Centre of Excellence receives $10 million grant he Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence will soon be home to some of Australia’s best indigenous footballers.

On Monday, August 12, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Senator Bob Carr announced $10 million of federal government funding towards the club’s training base and community hub.

Senator Carr was joined by government officials, Mariners representatives, Football Federation Australia administrators, Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) delegates and media at the funding announcement in Tuggerah.

After watching Mariners head coach Graham Arnold lead the club’s first team through a preseason session, Senator Carr announced that the grant would help deliver a Hyundai A-League first program enabling talented indigenous players to not only improve their football skills, but also advance their life prospects.

“This project is about more than just football,” Senator Carr said.

“It’s about providing a sporting, health and education hub that delivers a wide range of benefits for the local community and economy.”

Central Coast Mariners Group general manager Mr Peter Turnbull said that the concept to establish the club’s Elite Indigenous

Football Academy had been first discussed with Darkinjung LALC chief executive officer Mr Sean Gordon throughout the Mariners’ 2013 championship winning campaign.

“Today’s funding guarantee is the result of 12 months of hard work,” Mr Turnbull said.

“We have been to Canberra on several occasions regarding this application, and we are delighted the funding has been finalised.

“We feel the Mariners already make a tremendous difference to the lives of many people on the Central Coast, but with our

Elite Indigenous Football Academy we hope to bring forward the days when the Socceroos can boast a strong number of Australia’s first people.

“Moreover, this funding will enable us to start work on stage two of the project within weeks.

“Without this commitment, it would have taken several years for us to have been able to deliver the extra facilities.”

Mr Turnbull said the funding would also help create jobs on the Central Coast over the medium to long term, with a range of individuals and companies from a variety of sectors engaged to help deliver the

project.

“This additional investment via the Mariners into the local economy will provide another boost to the local community,” he said.

Central Coast Mariners majority owner Mr Michael Charlesworth, who is currently abroad on business, forwarded his thanks to the government and member for Dobell Mr Craig Thomson for assisting in securing the funding.

“Our Elite Indigenous Football Academy will be the first of its kind in Australia and will provide talented but disadvantaged indigenous kids the best possible opportunity to realise their dreams of becoming professional footballers,” Mr

Charlesworth said.

“I would like to thank Craig, who has worked tirelessly in making this opportunity come about.

“Craig has always been a keen supporter of our vision to ensure the Central Coast is Australia’s football leader.”

Head of Hyundai A-League Mr Damien de Bohun also attended the announcement.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the future of Central Coast football and the Mariners,” Mr de Bohun said.

“Thousands of kids will benefit from this development and to have the inclusion of an Elite Indigenous Football Academy is another great step for the continued growth of football on the

Central Coast.”

Mr Thompson said he was proud to have been involved in negotiating the $10 million funding for the Centre of Excellence at Tuggerah.

“This is a huge vote of confidence in the future of the Mariners here on the Central Coast,” Mr Thomson said.

Stage two of the Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence will include a 1,500 seat grandstand, lighting for the training fields and additional car parking.

The Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence already features a tournament quality playing field used for first team training and National Youth League matches; coaching and players’ quarters complete with a gym and office space; 10 all-weather synthetic pitches used by the local community and parking for over 100 vehicles.

Building for a public hydrotherapy and aquatic centre will be completed next year.

The funds for the project are from the latest round of the Regional Development Australia Fund.

Funding for this project is already included in the budget.

Detectives are continuing their investigations into the matter

and are attempting to establish a motive for the incident.

They have been told a small light-coloured vehicle was seen driving along Flounder Rd at excessive speed without its headlights on, moments after the shooting.

Police are now appealing for anyone who may have seen the

vehicle or has information about the shooting to come forward.

“We established a project committee to begin the process of designing a masterplan following the grandstand closure, incorporating community groups who will be regularly using the new site.

“The contribution they have each made to this project has been of the highest calibre and I would like to thank them for their participation and involvement in what shapes to be a significant development for the Woy Woy community,” said mayor Cr McKinna.

Gosford Council general manager Mr Paul Anderson said that the masterplan aimed to provide the necessary infrastructure to allow Woy Woy to host regional sporting events.

“The facility will have an attendance capacity of 10,000 featuring a 600 seat grandstand, change rooms, kiosk, media box and club house.

“The masterplan also focuses on the integration of Woy Woy Oval with the CBD to create a vibrant and accessible community hub.

“We are also exploring options to transform the Oval Ave car park into a boulevard space to accommodate community gatherings, such as local markets and special events,” said Mr Anderson.

Mayor Cr McKinna said that the project in its entirety would cost $8 to $9 million.

Mr McKinna will contest the seat of Robertson while Mr Bracken will be running for the seat of Dobell.

Both Lawrie and Nathan said they believed the Central Coast has been overlooked by Labor and the Coalition for far too long.

They said they would seek to draw attention and action to the neglected needs of the people of the Central Coast.

Mr McKinna is currently the mayor of Gosford and has been closely aligned with the Central Coast for the past nine years as coach and ambassador of A-League Premiers Central Coast Mariners.

Former International test cricketer Bracken has been a resident of the Coast for nine years and currently lives at Hamlyn Terrace with his wife and five-year-old son.

Lawrie and Nathan said they believe that neither major party has shown any significant support to

the region in the past, and Team Central Coast would be giving Labor and the Coalition an opportunity to make a solid commitment to the people of the Central Coast.

John Singleton. “l am funding this campaign because l believe the residents of the Central Coast have been overlooked and forgotten by both major parties during my whole long lifetime,” said Mr Singleton.

“Of course in a Federal Election, we expect representatives of the major parties to be focused primarily on federal-national issues.

