ix family support services in the Gosford area have had their contracts renewed for three years under the Gillard Governments $13.4 million investment to continue support services for vulnerable families and children across the Central Coast.

S

The family support providers who’ve had their contracts renewed include Yarran Early Intervention Services at East Gosford, which will receive $345,000 in funding, Interrelate Family Centres Limited at Erina, with $3,847 100, Centacare Catholic Family Services at Gosford will receive $867,252, Relationships Australia at Gosford will receive $664,463, the Uniting Church in Australia at Gosford will receive $1,501 634 and the Shared Parenting Council of

Australia in Saratoga will receive $647,640. Member for Robertson Ms Deborah O’Neill said: “Many local services have received much need funding, as part of the Gillard Government’s $1.041 billion Family Support Program.” “This investment will allow our local support providers to continue doing their vital work helping Central Coast families.” The Family Support Program provides services in over 2200 locations across Australia to support

families, improve children’s wellbeing and safety, and build more resilient communities. Community organisations around the country receive funding to deliver important services such as parenting skills training, relationship counselling and family law services. “We know that their work is having a positive impact on the lives of local people,” Ms O’Neill said. “Triennial funding gives our local providers greater certainty and allows them

to focus on the essential support services they are providing, rather than spending time applying for grants. “The new Family Support Program provides more intensive support for vulnerable and at-risk children and families. “I welcome the Australian Government’s continued commitment to the Central Coast in delivering muchneeded family support services for our community.” Media Release, 22 Aug 2011 Matt Pulford, Office of Deborah O’Neill MP

Member for The Entrance Mr Chris Spence said the grant is part of a $315,000 boost in recurrent funding by the NSW Government to support the No interest Loans Scheme (NILS). “The increase came into effect on 1 July and brings the total annual funding to nearly $2.1 million,” he said. “This increase represents more support for struggling families and individuals who need access to fair, safe and equitable credit for the purchase of essential goods and services.” Mr Spence said the NSW Government currently funds 58 NILS service providers across the state. “This scheme provides interest free loans of up to $1200 to low income earners in difficult financial circumstances so they can buy essential household or medical products and services,” he said. “NILS supports stability within the community by helping families buy essential white goods for their home, computers for their children and keeps the family car on the road.” Mr Spence said the

scheme is a vital safety net for many people who would otherwise turn to high cost payday lenders, loan sharks and expensive ‘rent to purchase’ schemes. “Since Fair Trading began funding administrative support for the NILS® program in late 2008, more than 6000 loans totalling more than $5 million have been provided,” He said. Mr Spence said the current funding period was due to end on June 30 this year before the LiberalNational Government stepped in and announced a 12 months’ extension in order to maintain stability for the funded services. “The Government’s funding provides for ongoing employment of administrative staff and the employment of a full-time state coordinator,” he said. “I applaud the Gosford City Community Information Service Ltd for the valuable services and support they deliver to those in need in our community.” Media Release, 19 Aug 2011 Aaron Henry, Office of Chris Spence MP

Gosford area wins tourism awards ive tourism attractions in the Gosford Local Government Area have taken out top awards at this year’s Bluetongue Brewery Hunter and Central Coast Tourism Awards held at Ausgrid Stadium, Newcastle, on Thursday, August 11.

F

Glenworth Valley Outdoor Adventures took out gold in the Adventure Tourism category and the Tourist Attraction category, while Avoca Beach Picture Theatre was the winner in the Heritage and Cultural Tourism category, Strickland State Forest was at the top in the Ecotourism category and the Ex-HMAS Adelaide won the New Tourism Development category. “Well done to our local businesses and attractions that took out awards and also to those who were nominated as part of what was a wonderful evening for all involved,” said Gosford mayor Cr Laurie Maher. “We as a region take pride in being a premier tourist destination in NSW and it is fantastic to see some of our local operators being recognised at such a prestigious awards evening,” he said. Cr Maher said that this year’s winners were at the forefront of tourism services across a number of areas in Gosford City. “I would like to take this

opportunity to acknowledge the contribution these organisations have made to tourism right across Gosford City, their good work has enhanced our local economy and the fabric of our local community.” Minister for the Central Coast Mr Chris Hartcher also offered his praise to the successful attractions. “This is a great achievement for Central Coast tourism and highlights the growth of our region’s first-class tourism product,” Mr Hartcher said. “I am especially pleased to see no less than five Central Coast tourism businesses were first time winners, with Glenworth Valley Outdoor Adventures winning two awards in Adventure Tourism and Tourist Attractions.” “The outstanding quality of our tourism businesses enhances the experience of visitors to the Central Coast and it’s fitting that their dedication is being recognised by this year’s tourism awards,” Mr Hartcher said. Minister for Tourism Mr George Souris joined Mr

