Centenary College Athletics Our Athletic Philosophy
Every coach’s mission is to provide the student-athlete with a competitive program and the opportunity to achieve excellence individually or as part of a team. The phrase “the teaching coach,” committed to the students, best describes our philosophy while maintaining a strong academic profile. As coaches, we serve as both educators and leaders. Centenary’s goal is to maximize the human potential of our student-athletes. Our holistic approach stresses the fundamentals of the games we play as well as the values of responsibility, discipline, and commitment. We know that these principles will translate into victories, but more importantly, they will develop young people with character. Those who compete and graduate become true champions, for they will understand what it means to be committed to excellence.
About Our Athletic Program
At Centenary College we nurture and encourage true competitive integrity. Our school adheres to a strict code of conduct from the recruiting process all the way to the NCAA Championships. Our coaches, administrators and staff members all take an active role in monitoring and insuring our compliance with all NCAA, Conference and College regulations. Centenary sponsors 13 men’s and women’s teams at the Division III level, and our Athletic Department continues to grow. We remain committed to developing our Athletic Department into one of the best small-college programs in the country. With the help of our dedicated coaches, staff and student-athletes we can see that dream come to reality. As a student-athlete, we will ask you to represent the College’s intercollegiate athletics program both on and off the field with integrity, professionalism and competitiveness. Athletic Training and Conditioning The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physicial Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Dana Baffuto. The fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athlete’s seasonal fitness needs.

Head coach Keith O’Connor finished his eighth season as the head soccer coach at Centenary
College. Since becoming the head coach, he has transformed CC from a program that won just three games the year before his arrival into a highly competitive program in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) and the region. After winning just nine games in his first two seasons, Centenary has 54 victories in the last six years. O’Connor has led Centenary to one Skyline Athletic Conference Tournament (2006) and three consecutive CSAC Tournament appearances (2008-10) in the last six seasons. The 2011 team concluded with a 9-7-2 overall record, 4-5 in CSAC play. The Cyclones went into the final game needing a win or tie vs. Rosemont to advance to the CSAC Tourament. Unfortunately, Rosemont outlasted Centenary 1-0 keeping the Cyclones from a fourth straight tournament berth. Coach O’Connor’s squad was honored with five post season accolades. Andrew Pinella, Quinn Khouri and Patrick Bourland all earned Second Team All-CSAC honors, while Matt Winkler received a place on the Honorable Mention All-CSAC Team. Rounding out the postseason honors was Reid Meeker who was placed on the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team. The Cyclones reached several indivdual achievements in 2011. Pinnella became Centenary’s all-time leader in goals with 37, points (93), assists (19), and game-winning goals (12) as well as several other categories. Along with Pinnella, Jason Rogers became the school’s all-time saves leader (294) and the all-time leader in wins (27). In 2010, the team finished the year 10-9-1, including 6-3 in the conference. Centenary earned the fourth-seed in the conference tournament and hosted Keystone in the opening round. CC shut out the Giants, 4-0, to advance to its first conference tournament semifinals in program history. There, the Cyclones battled but eventually fell to the top seed and eventual champion, Neumann, 2-0. Patrick Bourland and Kyle Thompson were each named Second Team All-CSAC and Andrew Pinnella and Matt Winkler received Honorable Mention accolades. Pinnella set a program-record with 10 assists on the year. Off the field, 12 Cyclones earned CSAC All-Academic status and the program received six National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Scholar All-Region honors.