“But it is surely not unreasonable for the people of the Central

Coast to also expect from candidates who seek to represent us in Canberra, recognition of the major challenges and opportunities our region faces and a genuine commitment to doing something about them?

Jayden Hodgson in Australian basketball team Stacey Hodgson

entral Coast Adventist School Year 10 student Jayden Hodgson is currently in America competing in the Adidas National Camp and Tournament in South Beach California as part of the Australian basketball team.

“This is a huge camp with many countries attending and the top 40 American students,” said Jayden’s mum Stacey.

In January this year Jayden was a member of the NSW Waratahs U18 Country Basketball team that won the Australian Country Basketball Cup at Albury.

From this tournament he was selected as captain of the NSW Country team to

compete at the Australian U18 championships in Queensland in April.

“Jayden is classed as bottom age and is still eligible to play in the same age group next year,” said Ms Hodgson.

“He is the only student from his school ever to make NSW Combined Open basketball team which won the All School State Championships.

“Jayden has another two years at making this team again as it is an open team with students up to and including Year 12.”

As a result of Jayden’s performance in last year’s U16 Nationals he was selected in a 20 man Australian squad to train for the World U17 Basketball Championships in 2014.

The squad has had three camps at the Australian

Institute of Sport (AIS) where players have been dropped and others added.

“He has just received notice that he is invited back to the AIS in August as part of the final 16 man squad,” said Ms Hodgson.

A team of 10 will be picked from this camp to play in the Oceania Series against New Zealand in Melbourne where the winning country will represent Oceania in the 2014 U17 World Basketball Championships in Dubai in June next year.

Jayden has also been part of an Australian squad that attended the Asia Nike Basketball camp in China.

“Jayden is working so very hard to hold his position in these squads and teams as your performance is regularly tested,” said Ms Hodgson.

The partnership agreement aims to provide Gosford City exposure at a national and international level and focuses on a range of community benefits including youth, recreational and sporting development opportunities, increased tourism and visitor attraction to the region.

Council sponsored the Central Coast Mariners between 2008 and 2011 in conjunction with Wyong Council, Business Central

Coast and the Department of State and Regional Development for a total of approximately $440,000.

Council concluded its sponsorship of the club following the 2010-2011 season.

While the joint sponsorship of the Mariners was successful, Council had resolved to investigate opportunities to sponsor other regional activities, projects and joint ventures in the marketing of Gosford City.

The Central Coast Mariners have built a reputation as the most consistent team in the national competition’s history, as four time grand finalists, two time premiers and 2013 Hyundai A-League Champions.

“The Mars Food Australia Gosford New Year’s Eve Festival is an exciting action packed annual event, held on December 31 each year on the Gosford Waterfront,” said Gosford Business Improvement District (GBID) manager Mr Paul Brasch.

New Year’s Eve Festival is finalist in tourism award

Council with the opportunity to become a sleeve sponsor for the next three seasons commencing this year.

The partnership will provide Gosford Council with exposure at a national level through the Hyundai A-League competition and at an international level through the Asian Champions League (ACL).

Four ACL games were held in Gosford against competing teams from March to May and drew crowds of up to 8,000 people, accompanied by large visiting delegations from overseas supporting their respective teams.

The playground is located at Sohier Park, Ourimbah, on the corner of Ken Cook Way and Shirley St. “The playground has been four and a half years in the planning after Council made a resolution to construct it in November, 2008,” mayor Cr Eaton said.

“Our staff have done

a fantastic job with the design and construction of the playground and I know that it has already proved extremely popular with local residents who have long called for a facility like this in the Ourimbah area.

“Throughout the consultation phase, which involved 500 letters sent to residents, all responses received by Council were extremely favourable, including the direct consultation with the Ourimbah Precinct Committee and Ourimbah Neighbourhood Playgroup.

“I encourage everyone to get along and experience the playground first hand because it really is a state of the art facility with some wonderful equipment for the kids to enjoy.”

The playground caters for children aged between two and 12 years and features a 25 metre long double flying fox, a 7.4 metre high net climbing structure, explorative dinosaur skeleton, regular play equipment such as swings, slide and spring toys, large shelter, bike racks and seating for the adults.

Key Site planning proposal on public exhibition Development detailed guidance for the all submissions before planning proposal for a long awaited $45 million development at Specific Control Plan (DCP) and development of this key the proposal is brought The Entrance is now on public exhibition.

For almost 30 years, the prime site known as the “Key Site” on the corner of Marine Pde and The Entrance Rd has been left vacant.

Now it is set to be turned into a 20 storey building comprising 93 apartments and retail floor space, which will include restaurants.

Wyong Council has identified the site as an Iconic Development Site and has been working with proponents Pelican Horizons Pty Ltd to finally deliver a development at this location.

Wyong mayor Cr Doug Eaton said this was an historic event for Wyong Shire.

“It’s the first of council’s 28 identified Iconic Development sites to reach this stage, and it happens to be a development on arguably the most iconic site in the Shire,” Cr Eaton said.

“The public can now view the first of what we anticipate to become

three major developments at The Entrance, with a combined value of more than $500 million.

“We have put in a lot of hard work and we are now at the stage where this development is as close as ever to becoming a reality.”

In June last year, council initiated a planning proposal to switch off certain planning controls and create new building heights.

This was endorsed by the state government’s Gateway Panel in August 2012.

A planning proposal is the relatively new term for a spot rezoning and while it is not a formal Development Application, if approved, it will ultimately allow for a Development Application to be determined.

Wyong Council has been in constant contact with the proponents, working through the

state government’s requirements and negotiating a Site

a Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA), which is on exhibition alongside the planning proposal.

