“It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011. Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition. Centenary College is committed to a quality liberal arts and career studies education with a substantial international dimension to engage students in learning and prepare them for satisfying careers, successful lives, community service and lifelong intellectual pursuits. OUR ATHLETIC PHILOSOPHY Every coach’s mission is to provide the student-athlete with a competitive program and the opportunity to achieve excellence individually or as part of a team. The phrase “the teaching coach,” committed to the students, best describes our philosophy while maintaining a strong academic profile. As coaches we serve as both educators and leaders. Centenary’s goal is to maximize the human potential of our student-athletes. Our holistic approach stresses the fundamentals of the games we play as well as the values of responsibility, discipline and commitment. We know that these principles will translate into victories, but more importantly, they will develop young people with character. Those who compete and graduate become true champions, for they will understand what it means to be committed to excellence. ABOUT OUR ATHLETIC PROGRAM At Centenary College we nurture and encourage true competitive integrity. Our school adheres to a strict code of conduct from the recruiting process all the way to the NCAA Championships. Our coaches, administrators and staff members all take an active role in monitoring and insuring our compliance with all NCAA, Conference and College regulations. Centenary sponsors 13 men’s and women’s teams at the Division III level, and our Athletic Department continues to grow. We remain committed to developing our Athletic Department into one of the best small-college programs in the country. With the help of our dedicated coaches, staff and student-athletes we can see that dream come to reality. As a student-athlete, we will ask you to represent the College’s intercollegiate athletics program both on and off the field with integrity, professionalism and competitiveness. SUPPORT SERVICES FITNESS CENTER
The fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new, state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athletes’ seasonal fitness needs.
ATHLETIC TRAINING
The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physician Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A. Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Assistant Trainer Dana Baffuto and Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies. Damon received her B.S. in Health Science from Slippery Rock University and M.S. in Theory of Sports Medicine from Springfield College in Massachusetts. She was the Head Athletic Trainer at New Jersey City University before accepting the position at Centenary College in 2004. Damon was selected as an Athletic Trainer for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, working at the equestrian and mountain biking venues. Baffuto is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University where she received a Masters of Science degree in both Sports Management and Athletic Training. Davies earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Academics are Centenary’s number one priority and therefore we offer a number of support services to our student-athletes to make sure they are on the right path to a successful academic career. Each student-athlete is required to attend study hall in their first year at Centenary to aid them in their transition between high school and the demands of college academics. Professors are also encouraged to send progress reports on student-athletes to the athletic staff for academic monitoring. If a student-athlete is struggling in a class, Centenary offers tutors at no cost for any class. This is just another way that Centenary provides unparalleled service to its students.
HEAD COACH Matt Klank is entering his eighth season as head coach of the Centenary men’s lacrosse program. Last season, the team went 6-7 overall and 1-5 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC). Despite numerous injuries to key players, the Cyclones went toe-to-toe with each of their CSAC opponents, as four of their conference losses were by seven goals or fewer. Juniors Conor Nolan and Robert Nuzzolese were each named Second Team All-CSAC Midfield and Attack, respectively. Senior goalie Kyle McVay and junior defender Sean Lowe received Honorable Mention accolades. McVay had a career season, posting career-highs in minutes (583:30), saves (141), save percentage (.627) and goals against average (8.64). He set Centenary single-season records in GAA and save percentage and ranked 13th in save percentage, 27th in saves per game and 66th in goals against average in the final national statistics. He led CSAC in saves per game and ranked third in save percentage and ninth in goals against average. Former senior, Joe Swantkoski finished his career with the fourth-highest goals total in program history after leading the squad in scores (36) and points (38), both career-highs. The 2010 squad finished 6-8, including 1-5 in the CSAC. Three of the Cyclones’ five conference losses were by two goals or fewer. Centenary fielded only two seniors, co-captains Jason Rieg and Eddie Montalvo, but the young players came through as Nolan (30 goals, team-high 40 assists, team-high 70 points), Nuzzolese (25 goals, seven assists) and Lowe (62 groundballs, team-high 30 caused turnovers) all played above their years.
