Letter from the President I recently read the following quote from St. Thomas Aquinas: “There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship.” True friendship. It made me stop and really ponder the truth of this statement. Is there really nothing more prized in our lives than our true friends? Not the people we just see from time to time or with whom we shared fun moments, but true friends: a spouse, a parent, a child, a neighbor, a classmate, and yes, God. Those individuals who accompany us on our journey and share our lives; those are the ones who truly give meaning to our lives. Tonight I was fortunate to be part of a celebration that recognized Rick Lorenz, a man who has committed 31 years of his life to Central Catholic as a dedicated volleyball coach and teacher. In a packed gym, we enjoyed a Ram victory and then gathered in the Weston Commons post-game to celebrate his many decades of commitment and to recognize his many achievements. This, after all, is the way a person with such dedication should be recognized and thanked. But, as I continued to greet people and thank them for being here, I began to really see the deep impact an individual can have on the lives of others, and the true friendships that can develop. Rick was surrounded by hundreds of true friends: former student-athletes, parents of former studentathletes, parents of current student-athletes, current co-workers, former co-workers, current student-athletes, other alumni, and of course, many, many other friends. It was an incredible night, it was a well-deserved night, but the very visible and most sincere of friendships is what I will always remember. Since our doors opened 80 years ago, Central Catholic has developed students to be people of character. The school has produced alumni who went on to impact our community in deep and meaningful ways. Our alumni are entrepreneurs, doctors and nurses, lawyers and judges. They are educators, priests, and accountants. Central Catholic alumni pursue and excel in any number of professional fields, and do so grounded in the foundation they received while students at this very special school; a foundation that highlights the importance of faith, honesty, responsibility, and courage. Our graduates understand that it is not enough simply to be successful, but success must be measured by the impact made on the lives of others. It is this impact on others that I see every day, and it is what I witnessed at tonight’s celebration. These relationships, or as St. Thomas Aquinas said, these “true friendships,” have grown to create a very special community, one we proudly call “a Central Catholic community.” Gratefully, Colin McGinty President 2 | Central Catholic Magazine

Tom Gilles ’57: Why I Give Monthly

A caption in the 1957 edition of the Scepter describes Advertising co-Chairmen Tom Gilles ’57 and the late Jim Montgomery ‘57 as follows: “These boys spent many long hours telephoning and contacting prospective clients in order that the goal might be reached for the advertising budget.” This focus, persistence, and solid work ethic would come to serve Tom well in future years. Following his graduation from Central Catholic, he joined the Army for a three-year stint, 18 months of which found him stationed in Okinawa serving as a Morse Code Operator. Upon his discharge, Tom went to work for United Airlines at Portland International Airport and after marrying Karon, a Los Angeles native, in 1990, he transferred to the airport in Burbank, CA. Ultimately, Tom had a 40-year career with United Airlines, retiring in 2002. Tom and Karon began supporting Central Catholic more than 25 years ago, and for the past ten years, have chosen to give on a monthly basis. Tom says, “We planned for it. Our monthly gift is one way we can help Central Catholic create a more predictable cash flow. Overall, being a recurring monthly donor helps Central Catholic be more effective in their mission to educate young people.” We are grateful to generous, thoughtful supporters like Tom ’57 and Karon Gilles who choose to give back to Central Catholic on a recurring monthly basis. It is easy and convenient, whether you choose to give via credit card or direct debit (EFT). We encourage anyone who would like to set up a recurring gift to contact Elaine Payne by e-mail at epayne@centralcatholichigh.org or phone at 503.230.1056 ext. 1443.

Thank You to Our Lead Gift Volunteers

New name and look. Same fundraiser! The Annual Appeal is now the Central Catholic Fund. With the rebranding and updating of our Annual Appeal model, new technological trends and the manner in which people use their phones these days, we have opted to discontinue our lead gift phone call program. We want to acknowledge those who, year in and year out, took the time for phone and email outreach to their friends and classmates, encouraging them to contribute to Central Catholic. Your efforts have made a difference and we are so grateful. At its peak, this committee numbered 50 members. These dedicated volunteers deserve credit for growing our Annual Appeal from $237,448 in 1995, to a robust $1.7 million in revenue this past year. Deserving special acknowledgement for this impressive growth are the first five committee members: Jim Corso ‘67, Jim Dooney ‘58, Msgr. Tim Murphy ‘58, John Shepard, and Dennis Moyer ‘63. Thank you again to each and every one of our hardworking volunteers. May God richly bless you!

