EDITOR-IN-CHIEF letter

Dear Reader,

Spring has arrived on the beautiful Central Coast, bringing with it the warmth of summer and a renewed sense of energy. As the days grow longer and we bask in the extra sunshine, our vibrant community reminds us daily of how fortunate we are to call this place home.

Welcome to our 2024 Creatives issue—another celebration of the incredible talent that thrives in our region. It’s been an honour to collaborate with some of the Coast’s finest architects and designers, showcasing the best homes our area has to offer and delving deeper into the creative processes behind them. Beyond homes and gardens, we’ve also highlighted the work of photographers, fine artists, fashion designers, and more in our Coastal Creatives feature (p. 32).

As summer approaches, we remain committed to celebrating the Central Coast’s creative community. If there’s a creative talent you believe deserves recognition, please reach out to us via our social channels or email.

In this issue, we’ve focused on depth over breadth—exploring shoppable trends from local home designs that you can incorporate into your own spaces this spring, and spotlighting the future plans of our creatives as we embrace this season of growth. At Belle Property, we’re also excited to be growing, which you can read more about on page 46.

As you take a moment to slow down and immerse yourself in this issue, we hope you find inspiration in the stories of the people who have inspired us. We’re filled with gratitude for the opportunity to bring these stories to life for you, and we hope you enjoy reading them as much as we enjoyed creating them.

Landscape designer, Michael Cooke, invited us for a wander in his personal ‘backyard’ - a design that has been 35 years in the making

PHOTOGRAPHY LUKE SHADBOLT

MICHAEL COOKE’S LOVE FOR GARDENS HAS BEEN LIFELONG

- from when he was 11 years old, riding his skateboard down to the local nursery to ‘help out’ before buying the same nursery at 22, to marrying his sweetheart and purchasing the Mangrove Mountain bush block over 35 years ago that he now calls home - and which tells the incredible story of his life as one of Australia’s most prominent garden designers.

Now in his 60s, Michael has designed and worked on thousands of Australian gardens, and is well-known for his creative vision and ability to curate gardens that strike the perfect balance between manicured and, in his words, ‘disobedient’. His diversity of experience, including several years as the Garden Editor of Marie Claire Lifestyle and the Sydney magazine, as well as the writing of two books (the latest aptly titled ‘Disobedient Gardens’) has informed a practice that embraces both the functional and the aesthetically pleasing in equal measure. “I love to focus on designing a garden that feels good. Not designing a garden to impress people, funnily enough, seems to be what others find impressive. A garden should be individual - with some areas everybody would like, and elements that aren’t for everybody. It’s definitely very personal,” explains Michael.

Michael’s own garden is a testament to his philosophy that a garden should feel lived in and loved. It tells the story of his, and his family’s, last 35 years, and has been the ultimate ‘testing ground’ for his practice. “When we first moved here, I just wanted to bring plants home and stick them in the ground - so I’m still living with the mistakes I made 35 years ago, trees I put in the wrong spot, and things that didn’t quite make sense,” he laughs. When asked if he regrets it, he just smiles. “That’s what makes our place ours, you have to live with your mistakes.” Over time, Michael has recorded every plant in the garden, when each is planted and where it came from in a collection of diaries he keeps by his bed. “Over the years, there have been so many trends, changes in our own lives as our family has grown - and this garden is like a photo album of all of it. That, in itself, is incredibly special,” he explains.

In the garden, you’ll find just about everything - from summer-scented figs to Eucalypts, persimmons, plums, grasses, flowering shrubs, a herb and veggie section, sweetly perfumed plants intentionally and discreetly placed around the pool, and even a ‘winter garden’ that includes flowers and coloured stems that come to life when the rest of the garden is in its slumber. The Cookes’ garden is so large that it “doesn’t all hit its straps at the same time” - there’s always something flowering, fruiting or changing.

And Michael’s best advice for those looking to create a garden with more character? “Anybody with the space should be growing some fruit trees. They’re useful, they look good, and to me, a garden with fruit trees never feels pretentious - it always feels comfortable, and warm, and lived in.”

