“It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011. Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition. OUR MISSION STATEMENT Centenary College is a community of learners distinguished by a diverse student body, a dedicated faculty and staff and stimulating educational opportunities. Centenary College is committed to a quality liberal arts and career studies education with a substantial international dimension to engage students in learning and prepare them for satisfying careers, successful lives, community service and lifelong intellectual pursuits. OUR ATHLETIC PHILOSOPHY Every coach’s mission is to provide the student-athlete with a competitive program and the opportunity to achieve excellence individually or as part of a team. The phrase “the teaching coach,” committed to the students, best describes our philosophy while maintaining a strong academic profile. As coaches we serve as both educators and leaders. Centenary’s goal is to maximize the human potential of our student-athletes. Our holistic approach stresses the fundamentals of the games we play as well as the values of responsibility, discipline and commitment. We know that these principles will translate into victories, but more importantly, they will develop young people with character. Those who compete and graduate become true champions, for they will understand what it means to be committed to excellence. ABOUT OUR ATHLETIC PROGRAM At Centenary College we nurture and encourage true competitive integrity. Our school adheres to a strict code of conduct from the recruiting process all the way to the NCAA Championships. Our coaches, administrators and staff members all take an active role in monitoring and insuring our compliance with all NCAA, Conference and College regulations. Centenary sponsors 13 men’s and women’s teams at the Division III level, and our Athletic Department continues to grow. We remain committed to developing our Athletic Department into one of the best small-college programs in the country. With the help of our dedicated coaches, staff and student-athletes we can see that dream come to reality. As a student-athlete, we will ask you to represent the College’s intercollegiate athletics program both on and off the field with integrity, professionalism and competitiveness. During your years at Centenary you will be asked to make sacrifices, but these sacrifices will be well rewarded by relationships and memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

SUPPORT SERVICES FITNESS CENTER

The fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new, state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athletes’ seasonal fitness needs.

ATHLETIC TRAINING

The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physician Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A. Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Assistant Trainer Dana Baffuto and Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies. Damon received her B.S. in Health Science from Slippery Rock University and M.S. in Theory of Sports Medicine from Springfield College in Massachusetts. She was the Head Athletic Trainer at New Jersey City University before accepting the position at Centenary College in 2004. Damon was selected as an Athletic Trainer for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, working at the equestrian and mountain biking venues. Baffuto is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University where she received a Masters of Science degree in both Sports Management and Athletic Training. Davies earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT

Academics are Centenary’s number one priority and therefore we offer a number of support services to our student-athletes to make sure they are on the right path to a successful academic career. Each student-athlete is required to attend study hall in their first year at Centenary to aid them in their transition between high school and the demands of college academics. Professors are also encouraged to send progress reports on student-athletes to the athletic staff for academic monitoring. If a student-athlete is struggling in a class, Centenary offers tutors at no cost for any class. This is just another way that Centenary provides unparalleled service to its students.

COACHING STAFF Josh Huber wrapped up his 13th season with the Centenary College golf program. During his tenure with the team, the Cyclones have competed as an independent school and within the Skyline and PAC Conferences. The team is entering its fourth season as a member of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). In 2011, Huber led the squad to one of the best seasons in program history with a fifth-place finish in the CSAC Tournament after two-straight seasons of finishing sixth. Junior John Manos tied for third overall in the event to take home First Team All-CSAC honors, the first All-Conference award of his career and the first for a Cyclone since current assistant coach Brian Flexer received All-Skyline honors in 2005. Manos shot a 79 on the first day and a career-best 76 on the second. Sophomore Brian Criscuolo carded a career and team-season-high 74 on the first day of the Championship, eventually tying for 14th-place. The team placed 11th out of 19 teams in the Moravian Invitational and followed that with a sixth-place finish out of 17 teams in the Lebanon Valley Invitational that saw senior Sean Kelley tie for sixth overall out of 86 golfers. CC then placed seventh out of 14 teams in the Susquehanna Invitational thanks to Manos, who tied for fourth overall with a 77. Off the course, four golfers earned CSAC All-Academic Team honors. The 2010 campaign saw the team twice set program-records in scoring, first with a 328 in the Centenary Quad Tournament on April 9 and then with a 313 in a win over Purchase on April 20. Against PC, Kelley and freshman Brian Criscuolo each shot a 76, a personal-best score for each. The Cyclones finished sixth in the CSAC Tournament for the second consecutive season. During his tenure, Huber has had one player qualify for the ECAC Golf Championships as an individual (Fall, 2004) and another finish as the runner-up in the Skyline Conference (Fall, 2005). Huber took over the Centenary program in 1998, when he was hired as the school’s Sports Information Director. Prior to coming to Centenary, he was a three-year letterwinner for the Allentown College golf team and graduated from there in 1998 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Sports Management. This past year he took on the mantle of Associate Athletic Director at Centenary. He currently resides in Bethlehem, Pa., with his wife Stef and their sons Jacob and Landon.

