“It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011. Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition. OUR MISSION STATEMENT Centenary College is a community of learners distinguished by a diverse student body, a dedicated faculty and staff and stimulating educational opportunities. Centenary College is committed to a quality liberal arts and career studies education with a substantial international dimension to engage students in learning and prepare them for satisfying careers, successful lives, community service and lifelong intellectual pursuits. OUR ATHLETIC PHILOSOPHY Every coach’s mission is to provide the student-athlete with a competitive program and the opportunity to achieve excellence individually or as part of a team. The phrase “the teaching coach,” committed to the students, best describes our philosophy while maintaining a strong academic profile. As coaches we serve as both educators and leaders. Centenary’s goal is to maximize the human potential of our student-athletes. Our holistic approach stresses the fundamentals of the games we play as well as the values of responsibility, discipline and commitment. We know that these principles will translate into victories, but more importantly, they will develop young people with character. Those who compete and graduate become true champions, for they will understand what it means to be committed to excellence. ABOUT OUR ATHLETIC PROGRAM At Centenary College we nurture and encourage true competitive integrity. Our school adheres to a strict code of conduct from the recruiting process all the way to the NCAA Championships. Our coaches, administrators and staff members all take an active role in monitoring and insuring our compliance with all NCAA, Conference and College regulations. Centenary sponsors 13 men’s and women’s teams at the Division III level, and our Athletic Department continues to grow. We remain committed to developing our Athletic Department into one of the best small-college programs in the country. With the help of our dedicated coaches, staff and student-athletes we can see that dream come to reality. As a student-athlete, we will ask you to represent the College’s intercollegiate athletics program both on and off the field with integrity, professionalism and competitiveness. During your years at Centenary you will be asked to make sacrifices, but these sacrifices will be well rewarded by relationships and memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

SUPPORT SERVICES FITNESS CENTER The Fitness Center, located in Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new, state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athletes’ seasonal fitness needs.

ATHLETIC TRAINING The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physician Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A. Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon and Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies. Damon received her B.S. in Health Science from Slippery Rock University and M.S. in Theory of Sports Medicine from Springfield College in Massachusetts. She was the Head Athletic Trainer at New Jersey City University before accepting the position at Centenary College in 2004. Damon was selected as an Athletic Trainer for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, working at the equestrian and mountain biking venues. Davies earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT Academics are Centenary’s number one priority and therefore we offer a number of support services to our student-athletes to make sure they are on the right path to a successful academic career. Each student-athlete is required to attend study hall in their first year at Centenary to aid them in their transition between high school and the demands of college academics. Professors are also encouraged to send progress reports on student-athletes to the athletic staff for academic monitoring. If a student-athlete is struggling in a class, Centenary offers tutors at no cost for any class. This is just another way that Centenary provides unparalleled service to its students.

COACHING STAFF Head coach Keith O’Connor enters his eighth season as the head soccer coach at Centenary College. Since becoming the head coach, he has transformed CC from a program that won just three games the year before his arrival into a highly competitive program in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) and the region. After winning just nine games in his first two seasons, Centenary has 45 victories in the last five years. O’Connor has led Centenary to one Skyline Athletic Conference Tournament (2006) and three consecutive CSAC Tournament appearances (2008-10) in the last five seasons. In 2010, the team finished the year 10-9-1, including 6-3 in the conference. Centenary earned the fourth-seed in the conference tournament and hosted Keystone in the opening round. CC shut out the Giants, 4-0, to advance to its first conference tournament semifinals in program history. There, the Cyclones battled but eventually fell to the top seed and eventual champion, Neumann, 2-0. Patrick Bourland and Kyle Thompson were each named Second Team All-CSAC and Andrew Pinnella and Matt Winkler received Honorable Mention accolades. Pinnella set a program-record with 10 assists on the year. Off the field, 12 Cyclones earned CSAC All-Academic status and the program received six National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-Region honors. Under O’Connor, the Cyclones have excelled just as much in the classroom as they have on the playing field. The 2007 team posted the highest combined GPA at Centenary (3.08) out of the 13 sport teams. The 2007 and 2009 squads featured players with the highest GPA (3.78 and 3.83, respectively) of all male student-athletes at the college. Individually, Centenary men’s soccer has groomed 30 CSAC All-Academic Team award winners and has delivered 20 NSCAA Scholar All-Region studentathletes and three ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans since O’Connor became the head coach. After the 2010 season, O’Connor has a record of 54-73-7 (.429), and has gone 16-16-2 (.500) against CSAC opponents since joining the conference four years ago. The 2009 campaign saw the Cyclones reach the conference tournament thanks to a 3-4-2 CSAC mark, where they fell to Immaculata, 2-0. Three student-athletes received All-CSAC accolades, including two Second Team awards. Off the field, 12 players were named to the CSAC All-Academic Team and two