WELCOME TO

BILL’S HOUSE

This classic 1970s red brick home has undergone the ultimate transformation - and one that is close to Fabric Architecture’s Damien Furey’s heart

LIKE MOST CLASSIC 1970S RED

BRICK HOMES, THE BONES OF ‘BILL’S HOUSE’ WERE ALWAYS SOLID

- prompting Fabric Architecture to utilise the existing form and redesign the home from the inside out. The essence of the original home was retained, but through the use of thermally modified sustainable timber cladding and batten screening, the team chose a sustainable approach that also allowed a fresh and organic design to emerge.

The home’s north-facing facade boasts a palette inspired by neighbouring bushland, with barestone prefinished panels giving way to new openings onto the lanscaping. This is complemented by light-filled, modern interior spaces that look out through large windows placed to view the exterior’s abundant greenery - including the stunning Angophora trees out front. “The materiality, specifically Abodo timber cladding, blends seamlessly with the Australian bush while the native gardens seek to give back what was originally taken away by suburbia,” explains Damien Furey, Co-Director at Fabric Architecture.

The Fabric team’s design approach not only minimised environmental impact, but also connected the home’s airy interior to the natural beauty of the exterior, effortlessly opening up each space within the home while creating a sense of tranquility, too.

The design also addresses functional aspects with great care, while being cost-effective. “Our budget was shaped by leveraging the existing house’s equity, while also considering the current financial climate. We stretched every dollar to create a "whole new house" from the old,” explains Damien. Large windows and operable panels invite abundant natural light while minimising heat gain, thanks to strategic steel awnings that shield against the afternoon sun. The stepped form of the house helps mitigate neighbouring views and reduces sun loss, contributing to both privacy and sustainability - also maximising passive heating and cooling within the home and reducing energy use.

For Damien and his family, this home is more than just another project - it’s a space where they can breathe, grow, and connect with each other and the beautiful Central Coast environment. “I wanted to show my children that we can make things beautiful again,” Damien reflects. “A home is a place where we grow and make memories, not just a piece of architecture”

ENDLESS VISTAS

Designed by Slater Architects, ‘Vista House’ is as exceptional in its design as its sweeping views of the Pacific

PHOTOGRAPHY LUKE SHADBOLT

SET OVER FOUR STOREYS ON

A STEEP SLOPE ABOVE AVOCA BEACH, ‘VISTA HOUSE’ REPRESENTS THE ULTIMATE IN INNOVATIVE

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND SUSTAINABLE LIVING .

Designed by Cathy Slater from Slater Architects', this stunning home began with a partially-completed concept design from a retired architect - an unusual ask for the Slater Architects team - with a brief to provide a family home for loved ones to visit and stay, which integrated with the incredibly steep and narrow environment on site. The design was further adapted to accommodate the inclusion of a games room and gym for the active generation, combined with relaxed sitting areas for a quieter retreat, and ensured every room in the home capitalised on the block’s sweeping views of Avoca Beach and the ocean beyond.

The result is a home that boasts dramatic views throughout, accommodates the diverse needs of a family spanning four generations, and demonstrates a striking use of materials. “One of my favourite features is the dramatic four-storey stone wall that serves as the spine of the home, starting at the entry level and extending down through each floor, framing the central staircase,” explains Cathy. “This design choice not only provides structural support but also creates a visual

anchor that connects each level of the home.”

If you’re not inclined to take the stairs, the home also incorporates a lift that is a key feature of the home with glass walls and exposed block work. Both provide vertical cohesion and a touch of modern elegance, allowing easy movement between the levels while maximising the spectacular views at every turn.

The use of polished concrete floors, Colourbond standing seam cladding, and off-form concrete ensures both minimal maintenance and a timeless appeal. Copper gutters and a sophisticated solar and smart home system further underscore the home’s commitment to sustainability and efficiency, while the natural palette of materials blend seamlessly with the site and the coastal environment beyond.

For Slater Architects, Vista House represents not only a successful project for their team, but a continuation of their long-standing commitment to innovative and responsive design. With over 45 years of experience, the firm has built a reputation for creating distinctive homes that are both functional and beautifully integrated with their environments.