I am being called as a servant leader. I know that being the principal of Central Catholic is an incredible responsibility and honor. I work to be a humble leader, knowing that I am far from perfect and I will make mistakes. It is with a humble heart that I will own those mistakes and work to always put what is best for Central Catholic at the forefront of every decision. I am grateful for the trust others have put in me as the principal of the school and I believe integrity motivates me to be hardworking and to communicate openly and honestly in all that I do.

PRINCIPAL

Danyelle Ramsey Central Catholic High School has a new principal at the helm. Danyelle Ramsey officially took her post in July and began working diligently with her leadership team to prepare the school for a successful year. Danyelle is not a newcomer to the Central Catholic community; she has been at the school for the last 15 years, first as a religion teacher and later as the Assistant Principal of Campus Ministry. Before the school year started, we talked to Principal Ramsey about why she entered the education field and what excites her about her new role as principal. Central Catholic Magazine (CCM): What drew you to education and being an administrator? Danyelle Ramsey (DR): I started my career as a teacher when I was seven years old and the oldest of six girl cousins. I was always the teacher in the school room that we would create at my grandma’s house. I was sure from an early age that I would be a teacher. My years at the University 4 | Central Catholic Magazine

of Portland (UP) formed my educational philosophy, continuing to build on the foundation my parents set in me as a person of faith and character. When it was time for me to do my student teaching, I remember feeling like I had not learned enough to be ready for the classroom. I decided to postpone student teaching and spend a year learning reading strategies and getting my special education endorsement. It was in these classes and experiences that I fully developed as an educator and I was ready to student teach by my fifth year at UP. Once I was in the classroom, I was hooked! I have been in Catholic education ever since. CCM: What are three traits that define you? DR: Faith, humility, and integrity are three traits that define me. My faith is at the center of my being. I pray often and always. The grace of God works in my life and helps me to know how and where

CCM: What are you most excited about as you take on this new role? DR: I am most excited about carrying on Central Catholic’s long tradition of providing a Catholic education for all students. The robust educational opportunities that we provide in an inclusive and supportive community are incredible and truly allow students to become the best version of themselves. I am excited to partner with our faculty, staff, and parents in helping our students develop critical thinking skills so they can make decisions that are rooted in equity. I am excited for the future of the world because I believe our students leave Central Catholic prepared for where their gifts meet the world and this gives me hope. CCM: What advice would you give your high school self? DR: The advice I would give to my high school self is to realize that I am loved as I am. Once I discovered I did not have to do anything special or be anyone special to be worthy of God’s love and the love of others, I was able to just be. In high school, this would have saved me a lot of worry, stress, and time spent trying to be something I was not, to please others. There is so much pressure in high school to achieve a certain grade, social status, or get into the right college. My hope for our students is for them to know every day that they are loved just for being who they are!

Rambassadors are “the face of Central Catholic.” Students apply for this position and represent the student body at Open House, grade school visits, and with our eighth grade visitors here on campus. On the Rambassador application this year, we asked students to tell us about a person who exemplifies the spirit of the RAMILY to them. The answers we received so thoughtfully captured the spirit of our community, we wanted to share some of them with you.

Bella Del Bosque ’22 (L): “When I think of the spirit of the Ramily, I think of love, kindness, welcoming, compassion, and empathy. Mrs. Gianotti holds all of those traits. The amount of love she has for each and every person she meets is inspiring.”

Dominic Phan ’20 (R): “Mr. Kreiter’s spirit and positive energy carries around the school. He does so many things for the community: running Latino Student Union, playing music for the school Mass, and he is always here for anyone who needs to talk. He is one of the kindest souls at Central and shows what the school stands for.”

Ava McDonald ’22 (L): “Katie Stolberg’s attitude and positivity bring brightness to stressful days. Although she juggles extracurriculars with everyday homework, she does not let the stress affect her and her dedication to her friends and classmates. Every high school student could learn positivity, stress management, and flexibility from Katie. Her involvement in the community and dedication to her friends and classmates represents what it means to be a Ram.”

Sam Duncan-Doroff ’21(L): “I can truly say, that there has not been a single day when I have passed by Marduke Shahbaz Jorrin in the halls, or I walked into class and seen Marduke at his seat when he hasn’t had a smile across his face. Marduke is someone that has an undeniable and incredibly impressive work ethic that manifests itself throughout all aspects of the things he is involved. ”

Olivia Johnson ’21(R): “The spirit of the Ramily includes someone who lives their life with humble confidence, demonstrates an exceptional work ethic, and provides joy and comfort to others. I am fortunate in my life to be close to someone who embodies this message. She makes my life better and teaches me how to be a strong, kind, and intelligent woman. This person is Ally Sacamano.”

