MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT A few years ago, Central Catholic made the decision to incorporate a focus on character education in all that we do. Character education is the intentional process of determining what sort of person we seek to become by examining a multitude of virtues and exploring how those intersect in our life. In the last two years, we’ve embraced the virtues of Faith, Responsibility, Honesty, and Courage, as well as Kindness, Integrity, Resilience, and Conscientiousness. These virtues influenced our summer reading, are being integrated into our curriculum, are becoming topics in our brown bag conversations, and over time, will become something our students incorporate into all aspects of their lives. We decided to do this, not because it was something that was missing–instilling these traits in our students is something that Central Catholic has always done–but as an intentional commitment to make the effort deliberate and public. It was done because it is vital that our goal remains that of graduating young men and women who are good people, no matter what life path they choose; young people who are prepared to make a positive impact in their communities. This deliberate focus on virtues–and the reflection on who we seek to be–is not just of benefit to our students; it’s good for the adults as well. As I prepared to write this message, I spent time reflecting on everything our school and community have experienced these past months. It has been an enormous challenge, but every single day I have been inspired by our students’ ability to persevere and make the most out of what they have, knowing things will get better. I’ve witnessed incredible creativity and courage from our faculty and staff who have tried new ways to keep our students engaged in learning. I have to say, we are not just doing this well, we are absolutely thriving in this area. Even in the midst of what we are experiencing each day, I see incredible kindness and appreciation shared with us from the parents of our students. They understand the challenge of the situation, but also see how much Central Catholic cares about their children. I am humbled by the incredible support our community of alumni, parents, and friends share with the school, ensuring we are able to remain committed to our mission.

2 | Central Catholic Magazine

I am filled with gratitude to those of you who continue to support our school. The economic impact of COVID-19 has been far-reaching and, as you might imagine, has touched the lives of many in the Central Catholic community. Just as this community has always done, it showed incredible generosity, allowing the school to support those many families and students who found themselves facing new, and often precarious financial circumstances. It is not surprising that our annual auction, which had to be changed to a virtual format, also raised a net profit well beyond anything we’ve raised in previous years. Our community embraced this change and found new ways to celebrate together all that makes this school so special. It was, of course, a challenge, but embracing these challenges and viewing them as opportunities, and seeing our way to something better, is what the Central Catholic community does. It is this sort of perseverance that we are working to instill in our students, and your support and actions provide us with incredible examples to emulate. Your continued support is an incredible beacon of hope to our families. Each day, we are reminded of just how unique and uncertain these times are. Your generosity allows our students to be surrounded by faculty and staff who care for them, challenge them, and continue to prepare them for a life full of purpose and meaning. Each day, as they join with their classmates on Zoom, meet in small groups for a class retreat, or work out with their team in cohorts, they are reminded that they are part of a larger community that cares for them. What an incredible gift for these young men and women. It would not be possible without you, so on behalf of our students and families, I say thank you. Sincerely,

Colin McGinty President

WELCOME

Anthony Gray

Educational Assistant Diversity and Inclustion Anthony Gray is originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, and has been living in Portland for two years. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oklahoma in Exercise Science, with an emphasis on restorative techniques and strength training. Anthony is currently continuing his education, emphasizing adaptive methods for special needs populations. He has been training for over 10 years, transitioning from YMCA sports, Oklahoma University Strength and Conditioning, and running his own inclusive training business. We had a chance to sit down and talk with Anthony: What drew you to be a part of Central Catholic? I was drawn to Central Catholic High School because of the sense of belonging I felt with each interaction I had. Central Catholic feels like a family, and it is a second family I am not only proud to say I am a part of, but proud to introduce my family to. What are you most excited about as you take on this new role? I am most excited to become a leader in Diversity and Inclusion in a dynamic and multi-faceted approach. While working closely with David Blue, the Director of Diversity and Inclusion, I will be introducing and facilitating our Adaptive Physical Education Program to our students. What do you see as Central Catholic’s greatest strength and how do you plan to build on that? Central Catholic High School’s greatest strength is its culture of acceptance, opportunity, and unity it is establishing. I plan to come in and contribute to maintaining, promoting, and adding value to this culture. During this school year, we are focusing on our four character virtues for the year: Kindness, Integrity, Resilience, and Conscientiousness. Which of these virtues resonates with you the most? Resilience: Something I practice often in my life along with the other virtues, but this year I wish to share resilience and the things like strength and courage that come with it.

