Life at Central Baptist College-What's it like? Well, being the small private school it is, CBC students are more like family. Everyone is much closer than might be expected at a college. The faculty is a major reason for this; they are men and women who are dedicated to a specific cause, and they really care about each student.

However, life at Central is also exciting like every other campus. After all, we are college students. We all have our moments of craziness; it just seems that some people's moments last twenty hours a day! All in all, life at CBC is great and the memories and friendships produced will last a lifetime.

HOMECOMING 1988

As every other year, Homecoming

$

'88 got off to a good start with the annual Alunmi banquet held in the careteria. Many people renewed acquaintances and relived great memories of CBC.

After the banquet, things moved over to Antioch Baptist Church

where the Central Baptist College Choir, still under the direction of

:

Bro. Jim Courtney, presented the musical "The Homecoming." The church was packed with chairs filling the isles.

f'" .

mm

The final event was the ballgame in A.R. Redding Fieldhouse. Before the game, the Homecoming Court was presented, and Miss Lori Haynes was crowned Homecoming Queen. The excitement went on

as the Mustangs won the game against Garland County Community College. The final

m

score was 89-73

BEHIND THE SCENE So many times we see the final production of a great event, but we don't know who's be hind it all. We would like to take a look "be

hind the scenes" of Homecoming '88 and see who's responsible for the great turnout. First, we have the coaches: Head Coach Stewart

/

Mark Hamby, Assistant Coach; and Jeff Rid

die. Team Manager lead the team to victory Second, Phillip Rice worked overtime on the soundboard for the production of "The Home

coming." Next, Bro. Jim Courtney was re sponsible for "The Homecoming." Dennis Partich ran the concession stand, Bobby Wil-

least. Donna Little played for our half-time entertainment. Thanks for making the 1988 Homecoming a big success.

The CBC Singers have worked very hard this year practicing, performing, setting-up, tearing-down, traveling back and forth to places all over the Ark-La-Tex. It is great that we have people who will take time out of their daily lives and make commitments to the Singers. Singers is not all fun and games. It's really a lot of work. There is Singer's Week before school starts when the singers come and learn their music and get to know each other. During the school year they practice two or three times a week, and then there are the concerts that take up almost every weekend. Mot only did the Singers practice long, hard hours for concerts, but they also recorded a tape called "A New Heart". We are proud of our Singers. They have done a great job this year, but they couldn't have done it without Bro. Jim Courtney who has to be even more dedicated than the Singers. Another person that needed to be recognized is Jim Turner. Jim has written almost all of the songs that the Singers sing. He's a very talented person, and we're proud to have him here at CBC.

On March 16 the CBC Choir em

The highlight of the tour was visiting Washington, D.C. The purpose of the tour was to sing to the smaller, more remote churches of our work. We

wanted to encourage them and to tell them more about Central, and we

also tried to have fun along the way. We didn't just sing in the churches; we got opportunities to sing in some very unusual places. Like, the oldest continuing church in the U.S. in Williamsburg, VA, the steps of the Lin

coln Memorial, the National Cathe dral, not to mention a restaurant in Nashville, TN. We would like to

thank Bro. and Mrs. Courtney for be ing our "dad and mom" for a few days and our bus driver. Bob Branscum, for getting us home safely.

DO IT THIS WAY, SHAWNA

Most people don't realize what It takes to produce a yearbook. Many feel that it just happens! That's just not the case. Not only do you have to be dedi cated and hardworking, but also you must have creativity; imagination, and writing skills. You can't expect to get every thing done in the three hours the class meets, either. A lot of extra hours must be put in. However, when you see the fin ished product, you can really be proud of yourself and know that your work is part of the memories of the school year. — Jerry Sawrie, Editor

A TRIBUTE To Bra. Paul Byers During the school year Central Baptist College lost one of its finest supporters. Paul Weyman Byers was a rock to CBC, and when he died at his home on January 17, 1988, we not only lost a former teacher and administrator, but a dear friend.

Bro. Byers was born in Nashville, Arkansas in 1927. His

parents were Rev. Paul G. Byers and Nora Jo Copeland Byers. He attended elementary and high school at Magnolia and served his country well during the second world war. In 1953 he married Laura Nadine Lester of Lufkln, Texas, and

they had three sons and a daughter; Stephen Paul, Robert Douglas, David Judson, and Lauretta Susan. Bro. Byers ex-

celled as a caring husband, fa-

*

ther, and grandfather.