CUSTOM/ BUILT RESILIENCE

Benjamin White, Andrew Dickson and Jonathon Condon of White + Dickson took us on the journey of one of their most resilient homes to date

PHOTOGRAPHY LUKE SHADBOLT

WHEN ASKED WHAT MAKES ‘OCEAN VIEW HOUSE’ SPECIAL,

Benjamin White, Andrew Dickson and Jonathon Condon of White + Dickson Architects are quick to call out the exceptional collaboration between client, architect, builder and artisan trades. “The typical adversarial ways of working were never allowed to enter our process, and our whole team approach meant every individual on site contributed meaningfully throughout the build process,” explains Andrew. “This has resulted in one of the most highly-refined, detail-laden homes in the region.”

As Andrew, Ben and Jonathon begin to explain the hurdles they faced during the process, it’s no surprise this home took a village to complete. Once the beach storm event of 2019 hit Wamberal and threatened to compromise the 1.8 kilometres of deep concrete piles already installed on site, then at risk of collapse, the COVID pandemic closely followed and caused a programming maelstrom for the already complex build. “We managed the project on what felt like an hour-by-hour rate through several difficult events, which was then compounded by supply issues for joinery and materials,” tells Jonathon. The final result is a home that is as much about the journey of its creation as it is about its finished form.

The home itself is a striking example of refined detail, and reflects a commitment to sustainability and minimal maintenance while seamlessly integrating with its coastal environment. A sophisticated geothermal heating and cooling

system, combined with an integrated solar and battery setup, ensures a sustainable thermal environment year-round. The focus on durability and minimal upkeep is evident in the choice of materials, too - which include off-form concrete with a Venetian plaster-like finish, anodised aluminium cladding, and custom folded zinc details. Deeply stained timber ceilings, which appear to float over walls and define the horizontal nature of the spaces, have been used to contrast and refine the concrete, creating a luxurious and tactile living experience.

The walls of the home are a rich tapestry of dolomite render, stone sheet, and upholstered panels, each chosen for their aesthetic and textural qualities. Italian and local joinery, along with Italian smoked glass doors, further enhance the home’s elevated feel, while other custom features, including a drencher system to wash away salt spray and custom integrated ceiling registers for air conditioning, underscore the meticulous attention to detail that characterises the entire build.

Like all other White + Dickson homes, ‘Ocean View House’ will require minimal maintenance and age gracefully. All services, such as electricity, water and renewable energy infrastructure, are concealed and protected from the harsh beach environment, too. “We strive to ensure every project has its own ‘soul’ and is unique, while meeting our clients’ every need to create a home that truly nurtures its inhabitants. From proportion and scale to sound harmonics, we consider every aspect of a home,” explains Benjamin.

One Window at a Time

SHEER CURTAINS

Sheer curtains provide a light and airy feel, ideal for rooms where light-blocking isn't necessary, such as living rooms or spaces with beautiful views. Floor-to-ceiling sheers elevate your space by letting in natural light while maintaining an elegant atmosphere. They offer a delicate balance of privacy and light control, perfect for improving the room's ambiance.

LAYERED CURTAINS

Layering curtains, such as pairing sheer panels with heavier curtains, adds style and functionality. This approach allows natural light to filter through during the day and provides privacy and darkness when needed. It's especially useful for bedrooms, where complete darkness is needed for sleep, but a softer light is preferred during the day. Layering also lets you experiment with different styles and textures, creating a unique look that reflects your taste while maximising functionality.

Transform YOUR HOME

With Window Coverings

WOVEN AND TEXTURED FABRICS

Woven and textured fabrics remain popular for their ability to add sophistication and artistry without overwhelming the room’s aesthetic. These materials enhance the visual and tactile experience of your window treatments.

PLEATS

Pleated curtains continue to be a classic choice in 2024, offering both versatility and style. The S-fold pleat, with its sleek design, suits modern or minimalist interiors, while the inverted box pleat is favoured for its smooth, elegant drape. Box pleats provide a clean, geometric look that complements modern decor without being overly elaborate.