Avery Heater Drama Teacher

Avery Heater grew up in Newport, Oregon, which is where her parents still reside. She attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2014. For the past three years, Avery has enjoyed working at Concordia University in Portland, serving as the Assistant Director of Admissions, and earning her master’s degree on the side. She currently lives in Northeast Portland, where she spends a lot of 4 | Central Catholic Magazine

time outside, and a lot of time in the kitchen. She’s a baker and loves making custom cakes. She’s even done a few weddings! Avery continues to act, and was most recently seen performing with the Lakewood Theatre Company in Lake Oswego. We sat down with Avery to get to know her better: What drew you to be a part of Central Catholic? I have known for some time that teaching theatre is where I’m meant to be, and I love that Central Catholic gives me the opportunity to do so within a faith community! What are you looking forward to the most about being a part of Central Catholic? Getting to know the whole community. I plan to get involved in as many aspects of Central Catholic life as possible, especially through service and volunteer opportunities. What are you most excited about as you take on this new role? Diving into the work of the theatre. I saw a ton of professional theatre in New York, but by far the most inspiring, vulnerable performances took place in my conservatory classes. I hope to create that kind of a welcoming environment where my students can express themselves and freely explore the craft. Do you have any connections to Central Catholic? Not yet! What do you see as Central Catholic’s greatest strength and how do you plan to build on that? I believe Central Catholic’s greatest strength is their fierce commitment to diversity. The values of teaching and learning in a diverse classroom are endless. I plan to build on this by intentionally assigning plays written by Black and Indigenous playwrights. Theatre history has a tendency to become whitewashed; I will ensure that this is not the case in my class. What are your goals for this upcoming year? This year, I would like to entrench myself in all aspects of Central Catholic. In the classroom, my goal is that all students walk away with a rich understanding of the history of theatre, most importantly as it pertains to the social and political climate of each era. I hope students take away skills in character development, critical analysis, and technical theatre. Above all, my goal is to create a classroom environment that is a safe space to make big choices, and a safe space to fail. During this school year, we are focusing on our four character virtues for the year: Kindness, Integrity, Resilience, and Conscientiousness. Which of these virtues resonates with you the most? All of these virtues hold so much value, but the one that resonates most deeply with me is kindness. If you start every interaction with kindness, and with love, you’re already on the right track. Which of these virtues will you embrace/embody as you step into your new role? I hope to embrace all of these virtues as I step into this role—with kindness for all of creation, integrity and respect for every individual, and a conscientious, intentional mindset in all things. Resilience has certainly been tested during these times, and will continue to

WELCOME do so as we are tasked with teaching online; we are more resilient together, and I look forward to becoming a part of this community.

Marlon Holmes Social Studies Teacher

Marlon Holmes was born in St. Andrews, Jamaica. He and his family moved to New York in 1986, then to Florida in 1990, and he lived there until moving to Oregon in 2008. Marlon graduated from Portland State University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in History, and he has two master’s degrees in Education. He is married to a native Portlander and has three children. Marlon loves to go on trips with his family, play video games, collect sneakers, and he DJs on the side whenever possible. He is also involved in community projects such as the N/NE Housing Committee and the I-5 Rose Quarter Project. Here’s what Marlon had to say when we sat down with him: What drew you to be a part of Central Catholic? Having gone to Catholic schools for middle school and high school, I was intrigued with teaching at Central Catholic High School as an inner city school. What are you looking forward to the most about being a part of Central Catholic? I am looking forward to serving young people who want to learn and contribute to the betterment of their community. What are you most excited about as you take on this new role? I’m most excited about bringing a non-traditional curriculum into the classroom. Do you have any connections to Central Catholic? I have no prior connections to Central Catholic. What do you see as Central Catholic’s greatest strength and how do you plan to build on that? Central’s greatest strength for me is the community and I plan to build on that by introducing students to more civic engagement projects. What are your goals for this upcoming year? My goal is to build strong relationships with the student body. During this school year, we are focusing on our four character virtues for the year: Kindness, Integrity, Resilience, and Conscientiousness. Which of these virtues resonates with you the most? Kindness and resilience resonate the most with me. Which of these virtues will you embrace/embody as you step into your new role? I will greatly embrace kindness as a way to build relationships with scholars.