Hartcher in congratulating award winners and said they provided invaluable support to the NSW Government’s efforts to attract visitors to the State. “The Hunter and Central Coast regions are must-see destinations for many visitors to NSW. “The regions’ proximity to Sydney means it’s just a short drive or train ride away for most visitors,” he said. “And once they arrive, visitors are treated to some of the most stunning landscapes, beaches and wineries. “But these attractions would have only limited value if there wasn’t a groundswell of passion, innovation and investment at a local level, demonstrated by the businesses represented at this year’s Hunter and Central Coast Tourism Awards.” Media Release, 18 Aug 2011 Gosford Council media Media Release, 11 Aug 2011 Caroline Hutcherson, Office of Chris Hartcher MP

olice are appealing for information after a 13-year-old boy was chased along Jarret St, Wyoming near the intersection of Worrell Circuit.

The boy was riding a scooter along the road when an older model red Ford Falcon sedan, with two males on board, travelled past him at low speed. After driving past the boy, it stopped and a man got out of the passenger side. The man started running after the child, chasing him for about 100 meters before stopping when he reached Maidens Brush Rd. The boy returned to his home and the incident was reported to police. The man who chased him is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 40 to 45 years old, of an overweight build, about 175cm tall, with ruddy features and short brown

hair, Police are also looking for information after a nineyear-old boy alleged he was approached by a man in Kincumber on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 10. About 3:30pm the boy was walking along Bora Bora Drive, Kincumber, when a man in a dark coloured van pulled up alongside him. Police have been told the man asked the boy if he wanted a lift, however, the child ran home and informed his mother. The boy and his mother attended Gosford Police Station the following day and reported the matter to police. Investigators would like to speak to a man who

they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries. He is described as having dark skin and dark eyes with an unknown accent. He was wearing an earring in his left ear and a gold coloured necklace. His vehicle is described as a black van with yellow and black registration plates and a curtain on the passenger’s side window. Anyone who witnessed either incident or who has information about the identity and whereabouts of either men should contact Gosford Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Award nominations now open

Education Minister too busy for public concerns fter the Minister for Education Mr Adrian Piccoli made the decision to relocate Gosford Public School into the grounds of Henry Kendall High School, he has now indicated that he was too busy to meet with community members to discuss the best outcome for this decision, said Gosford Public School P and C Association president Mr Stephen Thomas.

ntries are now open for the 2012 Gosford City Australia Day Community Awards and Gosford Council is encouraging all residents to nominate someone who makes their community a better place to live.

E

Gosford City Australia Day Committee chairman Cr Jim Macfadyen said the prestigious awards provide an opportunity to thank those who are doing great things in our community. “These awards allow us to reward and celebrate people who are achieving fantastic things right throughout our City. “Receiving an Australia Day Community Award is the highest civic award a resident can receive at a local level – a real honour for any Gosford City resident. “I encourage everyone to nominate someone they know for an award and show

them you appreciate the contribution they make to the fabric of our community,” said Cr Macfadyen. Last year’s Gosford City Citizen of the Year Mr Alf Taylor said winning the award was an honour and had allowed him to reflect on the work he had done across the community. “Being named Citizen of the Year came as quite a shock, it was an honour to be among the nominees on the day and a humbling experience to be singled out from other volunteers in the community who aren’t always recognised. “It made me look at

what I had achieved as a volunteer over the years and I realised that I could only have done what I did because of others, including my family who supported and encouraged me along the way. “Our community could not exist without the efforts of people willing to give their time and abilities for the benefit of others, nominating someone you think deserves an award will go a long way to fostering a stronger sense of community right throughout our area,” said Mr Taylor. This year’s award categories are Arts,