SMART SYSTEMS

Smart blinds are a luxurious feature that integrates technology into your home. With motorised blinds, you control them via your smartphone, smart home system, or room controller, eliminating the need for cords. This convenience enhances comfort, energy efficiency, and adds a touch of sophistication to your home.

MOODY COLOURS

In 2024, rich, moody colours like deep greens, blues, and warm earthy tones are trending. These hues create a dramatic atmosphere, adding depth and character to any room. For a serene environment, neutral-toned curtains in soft pinks, beiges, light blues, and greys offer a versatile backdrop that complements various styles and creates a calming ambiance. Subtle patterns and textures in these neutrals can introduce vibrancy to otherwise subdued schemes, making them ideal for relaxation or guest areas.

The combination of materials used are set to evoke memories of holidays past, with wicker and rattan paired with seashells and lush greenery for the ultimate coastal escape.

PHOTOGRAPHY LUKE SHADBOLT WORDS JACQUELINE O’NEILL

LUKE SHADBOLT

MULTIDISCIPLINARY ARTIST, PHOTOGRAPHER & AUTHOR

Luke Shadbolt is a multidisciplinary artist originally from North Avoca, and has been capturing the beauty of the environment through photography since 2010. Initially art directing a bodyboarding magazine, Luke quickly transitioned from contributor to professional photographer, honing in particularly on his love of the ocean and its many forms. His work has taken him to breathtaking locations, including a memorable trip to Japan during cherry blossom season, where he proposed to his now-wife.

Some of Luke’s most recognisable work culminated in his ‘Maelstrom’ collection, the result of a month’s worth of shooting consistently large storm swells in the remote Pacific Ocean generated by an active El Niño event in 2016. Luke’s photography has since garnered international attention, with exhibitions across Australia and Europe. Luke has also crafted campaigns for the likes of Qantas and Audi, drawing on his rich creative background in graphic design, art direction and commercial photography, and you may have also seen his work through his ongoing collaborations with charitable organisations including Take 3 for the Sea, the Surfrider Foundation and Parley TV. In a career highlight, several of Luke’s works were also acquired by the collection of the Parliament of Australia in 2018.

Currently, Luke is studying architecture at university and hopes to further extend and expand his creative process, blending his passion for photography with new mediums. “I really enjoy the cross-pollination of ideas you can achieve from working across multiple mediums,” explains Luke.

This portrait series was photographed by Luke Shadbolt, along with several other features in this Spring edition of Central Coast Life & Style. You can discover even more at lukeshadbolt.com.

Always marching to the beat of her own drum, Weave embarked on her design career with a clear vision and determination from a young age. “I started making bomber jackets for my friends at 14 and stayed on this path through Sydney Fashion Design College,” she recalls.

Weave has since had her designs showcased locally, at Australian fashion weeks and also overseas. Her work is praised for its technical finesse and aesthetic beauty, with seasonal pieces. A standout moment in her career occurred during a Hong Kong fashion show. “It was the most unbelievable experience,” Weave shares. “I was there alone, so it was quite an isolated situation, but after my show I was bum rushed on the catwalk by Chinese TV stations and international press that wanted to interview me as the collection really turned out beautifully. I have never experienced anything like that before. It was definitely the pinch-me moment of my career.”

For Weave, every aspect of the design process is essential and requires the utmost attention-to-detail. From conceptualisation to fabric selection, pattern making, and final photography, she emphasises, “The entire process is crucial. All of it!”

Weave has recently released her Spring 2024 collection, ‘The Provenance’, and is excited to be preparing for further international progress over the next 12 months. “If I can continue creating, playing music, and supporting my family and friends, I’ll have fulfilled my life goal,” she says. “I don’t want to change a thing.” To learn more about Weave and her collection, head to byweavecollection.com 'or @byweave on socials.

