Marching On: Continuing the Tradition of Community Journalism
Behind the scenes and in the background
NORTH OMAHA, Neb. As we commemorate the anniversary of the March on Washington on August 28, we reflect on the collective power that drives our community forward. In the spirit of collaboration and shared purpose, this newspaper joins the ongoing tradition of elevating local voices, celebrating achievements and fostering meaningful dialogue. We wish to contribute to the rich landscape of local journalism, ensuring diverse voices are heard and stories told. The March on Washington stands as a testament to the impact of ordinary individuals—students, workers, families—who united to create one of the most powerful demonstrations in American history. While Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech is now celebrated as a defining moment, it’s notable that in the immediate aftermath, the speech wasn’t the central focus. The significance of the speech grew over time, while the day of the march emphasized the unprecedented unity and scale of the gathering. It was the people—the everyday contributors—who brought the vision of the march to life.
This newspaper emerges from a similar spirit of shared purpose and community. Our aim is not merely to report news but to provide a platform that reflects the hopes, stories, and experiences of Omaha and our local community. Much like the participants of the March on Washington, we believe in the strength and significance of every individual’s contribution, seeking to create a space where community voices are heard, stories shared, and aspirations celebrated.
Just as the March on Washington demonstrated the power of collective action, this newspaper reflects our community’s shared experiences. Through our stories and features, we offer insights and inspiration. We understand that you may not always share our views, and that’s why we invite you to engage with us. As we embark on this journey, join us in envisioning and shaping our community’s future together.

Why Local Newspapers Matter
Community Connection and Preservation in the Digital Age
In a digital era dominated by national headlines, local newspapers and niche publications like The New Horizon and The Primary remain vital, offering targeted, community-focused content that resonates deeply with their audiences. These publications ensure that important stories and voices are heard, preserving the fabric of our communities and enriching the media landscape.
In a media landscape dominated by national headlines and viral trends, the true heartbeat of American journalism lies in local newspapers and niche publications that serve specific communities. These newspapers are more than just news outlets; they are the threads that weave together the fabric of our communities, providing targeted, relevant information to audiences that may be overlooked by broader media. One such example is The New Horizon, a publication of the Eastern Nebraska Office of Aging. While it isn’t a traditional local paper, it plays a crucial role as a community newspaper by offering specialized content that resonates with older adults in the region. The New Horizon exemplifies how a niche publication can still serve as a community newspaper by focusing on the unique needs and interests of its readers. Historically, community newspapers have played a pivotal role in documenting and advancing social movements. From the pioneering days of Freedom’s Journal in 1827 to the influential impact of The Chicago Defender and The Pittsburgh Courier, these papers have been the platforms for voices like Ida B. Wells and W.E.B. Du Bois, elevating critical discussions that have shaped the course of history. Today, even in the digital age, niche publications continue this tradition by addressing the specific needs of their communities and ensuring that important stories and issues are brought to the forefront. In an era dominated by online platforms, some might argue that print newspapers, particularly niche publications, are becoming obsolete. The rise of digital media has dramatically changed how people consume news, with many turning to online sources for their information. Critics may point out that the convenience, immediacy, and interactivity of digital news platforms make them more appealing than traditional print media.
While digital media offers certain advantages, it doesn’t fully replace the value provided by print newspapers. Print publications offer something unique: the ability to disconnect from screens, engage deeply with content, and enjoy the tactile experience of holding a physical paper, especially those that are beautifully designed. This experience is particularly valued by those who may prefer print over digital formats. Print newspapers also serve as a trusted source of information, particularly in communities where digital literacy may be lower or where access to reliable Internet service is limited.
Niche newspapers, such as The Primary, a community newspaper available in both digital and print formats, play an essential role in preserving cultural narratives and amplifying the voices and concerns of everyday people. These publications don’t rely on wire services or syndicated content; instead, they offer unique, locally-focused stories, fresh perspectives, and new ideas. They aren’t afraid to step outside the box to make the reading experience enjoyable and the content memorable, engaging, and actionable.
As we navigate the complexities of modern media, it’s more important than ever to support and engage with community and niche newspapers. These publications not only keep their audiences informed but also ensure that the stories, issues, and voices of their communities are heard and preserved. By subscribing, contributing, and participating, you help ensure the survival of these vital publications, which continue to play a crucial role in our media landscape, communities, and the lives of people.

The Power Of One,
The real voyage of discovery, is not in having new landscapes, but it is in having new eyes.
YOU
As election cycles come and go, it’s crucial that voters reassess their decisions and demand higher standards from their elected representatives.
Stop being “led”
OMAHA, Neb. —OMAHA, Neb. —Communities face critical decisions every election cycle, decisions that shape their future. In communities such as North Omaha, it is essential for voters to reassess their decisions and hold their elected representatives to higher standards. The concept of leadership is frequently overemphasized, especially in minority communities, where the emphasis should be on
fostering partnerships rather than relying on self-appointed “leaders.” The distinction is crucial. North Omaha requires not a leader, but effective representation—representation that prioritizes the well-being of the entire community, rather than a select few. Most important, constituents must actively engage in this partnership. As a voter, you play a crucial role in shaping your community’s representation. If those ‘leading’ your community are not up to the task, how can you expect a positive return on your investment? This is a poignant reminder of the power of the ballot and the importance of your vote. The result of a community is the consequence of its own electoral decisions.
During this election cycle, voters were manipulated out of their right to select a legislator for District 11, highlighting the importance of participating in the primary. Despite one candidate securing the right to enter the general election by winning the primary, they subsequently dropped out, leaving voters without a true choice. This serves as a critical lesson for all of us to remain engaged and vigilant in our electoral process. With approx. 3,000 out of 20,000 registered voters participating, the 15% turnout underscores the need for greater voter involvement in Omaha’s District 11. Accountability extends beyond the ballot box. Continuous engagement—attending council meetings,
participating in local forums, and holding elected officials to their commitments—is essential. Representatives must know you’re participating beyond election day. Another approach is to cultivate quality representation within your community by encouraging residents to step up and become actively involved, volunteer, contribute, or even seek office. If you choose to sit back and be led, remember, you forfeit your right to complain when leadership fails to meet your needs. The link between effective representation and a thriving community is undeniable. Effective representatives ignite participation and cultivate an environment where
possibilities are transformed into meaningful realities. Conversely, poor leadership cripples a community, leaving many behind and causing the community to languish in frustration and hopelessness, searching for someone or something to blame. As communities nationwide face an array of challenges and opportunities, the message is clear: it’s imperative to elect representatives who aren’t just adequate, but exceptional—representatives who are genuinely willing to work within the community they are elected to serve, for the benefit of all, not just for themselves.

