Centenary College Athletics Our Athletic Philosophy
Every coach’s mission is to provide the student-athlete with a competitive program and the opportunity to achieve excellence individually or as part of a team. The phrase “the teaching coach,” committed to the students, best describes our philosophy while maintaining a strong academic profile. As coaches, we serve as both educators and leaders. Centenary’s goal is to maximize the human potential of our student-athletes. Our holistic approach stresses the fundamentals of the games we play as well as the values of responsibility, discipline, and commitment. We know that these principles will translate into victories, but more importantly, they will develop young people with character. Those who compete and graduate become true champions, for they will understand what it means to be committed to excellence.

We remain committed to developing our Athletic Department into one of the best small-college programs in the country. With the help of our dedicated coaches, staff and student-athletes we can see that dream come to reality. As a student-athlete, we will ask you to represent the College’s intercollegiate athletics program both on and off the field with integrity, professionalism and competitiveness. Athletic Training and Conditioning The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physicial Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Dana Baffuto. The fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athlete’s seasonal fitness needs.

Head coach Kevin Davies just wrapped up his 13th season at the helm of Centenary’s women’s
soccer program. Under his guidance, the team has become a force in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) and the region. Davies has guided the team to five-straight conference semifinal appearances, including two championship games. In the past five seasons, the team has gone 51-32-10 with a 39-9-5 conference mark. In 2011, the Centenary women found themselves in a familiar situation - the CSAC Tournament Semifinals in a penalty kick shootout after regulation and two overtime periods could not provide a winner. The Cyclones fell this time to Neumann University, yet the season was filled with accomplishments. Centenary posted a record of 11-5-3, 9-2-2 in CSAC play and advanced once again to the CSAC Tournament. The third seeded Cyclones defeated Baptist Bible College 6-0 in the first round game to advance to the semifinals vs. Neumann. Along the way, Coach Davies’ team ran off an eight game unbeaten streak (Sept. 21-Oct. 15) which included a five game shutout streak. Several Cyclones earned post season accolades in 2011, including Brittany Overland who was named the CSAC Player of the year to go with her First Team All-Conference placement. Along with Overland on the All-CSAC First Team were Tatiana Kingston and Kristyn Lehmann. Earning Second Team All-CSAC honors were Caitlin Veverka and Sara Smith. Alyssa Hackelberg received All-Conference Honorable Mention and Arille Hamilton was placed on the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team. The Cyclones’ 2010 campaign began with Davies winning his 100th career game as head coach of Centenary, thanks to a 9-0 defeat of Old Westbury. After a loss to Cabrini that left the team 6-7, CC closed the regular season on a six-game winning streak, including a 1-0 double-overtime win over Montclair State, the program’s first-ever victory against the Red Hawks.
Centenary tied the program-record in conference victories, going 8-2 to earn the third-seed in the CSAC. After defeating Neumann in double-OT, 2-1, CC tied second-seeded Marywood 2-2 and advanced to the championship game thanks to a 7-6 advantage in penalty kicks. The Lady Cyclones became the first Centenary program to host a conference championship, where it took on fifth-seed Immaculata. After tying the Mighty Macs 1-1, CC earned the CSAC Championship and its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth with a 4-3 edge. In the NCAAs, CC battled No. 16 Dickinson to a 1-1 tie and again went to penalty kicks, where this time the Cyclones fell, 4-2, ending their season. Jazmine Farrell received First Team All-CSAC and Second Team NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Regional and five other Cyclones earned All-Conference awards, including Tatiana Kingston, who took home Second Team honors after setting a program record with 14 assists. After winning nine games in 2008, the Lady Cyclones improved to 14 wins in 2009, with five losses and one tie. The team matched their 2008 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) mark of 7-2-1 to place third in the conference. Centenary advanced to the semifinals where it fell at Cabrini. Because of their successful regular season, the Lady Cyclones earned a berth to the ECAC South Tournament as the sixth-seed, falling at third-seeded Swarthmore, 3-0. Davies coached nine student-athletes to CSAC postseason awards, including First Team honors for juniors Kelley Michanczyk, Bianca Santulli and Farrell. In 2008, Centenary finished 9-9-2, including a 7-2-1 conference mark. The Lady Cyclones defeated Immaculata 1-0 in the opening round of the CSAC Tournament, before falling to Gwynedd-Mercy, 1-0, in the semifinals. Five student-athletes received All-Conference honors, and Santulli was named to the NSCAA/adidas Third Team All-Mid-Atlantic-Region. Davies guided Centenary to a 14-6-2 mark in 2007, including an 8-1-1 record in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC). The Lady Cyclones earned a berth into the conference tournament, reaching the championship game before falling to Eastern, 1-0. Davies’ squad then was chosen as the second seed in the ECAC Metro Region Tournament. Centenary shut out the College of Staten Island (5-0) and Rutgers-Camden (2-0) to reach the championship game, where it fell to Stevens, 5-1.