The draft VPA includes information that shows the developers providing a cash contribution to council to the value of $1.56 million.

This will be directed towards public domain upgrades within The Entrance Town Centre, including work in Memorial Park.

“All up, it is envisaged that around 250 construction jobs and 120 jobs upon completion will be created through this development,” Cr Eaton said.

“This will be a tremendous boost to the local economy at The Entrance and Wyong Shire as a whole.

“For years, we have seen applications for this prime location come and go before council, but this latest one has involved a lot of hard work from council staff and the developers are serious about getting on with the job.”

Council will review

back to a council meeting in September for consideration.

If officially endorsed, the planning proposal will then be forwarded to the state government for final approval.

“It is possible for the proponents to submit a Development Application for the site now,” Cr Eaton said.

“Because of the value of the development, council could endorse the DA but official approval would need to be sought from the Joint Regional Planning Panel.”

The Key Site Planning Proposal will be on exhibition until the end of August and can be viewed at council’s Wyong Civic Centre and The Entrance library.

Wyong Council encourages residents and visitors to view the documents on exhibition and submit their comments.

$3 million loan to reduce pollution in Tuggerah Lakes

Local Government Minister Mr Don Page made the announcement on Tuesday, August 6, that Wyong Council would receive the funding from the NSW government in round two of the Local Infrastructure Renewal Scheme (LIRS).

The $100 million LIRS provides subsidies to assist councils to help meet the cost of financing their infrastructure backlogs.

Member for The Entrance Mr Chris Spence said he was delighted that Wyong Shire was among the successful applicants in round two of the funding and that the Tuggerah Lakes Wrack Harvesting Project could now go ahead.

“Tuggerah Lakes has had much focus over the past few years with many restoration projects being undertaken as part of the Estuary Management

Unit,” Mr Spence said.

“The result will be more attractive waterways without the pungent smell that deters many locals and tourists from enjoying our iconic waterways.”

Member for Wyong Mr Darren Webber also welcomed the announcement.

“Wyong Shire Council is looking to significantly increase its wrack harvesting operations through the introduction of a self-propelled barge capable of transporting wrack from the already operating wrack harvester,” Mr Webber said.

Mr Webber said this would minimise transport times from collection to storage.

“Council will also purchase a vehicle capable of pushing the wrack that has gathered near the shoreline out to the weed harvester where

it may be safely harvested in line with license conditions,” Mr Webber said.

“The project will also involve renewal of several Gross Pollutant Traps.

“This will assist in reducing large pollutants from entering the lake.

“The total cost of the project is $3 million, all of which Wyong Shire Council will borrow under round two of the Local Government Infrastructure Renewal Scheme.”

Save Tuggerah Lakes councillors Mr Adam Troy and Mr Lloyd Taylor also welcomed the funding.

“It is great to see that the state government is listening to the concerns of the community and has recognised the importance of the Tuggerah Lakes to the Central Coast community,” Cr Troy said.

he Central Coast now has an extra year’s worth of water stored thanks to the Mardi-Mangrove Link pipeline.

Since the pipeline started transferring water, more than 27,300 million litres have been stored in Mangrove Creek Dam. Wyong Council director of infrastructure and operations Mr Greg McDonald said this was another achievement for the Mardi-Mangrove Link and the Central Coast community.

“Building the MardiMangrove Link was identified by the Central Coast community as a priority for drought proofing our region,” Mr McDonald said.

“Now that is complete, we are taking advantage of the wet weather when it happens and reaping the rewards.

“The additional total water pumped to Mangrove Creek Dam has now passed what the Central Coast community would use in one year on the current Water Wise Rules.”

Gosford Council director of water and sewer Mr Rod Williams said it was pleasing to see the Link producing results so quickly.

“It seems like only yesterday we were staring down the barrel of emergency drought works and dam levels at around 13%,” Mr Williams said.

“Now, in a few short years we have completed the Mardi-Mangrove Link and with the help of good rains have been able to increase storage levels beyond 60%.

Buttonderry wins major landfill prize y o n g C o u n c i l ’s

Buttonderry Waste Management Facility has taken out the major prize at the coveted Waste Management Association of Australia’s Landfill and Transfer Station Innovation and Excellence Awards.

The announcement was made on Thursday, August 8, at an awards ceremony attended by approximately 500 industry professionals.

Council’s manager of waste Mr Stefan Botha collected the award.

“I am excited with this result and would like to dedicate this win to the commitment of our staff and resolve of our decision makers to implement best practice at the site,” Mr Botha said.

Wyong Council’s general manager Mr Michael Whittaker said this was a great honour for council.

“I am immensely proud of the environmental management of the site, particularly in relation to the resource recovery, landfill operations, stringent environmental controls, and tight security to control access to the site,” Mr Whittaker said.

“I have always said that the Buttonderry Waste Management Facility is the best run landfill site in Australia and that has been proven to be true.

“Our staff have worked hard to establish a best practice facility utilising a combination of state of the art practices, effective management systems and new technologies and I thank them for their dedication.”

One such state of the art practice is the landfill gas extraction program.

Methane is captured via a series of pipes in landfill cells and sent to two power generators.

This ensures that carbon emissions are minimised as the gas does not leak into the atmosphere and it is also used to generate renewable energy.

“This is a win for the environment but is also a win for our residents as the generators create enough energy to power around 4,000 households in the Shire,” Mr Whittaker said.

The facility, located on Hue Hue Rd at Jilliby, is the only operational landfill site in the Shire.

The site has operating landfill cells, closed cells, a composting facility, a transfer station and all associated infrastructure including a main office.