Can Non Profits Truly Drive Change?
OMAHA,
Neb. — Non-profit organizations often play a vital role in tackling social, economic, and environmental issues that are sometimes overlooked by government agencies and private sector entities. Their commitment to supporting communities through various programs is evident in the essential services they provide, their advocacy for marginalized groups, and their efforts to foster community engagement. However, concerns about the legitimacy and effectiveness of some non-profits are on the rise. Critics point out that certain organizations may lack transparency, efficiency, or accountability, raising questions about how well they utilize resources. There is also ongoing debate about the sustainability of their impact, with some suggesting that these organizations may exist primarily to benefit their leaders and close associates rather than the communities they claim to serve.
As a grantor, it is crucial to ensure that non-profits uphold high standards of transparency and accountability to maintain public trust and clearly demonstrate their impact. Non-profits should have robust mech-
anisms in place for measuring outcomes and showing the long-term benefits of their programs. It is also important to balance immediate support with initiatives that address root causes and promote sustainable development. Encouraging partnerships between non-profits, government agencies, and the private sector can enhance resource utilization and amplify impact. However, this requirement can be challenging for well-intentioned non-profits that may struggle to find ethical partners, potentially forcing them into less-than-ideal collaborations. Engaging community members in the planning and execution of programs is essential to ensure that initiatives are relevant and tailored to local needs. It’s important to demand evidence of impact from non-profits—by visiting sites, attending events, meeting the people involved, reviewing programs, and speaking directly with those they aim to assist. While non-profit organizations are indispensable in many ways, the ongoing debate underscores the need for continuous improvement and adaptation to ensure they can effectively drive lasting growth and positive change in the communities they serve.
Cabbage Patch Kids (1983): Perhaps the most famous toy craze, Cabbage Patch Kids dolls caused massive hysteria during the holiday season of 1983. Parents were so desperate to get their hands on one that stores were overwhelmed and incidents of physical altercations and store stampedes were reported. The dolls, which each had unique features and a birth certificate, became a nationwide obsession.
Tickle Me Elmo (1996): This plush toy, based on the Sesame Street character, was another major holiday sensation. Tickle Me Elmo, which laughed and shook when tickled, became so popular that stores couldn’t keep up with demand. The frenzy included instances of people trampling others, and the toy’s price skyrocketed in the secondary market.

Investing in Playthings
As interest in alternative investments rises, collectible toys are emerging as a surprisingly profitable venture. While traditional investments like stocks and real estate are often the focus, toys— especially those that are vintage or limited edition—have shown significant appreciation in value over time. This trend is gaining traction not just globally, but also here in Omaha, where local collectors and businesses are playing a key role. Over the past decade, the global market for collectible toys has experienced steady growth, with some items appreciating at a rate that outpaces traditional investments. You don’t need a lot of money to begin, Pez dispensers were originally $0.25, and are still available for only a couple of bucks. Part
of the fun in collective is the hunt for the treasure, look for items at local thrifts and even rummage sales. You just never know. Because toys become more rare over time, when searching collectible toys, or toys you believe have the potential to become collectible, don’t limit yourself to antique and vintage toys because all toys, started out new. In other words, some currently available toys, will become collectible, if they aren’t already. What’s popular today, whether it’s a limited-edition action figure, a trendy LEGO set, or a new line of Hot Wheels cars, could become tomorrow’s valuable. While antique and vintage toys aren’t always found in mint condition, that doesn’t necessarily take away from their value. But, if you’re buying newer toys, as an outlook to the future, savvy collectors know that preserving toys in mint condition and in original packaging, sometimes with proof of purchase and place, increases their potential value.
Tips for Aspiring Collectors
For those interested in starting their own collection, it’s advis-
able to begin with well-known brands like LEGO, Barbie and Hot Wheels, whether these toys are new on the shelves or classic editions. Attending local toy fairs, thrifts, antique stores and events, such as annual toy expos event, are good sources for finding unique items and meeting other collectors. Local collector groups or online forums can provide valuable insights and help keep you informed about market trends, including what’s currently in fashion that may become collectible. The world of collectible toys offers both cultural enrichment and financial potential. As interest in this niche market grows, toys can be more than just playthings— they can be a smart investment.
Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just starting out, there’s never been a better time to explore the value of both nostalgic treasures and today’s newest releases, enjoy the local hunt.
•In 2015, a man in England found a collection of mint-condition, still-packaged Star Wars action figures in his mother’s attic. The toys, which included rare models from the 1970s and 1980s, were sold at auction for more than $500,000.
•A woman in Wisconsin found a vintage Barbie doll from the early 1960s in her attic, which turned out to be a rare model in mint condition. The doll, still in its original box, fetched a hefty amount at auction.
•A man inherited his uncle’s collection of Hot Wheels cars, which included some of the rarest models from the 1960s and 1970s. After having them appraised, he discovered the collection was worth a fortune, with some individual cars valued at thousands of dollars each.

Side hustles have long been a part of the American economic landscape, offering individuals the opportunity to earn additional income outside their primary jobs. One of the most inspiring historical examples of entrepreneurial success is the story of Lillian Harris Dean, better known as Pig Feet Mary. Her legacy,
a rich history dating back centuries. The concept of a piggy bank originated from a type of clay called "pygg" in medieval England. People used this clay to make jars for storing coins, which eventually led to the creation of pig-shaped money boxes as a playful pun on the word "pygg." Over time, the piggy bank became a global
rooted in Harlem’s vibrant early 20th-century community, continues to resonate today, especially in cities like Omaha, where food vending trucks are the modern-day equivalent. Originally from the South, Dean moved to Harlem during the Great Migration with the skills and recipes that would make her famous. She earned the nickname “Pig Feet Mary” by selling pig feet, a Southern delicacy, from a simple pushcart, originally a baby carriage she purchased for $5, on the bustling streets of Harlem. Her food quickly became popular among the community, who craved the familiar flavors of their Southern roots. By reinvesting her earnings, Dean transitioned from a street vendor to owning a permanent food stand, significantly increasing her income, which she eventually invested in real estate. Dean’s story is a testament to the power of determination, strategic planning and in understanding one’s market.

Today, Omaha is witnessing a similar entrepreneurial spirit with the rise of food vending trucks. These mobile food establishments have become a common sight, especially at outdoor venues like The River Front.
Modern food truck operators in Omaha navigate a complex set of local ordinances and statewide regulations, much like Pig Feet Mary navigated the challenges of her time. Despite these challenges, food trucks have become a lucrative side hustle for many, mirroring the success Pig Feet Mary found in her day. The flexibility and the relatively low start-up costs help Mary succeed, but it was mostly the deep and direct connection she had to her Harlem community that made her business work. Today, it is those same things that make food trucks an attractive business opportunity. Whether serving tacos or classic comfort foods, these entrepreneurs tap into Omaha’s vibrant food culture and thriving outdoor event

The Intersection of Generational Wealth and Stability
Without a stable foundation, the pursuit of wealth can be undermined by everyday economic hardships.
Ensuring that basic necessities are met creates a foundation upon which future wealth can be built and sustained. It’s about creating an environment where families can thrive now, so they can build a legacy for the future.
Securing consistent income, maintaining a savings cushion and investing in education are good starting points. Local community programs and resources offering financial literacy, housing assistance and job training are essential tools that can help families begin to stabilize their present situation.

