From the
HEART When the National Breast Cancer Foundation announced in 2020 that it was aiming for zero breast cancer deaths by 2030, fashion-designer superstar, Camilla Franks, a breast cancer survivor and NBCF ambassador, wrote a moving letter to her future self. WORDS SALLY MACMILLAN
Dear Milla, Twelve years since you sat in that doctor’s office and felt the world around you come crashing down. Twelve years since you faced an uncertain part of my daughter and partner’s future. Twelve years since you shaved away my identity. Twelve years since you felt the raw grip of chemo and the terror of the unknown. Twelve years since your life walked a new path. Twelve years since you took back control of something beyond your own power. Twelve years since you survived. I write to you as a woman who is proud, loved, relieved, grateful – but above all, alive. Today marks the year 2030. Over many years, the National Breast Cancer Foundation has invested in emerging areas of research to eliminate breast cancer deaths. It is now a world without breast cancer. A world without women’s suffering. A world without loss and sadness. A world in which our mothers, daughters, sisters and girlfriends live without fear. Twelve years ago, you were diagnosed with a rare form of breast cancer; after six months of what your doctors called the “bazooka” of intense chemotherapy, you braved a double mastectomy and reconstruction. Your girls, who served you so fabulously, were laid to rest. Your new twins, Margarita and Tressara, took on the new front. And baby, haven’t they bloomed ever so gloriously… they even made national TV. While humour was always your strongest bedside manner, it was an unspeakably difficult and trying time both mentally and physically – the storm wasn’t over just yet and this next chapter would be the most painful. Your greatest role yet was the simple title of Mum. You earned this name in 2018 when Luna Gypsy Jones joined you earth side, just three months before you were diagnosed with BRCA1... It was short-lived bliss, so brutally ripped away with no warning or explanation. You took on a new title of Mum Fighting Breast Cancer. As a result of the BRCA1, this also meant the big O came into play. Not that one, your ovaries. Yep, they would need to go too. A big full stop.
6
You were robbed of things, you will never know again... f*#% you, cancer. You’ve always been a shining poster child of learning things the hard way, and cancer was no different. In 2018, upon your diagnosis, you cried endless tears of fear, despair, confusion and helplessness. Weeks passed after your diagnosis, a dark and confusing blur came before you until you became confident in a treatment plan. Never-ending doctor and specialist appointments, you dug so deep for answers while navigating fear and terror. Cancer became a full-time job. You sought answers, opinions and advice and more often than not – each opinion conflicting the last. You knew that in stillness you would find the answers right for this body and together with your medical team you drew up the battle lines and launched heavy artillery of science and medicine to save your body, your temple. You took back control. You became the CEO of your body. And baby, you’re here to tell the story. Back in 2020, we still lost eight women to breast cancer every day. That was eight too many. You now stand proudly alongside sisters who fearlessly entered the same battlefield you did – and for the sisters who joined other universes in the process; our heart is with you always. If our journey has taught us anything, it is that there is reward in relentless tenacity and never saying never. You’ve found a fountain of empowerment of sharing your story and encouraging anyone who will listen to never settle on first guidance. With every fibre of my being, I write this letter with the knowledge that we’ve reached zero deaths from breast cancer. No victims, no deaths – just no breast cancer at all. That’s my kind of world, and it means the world for me to be here. Love
Millax

True COLOURS
I
n 2023, Camilla – the woman and the brand – is going from strength to strength. Her distinctive, high-end resort-wear was shown off to the world by Jennifer Coolidge (Tanya McQuoid) in both seasons of the outrageously fabulous TV series The White Lotus; her intricate patterns now feature on Camilla swimwear, accessories, menswear, kids’ clothes and homewares collections; there are 20 dedicated Camilla shops in Australia and two in the US; and her designs sell in 55 countries* around the world. Camilla burst onto the fashion scene in 2004, showing her first collection of exquisitely embellished kaftans and kimonos at Australian Fashion Week. At just 25, she was a one-woman powerhouse, running every part of the business from her Bondi store, but it wasn’t long before her designs and inclusive approach – her models were far from the skeletal type beloved of traditional designers – took her in front of a national and then global audience. Travel has always inspired Camilla’s limited-edition collections and post-covid she was thrilled to return to her beloved Italy. “Travel turns you into a storyteller – and storytelling is at the heart of everything I do,” she says. It is now five years since Camilla was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of breast cancer, a few weeks after her daughter Luna was born. She underwent six months of intense chemotherapy, a preventative double mastectomy, breast reconstruction and the removal of her fallopian tubes, much of which she shared with her 480,000-plus Instagram followers.
“I’m so grateful to be an ambassador for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, helping to lend a hand and give a voice to such an incredible organisation,” she said. “The NBCF provides such crucial research that is going to help end breast cancer once and for all.” For more information, see au.camilla.com, nbcf.org.au 7