Under O’Connor, the Cyclones have excelled just as much in the classroom as they have on the playing field. The 2007 team posted the highest combined GPA at Centenary (3.08) out of the 13 sport teams. The 2007 and 2009 squads featured players with the highest GPA (3.78 and 3.83, respectively) of all male student-athletes at the college. Individually, Centenary men’s soccer has groomed 41 CSAC All-Academic Team award winners and has delivered 20 NSCAA Scholar All-Region student-athletes and three ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans since O’Connor became the head coach. After the 2011 season, O’Connor has a record of 63-80-9, and has gone 20-22-2 against CSAC opponents since joining the conference five years ago. The 2009 campaign saw the Cyclones reach the conference tournament thanks to a 3-4-2 CSAC mark, where they fell to Immaculata, 2-0. Three student-athletes received All-CSAC accolades, including two Second Team awards. Off the field, 12 players were named to the CSAC All-Academic Team and two earned NSCAA/adidas All-East-Region Scholar-Athlete honors. Centenary finished the 2008 campaign 10-10-1, earning the fifth seed in the CSAC Tournament with a record of 4-4-0. It did not take the Cyclones long to join the elite teams in the conference as the berth into the CSAC Tournament was its first since joining the conference in 2007. The Cyclones squad also earned an ECAC Metro Region Tournament berth for the second time in three years. Five Cyclones received All-CSAC postseason honors, including two named to the first team, one earning second team accolades, and two took home honorable mentions. In 2006, O’Connor led the Cyclones to an 11-10-0 record, and placed third in the Skyline Athletic Conference with a record of 6-3-0. That mark earned the program its best conference finish and its first Skyline Athletic Conference tournament berth since joining the Skyline in 2003. The eleven wins also marked the most wins by a Cyclone team since 1999. In the process, the Cyclones earned an ECAC Metro Region Tournament berth, its first-ever appearance. Three team members were named to the Skyline postseason teams, including two First Team awards and one Second Team selection. Furthermore, Centenary garnered two NSCAA All-Region players and touted its first-ever conference Rookie of the Year. O’Connor was named the Skyline Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and Centenary College Coach of the Year. Both were firsts of his career.
Prior to his arrival at Centenary, O’Connor was the Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach at the University of Delaware from 2001-2004. At Delaware, O’Connor was actively involved with the organization and development of a nationally competitive Division I men’s soccer program. He helped guide the Fightin’ Blue Hens to a record of 13-34-10. Their best season was in 2001, when Delaware went 7-11-1. He also coached the AC Milan club team in 2002 and 2003. During his two years with AC Milan, the team advanced to the U-17 Delaware State Cup finals in 2003 and the U-16 semi-finals in 2002. O’Connor also served as a player assessor for the Delaware Olympic Development Program (ODP). Before taking over the assistant coach responsibilities at Delaware, O’Connor served as the Head Junior Varsity coach at his alma mater, Ridgewood High School. While at Ridgewood, he led the Maroons to a two-season record of 23-9-5 and berths in the Bergen County Tournament Semi-Finals in 2000 and Finals in 1999. The team also won the Northern New Jersey Interscholastic League-A title in 2000. As a player, O’Connor enjoyed a successful playing career at the high school, club and collegiate levels. He became the first freshman to start for the varsity squad in Ridgewood High School history, and in his four years at Ridgewood, he captained the team for two years, captured one Northern New Jersey Interscholastic League Championship, two Bergen County Tournament Championships and two New Jersey State Sectional titles. He earned such accolades as All-League, All-Area, All-County and All-State. He was also named one of the top twenty-two players in the state in his junior and senior years. O’Connor completed his high school career as one of the school’s all-time great players. He still ranks among the Maroons career leaders in points (second), goals (third), and assists (first). He was inducted into the Ridgewood High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. A former Division I player recruited to Loyola College, Md. (now Loyola University, Md.), O’Connor played four seasons from 1994-1999, helping lead the regionally ranked men’s soccer team to an impressive 50-29-6 record, two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships and two NCAA Play-In appearances in the 1994 and 1995 seasons. In 1999, O’Connor earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola College, Md., in Communications, specializing in Advertising. His accreditations include a United States Soccer Federation ‘B’ coaching license and a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. O’Connor and his wife, Ellen, currently reside in Pennsylvania with their daughters Cadence and Peighton.
Gerry Montague enters his second season as assistant coach for the Centenary men’s soccer
program. During the 2011 season, Montague helped the Cyclones goalkeepers set or extend four school records for career saves, wins, shut outs and goals against average while helping the men’s program to a 9-7-2 overall record. Prior to joining Centenary College, Montague was assistant coach for NJSA 04’s U18 USSF Development Academy team and Director of Coaching for Hillsborough Soccer Club. He brings over 15 years of experience coaching at the high school and club levels, and works as a goalkeeper trainer across central and northern New Jersey. His accreditations include the USSF ‘B’ License, USSF Goalkeeping License, NSCAA Premier and the Advanced National Goalkeeping Diplomas. Montague holds a Bachelors degree from Seton Hall University and a Masters degree from Concordia University.