Starting with a low initial investment, she identified a high-demand product and strategically grew her business over time. Modern food truck operators in Omaha follow a similar path, turning their culinary passions into ventures that understand local tastes and leverage popular outdoor events and markets. The success of these food trucks, like Pig Feet Mary’s pushcart, underscores the importance of scalability, flexibility and community engagement in any successful side hustle. By starting small, reinvesting profit and focusing on customer satisfaction, today’s entrepreneurs can build businesses that not only provide financial rewards, but also contribute to the community’s cultural fabric.
Lillian Harris Dean, known as Pig Feet Mary, began her entrepreneurial journey with a modest initial investment of $5, which she used to purchase a baby carriage that she re-purposed as a pushcart for selling pig feet and other Southern delicacies. As her business grew in popularity, she accumulated enough capital to purchase property in Harlem and became substantially wealthy during her time.

For instance, a piggy bank can be divided into sections labeled "Save," "Spend," "Donate," and "Invest," helping children understand the different ways money can be used. This practical approach makes abstract financial concepts more tangible and easier for young minds to grasp. In today's digital age, traditional piggy banks are evolving. While the classic ceramic piggy bank remains a beloved tool, digital alternatives have emerged, offering a tech-savvy way to teach financial literacy. Apps like "PiggyBot" and "Bankaroo" allow children to manage virtual piggy banks, set savings goals, and even track their spending. These digital tools bring the age-old concept of the piggy bank into the modern world, adapting to the needs and preferences of today's children.

Avatars: Small Business Game-Changer
The new digital landscape presents small businesses with numerous opportunities to stand out and connect with their customers in innovative ways. For mom-and-pop shops, internet-based businesses, and social media ventures, competing with larger brands can often seem daunting, particularly when resources are limited. However, one tool that is proving to be a game-changer in leveling the playing field is avatars. Avatars, or digital personas that represent a brand or individual online, are not just for big corporations or tech-savvy companies. They offer small businesses a unique and effective method to engage with their audience, build a strong brand identity, and enhance their social media presence.
One of the most impactful ways small businesses can use avatars is by integrating them into their social media strategies:
Interactive Posts: Avatars can be used to create engaging social media content that captures attention. Picture an avatar hosting short videos that introduce new products, share behind-the-scenes stories, or offer useful tips related to your business. This approach adds a personal touch and makes your content more relatable, entertaining, and engaging for your audience.
Storytelling: Every small business has a story to tell. Avatars can help narrate these stories, whether it’s the journey of how your business started, the values you stand by, or the milestones you’ve reached. By humanizing your brand, avatars help build an emotional connection with your audience, increasing the likelihood that they will support your business.
Live Q&A Sessions: Social media thrives on interaction, and avatars can elevate this experience. Hosting live Q&A sessions with your avatar allows customers to ask questions and receive real-time answers in an enjoyable, engaging format. This can be especially useful during product launches, special promotions, or simply for strengthening connections with your community.
One of the biggest advantages of using avatars is their cost-effectiveness, particularly for small businesses with limited resources. Creating an avatar doesn’t require a substantial budget, and maintaining it is straightforward. Many tools and platforms offer affordable options for creating and customizing avatars, making them accessible to businesses of all sizes.
Whether you opt for a simple animated character or a more sophisticated, human-like avatar, the investment is minimal and provides a worthwhile return compared to traditional marketing strategies.
Once your avatar is integrated into your social media strategy, it can consistently represent your brand, engage with your audience, and even provide customer support. This powerful tool is helping small businesses not only keep up with but also stand out from larger competitors in the digital landscape.

Celebrate National Coffee Day
Celebrate National Coffee Day by exploring the rich history and global journey of coffee, a beloved beverage that connects cultures and fuels our daily lives by Calandra Cooper
The Brew That Powers The World
As the aroma of freshly brewed coffee fills the air on September 29th, we celebrate National Coffee Day—a day dedicated to the beverage that fuels our mornings and energizes our afternoons. Coffee, cherished by millions worldwide, is more than just a drink; it’s a cultural staple with a deep history and a significant impact on the global economy. The story of coffee is said to begin in the lush, mountainous regions of Ethiopia. Legend has it that a goat herder named Kaldi discovered the coffee plant after noticing his goats becoming unusually energetic after eating red berries from a particular tree. Kaldi shared his discovery with a local monastery, where the monks brewed the first cup of coffee. They found that it helped them stay awake during
long hours of prayer. From Ethiopia, coffee traveled to Yemen, where it was cultivated and became a popular drink throughout the Islamic world. By the 15th century, coffee had spread across the Middle East, Persia, and North Africa. It wasn’t long before it reached the bustling ports of Europe, where it quickly gained popularity.
Coffee houses began appearing in cities like London, Paris, and Vienna, serving as hubs of social activity, intellectual discussion, and enjoyment of this invigorating beverage. Today, Brazil stands as the largest producer of coffee globally, contributing about one-third of the world’s supply. The country’s vast coffee plantations, some with over 100,000 trees, reflect the industry’s scale and significance. Brazil’s rich, fertile soil

This increase in state funding "is helping us to really make the project come to fruition," Weiss remarked. "Obviously, we’ve already started construction on it, but it’s really getting us closer to the finish line to securing the final funding for the project."
The Tenaska Center's establishment follows a series of enhancements and expansions by Omaha Performing Arts, which continues to draw over 550,000 visitors annually to its existing venues. With the completion of the Tenaska Center, Omaha Performing Arts expects to extend its reach and impact, offering more than 100,000 students, teachers and community members access to top-tier performing arts education and engagement programs each year.

Project REC: A Pioneering Youth Initiative at Offutt Air Force Base
In the summer of 1969, Offutt Air Force Base participated in an innovative program known as Project Recreation, Employment and Counseling (REC).
This initiative engaged 2,700 youth from the north side of Omaha by integrating them with job training, employment opportunities and recreational activities over a crucial 10-week summer period at Offutt Air Force Base.
A cooperative endeavor between Offutt Air Force Base, the City of Omaha, Greater Omaha Community Action (GOCA), the Nebraska Employment Service and private groups, Project REC was unique in its comprehensive approach to youth engagement on a military installation, the first and only of its kind at the time.
Participants ages 15 to 21 were employed at a wage of $1.40 per hour, primarily through the city-operated, federally financed Neighborhood Youth Corps. Their roles varied significantly, from maintenance tasks such as grass cutting and painting to specialized positions that included drafting, welding and kitchen duties. But what set the program apart was the personalized career
counseling provided by skilled Offutt employees, aligning job experiences with the youths’ career interests and aspirations.
For younger children, ages 8 to 14, Project REC offered structured recreational opportunities funded by the Nashua Corporation. This part of the program featured a variety of supervised activities including bowling, swimming and access to the base’s sports facilities and gymnasium. Enriching the experience, education components included discussions about citizenship and patriotism. Lunch was also provided.
Project REC was more than a summer job program— it was a pioneering effort to aimed at shaping young lives through constructive engagement while providing meaningful experiences to youth in Omaha.
Youth Visionaries: Shaping Future Communities
The Omaha Independent Primary is dedicated to highlighting the achievements, potential and opportunities available to our younger generation. This commitment not only benefits our youth, but also strengthens our community and presents a unique opportunity for local businesses and advertisers to invest in the future.
“Visionaries,” will spotlight the incredible talents and endeavors of Omaha’s youth. Each article will tell the story of a local student or group making a difference, in academics, the arts, com-
munity service or personal skill. By celebrating their achievements, we aim to inspire others to pursue their passions and contribute positively to society. In addition to feature stories, our “Future Partners” section will provide practical advice and resources for those looking to develop job skills and gain work experience. We’ll partner with local businesses to offer internships and mentorship programs, giving students the chance to learn from professionals in various fields. This collaboration will bridge the gap between education and employment,