Lexi Lee ’22 (L): “Joey Angelo’s kind heart and willingness to put others before himself allows him to embody the spirit of the Ramily. Throughout the school year, I have not encountered a student that exhibits more selflessness, generosity, and respect than Joey.”

Ian Hermanson ’20 (R): “Mateo Lennertz is my definition of a true member of the Ramily. A Ram is welcoming to anyone and encourages the expression of a friend’s true self. A Ram is very wellrounded and jumps into new activities eagerly. A Ram is dedicated to their talents and activities and contributes to their community. Mateo is a true Central Catholic Ram.”

Isabella Buxton ’20 (R): “When I think of Ram pride, I immediately think of Ms. Pinder because she constantly proves she is the most enthusiastic teacher, motivator, and overall, an influential person for students to learn from and to be able to go to. She is the type of teacher who not only cares about her job, but the community.”

Gia Hanselman ’20 (L): Central Catholic is a place where kindness to others is a key value, and Ethan Flynn’s friendliness toward me and to everyone exemplifies that aspect of Central Catholic. He epitomizes the Central Catholic mission by being an enthusiastic and kind person to everyone. He acts and treats people the way Central Catholic treats its students. Ethan lifts them up and motivates people.

Josh Cisneros ’22 (R): “Ms. Moore illustrates the Ramily spirit through her true care for the community. Inside the classroom, Ms. Moore is a great teacher who is patient and kind with her students. She has encouraged and taught me to help other students.”

Jasmyn DeClue ’20 (R): “When I think of Ramily, I think of a community of diversity and differences that are acknowledged and appreciated. Miya Klein is just that; she is very welcoming and kind to all the people who meet her.”

CCM: If your kids were to summarize their years here, what do you think they would say? NJ: One of our biggest takeaways was that the kids were really happy here. They both made very close friends. They both felt accepted and engaged. They really grew here. I felt like they were surrounded by a very close-knit community. Even if it wasn’t the community they grew up in, they became a part of it and that has enduring value for them.

Meg Remsen and Nigel Jaquiss We recently sat down to talk with Nigel Jaquiss and Meg Remsen, the parents of two recent Central Catholic grads (Nell ’19 and Ry ’17). As past parents and supporters of Central Catholic, we were interested in hearing about their children’s experiences here, their thoughts on our school community, and what motivated them to support Central Catholic. Enjoy! [Edited for space and clarity.] Central Catholic Magazine (CCM): Why did you decide to send your children to Central Catholic? MR: All three of our children went to Waldorf School through eighth grade. They had been used to a smaller environment, with twenty to thirty kids in their grade all through eighth grade, so we felt like them jumping into a public school would be too big a leap for them. We had been coming to girls’ basketball games here when they were younger. The team was very strong then. They always admired the school and wanted to go here. Especially the younger two. When they came to visit, each of them came home from their shadow day saying, “Oh, I want to go there. We don’t need to look anywhere else.” They just immediately felt comfortable with the environment and the people. They said everyone was really nice. MR: I wanted them to be in a class of 20-25 kids and not 40. I wanted them to be at a place where they could look around and see kids who were engaged and doing their homework and were participating in discussions in class. Also, the classes were small enough that they could get to know their teachers and have a relationship with them. 8 | Central Catholic Magazine

As kids get older they look outside of the family to find mentors or people to admire and look up to. I think there were a lot of teachers here, especially a lot of English and Spanish teachers whose classes they really enjoyed. I know Ms. Branscum, Ms. Quigley, Ms. Danek, and Ms. Moore were all favorites. They both also had Mr. Mullady as freshmen. I think freshmen are nervous and they aren’t sure they are going to fit in, and we aren’t Catholic. There are so many kids who come in knowing each other from Catholic feeder schools. I think someone like him really put them at ease. He has a good sense of humor. He’s really into basketball, as are both of them. He’s a very good teacher and he made it easier for them to transition here. NJ: I remember Ry coming home and saying, “Mr. Ward is really smart.” He was impressed with how smart he was. Our kids had relatively little exposure to Catholicism. Nell had Mr. McMonagle and I think he made what can be a little dry and inaccessible at times − fun. Which is important. I think it’s great when kids get exposed to things they haven’t been exposed to before. It seems like those teachers understood that not everyone comes with a grounding in Catholicism. MR: Even though we are not Catholic, it was important to have time in class and with their peers and a teacher to reflect on their values and what’s important to them and who they want to be in life. They came from a background where their intellectual and spiritual life and their artistic and creative life were met and I wanted to make sure that that continued.

