Freewater censured but not silenced t a meeting on Tuesday, September 6, Gosford Council resolved to censure Cr Peter Freewater for code of conduct breaches
A
Cr Freewater must provide a written apology to his fellow councillors as well as make a public apology at an open council meeting. Council has also forwarded its findings to the director general of the Division of Local Government for consideration. The decision comes following an investigation by an independent conduct reviewer regarding two separate incidents in February Cr Peter Freewater said he regrets his comments regarding calling Council’s weekend workshop a “junket, completely unnecessary and a waste of ratepayers money”, claiming they were”sensationalised in the media”. “I was simply providing my opinion that although we don’t have our own golf course, Council does have meeting rooms and we don’t need to spend 10s of thousands of rate-payers dollars to meet at a luxury
resort for a weekend. Cr Chris Burke said the Council has done all that it can in regard to Cr Freewater’s breaches. “All stones have been unturned, we’ve done the right process and gone the right way and now we just have to wait to see what they come back with,” said Cr Burke. “We didn’t take this lightly, the eight councillors. “When we put this up we wanted to make sure we were on the right track, so we put it out to an external reviewer,” he said. Cr Craig Doyle agreed and said as councillors “we accept the code of conduct, it’s an honorable product and we have to conduct ourselves appropriately”. “It’s a two edged sword, if you challenge the notion you have to be willing to accept the investigation and the findings. But Cr Freewater said he “completely reject[s] the findings of the so-called
independent reviewer”. “How can a solicitor repeatedly hired by the council and briefed by the Council be independent of Council? “In 2007 I promised the people of Gosford that if I were elected to Council I would fight corruption and mismanagement. “I have proven to them that I can be trusted to honour my promises,” he said. Cr Freewater said he is currently seeking legal advice to “challenge Council’s decision and possibly sue the Council for defamation.” Cr Doyle, however, said that Council considers “any breach of the code as an exceptionally serious manner. “We have to live by code. “When one of our own breaks the code, I guess this shows that we’re not prepared to accept that either. “Referring it to the director general is the highest we can take it,” he said. The complaint was lodged
with the general manager by Cr’s Laurie Maher, Craig Doyle, Chris Burke, Chris Holstein, Jim Macfadyen, Vicki Scott and Jeff Strickson regarding the conduct of Cr Freewater in an interview he did on ABC Radio on February 14 and a report in the Express Advocate on February 16. Cr Terri Latella did not sign the complaint. The councillors said Cr Freewater showed no respect for the Council or individuals and that this disrespect, using false information, breaching of confidentiality, undermining the authority and reputation of Council and its staff amounted to breached of the Council’s Code of Conduct. Council said it will be making no further comment on this issue. Gosford to see improvements from first Liberal budget he people of Gosford will see improved roads and education as a result of the Liberals and Nationals first Budget, according to member for Gosford Mr Chris Holstein.

Mr Holstein said the Budget delivers, over the next four years, 900 more teachers, 2475 more nurses and 550 police officers and a record infrastructure investment to address the building backlog left by Labor. This year it equates to 200 teachers, 150 police officers and 940 nurses. Spending on hospitals and health capital works over the next four years is $4.7 billion – 50 per cent higher than over the last four years. “Locally this means $17.4 million for the new Gosford Regional Cancer Centre and $500,000 to commence planning for the return of the Woy Woy Rehabilitation Unit,” said Mr Holstein. Gosford Hospital will also receive two special care nursery cots at a cost of $800,000. Gosford residents will also see the Gosford Public School relocation completed in 2014, an upgrade of Gosford TAFE with $1.3 million allocated in 2011-12 and due to be completed next year at a cost of $3.4 million.
$2.5 million has also been allocated for this year and next for the upgrades of local high schools as well as school maintenance to increase by nearly 11 per cent on last year. $1 million has been set aside for investigations into the upgrade of Woy Woy Rd as the first stage of a four year, $30 million project. The West Gosford intersection has been allocated $9 million to continue planning and preconstruction and $500,000 will go toward safety improvements on Wiseman Ferry Rd as the first stage of a four year, $5 million commitment. Gosford Police Station is due to be completed next year with $4.2 million allocated and $600,000 for new villas in Gosford for people with a disability. “The NSW Liberals and Nationals’ first Budget delivers for Gosford by allocating funds for the commencement of the projects committed to during the election and I look forward to seeing these projects finalised during this term,” said Mr Holstein.