Takeaway Lessons and Modern Application
The story of Project REC at Offutt Air Force Base in 1969 offers valuable insights into the benefits of comprehensive youth engagement programs. Here are several key takeaways from this historical initiative.
To further engage, we’ll host an annual “Innovation Fair.” This event will showcase the creativity and ingenuity of Omaha’s youth, with participants presenting projects and ideas in science, technology, specific arts and entrepreneurship. Local businesses will have the opportunity to sponsor the event, gaining exposure while supporting the next generation of innovators.
For advertisers, this ini-
tiative presents a unique opportunity to align with a positive, community-focused cause. By sponsoring our youth-focused content and events, businesses can demonstrate their commitment to the community and build a loyal customer base among families and young people. In return, our newspaper will provide coverage and recognition for our sponsors, ensuring their support is acknowledged and appreciated.

Layer Your Fragrance: Using products from the same fragrance line, such as body wash, lotion and perfume, can help layer the scent, making the perfume more potent and longer-lasting.
Don’t Rub the Fragrance In: After applying perfume, avoid rubbing your wrists together. This action can break down the fragrance and diminish its longevity. Instead, let the perfume dry naturally on your skin.
Apply Right After Showering/bathing: Your skin should be clean and hydrated. Your skin is warm and its pores are open after a shower, which helps to lock in the scent and provides better adhesion.
Store Perfume Properly: To preserve the integrity of your fragrance, store it in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat, which can break down the scent’s composition over time.

This model highlights the importance of fostering partnerships across various sectors to pool resources and expertise, thereby enhancing the scope and impact of programs aimed at youth development.
Integrated Approach: Project REC's combination of employment, education and recreation showcased the benefits of a holistic approach to youth programs. Today, integrating these elements can similarly help address multiple aspects of youth development, ensuring that youth are kept busy, not sitting or being ‘housed’ idly, but are learning and growing in meaningful ways.

HThe Hidden Curriculum: Navigating Mental Health in High School
By Lena Hart
igh school is a time of significant growth and change, but it can also be a period filled with challenges. Academic pressures, social dynamics and personal changes all contribute to stress and anxiety for many teens. As they navigate the complex journey to adulthood, young people today face unprecedented difficulties that can significantly impact their mental health. According to a 2021 report from the Surgeon General, the path to adulthood is marked by developmental milestones, emotional growth and the acquisition of social skills. However, this journey is not the same for everyone. Many young people encounter uncontrollable challenges, and today’s generation is grappling with issues that were less prevalent in the past. Alarming trends from recent surveys underscore this reality: in 2019, one-third of high school students—and half of all female students—reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, a startling 40% increase from 2009. Mental health is shaped by a variety of factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, relationships, neighborhood conditions and broader social forces. The influence of media and popular culture cannot be ignored, as they often damage young people’s self-worth, exacerbating feelings of inadequacy regarding their appearance, body image, popularity, intelligence, or wealth. Additionally, the constant stream of news about climate change, inequality, injustice, the opioid crisis and gun violence can add to the distress, making the world feel
overwhelming for many young people. While technology has undeniably improved lives by enhancing communication, providing resources, and increasing access to information, it also has its downsides. When misused, it can foster bullying, exclusion and other negative behaviors that undermine the supportive environments young people need to thrive. Given these challenges, it’s crucial to recognize the signs of mental health issues and know how to manage them effectively. Early intervention and support can make a significant difference in a young person’s well-being.
Recognizing the Signs of Mental Health Struggles
•Stress and Anxiety
While it’s normal to feel anxious from time to time, persistent anxiety that interferes with daily life is a sign that something more serious might be happening. Symptoms include constant worry, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating.
•Depression
In teens, depression can manifest as persistent sadness, a loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, and feelings of hopelessness. It’s important to recognize these signs early and seek help. Taking Steps to Manage Mental Health
•Stay Active
Regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress and
improve mood. Encouraging teens to participate in sports, dance, or even simple daily exercise can make a big difference.
•Healthy Eating
A balanced diet plays a crucial role in maintaining mental health. Nutritious meals can have a positive impact on mood and energy levels.
•Sleep Well
Sleep is vital for mental health, particularly for teenagers who need about 8-10 hours per night. Establishing a regular sleep routine can help improve overall well-being.
•Stay Connected
Maintaining healthy relationships with friends and family is essential. Encourage teens to talk about their feelings and to reach out when they need support.
•Mindfulness and Relaxation
Practices like meditation, deep breathing, and mindfulness can help manage stress. Teaching teens these techniques can provide them with tools to cope with challenging emotions.
•Talk to Someone You Trust
Monitoring mental health isn’t something to be ashamed of—it’s an important part of overall health. Encourage teens to talk to someone they trust, whether it’s a friend, family member, or counselor. It’s vital to remind them that they are not alone.
Resources for Support
•National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255)
•Crisis Text Line: Text “HELLO” to 741741
•School Counselor: Many schools offer mental health resources and school counselors are often available to provide support and guidance.
Mental health is an essential aspect of a young person’s overall well-being. By recognizing the signs of mental health struggles and taking proactive steps to manage them, teens can navigate the challenges of high school and beyond with greater resilience. It’s important for parents, teachers and the community to provide the support and resources needed to help young people thrive. With the right tools and a supportive environment, every teen can face the future with confidence and hope.