MR: I would just add that they felt comfortable immediately here when they shadowed. They knew. “This is it. This is where I want to be. I see myself here.” It’s going to make me teary, but there was like this sense of spirit here that is maybe lacking in some public schools. But I feel like the school set the standards and expectations that were obvious to them and they could choose when they were ready to meet them. MR: I also think there is a culture of acceptance and sense of community that is so important for kids these days. They are exposed to so much on their phones and it’s hard for them to weed through what’s okay and what’s not okay, and who they want to be when they get older. Do they want to be this fancy lady who always has everyone’s attention or do they want to be a really good human being, someone who cares about others and is kind? CCM: Why do you choose to support Central Catholic financially? MR: The first word that comes to my mind is diversity. We live in a very white city. I feel like Central Catholic is a way more diverse environment than they’ve ever been in. They’ve had exposure here to kids who are different than they are. I think that’s really important in a classroom to hear different perspectives. And they benefitted greatly from that and from friendships. NJ: Giving is part of encouraging diversity; and accessibility and diversity are closely linked. I think we saw a real value in the education that our kids got here, so, to the extent that we can help make it available to others, that’s a really positive feeling. I think the kids who leave this building are going to be important in all kinds of ways in our community. We want to try to make this accessible to other kids. Create your Legacy Why do you feel it is important to support Catholic education? The students get a lot more out of their school years. They get more attention, they get more opportunities, they’re more challenged. They come out more well-rounded and ready to go in the world. Central Catholic is close to our hearts. Why has it been important to stay so connected with David’s high school alma mater over the years? Because David loves it. Because of the wonderful people at Central Catholic. Because of the students. When we go back there, the students are just wonderful. They step up and talk. They’re all so positive and enthusiastic. -David ’62 and Marlene Guasco

Include Central Catholic in your will or trust today and make a powerful impact on tomorrow’s students. Including Central Catholic in your long term financial plan allows you to: • Make a significant gift without affecting your current income • Provide a charitable tax deduction for your estate • Ensure the best possible education and opportunities for future generations Legacy Society members David ’62 and Marlene Guasco with granddaughter, Sophia, after her ballet performance.

SPOTLIGHT SCHOLARSHIP:

Class of 1971 Scholarship The May 7, 1971, issue of The Rampart has a supplement devoted solely to the seniors in the Class of 1971. The headline shouts: Spirit of 71 Thrives Four Years! Subheads on following pages are more reflective: 1967-1971: Years of Spirit, Years of Maturity, Days of Struggle, Days of Truth.

These headlines summarize the personality of Central Catholic’s Class of 1971. Like many at Central Catholic, the Class of 1971 is very tight-knit. Rick Grbavac ’71, a student at Central Catholic during the years when more than 1,000 boys roamed the hallways says, “Our class was always close, with a lot of school spirit. We even had our own newspaper, the Spirit of 71, and we organized a school spirit week. The stuff we did,” he says with a chuckle, “we probably couldn’t get away with today.” One of his best memories is being part of the cheerleading squad after his senior football season ended. Young women from other area high schools would try out for the Ram cheerleading squad (to even out the gender balance). He says, “They were all really good looking. In fact, I married one of them, Debbie Zarosinski from Marycrest High School. We’ve now been married for 43 years and we’ve had four children go through Central Catholic, graduating in 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2005.” Like many of the classes at Central Catholic, this group socializes on a regular basis. At a recent gathering, the conversation shifted to a more pensive tone and they began counting the number of classmates who had passed away since they graduated. Realizing that more than 20 were deceased led to a reflection on their own mortality and more conversation on how Central Catholic had laid the foundation for fulfilling lives, careers, and relationships. Ultimately, the group decided to begin the process of endowing a Class of 1971 Scholarship. The Central Catholic endowment plays a crucial role in the Central Catholic High School funding model. Of the roughly 100 named funds comprising the endowment, 11 are class scholarships. Most exist to offset the cost of tuition for current families, but several help fund the school’s operations. Another supports Central Catholic’s Rams Program for students with developmental or intellectual differences. “We wanted a way to say thank you to Central Catholic,” Grbavac says. “It gave us so much. My kids went to Central Catholic. It’s such a big part of our family. What better way to give back than to come together with your classmates and do something big for a place that has meant so much to us.” On the last page of the Spirit of 71, a sidebar concludes: “Four Years of Glory. We Came. We Saw. We Conquered.” We are grateful to the men of the Class of 1971 for their spirit, their initiative, and their generosity. May they continue to thrive! If you would like to learn how you can endow a named scholarship or fund at Central Catholic, please contact Ellie Dir, Vice President of Advancement at 503.230.1056. 12 | Central Catholic Magazine