Rieg and Nolan earned First Team All-CSAC status, while Montalvo took home Second Team honors and Lowe received Honorable Mention accolades. As a team, Centenary was given the CSAC Sportsmanship Award. Rieg also received United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) 2010 Scholar All-American honors, one of just 70 Division I, II and III student-athletes to earn the award. The 2009 campaign was one of Klank’s best coaching jobs, as he guided an injury-plagued team, with only 16 student-athletes on the roster, to a 6-9 record, including a 4-2 mark in the CSAC. The Cyclones finished the season as the third seed in the conference tournament, falling at Marywood in the first round. In 2008 the Cyclones finished the year as the third seed in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) with a 5-3 mark, including three straight victories to close out the season, before falling in the conference semi-finals. Klank came to Centenary in 2005, following four seasons at Drew University as its assistant coach and offensive coordinator. Prior to joining Drew’s staff, Klank was an assistant at Villanova University (1998-2000) as well as at Montclair State University following his graduation in 1997. Klank has also had some experience at the high school level, as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Montclair Kimberly Academy from 1995-97. Klank began his collegiate playing career at Drexel University in 1992. His freshman season he was the program’s top scorer. After another year with the Dragons, he transferred to Montclair State for his final two years of eligibility. He received such honors as the ECAC Most Valuable Player and All-New Jersey First-Team in 1994. Klank also led the Red Hawks in scoring in his two years at MSU. A graduate of Montclair State in 1997, Klank earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Commercial Recreation and Tourism. He currently lives in North Caldwell, N.J. with his wife Marisel and their daughter Ashley Elizabeth.
ASSISTANT COACHES William “Bo” Ingalsbe enters his second season as Offensive Coordinator for the Centenary College men’s lacrosse team. As a player, Ingalsbe played three seasons on a club team at Old Dominion University in Virginia Beach, Va. He was a team captain all three years and led the team in points and assists during his tenure. He transferred to Centenary for his senior season and started in goal for the Cyclones, compiling a program-best 11-4 record. After graduating from Centenary with a B.A. in Communication in 2004, Ingalsbe coached youth and high school lacrosse in the Washington, D.C., area. In 2009 and 2010 he served as the Defensive Coordinator for Division III Birmingham-Southern College. While at BSC, he coached two All-Conference players, and led a man-down defensive unit that ranked among the top in the country. Ingalsbe also served as the athletic department’s Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach. Shawn Rieg is entering his third year as an assistant with the Centenary men’s lacrosse program. Rieg was an assistant basketball coach at West Morris Central High School in 2008-2009 and then served on the staff of the varsity team at Voorhees High School in 2010. Rieg has worked as a coach in some capacity since the Spring of 2006, when he was an assistant for the Indian Valley High School varsity tennis team. He then was the head coach for Long Valley Recreation basketball in 2006-07, followed by a stint at the Catholic Youth Organization in Long Valley, N.J. Rieg received a B.A. in Secondary Education – Social Studies from Penn State University in 2006. He began his collegiate career at PSU-Hazleton, spending two seasons on the men’s basketball team, before transferring to Penn State. While at Hazleton, Rieg earned All-CCAC Academic accolades.
John Lade joins the Cyclones for his first season as an assistant coach after graduating from Syracuse University this past May with a B.S. in Biology. Lade was a three-year starting defender for the Orange from 2009-2011 and was named a three-time All-American, including two First-Team honors in 2010 and 2011. With the Orange, Lade was named the 2011 NCAA Division I Defensemen of the Year and was a member of the Division I National Championship Team in 2009. Aside from playing in college, Lade was also a member of the U-19 Men’s U.S.A. Lacrosse Team that won the gold medal at the ILF World Championship in Vancouver, Canada in 2008. Lade also has experience coaching for youth/young adult lacrosse programs around New Jersey and worked working for the LB3 Lacrosse Program in Atlanta, Georgia. Ryan Whipple enters his first season with the Centenary lacrosse program. Whipple comes to the Cyclones after playing four years of lacrosse at the University of New Haven. For the past few years, Whipple has served as a claims adjuster for Raphael and Associates, Paladin Adjuster Group and Travelers Insurance. Whipple graduated with dual B.A. degrees in Fire Administration Management and Arson Investigation from the University of New Haven.