White (non-Hispanic): 8.5%
A Path to Prevention
Although there’s no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, lifestyle changes can help reduce the risk. By focusing on the following key factors, you can take proactive steps to protect their brain health and overall well-being:
Health Monitoring at Home: Utilizing home blood pressure and glucose monitoring kits, heart rate monitors, and health apps on smartphones can help individuals keep track of vital health indicators. Regular monitoring allows for early detection of any issues, making it easier to manage and address them before they lead to more serious complications. This proactive approach is especially important in managing chronic conditions like diabetes.
A Growing Concern for At-Risk Communities Diabetes &Alzheimer’s:
Alzheimer's disease (AD) continues to be the leading cause of dementia, its increasing prevalence, particularly in communities with high rates of diabetes, raises serious health concerns by Idelle Wright
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, a progressive neurological disorder that significantly impairs memory, thinking and behavior. As AD advances, it leads to severe cognitive decline, ultimately interfering with daily life. The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease is increasing, particularly in communities where diabetes is widespread, raising concerns about the future health of these populations. Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain, which disrupt communication between brain cells and cause cell death. This neurodegenerative process results in a gradual loss of cognitive abilities, including memory and reasoning. While the exact cause of Alzheimer's remains unknown, several risk factors have been identified, including age, genetics, and certain health conditions—particularly diabetes. Type 2 diabetes, marked by insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar levels, has been identified as a significant risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. Chronic high blood sugar can damage blood vessels in the brain, increase inflammation, and contribute to the formation of amyloid plaques and tau tangles, all of which are associated with Alzheimer's disease.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, people with diabetes are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease compared to those without diabetes. This alarming statistic underscores the growing concern that communities with high rates of diabetes may also face a corresponding increase in Alzheimer's disease cases in the near future.
Preventing or delaying the onset of Alzheimer's disease is critical for maintaining quality of life and reducing the burden on families, caregivers, and healthcare systems. As the population ages, the number of individuals affected by Alzheimer’s is expected to grow, making preventive efforts more crucial than ever.
The connection between diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease is real, alarming and taking steps to control key risk factors—such as maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, managing stress and consistently monitoring health—you can significantly reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Preventive measures are essential for safeguarding brain health and ensuring a better quality of life for future generations, particularly in communities where diabetes is prevalent. With a proactive approach to health, the tide of Alzheimer's disease can be stemmed, offering hope for a healthier future.
Diet (Including Weight Management)
Food Choices: A diet rich in whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of vegetables is essential for reducing the risk of both diabetes and Alzheimer’s (ALZ) disease. See the MIND Diet below.
Exercise
Physical Activity: Regular exercise, including activities such as walking, bike riding, and using community health fitness centers, is crucial for maintaining cardiovascular and brain health. Sports like golf and tennis are also excellent options, providing physical activity while being low-impact and social. Even without a gym membership, engaging in free or low-cost activities such as walking in the neighborhood, participating in community sports, or biking can be highly effective. The goal is to stay active!
Stress Management
Mental Well-being: Who cares about “the haters”? Get over it and stop stressing about them. Managing stress is vital in reducing your risk of diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Reading books, staying out of drama and finding relaxation techniques such as meditation or spending time with loved ones can help lower stress levels. Avoiding unnecessary stress and focusing on positive, calming activities contribute to overall mental health.
Leisure Activities: Engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation, like gardening, playing music, or even hobbies like knitting, can provide a mental break and reduce stress.
Sleep
Importance of Sleep: Adequate sleep is crucial for brain health and can significantly reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. During sleep, the brain clears out toxins, including the amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer’s. Adults should aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. Good sleep hygiene practices, such as maintaining a regular sleep schedule, creating a comfortable sleep environment, and avoiding caffeine or electronic screens before bedtime, can enhance sleep quality.
Regular Monitoring
The MIND Diet Short for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay, is a brain-healthy eating plan developed by researchers to support cognitive function and potentially reduce the risk of ALZ
It combines elements from the Mediterranean and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diets, both of which emphasize whole, natural foods.

Thunderbirds Lead the Return of Offutt Air Show After Six-Year Hiatus
Offutt Air Force Base recently hosted its first air show in six years, called the Defenders of Freedom Air & Space Show, on August 24-25, 2024. This event marked the return of the air show after a long pause due to various challenges, including a major flood in 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic, and necessary runway repairs that prevented earlier events.
The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds were the main attraction, performing for the first time at Offutt since 2018. The show also featured other impressive acts, such as the U.S. Navy F/A-18 East Coast Super Hornet Demonstration Team. In addition to the aerial performances, attendees could explore various static displays, watch ground demonstrations, visit exhibitors showcasing different aspects of aviation and military technology and there were plenty of food vendors and music accompanying the performances. The air show was open to the public and free of charge, attracting large crowds and highlighting the strong support for the military in the local communities of Omaha and Lincoln. Organizers are already planning future shows, hoping to build on the success and lessons learned from this year's event.
Hot air balloons have a fascinating history dating back to the late 18th century, marking one of the earliest forms of human flight. The first successful manned flight of a hot air balloon took place on November 21, 1783, in Paris, France. The balloon was designed by the Montgolfier brothers, Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne, who were inspired by the way smoke from a fire would rise. They constructed a balloon made of silk and lined with paper, and filled it with hot air generated from burning straw and wool. This pioneering flight carried two passengers, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d'Arlandes, who ascended to an altitude of about 3,000 feet and traveled over five miles across the city. The success of this flight captured the public's imagination and set the stage for further advancements in ballooning. Early balloons were often used for scientific experiments, such as studying the atmosphere and were later employed for military reconnaissance during the American Civil War and World War I. In the 20th century, hot air ballooning became more accessible to the public as a recreational activity. Modern balloons are typically made from durable

National Grandparents Day
A Celebration of Wisdom and Family Ties
OMAHA, Neb. — National Grandparents Day, observed on the first Sunday after Labor Day, is a holiday dedicated to honoring the unique contributions of grandparents to their families and society. Established in 1978 by a proclamation from President Jimmy Carter, the day serves as a reminder of the enduring value of intergenerational connections. The idea for National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a homemaker from West Virginia. McQuade, a mother of 15 and grandmother of 40, recognized the vital role grandparents play in the lives of their grandchildren and sought to create a national holiday to honor them. Her campaign, which began in the early 1970s, emphasized not only the personal impact of grandparents but also their broader contributions to society. McQuade's efforts gained significant support, leading to the passage of a resolution in Congress. On Aug. 3, 1978, President Carter signed the proclamation establishing National Grandparents Day. The proclamation highlighted the importance of grandparents as "the nation's greatest natural resource" and called

for a day of recognition and appreciation.
National Grandparents Day is designed to celebrate the bonds between grandparents and grandchildren and to acknowledge the wisdom and experience that grandparents bring to their families. In a rapidly changing world, where technology often dominates communication, the holiday serves as a reminder of the value of face-to-face interactions and the importance of preserving family traditions. Grandparents are often the keepers of family stories and traditions. They provide a sense of continuity and stability that’s essential for healthy family dynamics."
In addition to fostering family connections, National Grandparents Day also raises awareness of the challenges faced by many elderly individuals. Issues such as isolation, health care access, and elder abuse are significant concerns in aging populations. The holiday encourages families and communities to support and advocate for their elderly members. National Grandparents Day is celebrated in various ways across the United States. Many families use the occasion to spend quality time with their grandparents, whether through spe-
cial outings, meals, or simply sharing stories. Schools and community organizations often host events that bring together multiple generations, promoting understanding and cooperation. Today, the holiday has taken on added significance as grandparents increasingly play a critical role in childcare and family support. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 2.7 million grandparents are primary caregivers for their grandchildren, a figure that underscores the essential role they play in modern family life. Grandparents are the unsung heroes of many families. National Grandparents Day gives us an opportunity to thank grands for their love, wisdom, and support.
As National Grandparents Day continues to be celebrated across the country, the holiday encourages people to honor the grandparents in their lives.