Jasmin Ruiz

Registrar, Administrative Assistant Jasmin Ruiz was born and raised in Portland. She graduated from Jesuit High School in 2014 and continued her education at Concordia University. She studied Communications, and previously was in social work as a case manager. Jasmin put her education and work on hold temporarily to focus on her daughter, as she welcomed her first baby in February. Now, Jasmin says it’s time for her to get back on track with everything, and she is excited to be at Central Catholic. Here’s what we learned about Jasmin: What drew you to be a part of Central Catholic? I was drawn in by the commitment to social justice and diversity. I was impressed with the commitment Central Catholic had made to be diverse in different areas, and that was a big factor in my decision to join Central Catholic. What are you looking forward to the most about being a part of Central Catholic? I’m looking forward to connecting with the Central Catholic community. I also heard there is a food drive that happens in December and I am so excited to participate. What are you most excited about as you take on this new role? I’m excited about the opportunity to engage with the community. Do you have any connections to Central Catholic? I was surprised to find out that Mr. Blue works at Central Catholic. He was our go-to person for many things when I was a student at Jesuit. What do you see as Central Catholic’s greatest strength and how do you plan to build on that? Central Catholic’s commitment to ensuring a Catholic education is attainable for everyone of different backgrounds is great! Being conscientious about where to allocate funds and ensuring students receive access to resources is where I would love to help. What are your goals for this upcoming year? One of my goals is to find balance. I often get so caught up with my work, but now that I have a little baby to care for, my goal is to be able to navigate work and my new role as a mother. During this school year, we are focusing on our four character virtues for the year: Kindness, Integrity, Resilience, and Conscientiousness. Which of these virtues resonates with you the most? Kindness resonates with me the most. Which of these virtues will you embrace/embody as you step into your new role? I want to embrace resilience. This has been a crazy year and it’s brought so many changes, good and bad. I want to embody that and remind myself and others that we’ve made it this far.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT it has been well managed, especially in recent years. There were a few years when Central saw some very tough times, but that’s no longer the case. Going coed was a factor in that. But Central Catholic has been much too reliant on a very few donors. There are a plethora of CC grads who can contribute. Central has been too timid. It’s time for the school to step up. Aim for the sky. Go for it. The world changes and it’s not going to wait for you. You have to change with it! Now is the time. CCM: Of the four character virtues our students will focus on this school year, Conscientiousness, Integrity, Kindness, and Resilience, which one resonates with the two of you at this point in time?

Margaret and Bill Walsh Central Catholic is blessed with thousands of generous supporters, many of whom have been supporting our school for decades. In this issue we would like to recognize the Walsh family, who sent six children through Central Catholic: Dan ’75, Bill ’76, Bernie ’77, Tom ’78, Robert ’80, and Kathleen ’88. The Walshes are also one of many multi-generational Central Catholic families who, in addition to their children, saw seven grandchildren graduate: Ashley ’08, Dan ’06, Megan ’11, Brian ’08, Leah Worrell ’09, John ’09, and Michael ’06. Recently, we were honored to have a lively and socially distanced conversation with Bill and Margaret. Central Catholic Magazine (CCM): Thank you so much for talking to us today, Bill (BW) and Margaret (MW). BW: Well, I’m not sure that we’re the people you want to be talking to but we’ll give it a shot. (Laughs) CCM: How did you first decide to send your children to Central Catholic? MW: Monsignor Francis Schaefers was a factor for me. Not only was he the first principal of Central Catholic, the founder, but he was my first cousin (and my godfather). I remember going to the Mass where he became a Monsignor. There was also the connection with Monsignor Murphy, who we knew through our parish, St. Therese. BW: I was a child of the Depression years, and we moved around a lot. I attended six different schools in 12 years, three Catholic and three public, and it was not always a pleasant experience always being the new kid. I was not always the shiniest student, but what I can tell you was that my experience in Catholic schools was far superior to the other schools I attended. We knew about Central Catholic through families we knew at St. Therese, and of course, through Fr. Murphy. He was a young priest at the time, and he used to run by our house on his daily jog. He was quite the jogger in those days and he would smell the peanut butter cookie smell wafting from our house. We’d open the door to the garage and there he’d be. (Laughs) MW: We just knew it would be the right place for our sons and eventually when it became coed, our daughter.