KAREN BLOOMFIELD

FINE ARTIST & DIRECTOR @ BLOOMFIELD FINE ART GALLERY

Karen Bloomfield discovered her calling as a full-time artist at 40, driven by a desire to live authentically. “I was living up to everyone else’s expectations,” she reflects. After losing her mother at a young age, Karen was determined to “chase the thrill” and now follows what excites her. Holding a Diploma in Fine Art, she has been a full-time artist for the last decade, opening Bloomfield Fine Art Gallery in Terrigal last September - showcasing not only her own paintings but those of other exceptional local artists, too.

With two artworks selected for the collection of the Australian Embassy in Kabul, Bloomfield is one of a select group of Australian artists chosen to represent Australian Art in international embassies. She has created a brand for herself through two distinctive mediums: industrial oil paintings on canvas; and Australian wildlife in charcoal and ink on plywood, with her works on display around Australia and overseas.

Karen’s diverse portfolio reflects her belief that the essence of art lies in its execution rather than the subject matter. “Creating art feels like bringing something new into the world - with real joy coming from watching others connect with my work,” she shares. “I toyed with dark, cathartic imagery early in my career but left it behind for the pure joy of creating and sharing beautiful, fun and thought-provoking artworks. Watching someone's spirit rise as they fall in love with my artwork is the greatest honour I can derive as an artist.”

Karen is looking forward to further developing her gallery, which currently represents over 20 Central Coast artists, and plans to organise a Central Coast Art Award exclusively for residents to showcase local talent. Local interior designer, Camilla Ingall, founded her studio in 2019 after an inspiring trip to Israel sparked the idea to create ‘Unfolded’, subsequently soft-launched on social media when she returned to Sydney. She reached out to a few contacts, booked in some meetings and the rest was history. Five years on, Camilla’s empathetic and creative approach to her work is one she is proud of, and sets her apart in a vast industry.

With over a decade of experience in interior design and styling, Camilla’s work is driven by her firm commitment to ensure the best outcomes for her clients. “The interior space is vast and open-ended— you might be tasked with creating from scratch or reimagining an existing space, completely redefining its purpose and style. I believe it’s crucial to push boundaries while also ensuring both the aesthetic vision and practical needs of the brief are aligned,” Camilla explains.

Looking ahead, Camilla is excited to embrace big ideas and continue growing Unfolded, alongside her new industry podcast, Behind The Design. Having one of her biggest years yet, Camilla is excited to see what else she can create along the way. “I’ve learned to trust the process,” Camilla reflects. “If you are truly aligned in what you are doing, something bigger is always on the horizon.”

Grant Molony is a Central Coast-based street artist, and there are few iconic places across the region where you won’t find his work. His murals consist of detailed ink and acrylic with hits of colour, with prominent examples including his whale and bird paintings at Erina Fair, the large octopus that graces the walls of Gosford’s Bay Road Brewery, the larger-than-life Michael Jordan portrait in the men’s rooms at the Savoy in Long Jetty, and a portrait of Patty Mills at PCYC Bateau Bay. Grant suspects he’s painted hundreds of works across the Coast and on canvas, with portraits and animals a constant theme in his practice.

Grant hasn’t always been a full-time artist, but made the leap to full-time artistry nearly 11 years ago, driven by a desire to set a different example for his daughter.

“When she was born, I decided to dive into being a full-time maker,” he recalls. “I didn’t want her to see the norm of working just to get a paycheck in a job that didn’t inspire me. It was a scary decision, but I had to go all in.” Grant admits his passion for art was always there, though it took time for him to fully commit.

Grant has some exciting projects in the works, and continues to chase his storytelling and collaboration dreams every day - with no intention of slowing down anytime soon. To follow along on Grant’s creative journey, check out krop.com/grantmolony or join him on socials @grantmolony.

For cinematographer and artist, Ryan Andrew Lee, creativity was always the right path. Initially studying graphic design at UNSW College of Fine Arts (COFA), Ryan soon realised his passion lay elsewhere and transitioned to Digital Media, with his early work in surf film and content eventually broadening into a diverse range of cinematographic projects. Now a full-time artist since 2019 - focused on documentary, natural history and experimental eco-cinema - Ryan is incredibly grateful for his experiences so far.