At the Pump
Protect yourself from potential skimming practices
by Maxwell Tate
Retiring Justice prompts selection process to begin. Governor Pillen to decide by The Omaha Primary Why It Matters Get Exactly What You Paid For
When we engage in a transaction, we expect to receive exactly what we pay for. Is it possible that at some gas stations, small amounts of money are not fully accounted for during fuel transactions? Though these discrepancies may appear trivial, they could potentially aggregate to significant earnings for the operators, detrimentally affecting unsuspecting customers.
Recently experienced this issue firsthand while filling up at a local gas station using a large bill. After paying with a fifty-dollar bill, the gas pump stopped ten cents short. Assuming my tank was full, I placed the pump handle back on the pump, got in my car and drove away. Did I notice the tank wasn’t full? Yes. What did I think? “It’s no big deal. It’s only a dime.” But, this wasn’t the first time this had happened at particular stations. I went back. The attendant reluctantly refunded my ten cents, saying, “Your gas tanks was full.” I responded, “No, it wasn’t.” Others have mentioned similar incidences happening to them especially when using large bills during the transaction. Sure, these incidences could be “harmless” accidents, coincidences or simple pump mistakes. Or they could be calculated rip-offs? When the pump stops a few cents short, most people don’t take
room at the State Capitol in Lincoln. During this hearing, members of the public are invited to present testimony or submit written comments for the commission’s consideration. Written comments must be submitted by September 27 via email or mail to Justice Lindsey Miller-Lerman. This public involvement is critical, as it ensures transparency and allows the community to have a voice in the selection of the next Chief Justice. Chief Justice is not just an administrative change—it is a decision that will shape the legal landscape of Nebraska for years to come. The Chief Justice has significant influ-
ence over the state's judicial system, impacting everything from legal precedent to the administration of justice. Their decisions can affect a wide range of issues, including civil rights, criminal justice, business regulations, and family law. For Nebraska communities, this is an opportunity to ensure that the values and priorities of the people are reflected in the state's highest court.
the time to go back into the station to reclaim their money. They might assume the discrepancy is minor, or they are in a hurry and don’t want to be inconvenienced. This creates a perfect opportunity for gas stations to exploit the situation repeatedly. Is this really a small matter? Even if each transaction skims as little as $0.01, it’s a win for the station. Assuming a busy station handles 500 transactions daily with a $0.01 skim, that’s $5 a day, an annual gain of $1825. While a penny might seem insignificant, over time and across numerous transactions, at many chains, even a penny becomes a “big deal”. In areas where these practices are more prevalent, the financial gains (or thefts) can be considerable. In my own case, remember, the skim was $0.10, not a penny.
1. If you notice a discrepancy at the pump address it immediately. 2. Keep a record of instances where the pump stops short of the paid amount. Note the date, time and specific gas station.
3. Report recurring instances or patterns to consumer protection agencies or the state attorney general's office.
The practice of skimming at gas pumps, even by a few cents, is fraudulent and exploits consumer trust. Staying vigilant, documenting incidents and reporting suspicious behavior deters deceptive practices.
Every penny counts for someone. Make your dollars and cents add up for what’s best for you.

Your creations are not just your passion— they’re your livelihood. Ensuring that your artwork is protected from unauthorized use is crucial. Understanding copyright laws and how to effectively safeguard your work can provide peace of mind and legal recourse if your rights are infringed upon.
What is Copyright?
Copyright is a form of intellectual property law that grants the creator of original works exclusive rights to their use and distribution. This includes artwork, literature, music, and other creative expressions. Copyright protection is automatic upon creation and does not require registration, although registration provides additional benefits. Automatic Protection
From the moment you create a piece of artwork and fix it in a tangible medium (such as a canvas, paper, or digital file), it is automatically protected by copyright. This means you hold the exclusive rights to reproduce, distribute, perform, display, or license your work. While you do not need to place a copyright notice on your work for it to be protected, doing so can be beneficial.
Benefits of Registration
While your work is protected as soon as it’s created, registering your copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office offers several additional advantages:
•Legal Evidence: Registration provides a public record of your copyright claim and serves as prima facie evidence in a court of law.
•Statutory Damages and Attorney’s Fees: If you register your work before an infringement occurs or within three months of publication, you can seek statutory damages and attorney’s fees in an infringement lawsuit.
•Deterrent Effect: Official registration can deter potential infringes from using your work without permission.
Placing a Copyright Notice
While not required, placing a copyright notice on your artwork can serve as a reminder of your rights and deter unauthorized use. A typical notice includes: The © symbol, or the word “Copyright” The year of first publication The name of the copyright owner
Enforcing Your Rights
If you discover that your artwork has been used without your permission, here are steps you can take:
•Contact the Infringer: Often, a cease-and-desist letter can resolve the issue without further action.
•DMCA Take-down: For online infringements, you can file a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) take-down notice with the hosting platform to have the infringing content removed.
•Legal Action: If necessary, you can file a lawsuit to enforce your rights and seek damages, which can include confiscation of goods and monetary compensation.
The Importance of Copyright Notices and Legal Consequences
Removing a copyright notice from a work is a violation of copyright law. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) prohibits the removal or alteration of copyright management information (CMI), which includes the copyright notice. This act protects against attempts to obscure the ownership and original source of the work. Even if a copyright notice is removed, the work remains protected by copyright law, and the original creator retains all rights.
Next issue: Damages to seek in court
Removing a notice and using the work without permission constitutes copyright infringement, the most serious violation, which can lead to significant legal consequences, including statutory damages and legal action. Protecting your works through copyright is essential to maintaining control over your creations and ensuring you’re properly compensated for their use.
If your copyright is infringed, act promptly by either suing the infringer immediately or, as a matter of courtesy, sending a cease and desist letter. A cease and desist is often used as a preliminary step to resolve the issue without going to court, giving the infringer a chance to stop the infringement voluntarily. It is not a legal requirement; you can choose to proceed directly with filing a lawsuit or monitor the situation to see if the infringement continues. If the infringer doesn’t respond to your cease and desist letter, it doesn’t mean your options are exhausted or that your rights are diminished. The notice is a courtesy you’re extending to the infringer. Ignoring your letter doesn’t free them from liability—it may actually strengthen your case if you decide to pursue legal action, including demanding the return or destruction of any merchandise that incorporates your work, as well as seeking various monetary remedies.
The Family Breakfast Habit
Boosts physical well-being, strengthens family connections and promotes healthy habits by Calandra Cooper
Shared Morning Meals: How Family Breakfasts Boost Health and Strengthen Bonds
Starting the day with a nutritious breakfast is an essential habit that can significantly impact overall health and well-being. However, the benefits of breakfast are even more pronounced when families eat together. This simple routine can enhance physical health, foster stronger family relationships, and establish lifelong healthy eating habits. Breakfast is often referred to as the most important meal of the day. Many believe, for good reason. It replenishes the body’s supply of glucose, boosts energy levels and provides essential nutrients needed for the day ahead. Skipping breakfast can lead to decreased concentration, slower metabolism and an increased likelihood of overeating later in the day. Studies have shown that children who eat breakfast regularly perform better academically and exhibit improved cognitive function and memory . Eating breakfast together as a family can amplify the health benefits of this essential meal. Families that prioritize eating together tend to consume more nutritious foods, including fruits, vegetables and whole grains, while reducing the intake of sugary drinks and unhealthy snacks. This collective approach to healthy eating helps in maintaining balanced diets and controlling weight. Additionally, the act of eating together encourages mindful eating, where individuals pay more attention to their hunger and fullness cues, promoting healthier eating patterns . Beyond the nutritional advantages, eating breakfast together strengthens family bonds. It provides an opportunity for family members to connect, share experiences and communicate openly, fostering a sense of belonging and security. This daily interaction can help in building stronger relationships, understanding each

