and our Athletic Department continues to grow. Athletic Training and Conditioning The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physicial Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Dana Baffuto. The fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athlete’s seasonal fitness needs.

Kim Broking completed her fourth season as head coach of the Centenary College softball
program. She has set program records in conference victories during each of her four seasons and has an overall record of 113-57 record, including a 73-15 mark in CSAC action. She has guided her team to four-consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournaments including two consecutive CSAC Championships, sending the Cyclones to two straight NCAA Tournament appearances in 2011 and 2012. Centenary’s most recent trip to the NCAA Tournament produced school history as the Cyclones defeated Moravian 3-0 in the opening game marking the first ever NCAA Tournament win in program history. The 2012 season was highlighted by the Cyclone’s second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and history making win over Moravian College, yet many more accomplishments were achieved. Coach Broking led Centenary to a 27-16 overall record and 19-3 in the CSAC. The Cyclones earned the top seed in the CSAC Tournament, a tournament Centenary would host for the first time. The Cyclones raced through the tournament, going 3-0 behind the pitching of Roxanne Keelan and the bat of Caitlin Veverka. Keelan notched all three wins for Centenary in the tournament, while Veverka paced the offense with three home runs and ten RBI in the tournament including a grand slam in the championship game against Neumann.
The performance of the 2012 team yielded numerous awards for Coach Broking and the Cyclones. For the second year in a row a Centenary player earned CSAC Player of the Year honors as Veverka was named Co-Player of the Year after batting .471 with nine home runs, 53 runs scored, and 48 RBI. Meagan Madsen was named CSAC Pitcher of the Year for her efforts in helping lead the Cyclones to the top team ERA in the conference. Coach Broking was named CSAC Coach of the Year, her second Coach of the Year award in her four years. Five Cyclones were awarded with postseason All-CSAC First or Second team honors with Madsen and Veverka being named to the First Team. Keelan, Cara Montferrat, and Caitlyn Dean were named to the All-CSAC Second Team while the remainder of the starting lineup earned Honorable Mention accolades. Veverka’s incredible season earned her numerous awards in addition to her CSAC Co-Player of the Year. Veverka was named the CSAC Tournament MVP, named to the NCAA Union, N.J. Regional All-Tournament Team, and the NFCA Division III East Region First Team. The Cyclones went 26-12 during the regular season, including a 19-3 mark in CSAC, setting a program-record in conference victories. CC placed second in the CSAC to earn a first-place bye in the conference tournament. The team went 2-0 on the first day of the event and needed just one win to reach the NCAA Tournament. A loss to Neumann set up a one-game, winner-take-all contest with the Knights for the CSAC Championship. The Cyclones rallied from a six-run deficit and eventually won in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded single by Olsen. Thanks to the first CSAC Championship in program history, Centenary earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth.
Sophomore Cara Montferrat added to her trophy list with 2011 CSAC Player of the Year honors. She also earned First Team All-CSAC Catcher and First Team National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-East-Region Catcher accolades. Montferrat was joined on the CSAC First Team by junior outfielder Caitlin Veverka and senior pitcher Kristin Durborow. Veverka also earned First Team NFCA All-East-Region accolades. Senior Sarah Olsen and freshman Meagan Madsen earned Second Team All-CSAC Utility and Pitcher honors, respectively, and freshman Katie Ciecwisz, junior Jen Vasta and seniors Nicole Fleming and Ali Knapp earned All-CSAC Honorable Mention accolades. Vasta was named Third Team NFCA All-East-Region Outfield. Off the field, CC took home 11 CSAC All-Academic Team honors and Knapp and Vasta each earned CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District 2 Second Team accolades. In 2010, Centenary went 30-14 and 18-4 in CSAC action, surpassing 2009’s totals of 27 and 17, respectively, while setting a program record in wins. The 2010 squad was eliminated in the CSAC Tournament on the second day of action by Cabrini but earned a berth to the ECAC South Tournament, where the Cyclones lost a heartbreaker to three-time defending champion Misericordia, 1-0. Montferrat was named CSAC Rookie of the Year, First Team All-CSAC Catcher, National Fastball Coaches Association (NFCA) Third Team All-American and NFCA First Team All-Region. Durborow led the pitching staff with a 20-6 record and 207 strikeouts, both program single-season bests. She earned First Team All-CSAC Pitcher and NFCA Second Team All-Region honors. Veverka also received NFCA Second Team All-Region accolades, as well as All-CSAC Honorable Mention. Fleming earned First Team Outfield and Olsen was named Second Team Utility. Sophomore Danielle Dundas, Knapp and freshmen Brianne McManus and Kelly O’Dell were all given Honorable Mention accolades.