Bro. Byers came to Central (then

fy\, -

Conway Baptist College) in 1954

^

as a student and employee. During his tenure here he had many

k

roles. When he was hired, Bro.

I

Byers became the first Chairman of the Mathematics Department at CBC. He wrote a math text-

I I I

book which was used at CBC.

Bro. Byers also taught science

1^

and church related courses. He

wrote Unto Him Be Glory, a book about the church. Bro. Byers was

nominated as an Outstanding

Educator of America in 1975, and was elected Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Central

Baptist College in 1979, a posi tion he held until he retired in 1986. Bro. Byers pastored

several churches throughout the area. From 1955-1980 he was never without a pastorate. He served on numerous committees and held many offices in the Baptist Missionary Association while at CBC.

The best description of who Paul Byers really was comes from his wife, Nadine, "Paul's personality and character

reflected simplicity and a directness, a dedication to goals or purposes. He was often physically frail, but his mind was

set on building, working, and serving with all his heart! He never forgot his calling!" We are dedicating the 1988 Towers to PAGL WEYMAN BYERS because he was dedi

cated to Central Baptist College.

In Proverbs 22:6, the Bible says "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it." Well, I don't consider myself a child anymore, but I do believe I'm still in the learning process. College life will teach you many things, especially how to be mature and accept responsibility for yourself. A good Christian education will be the most important thing I will gain from C.B.C. However, friendships play a major role in every aspect of your life here at C.B.C. I was "shy" when I came here, but had a nice "quiet" suitmate (Kim Raines) to bring me through. Since that time, I have become a social being. My friends and I have shared many times together, both crazy and serious. I thank God that I have gained these wonderful friendships throughout the year. I have gained a lot my freshman year at C.B.C., But one thing I haven't gained is a fellow. When I started looking for an Institute of higher learning I searched for the perfect college. My idea of a perfect college was a small Christian college that served good food, had personal maids for each student, with classes that didn't begin before 10:00 or after

2:00 with absolutely no homework, research papers, or tests. Of course my perfect college didn't exist, so I chose C.B.C., the closest thing to it. With its carpeted, airconditioned rooms, spacious parking lots, and paved driveways, I knew it had to be the place for me. When God showed me that this was His will I enrolled and here 1 am. Escape From Bruce Hall — When in college, one is embarrassed many times. I, myself, have had a few of those embarrassing moments and would like to share one with you. There 1 was, sitting in my room, studying for a big basket weaving test, when 1 felt a severe blow to the back of my head which knocked me out cold. The next thing I remember was waking up at 4:00 a.m. on a couch in the lobby on the third floor of the girl's dorm, completely tarred and feathered. There was no doubt that I was obviously a victim to a college prankster, probably Steven Carroll getting me back for throwing him out the bathroom window. After half an hour of disillusionment, 1 realized I needed to sneak out of the girls' dorm before getting into trouble — serious trouble. I

quietly made my way to the front door, thinking I was home free, but 1 had overlooked one thing, the newly installed alarm system. 1 was quickly reminded of this fact when I opened the door. Alarms went off everywhere while I tried frantically to turn them off. Behind me 1 began to hear many chuckles. 1 turned slowly to find every girl in Bruce Hall staring at me. They were in their robes, curlers, and without make-up(ahhhhhhhh! Men don't ever get married.) Imagine my embarrassment at knowing every girl has just seen me Jumping and flapping around with feathers all over me. I'll never forget the look of shock on Carol's face, or the disappointed look of Lori Gaines. As if things weren t bad enough, I still had to explain things to the Binns'. However, after explaining what had happened and them feeling my noggen, 1 received CBC's worst disciplinary action. 1 had to eat hot dogs for the rest of the year. Thad Tennis

I chose Central Baptist College because the Lord called me to preach so 1 switched from Arkansas State University where I would have been a Mathematics Education Major and played Baseball. I chose C.B.C. over S.B.C. in Walnut Ridge because it is in my associ ation, BMA OF A, and it has great Bible classes. To be honest I never thought about C.B.C. before the Lord called me to preach. I thought it was just for preachers and church related functions. After I came to C.B.C. it became my home. I love the atmosphere that I entered, it was pretty well what I expected. It's not perfect and neither is the student body, but it has potential and a caring attitude. Mow that I have been here, I wouldn't want to go to any other college or university in the world. C.B.C. is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I love it and respect it and would like to keep it going till