“Schools need certainty and so the Coalition will match the dollarfor-dollar commitments already made by the government to schools over the next four years,” Ms McNamara said.

“While the RuddGillard government has made a mess of school funding arrangements with seven different Gonski deals in place, we know that schools and parents need certainty.”

The announcement by Mr Tony Abbott means that if elected, a Coalition government would ensure Commonwealth schools

funding committed by Labour for the 2014 school year would flow to all states and territories irrespective of whether they have signed a deal with the Gillard or Rudd government.

The Coalition would also amend the Australian Education Act to ensure the states, territories and non-government sector keep authority for their schools.

It would further match the Commonwealth funding for schools committed by Labor over the forward estimates.

“Most importantly,

local schools will have the funding certainty but without a national takeover of schools,” Ms McNamara said.

“We will work cooperatively with the states and territories to deliver a better education system.

“I want schools to deliver better quality education through better teaching, better teachers, more community engagement, and more principal autonomy as well as through fair funding.”

Thomson challenges McNamara to debates ember for Dobell Mr Craig Thomson has challenged the Liberal candidate for Dobell to a series of debates in the electorate in the lead up to the federal election on September 7.

In a letter to Ms Karen McNamara, Mr Thomson said it was important that constituents get to hear their candidates’ views about local issues.

Mr Thomson also said it was important that voters get to better know their candidates and what they stand for.

ederal Opposition leader Mr Tony Abbott has visited the Wyong Shire as part of his campaign for the upcoming federal election on Saturday, September 7.

F Emma McBride has been endorsed as the Labor candidate for Dobell

he Australian Labor Party (ALP) has preselected former Wyong Shire councillor Ms Emma McBride as its candidate for the federal seat of Dobell in the upcoming federal election.

Ms McBride, who now lives in The Entrance, is the daughter of former state minister Mr Grant McBride.

She grew up in Wyong, attended high school in Tuggerah and is currently the chief pharmacist at Wyong Hospital.

She has held this role for the past five years.

Ms McBride is actively involved in the local community and is the patron of the Wyong Netball Association.

As part of the ALP,

Ms McBride has said she would fight for more funding for Wyong Hospital and health care services, as well as better roads on the Central Coast.

This would include the F3 to M2 link.

She has also said she will seek to protect, support and create local jobs, and wants to make the Wyong Shire an even better place to live.

When asked how he came up with these figures, Cr Eaton said that the award that applies to local government in NSW limits the amount of any increase in the work contribution that can be passed on to the worker. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So the maximum amount under the award is 10%,â&#x20AC;? Bracken to stand as independent for Dobell ormer international test cricketer Mr Nathan Bracken has announced that he will run as the independent candidate for Dobell in the September 7 federal election.

Mr Bracken, who has been a resident of the Central Coast for nine years, currently lives at Hamlyn Terrace with his wife and five-year-old son.

He said he believed the Central Coast has been overlooked by Labor and the Coalition for far too long and is seeking to draw attention and action to the neglected needs of the people of the Central Coast.

Mr Bracken, who made the announcement on Monday, August 12, will be joined on the Central Coast by Gosford mayor Cr Lawrie McKinna, who will run as the independent candidate for Robertson.

The costs of the “Team Central Coast” election campaign will be funded by high profile businessman Mr John Singleton.

Mr Singleton, who has been a rate payer on the Central Coast for over 60 years, said he was funding the campaign because he believed that the residents of the Central Coast have been forgotten by both major parties during his entire life time.

“Of course, in a federal election, we expected representatives of the major parties to be focused primarily on federal-national issues,” Mr Singleton said.

“That is as it should be.

“But it is surely not unreasonable for the people of the Central Coast to also expect from candidates who seek to represent us in Canberra, recognition of the major challenges and opportunities our region faces and a genuine commitment to doing something about them.

“The Central Coast opportunity is right now lost on both major parties.

“Our population lives in a depressing present and is faced with a limited future, only because of lack of leadership.

“I know something has to be done before the Central Coast becomes a lost and forgotten opportunity.

“I realise the odds are against our winning either of the seats we are contesting.

“But we will have succeeded if the major parties understand that

your votes, and our candidates’ preferences, will go to them only if they can demonstrate a real commitment to the future of the Central Coast.

“I stand to gain no more and no less from my actions than any other resident of the Central Coast which I believe has more, or as many, natural assets than anywhere in Australia.

“This is a greater risk for Lawrie and Nathan than for me.

“And thus a credit to them both.”

Mr Singleton said he knew Mr Bracken throughout his sporting career and through his father’s company, which was contracted to do works on Mr Singleton’s farm at full price. “[Mr Bracken’s] reputation in Australia and internationally with his peers is impeccable,” Mr Singleton said.

Mr Singleton also said that his researcher, Mr Ian Woolcott of Woolcott Research, has reinforced his disillusionment with the political situation on the Central Coast, with professional studies in

both seats showing over 90% of voters are tired of being continually forgotten.

“I am funding this campaign because I feel I should,” Mr Singleton said.

“I can afford it.

“I wish the Central Coast team well and believe all other residents of the Central Coast will feel as I do that in the words of my dear old mate Don Chipp, ‘someone has to keep the bastards honest’.

“The ‘bastards’ will never take the Central Coast for granted again.”

Mr Singleton’s Central Coast interests include his family holiday home at Killcare; Bells at Killcare Resort; Manfredi at Bells; Pretty Beach House; Bells Beach House; Strawberry Hill Stud; and the Bluetongue Brewery at Warnervale.

He has also been the lessee of Gosford’s Bluetongue Stadium, home to the Central Coast Mariners, for 10 years.