The team had a banner year in Broking’s first season as head coach, setting then-program records for wins (27) and conference wins (17). The Lady Cyclones earned a berth to the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship as the second-seed. After rain cut the tournament short, Centenary was named the second-place winner along with Immaculata. But the Cyclones’ season was not over, as they earned the program’s first-ever berth to the ECAC Tournament. Centenary split on the first day of action, but then won two consecutive games the second day to force a one game, winner-take-all match with Misericordia for the championship. Although the Cougars prevailed in a close contest, 3-1, Broking had put Centenary on the map as a prominent softball program. Broking returned to Centenary after a very successful six year coaching stint (2002-06, 2008) at Montclair State University. Prior to that, she served as assistant coach at Centenary for one year (2007). While on the staff at MSU, Broking was in charge of all aspects of the team’s pitching staff. She also oversaw the strength and fitness components for the program while coordinating the team’s fundraising events for their annual spring trip. During her tenure the team compiled a record of 207-58. In 2008 the program won the New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament after going undefeated in conference play, finishing with a record of 18-0. MSU then went on to the NCAA tournament as the No. 1 seed. Broking and her assistants were named the 2008 Regional Coaching Staff of the Year, one of the top honors awarded to a staff. In addition to her coaching experience at the college level, Broking has handled administrative duties such as coordinating student-athlete study halls, assisting with academic advisement and serving as a mentor to the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).
During her playing career, Broking was a four-year starter and letterwinner for Montclair State from 1998-2001. In her final season, she batted a team-best .437 as the Red Hawks won 36 games and claimed the ECAC South Division III crown. Broking set a school record with 1,048 career putouts as an infielder, and tied the school standard with 145 career RBI. For her career, she batted .404 with 216 hits and 103 runs scored in 174 games, including 56 doubles, while assisting on 96 outs from her first base position. She went 17-2 as a pitcher, with a 2.91 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 173 innings. A two-time All-NJAC First Team All-Star, Broking was also selected as the 2001 MSU Outstanding Female Athlete, the 2001 ECAC South Region MVP and was named the Dioguardi Scholarship Award winner. Broking holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Physical Education (2002) and a Master of Arts in Physical Education-Exercise Science (2008), both from Montclair State. She also holds a pair of Coaching Certificates, one from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (Certified Specialist) and the other from the NFCA.
Sarah Olsen completed her first season as Kim Broking’s assistant in 2012. Olsen
helped lead the Cyclones to their second consecutive CSAC Championship and second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Cyclones made program history by winning their first ever NCAA Tournament game by defeating Moravian College in the opening game of the NCAA Union, N.J. Regional by a score of 3-0. Olsen, a standout for the Cyclones from 2008-2011 was named to the All-CSAC team in 2009 and second team All-CSAC in 2010 and ’11. Olsen currently stands third in all-time hits for the Cyclones (138), fourth in doubles (22) and second in all-time wins (28), strikeouts(298) and shutouts (11), while posting a career earned run average of 2.92. Olsen has been honored by numerous player and pitcher of the week awards during her Centenary career. Prior to Centenary, Olsen was a highly honored player for Pope John XXIII Regional High School, where she played varsity softball all four years, serving as team captain her senior year. Olsen has been named First Team All-West Jersey, First Team All-League, First Team All-Area and Second Team Parochial All-State during her high school career. Olsen earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Centenary College in 2011 and resides in Lake Hopatcong, N.J.
