This year, Central Catholic High School adopted the theme of “storytelling.” I love this idea because I believe that by sharing your story, you invite others to experience who you are in a deeper and more meaningful way. We gravitate toward stories because they are where we find connection and intersectionality. Stories help us understand ourselves better. Stories help us understand our place in the world and aid in shaping our perception of it. And stories help guide us through life by offering a link to where we come from and a way to share knowledge, morals, customs, and universal truths about ourselves and our world. Like individuals, organizations have their own stories to share. Central Catholic’s story is rich and deep, impacting the lives of its alumni, parents, faculty, and staff in profoundly meaningful ways. I hear time and time again the numerous ways “The school molded and shaped me into the person I am today.” Their experience at Central Catholic has become, well, central to who they are and how they choose to live their lives. Following the thread of Central Catholic’s unique story, this past spring we met with groups of individuals from all corners of the Central Catholic community: students, alumni (both older and younger), parents (past and present), faculty and staff, and we asked them, “What does Central Catholic mean to you?” The stories we heard were fantastic and heartfelt. We heard: “Central feels like a family–it literally is my family.” “Community is talked about elsewhere, but not felt as much as here.” “Central goes out of its way to get kids connected. No one is alone.” “Teachers are committed to the well-being and success of their students. They take the time to get to know every individual on a deep, personal level, and offer a hand to anyone needing help.” It is these feelings and experiences—these stories—that contribute to the sense of community that this School has fostered over the past 84

years. It is why so many alumni, or parents after their child graduates, remain involved and committed to the School. They continue to feel that they are a part of—and belong at—Central Catholic. This experience was an important reminder to me of a lesson I was taught by a friend who was an incredible author and storyteller, Brian Doyle, who was editor of the University of Portland’s magazine Portland. I once asked him how he came up with all the wonderful stories he wrote about. His answer was simple, “Stop and listen.” In that answer he affirmed what is often overlooked as the other critical aspect of storytelling: story-listening. Being present, interested, and open to the stories of others, both individuals–and yes, schools–is something at which I continue to work. Often, we are so eager to share our own story, our own perspective, our own belief that we forget to story-listen. It can be much harder to be open and listen to others. But when we do, it is so rewarding. The opportunity last year to bring community members together gave us the unique opportunity to practice story-listening to strengthen our story-telling. The opportunity to listen to many members of the Central Catholic community tell their stories about what their experience has meant to them, deepened my own understanding and appreciation of the impact this School has—and will have—on the lives of our students now and long into their futures. This year, in keeping with our theme of storytelling (and story-listening), we’ll continue to share our stories in this issue of our magazine, and in issues to come. The stories at the heart of this issue of Central Catholic Magazine, our annual report issue, are about generosity and inspiration, which reminds me of another lesson I learned from Brian Doyle: “All stories are, in some form, prayers.” And with that, I’ll conclude by offering my prayers for you and your families–and my sincere thanks for your prayers and generous support of our School. Sincerely Yours, Colin McGinty President

YOUR GIFT MATTERS

From left to right: Austin Hill ’18, Peyton Hill Donnelly ’14, Gregg Donnelly, Gina Hill, and Elliott Hill celebrate Peyton and Gregg’s wedding

Donor Profile: Elliott and Gina Hill In early 2021, during the height of the pandemic, Gina and Elliott Hill had an idea for an endowed fund. Sparked by a marathon day of attic cleaning where they attempted to inventory a GIGANTIC collection of sports memorabilia accumulated during Elliott’s 32-year career at Nike, the idea blossomed and took root over the next 18 months, bringing with it a sports memorabilia auction, and a $750,000 challenge match opportunity with a December 31, 2022 deadline. Embedded within the first challenge, however, came a second challenge from an anonymous donor, a $750,000 challenge with the hair-raising deadline of December 10, 2022. With the generous support of more than 100 benefactors, both challenges were achieved, with the end result being a $2.25M endowment, named for Gina’s mother and benefiting students from St. Andrew Nativity School who want to attend Central Catholic High School.

and during that time we were introduced to Msgr. Murphy, and learned about Central Catholic. The east side of town resonated with us and Central Catholic did as well. Both Elliott and I came from public school backgrounds. I never thought we would have gone the private route, but it made sense with what was going on in the economy and where we lived. It was community first that brought us into All Saints and then carried over to Central Catholic. I’m a Grant High General, and proud of it, but Central Catholic was above and beyond a more appropriate option at the time, from our perspective. It was the first choice of our kids, and our first choice.