In July this year, Gosford Public School’s P and C Association forwarded a letter to Mr Piccoli and requested a meeting to discuss the school community’s concerns about the relocation decision. Mr Thomas said Mr Piccoli replied to the letter stating he is too busy to meet with anyone from the school. “This is very much indicative of the response from the decision makers in this process,” said Mr Thomas. “Even the local member Chris Holstein has had only limited time to discuss the issue.” Mr Thomas said in the one meeting that Mr Holstein did allow with the school community, it was restricted just to himself, as the president. The Gosford Public School P and C Association has now written to the

premier Mr Barry O’Farrell to intervene. The P and C has requested that the premier arrange a meeting with Mr Piccoli so that it can express its concerns and look for alternative solutions. “Not only is the relocation a poor decision, but there has been no planning for the future educational needs for the children of Gosford City,” said Mr Thomas. “What resources will be available for the primary and secondary students of Gosford City in 15 to 20 years time if they are selling off the school assets now? “Someone needs to think about those future requirements before it’s too late and there is no land available in Gosford,” he said. Scammers target Gosford area cammers have recently been targeting the Gosford area and member for Gosford Chris Holstein is warning residents to be extra vigilant and on the lookout for scams.

S

Mr Holstein said that between January and August last year Fair Trading received 1019 scam reports. “For the same period this year Fair Trading has received 2111 reports from consumers,” he said. “Many of these are based overseas and appear to be using cheap labour to personalize and expand their operations. NSW Fair Trading Centres have in the past week received calls from consumers which indicate the scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated. One consumer was told they were entitled to a government rebate on their power and telephone bills, either direct to their bank account or by cheque. Another reported being told they were entitled to a refund of $5284 bank fees.

Mr. Holstein said the scammers were reported to have strong accents and be telling consumers to call back for verification of offers. Often scammers will provide a local number which is directed to call centres which may be based in other countries. Other consumers have reported being told they had been specially selected by the Australian Government, along with 17,000 others, to receive a refund of $5284 in bank fees. In order to receive this refund, they were told they had to complete a Western Union money transfer for $199 and call the scammers back and quote reference number RS990 to advise the transfer had taken place. Then, they were told, they would receive their refunded

bank fees. The consumer received a return call from the scammers, asking why money had not been transferred. “What we are seeing is the combined threat of increasingly sophisticated scams, increasingly pushy scammers and increasing frequency of calls,” said Mr Holstein. He said people should warn their family and friends, work colleagues and neighbours to beware of unsolicited approaches. “Be scam smart,” he said. “Hang up, call Fair Trading on 13 32 20 and warn others.”

wenty residents living adjacent to the Mirreen Ave car park at Davistown have signed a petition objecting to the total darkness of this area.

The petition stated that the total darkness is a major attraction for some young people bringing cars, alcohol and noise at all hours.

proposed for the end of April this year and to date, no work has commenced. Gosford Council Agenda P.25, 23 Aug 2011

Expansion gets endorsement

Research shows diabetes increase ew research from the Australian Diabetes Council has shown an increase in diabetes in every electorate in NSW over the past five years including Gosford, Terrigal and The Entrance.

N

G

osford Council has agreed to endorse the preparation of a planning proposal for the expansion of Point Clare Medical Centre.

The planning proposal will request that the land be rezoned to Business and will be forwarded to the Department of Planning and Infrastructure requesting a Gateway determination. The practice was established in 1989 and due to increasing demands, the owners wish to expand the premises and have acquired the adjoining property to the north.

According to the applicant’s report, Point Clare has become an increasingly important focus for retail, commercial and community activities. “This Practice provides medical services to the community and also is an accredited teaching practice for medical students.” The practice has also recently been offered funding for its expansion

under the Primary Care Infrastructure Grants Program from the Federal Government’s General Practice Super Clinics Branch, and according to the applicant, in order to take advantage of this funding the practice needs to expand. “This will also offer a better level of service from the practice and ability to offer more medical services

in a more contemporary setting. “There is not enough room in the existing premises to support the requirements now demanded by the community. “The proposal would provide for a new building and better on-site car parking arrangements that would benefit both the practitioners and their patients.” Gosford Council Agenda ENV.52, 2 Aug 2011