earned NSCAA/adidas All-East-Region Scholar-Athlete honors. Centenary finished the 2008 campaign 10-10-1, earning the fifth seed in the CSAC Tournament with a record of 4-4-0. It did not take the Cyclones long to join the elite teams in the conference as the berth into the CSAC Tournament was its first since joining the conference in 2007. The Cyclones squad also earned an ECAC Metro Region Tournament berth for the second time in three years. Five Cyclones received All-CSAC postseason honors, including two named to the first team, one earning second team accolades, and two took home honorable mentions. In 2006, O’Connor led the Cyclones to an 11-10-0 record, and placed third in the Skyline Athletic Conference with a record of 6-3-0. That mark earned the program its best conference finish and its first Skyline Athletic Conference tournament berth since joining the Skyline in 2003. The eleven wins also marked the most wins by a Cyclone team since 1999. In the process, the Cyclones earned an ECAC Metro Region Tournament berth, its first-ever appearance. Three team members were named to the Skyline postseason teams, including two First Team awards and one Second Team selection. Furthermore, Centenary garnered two NSCAA All-Region players and touted its first-ever conference Rookie of the Year. O’Connor was named the Skyline Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and Centenary College Coach of the Year. Both were firsts of his career. Prior to his arrival at Centenary, O’Connor was the Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach at the University of Delaware from 20012004. At Delaware, O’Connor was actively involved with the organization and development of a nationally competitive Division I men’s soccer program. He helped guide the Fightin’ Blue Hens to a record of 13-34-10. Their best season was in 2001, when Delaware went 7-11-1. He also coached the AC Milan club team in 2002 and 2003. During his two years with AC Milan, the team advanced to the U-17 Delaware State Cup finals in 2003 and the U-16 semifinals in 2002. O’Connor also served as a player assessor for the Delaware Olympic Development Program (ODP). Before taking over the assistant coach responsibilities at Delaware, O’Connor served as the Head Junior Varsity coach at his alma mater, Ridgewood High School. While at Ridgewood, he led the Maroons to a two-season record of 23-9-5 and berths in the Bergen County Tournament Semi-Finals in 2000 and Finals in 1999. The team also won the Northern New Jersey Interscholastic League-A title in 2000. As a player, O’Connor enjoyed a successful playing career

COACHING STAFF at the high school, club and collegiate levels. He became the first freshman to start for the varsity squad in Ridgewood High School history, and in his four years at Ridgewood, he captained the team for two years, captured one Northern New Jersey Interscholastic League Championship, two Bergen County Tournament Championships and two New Jersey State Sectional titles. O’Connor earned such accolades as All-League, All-Area, All-County and All-State. He was also named one of the top twenty-two players in the state in his junior and senior years. O’Connor completed his high school career as one of the school’s all-time great players. He still ranks among the Maroons career leaders in points (second), goals (third), and assists (first). He was inducted into the Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. A former Division I player recruited to Loyola College, Md. (now Loyola University, Md.), O’Connor played four seasons from 1994-1999, helping lead the regionally ranked men’s soccer team to an impressive 50-29-6 record, two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships and two NCAA Play-In appearances in the 1994 and 1995 seasons. In 1999, O’Connor earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola College, Md., in Communications, specializing in Advertising. His accreditations include a United States Soccer Federation ‘B’ coaching license and a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. O’Connor and his wife, Ellen, currently reside in Pennsylvania with their daughters, Cadence and Peighton. Gerry Montague enters his first season as assistant coach for the Centenary men’s soccer program. Montague spent last season as assistant coach for NJSA04’s U18 Development Academy team and was Director of Coaching for Hillsborough Soccer Club. Previously, he spent four years as the goal-

keeper coach with Hillsborough High School and brings over 15 years of experience coaching youth clubs throughout central and northern New Jersey. His accreditations include the USSF ‘B’ license, USSF Goalkeeping License, NSCAA Advanced National & Advanced National Goalkeeping diplomas and USYS National Youth License. Montague has also completed coursework with the English Football Association and National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). Montague holds a Bachelors degree from Seton Hall University and a Masters degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University - Irvine. He resides in Bridgewater, N.J. Josh Spivack enters his third season with the Centenary men’s soccer team after a three-year career as a player for the Cyclones. As a player, Spivack enjoyed a successful three year playing career. He finished with 16 points on five goals and six assists, including career-highs in points (10), goals (three) and assists (four) as a sophomore. He earned two NSCAA Scholar All-Region honors during his playing career. Spivack ranks among Centenary’s career leaders in assists and was recognized as a team captain. During his three years, Centenary appeared in two conference tournamentsand qualifed for the ECAC tournament twice. Following his collegiate career, Spivack joined Royal Racing FC Montegnee a professional club in Belgium where he also continued his education. He has completed and received his NJYSA “F” license. Spivack holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in Sports Management from Centenary. He also currently coaches with Cerdafied Soccer Training programs which works with youth clubs throughout North Jersey.