“Rebuilding NSW means repairing what was left behind, improving services and building the infrastructure the people of NSW need. “The NSW Liberals and Nationals Government is very conscious that if we don’t get expenses under control, there are no funds to fix the services people rely on every day,” he said. In The Entrance electorate, $2.5 million has been allocated for the relocation of Gosford Horticulture Institute in Ourimbah. In the Terrigal electorate $20 million has been set aside to continue major work on the four lane widening of the Central Coast Highway between Matcham Rd, Erina Heights and Ocean View Dr, Wamberal. Mardi-Mangrove link complete
T
he first drops of water were pumped along the $120 million Mardi-Mangrove Link, the Central Coast’s largest infrastructure project in decades, on Wednesday, August 31.
The system was officially turned on at a special ceremony at Mardi Dam by Wyong Shire Council mayor Cr Doug Eaton, Gosford Cr Chris Burke, Gosford Mayor Cr Laurie Maher and Parliamentary secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water Senator Don Farrell. The ceremony was also attended by current and past Gosford City and Wyong Shire councillors and local members of parliament. Mayor Cr Eaton said the event was a momentous occasion and a great local achievement. “The Mardi-Mangrove Link is the biggest piece of water infrastructure to be built on the Central Coast in 25 years. “This event brings to a close almost three years of planning and 17 months of construction. “Today marks the day when the work of over
1000 local staff and contactors has delivered increased water security for the Central Coast. “I commend all involved and I sincerely thank the Yarramalong community for their patience and support during construction,” he said. Mayor Cr Maher said he is thrilled that the Central Coast has a more secure water supply with Mardi and Mangrove Creek Dams now linked by this important infrastructure. “We all lived through dire times a couple of years ago when total dam storage fell to 12 percent. “Mangrove Creek Dam is 16 times larger than our other two dams combined. “By transferring water for storage from Mardi Dam, Wyong River and Ourimbah Creek, this project is a good insurance policy against this situation ever happening again. “With the link now
operational and provided there is average rainfall we expect dam levels at Mangrove Creek Dam to rise to 70 per cent within the next five years. “Today is an historic day for the Central Coast and I am honoured to be here to witness the beginning of a better water future for our region,” said Mayor Cr Maher. The Mardi-Mangrove Link project is an initiative of Gosford City and Wyong Shire councils with Australian Government funding of $80.3 million provided through the Water Smart Australia Program –Water for the Future initiative, and an additional $40 million combined from the two Councils. Change imminent at Gosford Chamber AGM he Gosford City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. is due to hold its annual general meeting on Wednesday, September 14, in the Gosford Golf Course Function Room, Racecourse Rd, Gosford at 1pm.
T
Nominations are closed and new board members are to be appointed. It is understood that current president Mr Rod Dever will again stand for the position, but long standing vice president Ms Deborah Warwick will not, and nor will treasurer Mr David Bowler. After a decade or more on the board, Ms Warwick will now concentrate on more pressing matters and said she wishes the chamber well in its future direction. On leaving the chamber board, Ms Warwick said: “I will continue my support for the chamber and my decision for leaving is
based purely on giving others the chance of board membership.” “After a ten year or so stint on the board, it’s now time for me to concentrate on other involvements I have to help realise the future aspirations for Gosford City,” she said. Ill health and the need to concentrate on his property responsibilities is also forcing another long standing board member Mr Ron Hinksman to decline standing again and StarFM executive Ms Donna Lalor is taking a sabbatical after serving six years. Historically, the Gosford Chamber has been
instrumental for many positive changes to Gosford City. However, the past few years have seen the emergence of the Gosford Business Improvement District (GBID) as custodians and promoters of Gosford City. Questioning the relevance of the Gosford Chamber of Commerce is Mr Bob Bourne, founding member of the informal group of commercial property owners known as the Gosford Property Owners Organisation (GOSPOO), claiming twelve members who purport to own 70 per cent of Mann St.