The Entrance has increased by 32.61 per cent, Gosford by 26.76 per cent and Terrigal by 24.01 per cent in a five year period from 2005 to 2010, This increase in diabetes puts an ever greater focus on the things that all Australians can do to help prevent the development of diabetes and its complications. “The good news is, Type 2 diabetes, which represents 85-90 per cent of people with diabetes, can be avoided in almost 60 per cent of cases and many of the serious complications of diabetes such as heart disease and blindness, may be avoided through healthy lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise,’’ said Australian Diabetes Council CEO Ms Nicola Stokes. This Diabetes Awareness

Week, the Australian Diabetes Council focused on eye health, one of the serious complications that can arise from diabetes. Left untreated, diabetes can cause vision loss and even blindness – but through optimal management, up to 98 per cent of vision loss can be prevented through early detection and treatment. “Many of the complications of diabetes can be managed and prevented. “Much of the vision loss that people experience from diabetic retinopathy can be avoided with early detection and treatment, which is why regular eye tests are so important,” said Ms Stokes. the more likely we are to match each child to the right carer or family for their individual needs.” Ms Vickers added that while it is great when people can make a full-time commitment to fostering, for those who can’t, a commitment of even one weekend a month can make

The Sustainable Cities program is a Keep Australia Beautiful NSW initiative to recognise outstanding environmental initiatives implemented by local government authorities, schools and community groups and businesses while raising public awareness of a range of environmental issues affecting metropolitan NSW. Keep Australia Beautiful NSW CEO Mr Peter McLean congratulated Central Mangrove Public School for their “Learning for Sustainability – meeting the Challenge” project. The project linked key learning areas, the School’s Environment Management Plan and numerous handson activities to promote sustainability living practices and increase knowledge and skills in biodiversity.

This project included worm farming, waste wise gardening, composting, recycling, tree planting, bush regeneration, water tanks, hot house construction and solar panels installations. “Central Mangrove Public School has been working on a sustainability project that represented a five year plan for the school,” said Mr McLean. “It has allowed the school to commence with waste and then move on to more complex situations and solutions. “The whole school project and approach to environmental improvement is clear and the high level of community participation is impressive,” he said. The judging panel was made up of parents of younger and older children, students of various ages and marketing, design and photography professionals. Centre for Marketing Schools director Dr Linda Vining said: “The digital era has created new behaviours and the judges were looking for authentic engagement that propels a school beyond the competition online.” “Central Coast Grammar School’s website has set the benchmark for other school websites around the world.” Development and Community Relations manager Ms Christine Hodgkinson received the award on behalf of the School and spoke to conference delegates. “I can’t speak highly enough of the creative culture at local agency Treehouse Creative in Gosford, whose partnership with Organise Internet has created a captivating

website and prospectus that connect with our community in a fresh and personable way,” said Ms Hodgkinson. Headmaster Mr Bill Low said: “The award is a very significant one for Central Coast Grammar School as it places us on the international stage. “In addition it is a very good demonstration of the things that can be achieved when schools develop good collaboration with innovative partners in the private sector.” Highlights include an expansive virtual tour and video content that tells real stories about real people. Convenient features allow parents to print enrolment forms, request a prospectus or book an Open Morning visit online, when it suits them, from their home or office. Spring into

Spring into Gosford

I

f you are not in Gosford for its annual ‘Spring into Gosford’ event, then you are probably in the wrong place and missing out on all the fun.

The event is organised by the Imperial Shopping Centre and Gosford Business Improvement District [GBID] and there are over $13,000 in prizes to be won.. Prizes galore, cash grabs and entertainment are some of the incentives for you to get involved. It all kicks off with a One Day Sale on Thursday, September 1 when retailers are encouraged to dress up their shop fronts and/or themselves in a colourful spring fever theme and customers have the chance to win great prizes. Spruikers will be calling out

the specials in the main central business district and in Imperial Shopping Centre. With six, $1000 shopping sprees, plus a 47” LCD TV, a cabinet to suit and a modular lounge suite with ottoman to be won over a 4 week competition period, you would be insane not to be in it. Prize draws occur on September 9, 16, 23 and 30. Customers will be entitled to one entry form for every $10 spent with a maximum of 12 entry forms in one transaction. Naturally, this rewards people who spend more - a good time to stop saving for a