Caitlin Veverka joins the Centenary coaching staff after a four-year career as one
of the Cyclones best student-athletes in program history. Named the 2012 CSAC Player of the Year, First Team NFCA All-East Region, CSAC Championship MVP, and NCAA Union, N.J. All-Tournament Team, Veverka helped lead the Cyclones to two consecutive CSAC Championship titles and the program’s first ever NCAA victory in 2012. Veverka stands atop Centenary All-Time record books as the career leader in homeruns (27), doubles (41), hits (201), runs (159), stolen bases (53), and at bats (343) as well as single-season records in batting average (.471), hits (66), doubles (23), triples (5), homeruns (13), total bases (118), runs (53), and stolen bases (30). Off the field, Veverka was named a three time CSAC All-Academic Team and a 2012 NFCA Scholar Athlete for her academic performance. Aside from playing softball, Veverka played four years on the Centenary women’s soccer team where she helped lead the Cyclones to a 2010 CSAC Championship and was named to an All-Conference team each year. Veverka graduated from Centenary in 2012 with a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management.
Season Preview Coming off their second consecutive CSAC Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament, the 2013 Centenary College softball team is looking for another history setting season this year with 10 of their 14 players from last season returning to the roster. Despite losing the team’s top two hitters from the 2012 season in Caitlin Veverka and Gabrielle Pellegrino, the Cyclones will turn towards the 2011 All-American captain Cara Montferrat to step up and make a solid impact this season. Over her three year career for the Cyclones, Montferrat is averaging .392 at the plate and had two seasons over .400 prior to an injury early in the 2012 season. Along with her team leading average, Montferrat currently holds the Centenary All-Time records in RBI’s (134), OBP (.490), walks (68), slugging percentage (.733), fielding percentage (.989), and putouts (777). Joining Montferrat as captain to the 2013 squad will be senior Brianne McManus who finished the 2012 season with a .333 average including eight doubles, two triples, a homerun, 15 walks and 26 RBI. Despite missing her sophomore season due to injury, McManus’ experience brings a solid foundation for the Cyclones infield this year. “Cara and Brianne have been captains for several years, they know what is necessary to take us to the next level” said Head Coach Kim Broking on her senior captains. Looking to fill the vacant spot in centerfield this year will be Caitlin Dean who stepped up big for the Cyclones last season in right and is expected to be a solid leader for the Cyclones outfield. In her first season with the Cyclones last year, Dean posted up a .319 average with six doubles, three triples, a pair of homeruns and 22 RBI while stealing four bases. Also hoping to step up into a big leadership spot this year will be sophomore Erin Walsh who looks to take over as the team’s shortstop. Serving mostly as the team’s designated player last season, Walsh posted up a .256 average with eight doubles, two homeruns, and nine walks and looks to make a strong impact this season as a sophomore.
