“It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011. Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition. Centenary College is committed to a quality liberal arts and career studies education with a substantial international dimension to engage students in learning and prepare them for satisfying careers, successful lives, community service and lifelong intellectual pursuits. OUR ATHLETIC PHILOSOPHY Every coach’s mission is to provide the student-athlete with a competitive program and the opportunity to achieve excellence individually or as part of a team. The phrase “the teaching coach,” committed to the students, best describes our philosophy while maintaining a strong academic profile. As coaches we serve as both educators and leaders. Centenary’s goal is to maximize the human potential of our student-athletes. Our holistic approach stresses the fundamentals of the games we play as well as the values of responsibility, discipline and commitment. We know that these principles will translate into victories, but more importantly, they will develop young people with character. Those who compete and graduate become true champions, for they will understand what it means to be committed to excellence. ABOUT OUR ATHLETIC PROGRAM At Centenary College we nurture and encourage true competitive integrity. Our school adheres to a strict code of conduct from the recruiting process all the way to the NCAA Championships. Our coaches, administrators and staff members all take an active role in monitoring and insuring our compliance with all NCAA, Conference and College regulations. Centenary sponsors 13 men’s and women’s teams at the Division III level, and our Athletic Department continues to grow. We remain committed to developing our Athletic Department into one of the best small-college programs in the country. With the help of our dedicated coaches, staff and student-athletes we can see that dream come to reality. As a student-athlete, we will ask you to represent the College’s intercollegiate athletics program both on and off the field with integrity, professionalism and competitiveness. SUPPORT SERVICES FITNESS CENTER
The Fitness Center, located in Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new, state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athletes’ seasonal fitness needs.
ATHLETIC TRAINING
The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physician Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A. Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Assistant Trainer Dana Baffuto and Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies. Damon received her B.S. in Health Science from Slippery Rock University and M.S. in Theory of Sports Medicine from Springfield College in Massachusetts. She was the Head Athletic Trainer at New Jersey City University before accepting the position at Centenary College in 2004. Damon was selected as an Athletic Trainer for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, working at the equestrian and mountain biking venues. Baffuto is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University where she received a Masters of Science degree in both Sports Management and Athletic Training. Davies earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Academics are Centenary’s number one priority and therefore we offer a number of support services to our student-athletes to make sure they are on the right path to a successful academic career. Each student-athlete is required to attend study hall in their first year at Centenary to aid them in their transition between high school and the demands of college academics. Professors are also encouraged to send progress reports on student-athletes to the athletic staff for academic monitoring. If a student-athlete is struggling in a class, Centenary offers tutors at no cost for any class. This is just another way that Centenary provides unparalleled service to its students.
COACHING STAFF Justin Phoenix enters his first season as the head coach of the Centenary women’s basketball team. “I am truly honored to be selected as the new women’s basketball coach,” said Phoenix. “I am greatly appreciative to Director of Athletics Billie Blackwell and the entire search committee members for allowing me the opportunity to lead this program. It has been a long time dream to have my own program and from the moment I stepped on campus it felt like I belonged.” Phoenix comes to Centenary after spending three seasons at Kean University, where he was an assistant for the women’s basketball team. During his tenure at KU, the team went 75-15 with one New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship, three NCAA Tournament appearances and two Sweet Sixteen runs. The Cougars reached the Elite Eight in 2009-10 during a record-setting season that saw the team finish the year with 29 wins and just two losses. Phoenix played four seasons at Manhattan College from 1992-96. During his career at MC, he helped the team reach the postseason four times, including two NCAA Tournament and two NIT Tournament appearances. The Jaspers won the MAAC Championship in 1993. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Manhattan in 1996 and then spent several seasons playing abroad for various European club teams from 1996 to 2006. In 2007 he worked at Villanova head coach Jay Wright’s Summer Basketball Camp and decided to make the move to coaching. Phoenix joined the Burlington County College men’s basketball team as an assistant coach and spent one season there before making the move to Kean. Phoenix was responsible for working with the post players at both BCC and KU. With the Cougars, he helped develop three All-Americans, two NJAC Players of the Year, one NJAC Defensive Player of the Year and one player drafted to play in Puerto Rico. “Centenary is committed to excellence in academics, athletics and in the community and I am anxious to get to work and continue this tradition,” said Phoenix.
Chelsea Wolf enters her first season as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team, teaming up with the Cyclones new head coach, Justin Phoenix. Wolf joins the Centenary team after serving as the assistant women’s basketball coach at Middlesex County College in 2009-2010 and the Central Jersey Cardinals AAU 10U girls basketball coach the last two years. Wolf graduated from Ramapo College in 2009 with a B.A. in Contemporary Arts Concentrated in Digital Filmmaking and Design & Interactive Media. During her time as a student at Ramapo she served as a member of the varsity basketball team, cross country team, and spring track & field teams as well as a basketball office assistant for two years. As a student, Wolf was named a three-time Athletic Directors All-Academic Second Team honoree as well as a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, the Alpha Chapter of the National College Athlete Honor Society.
season preview
The women’s basketball season tip off against Husson University on Friday, Nov. 18th at the Hunter Tournament will signify a new start and new beginning for the Cyclones under new head coach Justin Phoenix. Phoenix looks at the 2011-12 season with that very motto of, “New Start. New Beginning!” as a fresh start for new and returning players alike.