We caught up with the Hills to talk to them about the Candace Newland Holley Endowment, about community, education, philanthropy, and Central Catholic. Recently relocated to Austin, Texas, the Hills are parents to two Central Catholic alumni: Peyton ’14 and Austin ’18.

EH: The only thing I’d add, just to summarize, was that the community piece was critically important. Academic rigor, excellence, and then the extracurricular activities, all were really important. When we went to the Central Catholic Open house, John Harrington, who was then the President, literally said, “It would be our privilege to have your children at our school.” When we walked out, we just looked at each other. We couldn’t believe it. There’s a humbleness and a humility and a commitment to serving these students that really resonated with us.

CC: Gina and Elliott, thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us today. We’ll get to the Candace Newland Holley Endowment in a moment, but to kick off our conversation, can you tell us why you decided to send your kids to Central Catholic?

GH: I will also say, something that was really important to us, because we both grew up in diverse neighborhoods, was diversity. Racial and socio-economic diversity. Authentic diversity. Kids coming from all over the city to one location.

GH: It started with All Saints. We had moved back to Portland and were looking for a place for us and for our kids, a place that had a community that was really involved, that offered all the extracurriculars that we were hoping for, and had the academic rigor. We found that at All Saints

EH: When we speak of community, at least to me, it means involvement. Involvement from the administration, the students, teachers, alumni, and parents; all with a shared vision of what they’re trying to create with their school.

YOUR GIFT MATTERS CC: So, Gina, you were the first female board president at Central Catholic High School. What did you find fulfilling about being on our board?

GH: Actually, the first time I got involved was when someone reached out to me because she knew my involvement with Nike, and my connection with Elliott.

GH: Having a voice and being able to help shape what Central Catholic meant outside of the Ramily, so to speak, and just trying to spread the good word. I know Monsignor is always saying “Be humble, be humble.” Well, yeah, but we can also celebrate it. You know. It’s okay. Every once in a while, we can tell people about all the good that Central Catholic does and is.

She asked, “Hey, we need some help with uniforms at St. Andrew Nativity. Do you think you could see if there’s a way you could get help from Nike?”

CC: So, Elliott, we know you’re on some corporate boards, but I’m thinking mostly of the non-profit boards and the work you’re doing in that sector. Your alma mater, Texas Christian University (TCU) is one. What else are you doing in your spare time, now that you’re “retired.”

It was the St. Andrew Nativity cross country team and we all remember our changing bodies in middle school, right? These boys were nervous about these short-shorts, these hand-me-down short shorts that were really short and the wrong color. I came from a merchandising background and Elliott had the connections to help.

EH: I helped start a foundation here in Austin that supports the Travis County Parks System. Austin sits in Travis County. Very long story short, I spent most of my childhood in a park where a mentor there became a friend for life. He’s now the number-two person for Travis County Parks. When I came home, he asked if I would help start the foundation and I said yes. We started it from scratch, and we’re creating awareness, enhancing what already exists, and creating support for the park system. We have 27 parks, encompassing 11,000 acres. I spend a lot of time on it, as Gina will tell you, and it’s been another passion project; a way for me to give back to a system that really helped shape me as a child. And again, Gina and I, throughout our lives, we’ve tried to give back to two areas: education and sports, sports in the broadest sense. Those are the areas where we try to spend our time and to give. it is the reason we did what we did with Central Catholic, not only in terms of while we were there but with the Candace Newland Holley Endowment. It was a way for us to give back and to create opportunities for kids. CC: You’ve been supporting Central Catholic for the last fifteen years with annual gifts, capital gifts, the auction, and so on. Do you have a rule of thumb or a philosophy that guides your philanthropy? EH: This has been an explicit conversation Gina and I have had, about what’s important to us, and I’ll repeat it for you. Education is critically important to us, not only because we were raised by two educators; that is part of it. But we also see the value in what education brings to society, how it helps lift people up. And then the second one is the idea of wellness and sports and fitness and moving and the importance that plays in a healthy mind and a healthy body. Those are the two areas in which we’ve chosen to invest, not only money, but our time, our talent, and our experiences. GH: Another thing is impact. We get asked to donate to a lot of different places, and we were giving a little here and a little there, not really making much of an impact. So, we thought, “Let’s focus in on what is really important to us and make a bigger impact.” We’re trying to make a bigger impact in a smaller group of nonprofits. EH: Also, one other philosophy is, we try to invest locally. We prefer to give in our own backyard, at our local level, so All Saints and Central Catholic became a big part of our giving from an education perspective. CC: Can you tell us a little bit about how you got involved at St. Andrew Nativity and what you found compelling about that mission? Your face just lit up, Gina, at the mention of St. Andrew Nativity.

