The battle against cancer is a never ending fight graphic reproduced by permission of hope.org

micheleBUTTERFIELD pawparazzi editor

Other than skin, breast is the most infamous of all cancers. The American Cancer Society has estimated that 252,710 women in the United States will acquire an invasive form of breast cancer in 2017. During the month of October, people around the world gather to give support and hope to ones who are still fighting and pay tribute to the people who have been taken from us too soon. Throughout this month, hundreds of organizations host events such as ‘Making a Stride Against Breast Cancer’ walk presented by the Seminole Hard Rock hotel & Casino. This event took place Saturday October 28, 2017 at the Amalie Arena and surrounding areas. Following this walk came the ‘Support Our Girls: Knock out Breast Cancer 5k and 10k’ charitable fundraiser which occurred on October 1st in Orlando. (cont. After money raised stats are in). For students at Countryside we have all known someone with a specific cancer diagnosis whether it is breast cancer or any other type of cancer, they all deserve the same recognition for what they are going or have been through. It is out of respect that we give recognition to the long battle won for Margaret Trautwein for beating breast cancer, Joyce Dimmer for defeating breast cancer, Scott Hernon in the fight against throat cancer , Sue Reitmyer in overcoming brain cancer, Anita Steeres defeating breast cancer and Lori Bawkins defeating breast cancer.

What are the cool cougars wearing this season? dylanSTEVENS It’s finally getting to that small amount of cold weather we have for about a month and, what better way to spend it then looking fly and staying warm through Florida’s harsh winter? Typically, the first thing to come out of the closet once it gets cooler, are the oversized warm jackets and sweaters. This is a trendy style for

teenagers who want to look cute but stay comfortable. For the girls, an oversized sweater paired with a colored bralette adds a pop of color and maintains the comfort of the outfit. Next, comes the boots that accompany the sweaters. Suede chelsea boots and of course Doc Martens usally make an appearance for comfort along with style. When longer socks are added, your feet are kept warmer during the day.

Finally, darker colors and funky patterns. Dark colors are brought out in relation to the darker colors typically associated with winter time. Warm browns tones along with coole blue tones are the perfect winter clothing colors. Then there are fun patterns which can go on dresses, sweaters, or scarves. This is a way to add an accent to your outfit, while still trying to keep warm.

College application advice liaDEALVAREZ

business manager

College Applications can be extremely stressful and put immense pressure on 12th grade students. Some may say that completing a single application is equivalent to a part time job. Most application deadlines fall in between the months of October and January with the exception of a few schools and programs. Students applying for Financial Aid must get the paperwork done by the individual schools deadlines as well. Here are some tips and tricks to tackling the monster also known as The College Application before it is too late:

1. Start by creating a list of colleges you are planning on applying to, including a back-up school to be safe. 2. Use online websites such as www. commonapp.org and www.coalitionforcollegeaccess.org to complete applications for many different schools on one easy to use website. 3. Make a schedule in a safe place to keep track of deadlines. This will help to prevent missing anything crucial to getting accepted. Create sections for the actual application deadline, transcript deadline, financial aid and decision dates. 4. Look on each college’s official website under the section “undergraduate

admission” to see if the specific school requires an interview or anything extra to improve the chances of getting accepted. 5. Fill out transcript request forms in a timely manner, do not wait for the last second. 6. Schools such as out-of-state and private universities require transcripts to be sent through the mail rather than online. Be sure to specify on the form that an official stamped copy will be needed. 7. Ask a teacher or guidance counselor a few weeks before applications are due to write the recommendation letters, so that they have plenty of time to complete them.

Flint, Michigan still does not have clean water katie GOSS staff writer

Flint, Michigan is a city that has been on the news for the last couple of years, but not for any of the right reasons. The city used to receive its water from the Detroit city system until it was switched illegally to the Flint River on April 25, 2014. City and State officials knowingly did not treat the water before switching the residents source there, resulting in the lead from the old pipes leaking out into the dirty water. Residents became worried when their tap water turned a dark color and tasted badly. In some cases, residents of the town experienced hair loss or skin rashes from the water. When the citizens of Flint told city and state officials of the incident, they were dismissive of it almost as if they did not deserve the basic necessity of water that everyone needs to live. Officials did not start paying attention to the enraged residents until they gained the country’s attention, who backed them up and wondered why nothing had been attempted to help them yet. When asked why they had switched the water in the first place, officials told everyone it was to save a few dollars in the city, but obviously it was at the price of the residents health. It was not until March of 2017, three years after the incident took place, that Flint was promised from the state of Michigan new pipes to carry the water from the river to their houses, and to have a lead monitoring system at the river. Another place that has been more recently in the news for some of the same reasons is