8 | Central Catholic Magazine

BW: Between the two of us, there was no argument about where we’d send our kids. CCM: After your children graduated, what kept you connected to Central Catholic? MW: There were so many great people, great friends who worked at Central Catholic, like John Shepard and Tom Welter. We also had seven grandchildren who have graduated from CC, and of course, Monsignor Murphy has been a friend for decades. BW: John Shepard was an icon in my book. I even hired him as a consultant after he retired from Central Catholic. And then there was Steve Halligan, who coached our grandson Michael in basketball and then continued to teach social studies after he stopped coaching. You could tell by the way he handled the kids and how he handled himself that he was one of those classic gentlemen, like John Shepard or Tom Welter. Central has a lot of people like that on staff, just so dedicated. Of course, we’d go to all the games. We still follow Central Catholic through the sports pages. CCM: Do you have a “rule of thumb” or a philosophy that guides your philanthropy? BW: First, we tend to look at where the dollars go versus the administrative costs, to see how well the money is being utilized. We like to give to organizations that impact people directly, where you know your contributions will be put to good use. We give to places like SnowCap in East Multnomah County and Meals on Wheels. We’ve given to our grandchildren’s Catholic grade schools [their youngest grandchild is twelve] and we’ve seen that our dollars are utilized to their fullest at Central Catholic. The need is always legitimate. MW: I would agree with everything he just said. BW: What? We agree today? How about that! (Both laugh) CCM: As CEOs, what advice do you have for leaders at Central Catholic, as we move into a new school year and a new decade? BW: I don’t know anything about running a school but I do know about running a business. I do think a school has to be run on business principles, and

BW: My answer to that is probably going to be different than Margaret’s but I would say kindness, especially given the last four years. MW: That’s what I picked too. Kindness! It’s so simple to be kind, if somebody just leads. But, I would also add resilience, because with all that’s going on with COVID, you’re going to need it. BW: You have to learn to draw on your own resources, your own resilience in this time in which we’re living. MW: Absolutely. CCM: What is your favorite Central Catholic memory? BW: I’m going to leave that to Margaret. Our kids graduated so long ago, I can’t remember. MW: Oh, there are so many. Besides the many friendships, I would have to say Grandparents Day. The brunch, the Mass, watching our grandchildren interact with their peers and teachers. The whole thing was just wonderful! CCM: Do you have seven grandchildren, or just seven who graduated from Central Catholic? BW: We have 14 or 15 grandchildren, I’ve lost track of the number, but yes, seven who graduated from Central Catholic. I would add that without the people, the personalities, without these iconic individuals, I don’t think Central would have survived, especially during those tough, tough years. It took those individuals coming together to create the support, the name recognition that the school now has. Also, the Central Catholic alumni group is pretty unique. It goes back a long ways. We had nothing like that in our high school days. CCM: Yes, in fact, last school year was the 40th anniversary of being coeducational. So, we’ve had women in our student body for as many years as we were all-male, though the first coed class where there were actually young women graduating, wasn’t until 1983. BW: It’s been that long? I never would have believed it if you hadn’t said that. Without question, going coed saved the school. Yes, the world changes and you have to adapt. CCM: Thank you, Bill and Margaret, for agreeing to talk to us today and thank you for your decades of generous support of Central Catholic.

I donate to the Tuition Assistance fund to help those students who don’t have the resources to afford a Catholic education. I believe that a private, Catholic education should not be reserved only for those who are able to afford it. The spirit of a Catholic value-based education should be available to all who seek it. I donate monthly because it works best for me and my budget. It’s also very convenient! Rick and his dad, Marko ‘47.