Ryan has worked on a range of well-known projects since 2019 - including Netflix’s ‘Our Living World’, Channel 7’s ‘Made in Bondi’, several projects for the ABC and commercial work for a slew of Australia’s best creative and advertising agencies. One thing Ryan has learned, though, is to keep things in perspective. “Don't take things too seriously,” he warns. “I think especially in the art world, there's sometimes this weird ego thing going on - and it's no good.” Sage advice.

When asked what’s ahead, Ryan loves to embrace uncertainty and lean into his natural curiosity.

“I guess I’ll just see what happens,” he tells us with a smile. To learn more about Ryan’s work, head to ryanandrewlee.com or follow @ryan_andrew_lee on socials.

Luke Taaffe is a versatile designer and artist, with a portfolio spanning posters, murals, textiles, and digital pieces - starting with a range of freelance projects that set the stage for his diverse career, built on ample collaboration with a circle of creative friends from the Coast that he still has today. “We were all in a similar position,” Luke explains. “This allowed for the sharing of skill sets, which was really positive, fun and beneficial.”

Luke’s work with surf brands like Billabong, Roxy, and Rip Curl has been particularly influential. “These brands were built on a creative lifestyle where surfing, art and making creative designs for garments were part of their DNA,” Luke says. “Working with them opened me up to so many opportunities beyond those I expected - like creating event posters & merchandise, painting in-store murals or building digital assets to support marketing teams. Working cross-functionally like this has evolved what I do to this day.”

Luke plans to launch a clothing brand inspired by the Central Coast this summer, with a vision to build a platform where he can collaborate with other like-minded people, make great products and promote the area - while hopefully mentoring a few other young creatives along the way. You can follow along with Luke’s work at luketaaffecreative.com, or on socials @luketaaffe.

Adele McNab is a New-Zealand born, Sydney-based architect who works and now lives on the Central Coast after moving to the region with her family in 2022. Starting her career working part-time for a practice focused on hotels in the Pacific while completing a Master of Architecture nearly 15 years ago, Adele went on to commence full-time in 2011, then specialising in high-end boutique residential projects.

Now, Adele’s portfolio spans commercial, residential, and public projects, reflecting her belief in the importance of diversity in her practice. “Each project type presents unique challenges and opportunities,” she explains. “Solutions from one area can inspire ideas in another, leading to innovative design approaches and evolving the practice as a whole - also often leading to a broader and more profound impact.”

The most significant lesson Adele has learned is the multifaceted nature of architecture. “It’s not just about designing buildings,” she says. “Our work involves deep collaboration with clients, consultants, and contractors, creative problem-solving, and engaging in education for all the latest energy efficient design principles, sustainable materials and practices,” she explains.

For Adele, though, she finds joy in positively impacting a person’s everyday life and rituals through her work. “Creating spaces that resonate emotionally and practically with people, enhancing their experiences and contributing positively to their lives is the ultimate goal.” To learn more about Adele’s work, head to adelemcnab.com, or find her on socials @adelemcnabarchitects.

NAOMI SWALWELL

FASHION DESIGNER & FOUNDER @ HOUSE OF LACUNA

Naomi Salwell’s fashion journey began as a child in Pearl Beach, making dolls dresses on a tiny sewing machine in her cubby house her Dad had built, thatched in palm fronds. If Naomi wasn't designing the next outfit, she was out front setting up a lemonade stand and selling Arnott’s biscuits covered in Smarties. Naomi’s dream to work in fashion crystallised during her studies at East Sydney Tech, where she was mentored by Nicholas Huxley and gained early exposure at Mercedes Fashion Week and the Graduate Store, a charming boutique in Strand Arcade. Her family’s legacy in entrepreneurship - we can thank them for both the Cottees brand and the great taste of Passiona - has also fuelled her journey.

In 2019, Naomi founded House of Lacuna, a brand inspired by her industry experience and desire to create something unique. “I started by hand-printing fabrics in my garage,” Naomi shares. The brand’s name, meaning ‘new space’ in Latin, reflects her vision of innovation and growth. As the business expanded, Naomi’s production moved to India, where she collaborates with women-run businesses to support artisan craftsmanship.