Puerto Rico. Though they were not affected by cost a lot of money should not have been thrown lead water, they were pummeled by the two storms, and citizens became enraged at the government’s treatment towards them, much like Flint. The Island was hit by the category 4 hurricane Maria, right after getting hit with parts of Irma which had been a category 4 at the time. Sit or kneel national debate

logan SCHNEITER

staff writer

Roughly a year ago, then Quarterback of the 49ers, Colin Kaepernick, took a knee during the national anthem to protest the social injustices happening in the country. Since then, several other players have joined in, even extending the world of football. It has created a movement of unspoken segregation, splitting the country into three prominent groups. Those who choose to sit or raise a fist, to fight against social injustice in

current day society. Next is those who discard any type of protest to the national flag and classify protesters do as unpatriotic. Finally you have the third group who choses to stay undecided or rather avoids the conflict. The most frustrating part of the social conflicts being argued is that they have existed for several years, which occur with some positive results, yet inevitably reverting back to it’s infamous state as the parasite that diseases American society. As a matter of fact the first recorded occurrence of an athlete protesting social injustices can be traced back to 1968, where two black racers Tommie Smith and John Carlos were stripped of their olympic medals for raising their fists on the podium during the award ceremony. Despite the racers lack of medals, they would go on to become civil rights royalty. They created a movement that is still being used to this day. Honestly, there is nothing more

American than fighting against the inequality and fair treatment of all people and those two racers should be remembered as American heros and nothing less. Now to the case of those who believe those who take a knee during the national anthem, are “offending” the founding fathers, there are a few things they may want to know. Originally when the United States were being founded, there was no national anthem. That wouldn’t come until the war of 1812 when, the US had a massive battle with the British. On the other hand if Americans really wanted to be “patriotic” they would sport the Bellamy salute through the national anthem, the way kids were taught to listen to the national anthem at one point in history. In conclusion, it doesn’t matter if you sit or stand during the anthem, because America will always find a way to revert to it’s segregated routes. However, Americans should still be encouraged to stand up for what they believe. If someone could conjure up enough supporters there may one day be a revolution.

“We were just human beings who saw a need to bring attention to the inequality in our country” -Tommie Smith

The savory snack is doused in liquid nitrogen for a solid two minutes leaving you with extremely cold cheese puffs that look like they are covered in smoke. I spoke with Vivienne, an employee and asked what was her favorite part about working at Sno Bistro. “The best part about working here is making the ice cream, Handling liquid nitrogen is such a great thing to experience and seeing the fresh cream turn solid and really take form right before your eyes, it’s kinda magical.” Vivienne said. Atmosphere wise, the store could have used a little work. The store is quite small and relatively quaint for its size. Their primary colors used for decorating are red and yellow. It really would have stood out more if it had a less basic design

with maybe a statement piece that would separate the store from the usual cookie-cutter style seen with most other stores. What I liked most was watching the employees pour the liquid nitrogen all over the ice cream mixer, they were not kidding when they said they used a lot! If you still don’t know what to get when you arrive Vivienne has a few suggestions. “The bubble waffle is my favorite menu item, it’s a great addition to the ice cream and it looks wonderful.” Vivienne said. Overall, this spot is the perfect place for delicious Instagram worthy desserts and snacks you can’t find just anywhere. Whether it’s your friends or fami l y you’ll find something cool for anyone at Sno Bistro!

Ready, set, Relay!

Relay for Life is a nationwide fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. There are 5,000 communities who participate in this year long fundraising and our school is one of them! There are over 3 million participants worldwide and you could join today. Countryside’s school Relay event will be March 9, 2018. Coming to the Relay events and raising money helps the American Cancer Society make a global impact on cancer research. These events are anywhere from 6 to 24 hours long. At the Countryside Relay, every student participant who raises over $100 is eligible to stay the night. All the participants who stay overnight do not sleep, they are also asked to have a team member walking the track at all times. This signifies the fight of cancer, and how it never sleeps so for one night, neither do the ‘Relayers’. There are multiple teams that set up tents every year, decorated according to their team’s theme. This year the theme of our Relay for Life is “Tuning out cancer”. At the booths, teams continue to fundraise by selling food, collecting donations, and having games. Throughout the night there will be games held every hour, as well as their various activities, track walking, and the infamous Luminaria ceremony. The Luminaria ceremony is held after the sun goes down and all of the luminary bags around the field are lit. The bags are lit to remember cancer survivors, and those we have lost, and to show cancer patients that they are not alone - symbolising the light and hope in their dark times. Overall, Relay for Life is a very impactful organization to join. All year long this club works on new types of ways to raise money to help impact the nation in one common goal, to find a cure for cancer. Join the fight today!