Juniors Danielle Trucksess, Heather Russell, and Kellie Rose will be called upon to assume greater responsibility this season in the frontcourt. Trucksess averaged 4.9 points and 1.5 rebounds last season and looks to improve on those numbers this year. Senior center Chelsea Shaw averaged 2.1 points and 2.3 rebounds last season to round out the list of returning forwards for the Cyclones.
The Cyclones will try and improve on last season’s 13-12 finish (10-6 CSAC) in which Centenary earned the sixth seed in the CSAC Tournament before falling to Immaculata University 87-59 in the opening round. The 2010-11 squad led the conference in scoring, averaging 74.8 points per game behind seniors Jen Vasta and Hannah Ally.
At guard, the Cyclones have a talented group joining Vasta. Senior guard Jasmine Rosa is another veteran whom Phoenix will look to for leadership this season. Rosa started all 25 games last season for the Cyclones, averaging 5.9 points per game.
Phoenix takes over the helm of the Cyclones after serving as an assistant coach with Kean University for three seasons during which time the team went 75-15 with one New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship, three NCAA appearances, and two Sweet Sixteen appearances. The 2009-10 campaign saw the Cougars go 29-2 and reach the Elite Eight. The 2011-12 Cyclones will rely heavily on the 13 returning players from last season to lead the way. Jen Vasta, a two time All CSAC guard recorded her 1,000th career point last season on Jan. 10, en route to averaging 16.3 points per game, fifth best in the CSAC. Vasta was among the conference leaders in most statistics, including leading the CSAC in field goal percentage at .570. The senior also led the conference in assist/turnover ratio at 1.8 and was tied in steals per game at 3.3. When Vasta was not scoring, she was dishing out assists, finishing second in the CSAC with 98, an average of 3.9 per game. Since 2008, Vasta has become Centenary’s leader in several all-time statistics. Vasta currently resides at the top of the list in all-time field goals made (504), field goal percentage (.541), steals (276), and assists (312). In addition, Vasta holds the three best Cyclones single-season totals in assists and the top two single-season totals in steals. Coach Phoenix will call upon Vasta to be the leader this season as the Cyclones look to compete for the CSAC title. Returning with Vasta is forward Hannah Ally, another senior who averaged in double-digit points last season (11.9) and led the team in scoring six times. Ally, also a factor on the boards, brought down 116 rebounds last year and is currently third all-time in free throw attempts and fifth all-time in free throws made. Her propensity to get to the stripe will be counted on in 2011-12 for the Cyclones. Joining Ally at forward is senior Bridget McCann whom Coach Phoenix says will be relied on more this year to be a dominating force in the paint. As the tallest member of the Cyclones, McCann’s ability to control the paint on both ends of the floor will determine much of Centenary’s success.
Senior Colleen Collins averaged 3.5 points last season and was a threat from beyond the three-point line. Collins shot 17-41 from beyond the line, a .415 percentage. Along with Collins will be sophomore Melissa Kukoda whom Phoenix expects increased production from in 2011-12. The two averaged 5.4 and 1.7 points respectively. In addition to the 13 returners, the Cyclones will expect the two newcomers to provide an immediate impact. Junior transfer Kristen Cenicacelaya joins the Centenary team after two seasons with Sussex County Community College. Cenicacelaya is the all-time scorer for the Skylanders and should add depth and strength in the paint for the Cyclones. Freshman Andrea Innis comes to Centenary after a standout career for Secaucus High School where Innis is the all-time leader in points in a single-season (579). Innis earned First Team All-State Group I honors in both her junior and senior seasons and looks to be a key player in the Cyclones’roatation. Centenary opens their season at the Hunter Tournament on Nov. 18-19 before returning home to the Folkner Family Gymnasium for contests versus PSU-Wilkes Barre on Nov.22 and Albright on Nov. 26. The Cyclones begin their CSAC schedule on Nov. 30 when the women travel to LaPlume, Pa. to take on the Keystone Giants. Coach Phoenix believes that the CSAC will be a highly competitive league this season and every team has the chance to be crowned champions. The 2011-12 season may be a new start and a new beginning for the Cyclones and Head Coach Justin Phoenix, yet it is the experience of the many veteran players that will help Centenary throughout the season. “I believe this senior laden Cyclone team will make every effort possible for a chance at that conference championship and to make the post season,” states Phoenix. “I look forward to improving the mindset, confidence and skills of each and every player this season and for season’s to come.”
