Chapter One Working Dogs German Shepherds are very hard working dogs. They work with police and sniff things that are not supposed to be on the ground. They work with police because they are very smart and they are the 2nd most popular dog breed in the United States. They are from Germany because they are called German Shepherds. They also help in wars. An officer named Max Emil Frederick von Stephanitz suggested German Shepherds helping in wars. The soldiers laughed at his suggestion. The German Shepherds performed very well though. They delivered letters to soldiers. German Shepherds also are SeeingEye Dogs. They guide blind people around. You probably know that dogs are not allowed in stores or places like that. SeeingEye Dogs ARE allowed in those places. If they were not allowed, how else would the blind people be able to look for the stuff they want? SeeingEye Dogs, of course.

When she was trying to give it to him, he did not understand what she was doing until he felt his wallet. This breed is very important. Not just humans do work, dogs also do. Rin Tin Tin was a very famous German Shepherd. Of course, he had to do LOTS of work. He was all around the world, he worked in armies by delivering letters to soldiers. There are so many German Shepherds and all of them did work, just like you do.

Buddy’s name used to be Kiss but Morris did not like that name so he named her Buddy. Buddy followed commands like left, and right. When Buddy died, Morris was so sad that he got another German Shepherd named Buddy II. Then he got 4 more dogs and named them all Buddy. Another famous German Shepherd named Daisy was very hard working. She is also very famous. She saved her owner’s son, David, in a busy intersection. He was 3 years old. That was probably hard! But sadly, Daisy died a few years ago. But she is probably rememberedespecially by David!

The WORLD’S most famous German Shepherd is in this book. His name is Rin Tin Tin. He was born in France in 1918. He was so special that he wore a diamond collar! He was in 25 films. He had a mother and some 5 day old siblings. In 1922 he showed his talent. He jumped 2 feet and 3 meters. How amazing! There is also a famous German Shepherd named Hustler. When he was 3 years old, he saved his owner Debbie Inions. She fell off her horse and her horse left her injured and she could not move. Also, she fought 2 coyotes for 9 hours! She was probably very injured! Then Hustler saved her. There is another famous German Shepherd named Thunder. When someone fell under the ice, he yelled ‘’pull!” and Thunder pulled him out of the ice. The amazing part about this is that Thunder had never been trained to use the command “pull.” Bruno is a famous German Shepherd that saved an 11 year old’s life. Donnie Skiffington fell off his bike into a ditch and he was bleeding really badly. Then Bruno saved him.

Timmy is a German Shepherd that was 4 years old and he saved his owner Anne Nemes from being robbed at a gunpoint by a couple men. Timmy gripped at one of the man’s arms. Orient was also a German Shepherd. He was a SeeingEye dog and after the SeeingEye program, he lived with Bill Irwin. Bill was blind so Orient guided him. He went super far! Chapter Three Puppies When German Shepherd puppies are born, their ears are flopped down. Their ears begin to stand up as they grow older. When their ears are up, they can hear good. Usually, their mothers are more calm than they are. German Shepherd puppies know how to get milk right when they are born. They do not have to get taught. The easiest way to find a German Shepherd puppy is through a breeder. German Shepherd puppies are about the size of a clock in a classroom. If you were getting a German Shepherd as a pet, you would probably want to start out getting a puppy so it can live longer and it will already know how to work when it grows into an adult. German Shepherd puppies look almost like their parents but the big difference is their ears and their size. Their parents are about as big as a bike and the babies are tiny. After not a long time German Shepherd puppies have ears standing up just like their parents. After a few years they start to get bigger. German Shepherds get to take care of
9
themselves way before a few years. Sometimes German Shepherds get lots of babies that they need to look after. It would probably be way easier having about 1 or 2 German Shepherd puppies than to look after than 7 puppies. Another job German Shepherds need to do is look after all of their puppies. If they have 1 puppy, it is still very important to look after it. But once the puppy gets to take care of itself, the parents do not have to worry anymore. German Shepherds might not be as fluffy as soon as they are born but don’t worry! It takes a while!

Chapter Four Taking Care Of German Shepherds Taking care of German Shepherds may be difficult. They shed a lotmostly in the spring. You might want to groom them every day. You should also feed your German Shepherd every day. Because they are so active, you should give them lots of water each day. They also need lots of exercise. You should give them exercise 1 or 2 times a week. You might want to give it a walk or play with it in the yard. But if you are young, you should not give it so much exercise. You should spay or neuter it. If you wanted a German Shepherd puppy, start out buying one instead of starting with an adult. The reason you should spay or neuter your German Shepherd is really good. If you don’t spay or neuter it, it is terrible. They can get a disease and possibly die. If this is not the right dog breed for you, the same thing happens to all dog breeds. So you should definitely spay
11
or neuter whatever dog breed you get. That was a warning. German Shepherds live at least 10 or 15 years so you will maybe have your German Shepherd for a while. German Shepherds sometimes bark, just like most dogs. If it is barking at a squirrel or a bird, the animal the German Shepherd is barking at will most likely run or fly away and you’re German Shepherd it will maybe stop barking. If you’re German Shepherd keeps barking for attention, pay attention to it. Feed it, let it outside, pet it for a while, and do stuff like that. You may be allergic to German Shepherds because they aren’t hypoallergenic
12
Chapter Five Stuff you Should Know About Them There are stuff you really need to know about German Shepherds. You need to know what they look like so you can decide if you want to get one or not. You also need to know how much exercise and water they need. They do need lots of water. You need to know if they are fine to strangers and other dogs. You need to know what they are like to other German Shepherds or other dog breeds. You need to remember all of this if you have a German Shepherd. Well guess what? All of the information is in this chapter!
13
If you have a female German Shepherd and you do not spay or neuter it, it will have puppies. Maybe so much that you need to sell them to people. They can even die with a terrible disease if you do not spay or neuter it. That would mean you would be getting all the dog treats and everything for nothing.
14
But German Shepherds do get along with other dogs so if you want your dog and a German Shepherd, the German Shepherd will not be hyper to the other dog. Luckily, German Shepherds have hair instead of fur but they do shed. They have thick hair so it may be hard to brush your German Shepherd. If you’re German Shepherd has a wet nose, that means it is healthy. That is the same with every other dog breed. If you’re German Shepherd or any other dog breed has a dry nose, that means you need to take more care of it. Do not speak too loud to dogs, especially German Shepherds. They have pointed ears and they can hear 10 times more than humans can. Even to German Shepherd puppies it may be loud. Do not play with your German Shepherd way too much. It might make them too tired. But if you want your German Shepherd to sleep, take it for a long walk. German Shepherds react fine to their family. Even to little kids. But they are aggressive with strangers. They growl
15
and bark. You may need to train your German Shepherd to not be so aggressive. Ouch! German Shepherds bite more than any other dog breed! Be sure not to annoy or tease German Shepherds. You should try to train a German Shepherd after you get it because if you don’t, it will be hard to train them because they would be hiper. Lots of people love German Shepherds. They are active and loyal to families. There must be a reason why you should get one. Are German Shepherds the right breed for you?