Deborah Warwick
Of the informal group, Mr Bourne said: “Our regular meetings with Gosford City Council are exclusive of
the Gosford Chamber and discussions we have on the DLEP are separate to any that may be held with the Gosford Chamber of Commerce.” It was this informal group that led the way to the Gosford CBD Section 94 contributions being reduced from three per cent to one per cent, in an effort to attract developers to Gosford. The May edition of The Central Coast Business Review mentioned that “the only chamber on the Coast that appears to involve itself on matters of importance with meaningful and intelligent inputs is the Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, with others seeing themselves as no more than networking
groups”. Current Gosford Chamber president Mr Rod Dever said: “The chamber is far more than a networking group and represents a broader range of issues than just Mann St.” “Whilst I acknowledge the work that GOSPOO do, the Chamber also has discussions with local and state governments on the DLEP and holds regular discussions on issues that are broader than the CBD, the West Gosford Intersection being an example of this. “We work for our members as best we can to achieve best outcomes,” Dever said. Funding for emergency accommodation mergency accommodation on the Central Coast will be bolstered with federal government funding of $890,000 towards the $2.2 million refurbishment of the Coast Community Centre.
E
Federal Minister for Regional Australia Mr Simon Crean announced the funding for the rebuild to Coast Shelter as part of the first round of the Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF), worth almost $1 billion. Through the refurbishment, the centre will be a more functional facility offering
improved access to many people in need of urgent assistance. Free services offered at the refurbished Coast Community Centre will include meals, shower and laundry facilities, food parcels, a community meeting room, conference room and referrals. “When completed later this
year, the Coast Community Centre in North Gosford, will provide a place for the most vulnerable and marginalised to help them with the difficulties they encounter,” Mr Crean said. Member for Robertson Ms Deborah O’Neill said she was delighted the funding was going to such a great project.
“SPRING HAS FINALLY ARRIVED“ DON’T LET THESE PESTS RUIN THE FUN and endanger you your family, y, friends a and nd pets
“I want to pay tribute to Gosford mayor Laurie Maher and Coast Shelter for the vital work they do in our community in helping the most vulnerable and disadvantaged,” said Ms O’Neill. “I couldn’t be prouder that this funding – the first under the Regional Development Australia Fund – is going to Coast Shelter. “So many community members have praised Coast Shelter’s work to me, I am delighted that this federal funding will help Coast Shelter continue the great job its doing. “The project will also generate jobs during the construction and sustain employment into the future,”
she said. The project is endorsed by Regional Development Australia (RDA) Central Coast. The RDAF program supports the infrastructure needs and economic growth of Australia’s regions. It is designed to leverage state, commonwealth, local government, private and notfor-profit investments. In round one, $150 million in grant funding was provided to 35 projects around Australia leveraging a total of around $418 million in project costs. RDA committees played a major role in working with local communities to identify projects that were consistent with their regional plans. Independent Advisory
Panel chair of the, Mr Christian Zahra, will assist with a review of RDAF Round One and provide recommendations to the Minister to consider implementing for Round Two and subsequent rounds of the program. This review will consider ways in which the impact of the program might be strengthened and the application process streamlined. Round Two of the RDAF program will be valued at $150 million, with applications to open in November. Media Release, 7 Sep 2011 Matt Pulford, Office of Deborah O’Neill MP

Council funding for flora festival osford Council has resolved to underwrite the Australian Springtime Flora Festival for this year up to the amount of $25,000 in order for the event to proceed, meanwhile the NSW State Government is investigating funding for the event.
G
Council agreed that no future underwriting agreement for the Festival will be entered into, but a business plan will be presented to Council with any future application for financial support. Within one month of the conclusion of the event, the Australian Springtime Flora Festival Committee are to provide to Council the complete audited financial accounts for this year’s event and any claim relating to the underwriting agreement. Council also requested that Wyong Shire be asked to provide funding for the Flora Festival, as it is an
event that benefits the entire Central Coast. The $25,000 underwrite is in addition to the $7500 in funding already being provided by Council to the Festival. The resolution was supported by all councillors present at the ordinary meeting of Tuesday, September 6, except Cr Craig Doyle, who said he doesn’t believe it is Council’s responsibility to pick up the financial tab. “We’re not the cash cow for this event or for this organization,” he said. “The bottom line is we are not there with the cheque book ready to go.