SEASON PREVIEW The Centenary College men’s lacrosse team looks to bounce back from a disappointing end to the 2011 season, when it finished 6-7 overall with a 1-5 CSAC mark and was plagued by numerous injuries to key players late in the year. Leading the way in the 2012 season for the Cyclones will be two returning Second Team All-Conference players in juniors Conor Nolan and Robert Nuzzolese, who have been named Pre-Season All-Conference picks by InsideLacrosse.com. Joining the two juniors are senior goalie Kyle McVay and junior defender Sean Lowe, who both received All-Conference honorable mention accolades last season and look to step up as team captains this season along with Nolan and junior transfer Cameron Gunn. Gunn joins the Cyclones after a two-year stint at Broome Community College, where he was named All-Conference, All-Division and All-Tournament for the Hornets. Head Coach Matt Klank is looking forward to big contributions from Gunn this season as he joins the Cyclones: “He is an absolutely special player and we think he has the potential to be the best player in the conference. We expect him to get a lot of attention from the best defensemen every game. He was already named captain after only two months of being here, so you can tell he is special.” Coach Klank is also thrilled about his coaching staff for the upcoming season as he brings back a lot of continuity within his staff while also adding two new assistant coaches who look to be key assets for the Cyclones this year. “I think this is the best staff we’ve ever had,” Klank says. Returning with Klank are Bo Ingalsbe and Shawn Rieg who both look to add some tradition and continuity to the staff after their experiences with the team in years past. Joining the two returning assistants are two major additions in Ryan Whipple and John Lade, who are expected to add a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team this year. Lade is a former three-time All-American and Defenseman of the Year from the NCAA Champion Syracuse men’s lacrosse team who brings a new energy to the team. Whipple is a former starter for the University of New Haven who looks to help the Cyclones in coaching face-offs this year. The key for the Cyclones this year will be their strength in the net as they return the senior goalie in McVay who last season finished ranked 13th in the nation in save percentage (.627), 27th in saves per game (12.8), and 66th in goals against average (8.64). “I think we’re returning the best goalie in the conference,” Klank said.
Joining McVay in net will be freshman Grant Nice, who shows tremendous potential. Coach Klank expects him to be the future for the Cyclones in the net. The Cyclones have the most depth at their defensive slots this year, led by junior captain Lowe, who Klank says is one of the best defenseman in the conference. At the top of the defense, the Cyclones have a strong combination of long stick midfielders returning in Ray Schmitz and Brandon Rossi, who look to make big contributions this season. Down low, the Cyclones have a lot of young talent joining the team, including Patrick Johnston, Brock Minninger and Kyle Peters, who are expected to see significant time after a strong fall season. “Although we don’t have much depth at the attack and midfield positions,” Coach Klank says, “our two best players play attack and midfield.” The Cyclones look for big contributions from Gunn and Nolan this season from those positions and believe they have a solid foundation regardless of the limited depth they may have at those spots. This season they have also added some fresh new talent up top that are expected to provide nice targets in the crease for Gunn, as well as new members to help solidify the Cyclone midfield behind Nolan. Coach Klank looks forward to seeing the members of his new 2012 team and believes each one of his players will see time out on the field this season. The Cyclones are returning an older team this year and expect a lot of the team to step up as leaders whether they are labeled as “team captain” or not. “We expect all our upperclassmen to be leaders. If you’re not a captain, it doesn’t mean you can’t be a leader. Being a leader is more than just playing well on the field, it’s taking care of everything off the field as well, from in the classroom to helping out in the community” says Klank. As for the newcomers joining the team this season, Coach Klank expects them to grow and develop as players as they will see significant time on the field, and hopes they can stray away from the typical freshman struggles of being “consistently inconsistent” and become solid contributors to the Cyclones moving forward. Looking ahead to the 2012 season, Coach Klank thinks this is going to be the hardest schedule the Cyclones have faced, but expects the team to play hard every game and step up to the competition this year. “We can’t coach effort, but if they play hard and we did a good job preparing them for the game, we won’t be disappointed no matter what the outcome will be.”