Season Preview “We’re looking forward to a few returners who are taking on new leadership positions on the field, including Cait Dean and Erin Walsh” said Broking on her new leaders for the 2013 season. Joining Montferrat in the battery this year will be a pair of returners that have made a tremendous impact on the pitching staff and look to step up once again for the Cyclones this season. Last year’s CSAC Pitcher of the Year Meagan Madsen returns to the circle for the Cyclones as a junior after posting up a 3.85 ERA with 11 wins and 59 strikeouts in 119.1 innings of work. Joining Madsen is senior Roxanne Keelan who put up a 4.12 ERA with 16 wins and 78 strikeouts in 142 innings played as well as a perfect game against Rosemont on March 23rd. Rounding out the returning Cyclones infield with Walsh and McManus will be Katie Ciecwisz who started all 43 games at second base for the Cyclones last year and posted up a .291 average with 12 doubles, a triple, 23 RBI, and went a perfect 5-5 on stolen bases. Sophomore Jessica Curtis will also look to be an asset off the bench for the Cyclones after playing in 18 games last year from the bench where she picked up a pair of hits and an RBI. The outfield will look to split Dean in center with returners Samantha Belmonte and Morgan Huizenga this season. Belmonte returns to left after playing 39 games last season where she only had two errors and went a perfect 6-6 in stolen bases for the Cyclones. Huizenga looks to step up as a starter this season after appearing in 15 games last year without recording an error. The Cyclones will also be adding a lone newcomer to the squad in Samantha Sysak who will fill in as utility player for the team this season. Sysak comes to the Cyclones with two years of experience on the women’s soccer team looking to break in as a mult-sport athlete.
Season Preview “Everyone needs to step up this year. Each one of the players is an impact player and we will work hard to exceed expectations” said Broking on her expectations for her team this season. After finishing the 2012 season as the CSAC Champions with a 27-16 record including the program’s first ever NCAA Tournament victory, the Cyclones are hoping to continue their winning ways this season with a very tough schedule. The Cyclones will open the 2013 season with nine of their first 11 games at home, including six games in conference. In only their second game of the season, the Cyclones will look to square off against Neumann University who they took down in the 2012 CSAC Championship and always look to provide a competitive set of games. As the schedule progresses, the Cyclones move out of conference to take on highly competitive teams such as Moravian College and Rowan University, both teams that the Cyclones played in the 2012 NCAA Union, N.J. Regional Tournament. Moving forward, the Cyclones will also take on the winner of the region as they travel to Montclair State University to take on the Red Hawks. “We are excited about our strength of schedule this season. We like to play against good competition and that is what we are hoping for this year.” Joining Coach Broking on staff this year is returning Assistant Coach Sarah Olsen for her second season, as well as last year’s 2012 CSAC Championship MVP Caitlin Veverka as a first time assistant.
Season Preview Despite winning the CSAC Championship the past two years, each season is a new challenge as the Cyclones hope to continue to improve and make program history. “We are not thinking about last season. We are only looking forward to the upcoming competitions and we are in a good situation. We are already used to working hard to achieve our goals and we know how to push each other. Overall we know what we need to work very hard to make it back to the conference tournament and that is what we are planning to do.�

2011 CSAC Championship The Cyclones made history in the 2011 season when they won their first ever Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship, but it was no easy task as they took down three-time defending champion Neumann University 12-11 back on May 7, 2011. The Lady Cyclones found themselves trailing 2-0 after the top of the first inning. Weather then delayed the game almost three hours, and when the two teams got back on the field Centenary got on the board thanks to an RBI single by senior Ali Knapp, scoring fellow classmate Nicole Fleming. But Neumann seemingly took control of the game with five runs in the third inning to take a commanding 7-1 advantage.In the bottom of the third, Montferrat crushed a ball to deep right field for a solo shot, her 10th of the season. Freshman Katie Ciecwisz and Olsen each singled and Ciecwisz came home on an error by Neumann’s first baseman. But the Knights were able to get out of the inning without further damage. In the next inning, however, junior Caitlin Veverka hit a two-run bomb to left field, scoring junior Gabrielle Pellegrino, and Olsen hit an RBI single to score Vasta, cutting NU’s lead to 7-6.