In the next 12 months, Naomi envisions a larger warehouse and showroom, with global fulfillment on the horizon, and is excited for what the future holds for her creative career. You can visit House of Lacuna online at houseoflacuna.com.

TURNING of the TIDE

A Central Coast icon has changed hands, and its new owners realise they have big shoes to fill

On the main strip of Copacabana sits Ocean Bar-Cantina, a spot that’s become the pride of the area since its 2020 opening.

Growing into a favourite for locals and visitors alike, the restaurant offers diners a relaxed beachside atmosphere with a unique South American skew. Now, following a recent change of hands, the coastal icon has more eyes on it than ever, but new owners Michael and Liam are confident they understand the brief.

“The reception has been great, and the locals haven’t been shy about telling us not to mess it up. I think if people are protective of the place, it’s because there really is nothing else like it nearby,” Michael explains.

“We’ve got indoor and outdoor seating, a full-sized bar with beers on tap, an adored food and drink menu, and all of it a stone’s throw away from Copacabana Beach. What more could you want?”

Specialising in tapas share plates, beer and cocktails, the Ocean Bar-Cantina has catered to all types of visitors since its inception, from solo diners looking to meet up with people at the bar, to parents in need of a few cocktails and something to satiate the kids’ appetites, and even large groups interested in banquet-style events.

Despite the venue’s reputation and success, the new owners feel improvements can be made without losing its essence. What will that look like? According to Michael and Liam, a continued focus on live music and supporting local artists, keeping the place dog-friendly, and having a team that genuinely cares about the service they provide.

“THE LOCALS HAVEN’T BEEN SHY ABOUT TELLING US NOT TO MESS IT UP.”
MICHAEL, OWNER

“Sweeping changes are not the goal; we want to lean into and improve what’s already made the place so popular,” Liam says.

“We’re open Wednesday through Sunday now, but a breakfast menu and increased summer trading hours are on the cards. Otherwise, nothing major – we’re not looking to fix something that isn’t broken.”

WHERE YOU WORK

In an era where the traditional office is evolving and the line between work and wellness is beginning to fade, KoWorks stands at the forefront of this evolution.

KoWorks is a sanctuary for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and businesses seeking to thrive - with individuals encouraged to “love where you work”, born out of a desire to create more than just a workspace. Here, work and wellness blend seamlessly, creating a community where people support and uplift one another. The heart of KoWorks is its members, whose trust, support, and enthusiasm have been the bedrock of its success.

Founder Adam Hyman, inspired by his time volunteering at Copacabana Beach, turned a casual conversation about a pop-up coworking space into a vibrant movement. His vision was clear: to create a space where people could reclaim their work-life balance and find joy in their professional lives. Today, KoWorks stands as a testament to that vision, sparked during a challenging period when the global pandemic reshaped the way we approach our work lifestyles. KoWorks emerged as a response to the need for connection and adaptable workspaces - providing a dynamic environment where individuals can excel in their work while maintaining a focus on their overall lifestyle and wellness.

KoWorks began as a modest initiative with pop-up furniture at the Copacabana Surf Life Saving Club, inviting people out of their home offices and into one of the most breathtaking coastal settings imaginable - but quickly became more than a temporary solution. The beginning of something much more special, the concept resonated deeply with a growing community of local business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals, setting the stage for KoWorks to evolve into a permanent fixture across the Central Coast.

A year ago, KoWorks officially opened its doors in Killcare, beautifully set against the backdrop of Bouddi National Park. The success of this location was quickly followed by the launch of an urban warehouse space in Gosford and the popular Avoca Beach space, complete with meeting rooms, functional kitchen, ice bath and sauna. Each KoWorks location is thoughtfully designed to reflect its local community’s unique character, offering spaces that cater to diverse professional needs and personal preferences.

KoWorks isn’t just about providing a place to work; it’s about creating a community space that empowers individuals to freely choose how they live and work. With a user-friendly app, KoWorkers can easily choose locations, book spaces, check in, and connect with others. The platform also offers access to events, wellness spaces, and an online networking directory.