Mr Singleton said he would not be making any more statements or comments on the matter or any other subject until after the federal election is held.

The research conducted

by Woolcott Research has

shown that 38% of voters in the seat of Dobell would select Liberal candidate Ms Karen McNamara as their first preference for their federal member.

Labor candidate Ms Emma McBride came in a close second, with 33% of voters indicating she would be their first preference.

According to the study, 8% of voters would select Mr Bracken as their first preference, with current member for Dobell Mr Craig Thomson ranking as first preference for only 7% of voters.

Wynn welcomes election reens candidate for Dobell Ms Sue Wynn has welcomed the announcement of the federal election and has said the party is calling for greater efforts to attract more green collar jobs in the Central Coast region.

Ms Wynn said such jobs would include the manufacture of components for the renewable energy market.

“We will stand up and be counted on climate change, creating jobs while protecting our fragile environment,” she said.

The Greens candidate for Dobell also emphasised that she would not support the proposed Wallarah 2 coal mine or the use of coal seam gas if elected.

“We will use, if possible, the federal environmental powers to stop this mine,” Ms Wynn said.

“Our goal is 90% renewables by 2013, not

more dirty power.”

Another Greens’ initiative emphasised

by Ms Wynn is that of helping people on low incomes and creating more affordable housing.

She said this would include a $50 increase in the Newstart allowance and a $40 increase for the single parent supplement.

Also on the agenda is action concerning the proposed high speed rail network which would stop on the Central Coast.

“The Greens have actual plans with dedicated money to start making the high speed rail a reality, with $1.2 billion to do the environmental impact studies and select the best route from

Melbourne to Brisbane over the coming term of the federal government,” Ms Wynn said.

“We aren’t paying lip service to this goal as we know how beneficial this high speed rail would be for the cities and businesses along its route.

“The high speed rail also enhances our tourism and lowers our carbon emissions also bringing high remuneration jobs to Australia.

“This is 21st century thinking and planning for the long term that the Greens know will enhance everyone in Australia’s standard of living.”

seeking ways to support small business.

“They are the engine room of Australia’s economy and they deserve a fair go,” she said.

“They are the big job creators.

“There are almost two

million small businesses in Australia employing five million people.

“The Greens would cut the company tax rate for small businesses by $2; increase the instant asset write-off threshold from $6,500 to $10,000 as recommended by

the Henry Tax Review; and strengthen the competition policy to prevent big business using their market power to gain unfair advantages over small business.”

New programs to help young people find work

oung people in Wyong Shire will now have access to four new programs which will help them find work opportunities. industries and trainers to generate more employment and support.

A business centre will be established to provide work experience in callcentres, mail-out and data entry services. $236,363 has been allocated to build an IT hub to provide interactive support and information to improve job readiness and access to employment opportunities for young people.

The hub will use online tools such as social networking, texting and apps to help them transition to work.

A share of $500,000 was given to provide a framework for local advisory groups to reflect and review their placebased practices and improve their processes under the Better Futures, Local Solutions program.

A share of $863,636 was further allocated to work with young people and develop a new social media platform to help them connect with local and national employment opportunities and community services.

Employers and training organisations will also be supported in using the technology to identify and engage people.

Federal member for Shortland Ms Jill Hall has welcomed the news and said the four programs focused on getting young people into work and giving them valuable knowledge and experience.

“Wyong Shire has received $693,385 in direct funding for youth employment programs,” Ms Hall said.

“We also share in another $1.36 million to review current practices and develop new social media programs.

“The projects recognise that many young people need help to access job advice and opportunities.

“They also utilise social media tools which are so familiar to young people in today’s digital age.” $457,021 has been allocated to employ a job readiness coordinator to give young people hands-on support and training to improve their employability skills.

The role will also engage local businesses,

people in Wyong Shire,” Ms Hall said.

“It is particularly good that they use so many online and social media tools.

“Helping to get young people into work is a really important process.

“Finding new ways of achieving that goal will be very welcome.”

Senator McLucas also said these local projects help to address key local challenges, including connecting young people and the long term unemployed with local businesses to find suitable employment opportunities.

“The government has already committed $1.6 million to Wyong Shire through the Local Solutions Fund to help improve education, training and employment opportunities in the area,” Senator McLucas said.

“This has helped young parents and families to complete their education, improve their employability, develop their parenting skills and engage with their local community.”

Funding for this commitment is already included in the budget.

ssessors from the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW 2013 Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards visited Summerland and Gwandalan in the week starting Monday, August 5.

The week saw 20 assessors setting off to evaluate 68 towns across rural NSW in search of the state’s top tidy town.

This year, the 68 rural communities will compete in six population categories, with many in the running for best overall town for 2013.

Keep Australia Beautiful NSW CEO Mr David Imrie said assessing week was the beginning of a lengthy judging process that would culminate in Armidale, last year’s Overall Tidy Town Award winner, on November 1 to 3.

“The tidy towns assessing week is a fantastic opportunity to learn first-hand how towns across the state are finding innovative and

resourceful ways of being sustainable,” Mr Imrie said.

“The winners of our program will be celebrated at our Tidy Towns Awards weekend where communities can learn from other participants, attend workshops and build important networks from regional NSW.” All tidy towns assessors have undergone a comprehensive two day training course in preparation for their role of assessing a range of town projects that have been nominated for an award category.

All assessors are experienced environmental professionals from a variety of backgrounds, such as local and state

government; community groups; educational institutions; and the private sector.

Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities is the flagship program of Keep Australia Beautiful and this year marks its 33rd anniversary.