“We always get caught at the last minute having to pick up the financial tab. “It isn’t our event, it’s nothing to do with us,” he said. Cr Jeff Strickson disagreed and said he is here for the people. “Anything that makes the people prosperous in Gosford, I’m all for,” said Cr Strickson. According to Council’s report, Council was approached by Central Coast Tourism’s chief executive officer who requested Council to reconsider underwriting the event after it was refused at a meeting on Tuesday,
August 23. The request was made on the basis that due to a possible shortfall in the Festival’ budget, it was likely to be cancelled, if Council could not underwrite the event. Council had previously underwritten the event in 2002 for a five year period and then again in 2007 for another five year period for non-insurable events outside the control of the Australian Springtime Flora
Festival Committee. Gosford Council was informed that previous financial support was withdrawn by sponsors and hence, the revenue held by the Committee and the forecast income from the event would not cover the estimated cost for running of the event. Council said it recognises the significance of the event at a regional level and the withdrawal of sponsorship from a number of key
stakeholders has put in jeopardy the current and future Festivals. Council said underwriting the event for 2011 up to the amount of $25,000 in addition to the $7,500 already being given, would assist with bridging the gap with financial assistance previously provided by other stakeholders. Later in the day Ms O’Neill joined the minister for Mental Health and Aged Care Mr Mark Butler on a visit to the youth mental health service, Headspace, in Gosford. “The Gosford Headspace is the second busiest in the country after the Gold Coast, which is pretty amazing considering the Gold Coast’s annual schoolies,” said Ms O’Neill. “The minister left very impressed with the comprehensive integrated
system of care that he saw. “I’m sure there will be lessons there for the Federal Government as we roll out our record $2 billion investment in mental health across the country,” she said. From Gosford Ms O’Neill and minister Butler travelled to Woy Woy for a flying visit to the Woy Woy Community Aged Care facility where they met residents and presented certificates of attainment to staff. There was also a special Certificate of Appreciation for 10 year-old Alicia Karton, who visits Woy Woy

One resident told staff after the visit, “It was great he came to see us and to hear what he had to say.” Minister Butler also held a two-hour forum at Gosford Golf Club as part of the Federal Government’s national conversation on healthy and positive ageing. Around 60 residents quizzed the minister for more than an hour-and-ahalf on the challenges facing the aged care sector. Topics included standards of care, workforce planning, and how to help older Australians to stay in their own homes as long as possible. Pink Ribbon Breakfast Ambassador for 2011 Rhonda Burchmore is encouraging everyone to register online to host a breakfast with real benefits. “Whether you breakfast like a rock star, on the run, or opt to stay in your pyjamas, hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast is a fabulous way to get together with friends or family and raise much needed funds for breast cancer research.” A fundraising initiative of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Pink Ribbon Breakfasts raised over two million dollars in October last year, with Gosford region residents hosting breakfasts. The aim for this year is to exceed this amount in order to fund even more research projects for the prevention and cure of breast cancer.
National Breast Cancer Foundation CEO Ms Carole Renouf congratulated the Gosford community on their efforts so far and once again encouraged local residents to get together and host a breakfast in order to achieve the goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. “Zero deaths by 2030 is an ambitious goal, and I urge you to host your own breakfast this year,” she said. “If you’ve hosted a breakfast before, aim to make this year bigger and better than last year. “Or if this is your first breakfast, we have lots of new ideas of how you can make your event memorable and a fundraising success.” Media Release, 29 Aug 2011 Chloe Turner, Professional Public Relations

The funds will go directly toward a planned Family Room at Gosford Hospital which has just been approved by the Central Coast Local Health District. The new Family Room at the Gosford Hospital will provide a comfortable haven within the hospital for local families with children undergoing medical treatment to take a break and relax. McDonald’s Gosford Licensee Mr Ron Mussalli said that McDonald’s is proud to support such a worthy cause and explained how important a Family Room will be for local families receiving treatment at Gosford Hospital. “This important facility will help keep parents and other family members close to their child who is sick or injured in hospital and is designed to help relieve the stress on parents at this difficult time,”
he said. “We are aiming to have the Family Room operational by the end of 2012 and have proposed its location to be in an area adjacent to the Children’s Ward.” Helping Hands were available to purchase for $1 in 14 McDonald’s restaurants in the Central Coast region including; Erina, Erina Fair, Gosford Imperial, West Gosford, Wyoming and Kincumber. “I’m really delighted that the Helping Hands fundraiser has always been received so well by the Central Coast community. The facilities were paid for by $3.229 million in funding that the school received under the National School Pride (NSP) program and the Primary Schools for the 21st Century (P21) elements of the BER. Ms O’Neill said the facilities would not only benefit the school, but would support stronger social networks and community cohesion. “It is tremendous to be here today to celebrate the opening of the new classrooms and covered outdoor learning area and to witness first hand, the impact this has had on Woodport Public School and the local community,” Ms O’Neill said. Kulnura Public School