Six student-athletes were named to the PAC All-Conference teams, including First Team honors for Tanya DiDonna, who also earned NSCAA All-Mid Atlantic Region Third Team honors and was selected as Centenary College’s Woman of the Year by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. Over his 13 seasons at Centenary (1999-present), Davies has amassed a career record of 123-105-15. In four seasons in the CSAC, his team has a mark of 31-8-4. The Cyclones have made eight postseason appearances during his time with the program. Since coming to Centenary, he has taken the women’s soccer program to the next level, continually filling the schedule with high quality opponents. The Cyclones have developed an exciting style of soccer, one that makes it enjoyable for fans to watch and very competitive for team members to play. A native of Neath, South Wales, Davies began playing at the semi-professional level at the age of 16 for Briton Ferry Athletic in the Welsh National League. He then moved to the U.S. in 1994 to attend East Stroudsburg University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training. While at ESU he played his freshman year for the very successful men’s program at the tender age of 34 before becoming the assistant women’s coach. Davies has also coached with the New Jersey ODP (Olympic Development Program) He currently holds a USSF ’A’ coaching license, while supporting numerous youth soccer clubs around the Hackettstown area. Besides his coaching duties at Centenary, he is one of the college’s Athletic Trainers. He resides in Hackettstown with his wife Stacy and their two children, Raegan and Shayne.
Richelle Morse finished her second season as an assistant coach for the Centenary women’s
soccer team. Morse joined the Cyclones after serving as an assistant soccer coach with the Holy Family Academic girl’s soccer team, a position she held since 2008. Morse was the starting goalkeeper for Caldwell College for four years before her graduation in 2007. She currently holds the school record for career shutouts. Her best year was in 2004, when she won 11 games, stopped 149 shots and recorded nine shutouts. She has used her experience to serve as the goalkeepers coach at HFA and a goalkeeper trainer for Soccer Xperience, a soccer training organization based in Old Bridge, N.J. Morse holds her National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) State Diploma and Advanced Regional Diploma, as well as her NSCAA State Goalkeeper Diploma and her Regional Goalkeeper Diploma. She recently received the USSF National D License.
Becca Townsend concluded her second season as an assistant women’s soccer coach at
Centenary College in 2011.
Townsend joined the Cyclones after finishing a stellar four-year playing career at Saint Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. At St. Lawrence, Townsend earned Liberty League Second Team honors twice (2008 & 2009) and All-Academic honors in each of her four years (2006-2009). She also served as Team Captain for St. Lawrence and for the Super Y Soccer U-20 team. Townsend graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Psychology and a minor in Educational Studies. She finished with a 3.56 GPA and made Dean’s List during her Junior and Senior years. In addition to her playing experience, Townsend also worked as Sports Coordinator and Head Counselor at the YMCA Camp Carr in Flemington during her summers from 2005-2008.
Season Preview The past two seasons concluded with similar, yet different endings. Both seasons came down to a shootout in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament, with the 2010 team prevailing as CSAC Champions. A year ago however, the Cyclones outplayed Neumann University through regulation of the CSAC Semi-finals but fell to the Knights in the very shootout that crowned Centenary as champs a season earlier. This year, Head Coach Kevin Davies and the Cyclones look to leave nothing to chance, as a group of eight newcomers joins the battle tested veterans seeking to win a second CSAC Championship. The Cyclones will look to build on last season’s 11-5-3 record, where they remained as one of the CSAC leaders all season en route to posting an 8-2-1 conference mark. Coach Davies returns a bulk of the 2011 roster yet knows the Cyclones do have some big shoes to fill. Centenary will move forward without several key performers, including NCAA DIII Third Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region and 2011 CSAC Player of the Year Brittany Overland and Team MVP Caitlin Veverka, along with Arielle Hamilton, Mary Anderson, Kristyn Lehman and Courtney Flanagan. Overland scored 13 goals, assisting on five more for Centenary, while Hamilton, Flanagan and Veverka accounted for a combined 18 goals and seven assists. “When you lose the Player of the Year for the conference (Overland) and probably the most decorated player in Centenary history (Veverka), it is tough. The loss of players the quality of Overland, Veverka, Hamilton, Lehman, and Anderson leave a void, but we have freshmen who have stepped up to the plate during our non-traditional season who look to fill their boots.” Coach Davies, once again assisted by coaches Richelle Morse and Rebecca Townsend, is extremely pleased with this year’s freshmen class and the work they have put in, while also expressing the efforts of last season’s stellar crop of freshmen, now with a year under their belts.
