“It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011. Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition. SUPPORT SERVICES FITNESS CENTER
The Fitness Center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new, state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athletes’ seasonal fitness needs.
ATHLETIC TRAINING
The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physician Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A. Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Assistant Trainer Dana Baffuto and Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies. Damon received her B.S. in Health Science from Slippery Rock University and M.S. in Theory of Sports Medicine from Springfield College in Massachusetts. She was the Head Athletic Trainer at New Jersey City University before accepting the position at Centenary College in 2004. Damon was selected as an Athletic Trainer for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, working at the equestrian and mountain biking venues. Baffuto is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University where she received a Masters of Science degree in both Sports Management and Athletic Training. Davies earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Academics are Centenary’s number one priority and therefore we offer a number of support services to our student-athletes to make sure they are on the right path to a successful academic career. Each student-athlete is required to attend study hall in their first year at Centenary to aid them in their transition between high school and the demands of college academics. Professors are also encouraged to send progress reports on student-athletes to the athletic staff for academic monitoring. If a student-athlete is struggling in a class, Centenary offers tutors at no cost for any class. This is just another way that Centenary provides unparalleled service to its students.

McCloskey holds a Master’s of Education – Guidance/Counseling from Lynchburg College, as well as a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from the University of Delaware. As an athlete at UD, he earned All-American Midfield honors in lacrosse, led the team to four East Coast Conference Championships and was a two-time All-Regional soccer striker.
The 2011 team received six All-CSAC postseason awards. Juniors Danielle Bay and Meredith Bruce led the way, as each were named to the First Team, while sophomores Alysia Pinkerton and Nicole Judd took home Second Team accolades and junior Hannah Ally and sophomore Allie Swartz were given Honorable Mentions. Centenary’s six conference victories included a 16-10 win over eventual conference champion Gwynedd-Mercy. The team finished in a three-way tie for the second-best record in the conference and earned the fourth seed after tiebreakers. In the opening round of the tournament, CC dropped a close contest to Neumann, 13-10. The team matched its on-field success with 11 CSAC All-Academic Team accolades off the field. The 2010 campaign saw the team go 13-2, 7-1 in the CSAC, setting program records in wins and conference victories . The Cyclones reached the CSAC semifinals for the first time in program history, falling in a hard-fought 14-12 contest to Gwynedd-Mercy. The team finished first in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 19.3 goals per game. Seniors Megan Mars and Kiti Ovaskainen led CC, as each received First Team All-CSAC and Second Team ECAC South All-Star honors. Mars set program records with 117 points and 95 goals and led the nation in points per game. Ovaskainen recorded a Centenary single-season best 106 groundballs, leading the nation in that category, and also tallied a single-season best 31 assists. Junior Lauren LaMotta was also named First Team All-CSAC while Bay, Pinkerton and Swartz received Honorable Mention accolades. In 2009, the team went 7-4 overall, 3-4 in the CSAC, and two Cyclones took home All-Conference honors, as Michelle Garone was named to the First Team and Ovaskainen earned an Honorable Mention. In 2008, Centenary earned its first-ever berth to the conference tournament, falling to the College of Notre Dame in the opening round, 12-11. Ovaskainen was the nation’s leader in groundballs in 2008. From 1988-2003, McCloskey was the head men’s lacrosse coach at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. There, he built a winning Division I program without the benefit of athletic scholarships. McCloskey earned Patriot League Coach of the Year honors in 1999 after guiding Lehigh to a conference championship while posting the programs’ best record in school history at 12-3. The team was ranked nationally six times during his time there, and produced the 1999 nation’s best man-down unit and top goal scorer. McCloskey coached two Patriot League Defensive Players of the Year during his career at Lehigh. After leaving the Division I level, he took over the Emmaus High School boy’s program in 2006 and led the team to a perfect 8-0 record and the Lehigh Valley Conference Championship. season preview
Head Coach John McCloskey believes that every team in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) has improved. McCloskey also believes that with five returning All-CSAC players and some talented newcomers, the Cyclones women’s lacrosse team will also elevate their level of play, and can be in the hunt for the CSAC championship.