received $954,000 under the BER program for new classrooms and refurbishment work. The new classrooms were officially opened on Friday, September 2. Ms O’Neill congratulated all those involved in the project. “My heartiest congratulations today go to the principal, school staff, parents and tradespeople who have worked together to deliver this important project,” Ms O’Neill said. “The new facilities may never have been built if it were not for the BER program,” Ms O’Neill said. “Schools like Kulnura may never have been modernised if it was left up to state governments, which is why the BER is such a fantastic program,” Ms O’Neill said. Ms Freeman received a Premier’s Ausgrid Environmental Education Scholarship and Mr Ardley received the Premier’s Commonwealth Bank Foundation Australian History Scholarship. “This program is about helping to make our best teachers world experts in education,” Premier O’Farrell said. “Through the Premier’s Teacher Scholarships program, educators have a truly unique opportunity to undertake international study tours and visit some of the world’s best schools and centres of education. “They return to their classrooms professionally inspired and re-invigorated, ready to share new knowledge, teaching methods and skills. “That’s what we’re fuelling through this program – and at the end of the day, it’s our students who will benefit.” Premier O’Farrell
confirmed his support for the Premier’s Teacher Scholarships program and identified education as one of the Government’s largest commitments. He also paid special tribute to the many corporate partners involved including the thirteen new organisations that have joined the 2011 program. The minister for Education the Hon Adrian Piccoli MP was also at the reception and met many of this year’s recipients. The minister said he was particularly impressed with the increasing level of interest of teachers in the professional learning opportunities made possible through the scholarships: “The 2011 program saw 264 applications from across NSW this year which represents a 20 per cent increase on the 2010 program. “No doubt many of us can still remember those very special teachers we had at school,” said minister Piccoli. “They inspired us with their enthusiasm and passion for their craft and their subjects,” he said. The decision was made after calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for Gosford Town Centre. Council will also investigate medium term options with the Central Coast Regional Development Council such as the establishment of a University Campus in Gosford, potentially at the Town Centre. Commercial HQ’s Expression of Interest proposed to convert the
ground level into a Paddy’s Market style venue with food outlets and a cafe area. Council stated in its report that the EOI can “be achieved in a relatively short time frame”. Submissions were also received from Corporate Retreat Pty Ltd, RT Retail Projects, Hope Church and Gosford City Chamber of Commerce. The building was recently purchased by Council primarily for Gosford’s
commuter car parking purposes. While the car parking operation is currently underway, the residual building areas remain unoccupied. The EOI process was undertaken in an effort to gauge the level of interest as well as possible ideas for the site. Gosford Council Agenda SF.27, 6 Sep 2011

Success in netball gala day oint Clare Public School participated in the Junior Netball Gala Day held on Friday, August 26, at Lemon Grove netball courts, Ettalong.
P
The School had four teams competing, organised by captains Tyla White, Holly Irwin/Marley Irving, Kate Lewis and Kerrie Greene. All four teams experienced success during the day with one team coming through undefeated. “The best thing about the day was the
enthusiasm of the children and the sportsmanship with which they played,” said coordinator Ms Kate Lawson. “All were keen to try out different positions and learn as much as they could about their game. “We had some experienced players
amongst the teams, but many more were new to the sport so the highlight of the day was so many of the children, with big smiles on their faces saying ‘Mrs Lawson, I love netball;,” she said. Newsletter, 6 Sep 2011 Karen Morrow, Point Clare Public School
Point Clare defeated but undeterred oint Clare Public School participated in the Woy Woy Rugby League Cup at Rogers Park on Wednesday, August 31.
P
Coordinator Mr Trevor Watt said he couldn’t decide on a best and fairest player so he left it up to the boys. “The boys voted Zac Booth as most valuable player on the day because I couldn’t split half a dozen players to decide on one
best and fairest player. “Well done Zac and congratulations to all of the players for their effort and support for one another and for displaying good sportsmanship during the day. “Point Clare didn’t win
any of our games but we came very close to causing several upsets against the larger schools,” he said. Newsletter, 6 Sep 2011 Karen Morrow, Point Clare Public School
team of under-14 basketball players from the Gosford area will be leaving for the US on Wednesday, September 28, for two weeks and will tour under the banner of the East Coast Aussies, playing tournaments in both Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
A
The tour is organised by former basketball player John Zappia from Lisarow, who has been organising tours such as this for the past 11 years. All players will spend half a day at a school to experience the differences between the Australian and US school systems. Games will be played against people from varied socioeconomic backgrounds to show players how different people live. The team will also be given a police escort by the Los Angeles Police Department to the Police Academy where they will be given a tour, an opportunity not given to any other teams. The players will also be given certificates to commemorate their visit from nine different politicians, including the mayor of Los Angeles and the mayor of Las Vegas. Zappia was born in Australia but went to school in the US and was selected in the East Coast USA team, he came to live in Australia after graduating and was then selected for the Australian team.