Season Preview “You can’t buy experience and this was the best non-traditional season I can remember. Everybody showed so much more confidence. I look forward to seeing how that will play out this season.” The Cyclones return all three goalkeepers from last season including senior Alyssa Hackelberg and sophomores Nikki Gillis and Megan Williams. Coach Davies believes he has three of the best keepers in the conference and says the competition in goal is good, stating: “Having three good goalkeepers is a dilemma I believe most coaches would like to have.” On defense for Centenary will be a mix of returners and newcomers with sophomore Nikki Crowley, whom Davies believes is one of the top defenders in the CSAC leading the way. Also returning with Crowley is sophomore Allie Molinaro who saw considerable action in 2011. Kristen Brown, a junior transfer and freshmen Zanetta Cheng, and Jaclyn LaGuardia will also work to provide a stifling defense for Centenary. At midfield the Cyclones return senior Captain Tatiana Kingston whom Davies says gives a hundred percent in every practice and every game and possesses tremendous vision. Kingston’s vision leaves her just two assists shy of setting a new school record in assists as she enters the season with 18. Joining Kingston in the center-midfield will be sophomore Cara Holmes and junior Kelley Carvalho. Others returning at midfield for Centenary will be senior Captain Sara Smith who recorded four goals a year ago, junior Amira Guerrero, sophomore Becky Camp, senior transfer Courtney Dillon, freshmen Natalina Focarelli, Theresa Santalla Becky D’Angelo and Lorraine Dedrick. Leading the Cyclones up front will be sophomores Laura Potter who scored five goals while assisting on four more and Samantha Sysak who found the back of the net five times last season. Davies is pleased with the versatility of the Cyclones explaining that Dillon and Camp among others can also play as forwards.
Season Preview Coach Davies has named seniors, Tatiana Kingston, Sara Smith, and Chrissy Bressman as captains for the 2012 season. They are three players who have grown with the program and have shown they belong to be in that role,” says Davies. “They show excellent qualities in the classroom and on the field. I think we have very good leaders as captains.” The Cyclones will play a difficult schedule that kicks off Friday, August 31st against Albion College in the Cyclone Kickoff Classic before facing Drew University on Saturday, September 1st. In conference, Coach Davies expects the CSAC to be extremely competitive this year as the usual contenders, Marywood, Cabrini, Neumann, and Immaculata expect to be in the hunt for the title once again, while the rest of the conference continues to improve. As always, Centenary will look to win the conference and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Ouside of CSAC play, the Cyclones will square off against tough opponents from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), Montclair State and William Paterson. The Cyclones will embark on the 2012 season with a young team, with 14 players in either their freshman or sophomore year. Coach Davies believes the success of his team will come from the hard work each member of the team has put in over the off-season and in practice so far. He also points to the versatility of the Cyclones as a positive aspect saying: “We’ll be solid. We have a lot of opportunity to change formations and move people around. If we can get healthy, we will have a good season.”
Season Preview Centenary will host the Cyclone Kickoff Classic on Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1, holding the tournament in honor of Brittany Emerald Paes. Paes, a native of the same hometown as Centenary’s Laura Potter, passed away in a tragic ATV accident in June. All proceeds raised from the Cyclone Kickoff Classic will be donated to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an organization Paes belong to. The Cyclone Kickoff Classic kicks off at 2 pm on August 31st with Drew University taking on St. John Fisher. The Cyclones will launch the 2012 season at 4 pm vs. Albion College from Michigan.

2010 Championship Team
The 2010 women’s soccer team brought Centenary College a year of firsts as they set the
best season in the program’s history with a 14-6-3 record, brought Head Coach Kevin Davies his 100th career win, took home the 2010 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship title, and made their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Despite entering the CSAC Tournament with a six game winning streak, the tournament would be no easy task for the Cyclones. The 2010 squad would face six seeded Neumann University in the first round of the tournament where they would compete in a double overtime thriller before Caitlin Veverka sent home the game winner to send the Cyclones to the final four. The semi-finals for the Cyclones proved to be yet another challenge for Centenary as took to the road to take on second seeded Marywood University. Once again, the Cyclones found themselves in a familiar position as they competed in double overtime with the pacers. This time however, the Cyclones could not end it in timed play, forcing a penalty kick decision. After a back-and-forth of successful penalty kicks, Cyclones goalie stopped the Pacers third-round sudden death attempt to allow Jen Dexter to send the ball to the back of the net and give the Cyclones the opportunity to host the 2010 Championship Game against Immaculata University. As the higher seed, the Cyclones were selected as the host team for the Championship, another program-first, and would host would could arguably be called one of the most thrilling CSAC Championships to date. The Cyclones and the Mighty Macs would remained tied 1-1 after yet another Centenary double-overtime, sending the game to a championship deciding round of penalty kicks. Through the first four rounds of penalty kicks, each team landed three successful kicks to send it into a sudden-death final round. With the Cyclones set to start the fifth round, Coach Davies turned to junior Courtney Flanagan who blasted the ball towards the goal, deflecting off Immaculata goalie Jessica Gaburo’s hand and into the back of the net.