Why I CAME TO C.B.C.- Well, let's start at the beginning. Back in November 86, I received a letter in the mail from C.B.C. urging me to give them a try. I paid no attention

to the letter at all, I just threw it in my junk drawer. Then as my mother had me cleaning

nd church

up my room in the summer of '87, 1 found that letter again and this time I said to myself,

here that I I wouldn't

"John, you need to get some info, on this college." At this same time I had become severely disturbed with my previous decision to go to another college. After much prayer the Lord finally said,"Go to C.B.C. That's where I want you." So. . . Here I am and I thank

)est things

God for C.B.C. and the many friends that I have found here

When I was asked what the most exciting event was for me at CBC 1 was floored. I had never really tried to narrow it down to one single event. 1 thought and thought about it but I could not decide. Could it have been the week of orientation. That was a blast, or maybe it was when 1 met my roommate John Doe,(he never liked for me to mention his name because I always seemed to get him into trouble so I won't mention anything except his

initials are David Herring!) We had some great times together. I thought that maybe the most exciting event was when me and John Doe shot a bottle rocket at some police parked outside our window. I think that I was more scared than excited. Maybe it was all of the bonfires we had out at the cliffs, or the Dog Hog Fest. I caught the pig! The most exciting time could have been when me and some of my friends(you know who you are) stayed up in the Cooper Complex painting a backdrop for Harvest Party. Or it'could have been the mud slides and football games we played over by Bruce Hall. No, I think the most exciting event for me was the day I met a beautiful young lady who's name is Karen Hollowell. The times we've shared together has been ones 1 will never forget. Thank you Karen for putting a little excitement into my life! Chris Overby

When I was asked what the most exciting event at CBC was, many things came to mind. For example, nothing is more exciting than eating in the cafeteria. Something is always happening. Whether it be Thad Tennis stuffing hamburgers in his mouth or Steven Carroll squishing your hand in ketchup, something is always going on. Another thing that comes to mind is the weekend life of the students. If you are lucky enough to spend the weekend on campus, you can perhaps watch TV in the Girls' foyer or participate in a spades tournament. Seriously, though, the most exciting event during a CBC school year is Harvest Party. Everyone gets dressed up and goes out and has a great time. It is really something to look forward to. What stands out the most to me about Central Baptist College is that chance for a higher education under Godly principals. Central has been the best place for me to start my college education. Because the campus has centered its standards around God, I feel like through this environment God has been able to guide me more towards his will and understanding. Through my classes, I have learned from dedicated teachers who demon strate Gods principals through their conduct inside and outside class. Each teacher has challenged me to be the best for God's service while helping me to build upon a strong foundation. Because the school is based on developing stronger Christians in the higher education areas, I have found this to be the most precious gift this school can offer. Pam Burnett

One of my most embarrassing moments, wfiich has happened more than once, is when 1 split my pants in the girls' dorm! 1 am always cracking jokes and embarrassing people. Anyway, 1 decided to jump around and play with the girls. Well, 1 jumped one time too many. Half way through a jump, a loud rrrrrrrriip could be heard. Of course, my facial expression changed from happy and joyful to one of intense horror and shock. 1 landed and a cool breeze entered through the gap in my pants, which was the full length of the seam. Well, all 1 have to say is, 'You try walking across campus with ripped black pants and bold white underwear showing through!' 1 now buy my pants at least one size bigger. Carl Garner

z My first impression of CBC was a unique one. It was on Senior Day, 1985. Paul Silvey and Pam Castleman (at the time) were giving campus tours. About 9:00a.m. I was in a group of about 15 or 20 seniors and parents. Our guides decided to show us the boys dorm. When we were past the point of no return we encountered a young man returning from the shower, not wearing much more than a smile. That young man was Chad Lindval,

who politely expressed to us the fact that the dorm wouldn't be open to the public for three hours. The look on Chad's face could be described best as "surprised" when he realized that he was standing in mixed company. Chad quickly found an unlocked door and probably tried to find a good rock to hide under.

I've been asked, "how long do I plan to attend CBC". The answer is "until I get it right".