To craft a balanced and long-lasting fragrance, it’s essential to understand the three layers of scent: top notes, middle notes and base notes. These layers work together to create a well-rounded fragrance experience.
Top Notes:
These are the initial scents you notice right after application. They usually include fresh, light ingredients like citrus, herbs and light florals. Examples include lemon, bergamot and basil.
Middle Notes:
These emerge after the top
notes fade, forming the heart of your fragrance. They often include more robust florals and spices, such as lavender, rose and jasmine.
Base Notes:
These are the foundation of your scent, providing depth and longevity. Common base notes are woody or musky, like sandalwood, patchouli, and vanilla.
To create your personal scent, choose essential oils that resonate with your preferences and personality.

Senator’s District 11 Legislative Focus: The Incarcerated
McKinney's Criminal Justice Reform, Masked as Property Tax Relief, Fails to Gain Traction by Calandra Cooper
McKinney’s Push Falls Flat in Special Session
As District 11 faces significant economic and social challenges, Senator Terrell McKinney’s legislative proposals—Legislative Bill 71 (LB 71) and Legislative Bill 25 (LB 25)—have sparked important discussions about their potential impact. With high poverty rates, elevated crime levels and widespread economic instability, these bills don’t fully address the community’s most pressing needs. LB 71 aims to legalize the sale, distribution and manufacturing of cannabis—commonly known as “weed”—while also expunging the criminal records of those previously convicted for related offenses. This effort is framed as “social justice” for communities most impacted by weed being illegal. However, this reasoning overlooks the broader implications for District 11, where poverty and crime are already significant issues. The notion
that legalizing weed and expunging records will serve as social justice feels overly simplistic and disconnected from the realities on the ground. Proponents of LB 71 argue that legal weed could generate significant tax revenue, potentially alleviating some property tax burdens. However, introducing weed into a community where 43.3% of children live in poverty and 33.3% of families are below the poverty line could lead to unintended consequences. While tax revenue is beneficial, the risks of increased substance abuse and additional strain on social services could outweigh these gains, especially in a community already facing economic instability. District 11 also struggles with a higher-than-average crime rate, making weed legalization particularly concerning. While some believe legal weed might reduce the illegal drug trade, it

could also increase illegal dealing and related criminal activities. In a district where public safety is a critical issue, this move could complicate efforts to enhance safety and stability.
LB 25 proposes reducing the state’s prison population by offering alternative sentencing, shortening sentences and expanding parole opportunities, aiming to lower incarceration costs and redirect funds to property tax relief. While this might reduce state expenses, it raises concerns about the impact on public safety, especially in a community already grappling with high crime rates and economic instability. The focus on reducing sentences appears more aligned with aiding those within the criminal justice system rather than addressing the broader needs of District 11 and communities across Nebraska.

Council Adopts Conduct Code Amid Controversy
reform seems to overlook the immediate needs and concerns of a community struggling with poverty, unemployment and safety. While criminal justice reform is vital, it must be balanced with initiatives that address the root causes of economic and social instability. While McKinney’s efforts to reduce property taxes are commendable, the methods proposed—legalizing weed and reducing prison sentences to help alleviate property tax burden —isn’t an effective or prudent approach. In a community facing significant challenges, effective partnership requires a broader critical and forward thinking.
Omaha City Council's recent 6-1 vote to adopt a new code of conduct and propose an amendment for the November ballot marks a pivotal move in formalizing ethical standards. While supporters argue it promotes fairness and integrity, concerns have been raised about its potential impact on minority voices, with critics suggesting it targets Councilwoman Juanita Johnson, who cast the lone dissenting vote by Calandra Cooper
Johnson votes no to City Of Omaha first ever council code of conduct
The Omaha City Council recently voted 6-1 to adopt a code of conduct and to place a related amendment on the November ballot. The proposed amendment would add new grounds for forfeiting a council member’s seat, including not residing in their district, missing four meetings without permission, and violating the new code of conduct. This vote represents a significant step towards formalizing ethical standards within the council.
Councilwoman Juanita Johnson, who represents North Omaha’s District 2, which coves parts of North Omaha, including District
11, cast the lone dissenting vote, citing concerns that the language of the code was too vague and could negatively impact minority voices. Critics, including State Sen. Terrell McKinney, believe the measures specifically target Johnson. Johnson has been publicly in the news. Some attendees at the initial public meeting suggested that implementing the code of conduct amounts to voter suppression by potentially silencing dissenting voices. However, these claims have been met with skepticism by those who support the measure. Proponents of the code, such as
Councilman Brinker Harding and Councilwoman Aimee Melton, have emphasized that the code is not aimed at any specific individual. They argue that the code is necessary to promote ethical behavior and protect city employees, ensuring that all members are held to the same standards. This, they assert, fosters fairness and integrity within the council for everyone.
The argument that a code of conduct could negatively impact minority voices has been met with opposition. A well-implemented code of conduct is intended to ensure that all members, regardless of their background,

adhere to the same ethical standards. In theory, this should protect minority voices by establishing a fair and respectful environment for all. The need for a code of conduct is not contentious; in fact, it’s surprising that one wasn’t already in place. If the current situation has highlighted the necessity for such a measure after decades without one, it speaks volumes about its importance. The purpose of a code of conduct is to establish clear expectations and ensure that all council members here to the same ethical guidelines. Such a measure is essential for promoting a culture of re-
spect and professionalism, ultimately benefiting both the council and the community as a whole.

