Working around the dresscode DylanSTEVENS

director of digital media

As everyone has noticed, the dress code has allowed us an advantage of hoodies and any choice of color for our clothing that we choose to wear. This gives us much more room for creativity and leeway for pairing up different articles of clothing and hues that can set us uniquefrom everyone else but ultimately look fashionable and still be in dress code. This article willgive you inspiration for outfits you can wear in and out of school... High-Waisted Jeans Make your legs appear longer; Tuck your shirtsweatshirt in the front to give off the long legged look; Shows that you care about your style but don’t try too hard.

Bold Jewelry Can give a simple outfit a head turning effect. Also, the color coordination between the clothing and the jewelry can strengthen this effect. Colorful or Patterned Socks Adding unique socks will enhance the diversity of the look between footwear. Unique socks can be found in any popular stores (Pacsun, Urban Outfitters, etc...) and vary in color, design, and length. Cropped Jeans (Unisex) You can easily do this trend with a pair of scissors and your favorite (dress code approved) pair of denim jeans; Makes legs appear longer; Pair your cropped jeans up with your favorite shoes because these jeans allow easy visibility of your footwear.

How to survive freshman year gabbyHERNANDEZ editor-in-chief

Dear Freshman, Welcome to Countryside! First and foremost congratulations on passing middle school! As you have probably already figured out, High school is very different compared to middle school. Everyone does their own thing here, which means if you do not like what someone else is doing...Get over it (unless of course it is illegal). In order to “survive” high school, you will 100% want to stay out of all the drama! It is never worth

your time and/or effort! It will keep your focus away from school, which is not a good thing. Clubs are an amazing way to get involved with your school and help the community. Make sure you can join every club you possibly can! If you have a significant other please from the bottom of my heart do not make out with him/her in the hallway! It is so disgusting to walk down the hall and seeing someone else being swallowed whole. There is more time outside of school to do things of this nature. Grades are super serious and do affect what

college you will be getting into. Do not slack on your homework or studying! In the end you will thank yourself for caring about your grades. Spirit days are coming up, which means go to the thrift stores and/or raid your closet for anything you can wear for the big three days! Everyone looks forward to this... DO NOT RUIN IT FOR EVERYBODY ELSE! Also telling people they look lame for going all out is stupid because you are the lame one for not dressing up! I hope you have made a great lasting impression on your teachers, and wish you the best for your high school years!

Countryside introduces wall-to-wall academies katieGOSS

Art programs across the country have been in danger of being defunded for years and the push to keep them in schools has been even harder. Unfortunately, when districts have to make major budget cuts for their schools, the arts programs are the first to be cut into or totally defunded. In a 2009-10 study done in the United States, 94% of schools offered musical classes, 83% offered visual arts programs, 4% taught theater classes and 3% offered dance classes. Fortunately for Countryside High School, the school offers all of these arts classes to its students. Even better, Countryside will be adding a Performing Arts Academy starting for the 2018-19 school year! They will also be adding the Family and Consumer Science Academy and the Center for New Media Academy. The new academies will affect only incoming freshman starting next school year. The incoming

freshman will choose between one of the three academies, CCT, or ISTEM. When asked about the academies, Kristen Clausen, assistant principal, said, “All programs will grow every year to the point where, in four years, every student at Countryside will be a member of one of our academies”. Academies have been proven to help kids in many areas in their daily lives, including social, academics, and disciplinary departments. “Data has proven that when students are a part of an academy or a program in their school that academies increase and discipline decreases” Clausen said. However, with every new improvement, there is always a drawback in some regard. The good news is that there is only one major issue the school is worried about, and that is the scheduling process. Now that Countryside will have an Arts academy, and two others, the office will need to schedule students strictly according to their academy or program that they choose. A possible solution to this scheduling problem

could be to have guidance counselors for each new academy and existing programs. This way each counselor, or two, can deal with that specific area of scheduling to help out with the new processes. After that is all figured out, there will be no major issues to worry about, at least for right now. The only other High school in Pinellas county that offers a Performing Arts Academy is Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg. Thankfully, with Countryside’s new Performing Arts Academy, students going into high school can choose between the two high schools in the county, instead of all the students going to one high school in order to attend a Performing Arts academy. What the new academies hold for Countryside in the upcoming future no one knows for certain, but what we do know is that Countryside will never be the same high school again, and it is all for the better.