CREATE YOUR LEGACY Why do you feel it is important to support Catholic education? We chose Central Catholic because we wanted to give our sons, John ’65 and Tim ’69, a good, solid Catholic education. After their graduation, we began donating to Central Catholic in order to give other children the same benefits our sons had. I established The Donald R. Fromwiller Memorial Endowed Scholarship in honor of my husband when he passed away in 1995 and all my children (and some of my grandchildren) have donated as birthday gifts and Christmas gifts to me. It’s now an endowed scholarship and will continue forever, and I am very proud to have been able to do this. Looking forward, I felt it was important to include Central Catholic in my will because I wanted to give young people the opportunity for a superior Catholic education at a school where they learn good morals, receive an exceptional education, and where they become outstanding citizens. -Mary Fromwiller Include Central Catholic in your will or trust today and make a powerful impact on tomorrow’s students. Including Central Catholic in your long term financial plan allows you to: • Make a significant gift without affecting your current income • Provide a charitable tax deduction for your estate • Ensure the best possible education and opportunities for future generations To learn more about how you can invest in the future of Central Catholic High School contact Ellie Dir, Vice President of Advancement: 503.230.1056 ext. 1258 or edir@centralcatholichigh.org.

SPOTLIGHT SCHOLARSHIP heart defect called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The rest of that day, and the days to follow, were a blur. As people heard the devastating news, they began arriving at the Hellers’ home near Scappoose. Central Catholic teammates, classmates, childhood friends and their parents from Scappoose, neighbors, family, friends, and even the school custodian stopped by to pay their respects. Within hours, they had received more than 70 flower bouquets from loving friends (which together, the family later delivered to local care facilities). The Heller family was enveloped in love and support, though Bev says, “We found ourselves consoling them as much as they were consoling us.” This was their experience, all while navigating the most agonizing heartbreak imaginable.

The Legacy of David Heller ’07 Bev Heller remembers that November morning like it was yesterday. It was the day before Thanksgiving in 2005. The night prior, her 17-year-old son, David, had played in the Ram Review, a showcase of Central Catholic basketball talent, both boys and girls. He came home, did his homework, visited with friends on his cell phone, and then went to bed. The next day started out like any other, with the rush to get dressed, and making sure the family was fed and out the door. Bev was mentally preparing for a work meeting when, realizing that she hadn’t seen David yet, went into his room to roust him. When he didn’t respond, she touched his arm to shake him awake and found it cold to the touch. Immediately she jolted into her role as a trained nurse and began CPR while yelling to her husband, Jeff, to call 911. But it was too late. Her beautiful, smart, fun-loving basketball fanatic son, David, was gone, dead from an undiagnosed

David David Heller truly loved the game of basketball. Growing up in Scappoose, he participated in his first basketball summer camp at the age of seven, with kids who were older, bigger, and stronger than he was. The competition, the challenge, lit a fire in him. It drove him. As he grew older, he played summer league basketball, competing on the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Portland Legends team. He made the tough decision to transfer to Central Catholic as a sophomore because he wanted to push himself, both athletically and academically, to the highest level possible. He wanted to play with the best players against the top 6A teams in Oregon. Ultimately, his goal was to play Division I basketball. David’s father, Jeff Heller, who played under Coach Jack Avina at the University of Portland in the late 1970s, remembers giving his son advice on the game. “I would tell him, never leave the floor on a missed shot. Always try to leave the floor on a positive note,” he recalls. “David always did that, sometimes shooting 500 times each day. When it would get too dark to see on our outdoor court, he would move the

