“It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011. Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition. SUPPORT SERVICES FITNESS CENTER
The Fitness Center, located in Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new, state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athletes’ seasonal fitness needs.
ATHLETIC TRAINING
The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physician Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A. Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Assistant Trainer Dana Baffuto and Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies. Damon received her B.S. in Health Science from Slippery Rock University and M.S. in Theory of Sports Medicine from Springfield College in Massachusetts. She was the Head Athletic Trainer at New Jersey City University before accepting the position at Centenary College in 2004. Damon was selected as an Athletic Trainer for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, working at the equestrian and mountain biking venues. Baffuto is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University where she received a Masters of Science degree in both Sports Management and Athletic Training. Davies earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Academics are Centenary’s number one priority and therefore we offer a number of support services to our student-athletes to make sure they are on the right path to a successful academic career. Each student-athlete is required to attend study hall in their first year at Centenary to aid them in their transition between high school and the demands of college academics. Professors are also encouraged to send progress reports on student-athletes to the athletic staff for academic monitoring. If a student-athlete is struggling in a class, Centenary offers tutors at no cost for any class. This is just another way that Centenary provides unparalleled service to its students.
COACHING STAFF Enrico Mastroianni completed his third season as Centenary’s head men’s basketball coach. In three years he has guided the team to 33 victories, including 24 conference wins, and two Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournaments. The Centenary men’s basketball team finished their 2010-2011 season at 9-15 overall and 7-11 in the CSAC. Late in the season, five-straight home wins by the Cyclones nearly landed them in the playoffs for the third straight season. However, needing one more win to earn a berth to the conference tournament, CC came up short at Marywood in the season finale. Senior guard Rob Urie received Second Team All-CSAC accolades and became Centenary’s all-time leading scorer since the program became an NCAA affiliated organization. Urie also received the Centenary athletic department’s Cardy Gemma Award, which honors a graduating student-athlete that demonstrates outstanding athletic ability, attitude and leadership on and off the playing field. Junior Larry Lenahan tied a program record with five-straight games where he tallied a double-double. Off the court, men’s basketball received seven CSAC All-Academic Team accolades and two NABC Honors Court members. The 2009-10 squad finished 11-15 overall and 9-9 in CSAC action, reaching the conference tournament as the sixth seed. Centenary achieved many individual and team milestones during the season. Ryan Kearney and Urie each passed the 1,000-point plateau and Centenary handed eventual CSAC-champion Cabrini its only conference loss, 81-80 at the Folkner Family Gymnasium. Kearney was named First Team All-CSAC, Third Team All-ECAC and Second Team All-Met. Mastroianni’s first year was very successful, as he led the young Cyclones to a 13-13 overall record and an 8-8 mark in the CSAC. The team picked up more victories in 2008-09 than it had the last five seasons combined, and received the program’s first conference tournament berth in five years. Two student-athletes received All-CSAC accolades, as Andrew Baker was named to the Second Team and Kearney earned Honorable Mention honors.
He has been instrumental in developing his players which has become evident in their 13 All-Conference awards, including three First Team honors, four Second Team accolades and three Honorable Mentions. He was named Centenary’s Coach of the Year in 2009 and has coached three 1,000-point scorers. Mastroianni currently resides in Budd Lake, N.J., with his wife Jamie and their daughters, Angelina and Elena. Milan Vujicic begins his first season as an assistant coach with the Centenary men’s basketball team. Vujicic joins the Cyclones after a spending one season as a head coach with NYC Phoenix Basketball in New York City, N.Y. Prior to that, he had two-year stint on the coaching staff at Feather River College in Quincy, Calif., where he was responsible for preparing technical and tactical drills as well as the strength and conditioning of the team. Feather River was Golden Valley co-champions each of his two years with the program. Born in Belgrade, Serbia, Vujicic was a shooting guard for various teams overseas for 15 years, including five seasons with a number of professional squads. He played for FMP, one of the Serbian-European top teams, and Platie Basketball in France. Vujicic received a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with a focus on Professional Basketball Coaching from the Coaching College of Belgrade in 2006. His mentor was one of the world’s best coaches, Dr. Milivoje Karalejic, and he also had the opportunity to learn under the tutelage of European coaching greats such as Vlade Djurovic, Sasa Jakovljevic, Vlada Vukoicic and Nenad Trunic. Vujicic has coaching experience with European teams FMP (Serbia) and Olympia Larissa (Greece). He is a member of both the Association of Basketball Coaches of Serbia and the World FIBA Coaching Association and he is currently pursuing his Master’s in Coaching Education at Ohio University.
Mastroianni came to Hackettstown after spending four seasons as the associate head coach at Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa. During his time with the Cougars, Mastroianni was also the head JV basketball coach, the Academic Coordinator for the Men’s Basketball team, top recruiter and major contributor to all strategic game-day and practice planning.