James Fox enters his first season as assistant coach of the Centenary golf team. Fox arrives in Hackettstown with a broad background in both playing and teaching golf. A graduate of Pope John XXIII Regional High School in Sparta, Fox went on to study at the University of South Carolina and continued on to the International Junior Golf Academy of Hilton Head Island to advance his game and experience. Fox will assist head coach Josh Huber in all aspects with the Cyclones. Fox is a proven instructor, working as a certified personal coach with GolfTEC in Woodland Park, N.J. Fox has served as an assistant golf professional and director of outside operations with Alpine Country Club, host of the 2008 N.J. State Open. Fox earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Carolina in 2006. Fox resides in Newton, N.J. Brian Flexer enters his sixth season on the Centenary coaching staff. Flexer joined the staff five years ago, one year removed from the competition side. As a player, he was Centenary’s top competitor in both his junior and senior seasons. Following his graduation in December of 2007, Flexer chose to continue working with the Cyclone program. During his two-plus seasons as player for Centenary, Flexer led the team in scoring average in both the fall and spring seasons. At the 2005 Skyline Conference Championships he finished second overall at the two-day event, shooting 77 in consecutive days en route to his 154 two-day total. Sean Kelley joins the Centenary coaching staff after competing for four seasons on the Cyclones golf team. In his senior season, he finished with a team second-best 82.5 stroke average and was named to the CSAC All-Academic Team. Throughout his career, Kelley also received CSAC Weekly Honor Roll and Team MVP honors as a golfer. He graduated from Centenary college in 2011 and now looks to gain experience as an assistant coach under his former coach Josh Huber.

season preview The Cyclones are coming off a strong fall season as they took home their first ever tournament win at the St. Joseph’s Fall Invitational on Sept. 16, 2011. Centenary was led by junior Brian Criscuolo who finished the tournament in third place with a 78, six strokes over par. Criscuolo was joined by standout freshman Tim Erath who finished right behind him in fourth place with a round of 79. The Cyclones were able to finish with a team-best 325, enough to put them ahead of Farmingdale State by three strokes to earn the tournament victory. Criscuolo led the Cyclones throughout the entire fall, leading the team with an average 77.6 strokes across his five competitions. Right behind him was senior John Manos who ended the fall season with an 82.2 stroke average.

Also among the top for the Cyclones has been sophomore Kevin Peters who concluded with an 83.8 stroke average, his best coming in the Cyclone Invitational on Oct. 18 as he finished with a team second-best 80 in the Cyclones fourth place finish. Looking to build on his fall season is junior Bill McNeir who shot his career best 77 strokes on day two of the Immaculata Invitational back on Oct. 24 to give him an 86.1 stroke average on the fall. The Cyclones are also expecting a big contribution from sophomore transfer Robert Linepensel from Warren County Community College who has experience playing in numerous amateur tournaments including a victory on the Lehigh Valley Junior tour. The spring roster rounds out with senior Justin Belanger, junior Mike Doyle, sophomore James Salinardi, and freshmen C.J. Lawson and Michael Scholer, all of whom will see competitive action this semester for the Cyclones.