Stay gold with The Outsiders rachelLEWIS

features editor Countryside’s Troupe 900 performed The Outsiders from October 26-28! This is one of the first shows our school has done that has a majority male cast. According to the Countryside Drama website, “Our latest Production, based off the best-selling book, follows the events witnessed by a young gang member. After almost being drowned by a rival group, he must leave town with his friend to escape the police after being forced to kill one of his attackers. This classic story will have you on the edge of your seat!” Troupe 900 always works incredibly hard on their shows and spends long hours rehearsing, so it would be a shame to miss out on this production. A senior at our school, Arianna Ryan, is the stage manager for The Outsiders. Her daily schedule consists of making sure everyone in the cast is taken care of and present, taking notes on the blocking, planning the schedules for rehearsal, calling the cues for the technicians in the show, and making sure every action that needs to happen takes place. She loves the cast and the show and thinks that it is very educational. Arianna thinks that students at Countryside should see the show because it is relatable to high schoolers and altogether has a good story. Kailee Rasmussen, a junior, is the sound technician for the show. Kailee has been a huge part of tech since she started doing it. Along with contributing to sound, Kailee has also done costuming, and always does what she can to help others. Though she does not consider herself an actor, she feels like she truly belongs in the theater and is glad she can express her passion through the technical side. Christian Ponce, a junior at our school, plays the understudy for Two Bit. When asked about his experience in the show, he said “Being a part of The Outsiders has been great. It’s fun having to challenge myself.” Christian is having to read his lines with an accent while maintaining his persona as a jokester which is difficult, but he enjoys it. Tyler Chlopecki, another junior at our school, read the book and saw the movie before auditioning and identified with the character of Bob. He played the king in Troupe 900’s production of “The King and I” last spring and is enjoying playing a bad guy versus his usual characters. James Kelly, a senior, played Darry, who is Ponyboy’s older brother. He read the book in middle school and enjoyed the elements of struggle that it represented. Despite experiencing a setback in rehearsals due to hurricane Irma, James said that everyone was able to jump back into things quickly and get on schedule. He also said that this show is a good mix of underclassmen and upperclassmen, and it is nice to see some upperclassmen taking the younger cast under their wing. Anyone who attended the production saw that the troupe’s hard work definitely paid off!

Star basketball player, Carlos Williams, is looking forward to a great deal of things to come his last year of high school, and going to college. Carlos has been offered athletic scholarships by FSU, Stanford, and Pittsburg, and he has many things coming his way as he continues his basketball career throughout high school and college. “C.J., as he is known, is like my son. He is extremely talented and I hope to see his name in big lights one day,” said Mrs. Trautwein. Countryside high school faculty is very proud of him and he has formed good relationships with many teachers. Carlos has made many athletic contributions to Countryside High School that will not go unnoticed. Maintaining his studies and making sure he keeps up with basketball shows just how committed he really is. “He is squared away. He has further goals than just basketball and he came to me early in the year because of home issues and I did what I could to help. He has realized how important it is to stay in school and do well.” Says Officer Comini. Carlos has had to overcome some obstacles, with the death of a few of his loved ones the first three years of high school. This made it difficult for him to get through each day at one point.

“Freshman year, my aunt passed away, sophomore more year, my uncle passed away, and junior year my great grandma passed away. So, those three years were tough but it helped me to become who I am today so it had to happen I guess.” Said Carlos. This did not get in the way of anything. He still continued to play great and he has been a great student, friend, and mentor to many people even through the hard times. “He has a great mentality about school and sports and is a very positive person when it comes to a bad game. He is also a great mentor when it comes to helping people out with basketball.” Said senior, Zena Elias.Tryouts for varsity are coming up and Carlos is looking forward to competing with his team this year and going to state regionals, hoping to win a ring. Carlos’s advice to future players and students, “Surround yourself by people who want something positive out of life and who want to see you succeed in life. Be who you are, do what you have to do, and be humble.” Graduating in the year of 2018, his attributions to Countryside will not go unnoticed. Carlos is a prime example of success and ambition, and pawprint hopes to see him do great throughout the rest of his basketball career and life.