They had been wearing hand-me-down uniforms, which were the wrong color because they couldn’t afford anything else.

And I thought, “Hold on a second, we can get them new uniforms.” There were 20 or 30 kids, so Elliott and I decided to take that on. We ordered them and got them involved with the team dealer. We personally paid for them because we wanted to help. That was my first introduction to St. Andrew Nativity and…. CC: The rest is history. EH: Well, I think you quickly see, going back to the importance of education, the Nativity school model, they take kids and they bring them in and give them the structure and the level of rigor, educational rigor and by the time they leave, they’re not only at or above grade level, they’re prepared to go on and be successful. Clearly, they have a tremendous success rate, not just from graduating from high school, but graduating from college. What really gets you hooked is the success that those kids have. There’s a track record there. Hey, this program works! You don’t have to look any further than Raphiel Lambert [current Central Catholic counselor]. He was one of the first kids we met. You look at Raphiel and you go okay, of course, that’s where we want to invest our time and our energy and our money. GH: The kids were the most impressive. The first school tour that I took, a sixth grader was taking me around and talking about the projects that were happening and about the classroom interaction and this and that. I came out of that tour going, “Wow! Those kids are so impressive. They want to be there. They also know there’s so much potential. It’s really enlightening to see.” EH: We’d go to the [St. Andrew Nativity] auctions and luncheons etc., and we knew we wanted Central Catholic to be involved. We didn’t want these kids to have to take two or three buses to get to the other side of town. We wanted them to be able to choose Central Catholic. And we sort of parked that idea and nothing really happened with it. Then fast forward to two summers ago, when we were cleaning out the attic at our house and we brought all this stuff (sports memorabilia) down from the attic and it kept coming and kept coming and kept coming. We were asking ourselves, “What the hell are we going to do with all this? And you don’t want to just give it away, so okay. We can sell it, but let’s give it to a good cause. Well, let’s create a scholarship. And that’s really been the journey and it kept going from there. CC: And the momentum continued to build.

Annual Report | 5

YOUR GIFT MATTERS EH: Those moments where we saw the support that other schools offered at St. Andrew Nativity, and we wanted Central Catholic to be able to offer that level of support, coinciding with this moment when we were ready to let go of this part of our past, all this sports memorabilia. Instead of just getting rid of it and putting money in our bank account, we just decided to do something good with it. We just connected the dots. GH: I remember, going back to St. Andrew Nativity, at a board retreat we had, where current students and a couple of graduates came in to talk with us. I asked one of the students who was at Central Catholic about her experience. She said, “We all wanted to go to Central Catholic but there just wasn’t the support financially. You know, we felt more comfortable at Central Catholic. There were people that looked like us, it was closer to our homes. It was everybody coming together into this beautiful melting pot of students.” That’s when we knew. Obviously, it takes more money to support more students. That was our light bulb moment. EH: We were inspired to find a way to get more St. Andrew Nativity kids at Central Catholic because we believed ultimately, that Central Catholic had something to offer those kids and we believed that those kids made Central Catholic better. CC: Can you share some of your favorite memories from when your kids were here? GH: I think one of my favorite memories of when Austin was a student, was when the CC track team ran at the state track meet. They finished second (in the Men’s team points) but they won and also set a school record in the four-by-four. EH: It was the last race at Hayward Field and then they tore it down and built the new one. We won, CC won the last high school meet ever run on the old Hayward Field. When it came down to it, we thought we might win the State Championship but we didn’t. We lost by just a few points because one of our athletes got injured. But, it was a fun track meet and it was in Eugene, and at Hayward Field, which meant so much to us as a family, with Nike and Bill Bowerman and Gina’s grandfather

6 | Central Catholic Magazine

(Bob Newland), who used to coach at Hayward Field. Anyway, I would probably put that up there as one of my favorite memories. CC: What a highlight! EH: Even the simple things, like going to school Masses were always special. The graduations were special. The night before the graduation, and the Baccalaureate Mass, for me, was always meaningful. And just the idea of having, not all at one time, but our two kids, and our three nephews there was so fun, so unique. And I loved Camp Rilea! GH: LOVED Camp Rilea!! EH: Feeding the boys before the football games was always super fun. EH: The only thing I would add, is the friendships that our kids and our nephews created at Central brought a lot of great memories. Those are the day-to-day memories, those long-standing relationships that last even to this day. Our daughter was married earlier this summer and there were Central Catholic grads there. It’s those friendships that form great memories of the day-to-day. CC: You know, when they have their sixtieth reunion, those friendships will still be there. We see that at our reunions and with our older alumni. It’s really wonderful to see. Congratulations, Gina and Elliott. What a great life you’ve built and what a huge impact you’ve had on many, many students, through the Candace Newland Holley Endowment and through the other gifts you’ve shared with Central Catholic. Thank you for all you have done for us and for leaving a legacy that will impact thousands of future students! EH: It’s a privilege and we’ve been incredibly fortunate. We feel like it is our responsibility to give back and to share. Not just financially, but with some of the experiences we’ve been able to have. It’s a real privilege.