car around so the headlights would shine on the hoops. He cared that much about the game.” At Central Catholic, in typical David fashion, he continued to push himself. He was a 4.0 student at Scappoose High School and as he transferred out, he was told by a coach, “You’ll never make a 4.0 at Central Catholic.” He finished that first semester with a 4.11 GPA. Although his sophomore year playing basketball was disappointing, as he had to play JV, David’s junior year found him ready to be the Rams’ starting shooting guard. David was growing up, he had a dream, a big dream, and he was going to make it happen. Faith in Action: The David Heller Foundation When David died, the Heller family vowed, “David, we will never forget you. We will always honor you.” After his memorial service, as they began their new life without him, the family began to ponder this question: What was the best way to honor their beloved son and brother? Bev, ever practical and with her nurse’s training, hit on the idea of providing cardiac screenings for teenage athletes. If kids had to have a physical before playing high school sports, why couldn’t a cardiac screening be part of that process? Maybe they could raise funds to make these screenings available. Maybe they could prevent another family from losing a loved one, like they had. Bev says, “We couldn’t bring David back, but maybe we could prevent another tragic outcome.” The other idea that resonated with the Heller family was scholarships. David was passionate about following his dreams and pushing himself to achieve his goals. Maybe there was a way to help other kids like David pursue their dreams. From the seed of these two ideas, the David Heller Foundation was born, along with a big vision to help other youth, fund cardiac screenings for teenage athletes, and educate the public about the importance of cardiac screening. Bev adds, “The friends we made at Central Catholic played a major role in building the David Heller Foundation. These include Jeff and Mary Dunn along with son Corey ‘06, Scott and Nancy Stratton and their son Zach ’06, Bernie ‘77 and Jan Walsh and son Michael ’06, and Bob and Karen Freelander, with their son Jordan ’08. These families have been committed since the very beginning and have not wavered in their support. We could not have done it without them.”

L to R: Anna ’08, Jeff, Bev, Darren ’13, and Heidi pictured before serving Thanksgiving dinner at the Clark Center, where David served with his church youth group. This, along with wearing t-shirts that say “The Purpose of Life is to have a Life with Purpose”, has become a Heller family Thanksgiving tradition. 16 | Central Catholic Magazine

Healthy Hearts After obtaining their 501(c)(3) non-profit status, the Hellers wasted no time and screenings began, with the first taking place at Central Catholic, drawing more than 100 students and volunteers. The David Heller Foundation was the first group in the Pacific Northwest to do any such screening, and it wasn’t long before the volume

SPOTLIGHT SCHOLARSHIP of young athletes being screened necessitated a move, first to the Memorial Coliseum, and eventually to the adidas campus. A partnership with Legacy Children’s Hospital (now Randall Children’s Hospital) ensued and over time the number of teenage athletes screened grew from 200, to 300, to more than 500 each year. Today, while the partnership with Legacy has changed, the vision of the Heller family has endured. Legacy continues to conduct screenings in their urgent care clinics, with the David Heller Foundation funding screenings for kids who couldn’t afford them otherwise. Today, the David Heller Foundation also partners with PlaySmart, through Providence St. Vincent’s Heart Institute. Another partnership that grew from the tragedy was with the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA). Executive Director Tom Welter (also former Athletic Director at Central Catholic) had learned through a survey of OSAA member schools that many schools, especially in small, rural towns, didn’t have access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs), portable, life-saving devices designed to treat people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. Today, the focus of the David Heller Foundation has shifted to include funding the purchase of these defibrillators. Since 2014, the foundation has donated more than 250 AEDs to schools and towns throughout Oregon. Scholarships David Heller inspired two scholarships, one through the David Heller Foundation and the other, the David Heller Memorial Scholarship at Central Catholic High School. The first is open to anyone who applies and is awarded each year to “an exemplary student who has big dreams and is working with passion and determination to fulfill them.” This David Heller Foundation scholarship has awarded nearly $40,000 to 38 graduating seniors. The Central Catholic scholarship began in 2006 with part of the balance remaining from David’s tuition. It grew rapidly, fed by gifts from David’s classmates, teachers, friends, and family and reached endowed status in less than two years. The Hellers wanted this scholarship to go to a Central Catholic student who, like David “pursued his/her dreams with passion and determination, someone who participates in extra-curricular activities and life with a purist mindset; no drugs, no alcohol and total commitment to his team, his teachers and coaches, and his school.” To date, the David Heller Memorial Scholarship has awarded roughly $30,000 to 26 students, allowing them the experience of a Central Catholic education. The Heller Family: Resilience. Integrity. Service. Bev Heller is, by nature, a thoughtful woman and upon learning that one of the virtues that Central Catholic students will focus on for the

