a space to be - Pop-Up Exhibition Catalog

Page 1

Welcome to our first pop-up exhibition of 2023, a space to be. A pop-up show is a temporary art event—the chance for CAE to allow groups of artists to drive the look and feel of a show. When we opened the call for proposals, a space to be was the first to “pop-up” in my inbox. However, this wasn’t just a pop-up; this was a fully conceived exhibition put together by three powerhouse female artists.

Liz Lautrup, Jessica Loving, and Jenny Wilson, are each beautiful artists and people in their own right. They are funny, and kind, and thoughtful to all. I have heard the words “thank you” more in the last three days than I have in the last three months. To be in their presence makes you feel grateful. This spirit radiates in each woman’s art. A sense of calm, of balance, and of purpose. The artists discovered one another because they each showed their work at Sync Gallery in Denver. Although their work has hung in the same space at the same time, this pop-up is the first time the three have shown their work together.

a space to be offers you a respite from our crazy world. This week, we’ve navigated news from Lansing, MI, news from Ukraine and Turkey, and a snowstorm in our own Colorado towns. Perhaps you’ve faced your own frenzy or challenges this week. a space to be is simply that: a colorful, contemplative exhibition that provides viewers with a space to breathe, to release, and to just…Be.

It has been my honor to work alongside Liz, Jessica, and Jenny this week. Thank you to our generous sponsors, SCFD (the Scientific Cultural Facilities District) and Colorado Creative Industries, and to all of you for making exhibitions like this possible.

With Gratitude,

a space to be

Three established Colorado-based painters — Liz Lautrup, Jenny Wilson, and Jessica Loving — collaborate in a show about creating a spacious moment of quietude, a sense of shelter borne out of the practice of making the work as well as time spent experiencing them. These three artists create work from a place of letting those anxieties down, if only for a moment, and will create simply a space to be.

Jenny Wilson’s representational work is steeped in the desire to create something beautiful and serene that will resonate with the viewer. She works in acrylic, carefully applying glazes to create an illuminated sense of atmosphere. Her landscape paintings become layered stories that have multiple interpretations.

Liz Lautrup’s abstract work depicts how we all flow along, individually, yet joined in the tumult — among and within the waves and waters of our home, Earth. To express this flow, she uses collaged painted papers with a textural overlay of cold wax and oil paint.

Jessica Loving’s color field paintings involve layering rich colors and textures to create a complex, shifting surface that responds to the surrounding light. Her work creates a non-representational environment to enable viewers to further explore a memory or feeling tied to a specific hue — a simple meditation on color wholly accessible and unique to each person.

The three artists weave in an elemental alignment within their work — Jenny plays with an earthen integration, Liz weaves in a watery dimensionality, and Jessica’s work encapsulates that of ether. All the work is brought together to create a personal sanctuary; a space that offers all access to a nurturing moment of silence and quiet reflection. By centering one’s practice around cultivating peaceful moments outside of the storm, we are able to better adapt and find balance while the tempestuous wind rolls on. Through an interactive releasing ceremony, viewers can anonymously participate by writing down something they would like to ‘release’ - feelings, traumas, events, etc. Burning these papers during an outdoor ceremony will be our act of community healing, and our ability to grow in peace.

LIZ LAUTRUP

Liz Lautrup is an abstract artist who has been obsessed with beauty, nature, people and creating since she was a young child, growing up among the tall oak forests and waters of Northern New Jersey. There, she made ‘mud pots’, and stick creations, and studied painting with famous landscape painter John Osborne. She then went on to study Psychology and Studio Art at Hamilton College in New York State, and Landscape Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Pennsylvania. Striving to meld her many passions, she pursued diverse careers in her new home of Denver, Colorado, while constantly taking art classes. Leaving the corporate world in 2002 after having her second baby, she shifted her focus to creating expressive, expansive, abstract paintings, borne of deep personal need. A year later, the opportunity arose for her first small show, which was a success, and the call to keep growing and creating as an artist was loud and clear. It has given her a sense of freedom and non-attachment, that feeds her soul completely.

Liz’s work is a melding of meaning and beauty as she strives to create something unlike anything created before. Her most recent paintings combine hand-painted and collaged papers with overlain layers of cold wax and oil applied in flowing waves, showing a way to navigate the chaotic and transitional time we live in, and find a calm place within it. Liz has been a proud member of EDGE and SYNC Galleries in Denver, Colorado, and has found herself, in the last nine years, exhibiting in numerous shows, and delivering many sold and commissioned paintings across the United States. When she is not creating abstract paintings, she is working with individuals to co-create bespoke Soul Reflector artwork for personal growth. With her two children now grown, she creates and loves life in Golden, Colorado with her husband and studio doggie, Pogo.

JESSICA LOVING

Jessica Loving grew up in the once sleepy mountain town of Conifer, Colorado. She spent much of her childhood being fortunate enough to experience extensive international travel with her family. This gift of ultimately, wanderlust, thoroughly enriched her being. Before the age of 20, she had already visited over 30 countries and seven continents. Jessica studied Fine Art at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, from which she graduated in 2005. After moving back to Denver in 2006, she immediately became active within the art scene. She is a co-founder of Sync Gallery. She helped run several Denver-based co-op galleries including NEXT Gallery, EDGE, Sync, and Core New Art Space. Currently, her work is represented by galleries in Texas and Colorado. Her largescale mixed media paintings are part of collections worldwide — private and corporate. Several of her works are showcased in high-end resorts, hotels, and spas around the US. Jessica is the co-founder of the full-service marketing boutique, (in)spiregraphics. Jessica is also the co-founder of Artboss, a communications and branding agency for artists. When she is not busy in the studio, she can be found hiking, snowboarding, backpacking, kayaking, or embarking upon some sort of fantastic outdoor adventure with her husband, daughter, and twin sons.

JENNY WILSON

Jenny finds the greatest artistic inspiration from exploring the mysteries of nature and how they relate to the human spirit. Her paintings are conceptualized in her mind and then applied to paper or canvas. Making art is a meditative process, steeped in the desire to create something beautiful and serene that will resonate with the viewer. She works in acrylic, carefully applying layers to create an illuminated sense of atmosphere. As Jenny muses, “My landscape paintings become layered stories that have multiple interpretations. My art is motivated by desires many of us share: to connect with something greater in this universe; to find peace and serenity.” Jenny Wilson is a fine artist living and working in Denver, Colorado. She and her husband, two daughters, and their two chows spend their time enjoying music, art, and Colorado’s amazing outdoors. As a Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate of Denver’s Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, Wilson has shown widely in the region, at juried shows, galleries, and invitational exhibits. She has studied with master artists and has taught many workshops and classes.