Mike ’75 and Cheryl Cebula are nothing if not intentional. After completing their estate planning process, the first thing they did was to notify us that they had included Central Catholic in their estate plans.

Annual Ramily Christmas Week of Giving December 11-15, 2023

Now, as new members of the Central Catholic High School Legacy Society, they encourage anyone engaged in the estate planning process to be sure to let recipient organizations know of their intentions. “By letting organizations know what you have planned,” Cheryl says, “you give that organization the opportunity to plan better, to forecast for the future.”

Join us this Advent season in giving generously to our community and celebrating Central Catholic’s commitment to being people for others.

And, not only did they let us know how their estate gift was set up– through their Individual Retirement Account (IRA)–they also let us know where they wanted it directed, which in their case, is to The Cebula Family Scholarship. The Cebulas learned the importance of this through their direct experience. As Mike told us, “When my parents died, they left money to a number of organizations, but they didn’t identify how the funds were to be used. It became the responsibility of my siblings and me to decide how to direct these gifts. It took multiple conversations, but we finally were able to come to an agreement. When Cheryl and I pass, however, we don’t want anyone to have to debate how our legacy is going to be decided.” Something else the Cebulas learned was to “do your homework,” and they spent a considerable amount of time doing due diligence on potential recipient organizations. Cheryl says to “really check out and research the organizations where you might want to give. Think about the values that you want to convey as part of your legacy. I would just caution people to really check out the organization, to make sure you’re comfortable with your name being associated with that organization AND that you would like your money to continue to support them long after you’re gone.” Mike and Cheryl chose Central Catholic as one of their bequest recipients because they know and appreciate the benefits of a Central Catholic education. We are forever grateful to Mike and Cheryl Cebula and all our Legacy Society members for their intentionality, their foresight, and their generosity. Not only have they made it easier for us to effectively plan and forecast for the future, they have allowed us the opportunity to express our gratitude in the present.

A new scholarship is established when the individual fund balance reaches or exceeds a principal balance of $25,000 and has accrued interest for a minimum of one year. Only a portion of the interest earned on the principal amount is used annually for scholarships, which allows annual awards to continue in perpetuity. We offer our heartfelt thanks to all who have made contributions to Central Catholic High School over the past fiscal year, both financial and in-kind. We would not be the school we are without you. Thank you for all the ways you contribute, for the role you play in the Central Catholic tradition, and for ensuring our mission continues today and into the future. Alumni Association Update

The past fiscal year was a very busy and successful one for Central Catholic’s Alumni Association and Alumni Board! •

The Board now has nine members: outgoing President, John Leineweber ’99; incoming President, Will Paustian ’15; Board Secretary, Christina Kempster ’09; Board Treasurer, Ed Curtin ’68; Matt Illias ’05; Mary Beth Pinder ’85; Aimee (Van Beek) Virnig ’83; Kevin Tyner ’02; and Jack Schwab ’69.

The Ram Open was held on August 5, 2022, at Glendoveer Golf and Tennis with foursomes enjoying the day and helping raise over $15,000 for the The Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship.

The classes of 1952, 1962, 1972, and 1982—plus all of the classes from the 1940s— celebrated their reunions in the Weston Commons with Mass, food and drink, photos, and tours on August 6, 2022.

The Oktoberfest Marketplace was held on September 24, 2022 attracting a great crowd, with over 38 food, clothing, and arts and crafts vendors.

The 2022 Women’s Wine Tour on October 8, 2022 was sold-out at 60 attendees who tasted at two different wineries and had lunch on a beautiful fall day in Hood River.

The 2022 Homecoming Tailgater on October 21, 2022 welcomed a sold-out crowd at McMenamins Cornelius Pass Roadhouse before the Rams vs. Cavaliers football game.