Corey Kearny begins his first season as a student assistant for the Cyclones after playing as a four-year varsity starter for Centenary, including his last three under coach Mastroianni. During his time as a Cyclone, Kearny recorded a total 930 points, 386 rebounds, 91 steals, and 13 blocks in 101 games played.
Mastroianni is a 1999 graduate of Penn State University where he completed his undergraduate degree in Marketing and International Business. In 2007 he completed his Master’s Degree in Education at Misericordia University.
Kearny is from North Arlington, N.J. and looks to complete his undergraduate studies to graduate this December with a degree in Sports Management.
season preview The Cyclones are coming off a disappointing end to the 2010-2011 season after missing the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament by one game. Despite having the opportunity to control their post-season destiny, the Cyclones finished the season with a 9-16 overall record, 7-11 in conference. The end of the 2010-2011 season became even more difficult to Head Coach Enrico Mastroianni and the Cyclones as they had to say goodbye to their highly decorated senior class that contributed so much to both the program and the team as a whole. One of those seniors, Rob Urie, became Centenary’s All-Time leading scorer since the program became an NCAA affiliate. Urie was also named second team All-Conference and was the recipient of the 2011 Cardy Gemma Award for the most outstanding male student-athlete at Centenary College. Along with Urie, last year’s team received seven CSAC All-Academic awards and two NABC Honors Court recipients. Pushing the past behind them, the 2011-2012 group has a brand new feel and the Cyclones plan to disprove any doubts about their potential success. This season, Coach Mastroianni has held a stronger emphasis on the preseason and believes it is going to make a major difference throughout the year: “I feel very confident knowing that our players have given a better preseason effort than ever before, and I believe that all our hard work will pay off.” The Cyclones look to turn to their veteran guards to lead the way. Seniors Ryan Donovan and Ludner Innocent are in their fourth season together in the Cyclone backcourt and they team up with juniors Max Hughes and Warren Murphy as the team’s four captains for the 2011-2012 season. Each of these guards has his own unique qualities. Donovan combines a tough defensive presence on the floor with great decision making and Innocent’s open court speed is unparalleled. Hughes will be counted on much more offensively this season and Murphy will have a more commanding role this season as a scoring point guard and vocal leader on the floor. The four guards share a variety of experience for the Cyclones, and Coach Mastroianni has a lot of faith that they will step up this season: “I’m very pleased that the team chose these four captains, and I am confident that they will lead us both on and off the court.” Also returning with the four captains at guard will be senior Danny Stein, who is returning from an injury in hopes to contribute during his final season, and Kyle Malavasi, who looks to carry over a strong preseason for the Cyclones.
As for forwards, Coach Mastroianni looks towards yet another veteran in senior Larry Lenahan as he looks to eclipse a stellar junior season in which he recorded five consecutive double-doubles for the Cyclones. “Larry finds a way to score points in the paint and he’ll be relied on to do that more for us this year.” Adding depth to the Cyclone frontcourt will also be three sophomores, Tim Brix, Andy Charles, and Gabe Cheavers who each hold a tremendous potential to step in and contribute with a variety of skills. Along with his returning veterans, Coach Mastroianni looks towards a strong pool of newcomers led by senior transfer Colin Horsch, who brings a variety of experience to the young Cyclone squad and is expected to make a major impact this season: “We’re excited that Colin chose Centenary and we’re expecting big things from him this season.” The Cyclones are also bringing in three freshmen this season including Kenneth Brown, a versatile 6’7” wing player who can become a dangerous force both inside and out. Brown is joined by fellow classmates Djovan Beausejour and Zhimir Butler who look to add depth to an already strong backcourt. Coach Mastroianni is very excited about this year’s recruiting class: “These three freshmen are very versatile players who we expect to fight for playing time throughout the year.” Joining the newcomers are Alex Bernhard and Kevin Peters, two sophomores who had great high school careers and have been on Coach Mastroianni’s radar for some time. They will look to provide depth on the perimeter for the Cyclones. The upcoming season looks to be a tough one for the Cyclones, but Coach Mastroianni is ready to face the challenge: “Our conference schedule is tough enough, but we’ve got some major challenges out of conference early in the year. These tests will hopefully prepare us to play a brutal conference schedule beginning in late November and carrying through the end of February.” Leading into the 2011-2012 season, the Cyclones were picked by the conference to finish in seventh place, but Coach Mastroianni and his team believes this is the year of the underdog: “I think we’re going to shock people this season. We’re accustomed to being the underdog at times, but this new version of the Cyclones has somewhat of a chip on its shoulder. We obviously expect to finish better than seventh place in the CSAC and we’re going to approach each game the same way – another chance for us to get a win.”
