WELCOME MESSAGE

CENTRAL CATHOLIC YEAR OF THE WOMAN

Celebrating 40 Years of Alumnae Dear Central Catholic Community,

In 1993, I responded to a Central Catholic Magazine request to contact the school to learn more about the Central Catholic Alumni Association. John Shepard, Central Catholic’s Development Director at the time, called me back and invited me to lunch at Pal’s Shanty on Sandy Blvd. I had never met Mr. Shepard. He wasn’t working at Central Catholic between 1984-1988, when I was a student, but I could certainly understand why the popular Central Catholic alumni basketball tournament, The John Shepard Classic, was named after him. Just as when I was a student at Central Catholic, I felt welcomed and encouraged by Mr. Shepard to contribute my skills and give back. I had graduated from Central Catholic five years earlier, and after graduating from Santa Clara University, was just starting my career. I didn’t come from a big Catholic family, or have any special achievements or money to give, yet this charismatic, kind Central Catholic leader told me I belonged and he needed my help. That year, with Jon Myers ‘88, I helped plan our five-year reunion. Later, I joined the Alumni board, and in the spirit of establishing opportunities for women to have and build their alumni connections–like the men did with mostly male-attended alumni events–I co-founded the first annual Women’s Wine Tour in 1999. (Shout out to Tricia Hecht Glad ’91 and Carolyn Davey Schweitzer ‘85 who were on the first Women’s Wine Tour committee!) That first year, only four alumnae attended the Women’s Wine Tour, but by the third year, it was sold out and has continued to sell out every year since. In 2021, I was thrilled to have my daughter, Grace ’17, join the wine tour, marking the first year of two generations of alumnae on board. This fall, we will celebrate our 25th Women’s Wine Tour with a special gathering at Central Catholic followed by a visit to a local winery on Sunday, October 8. It’s no secret that Central Catholic is known for its welcoming community, and the Women’s Wine Tour has helped establish this sense of belonging and connection, for not just our alumnae, but for school moms and all the women in our community. Even if you’ve never attended the Women’s Wine Tour, I hope it feels good knowing you are always invited, and that the school is committed to strengthening our community of women. We are better together; men, women, and all people. I am proud to be a member of the Ramily and I hope you are too. Don’t hesitate to reach out and see how you can stay connected with our Ramily. Mr. Shepard and Pal’s Shanty are no longer with us, but their spirit lives on. You are always welcome, and you belong. Sincerely Yours,

Dena Dooney Dena Dooney ’88 Central Catholic Board of Directors Women’s Wine Tour Chair

Rewind Rams - A Trip Back in Time to the 1980s Thank you for showing so much love and support for our students THANK YOU SPONSORS: during our Twenty-Eighth Annual Presidents’ Dinner and Auction, Rewind Rams! The night was a celebration of our first co-ed graduating class and the ways in which women have benefited our community.

Our online auction opened two weeks prior to the live event, giving our community the opportunity to bid on packages such as vacation homes, wine tastings, gift certificates, and unique experiences. We are incredibly grateful to emcee, Crystal Thornton and auctioneer, Patrick Siver for joining this year. We also had the honor of welcoming Renee (Mack) Baumgartner ‘83 as our guest speaker. Crystal, Patrick, and Renee were a wonderful trio at our Rewind Rams celebration! We are grateful to the B.P., Lester, and Regina John Foundation for once again offering a $40,000 match for the Paddle Raise. The Central Catholic Board of Directors also offered a match of $9,800. In total, $190,000 was raised for tuition assistance! We offer a special thank you to our sponsors and advertisers, and to each of you who participated in this year’s Presidents’ Dinner and Auction. STUDENT PROFILE A recent grad of Central Catholic, Jahad Hudson ‘23, exemplifies the school’s vision for success. Jahad, a leader in the Woodlawn community, was recently featured in The Oregonian newspaper for his work as an ambassador for the nonprofit, Word is Bond. As an ambassador, he has given tours to Portlanders as part of a series called “In My Shoes” which aims to educate people about neighborhoods in Portland and Southwest Washington from the perspective of young Black men. Word is Bond is a leadership group for young Black men. Jahad shared with us that it begins with a seven-week summer internship and with a laugh, adds that participants were required to wear suits every day during their internship! The goal was for participants to immerse themselves in workshops to learn more about themselves, the community, and the people with whom they work. During the internship, the men were also able to work and interact with Portland Police with the hope that they can help bridge the gap that exists between Black youths and the police. Jahad’s first “In My Shoes” tour experience was in collaboration with police officers. Although nerve-wracking at first, he calls it a good experience, going on to explain that this opportunity allowed him and other young Black youths to show officers their neighborhood and the homes where they grew up.