little while and start spending! Shoppers are required to place their completed and legible entry form in a barrel at Imperial Shopping Centre or William Street Mall during the competition period. Entry forms will be distributed to participating stores in Gosford and two, $200 prize winners will be drawn each week of the four week period. The shopping spree winners will be drawn on the last day of the competition, Friday September 30. The first winner drawn from the barrel on that day will win

the LCD TV and cabinet and a modular lounge suite with an ottoman. You can even select your own colour from the range at Nik & Jane’s Furniture and Bedding Express in Erina. The next 6 entries drawn from the barrel will each win a $1,000 shopping spree. The winners will be advised by telephone and mail and will be advised that they must conduct their one hour, $1,000 shopping spree, on Saturday October 8 at 11am. The shopping spree winners will have one week to look

by Val Bridge

around Gosford to put their shopping list together and then on the day of the shopping spree each winner will be allocated a shopping assistant to pay for the purchases and help carry items. Also on Saturday, October 8, in conjunction with Gosford city markets, shoppers will have the chance to share in $3,000 cash from the money machine in Kibble Park. Customers making a purchase of $10 or more in Gosford City between 9am and 12noon on October 8 will be eligible to enter the draw. The Grab for cash will take

place at 12.05pm in Kibble Park. Customer entries will be drawn randomly from the barrel. Winners must be present at the draw, as they will each be given the chance to spend 30 seconds in the money machine to grab their share of $3,000 in cash. Winners will be drawn until all the money in the machine has been won. Gosford Central Community News photographers will be on hand to ‘shoot’ the winners and publish results.

Dance crew teaches at Gosford oyalty Crew, the talented hip-hop dancers and half time entertainment for the Sydney Kings, had the red carpet rolled out for them on Tuesday, August 23, when they visited Gosford to teach free dance classes in Kibble Park.

R

The dancers, branded “the future” by Sunrise presenter David Koch, learned their skills from Justice Crew at free Musicians Making A Difference (MMAD) classes two years ago. They are now highly sought after entertainers in their own right, having performed Australiawide, including an opening performance for international Hip Hop stars Bone Thugz-N-Harmony. “We were taught how to dance at MMAD programs

just like this and we want to be able to give back and help other young people achieve their dreams,” said Crew leader Aron Koroheke. The Musicians Making A Difference (MMAD) outreach initiative aims to provide free creative programs to engage, educate and empower young people to reach their full potential, especially those who cannot afford to pay for classes. “We want to provide accessible and inclusive avenues for young people to get connected to

the community through a language that they understand – like music, dance or social media,” said team-member Ms Emma O’Connell. “We’ve had amazing support from volunteers like Royalty Crew who want to make a difference and we’re always looking for more positive role models to help run the outreach program,” she said. W

History Week also known as Eat History, from September 3 to 11, will be a smorgasbord of delectable delights. Gosford Township has an appetizing history dating back before 1788 and later becoming known as Brisbane Water home of the coastal Guringai (Ku-ring-

gai) people. The Guringai occupied an area which extended from the northern side of Sydney Harbour, then along the coast to the lower reaches of Lake Macquarie. The Darkingung people occupied a huge area, reaching west of Mangrove Creek to Rylstone, north to Cessnock and the Wollombi

areas Mt. Yengo, in the Darkingung country, remains a highly significant cultural and religious site to local tribes. By 1826 work had commenced on the Great North Rd, linking Sydney with Newcastle and the newly settled agricultural lands of the Hunter Valley.

Incorporated from F Wheeler & Co which was established in 1888. Became Chapman & Frazer Real Estate in 1956. Chapman & Frazer Real Estate Pty Ltd has a local history in Gosford spanning 123 years and 26 years ago the business was developed into a specialist Commercial and Industrial Agency with local focus on Sales, Leasing and Management. At that time the road represented the greatest public works and engineering project undertaken in the colony using mainly the labour of convict iron gangs. Simple hand tools were used by convicts working in the most primitive of conditions. This masterpiece of colonial engineering, with massive buttressed stone walls and elaborate drainage systems, was 240km long. The road, finished in 1836, was little used by early travellers, and some sections still remain little altered from their original appearance. In 1839 Governor Gipps named the town of Gosford. It is believed to have been named after Archibald Acheson who was the second Earl of Gosford (1776-1849), and NSW Governor Gipps served with him in Canada. William Davis brought his family to live at Brisbane Water. This event led in time to the establishment of the Davis shipbuilding dynasty. The Davis’s were