Josh Spivack finished his third season with the Centenary men’s soccer team after a three-year
career as a player for the Cyclones.
As a player, Spivack enjoyed a successful three year playing career. He finished with 16 points on five goals and six assists, including career-highs in points (10), goals (three) and assists (four) as a sophomore. He earned two NSCAA Scholar All-Region honors during his playing career. Spivack ranks among Centenary’s career leaders in assists and was recognized as a team captain. During his three years, Centenary appeared in two conference tournamentsand qualifed for the ECAC tournament twice. Following his collegiate career, Spivack joined Royal Racing FC Montegnee a professional club in Belgium where he also continued his education. He has completed and received his NJYSA “F” license. Spivack holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in Sports Management from Centenary. He also currently coaches with Cerdafied Soccer Training programs which works with youth clubs throughout North Jersey.
Season Preview After a disappointing finish to the 2011 season, Head Coach Keith O’Connor and his staff look for a season of redemption in the 2012 season. Last year, the Cyclones just missed a chance at the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament as they fell to Rosemont College 1-0 in a deciding game on a snow-covered Neumann University field last October 30th, pushing them just one game out of playoff reach. After a 9-7-2 finish last season, the Cyclones bring in a fresh young class of newcomers to the 2012 squad to compliment a group of returning starters led by captains Patrick Bourland and Reid Meeker. Looking to fill the key losses of Andrew Pinnella, Jason Rogers, and Jimmy Corey, the 2012 squad brings in three key newcomers that O’Connor hopes will fill the gaps. Glenn Brennen, a four-year varsity player from Butler Area High School looks to make a big impact in the backfield this year while turning to the speed and agility of Abiodun Lawal, an All-Conference and All-Essex County midfielder from Irvington that should give the Cyclones a strong presence on the outside. After losing the Cyclones’ All-Time leader in wins, shut-out, and goals against, the 2012 squad will have a tough competition between freshman goalkeeper in Jesse Goleman, a three-time City Champion for Taylor Allderdice High School, and returning junior Harry Walters. The 2012 squad also has leadership spread across their field as Bourland starts his third consecutive season as team captain after earning Second Team All-Conference honors last season. Joining him will be first-time captain in Meeker who played a vital role in the 2011 defense. Aside from the two captains, Coach O’Connor will turn towards junior defender Antonio Cabrera, senior midfielder Alex Khouri, and sophomore midfielder Quinn Khouri to create opportunities for the Cyclones.
Season Preview
Centenary will also be looking for junior Nick Telle to step up this season at forward in Pinnella’s absence after Telle finished last season tied for second with Quinn Khouri for goals, assists, and points. Telle also played in 17 of the Cyclones’ 18 games last season, proving his hard-work and ability to capitalize on the field both as a bench player and starter. Joining Telle at forward will be junior Edward Medow who Coach O’Connor hopes can give some solid offensive help off the bench for the Cyclones this season. At midfield, Quinn and Alex Khouri and Bourland will be joined by the young new talent in Lawal, as well as newcomers Joseph Bachman and Nick DePasquale. The mix of youth and leadership should serve as a strong foundation at midfield for the Cyclones. In the backfield, Brennen, Cabrera, and Meeker will be joined by seniors Justin Belanger and David Petrozziello who are both looking to return to the field after suffering injuries during their time as Cyclones. The defense will also look for strong contributions by newcomers Jason Bernier, Keith Salkind, and Jack Kim who look to earn their spot in the starting lineup. Coach O’Connor looks for big scoring opportunities from Kim who helps provide the Cyclones with a strong presence in the box. After their 9-7-2 record last season, including a 4-5 conference mark, the CSAC Coaches’ Pre-Season Poll puts the Cyclones picked to finish in sixth place this year, a seeding Coach O’Connor is happy with but hopes to improve upon in the rapidly growing CSAC conference.