At Graduation, Wes Guy ‘11, Central Catholic’s Student Support Coordinator, congratulates Jahad Hudson for his accomplishments.

IN MY SHOES

Woodlawn Tour Guide:

Jahad Hudson ’23

When asked why it was important to show their neighborhoods, Jahad mentions “gentrification,” and elaborates by saying, “With gentrification, many beautiful things happen, but you don’t have to move people out to make the city look better.” He feels it’s important to let others know the history of his neighborhood and that despite many changes, he and his family–along with many others–still have roots there. Jahad’s family is the fourth generation to live and own their home in the Woodlawn neighborhood, something he shares with pride. Through Word is Bond, Jahad has had many opportunities, the most memorable being the opportunity to spend a week in Washington, D.C. for the Spring Leadership Forum. While there, the Word is Bond group spoke with Oregons’ Senators and the mayor of Washington, D.C., and had the chance to lobby for public policy regarding Black Studies. Next fall, Jahad will be in Texas, attending a small HBCU [Historically Black Colleges and Universities]. Jahad hopes that his work continues to impact his community and he hopes to share with others the importance and significance of minority contributions and the impact they have on our society.

VALEDICTORIAN • SALUTATORIAN

Valedictorian

Salutatorian

This year’s valedictorian was Scarlett Helynn Starr Thomas, who graduated with an incredible 4.61 GPA. From student council to sports, Scarlett has taken advantage of just about everything Central Catholic has to offer. For two years, Scarlett participated in Student Council; first on junior class council, and then as Associated Student Body (ASB) President during her senior year. As a Rambassador, she was one of the many faces of the school community, participating in various events from Open House to elementary school visits. She was in leadership for both the Women in Sports Student Affinity Organization and Math Club. She also participated on the Constitution Team this year. Active in athletics, she participated in lacrosse and basketball all four years.

Charles Kenneth Black was this year’s Salutatorian with an outstanding 4.57 GPA. While reflecting on his four years at Central Catholic, Charlie says he experienced all the best the school has to offer, calling his experience “formative and self-building.” A Student Council member for three years, Charlie was Associated Student Body Vice President his senior year and credits his time in leadership for his commitment and interest in community service.

Scarlett Helynn Starr Thomas

When reflecting on her favorite memories of Central Catholic, overnight school trips stood out. From student retreats, Student Council and ASB retreats, to basketball trips at Gonzaga and in Arizona, getting to spend time with friends and classmates during these trips was memorable; strengthening bonds and creating new friendships. When asked about her favorite thing about Central Catholic, Scarlett was quick to mention the community. “From being in class with teachers and classmates to the student section at sports games, the Ramily is definitely the best thing about Central Catholic.” Scarlett feels prepared for college. She credits her rigorous Central Catholic education for shaping her by allowing her to take a wide variety of high level classes, instilling good study and time management skills, and inspiring curiosity beyond the surface level. In the fall, Scarlett will be attending Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She plans to major in Health, Medicine, and Society on a Pre-Med track. Prior to attending Central Catholic, Scarlett attended a Japanese immersion school and she hopes to continue her study of the Japanese language and culture in college. Scarlett’s advice to students, “Try things you might be scared to do. There are so many amazing opportunities available at CC when you take a chance to step out of your comfort zone.” 10 | Central Catholic Magazine

Charles Kenneth Black

A skilled student athlete, Charlie participated in cross country all four years and competed in various national and regional events, placing amongst the top 10 in the Oregon State Championships and top 100 nationally. Community has been Charlie’s favorite part of attending Central Catholic. He credits much of his success to his teachers and coaches who, he says, “Care so deeply for their students.” The tight-knit community provided him with many friendships; one thing he will miss the most. Earlier this year, Charlie was recognized as a College Board AP Scholar with Distinction. He was also named a U.S. Department of Education Presidential Scholar Semifinalist. Last fall, the highest-scoring participants in each state, representing less than one percent of the nation’s high school seniors, were named Semifinalists on a staterepresentational basis. In the fall, Charlie will be attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He will continue running cross country at a collegiate level. He plans on majoring in Bioengineering and hopes to receive an internship in the tech field. Charlie’s advice to students: “Do everything from a place of compassion and see the humor in life.”