responsible for an overwhelming majority of the 500 vessels constructed in the district between 1829 and 1953. The year 1923 saw streetlights switched on in Gosford for the first time. The first electricity installation in the district was located on the corner of Erina and Watt Sts, Gosford, and operated from 6pm to midnight and by the turn of 1929 Gosford High School had been built. James Manning, of Gosford, ran a successful business from 160 Mann St, Gosford, servicing the district cutting and styling Ladies and Gents hair, also selling tobacco supplies. On April 12, 1930, he purchased the hairdressing business off M Good. James moved his business and purchased the newly built premises at 172 Mann St in the spring of 1932 from Mr Delany and continued his hairdressing and tobacco business. Since then the business has never moved and is now run by Sue Tyrell [nee Manning] as Manning Sports Store celebrating 80

years in Gosford. The pictures seen here are of Mann St then [circa 1950s] and now, so named after Gother Mann. The Mann family, also pictured, date unknown. Established in December 1950 the Brisbane Water Historical Society, affiliated to the Royal Australian Historical Society [RAHS] and the National Trust of Australia NSW branch, was formed and is happy to welcome new people for ‘cottage duty’ one day a month for ground maintenance of the Henry Kendall Cottage in West Gosford. Situated on two hectares of park like grounds the cottage is one of a few remaining built with sandstone in the Gosford area and houses many historical artifacts of a bygone era. The society meets every third Tuesday of the month at 1pm within the museum and welcomes coach tours, school outings, and the general public to view the many interesting aspects that, over the years, have formed our history.

s part of History Week, Beach Farm Kincumber will host its annual Open Day and French Country Market on Saturday, September 10, from 9am to 4pm.

A

As well as the open day, Beach Farm will celebrate its 100th birthday with stalls and entertainment on the day.

“We have sourced lots more products to add to our already selective and specialised range to present an outstanding event for

this special birthday,” said Beach Farm proprietor Ms Marian French. Visitors will be able to see and taste the French

experience, meet new designers, buy fresh local produce and browse to a gentle background of French music. Enjoy tea and coffee in the garden and view this turn of the century cottage,

or bring a rug and picnic in the park, which was part of the original 1891 grant sold to Henry Mathew in 1911. Entry fee to Beach Farm will be $2 with children under supervision free with proceeds going toward

supporting the local Volunteer Rural Fire Service and Children’s Medical Research Foundation.

A story of the old Kincumber Road.

T

oday, the Kincumber road has been upgraded, but in the 1950s it was another story.

Sealed cars and drivers of the era enjoyed the scenery and were lucky to maintain 40 km per hour over its bumpy and curvaceous course, uphill and down dale. Around 1958 my grandmother, Vi Bates from Springfield, was quietly putting along its course with a friend in her old Ford Prefect when they came across an even slower vehicle. It was a large truck carrying a house, of all things, on its trailer and making even slower progress. Now Vi was a lady of infinite patience and content

to sit behind while she chatted pleasantly with her passenger. Up behind her comes Mr Dash and Dart. Beep, beep, beep, he sounds with his horn. It’s an impossible situation and highly dangerous to even attempt to pass. The beeping continued, spoiling the pleasant drive, until Vi’s passenger could tolerate it no longer. She wound down her window leaned way out and looked back with a disdainful glare. At the top of her voice she shouted: “What do you expect her to do, drive in the

back door and out the front (of the house)?” Peace resumes and they continue their drive to a long straight where all can pass the truck and its load with safety. My grandmother later admitted she nearly ran off the road laughing at the incident. Vi Bates was the Central Coast lawn bowls pairs champion in 1963 with wellknown Gosford identity Maureen Brown. A legendary couple still remembered and loved. Email, 1 Jul 2011 Bob Piper, Hawker

Craig Lowe of Avoca was awarded $1000 and represented Australia in indoor volleyball at the World University Summer Games in China from August 11.