WORDS SALLY MACMILLAN
A
s many of her devoted fans know, Sally was diagnosed with aggressive stage-three breast cancer in 2011 – just days before she gave birth to her first child. She had to start a grueling 12-month regime of chemotherapy and radiation, and then underwent a double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. Thankfully, Sally has now been free of cancer for more than 10 years. She and husband Marcus have two daughters, 11 and six. Her online wellness brand SWIISH is a “huge” fulltime job.
However, she always finds time to raise awareness of breast cancer on behalf of the BCNA and other charities – including Wish by SWIISH – and recently raised thousands of dollars for breast cancer research through SWIISH WALK 4 BCNA. “My life was turned on its head when I was diagnosed,” Sally says. “You go into a whole new world that you know nothing about. There’s a lot of misinformation out there and BCNA can help guide you through it. There are many types of breast cancer, everyone’s treatment is different and the support BCNA offers makes an enormous difference to understanding your own journey.” One day during treatment Sally rang her sister, Maha Corbett, from hospital and said, “If I survive, I need to give something back.” At the time she didn’t know what that would look like but after her treatment had finished, she says, “I was incredibly grateful to be alive, but my body was ravaged.
“I had no hair; my mouth was full of ulcers and I had put on 30 kilos during chemo. For a nutritional boost I started making green smoothies, which were almost unheard of back then. When I experienced a major shift in my body and my overall health, I knew I had to take it further.” In 2012, Sally and Maha founded SWIISH and in 2015 released their bestselling book Super Green Smoothies. Meanwhile, they spent more than two years developing Supergreen Superfood with a manufacturing partner, a scientifically formulated powder packed with more than 40 top-quality ingredients. It’s still SWIISH’s most popular product.
WHAT WOULD SALLY SAY TO A YOUNG WOMAN WHO HAS JUST BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER? “First, be kind to yourself. You experience a rollercoaster of emotions – you can’t predict how you will feel, from one day to another or even one hour to the next. I was lucky to have the support of my family and friends, and I also saw a wonderful therapist who helped me deal with missing my old life and navigating ‘cancer world’.

Sally is a glowing testament to the success of her products. “Every morning I do a supershot trio – a mix of supergreens, immunity and collagen supplement powders – while I’m making lunch for the girls. Then I’ll have a Body Blitz plant-based meal replacement when we’re on the school run, and before I go to bed I down a mix of sleep powder and gut-cleansing powder.” 9

BEST OF BEAUTY We asked Eleanor Pendleton, the Central Coast’s own beauty guru and Founder & Publisher of Gritty Pretty, Australia’s premier beauty website and magazine, to share her current favourite beauty buys and salons. So if you are visiting the Central Coast, take note for the best in hair, skin, and all things beauty!
ELEANOR PENDLETON: Terrigal Boardwalk, Dawn & Folk Photography.