The program fosters and recognises group and individual endeavours that protect, preserve and enhance our local environments and communities across regional NSW. Tidy towns allows rural towns to showcase their efforts in creating a more sustainable community across a range of projects.

$61,600 distributed between community organisations

ommunity organisations in the Wyong Shire will share in $61,600 through the Australian government’s 2013 Volunteer Grants program.

Member for Dobell Mr Craig Thomson said 17 organisations in the area have been successful under the program.

They include the Australian Breastfeeding Association at Berkeley Vale, the Chittaway Rural Fire Brigade, the Ourimbah District Girl Guides, the Habitat Association for Arts and Environment at Warnervale and the Friends of Pioneer Dairy Wetlands.

The grants, which range between $1,000

and $5,000, will help volunteer groups meet the rising costs of running not-for-profit organisations.

“This is great news for our hard-working volunteer groups on the Central Coast,” Mr Thomson said.

“These wonderful members of our community give their time for free but they still have to meet rising costs of delivering their services.

“These grants will help the organisations in a

range of ways including buying much needed equipment or contributing towards training courses, background checks and transport costs for volunteers with a disability who are unable to drive.

“I applaud the government for the grants because they are a great way to say thanks for the selfless work and commitment by volunteers.”

Principal to retire after 32 years

o r o k a n Public School principal Ms Alanna Bell has announced she will retire after 32 years of teaching and leading public schools across NSW.

Ms Bell, who has been the principal at Gorokan Public School for the past eight and a half years, began teaching in the early 1980s at Moree Public School.

She has worked at numerous schools throughout her career, including Cessnock East, Belmont and Kanwal Public Schools.

Gorokan Public School assistant principal Mr Jason Clenton said that during her time at Gorokan, Ms Bell has continued to demonstrate her educational leadership by transforming the school’s physical surrounds and implementing a number of quality teaching initiatives.

“The school environment has been transformed with mosaic garden beds highlighting the core values of public education, an aboriginal mural in the school foyer made from tiles painted by every student, a major hall upgrade including a backdrop projection screen for school musicals and a school vegetable garden and chicken pen,” Mr Clenton said.

Mr Clenton also said Ms Bell has overseen the building of five new permanent classrooms at Gorokan which replaced the school’s decaying demountable building.

“In recent years, Alanna has seen the school transformed into a 21st century learning community, with interactive smart boards installed in every classroom, the school fitted with WiFi and 90 iPads purchased so that all students can engage in technology assisted learning during the week,” Mr Clenton said.

“Another major achievement for Alanna was the establishment of the school as a community centre initiative, which has provided valuable community services and support for parents and younger students before they reach school age.

“Throughout Alanna’s time at Gorokan, staff development and student achievement, behaviour and welfare have been a priority.”

Gorokan Public School deputy principal Ms Vicki Young said she has seen the school go from

strength to strength under Ms Bell’s leadership.

“Students feel safe and are proud to be learners at Gorokan Public School,” Ms Young said.

“Attendance has improved, almost all students are wearing school uniform and positive student welfare practices have reduced suspension rates significantly over the past eight years.”

Reflecting on her time at Gorokan Public School, Ms Bell said the staff at the school had worked hard to ensure that all students received a quality education in a caring environment.

Ms Bell will be farewelled by students on Friday, August 16, with a special school assembly to thank her for her many years of devoted service in education.

A history book is currently being complied and will be available to be purchased on the day of the fair.

The school is currently looking for recollections, memorabilia and photos from ex-students of the school to be included in the book.

The school is also seeking items to be used in the creation of the old time classroom.

Ourimbah Public School first opened in October 1863, with Miss Elizabeth Bristowe as the school teacher.

It had an initial enrolment of 13 boys and 18 girls.

It is the oldest school on the Central Coast and this year, has 403 pupils enrolled.

yong Council’s newest playground, complete with a 25 metre long double flying fox, was officially opened by Wyong mayor Cr Doug Eaton on Saturday, August 3.

The state of the art playground is located at Sohier Park, Ourimbah, on the corner of Ken Cook Way and Shirley St. Cr Eaton said the playground had been four and a half years in the planning after council had made a resolution to construct it in November 2008.

“Our staff have done a fantastic job with the design and construction of the playground and I know that it is already proved extremely popular with local residents who have long called for a facility like this in the Ourimbah area,” Cr Eaton said.

“Throughout the consultation phase,

which involved 500 letters sent to residents, all responses received by council were extremely favourable, including the direct consultation with the Ourimbah Precinct Committee and Ourimbah Neighbourhood playground.

“I encourage everyone to get along and experience the playground first hand because it really is a state of the art facility with some wonderful equipment for the kids to enjoy.”

The playground caters for children aged between two and 12 years.

Along with the flying fox, it features a 7.4 metre high net climbing

structure, an explorative dinosaur skeleton, swings, a slide and spring toys.

It also has a large shelter, bike racks and seating for adults.

“In May, the Member for The Entrance Chris Spence and I jointly opened a new amenities block at the Ourimbah soccer field, where council had also spent money on new floodlights, drainage and levelling the playing field,” Cr Eaton said.

“We have also recently completed new cricket nets at Ourimbah.”

Imprints exhibition at The Entrance

rt Central, in collaboration with ERTH – Visual and Physical Incorporated – will launch the Imprints 2013 exhibition at The Entrance on Friday, August 16.

This year’s exhibition, titled “The Museum of our Futures Past”, features new works by 22 Central Coast artists.

It incorporates traditional and new media with works encapsulating visual, audio, taste, smell and performance.

At the core of this sensory exhibition will be an interactive dugong inspired by the dugong

carving at Bulgandry Aboriginal Engravings Site.