2020-2021 school year is resilience, she grew reflective. Resilience: it’s a character trait that resonates deeply with her because of the way her family has continued to live after David’s death. She says, “When Legacy told us they were ending our partnership, we felt so let down, so defeated. But, we had to continue to honor David’s legacy. He never gave up, ever. So, we couldn’t either. So, we shifted the focus of our foundation to that of providing defibrillators and found a new way to honor him.” She continued, “David was resilient too, in so many ways. Even in the midst of adversity or disappointment, he always saw another opportunity, always knew there would be another day. He also had integrity. He was exactly who he said he was. He was the kind of kid who said hello to everyone, whether it was the principal of the school or the custodian.” Jeff and Bev both talk about how David was impacted growing up in a small, tight-knit community like Scappoose, surrounded by his parents and grandparents, and being part of the St. Wenceslaus parish, where he was an altar server for ten years. As a little boy, he learned to serve at church dinners, to do clean-up, or stuff envelopes. Jeff adds, “David was also very close to his siblings. The day he passed, our three children brought all their mattresses into our bedroom and we all slept in that one room for the next month. One of our children slept there for almost a year. Our kids all agree that our tight-knit family bond got us through that difficult period.”

Jeff recalls a similar conversation from around the same time. “I told him how proud I was of him,” he says. “David looked at me and said, ‘You know what, Dad? Thank you so much for everything you’ve done for me.’’’ Jeff pauses and takes a breath. “I miss him so much. But, we got to be around him for 17 years and that is truly a blessing.” Bev Heller is a mom and admits to being a worrier, especially when it comes to her children. She remembers David telling her one time, “Mom, you need to relax. Just live in the moment.” She tries to do that today, to honor David, although it’s not always easy. But, she’s gratified by what her family, with lots of help, has been able to accomplish in David’s honor. “Faith got us through this,” she said. “And David will always be with us.” She muses, “Kids still leave notes on David’s tombstone, even 15 years later. One left a college paper he’d written. It’s a comfort to know he’s remembered so well.” The Heller Family has honored David’s legacy through their Foundation and through the David Heller Memorial Scholarship at Central Catholic. Endowing a scholarship creates lasting impact for students, allowing them to benefit from a Central Catholic High School education.

If you would like to remember a loved one by endowing a scholarship at Central Catholic, please contact Ellie Dir, Vice President of Advancement at 503.230.1056 ext. 1258 or e-mail edir@centralcatholichigh.org.

Family, community, church, all were part of David’s formation as a person, and how he viewed service, how his work ethic was developed. The Heller family continues to honor David’s legacy with this same ethic of service. Along with the board of the David Heller Foundation, they work to fund their mission, holding an annual gala at the Jantzen Beach Red Lion. This year the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to cancel the in-person event, on what would have been its 15th anniversary. However, they created a special video presentation with some of David’s former teammates and friends, which you can view on the David Heller Foundation website. Remembering David Bev and Jeff each have painful, but wonderful memories of intimate moments with David before he passed, brief conversations that they’ll always cherish. Bev recalls the night before he died. “He was so excited about the season and being a starter for the Rams. He said his heart was racing, so I was trying to get him to calm down. He looked at me and said, as if to get me to calm down, ‘Mom, if I die tonight, just know that I love you.’” Annual Report | 17

Throughout its history, Central Catholic High School has maintained a deep commitment to providing a college preparatory Catholic education to students regardless of their family’s ability to meet tuition requirements. The school’s General Endowment Fund provides a sound financial foundation, which in turn provides significant scholarship money and tuition assistance for students in the future. Only a portion of the earnings on the principal amount is used annually for scholarships and tuition assistance, making this a perpetual gift. The endowment fund generated $490,108 in scholarships and tuition assistance for our students for the 20202021 school year.