2010 Championship Team With only one save between Centenary and the 2010 CSAC Championship, the Cyclones posted their top goalie, Ashley Denti between the posts to take on the deciding shot from Immaculata’s Erin Lewis. As the entire crowd held their breath, Lewis would rip a shot towards the Cyclone goal but Denti came up huge for Centenary, stopping the ball and leading the Cyclones to their first ever CSAC Championship. As the 2010 CSAC Champions, the Cyclones earned themselves an automatic bid into the 2010 NCAA Tournament as they were slated to take on No. 16 Dickenson in the first round. Once again, the Cyclones had to make things interesting as they remained tied 1-1 with the Red Devils to force their fourth consecutive double-overtime and eventually their third consecutive penalty kick shootout. Unfortunately this time would mark the end of the incredible run for the Cyclones as they were outscored 4-2 in the shootout by the Red Devils. The 2010 season would be one that would be remembered by all for the Cyclones, especially Head Coach Kevin Davies who had this to say after the CSAC Championship Game: “This has been a long time coming, 12 years. These ladies played hard today and I love them to bits. This season has been a long road, but we’ve played very well recently. Anything we do moving forward is just icing on the cake.”
Costa Rica Trip Just prior to the preseason of 2010, the Centenary College women’s soccer team took to the south as they traveled to Costa Rica to take on some of the most fierce competition the country had to offer. For over a week, the Cyclones would spend their time practicing, competing, and taking in the cultural differences the Costa Rican soccer world had to show them. The Cyclones would open their trip with what could be considered one of the most difficult teams they have ever competed against, taking on the Costa Rican National Championship Team. Unfortunately the Cyclones could not hold on against the national champions, falling 5-1 in a hard fought game. “We played a very good team and got beat, but it was a good test for us,” said head coach Kevin Davies. “Especially considering that this group has only been together for one day.” Game two for the Cyclones would be yet another high quality Costa Rican team, but the Cyclones came together and brought home a 3-3 tie. Aside from the two games, the girls also took to the community as they helped out at a Costa Rican orphanage throughout their trip. The Cyclones got to experience everything from visits to the rainforest, Arenal Volcano, and Hot Springs to a white water rafting trip along the way, better bringing their team together and enhancing their cultural knowledge. The trip clearly helped the 2010 squad as they came together later that season for their first ever CSAC Championship, the program’s best record, and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Centenary College Turf Fund “It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011. Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition. About the CSAC
The Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) – formerly known as the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) – was formed to meet the needs of small, private, four-year colleges in eastern Pennsylvania. As the institutions’ athletic programs continued to grow, it became increasingly necessary to address individual and collective concerns about intercollegiate athletics.
In November 1991, 10 charter member institutions with similar philosophies aligned to provide athletic competition for student-athletes from institutions with similar philosophies. The conference was formed to collectively recognize the importance of intercollegiate athletics in an educational setting and to increase institutional support without compromising academic integrity. These charter members voted unanimously to name the new conference the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), and on February 3, 1992, a press conference was held at Philadelphia’s Veteran’s Stadium to officially announce the formation of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), with competition to begin in the 1992-1993 academic year. The first Constitution was drafted in June 1992 and in April 1993, the conference was granted Affiliate Membership in the NCAA. In its inaugural year, the conference sponsored 12 championships; today, the CSAC sponsors 17 championships in 15 sports. The conference qualifies and maintains Automatic Qualifiers (AQs) in 13 sports, sending the conference champion to NCAA Championships in Field Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Men’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Softball and Men’s and Women’s Tennis.

Members of the CSAC wholly embrace the NCAA Division III “student first” philosophy by ensuring that institutions place the overall educational experience and successful completion of academic programs above all else. For this reason, student-athletes are treated no differently than any member of the student population. CSAC members embrace gender equity among student-athletes and are committed to providing athletics programs that are equitable for both genders.
The CSAC is also wholly dedicated to service in the community, as the league has participated in such initiatives as Habitat for Humanity and the Eastern Polar Plunge, sponsored by the PA Special Olympics. Each CSAC member school also participates in various service initiatives both campus-wide and in their communities.