The interactive dugong was created in collaboration by ERTH and the Central Coast artists.

Imprints is part of the Art Central program and is funded by Arts NSW in partnership with Gosford Council and Wyong Council.

It aims to increase professional arts activity across the Central Coast.

entral Coast Conservatorium guitar tutor Mr Guy Strazz will present a Brazilian jazz music concert on Friday, August 23, at The Entrance Art Gallery from 8pm.

The program will feature songs in the choro and samba styles, long considered to be the original urban pop-dance music of Brazil.

These styles are exemplified by artists such as Pixinguinha and multi-instrumentalist and composer Pascoal Hermeto.

Consummate singer Ms Marilane de Mello, from Rio de Janeiro, will add her sultry tones to some bossa nova style numbers, with the band providing a sound that has been described as a fusion of Brazilian music and jazz.

Fans of Tom Jobin,

who wrote “The Girl from Ipanema”, will be delighted by Ms de Mello’s renditions.

The program will also draw on the extensive repertoire of prominent Brazilian singer/ songwriter/guitarist Mr Milton Nascimento.

As well as Mr Strazz on a number of guitars and Ms de Mello on vocals, the band will feature Junichi Shiomi on bass guitar, Roberto Balfas on percussion, Raphael Strazz on drums and local jazz aficionado Rodric White on keys.

Mr White was a finalist in the National Jazz Piano Competition in 1999 and

has a number of CDs to his credit.

He recently played for Paul Grabowsky in a jazz improvisation master class at Central Coast Conservatorium.

Mr Strazz also has a number of CDs out and plays with numerous bands in Sydney, Newcastle and on the Central Coast.

His diverse cultural influences are evident in the line-up and repertoire for this concert.

Big donations for Give Me Five for Kids

Mr Hughes joined 2GO’s Give Me Five for Kids bed pan challenge and donned a bright green monster onesie in support of sick kids on the Coast.

Mr Hughes elicited a $1,000 donation from ACS, $300 from The Beach

Early Learning Centre, $100 from Central Coast Cleaning Supply Shop, $100 from Living Green Designer Homes and $50 each from Totally Workwear Tuggerah, Goodyear Autocare Gosford, City Plan Services, Outback Plumbing Australia, Greenroom Espresso Cafe, The Sanctuary Cafe (Ken Duncan Gallery), Precision Fire Protection Services, Figtree and Moran Accountants, Power2Grid and KR Jones and Healey.

Mr Hughes then ventured

to Westmead Children’s Hospital on Friday, June 21, to accept a thank you gift from Head of the Rehabilitation Unit Ms Mary Claire Doherty for a donation of $9,000 made by Warren and his wife Donna on behalf of ACS. “If ever you think you are doing it tough, come to the kid’s hospital for a day and see the challenge many of these little ones face on a daily basis,” said Mr Hughes.

“It brings you back to earth very quickly.”

Club, not only were staff encouraged to wear their pyjamas to work, but also club members and guests.

The club’s staff were given a challenge to raise over $200 which would see the club’s newly appointed CEO Mr Bill Jackson wear his pyjamas for the day, and the staff succeeded in the challenge.

Despite having a number of appointments scheduled for the day, Mr Jackson attended the meetings in his pink polka dot pyjama pants and slippers.

To further encourage members and guests to wear their pyjamas, Ettalong Beach Club provided free entertainment with an arts and crafts table set up for

the kids.

The kids also participated in a disco and face painting as well as a movie showing on the large projector screen.

For a gold coin donation, a coffee station was available for the mums and dads while the kids were being entertained.

“The fundraising of these funds back into the children’s ward at the local hospitals is one of the most humbling and rewarding days for the club,” said Mr Jackson.

“I’m proud to announce at the recent Board of Directors meeting held June 13, the Board resolved to donate a further $5,000 to 2GO’s Give Me Five for Kids 2013.”

It is estimated that Chrome Fest injected over $8.5 million last year into the local community, with strong support from local community groups and organizations.

entral Coast event, Chrome Fest, has been nominated in the Specialty Press Events and Tourism Award Category for the 2013 NSW-ACT Regional Achievement and Community Awards to be announced on Saturday, October 26.

The annual awards program, initiated by PRIME7 and the Commonwealth Bank, provides an opportunity for communities to showcase their events and festivals and be recognized state-wide.

Chrome Fest is a three day event held in October at The Entrance which pays tribute to American classic cars, hot rods, low-rider bicycles, rock and roll and rockabilly of the 1950s and 60s.

Since its establishment in 2009, Chrome Fest has grown in popularity.

Give Me Five for Kids is a fundraising initiative supported by over 40 radio and TV stations across regional Australia.

For almost 20 years, the month of June has been dedicated to raising much needed funds for local community hospitals.

he Mars Food Australia Gosford New Year’s Eve Festival has been selected as a finalist in the Festivals and Events category of the 2013 Qantaslink Hunter and Central Coast Awards for Excellence in Tourism.

“The Mars Food Australia Gosford New Year’s Eve Festival is an exciting action packed annual event, held on December 31 each year on the Gosford Waterfront,” said Gosford Business Improvement District (GBID) manager Mr Paul Brasch.

“This Festival is the only professionally organised and managed end of year

event in the Gosford Local Government Area and is sustainably funded.

Walking group reduces health risks

Crib Space at Toukley t Luke’s Anglican Church at Toukley is offering young children an opportunity to have fun and adults a time to socialise with its Crib Space program.

Crib Space runs every Wednesday at 11am and gives youngsters time to make new friends, have stories read to them and develop social skills.

There is also play equipment in a safely enclosed area and various toys for the little ones to enjoy.