Every year, near the month of October, theme parks such as Busch Gardens, Universal and Disney get into the Halloween spirit. They will change the whole theme park for the night. Disney has done Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party for young children who would not be able to handle the terrifying horrors of Busch Gardens’ Howl-o-scream or Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights. Howl-O-Scream started selling their tickets on September 22nd until October 29th for $39.99 but for groups of 15 plus, the tickets are $34.99. This year Busch Gardens is introducing two new haunted houses, Demented Dimensions and

Undead Area; adding onto their other five haunted houses, The Black Spot, Zombie Containment Unit 15, Death Water Bayou, Unearthed, and Hotel Hell. Three new scare zones had also been added to the Halloween themed map: Carnie Camp, New Class Deceased, and Meat Market. Imagine riding a roller coater with some spooky monsters. Now you can on Cobra’s Curse, SheiKra, Cheetah Chase, Falcon’s Fury, Kumba and Montu are the thrill rides for this year. Two shows are being apart of the agenda; One is the Fiend Show, where a dance break with the a mad scientist and their nurses at the Stanleyville theater. A mind blowing show will reveal your mind to yourself; Joshua Seth, a mentalist and psychology illusionist, has his own show called

Inside Your Mind and will be shown at the Dragon Fire Grill. “The Black Spot was the scariest because there were these crazy pirates jumping out you and there was a trail to get to the house and it was very dark. It was fun-scary because there were people on stilts and such,” Senior, Lexi Roy said. “My favorite part of Howl-O-Scream was the scare zones because you never know when someone’s gonna pop out and scar you,” Sophomore, Kathrine Roan said. Busch Garden’s transformation to the spooky Halloween theme, is scary but not in a completely terrifying way. The park had accomplished the scary, joy filled effect.

Justice League is a superhero flick which will show five super heroes teaming up to fight cinematic newcomer Steppenwolf. The DCEU is, so far, notorious for high revenue and relatively poor reviews (with Wonder Woman as an exception). Halfway through filming, director Zac Snyder had to depart the film and relinquished the position to Josh Whedon under the helm of director. Justice League will

be the 5th movie in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), and opens on November 17th , 2017. Thor Ragnarok is the third and final movie in the Thor franchise, which kicked off in 2011 with the release of ‘Thor’. The movie will feature Thor, the god of thunder (Chris Hemsworth), the incredible hulk, a giant green monster (depicted by Mark Ruffalo), Loki, brother and sometime rival of Thor (portrayed by Tom Hiddleson), and Valkyrie, an Asgardian warrior (Tessa Thompson) in their face off against Hela, the goddess of death. The film

will appear in theaters on November 2, 2017. Murder on the Orient Express on November 10th will be the third time in cinematic history that the classic story written by Agatha Christie comes to the silver screen. As a matter of fact, the original version won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Ingrid Bergman). The story is a murder mystery that finds passengers aboard the Orient Express being murdered one by one, and the passengers hurry to find the killer before he or she strikes again.

New adventure in a new country Students come to Countryside from all over the world

lailaCHARID staff writer

This new school year has brought new students from all over, including two exchange students both from Europe. Enric Garcia Bel who is from Barcelona, Spain and Annika Vainiotalo who is from Finland now attend Countryside High for their junior years through exchange programs. Annika came here through AFS (American field service) and Enric went through a program named Rotary youth exchange. Both programs offer any qualifying student the choice of studying abroad in countries such as, Italy, France, Egypt, Japan, Kenya and much more. To get into the foreign exchange program, students have to take extensive classes and pass a test regarding american studies and culture. Enric joined the program and came to America to learn the language and shape his future. “Going to America has always been a dream of mine. It’s a lot of fun to attend school here and learn more about the culture. It is definitely a lot more freeing here, In Spain we have a lot more rules when it comes to school” said Enric However, the journey here was not easy. Enric had to say goodbye to his family back in Barcelona and leave all of his friends behind with only the long plane ride and a host family awaiting him. When you have a host family, life is totally different, you’re living with strangers that basically house you during your trip. “I really like my host parents. They’re amazing and really laid back, but I really miss my family. They were really proud of me when they found out I got into the exchange program.” Annika said. Both students are staying for one academic year, during this year they’ll live with their host families and continue to attend countryside until their next year. “I want to stay in America for college, hopefully get some scholarships for swimming and attend a university, that’s the plan.” And while these students are experiencing the same curriculum and classes as we are, thay are still adjusting to this new lifestyle. “School in Finland is very different, Yes it’s a lot more freeing because you can do your schedules and classes by yourself and you don’t need passes throughout the halls and there’s no bells throughout the day but our exams and tests are a lot harder in my opinion.” Annika said Here at countryside Annika enjoys gym and math as her favorite core class. “ I love gym because it’s like a little break in the day you just get to be free for a little bit and be active, i also like math, i’m really good at it and the teachers are very helpful and I like that they’re involved with their students.” Annika said. Enric really enjoys the fun activities offered at Countryside, with him being on the swim team and involved in clubs like multicultural he gets a full idea on what we pride ourselves on in our school such as unity and determination “My favorite part so far has been spirit week, I think it’s cool that one day you can just come to school all dressed up, it’s honestly a lot of fun, we don’t have that in Spain.” said Enric Going to school in a different continent has given Annika and Enric a different experience overall from european curriculum and academia. And while they have been away from home for a little while they have made great friends and memories to last a lifetime.