Endowment Fund for Scholarships and Tuition Assistance General Endowment and Honor/Memorial Gifts $389,058 Endowed Scholarship Gifts $552,274 Total Gifts to General and Named Endowments $941,332 General Endowment and Named Scholarship Balance as of June 30, 2019 $13,219,133

Throughout its history, Central Catholic High School has maintained a deep commitment to providing a college preparatory Catholic education to students regardless of their family’s ability to meet tuition requirements. The school’s General Endowment Fund provides a sound financial foundation, which in turn provides significant scholarship money and tuition assistance for students in the future. Only a portion of the earnings on the principal amount is used annually for scholarships and tuition assistance, making this a perpetual gift. The endowment fund generated $603,813 in scholarships and tuition assistance for our students for the 2019-2020 school year.

The Point System

Volunteering matters! Central Catholic supports the co-curricular programs in the school through the points system that is fueled by volunteer hours. By creating volunteer opportunities for parents to earn points for their designated programs, Central Catholic was able to raise more funds overall. These volunteers performed nearly 2,000 hours for the Central Catholic Community! Thank you for your support and engagement. Central Catholic distributed $75,000 to the following programs for the direct benefit of current students: Art Club Baseball Basketball Cheer Constitution Team Cross Country Drama Equality Alliance

Football Golf Japan Club Lacrosse Mock Trial Music Rams Program Soccer

Students 4 Students Fundraiser 2018-2019 Revenue: $123,335

The Students 4 Students Fundraiser is a Central Catholic tradition, and our current students stand on the shoulders of past generations of Rams who for decades sold thousands of cases of Almond Roca each year. Today this tradition of students helping students continues with Central Catholic students raising money for tuition assistance and student-focused projects and activities. We offer our heartfelt thanks to the sponsors who stepped forward to assist our students in this important effort. You are modeling the importance of philanthropy and giving back to their school, as well as the importance of teamwork in pursuit of a common goal. 34 | Central Catholic Magazine

WE ARE

CENTRAL

CATHOLIC

#GivingTuesday 2018 Last year’s Central Catholic #GivingTuesday had an overwhelmingly positive response. We went into the day with modest, but clear goals: 1. Raise $3,500 for tuition assistance 2. Reach 25 donations from our community in order to “unlock” a $1,500 gift, 3. Reach 50 donations from our community in order to “unlock” another $1,500 gift 4. Gain 15 donations from GOLD alumni (graduates of the last decade: 2008-2018) to “unlock” $2,000 With a generous challenge match from Mark and Char Riley, we met and surpassed all of these goals! Here are the results: Total Number of Donors: 100 • Total Number of GOLD alumni donors: 36 • Total raised: $8,843, plus another $8,500 our community “unlocked” from Mark and Char Riley’s match! Thank you both for your inspirational generosity and thank you to all our donors for your enthusiastic response!

2019 Ram Open Golf Tournament What started out as a drizzle, cleared up to be a beautiful day for the Ram Open held on August 2, 2019 at Glendoveer Golf and Tennis. Close to 200 golfers gathered to support Central Catholic and our beneficiary: St. Vincent de Paul and our students’ winter food drive. We are grateful for the support from sponsors, especially our presenting sponsor, Pacific Office Automation. Golfers played a scramble-style tournament and enjoyed challenges along the way. It was a great day to connect with old friends and to meet some new ones as well! For more information and photos, check out our website!

The Central Catholic Class of 1969 celebrating their 50 reunion! th

2019 Reunions We had a wonderful time welcoming the classes of 1949, 1959, 1969, and 1979 on August 3, 2019, on the Central Catholic campus for their marquee reunions. Our alumni and their guests gathered in our cafeteria for dinner and drinks while reminiscing with former classmates and reviewing yearbooks and class composites. School tours were led by Msgr. Murphy, and the crowd was thrilled to walk down some of the same halls, and also see the improvements that have been made. For more photos and information on upcoming reunions, check out our website!

Alumni: We Want You! We are reviving the alumni board and are looking for new members who are enthusiastic about Central Catholic and our mission. In particular, we are looking for energetic professionals who can help strengthen the ties between the school, alumni, and the community. In the past, the alumni association helped with events and fundraising as a way to support the school, but there are so many ways we can help grow these connections and encourage involvement. A strong board would ideally be made of alumni from different decades who can attend six meetings a year, serve as an ambassador for the Central Catholic community, and foster lifelong support. Please contact Sara Wright, Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement at swright@centralcatholichigh.org or at 503.230.1056 ext. 1243 if you are interested or if you have any questions.