WORDS COLETTE HARVEY
Eleanor Pendleton is the epitome of effortless chic and I have always wondered what’s her secret? I was lucky enough to sit down with her this month and ask how she keeps that glow. From the ultimate bouncy blow-dry, to a quick fix for getting rid of those not so Chanel bags under my eyes, these are Eleanor's top places I will be visiting this summer. BEST PLACES FOR THE PERFECT BLOW-DRY AND COLOUR? For the perfect balayage, I see salon owner Renee Marshall at Allure the Salon, Terrigal. Renee nails my colour every time. For an express blow-dry (made even better with a glass of wine and cheese platter), you can’t beat Glow Beauty Space, Wamberal – they understand that women, especially busy mothers, can’t always spend hours at a salon and so I love that I can be in and out with beautifully-styled hair that leaves me feeling fresh and confident.
LEFT: Allure The Salon, Terrigal BELOW: Five Star Day Spa, Erina
FACIALS AND PEELS? As a beauty editor, I’m delighted to see the Central Coast is brimming with talent. For specialised, targeted facials, I visit Dolce Vita Skin, Erina. Stocking some of my favourite skincare brands such as Biologique Recherche, Rationale and iS Clinical, they’re my go-to for when I want to treat skin concerns such as pigmentation. For a more holistic facial experience, Sara Wells Skin at Erina Heights has magic hands and post-facial, Sara will have you feeling like you’re floating on a cloud. LEFT: iS Clinical Brightening Complex, $255 MIDDLE: Dior Addict Lip Glow Balm, $62 RIGHT: Ultra Violette, Daydream Screen Tinted Veil SPF 50, $55
NAILS? For the best manicures and pedicures, I highly recommend Mayfair Salon. Owner Clare Mann is a nail expert and I see her monthly for my builder gel nails. MASSAGES? Five Star Day Spa at Erina offers relaxing body massages and treatments. They also have gift vouchers, which are a perfect last minute gift idea. For pregnancy massage, I recommend the wonderful female physiotherapists at Physiozest, Erina – they were fantastic during my second pregnancy. SAUNA AND STEAM? CryoPlus at Erina is a wellness centre that offers infrared saunas, float tanks and cryotherapy. If you haven’t experienced a float tank before, I highly recommend it as it's such a surreal feeling to feel completely weightless. INJECTABLES? While I can't speak from personal experience of having injectables myself, the Central Coast's most trusted and respected aesthetic doctors are Dr Nik Davies at Glow Beauty Space, Wamberal and YOU by Dr Shauna Watts, Forresters Beach.
PILATES OR CARDIO GIRL? WHERE DO YOU WORK OUT? I love Pilates by April at The Cottage, Terrigal. It’s close to home and I love their reformer pilates classes. With acreage views and a beautiful studio setting, I love that I can do pilates while seeing wallabies in the distance. Fusion Pilates at Terrigal also offer great mat classes. For any women who are pregnant or postpartum, BUMP at Erina Heights has a wonderful community and their reformer pilates and yoga classes are a great, safe workout too. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 10 (CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT) BEAUTY PRODUCTS FOR SUMMER? My number one product (all year round) is SPF. Some of my favourite face sunscreens include UltraViolette Queen Screen SPF 50+, Ultraviolette Daydream Screen SPF 50+ Veil as well as AiryDay Golden Glow SPF 50+ and Naked Sundays SPF 50+ Hydrating Glow Mist, which can be applied over makeup. For makeup, some of my essentials include Benefit Gimme Brow Tinted Brow Gel, MECCA Cosmetics Hydra Cheek Tint and Illuminating Balm Duo, Dior Addict Lip Glow Balm and Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate Cream Duo. For skincare, I can’t live without Emma Lewisham Reset Serum, iS Clinical Brightening Complex and Emma Lewisham Supernatural Rich Cream. WHERE DO YOU SHOP FOR MAKEUP / BEAUTY PRODUCTS ON THE COAST? Mecca Maxima and Sephora at Erina Fair are the perfect destinations for all of your beauty and makeup needs.

SUMME R How to Rose all day – there is no question we all love rose, sure other wines taste good too, but there something about the pink hue of Rose that a chardonnay or shiraz can’t compete with.
Upstairs Wines is a boutique wine store curated by husband and wife wine people, Dave and Michelle Parmentier. The name came from their tiny tasting room on top of a speakeasy in Bondi. To get an invite to the tasting, you had to know who to text. The reply would be, “just come upstairs”. The name stuck. They’re no longer upstairs in the figurative sense, but have grown and evolved into a collection of wine store/tasting rooms/come hang out with us and talk about wine spaces.
S SIP
When the long hot days of summer hit, it’s time to put away that big bold red and reach instead for a lighter refreshing summer sip to enjoy poolside or with an al fresco meal!
KINETIC AGLIANICO This wine is all about energy. It may be a red but it was fermented using carbonic maceration making for a light, juicy and most importantly chillable vino for drinking by the pool.
GRANDIS PET NAT Naturally sparkling, zero preservative summer drinking. Plush, zesty, morish and quaffable as ever.