Season Preview The Cyclones will have no easy task ahead of them however as they open the season with a series of road trips including their first appearance in the Seahawk Classic in St. Mary’s City, Md. against the tough challengers Salisbury University and host St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The out of conference schedule doesn’t end there either as the Cyclones must take on Eastern University and Wesley College later in the year, two school’s that will give Centenary a battle and make the Cyclones prove their skills. In conference, the Cyclones will open the season with a tough challenge as they play their first three CSAC games on the road, traveling to take on Rosemont College, Neumann University, and Marywood University before returning home to host Baptist Bible College on October 6th. In the middle of that road trip will be one of the Cyclones toughest challenges at Neumann University, as the Knights took down #1 ranked Messiah in the NCAA Tournament last year. Coming into the 2012 season, the Knights were picked 22nd in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Coach O’Connor and the 2012 team will look finish the year in strong form with three of their last four games at home as they fight for a berth in the CSAC Tournament, ending the regular season on October 27th against Gwynedd-Mercy College. After just missing the tournament last season, Coach O’Connor looks forward to the 2012 season as both his assistant coaches, Gerry Montague (second year) and Josh Spivack (fourth year), will be returning to staff.

1995 Championship Team The 1995 Men’s Soccer Team had the best season in the history of Centenary soccer. The squad won the National Small College Athletic Association Championship that year, defeating Michigan Christian College 3-1 in Rochester Hills, Mich. In 2010, the ‘95 team was inducted into the Centenary College Athletic Hall of Fame for their remarkable year. Centenary’s Javier Velasco was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player while Jean LaForest, Osei Sarabo and Sam Mensah all found the back of the net for the Cyclones. Goalkeeper Jim Vacca recorded seven saves to preserve the victory. Mensah gave Centenary a 1-0 lead at the 5:30 mark but MCC tied the game five minutes later. The score remained 1-1 until the 88th minute, when Velasco sent in a corner kick that the Michigan Christian goalkeeper saved, but LaForest was able to knock in the rebound for the 2-1 lead. Centenary maintained that edge until, with 33 seconds remaining in the contest, Sarabo converted a Mensah shot to account for the final goal of the game. The 1995 team finished the season with a record of 17-3-1. The 17 victories remains the highest single-season wins total in program history. The team was led by head coach Tony Faticoni and assistant coaches Charlie Naimo and Rob Warren. The student-athletes on the squad were: Edmond Lubin, Dave Lakomy, Fernando Miranda, Michael Kelly, Colin Kellogg, Jean LaForest, Luckner Dor, Chris Polito, Oswald Kotei, Javier Velasco, Ivan Henderson, Sam Mensah, Zack Ressaissi, Osei Sarabo, Derrick Trim, Manny Galan and Jim Vacca.
Centenary College Turf Fund “It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011. Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition. To learn more about this exciting project or to make a contribution to The Cyclone Athletic Fund or The Athletic Turf Field Project, call Simone Knaaps at (908) 852-1400 ext. 2336 or email knaaps@centenarycollege.edu.

About the CSAC
The Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) – formerly known as the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) – was formed to meet the needs of small, private, four-year colleges in eastern Pennsylvania. As the institutions’ athletic programs continued to grow, it became increasingly necessary to address individual and collective concerns about intercollegiate athletics.
In November 1991, 10 charter member institutions with similar philosophies aligned to provide athletic competition for student-athletes from institutions with similar philosophies. The conference was formed to collectively recognize the importance of intercollegiate athletics in an educational setting and to increase institutional support without compromising academic integrity. These charter members voted unanimously to name the new conference the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), and on February 3, 1992, a press conference was held at Philadelphia’s Veteran’s Stadium to officially announce the formation of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC), with competition to begin in the 1992-1993 academic year. The first Constitution was drafted in June 1992 and in April 1993, the conference was granted Affiliate Membership in the NCAA. In its inaugural year, the conference sponsored 12 championships; today, the CSAC sponsors 17 championships in 15 sports. The conference qualifies and maintains Automatic Qualifiers (AQs) in 13 sports, sending the conference champion to NCAA Championships in Field Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Men’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Softball and Men’s and Women’s Tennis.

Members of the CSAC wholly embrace the NCAA Division III “student first” philosophy by ensuring that institutions place the overall educational experience and successful completion of academic programs above all else. For this reason, student-athletes are treated no differently than any member of the student population. CSAC members embrace gender equity among student-athletes and are committed to providing athletics programs that are equitable for both genders.
The CSAC is also wholly dedicated to service in the community, as the league has participated in such initiatives as Habitat for Humanity and the Eastern Polar Plunge, sponsored by the PA Special Olympics. Each CSAC member school also participates in various service initiatives both campus-wide and in their communities.