After many years of playing and multiple knee reconstructions Zappia decided that his time as a player was limited and began coaching. It was coaching that led him to begin the tours, as players often asked him why he moved from the US to Australia.
Zappia’s aim in creating the tours was to prove to children that while the US is great, Australia is better. The families of the players will be travelling with the team. Email, 30 Aug 2011 John Zappia, Lisarow

The Executive Committee consulted with member clubs and determined that by making matches on turf pitches more accessible to more players the standard of play will improve and playing on the Central Coast will be more attractive. The aim of the new strategy is to provide encouragement and opportunities for all players by improving the standard of cricket and to enhance the pathway for elite and potentially-elite player to higher levels of cricket. The previous “Grade/ Club” structure of the competition will be changed to a more team-oriented approach. In seasons 2011/12 and 2012/13, this will entail 10 teams per division as opposed to the previous 13.
In 2013/14, the divisions will be reduced to 8 teams per division. The divisional structure will see Premier League, Division 1 and Division 2 playing on turf pitches. The 13 existing clubs will continue to operate with the new structure, giving them the opportunity to be more flexible in nominating the divisions in which their lower-grade teams are suited to play. There will be process of promotion and relegation from each division, thus giving teams in the lower grades the chance to build their teams up to perform at the higher level. There are a number of conditions in the promotion/

relegation system which have been agreed to by all clubs and take effect in 2011/12. The new structure will create a more level playing field in all divisions thus making playing cricket an attractive proposition for all. Lower divisions will be made up in consultation with individual clubs with the minimum requirement for participation being the provision of at least 4 teams in total in the Two Day competition. The successful One Day Limited Over competition will continue which gives players another option to enjoy playing cricket. The CCCA has expanded the Centre of Excellence

ttalong team mates Harley McDonald and John Roberts paved the way for their skip Aron Sherriff to win the Bowls Central Coast Triples Championship and become the first ever bowler to win all four Central Coast major championship titles of Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours in the one year.
E
Lowe to represent Australia raig Lowe has recently been selected to represent Australia in the Australian Men’s Volleyball Team at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China.
The selection followed the announcement by the Central Coast Regional Council Organisation of Councils that Lowe would be the recipient of the Sporting and Cultural Sponsorship grant. “I am excited to have
been selected to represent Australia,” said Lowe. “I have been told The World University Games is the 2nd largest sporting event in the world.” Lowe is currently living in Canada, where he is about to commence his second season with Brandon University Bobcats. “I now play in the highest volleyball league in Canada and play at semiprofessional volleyball level (unpaid). “I play in the Canada West CIS Volleyball League.” Lowe said.