AFFINITY LUNCHEON

Alumni and students gathered in the Weston Commons to celebrate their Asian, Desi, Pacific Islander, and Arab heritage and culture.

Affinity Luncheons: Alumni and Student ADPIA Luncheon Central Catholic hosted the second Alumni and Student Affinity Luncheon in a series of BIPOC [Black, Indigenous, and People of Color] alumni and student lunches. The Alumni and Student Asian Desi Pacific Islander and Arab (ADPIA) Affinity Luncheon was held on May 25 in the Weston Commons. The Asian Desi Pacific Islander Student Union has been an affinity club at Central Catholic since 2009. Student-driven with help from math teacher Steve Workman–who has been the group’s moderator since its inception more than ten years ago–this group was created to provide a safe space for students who want to learn more about and celebrate their heritage and culture.

similar things to us, and see how they moved through life during and after high school.” Affinity Lunches give alumni and students a safe space to gather for fellowship, connect with one another, and share stories. With these new opportunities, we hope the Central Catholic community will grow stronger, with alumni and students feeling more connected to one another. We look forward to hosting our next Affinity Luncheon in the fall, the Alumni and Student Latino Luncheon on Thursday, October 12, 2023.

Senior students introduced themselves and spoke about their plans for the future. Alumni shared what they experienced as students here at Central Catholic. They also shared their journey to where they are now and offered some advice to current students. Students benefited from learning from alumni and in return, alumni were inspired by the students and the community they have created. Attendee Wes Aguas ’06 shared about his time at the luncheon, “It was fantastic. It was great to see so many young minds getting together to celebrate their heritage.” When asked about the importance of the luncheon, attendee Junho Chang ’99 responded, “It’s important that students of color– especially historically underserved students–see alumni who share affinity and provide examples for how they can succeed in life.” Students echoed the alumni’s enthusiasm. Corinne Toyooka ’23 shared, “I think it helps us to see how lucky we are to have a space where so many people we have connections to can gather, and also to hear the experiences of people who may have gone through

MISSY MACK MEMORIAL GYM DEDICATION

Missy Mack ‘88 Memorial Gym Dedication On Sunday, May 7, we celebrated the naming of our main gym to honor the memory of Missy Mack ‘88, who died in a tragic car accident in 1986 during her sophomore year at Central Catholic. The naming of the gym as the Missy Mack ‘88 Memorial Gym was a dream made a reality thanks to the Mack family and more than 150 generous donors who supported the project, which encompasses an overall refresh of the space, a new video scoreboard, and updated championship banners.

The Celebration was well-attended by friends, family members, and alumni–in particular Missy’s classmates from the Class of 1988–who turned out en force. With remarks by Missy’s sisters, Renee (Mack) Baumgartner ‘83, Lara (Mack) Tennant ‘84 and Cappy Mack ‘89, and a dedication prayer by Msgr. Tim Murphy ‘58, the celebration was the perfect way to honor Missy’s memory and to highlight the strength and connectedness of the Central Catholic community.

Members of the Mack and McHugh families include, (from L to R,) Josie Fischer, George Mack, Jr. ’80, Jan McHugh, Lara Tennant ’84, Renee Baumgartner ’83, honorary family member Msgr. Tim Murphy ’58, and Cappy Mack ’89.