Harvey takes its toll on Houston katieGOSS

Friday, August 25th, Texas was hit by a ruthless natural disaster by the name of Hurricane Harvey. News was spread days before estimating how bad the hurricane would devastate areas in Texas. There was no mandatory evacuation and many did not, due to thinking it would not be as devastating as it was. Harvey hit Texas as a category 4 hurricane, with winds up to 130 MPH, and was estimated as 200 miles across in distance. The most cruel thing Harvey had done was drop its unexpected rainfall, as seen by most over the news or social media. How did Harvey become so destructive? In addition to the normal conditions needed for

such a devastating hurricane, climate change had a helping hand in making Harvey, as one article says. In an NPR analysis done in March of 2017, through the entire past winter, the Gulf stayed above 73 degrees Fahrenheit, when usually it stays between the high fifties and low seventies. The area of the Gulf where Harvey formed into a category 4 hurricane, measured to be four degrees Fahrenheit above its usually measured temperature. An NPR article stated, “The warm water and air above the Gulf means there’s more energy to drive a storm such as Harvey”. Harvey absorbed all the humidity in its path above the Gulf and then was said to have, “… wrung rain out over Texas like a sponge”. This led to Harvey’s most destructive feature, it’s flooding. Texas

received about 50 inches of rain, which is more than it ever receives in one year and as Harvey moved back out into the Gulf, it dumped an extra 15-25 inches of rainfall on Texas. Many people have lost their houses, cars, personal items, and some even lost their lives. A reported 60 people have been killed by Harvey with that number still rising, as many that were reported missing are being found. By the end of August, Harvey had moved back into the gulf where it eventually faded out. After the major destruction made by Harvey, just a couple weeks later a new hurricane by the name of Irma came through devastating many parts of Florida, after hitting islands and countries in the Atlantic.

Put some pep in your step

cheriBURKE

staff writer

Countryside high school’s students are pumped for October’s homecoming pep rally. A large majority of the students do wish for more pep rallies; the only one out of the entire year just isn’t enough for their spirit. Pep rallies serve a great purpose in boosting spirit and morale for the school. They do serve a purpose and help students and athletes develop a sense of school pride. People enjoy participating in athletic groups and it’s encouraging to school teams to have their school boost up their team’s confidence. It gets the teams revved up and ready to play, knowing the student’s have their backs. They really build up excitement for the game and brings everyone together as a big school family. Also, athletics like cheerleading get to participate and perform in these events. A lot of their practice goes to the one pep rally of the school year. They have different routines to perform and many people enjoying watching them. It gives the cheerleaders a chance to show off their competitive routines. A big majority of our students here at Countryside High School want more pep rallies. Students agree pep rallies are very inspirational and they encourage you to want to come to school and attend more of the athletic games. Pep rallies show the appreciation for everybody in the school. Not every student gets a chance to go to football games, but everybody goes to pep rallies. This is where students really get a glimpse of what goes on in school.