Seriously, I'm working toward being the first student to ever die on campus. I wrote Mr. Lincoln the other day. He wrote me back saying that he couldn't spare General Shermon or any troops to come down South for just one lonely Yankee, so I guess I'll have to learn to say "fixin", eat chocolate gravy, and cheer for the Razorbacks (It's a chilling thought, isn't it). Returning to the question at hand, my current plans are to graduate the same

year the chapel is completed or the Rapture occurs, whichever comes first (This last statement alone could be sufficient grounds for my dismissal). Vet, however long I stay, I will never, repeat never, order a coke when I really mean a Dr. Pepper. Dennis Partrich

Not that I haven't embarrassed myself plenty of other times, because I have, but I think I

really tipped it all off last semester. It was a Wednesday evening, and I had came back to my room after eating supper and was getting ready for church. I was supposed to go to church in another town with one of my friends. We had not set a definite time to be ready, so I was in the middle of my routine when the phone rang and it was for me. They came to get me and there I was with no clothes on, my hair in hot rollers, and no make-up on. I threw on my first pair of warm ups and shirt that I saw; I figured I could handle my hair being in hot rollers, but I forgot all about not having any make-up on my face. I ran to the foyer, and wondered why I was getting the looks that I was receiving from the people there. When I realized what I must have looked like, I nearly died, and my friends teased me forever about it. Barbie Gordon

Five years have come and gone since that hot summer day back in August of 1983. My pastor, Bro. Myles Evans, borrowed a church mem ber's van to haul me and my belongings to Central Baptist College. After

Bro. Evans and his family helped me move in, we said a quick goodbye then parted teary eyed. "Would 1 ever see them again? Don't leave me!" There 1 stood, all alone — with a bunch of other freshman who were all

alone. Pretty soon, we joined together and became the Freshman class of 1983/84.

It is now 1988; I'm still here. 1 have had people ask me when 1 plan to graduate (as if I have control over such matters.) Let it be known that T.J. only has one semester left with seven .hours to complete. That's it • we

1984 was the beginning of many changes around campus. Cooper Com plex was opened, Bro. Raines became our new President, and new admin istration, faculty, and staff members were added. Now, we are getting

parking lots and sidewalks! I have done a lot of growing up during my years at C.B.C. I can't imagine how my life would have turned out if I hadn't come to school here. By placing me at C.B.C., the Lord put me in an atmosphere where He could break me down and rebuild me into the kind of servant He wants me to be.

Someone asked me how I feel about leaving Central. Relieved. I have to be honest! Very sad. But in a good way. The Lord is going to begin a new chapter in my life. We must move on. Of all those principles I have learned at Central, one stands out the most

because I see it "lived" in the lives of the administration and faculty. That principle is:

"Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." Matthew 6:33

Some could say that 1988 was a difficult year for the Mustangs. Their record may not have been what every one wanted, and some injuries plagued the team all season, but spirit was there. Even though times may

ha .e been tough, everyone played with enthusiasm,

and the student body really supported them. Yes, the year may have been difficult, but sometimes the re wards of competition and teamwork are just as excit ing.

CLOSING

p

P

Now the puzzle is complete, and so is the year. 1987-88, like every school year, was unique. At times it seemed like we weren't going to get it all together, but we made it! There have been happy days, sad

days, and tense days; but they have all been special days. We've made memories and friends that will last a lifetime, but we've also gained an education that will serve us well wherever we are. We would like to

once again say thanks to the administration for their dedication and support; without them we could have never have gotten it all together. May the good Lord bless and keep you.

SPRING FLING

1988 Spring Fling was held April 18-22, with the whole TWIRP Week ending with the banquet on the 22. The Childers Cafeteria was transformed

into "Harold's Cafe" (Harold E.

Cooper, proprietor). Those attending were served a steak dinner by members of the faculty and administration and then were treated

by the faculty who provided the H.

entertainment.

Mark Silvey was chosen as Mr. CBC, and he certainly qualifies. He was an active member of the Central Choir and SQA Vice-President.

Mark planned this year's Tim Sheppard con cert, which everyone agreed was a great suc cess. All this, and just recently we elected him as our SGA President.

Likewise, Kim Halium has made a big contribution to Central. Kim is not the

type of person that tries to draw atten tion to herself. She just sees the job that needs to be done, does it to the best of

her ability, and doesn't expect tons of attention for it. This year as SWO presi dent Kim had the responsibility of plan ning, promoting, and overseeing TWIRP Week and Harvest Party. These events were fantastic!