Alumni from the Class of 1988 enjoy catching up at the dedication of the Missy Mack ’88 Memorial Gym: (From L to R) Lori (Anctil) Bell, Mike Van Hoomissen, Paddy Ryan, Amy (Feller) Mehas, John Spolar, Sheila (Moran) Connelly, Michael Goodell, Bernadette (Breiling) Small, Cori (Foote) Gosse, Vic Rust, Gene Moreland, Tony Bell, Eric Anctil, and Dena (Gasiewski) Dooney

ALUMNI NEWS

Missy Mack Memorial Scholarship What’s Up With You? The Mack family has been part of Central Catholic High School since 1955, when George Mack, Sr. ’57 transferred here after Columbia Prep closed. In the years that followed, all of George’s children (George, Jr. ’80, Renee ’83, Lara ’84, Missy ’88, and Cappy ’89) and three of his grandchildren (Thomas Gray ’19, Christopher Gray ’21, and Madeline Gray ’23) also attended Central Catholic. Tragically, in June 1986, during her sophomore year, Missy died in a car accident, leaving her siblings, parents, and extended family–as well as her Central Catholic family–bereft.

Alexa (Johnson) Johnston ’08 and her husband, Alexander, welcomed twins Marin Lyra and Clara Wren on April 21, 2023.

Shortly after her death, the Mack family established The Missy Mack Memorial Scholarship. Jan McHugh, Missy’s mother, indicated the family wanted the scholarship awarded to a student with financial need, but also one who, like Missy, had excellent grades and a record of service to Central Catholic and the greater community. “Like Missy, these students should be compassionate and demonstrate love and respect towards their classmates,” she said.

Megan (Wallo) Renander ’09 and her husband, Eric, welcomed their second child, Knox William, on April 4, 2023. Knox joins big sister, Hunter Dee (3 years old).

An endowed scholarship is a wonderful way to create a lasting legacy at Central Catholic in honor of a loved one. If you would like to make a difference in the life of students, helping to provide them with the benefits of a Central Catholic education, call Ellie Dir in the Office of Advancement at 503.230.1056 ext. 1258.

Thank you Volunteers

There is no requirement for parents/guardians or Alumni to volunteer at Central Catholic, but when they do, they find they also become part of the mission and vision of Central Catholic. Each year, volunteers are asked to designate their volunteer hours towards a Central Catholic team or club. This allows the school to provide additional funding to teams and clubs whose supporters volunteer their time outside their own program. This funding is known as “The Point System.” During the 2022-2023 school year, 433 alumni, parents, and friends provided a total of 4,454 volunteer hours. The Point System, in turn, provided a total of $75,000 in funding to more than 80 teams and clubs–as well as Athletics, Student Life, The Parent Association, and The Alumni Association’s general funds.

In the 37 years since it was established, the Missy Mack Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to 38 students, all of whom are carrying Missy’s legacy forward. Some have returned to work at Central Catholic; all are doing great things in the world. In his speech at the 2023 Scholarship Luncheon, one recent recipient talked about opportunities that scholarships, including the Missy Mack Memorial Scholarship, had provided him. While at Central Catholic, he was given the chance to participate on Student Council, in sports, and in many other activities, including representing Central Catholic as the school’s mascot, “Rammy.”

Max Virnig ’09 and his wife, Kelsey, welcomed a daughter, Monroe Katherine, on February 22, 2023. She joins big sister, Millie (3 years old).

Cappy Mack ’89, thinks of the scholarship as “another opportunity for my children to learn about the aunt they never knew. This scholarship is a way for students to learn more about what it is like to be a part of the Ramily as well as learn about a person who had an impact on the Central Catholic community.”

How did Central Catholic help SHAPE the woman you are today?

Why are women IMPORTANT to Central Catholic?

“CCHS helped me to become a person of ethics and integrity, a critical thinker, a committed scholar and learner, and a conscientious professional and leader. As a resident of Vancouver who commuted to school every day, it also gave me a meaningful connection to the diverse community of Southeast Portland, where I have lived now for the past seven years, and where I am raising my son. CENTRAL CATHOLIC YEAR OF THE WOMAN

Celebrating 40 Years of Alumnae

We remember with particular fondness these Central Catholic Alumnae who left us far too soon. Holding them close in prayer and in our hearts, we bolster one another with memories of our classmates and the many happy school days together. Anna Hurley ’83 August 16, 2014

Correction: In the article “40 Years of Alumnae” in the Spring 2023 edition of the Central Catholic Magazine, we inadvertently left Vicki (Harms) Okazaki ‘84 off the list of members of the 1983 Girls’ State Championship Golf Team that appears on page six. Vicki was an integral part of the team and we apologize for our omission.