2011 CSAC Championship But the Knights bounced back, scoring two in the top of the fifth to increase their advantage to 9-6. After two scoreless frames, Centenary’s bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth. The Cyclones loaded the bases and Ciecwisz brought Veverka and Vasta home with a two-RBI single. Fleming then plated Montferrat and Ciecwisz scored on the play on another NU error. Knapp added another run with an RBI double as CC built an 11-9 lead heading to the top of the seventh.Neumann was down but not out, however, as the Knights scrapped out two runs with two outs in the top of the seventh to tie the game, setting up Olsen’s heroics as Centenary won the CSAC Tournament. Senior Kristin Durborow and freshman Meagan Madsen each pitched for the Cyclones as Madsen recorded her 14th win of the year. Unfortunately the Cyclones dropped their first two games in the 2011 NCAA Tournament in Ithaca, N.Y., capping an unbelievable season with a final 29-13 record including a program best 19-3 conference mark.
2012 CSAC Championship The 2012 season marked a year of program firsts for the Cyclones who won their second straight conference championship, picked up their first ever NCAA tournament victory, and Head Coach Kim Broking earned her 100th career victory. Centenary finished the regular season at 23-14 and 19-3 in the CSAC, earning the top seed and the right to host the CSAC Championship Tournament for the first time in program history. The Cyclones watched Marywood knock off Neumann in the opening game of the tournament held at Hackettstown High School before taking the field vs. Baptist Bible. As she had done all season, Caitlin Veverka led the Centenary offense, blasting two homers in the game, recording six RBI in the contest as the Cyclones outlasted a pesky Defenders’ team 15-9. Cara Montferrat and Brianne McManus also smashed balls deep over the fence to aid Roxanne Keelan to the win. The Cyclones met up with Marywood in the winner’s bracket game and found themselves in a game long fight. The Pacers scored first, pushing across two runs in the top of the first inning against Keelan. Centenary answered right back, countering with three runs in the bottom of the inning. McManus had a two-run double and Caitlyn Dean plated the third run with an RBI single to give Centenary the lead.
2012 CSAC Championship The Cyclones added another run in the fourth but the Pacers tied the game in the top of the seventh with two runs setting the stage for Dean to deliver her second big hit of the game in the bottom of the inning. With one out and the game tied, Dean smashed an Alexandra Stine pitch over the left field fence and bleachers for a walk-off home run sending the Cyclones to the CSAC Championship Game. Centenary and Neumann matched up in the Championship Game as they had a year ago with Keelan starting in the circle for Centenary and Rachel Purpuro for the Knights. Both Keelan and Purpuro kept their opponents off the board through three and a half innings, until Centenary struck big in the bottom of the fourth. The Cyclones rallied for six runs with the big hit coming via a grand slam off the bat of Veverka, giving Keelan and Centenary a cushion. Neumann scratched back for two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Cyclones were able to stave off an extended rally, walking away with a 6-2 win and a second consecutive CSAC Title. Caitlin Veverka was rewarded for her performance as the CSAC Championship MVP.
2012 CSAC Championship With the CSAC Championship the Cyclones were off to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. Centenary, placed in arguably the most difficult region as the seventh seed in the eight team bracket drew Moravian in the opening game. The Cyclones provided the Union, N.J. Regional’s signature upset by defeating the Greyhounds 3-0. Keelan kept Moravian, who had won 20 of its last 22 games, off balance while her offense pushed across two runs in the third and another in the fifth to set up the upset. Unfortunately the Cyclones fell to Rowan University and Alvernia University in the next two games of the Regional to end their 2012 season with a final record of 27-16, a run the Cyclones will never forget.