It’s fitting that Sherriff should etch his name into the Central Coast record books in such a way, after outstanding personal achievements over the past eighteen months in winning the Australian Singles title, representing Australia at Commonwealth Games in Delhi and then winning the World Champion of Champion Singles crown. So the Zone Triples Championship became that something extra special with forty four teams taking to the greens at Bateau Bay in winter sunshine eager to test the champion’s consistency and powers of concentration over six games of play
(l/r) Aron Sherriff skip), John Roberts, Harley McDonald Ettalong Memorial spread over two weekends. Played in four sections, the competition was keen and of a particularly high standard. The highly fancied Ettalong combination of Harley McDonald, John Roberts and Aron Sherriff won Section 1 but were
fully tested in the third round to scrape home by just one shot (19-18) over The Greens team of Peter Redman, Phil Flippence and Tony Scott. They beat the Avoca Beach team of Dick Love, Richard Nowland and Peter Coombes (24-11) to win the

section and a berth into the semi-final. The Wyong trio of Stephen Elliott, Ray Bourne and Craig Bell displayed good form to win Section 2 with a telling victory (23-14) over another strong Ettalong combination in Mark Endacott, Graham Maier and Tony Laguzza to set up a showdown against Sherriff in a semi-final. But once again, the Ettalong boys proved too strong over the Wyong trio with a 22-14 win for a spot in the final Ettalong were again to the forefront in Section 3 with John Wiblen, Danny McNeilly and Lee Trethowan recording strong wins especially in the Section final over Lou Robertson, Ron Sanday and Dean Wilson from Bateau Bay (36-10). The Everglades combination of Alan Joss, James Roberts and Darren Morrison were in good touch in Section 4 with solid wins in the early rounds and
a convincing win in the Section final over Gosford City’s Wayne Balfe, Allan Lewin and Guy Robins (2516) to progress into the semi-final against Ettalong’s Lee Trethowan. The Everglades combination had Trethowan’s measure to lead 21-13 after 18 ends, but in a never say die performance, the Ettalong boys fought back to tie the game 23 all after 25 ends but then dropped a heart breaking three on the extra end for Morrison’s Everglades team to sneak into the final. The final between the “young gun” skips of
Sherriff and Morrison was reminiscent of their many tussles in the junior ranks having both shared centre stage at the RNSWBA Presentation Night in 2005, with Sherriff being named the Bowler of the Year and Morrison being named the Junior of the Year. Morrison’s team of Allan Joss and James Roberts started strongly and led 9-2 after six ends and it looked as if an upset was on the cards but champion players have that ability to fight back and Sherriff’s team of Harley McDonald and John Roberts won the next six ends to lead 11-9 after 13 ends. The gauntlet had been thrown down by Sherriff’s team who were unrelenting with a telling four on the 17 end to establish a 17-11 mini-break. The outcome was ominous and the Sherriff combination proved too strong over the closing ends to record a convincing 24-13 victory. Aron Sherriff had achieved the elusive “Grand Slam”, and he was the first to thank his various team mates in Tony Laguzza, Lee Trethowan, Harley McDonald and John Roberts who had all been part of his success. Aron also made special mention of the Ettalong Club management and the Ettalong members who made his move to the Club so easy and enjoyable which has contributed to his good form and today’s special achievement.
Finals fever his weekend will see the start of the finals play offs for Rugby Union, which will be held at Woy Woy Oval, and the Central Coast Premier League, to be held at Pluim Park, Lisarow.

Graham defeats world champion dominate NSW Youth League
ixteen year old Gosford resident Matt Graham scored an upset win over current Olympic gold medallist and world champion, Alexandre Bilodeau, in the James Boag’s ABOM dual moguls competition at Victoria’s Mount Buller on August 29.
S
Due to the credentials of Bilodeau, the day belonged to Graham. Bilodeau, 23, won the dual moguls at the world championships in 2011 and 2009 and the moguls Olympic gold medal last year in Vancouver. Graham’s 13 to 12 points win completes a hat-trick in the annual Mt Buller classic, an event that the Australian has “owned” since his first victory in the competition as a 14 year old. Despite the importance of the win, the AIS / NSWIS athlete was withdrawn “The win kind of makes me feel pretty good,” Graham said. Moguls Championships at NSW’s Perisher resort last weekend. AIS mogul skiing program head coach Steve Desovich was also relatively low key, describing the win as a “positive result and
Matt Graham well earned” but stressed that both he and Graham need to keep the victory in perspective for the future. “We know that Matt is going to have his work cut out in World Cup this year as there are probably 20
or 25 guys with his ability,” Desovich said. “Today was a good result but we must now keep our focus on making solid progress at the World Cup level over the next years in the lead up to Sochi 2014.”
Their season record boasts a 20 wins and 2 losses dominance over the rest of the League, losing only two games and having played with under strength complements. The group have been coached very successfully over the past 3 years by Chris Ohlback, and 2011 has proved no different in the lead up to the Finals. Captain Sam Marler said, “The most important thing leading into this weekend is making sure we don’t fall into the trap of getting caught up in the emotions of the game.”
“We play Newcastle in Newcastle, and I can only imagine the type of support that their boys will rally up for the semi-final.” Last season, the Crusaders Youth League men lost the semi-final to Manly Sea-Eagles, and the men this year have definitely not forgotten the heartbreak of last years’ efforts. “Our last few training sessions have been full of defence, and the focal point of the season revolving around last years’ performance in the big game.” “I think as a team we are ready, and I believe with our inside and outside capabilities, we are a very good chance at the State Title for the 2nd time in 3 years,” Marler said. If the Youth League Men are successful at 11am on Saturday morning against Newcastle, they will stay on for the Grand final at 9am on Sunday morning.