His selection for this team was based on his performances in previous international competition, including tours with the Australian Institute of Sport

to Europe since 2008, as well as his involvement in training camps and competitions as part of the National Junior Men’s Volleyball Program since

2007. Lake Haven resident Perry Wall received $1000 to attend the UCI BMX World Championships held in Denmark from July 28 to 31. Perry was selected for the team after winning the over-50 men’s race at the National Championships. Cassidy Turner of Hamlyn Terrace and Tumbi Umbi’s Mackenzie Harris were both awarded $500 each to participate in the School Sports Australia Swimming and Diving Championships held in Melbourne from July 30. Cassidy was the only athlete with a disability from the Central Coast to be selected for the team. Both girls earned their place after outstanding performances at regional and state events.

he Gosford City Rebels under-14 Womens basketball team and under-16 Mens team will compete against the top four teams in the state, for the chance to be crowned State Champions for this year, on the weekend of September 3 and 4.

T

The under-14 women side have had a stellar season winning the NSW Central Junior League crown undefeated, the NSW Country Championships crown, and are the second ranked NSW side heading to the Australian under-14 Club National Championships in Darwin during October. “The girls have performed strongly and consistently all season, and thoroughly deserve their chance at the State Championships,” said Gosford City Basketball manager Mr Matt Johnston. “They have been training two and sometimes three times a week, spending time on their shooting techniques and fitness on Saturdays and Sundays with coach Stuart Johnston. “They are more than capable of making the State Final this year, however, will not be without a fight with NSW first ranked Norths Bears side in their way,” he said. The under-16 men’s side have also been quite dominant over the season. They went undefeated in their regular season Central Junior League competition, before falling at the final hurdle in the grand final by five to a

relentless Newcastle side. They were crowned NSW Country Champions, winning the final by four against a spirited and determined Illawarra Hawks side. The team now head to the State Championships with a full complement of players, hoping to ruffle a few feathers against two Sydney metropolitan sides and a Canberra team who are competing in the NSW Championships for the first time in a decade. “It’s been an up and down season,” said Johnston. “Obviously losing the CJL grand final was very disappointing for the whole group, however since gaining the Wildcard into the State Championships, I haven’t been able to fault the boys’ efforts. “We have focused on the fact that we have been given a second chance, and we are giving it a heck of a go - all the way to the State final if possible. “As long as the group maintains its trust I think we have what it takes to go all the way,” he said. L

ocal resident Matthew Dawson has recently returned from the Australian U21 National Hockey Championships held in Perth July 5-16, where he represented the NSW squad.

Dawson, a 17 year old from Killarney Vale, was

the youngest member of the squad, yet outperformed many of his older team mates during the tournament, according to head coach Matthew Smith. Dawson also placed 2nd in the player’s poll, behind Matthew Willis. “Matthew’s performances over the championships were well above my expectations as the transition from junior competition to U21s is often

a difficult one, yet he showed that he could compete at this level quite comfortably,” said Smith. “Matthew should be proud of his achievements and I have no doubt, with his willingness to learn, he will be a key part of future representative teams.” The NSW side was defeated 2 – 1 in the finals by the WA squad.

Bradman is representing NSW in two events – the 100m sprint and the 4 x 100m relay. Bradman’s selection on the NSW team follows his outstanding performance at the All Schools State Championship held in July. Bradman finished second in the 100m sprint, with a time of 14.4 seconds. He also competed in the long jump, finishing ninth. These inspiring results and nationallevel recognition come after Bradman’s all-round dedication to sports.

His growing list of sporting achievement includes: ‘player with the most potential’ for 2010 by Woy Woy Roosters Football Club; ‘junior player of the year’ for 2010 by the Peninsula Touch Football Association; and, Gold and Silver medals in beach sprinting and flags for Umina Surf Club at State Titles over the past two years. Bradman Best is a wonderful ambassador for sporting achievement on the Central Coast. Representing NSW at the previously mentioned championships will be a further opportunity for the Central Coast’s sporting flag to fly high. However, travelling to Darwin will be an expensive exercise for Bradman and his family. To assist, St John the Baptist Catholic Primary School will run some fundraising activities. Also, Samantha Buckley from Umina Beach Netball

Club has stepped in to help by approaching local businesses for sponsorship. If you are a local business owner or an individual who would like to sponsor Bradman, please email Bradman’s parents, Tobi and Roger Best on tobi.best15@ optusnet.com.au. Any support you can offer will be greatly appreciated. “Our school is tremendously proud of how hard Bradman has worked to reach this level,” said publicity officer for St John the Baptist Catholic Primary School Magaret Channing. “Natural sporting abilities will take a young person so far, but we all know it takes unswerving motivation, dedication and determination to compete at the elite level. “We at St John the Baptist Catholic Primary School Woy Woy believe that Bradman Best is well on his way to fulfilling this potential.”