Last season the Cyclones continued the program’s success by going 9-5 overall and 6-2 in CSAC play, earning them the number four seed in the conference tournament where Centenary fell to the fifth seeded Neumann University. The season featured big wins over Gwynedd-Mercy, who would go on to win the CSAC Tournament, and Farmingdale State. Centenary returns a bulk of their offense for 2012, with players who accounted for 177 of the 210 goals coming back. Leading the way for the Cyclones will be the midfield led by senior Danielle Bay who McCloskey cites as one of the best overall lacrosse players he has coached at Centenary. Bay led the team in goals (44) and points (57) last year earning her a spot on the All-CSAC First Team. Joining Bay at midfield will be junior Alysia Pinkerton who scored 27 times and assisted on eight others, and a talented freshman, Brittlyn Dendy. In addition to the midfield which he believes is the top strength of the team, McCloskey also has high expectations for his attack. With senior Meredith Bruce and juniors Allie Swartz and Nicole Judd returning, McCloskey believes the addition of freshman Rebecca Balfour will continue the offensive production the Cyclones have experienced in years past. Bruce finished the season with offensive production paralleling Bay nearly perfectly, as Bruce tallied 42 goals and 13 assists helping the Cyclones’ attack. Swartz contributed with 36 goals and 16 assists, as Judd, who McCloskey says has improved every aspect of her game, added 18 goals a year ago. Defensively the Cyclones are looking to work in eight players in front of goal this year. The Cyclones will benefit from an experienced group of defenders including seniors Chelsea Gummerson, Kellie Dugan, and Kim Kupper as well as juniors Andrea Senkarik, Kellie Rose and Arden Wright. The experienced defense will help pave the way for newcomer, senior Kelsey Walter, a four year member of the volleyball team, who is new to McCloskey’s team. McCloskey states that Dugan and Wright will slide up onto offense on occasion as well. Coach McCloskey, an offensive minded coach says he looks to continued improvement from the defense and in goal this season, crediting Assistant Coach Rachel Peregrim for her efforts. “There were many years where I didn’t have a defensive coach. Rachel is our defensive coordinator and she has developed a special relationship
with the ladies who play defense. She has done a great job in that area.”
In goal for Centenary will be junior Danielle Trucksess who is relatively new to the position after playing on defense previously. McCloskey is impressed with her progress and believes her unorthodox style can benefit the Cyclones, stating that most good goalies are a bit unorthodox. Leading the Cyclones onto the field this season will be captains, Bay, Rose, Pinkerton, and Judd. McCloskey states that with good leadership, the 2012 season looks promising. “The team has a good chemistry right now. This group listens and learns and has a special energy that comes forth in and out of practice,” states McCloskey. “It can be a fun spring.” McCloskey believes the Cyclones, who fell in the first round of the CSAC Tournament, will be in the top half of the CSAC again this season. However, he points out the competitiveness of the conference: “Marywood in my opinion is head and shoulders above the rest of the conference in terms of talent and history,” says McCloskey who also points to Gwynedd-Mercy, Neumann, Cabrini and Immaculata as teams who will all be in the mix along with Centenary. McCloskey believes the Cyclones have a great amount of potential. He believes if there was a little more depth to the roster, Centenary would be a favorite to win the CSAC, but with a smaller roster of 15 players, the potential to win the conference remains, but many things will need to break right for the Cyclones including remaining healthy. McCloskey is proud of the direction his team leaders have taken the team recently stating the program now has quality leadership and discipline and wants to work hard. “When I give them a day off, they wonder why,” explains a proud McCloskey. With the strong work ethic and an experienced group of returning players with proven ability, the Cyclones’ 2012 season looks to be an exciting, successful campaign. Centenary opens the season at home on Saturday, March 3rd versus SUNY-Canton. Centenary will play four non-conference games to start the season before opening CSAC play versus Cedar Crest College on March 19th.