Hate crimes have been on the rise all over America. There have been multiple occurrences swarming the nation. A hate crime is motivated through racial, sexual, or other prejudice, while using violence. There have been a couple important events that have stuck out the most. One of recent light occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia. The protest started due to the planned removal of a Confederate monument. The statue is General Lee, the confederacy’s top officer, riding upon a horse. In 2015 there was a shooting of nine African American churchgoers in South Carolina by a white supremacist. Ever since this event the Southern states have been reconsidering their memorials from Confederate times. Charlottesville was soon filled with white nationalists, groups such as Neo-Nazis, and the Ku Klux Klan, arriving to protest the demolition of this historic statue aiming to “Unite the Right”. Soon after, there were many counter demonstrators in town to oppose the far right viewpoints such as Black Lives Matter activists, anti-fascist groups known as Antifa, and religious leaders. Due to the 1st amendment, Americans legally have the right to a peaceful protest. This event was nothing of that sort. There were over 30 people injured and 32 year old legal assistant, Heather Heyer, was killed on Friday August 11th. These monuments were from different times where the South was rebelling against the United States, trying to become their own nation and branch off. No one is born hating anyone, it is a trait that is unfortunately learned over time. Living in the 21st century, America as a population should be understanding of our many differences. Things such as religion, race, sexual orientation, or background should not affect someone’s view on a person. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Darkness cannot drive darkness; Light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; Love can do that.”(King, 1963). As a society we should strive to make it our goal where we

The Ups and Downs of Popular Music rachelLEWIS

After their performance of their hit song “Best Song Ever” during the 2013 VMA’s, former boyband One Direction was greeted with a crowd of boos. How is hatred cheered on in a culture where acceptance is at the forefront? A trend popular in our culture is shaming people who listen to music that plays on the “Top 40’s” stations. Being mean is glorified and people are praised for listening to music that could be considered underground. An unpopular opinion is the idea that it really does not take any special skill to be able to listen to and enjoy underground music. People feeling that they are more intelligent and superior than others for not listening to the songs on the radio is a part of our culture that myself and other students at Countryside High School think should go away. I went around and spoke to some students that attend our school and asked how they felt about pop music and the judgement that surrounds it. Everyone I spoke to had similar responses. Gigi Carsello, a senior at our school, is fine with listening to pop music. She said “I don’t think it’s okay to look down on anyone. Pop music is the most popular music and it will be playing a lot, so why would I go out of my way to not listen to it when it’s all around me?”. Kailee Rasmussen, a junior, said that she listens to many different types of music and does not look down in other people’s opinions as long as they are not hurting anyone. Christian Ponce, another junior at our school, said that he also listens to a variety of music. He commented that people today like to listen to what other people find “cool” and if a large amount of people gang up on a certain genre or band, then that is what will be seen as normal. I completely agree with that. Hate culture today has stretched to a ridiculous level. People seem to be unable to form their own opinions and when someone they look up to says that a band or genre is dumb, they look down on it as well without giving the music a chance. I do not think that everyone needs to like every single type of music. If you genuinely do not like a certain band, you do not have to listen to it. I have a problem with people who think it is okay to hate bands just because too many people listen to them, and then shame other people for listening to them. As Gigi said, popular music is called popular for a reason. There is many different sounds to the genre, and there is nothing wrong with listening to it. The idea that a band being popular automatically makes it bad music is ridiculous and close minded. It is also ridiculous to think that you are better than someone else just because the bands you listen to are “underground” or “indie”. In my opinion, it does not take any special skill to be able to find an underground band and listen to their music. Anyone can do that. People listen to whatever makes them happy, and if indie music does not make them happy, then they do not need to listen to it and there is nothing wrong with that, just like how there is nothing wrong with people that do not like pop music. I am not even asking for people to give pop music a chance. All that I ask is that the next time you go to roll your eyes or scoff at someone for listening to a certain artist, you take a step back and think about why that would be the proper response to someone listening to something that brings them joy.