WE ARE

CENTRAL

CATHOLIC

GIVING TUESDAY 2019 Central Catholic’s Giving Tuesday received an incredible response from our community. We went into the day with three clear goals: 1. Raise $10,000 for tuition assistance. 2. Reach 80 donations from our community in order to “unlock” a $3,500 gift. 3. Gain 15 donations from GOLD alumni (Graduates Of the Last Decade: 2009-2019) to “unlock” a $3,500 gift. With generous challenge matches from our Board of Directors and an anonymous 1974 graduate, our Ramily helped us to meet and surpass all of these goals! Thank you to our Central Catholic community for your inspirational generosity and enthusiastic response! 2010s Alex Bobenrieth ‘19 Patrick Muskat ‘19 Emma Ramsey ‘19 Lauren Wright ‘19 Joe Lynch ‘18 Kaitlin Moore ‘17 Eric Pence ‘17 Connor Standring ‘17 Oriana Galasso ‘16 Julia Johnson ‘16 Julia Green ‘15 Kevin Laskowski ‘15 Sean Laskowski ‘15 Theresa Galati ‘14 Peyton Hill ‘14 Tom Hoang ‘14 Emalee Moore ‘14 John Nizich ‘14 Liam O’Malley ‘14 Andrew Green ‘13 and Elisa Herrman Emily Johnson ‘13 Morgan Klupenger ‘12 Anna Rego ‘12 Amanda Craig ‘11 Kathleen Lance ‘11 Meredith St. Clair ‘11 Carolyn Green ‘10 Hayley Holmes ‘10 2000s Dani Klupenger ‘09 Kelsey Schneider ‘08 Barry Hood ‘07 Tony VanDomelen ‘07 Bryce Bloodworth ‘06 Patrick ‘03 and Mallory Ferguson Eric ‘03 and Ali ‘03 Herboth 1990s Beth Barsotti ‘99 Andrew ‘99 and Rizeld ‘99 Hagerty Jenny ‘99 and Mike Streb Charlene Hannibal ‘97 and Colin White Celine Willard ‘97 Tiffany Weston ‘96 and David Mork Arianne ‘93 and David Cakarnis Christina ‘91 and Rob Blankenstein Eric ‘91 and Christine Gorger Maria ‘90 and Vince Elmore 1980s Heather Pashley ‘88 Mary-Catherine Sewell ‘86 Stan Arrigotti ‘82 and Monika Gold Mark ‘80 and Beth Farrell John ‘80 and Jackie Holland Bill ‘80 and Tiffany Mathews 1970s Dan ‘79 and Lori Duffy Frank ‘79 and Nicole Leipzig John ‘79 and Kathy Tercek Jeff Weber ‘79 Marty ‘78 and Masami Ryan Gerry ‘77 and Kathleen Gregg Mike ‘77 and Diane King Norm Parks ‘76

Congratulations are in order for newly engaged Tracy Cone ’90 and her fiancé Andres Kohn. Tracy was a member of Central Catholic’s 1988, 1989, and 1990 State Championship Golf Teams (now in Central’s Hall of Fame) and attended Arizona State University on a golf scholarship where she won two NCAA National Team Championships (1993 and 1994). After graduation, she moved to Oakland, California, where most recently she was Director of Operations for a consulting company specializing in facilitating interactive meetings using a customized app. After moving to Silicon Valley last year, Tracy volunteered for a pediatric research project at Stanford Children’s Hospital, until the pandemic disrupted her work there. Tracy, undaunted, continued with her volunteerism for her local food bank. With the pandemic causing demand for food to skyrocket, she reports, “It is a very humbling experience, but it’s rewarding to feel that I’m helping others who are really struggling during this time.” Tracy also volunteers at the 9 Lives Cat Shelter & Adoption clinic as well as at First Tee of Silicon Valley, a youth development program providing high-quality educational programs that builds character, instills life-enhancing values, and promotes healthy choices through the game of golf. While the pandemic also disrupted plans for their August 2020 wedding, Tracy and Andres are now hoping to reschedule for the summer of 2021 in Healdsburg, California. Cappy Mack ’89, a teammate on the championship golf teams, will serve as Tracy’s maid of honor. Tracy said the lifelong friendships she made, along with the culture of service, are two of the best takeaways from her time at Central Catholic.