INFLUENCED By Hayley Sing HER FAVOURITE SPOTS ON THE COAST It is no secret that the Central Coast has played second fiddle to Sydney when it comes to the region’s hospitality scene, but in recent years the Central Coast has upped the ante on the dining front. I sat down with publicist, content creator and all-round fashionable it-girl, Hayley Sing, to find out the best places to dine. There is no denying it's an exciting time to be a foodie right here on the Central Coast. WORDS COLETTE HARVEY

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF? I was born and raised on the Central Coast of New South Wales. I attended St Joseph’s College, before moving to Sydney at the age of 21. In Sydney, I enjoyed meeting new people and experiencing the city life, while working on my career and PR skills. When I was 29, I moved back to the Central Coast to start a family. I now have a son who is almost 4 years old. I am the owner of Vine Public Relations, a PR agency on the Central Coast. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING ON THE COAST? I absolutely love the community here. The people are very warm and welcoming - everyone says hello and has a chat. I love the waterways - the choices of surf beaches, bays, ocean pools, lagoons and more. We are so lucky to live along the Coastline and be surrounded by national parks. YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL HOT SPOTS THAT TOURISTS MAY NOT KNOW? Absolutely - I have so many I could suggest. The Entrance Social Club up the north end, offers a stunning aesthetic interior of textures and soft tones. It has multiple seating options for guests, including a beer garden that showcases live music and a roof top that opens and closes, allowing for sunshine or protection from the rain. It also has the coolest sports bar on the Central Coast, as well as swinging seats, an adults-only section, and a dog- friendly patio.
Throughout Summer Rhonda’s Pizza Bar in Terrigal hosts bottomless lunches in their upstairs area. Offering an assortment of pizzas and pastas, with 90 minutes of flowing house beers, wines and Margarita's.
tables. There is an inside dining area that has great classic food options and a view of the ocean and golf course, as well as pool tables and a games room downstairs. This venue caters for everyone.
Bar Botanica is a hidden gem- located at Erina Heights, offering a Tuscan vibe with a resident cocktail bar set amongst lush gardens, serving a range of culinary and beverage delights, accompanied by a gin tasting distillery bar. It’s open Wednesday through to Saturday for brunch, lunch and afternoon relaxo’s. On Saturday and Sunday they have live jazz in the garden from 2pm. It’s the perfect setting for the kids to roam and the folks to soak up the afternoon sun and surroundings. Alternatively, a date spot, or a much needed girls catch up. BEST SUGGESTIONS FOR A SPECIAL DINNER DATE OR CELEBRATION
LUNCH WITH A VIEW? Lunch with a view would be Saddles at Mt White. Set on 28 acres of sprawling bush land and sitting on the edge of a beautiful dam, the restaurant really highlights the Australian landscape. The seasonal menu is wholesome, simple yet elegant and carefully curated to showcase Australian cuisine. The restaurant bakes in-house sourdough and pastries, including a unique take on the Australian classics, the meat pie and sausage roll. The Boathouse Patonga. At the southern end of the Central Coast, Patonga is a fishing village surrounded by bushland and Brisbane Waters. The restaurant’s view is of the ocean and the backdrop of Palm Beach. It’s a stunning view with many locals on the jetty fishing. The menu consists of seafood platters, buckets of prawns and sharing pizzas.
My all-time two favourite restaurants are Arc Est and Yellowtail in Terrigal. Both are intimate, with dim mood lighting that sets the tone. Yellowtail offers an Asian-infused seafood menu, while Arc Est offers a tantalising modern Australian menu. BRUNCH WITH THE GIRLS? Kew Dining at Erina Heights is a relaxed and stylish venue with an enclosed terrace. Surrounded by trees and a sense of calm serenity, Kew Dining’s brunch is one of my all-time favourites. The food options are unique and classic, with a touch of creativity. Local produce is used, such as pesto garnishes and rolled omelettes. There is even the option of a high tea, decorated with traditional China and crystalware, making it the perfect touch for a feminine get-together.

BEST FAMILY FRIENDLY VENUES? There are so many to name on the Coast. Many of the pubs and clubs offer an open area for kids to play and/or a playground too! One that comes to mind is the Avoca Bowling Club. They have a huge kids play area and a dedicated lawn area for the kids to run around or kick the soccer ball. The Shelly Beach Golf Club is a fantastic family friendly venue too! Huge grass hills overlooking Shelly Beach. It’s the perfect place for a late lunch with the whole family to watch the sunset, children play on the big grassy areas and picnic

A powerhouse of artisanal baking, Sonoma recently opened its doors in Terrigal and it doesn’t disappoint. We recommend the coffee, butter croissants and sourdough.
Lady Copa Pizzeria e Birra run by locals Medina and Frank, offers rustic Italian woodfired pizzas and artisan food at Copacabana. You can eat at the restaurant or grab your pizza and head across to the beach. 27

THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN: BY LISA SEE
GOOD MATERIAL: BY DOLLY ALDERTON
This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a unique and unforgettable culture, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous physical work, and the men take care of the children.
From the bestselling author of Ghosts and Everything I Know About Love: a sharply funny, beautifully observed, and exquisitely relatable story of heartbreak and friendship, and how to survive both.

TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW: BY GABRIELLE ZEVIN
The stratospheric rise of Australian swimwear label Triangl was one wild ride, with retail whiz Erin Deering at its helm. This is the story of building a business from scratch, selling one bikini a day to making over US $200,000 in the same 24 hours, and the devastating toll it took upon its Co-Founder's mental health.
Stylish and open-hearted, this is a very different kind of love story, elevated and energised by being set in the world of creativity and video gaming.

CHANGE Publisher, entrepreneur, property expert and Principal of Belle Central Coast, Cathy Baker, is a household name if you live here on the Coast and throughout the real estate world across the country. WORDS COLETTE HARVEY

That isn’t just because she has won multiple awards, such as Real Estate Executive of The Year, or regularly makes the top 100 agents nationally, it is because she has deep, genuine connection to the community, founding a local charity that works tirelessly across sponsoring and supporting multiple community members and events monthly. When it comes to selling top end houses, Cathy has the ability for thinking outside the box, as we have seen recently in her marketing approach to listing luxury properties. Cathy and her team engaged international model, TV presenter and mum Laura Csortan and celebrity Interior designer and Belle Magazine Style Director at Large, Steve Cordony. Appearing in campaign collateral and across social media, Cathy worked with the personalities to gain hundreds of thousands of potential new buyers. I sat down with Cathy who maintains the number one spot in luxury listings on the Coast and asked what the future of the property market looks like.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT THESE LAST FEW YEARS SINCE COVID HIT US AND INTEREST RATES HAVE CONTINUED TO RISE?
ensure they have an experienced agent to navigate them through the changes in the summer market and adapt their strategy.
I have noticed the shift in more people valuing their lifestyle and time with family. There was a huge shift from the Sydney market particularly buying holiday homes on the Coast to now living a dual lifestyle between Sydney and the Coast. The lower levels of property on the market over the last 6 months has also helped to ensure the property market recovered in this last quarter and quickly recovered from the initial fall in prices earlier this year.
WHAT IS THE OUTLOOK FOR THE AUSTRALIAN PROPERTY MARKET FOR 2024 AND BEYOND?
AS A HOMEOWNER MYSELF ON THE COAST THAT HAS WATCHED THE PRICES RISE AND FALL, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE OVER SUMMER? We are seeing an abundance of properties looking to come to market over spring and summer . The buyer demand currently is still strong , but that may slow down at the end of the year. Vendors looking to sell need to
Predications are that we will see a fall in interest rates in 2024 and a stabilisation of the market over the next two years. International buyers are showing strong signs of growth, with an influx of holiday home buyers showing this avenue of investment as a primary focus HAS OUR MARKET REALLY BOTTOMED OUT? All indications are that we are the through the worst of the market, however an oversupply of houses over summer could be a concern. Many people held off selling over 2023 and with many coming off fixed interest rate loans the pressure to sell quickly is apparent in some areas.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS WHEN THINKING OF SELLING A HOME – WHERE DOES ONE START? It is important to ensure you consult an experienced agent with a strong track record of results, but also someone who can curate a bespoke marketing angle for your property to ensure it stands out from the crowd. Your agent should be someone who strives to get you a premium price not someone who is just interested in getting it sold. WHY IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO BUY INVESTMENT PROPERTY ON THE CENTRAL COAST? Having a 10 year lifestyle plan to think about your goals for the next 10 years is the key to thinking about a long term investment strategy. Looking at plans for retirement, and how your super can increase wealth and lifestyle are all important factors to look at before making any decisions about investment. A lifestyle plan to share with your accountant and financier is a great tool to use.

OAK ROAD, MATCHAM
Modern quality + vintage character on a gorgeous 1.25Ha property. Pairing a 21st century architectural build with the romance of a classic Federation cottage, this picture-perfect homestead represents the very best of both eras. Nestled into lush, flowering gardens and leafy orchards, it claims just over three acres in one of the area's most beautiful pockets. This home is an inspired combination of modern functionality and vintage character; French doors open all the main living areas to wide, shady verandahs wrapping around the entire cottage, while a northerly aspect creates luminous interiors. Adding further appeal for extended families, there's a second property – it's a lovely two-bedroom cottage with a separate entrance off McGarrity Avenue.