The 2022 Hall of Fame inducted 13 new members on October 23, 2022: Martenne Bettendorf ’12; The Boys 2005 Cross Country Team; Steve Halligan, Pat Harrington ’68; The David Heller Family Foundation; Kaitlin Inglesby ’10; Tony Leineweber ’62; Captain Richard Mallon ’60; Ian Montone ’85; Jane Murphy; Michael Rosenbaum ’68; Brennan Scarlett ’11; and Scott Williams ’87.

During the Week of Giving, in December 2022, we welcomed alumni who volunteered and helped collect food, gifts, blankets, coats, and socks for local community members in need.

February 2023 kicked off our Alumni Scholarship campaign and engaged 32 young alumni donors who gave $2,354 to the The Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship.

We welcomed alumni to campus on February 3, 2023 with concessions and a 50/50 raffle to cheer on the Central Catholic men and women’s basketball teams.

Our first Affinity Luncheon, the Alumni and Student Black Affinity Lunch, was held on February 9, 2023. Alumni and students connected with one another and shared advice and common experiences. The second luncheon, the Alumni and Student Asian Desi Pacific Islander and Arab luncheon was held on May 25, 2023 and was also a huge success.

The Presidents’ Dinner and Auction on April 30, 2023 welcomed alumni back into the building to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of co-ed education at Central Catholic and to raise much-needed funds for tuition assistance.

The Alumni Board welcomed the Class of 2023 to the Alumni Association with a gift. Each graduate received a CC logo laundry bag on June 9, 2023.

If you would like to get more involved with the Alumni Association or Alumni Board, contact Sara Wright, Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement at swright@centralcatholichigh.org or 503.230.1056 x1243 The mission of the Central Catholic Alumni Board is to foster Ram pride through strengthening connections, unity, and involvement among the alumni association. We seek to cultivate ties between the alumni, school, and community through events and community service.

Graham Neuburger ‘02 and wife Nicole welcomed a son, Knox Nike, on January 28, 2023. He joins big brothers Noah (4) and Nash (2). Katie (Lesseg) Colhoff ’03 recently received not one, but two 40 Under 40 honors! Katie was recognized as Portland Business Journal’s and the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy 2023 40 Under 40 for her work as the Executive Director of Donor Engagement at Providence Oregon. Congratulations Katie! This summer, Becky (Lulay) Miller ‘03 became a published author with her children’s book, The Three Little Pigs Build Their Houses With Mommy Pig. It is a cute retelling of the classic story, but with Mommy Pig joining her little pigs at the hardware store to guide them in choosing the best materials in order to stay safe from the wind, the rain, and the occasional Big Bad Wolf. “It’s one of my kids’ favorites growing up and a great book for preschool through elementary that encourages critical thinking, family bonds, and a lot of fun,” reports Becky. She adds, “I currently have more stories in the works and hope to get them published soon. You can find my current book on Amazon or ask your favorite bookstore or librarian for it.” @ beckymillerbooks or BeckyMillerBooks.com. Katie Moran ‘08 married Sam Hanske at Camp Colton in Molalla on June 10, 2023.

Joe Marziello ‘10 and wife Ally welcomed twins, Tate Jaxson and Brodie Tyler on August 13, 2023. Cheyne Corrado ’11 married Cole Pickavance on October 21, 2023 at Abbey Road Farm in Carlton.

Ram pride was shining at the 2023 Ram Open at Glendoveer Golf and Tennis on August 4, 2023! The full course of Central Catholic alumni, parents, and friends had a sunny day of play, sharing stories and laughs along the way. New challenges were introduced, and golfers had the opportunity to sample libations at the “Taste At The Turn,” a new sponsorship opportunity this year, from 503 Distilling. Most of the drinks on the carts were donated, so more of the proceeds from the day could benefit the Alumni Association Scholarship. A spirited celebratory barbeque and awards ceremony concluded this special day! Congratulations to the Flight Winners and a special thank you to all of our sponsors and especially our presenting sponsor, Pacific Office Automation!

Reunions The classes of 1953, 1963, 1973, 1983, and the classes from the 1940s celebrated their reunions in the Weston Commons on August 5, 2023. Central Catholic hosts these marquee reunions with food, drink, and photos. Much joy was spread with classmates reminiscing about the old times and catching up with one another. Msgr. Murphy ‘58 led the group in prayer and on tours of the school. Some alumni had not been back in the building for over 30 years! They were impressed to see all of the positive changes, but also happy to see so many of the nostalgic elements were still intact. If you would like to plan a reunion that is not in the marquee years of 40, 50, 60, or 70+, please contact Sara Wright, Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement at swright@centralcatholichigh.org for more information. We hope you continue to gather with your Ramily!