Pizza Cones: On Top or Flop? megan JONES

main editor

A new establishment in downtown Safety Harbor has caught the attention of high schoolers all around the area. Opened in May, Pizza Cones have become a popular spot for unique tasty treats. The idea for the cones came from Bulgaria when the owner Javier saw cones like ice cream, with steam. Let’s see how they stack up: Taste: The crust for the pizza cones is just like regular pizza, filled with cheese, sauce and various toppings. The pepperoni cone was delicious and cheesy. The cones might even taste better than some regular pizza. Time: There was about a ten minute wait for the cones, but once they were out of the oven

they were piping hot and ready to eat.. Atmosphere: The staff was incredibly nice and greeted you with a smile as soon as you walk in the door. They made jokes with customers and made the wait for the cones seem minimal. Price: The prices were relatively cheap, however they were more expensive than a regular slice of pizza deal. Overall, going to Pizza Cones is a fun thing to do with your friends. They are a little more difficult to eat than a piece of pizza, the cones are held in a paper holder, so lifting the cone of out the paper to take a bite can be tough. However, the experience is enjoyable. So if you are ever looking for a place to eat in downtown Safety Harbor, be sure to check out Pizza Cones. Countryside students winding down after school to try pizza cones for themselves at Pizza Cones on Main.

Veganism has been on the rise in food trends for quite a while, often we see people flaunting their organic quinoa salads or their dairy free ice creams all over social media stressing the absence of what most of us use everyday; animal products. So what is veganism exactly? Well, it’s when someone chooses not to consume or use any products derived from animals. That means no meat, no fish, eggs, dairy, leather or fur, Some may take it as far as not consuming honey. Why would anyone want to exclude themselves from what is most prominent in our country today? Well, According to a 2012 Gallup poll, two percent of the U.S population followed a vegan diet, This study found in mayclinic.com has also revealed that the number has now jumped to a whopping 3.5% in the year of 2017. While that may seem like a little climb from what was five years ago, it shows that roughly

7 million people in America alone follow a vegan diet, including celebrities like Ellen degeneres, Liam hemsworth, miley Cyrus and Jennifer Lopez. No wonder they stay so fit! Observational studies comparing vegans to the general population report that vegans may benefit from up to 75% lower risk of developing high blood pressure, also up to a 42% lower risk of dying from heart disease which is the number one cause of death in America. Going vegan has also shown signs of reversing type II diabetes, weight loss and has also improved high cholesterol levels found in many adults. “Hey, so like where do you get your protein?” While it is a common question people ask about veganism, nutritionists have found that lacking protein is not very common in their diet. Plant-based people rely on beans, nuts and seeds to get their protein, something that’s not really hard to get a hold of today. While the effects of the human body while

going vegan are all very clear, the benefits of the environment around us rely just beneath the surface. Ever notice how the earth is getting warmer and warmer? Due to greenhouse gases and global warming the earth is heating up one degree at a time. “Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32 Million tons of carbon dioxide per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions” (Cowspiracy.com) That’s more gases than the amount released from cars, trains and planes combined. Animal agriculture is driving our planet into a destructive direction resulting in the extinction of multiple species until our earth is no longer inhabitable. These Multiple studies have concluded that going vegan is one of the most environmentally efficient and beneficial things one can do for both the planet and themselves.

Be in the homecoming know amilCHAPPELL staff writer

Countryside High School’s annual homecoming is going to be what our fellow cougars call a “Lit” homecoming. With the traditional dancing and fun with friends, Countryside has another event in store for cougars attending. There will be games, activities and more. Countryside’s homecoming committee has decided on a few rules and announcements to inform our fellow cougars about the annual 2017 school year homecoming. Administrators and teachers will be attending to make sure students are not misbehaving in inappropriate ways. This year’s The King and Queen will be announced at the varsity homecoming football game on October 6th, 2017 during half time. The dance will follow the next night and begin at 7:00 p.m. and at 11:00 p.m. There will be NO ADMISSION after 9:00 p.m. The theme for homecoming is “all cougars howl at a neon moon” with neon colored decorations. Colors that mainly look best in blacklight are glow in the dark would be neon, and black and white. Pawprint wishes all fellow cougars attending homecoming a great time at the dance.