luetongue Central Coast Stadium will launch new public place recycling systems at the Central Coast Mariners first home game against Gold Coast United on Saturday, October 15.

The launch is expected to encourage patrons at the match, and at all future matches, to ‘Do The right Thing, Use The Right Bin’. Funded by the Packaging Stewardship Forum (PSF) of the Australian Food and Grocery Council in partnership with Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium and Coca-Cola Amatil, 132 waste and recycling bins have been installed around the Stadium carrying the well known call to action to recycle message ‘Do The Right Thing, Use The Right Bin’.
This initiative will provide away from home recycling opportunities for 250,000 people at over 27 events each year and recycle up to 27 tonnes of aluminium cans, PET and glass bottles from landfill annually – equivalent to 3750 household wheelie bins. Bluetongue Stadium managing director Ms Monique Marks said: “We are proud to be a part of the PSF’s away from home program and to encourage recycling at the stadium.” “Taking part and leading the way in recycling for other
businesses will assist with decreasing waste through our recycling efforts”. PSF general manager Ms Jenny Pickles congratulated Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium on its enthusiasm and commitment to help patrons boost their “away from home” recycling efforts. “Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium was eager to encourage recycling at its venue and we came on board with some expertise on how to do it,” Ms Pickles said. “Through well-placed bin
infrastructure and promotion of the ‘Do the Right Thing, Use the Right Bin’ message, the new systems will make it just as easy to recycle away from home as it is at home.” Corporate Affairs CocaCola Amatil (CCA) director Alec Wagstaff said: “CCA is proud to partner with Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium on this away from home recycling initiative to help consumers ‘Do The Right Thing’ while out and about and divert recyclable material away from landfill and into the recycling stream.” “It is through the combined efforts of projects like these that the public, governments and business can all make a difference. “This program is a great example of industry collaboration to generate a better outcome for the environment where every beverage container recycled is diverted from landfill.” Australia’s major beverage companies have supported the installation of new away from home recycling systems in 52 of Australia’s major sporting stadium and entertainment venues which service nearly 40 million patron visits annually. Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium is one of six well known NSW entertainment and sporting venues participating in the PSF’s away from home recycling program, with recycling bins already installed at Sydney Opera House, Sydney Theatre Company, Centennial Parklands, Newcastle Entertainment Centre and Acer Arena. Central Coast teams support prostate cancer research n support of Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA), the U13s and U15s Razorback teams wore blue shoe laces at their Rugby finals matches on Saturday, September 10, at Blue Tongue Stadium, Gosford, to raise awareness about prostate cancer.

The Central Coast teams are part of a family orientated club and said they recognise the importance of this widespread men’s health issue. The Old Boars, known as the “golden oldies” will also show their support to by wearing the blue laces on Sunday, September 18, and hosting a barbeque fundraiser in support of PCFA at Ourimbah Rugby Park. “It’s a good reminder to our dads and people in our families that they need to look after themselves” said U15s player Jack Margin and his captain William Finlay. “These outstanding young men have shown such leadership in helping in a visible and real way that they can be vital players in the fight against prostate cancer – we thank them for their support,” said Prostate Cancer Foundation NSW state manager of Australia Ms Wendy Farrow. September is International Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and PCFA with major sponsor Commonwealth Bank, is encouraging Australians to host a Big Aussie Barbie in September in support of the campaign. PCFA chief executive Dr Anthony Lowe said barbecues are an ideal way
to encourage Australians to support PCFA. “September is the start of spring, footy grand finals and Father’s Day so it really is the perfect opportunity for Australians to get behind PCFA’s cause by hosting a Big Aussie Barbie and contributing as much as they can,” said Dr Lowe. “Prostate cancer is still the most common cancer in Australian men. More than ever we are seeing the far reaching effect of prostate cancer in our community. “It is through the continued generosity from the general community and corporate Australia we are able to continue our work around the country,” said Dr Lowe. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australia. Tragically, this year almost 20,000 Australian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 3300 men will die of the disease. In addition to hosting your own Big Aussie Barbie, Australians can also support PCFA’s Big Aussie Barbie campaign by purchasing a “BBQ Kit” via www.prostate. org.au.