Battle of the Best to Save the Breast Back on October 13, 2012 the two-time defending CSAC champion softball team took on the two-time defending MIWA champion wrestling team in a charity one-pitch softball game on Tannery Field to help raise awareness and support for the battle against breast cancer. Led behind the “Pin Cancer� campaign started behind former Centenary wrestling All-American Will Livingston, the Cyclones teamed up to battle breast cancer in a fun afternoon of charity in a battle to decide who was the best team on campus. Although no winner was ultimately decided, the event raise support and awareness for a good cause and the Cyclones were thrilled to go out and support the game. Centenary College Turf Fund “It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011. Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition. In November 1991, 10 charter member institutions with similar philosophies aligned to provide athletic competition for student-athletes from institutions with similar philosophies. The conference was formed to collectively recognize the importance of intercollegiate athletics in an educational setting and to increase institutional support without compromising academic integrity. These charter members voted unanimously to name the new conference the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), and on February 3, 1992, a press conference was held at Philadelphia’s Veteran’s Stadium to officially announce the formation of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), with competition to begin in the 1992-1993 academic year. The first Constitution was drafted in June 1992 and in April 1993, the conference was granted Affiliate Membership in the NCAA. In its inaugural year, the conference sponsored 12 championships; today, the CSAC sponsors 17 championships in 15 sports. The conference qualifies and maintains Automatic Qualifiers (AQs) in 13 sports, sending the conference champion to NCAA Championships in Field Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Men’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Softball and Men’s and Women’s Tennis.

Members of the CSAC wholly embrace the NCAA Division III “student first” philosophy by ensuring that institutions place the overall educational experience and successful completion of academic programs above all else. For this reason, student-athletes are treated no differently than any member of the student population. CSAC members embrace gender equity among student-athletes and are committed to providing athletics programs that are equitable for both genders.
The CSAC is also wholly dedicated to service in the community, as the league has participated in such initiatives as Habitat for Humanity and the Eastern Polar Plunge, sponsored by the PA Special Olympics. Each CSAC member school also participates in various service initiatives both campus-wide and in their communities.

The Cabrini men's lacrosse team has won 11 straight conference championships, and has appeared in 10 consecutive NCAA National Tournaments. Head coach Steve Colfer ranks second among active Division-III coaches, and third all-time, in career winning percentage (.789). 2011 Cairn University graduate Justin Brubaker stands alone as the only player NCAA Division-III men’s volleyball history to amass over 2,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs.
Cedar Crest’s Lizzy Sunderhaus was named the nation’s female recipient of the 2011 Jostens Trophy, which is regarded as the highest honor awarded in NCAA D-III basketball. The award is based on excellence on the court, in the classroom, and in the community. Former Centenary ace Cole Kimball appeared in 11 games for the Washington Nationals in 2011, posting an ERA of 1.93 in 14 innings pitched.
Gwynedd-Mercy’s Dan Dunkleberger is a four-time All-American in track. In 2009, he placed seventh in the 400m at the NCAA D-III National Championships. He returned in 2010 and was second in the same event, while he captured third in the 200m. In the 2010 Indoor Championships, he took sixth in the 400m.

In 2010-11, both the Immaculata women’s basketball and field hockey teams were recognized nationally for their team grade point averages. Women’s basketball was 11th nationally (3.508), while field hockey tied for 10th (3.44).
Baseball legend Christy Matthewson, an original member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, and 1959 Masters champion and PGA Player of the Year Art Wall each attended Keystone. Rose (Kuchawara) Jacklinski, a1999 Marywood graduate, is the all-time Division III record holder for consecutive stolen bases. Jacklinski swiped 68 consecutive stolen bases without being caught from April 23, 1996 to April 16, 1998.
Neumann’s men’s ice hockey team won the 2009 NCAA Division-III National Championship.
Notre Dame lacrosse player Kelsey Kempf was the NCAA Division-III statistical champion in Caused Turnovers in 2011, with 64 in 14 games, good for an average of 4.57 per game.
Since going co-educational in 2009, Rosemont has added six men’s programs and two women’s programs. Forty-four percent of Rosemont student-athletes have a cumulative Grade-Point Average higher than 3.0.

Centenary College: A Community Resource • Community Service Resources: This past academic year, Centenary students and staff volunteered more than 21,000 hours to local nonprofit organizations, including Trinity United Methodist Church, the Post House, Warren Haven Nursing Home and the NORWESCAP Food Bank. • Centenary Stage Company: The area’s only professional Equity Theatre, which offers the highest quality in professional music and dance.