It’s fitting that Sherriff should etch his name into the Central Coast record books in such a way, after outstanding personal achievements over the past eighteen months in winning the Australian Singles title, representing Australia at Commonwealth Games in Delhi and then winning the World Champion of Champion Singles crown. section and a berth into the semi-final. The Wyong trio of Stephen Elliott, Ray Bourne and Craig Bell displayed good form to win Section 2 with a telling victory (23-14) over another strong Ettalong combination in Mark Endacott, Graham Maier and Tony Laguzza to set up a showdown against Sherriff in a semi-final. But once again, the Ettalong boys proved too strong over the Wyong trio with a 22-14 win for a spot in the final Ettalong were again to the forefront in Section 3 with John Wiblen, Danny McNeilly and Lee Trethowan recording strong wins especially in the Section final over Lou Robertson, Ron Sanday and Dean Wilson from Bateau Bay (36-10). The Everglades combination of Alan Joss, James Roberts and Darren Morrison were in good touch in Section 4 with solid wins in the early rounds and

a convincing win in the Section final over Gosford City’s Wayne Balfe, Allan Lewin and Guy Robins (2516) to progress into the semi-final against Ettalong’s Lee Trethowan. The Everglades combination had Trethowan’s measure to lead 21-13 after 18 ends, but in a never say die performance, the Ettalong boys fought back to tie the game 23 all after 25 ends but then dropped a heart breaking three on the extra end for Morrison’s Everglades team to sneak into the final. The final between the “young gun” skips of

Sherriff and Morrison was reminiscent of their many tussles in the junior ranks having both shared centre stage at the RNSWBA Presentation Night in 2005, with Sherriff being named the Bowler of the Year and Morrison being named the Junior of the Year. Morrison’s team of Allan Joss and James Roberts started strongly and led 9-2 after six ends and it looked as if an upset was on the cards but champion players have that ability to fight back and Sherriff’s team of Harley McDonald and John Roberts won the next six ends to lead 11-9 after 13 ends. The gauntlet had been thrown down by Sherriff’s team who were unrelenting with a telling four on the 17 end to establish a 17-11 mini-break. The outcome was ominous and the Sherriff combination proved too strong over the closing ends to record a convincing 24-13 victory. Aron Sherriff had achieved the elusive “Grand Slam”, and he was the first to thank his various team mates in Tony Laguzza, Lee Trethowan, Harley McDonald and John Roberts who had all been part of his success. Aron also made special mention of the Ettalong Club management and the Ettalong members who made his move to the Club so easy and enjoyable which has contributed to his good form and today’s special achievement.

Finals fever his weekend will see the start of the finals play offs for Rugby Union, which will be held at Woy Woy Oval, and the Central Coast Premier League, to be held at Pluim Park, Lisarow.

n Saturday, August 13, in front of a sold out crowd of 500, the Little Goodie Two Skates once more skated their way through an action-packed one hour bout to defeat the Axles Of Evil at Niagra Park.

O

Once again, this new derby league gave the crowd something to get loud for, with some huge spills, tactical plays and over the top displays of derbiality – which is exactly what the audience wanted. First half saw the Goodies and the Evils fight neck and neck, with each team vying for a lucky break. That break came for the Goodies when one of the

Evil’s strongest jammers (point scorer) Allure ‘N’ Kill, was sent to the bin, allowing Anyarism to do some serious scoring. This lead soon increased, with the score at halftime reaching 66 to 38 – with the Goodies in the lead. The second half of the bout saw the Axles Of Evil come back with a lot of enthusiasm. They used some strong

walling tactics that threw the Little Goodie Two Skates off a little, but not for long. Once they had the taste of winning, the Goodies could not be stopped and, after a massive 14 point round by Goodies jammer Lickety Split, it was clear who the winner would be. The final score for Saturday night was 134 to 91 – but the Axles Of Evil have warned that they will

be back. The third bout for the Central Coast Roller Girls will be held on the Saturday, September 3. This is expected to be another sell out success for the league and with some team changes and strategic plays to be updated, you can expect one hell of a match.