SEASON PREVIEW The Centenary College men’s soccer team looks forward to the 2011 season behind head coach Keith O’Connor as he enters his eighth year at the helm of the Cyclones. Last season, CC struggled early on as it dropped its first four contests, including a painful overtime loss at home to Penn State UniversityBourland Altoona. Fortunately, O’Connor and the Cyclones were able to turn it around to finish the season at 10-9-1, including a 7-1 record at home. The Cyclones look to build upon last year’s late success as they finished the 2010 season in the semi-finals of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) tournament where they lost to eventual CSAC tournament champion Neumann University. O’Connor and his team look forward to an increased amount of talent and depth this season and hope to start the season strong and carry their momentum into conference play. The 2011 team is led by second year captain Patrick Bourland, who earned All-CSAC Second Team honors last season. The junior tallied four assists from his defensive position and helped the Cyclones shut out seven opponents. Bourland, along with the 11 seniors on the team, plan to step it up this season and share their maturity and experiences with the rest of the team to lead them to another conference tournament.

Berniz

season, Pinnella served as a major attribute to the team as he led the Cyclones in goals (11), assists (10), points (32) and shots (70) and set a single-season record for assists.

“Despite Pinnella’s tremendous performance last season, he was only awarded CSAC Honorable Mention,” said O’Connor. “He is using that as motivation to play even better this year and earn another spot on the CSAC AllConference Team.” Holding down the midfield are four returning seniors: Alex Walters, Luis Villacis, Jimmy Corey and three-time All-Conference performer Matt Winkler. Villacis is healthy after competing in only one game last season. His return and the combination of these seniors should provide for a solid foundation in the middle of the field and the coaching staff will look to this group to spark the momentum needed for a solid 2011 season.

Winkler

Senior Kyle Thompson, who earned Second Team AllCSAC honors in 2010, and sophomore Yuri Missenheim, who missed the second half of his freshman campaign due to injury, will also serve as key contributors for CC.

Pinnella

On the front lines, the Cyclones are led by returning forwards Andrew Pinnella, Daniel Berniz and Nick Telle. Last

Belanger

Rounding off the field is a solid group of defenders led by Bourland, who is not only the team’s captain, but also serves as a “tough, solid, vocal leader of the backfield,” according to O’Connor. Bourland is joined by returning defenders Antonio Cabrera, Reid Meeker, Alex Khouri and Justin Belanger.

SEASON PREVIEW The Cyclones are anchored by their senior goalkeeper Jason Rogers, who has continuously proven to be a strong asset to the team and one of the better stoppers in the conference. Rogers ranks among the top four in Rogers Cyclones’ history in saves and save percentage, and is the current recordholder for goals against average (1.65) and shutouts (12) for Centenary College. Backing up Rogers are three standout keepers. Sophomore Harry Walters started two games in 2010 and posted 13 saves, junior Brian Almeida also played in two games and tallied five saves and senior Tyler DeCraine started twice last year and recorded 10 saves. A. Walter

Joining the solid group of returners this season are a strong class of newcomers including freshmen Quinn Khouri and Michael Marin. Khouri looks to become an offensive threat for the Cyclones with his speed and toughness and Marin will see time in the midfield. Centenary also gained a pair of transfers in Ian Douglas and Victor Dorismond. Douglas came to CC from Kean University and is expected to have an immediate impact on the team

thanks to his quickness and excellent skills in the midfield. Dorismond and freshmen Dylan Bricker and Charlton Duncan will be competing for playing time for the Cyclones. A. Khouri

Seniors Michael Goepp and David Petrozziello each missed last season due to injury but are expected to help the team in 2011. CC is also dealing with preseason injuries to Walters and Belanger, but the coaching staff expect both to bounce back quickly and provide a positive attribute to the team this season.

“If healthy, this team has unlimited potential,” said O’Connor. “This squad features an excellent combination of leadership and experience along with young talent. The players are all working hard and their dedication will be key to a successful season.”

Corey

The Cyclones are fortunate to have a home-filled schedule this season and will open the season on Thursday, Sept. 1 at home against Baruch College on the Cyclone Athletic Field. Conference play for the Cyclones begins on Wednesday, Sept. 28 when they travel to Immaculata to take on the Mighty Macs.