Homecoming on a budget rachelLEWIS

In high school, some people like to spend hundreds of dollars on homecoming. Other people do not see the point of spending that much on something you will probably only wear once. For the people on a budget, there is plenty of options! If you are trying to find a dress online, there are four websites that are known for having low price dresses that ship quickly. On the website promgirl.com, they have an under $50 section with dresses that go with the theme for this homecoming! For this year’s homecoming theme, it is recommended that outfits worn are black, white, or neon. On promgirl.com, there is a large selection of low priced neon dresses. The website simplydresses.com also has an under $50 section with many options to go along with the theme. The website savedbythedress.com, is based in Miami and known for shipping almost immediately. The website us.boohoo.com has have many option for the neon theme as well, but it is based in the UK so it will take a little bit longer to arrive. The best part about boohoo.com is that they have free shipping, and low priced dresses, so you will end up paying less than you would on most other websites! Some people prefer to try on dresses before purchasing them, and there is options for that in the Countryside Mall, all with dresses under $50! Stores in the mall like Forever 21, JC Penny, and Windsor all have in-store and online dresses that go along with the homecoming theme. Ross, located in the Clearwater Mall plaza across from Target, has an entire section dedicated to dresses that are fairly inexpensive. They also have a wide variety of styles so there is a high chance of finding something to go with the theme. If there is nothing at Ross, Target is in the same plaza and also has a section with low price dresses.

Many students this year have been wondering what is the plan for homecoming this week? Administration has decided to allow a three day homecoming week including a Relay for Life awareness day. Students must remain in modified dress code the entire week. Relay for Life day - dress in your best purple attire. Wildlife day - dress like your favorite animal. Let’s turn the school into a zoo. Tacky tourist day - take a tour through the halls of Countryside. Theme day - show that even cougars howl at a neon moon. Spirit day - show your Countryside pride in garnet and gold. These ideas are tentative, and have not been finalized at this time. Stay tuned for the official homecoming week schedule.

As football season kicks off, our Countryside Cougars are more than ready to make big moves this year. All 53 boys have been working extremely hard trying to revive our football program. There are practices being held everyday after school working on strength, agility, and perfecting all of their plays. The infamous Cougars are back and better this season. The team started the 2017 year by going head to head with the Alonso Ravens for pre-season. We came out victorious with a score of 56-27. This is good news, being that the Ravens have beat us in prior years. The surge of having a 29 point lead at the start of our season, spread a wave of school spirit and excitement for the Friday night lights once more. There are a lot of great players out on our field this year. Some stuck out during our pre-season game, who will be very valuable to the team. To start off, Derek Jenkins, our quarterback leading the offense, had “more than 200 total yards and six touchdowns.” (Tampa Bay Times, 2017). Another leading role of the night was taken by wide receiver, Cadre Mobley. Mobley brought in two touchdowns, one being 48-yard touchdown catch. Finally Ray Campbell, who is seen constantly running down the field gaining yards for the team as often as he can, assisting in making touchdowns as well. Overall, it seems as if we have everything in our favor. There are 53 outstanding boys giving their all, every chance they get, while staying very dedicated. Our coaches are very well trained and good at assisting the boys at practice and for instant feedback at the games. We all have a common goal and want our team to be the best. Make sure you’re out there on Friday nights to catch these unstoppable boys in action!

Shawn Mendes recently came to Amalie Arena for his world tour on July 25, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. Joining him was Charlie Puth, but to be honest they should have left him off the ticket. Charlie gave a lack-luster performance jamming out on a keyboard to elevator music. His best trait was his looks. His 30 minutes on stage had no design elements or show quality, but rather sounded like watching a singer at a piano bar. As for Mendes, he performed flawlessly. His vocals were great and his show was one to remember. He ran back and forth around the entire arena to go between two stages for a more up close and personal experience.

Kaepernick began sitting during the national anthem last preseason. According to sbnation. com, Kaepernick stated, “It is a silent protest to show support for people of color who are being oppressed in the United States.” Kaepernick has also said he sits to take a stand against police brutality here in the united states. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” said Kaepernick. Kaepernick was alone in his protests originally, but now he does not have to stand alone as many athletes are joining the crusade.