Congress & Cornbread: A Culinary Conflict
Even cornbread once fueled a fierce divide, highlighting cultural tensions between North and South. This tale of culinary contention reminds us that common ground, like the perfect cornbread recipe, can still be found by Calandra Cooper
In the grand halls of Congress, where debates rage over budgets, policies and the future of the nation, there’s one issue that once silently divided Americans: cornbread. Yes, you heard it right. The humble cornbread sparked as much heated discussion in the past as any major policy does today, drawing lines between North and South, and now, metaphorically, Democrats and Republicans.
The cornbread debate dates back to the early 1900s when Rep. Beauregard Smithfield of Georgia famously taunted his Northern colleagues in the House of Representatives over their lack of cornbread-making skills. Smithfield, a proud Southerner, couldn’t tolerate the abominations his Northern peers called “cornbread.”
“They call it cornbread,” Smithfield scoffed, “but it no more resembles the real thing than a boiled hawk resembles a broiled pheasant.”
Smithfield’s remarks struck a chord, highlighting the deep cultural divide in culinary traditions. Northerners, unaccustomed to the rich, dense texture of Southern cornbread—Lord have mercy if they’d ever gotten ahold of cracklin’ bread—found themselves on the defensive.
“We use sugar and baking powder,” they
protested, “to make our cornbread lighter and
sweeter!” But, to Smithfield and his Southern allies, this was sacrilege.
“Cornbread is meant to be hearty,” they argued, “not a cake!”
Cornbread wasn’t just about ingredients; it was about identity, history and place. For Northerners, corn was largely associated with livestock

feed and, let’s be honest, bourbon. For Southerners, corn was a way of life, a staple that had sustained generations and they weren’t about to give up their ways, especially when it came to food.
The Great Cornbread Compromise Inspired by Smithfield’s fiery rhetoric, a bipartisan group of lawmakers proposed a novel idea: cornbread schools.
These institutions would teach the art of cornbread-making to future generations, preserving regional recipes and fostering a sense of unity.
“If we could learn to appreciate each other’s cornbread,” Smithfield might have quipped, “maybe we could find common ground on other issues too.”
While this cornbread school initiative never
actually came to fruition, the idea symbolized a potential for unity that transcended culinary preferences.
Imagine if Congress held a bipartisan cornbread bake-off today, using lessons from the past. Representatives from both sides of the aisle could don aprons and roll up their sleeves. The Democratic team, led by a determined Democrat named Eliza Fairweather, might present a fluffy, sweetened cornbread. The Republican team, with Smithfield at the helm, could showcase a dense, savory cornbread that was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
Judges, comprising Capitol Hill staffers and visiting constituents, would taste the samples in a room filled with laughter, friendly banter, and the occasional recipe secret whispered over the din.
In the end, it wouldn’t be about which cornbread was better—it would be about finding common ground, perhaps over a shared love of butter. The cornbread schools may never have come to pass, but the spirit behind them—a humorous yet earnest desire to bridge divides— serves as a delicious reminder that even in today’s polarized political climate, we can still come together
The High Stake Game of Unpaid Property Taxes: Investment Opportunities vs. Community Stability
The state is presently grappling about what to do about rising property taxes. People are getting taxed out of the homes and other real property. As a result, something else is happening and unpaid property taxes have emerged as a significant investment opportunity for many; call them savvy investors or predatory sharks.
In Omaha’s District 11—the most impoverished area in Nebraska—this issue is particularly pressing. With 33.3% of families living below the poverty line and an unemployment rate of 7.4%, nearly four times higher than the state average, the community faces unique challeng-
es. As property owners struggle to meet their tax obligations, the practice of capitalizing on unpaid property taxes through mechanisms such as tax liens, tax deeds, and consumer debt raises critical questions about community stability and the viability of homeownership. A tax lien represents a legal claim against a property for unpaid taxes, which investors can purchase. These liens are more than just financial products; they represent obligations that homeowners must satisfy by paying the owed taxes, plus interest and fees. Failure to do so can lead to foreclosure, allowing the investor to potentially take ownership of the home. While this can yield high returns—often surpassing those of traditional financial instruments—it places a heavy burden on families already struggling to keep their homes, particularly in areas like District 11, where property taxes are high, unemployment is rampant and there are few mechanisms to help homeowners catch up on payments. Consider a family inheriting a parents’ home only to fall behind on property taxes due to unexpected medical bills of a parent. An investor purchases the tax lien on their home, and now the family faces the risk of foreclosure unless they can pay off the debt, including interest and fees. This situation, profitable for the investor, highlights the harsh reality that many families face—losing their
homes over unpaid taxes. The potential for high returns from these investments is clear, but the social cost, at the expense of others, is significant. It is a double-headed sword. In District 11, where a high percentage of residents live in poverty and a great many of its seniors are disabled, the district and those similar may suffer from a deteriorating sense of stability and increased displacement. Homeowners may be less informed about the severe consequences of failing to pay property taxes, especially if these obligations aren’t covered through mortgage payments or if they’re simply unaware of their rights and options.
Purchasing a tax deed, on the other hand, involves acquiring the property outright at an auction designed to recover unpaid taxes. This results in immediate ownership for the investor, but the property may come with unresolved liens and other legal complications. The rapid transfer of property rights can disrupt long-standing communities in District 11, displacing residents and undermining the cohesion that holds neighborhoods together. As property values and taxes rise, even financially stable homeowners may struggle to meet their property tax obligations on time, or at all. This issue isn’t reserved for poorer communities. Poorer communities are simply most likely to be effected the harshest, leading

to an increase in tax lien sales in these areas. Historically, consumer debt interest rates tend to be the highest among minority groups, resulting in higher rates of default. Predatory debt collectors often purchase unpaid consumer debt from original creditors at steep discounts—sometimes for mere pennies on the dollar. Once they hold the debt, they may sue the debtor in court to reclaim the original outstanding debt, not for their cost. If a judgment is ordered in their favor, they can garnish wages and bank accounts, place liens on property, or even force the sale of real estate. While the potential for high returns from unpaid property taxes is evident, it’s crucial to consider the broader impact on communities and individuals by developing a more balanced approach that supports both investment and community well-being, ensuring that economic opportunities don’t undermine the fabric of neighborhoods.

hanced by live music and the chatter of fellow diners—created a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, so much so, I’d forgotten about our order until I heard our number announced over an intercom. The fried catfish was exceptional, enveloped in a crispy, golden batter. The corn hush-puppies, which I’d heard was their specialty, were equally delightful, especially with a drizzle of honey that added a sweet, unexpected twist. The coleslaw was cool, fresh and crisp. I wanted more. The portions were generous, adding to the overall value. The gentle river breeze perfectly complemented our meal. Definitely a go back to spot. The Surfside Club offers a refreshing dining experience as satisfying as the food it serves. With its efficient service, quality seafood, reasonable prices and picturesque riverside setting, it stands out as an ideal choice for anyone seeking a laid-back meal in a scenic location. Good food. Nice cocktails. Good company. Good music.