The program allows accompanying adults to share their parenting experiences with each

other, while still spending time with their children.

A free morning tea is included.

The supervised walks are conducted at Mingara’s level rubberised athletics track and a number of residents from the adjoining Glengara Retirement Village participate.

Stuchberry formed the walking group in July 2011.

“Darren and his team John, Andrew and Chris lead us through a varied routine of exercises three times a week, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning at 7:30am,” Glengara resident Mr John Lord

said.

“We start with a warm up for half an hour and then the exercise routine begins.”

The individual progress of each person is monitored, with feedback being beneficial for the increase in fitness.

The aim of the group is to improve fitness and

various motor skills.

Glengara resident Ms Noelene Thomas said the group has been a great benefit to all participants.

“The routine includes stretching, balance, breathing, muscle tone etc and you progress at your own pace,” Ms Thomas said.

The Entrance almost caused an upset in their first round clash but Gosford, with big things to play for later in the season, would not want to falter at this stage.

Two tries to leaping Magpie Alex Lash set the tone for the afternoon and Adam McEwen’s men raced to a 30-6 advantage by half-time.

Playing their 100th games for the Magpies, Ourimbah favourites Jason Easton and Ben New celebrated in style.

Both players managed to cross the stripe in the convincing win against Erina.

The result enabled Ourimbah to surge ahead of Kincumber into sixth place on the ladder; the Colts narrowly beaten by competition leaders Terrigal 10-7 in a contest at MacKillop Oval.

In the other round 15 games, the Berkeley Vale Panthers moved to second place after grounding out a 24-4 win over The Entrance.

Toukley followed the

previous week’s upset victory over Umina with a 40-12 win over the Northern Lakes Warriors at Darren Kennedy Oval.

Woy Woy suffered their first loss of the past two months when beaten 36-34

Mariners to play first A-League match at North Sydney Oval

entral Coast Mariners will play their first ever Hyundai A-League match at the North Sydney Oval when the club hosts Wellington Phoenix on Thursday, December 19.

The match is part of a festive football feast for the Mariners and is anticipated to attract a considerable crowd as fans prepare for the end of their work year.

With one in five Mariners members currently residing south of the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Coast Mariners majority owner Mr Michael Charlesworth said taking the game to North Sydney Oval in December underlined the club’s intent to grow its solid supporter base in an area well known for its love of football.

“Football is the participation sport of choice in Sydney’s northern suburbs with tens of thousands of active male and female players,” Mr Charlesworth said.

“We want to collect emotionally with football fans who are not already aligned with the Mariners to build on the fantastic supporter base that is already alive in the area.

“Historically we have worked closely with football associations north of the Harbour Bridge and

we will be re-energising these relationships over the coming months as we bid to engage North Shore locals with our club prior to, during and following the game against the Phoenix.

“With 20% of our members living in the Sydney’s northern suburbs, we already regard the region as an extension of Mariners territory.

“We want to encourage even more supporters from the area to routinely make the short trip up the freeway to see our champion team in action.

“To show them what we’re about, we’ve decided to take a game to them.”

Mr Charlesworth said the club would be assisting its Coast-based fans to make the trip south to North Sydney Oval on match day by providing $10 return bus tickets to the game via local company Coast Liner.

He also said club members would be offered significantly discounted

ticket prices for the encounter.

“We want our core fan base who live on the Coast to embrace this initiative and be part of an exclusive and distinctive chapter in our history,” Mr Charlesworth said.

“Their positivity about the club and match will help influence football fans who live north of the Harbour Bridge to jump on board.

“Long term, this will enable us to grow many aspects of the club.”

Up to 60,000 people currently make the daily commute from the Central Coast to Sydney for work.

Ordinarily, some Mariners supporters are not able to make a 7:30pm kick-off in Gosford due to travel times, however, it is hoped many will choose to factor the fixture into their route home.

Malau’s first try came from a set play 30 metres from the Mt Pritchard line.

Half Johnno Ford feigned an open side play late in the tackle count and Mounties took the bait, expecting a quick shift to their left side.

Mitch Williams attacked the short side from acting half, putting Malau into space down the western touchline with a long cut out pass.

Malau did the rest and raced unopposed to the corner.

Ford missed the conversion and the Roos led 4-0.

Williams was involved in Malau’s second try after kicking deep into the Mounties in-goal area.

Mounties’ wing Billy Tupou tried to shepherd the ball over the dead ball line, but Malau dived at speed and gained some downward pressure on the rolling ball.

Ford failed to convert, with the Roos ahead 8-0.

Mounties struck back when back row Jarrad Kennedy hit the Wyong line at pace and spun out of some ineffective tackles to plant the ball beneath the posts.

The Roos spurned the opportunity for two further points, electing to attempt to land the killer blow.

Wyong went to a wellrehearsed double second man play, with fullback Grant Nelson sweeping wide to give Malau enough space to cross in the corner.

Ford missed a difficult conversion and the Roos looked all but home at 2416.

However, as full-time approached, Mounties’ Scott Jones crossed the

line.

The Roos were good to hold the score at 2420, though, until the final hooter.

Vunakece was Wyong’s best player this game, charging with venom deep into the Mounties defence each attacking set.

O’Mally stood tall in defence and Ford superbly managed the attack.

The Roos host Auckland Vulcans at Kanwal on Sunday, August 18, at 3pm.

The Roos secured the points on their trip to New Zealand earlier in the season, and the Warriors feeder team will no doubt be looking to return the favour.

Celebrating the club’s 35th anniversary in front of a big crowd, Killarney Vale completely dominated the Cardiff side, who were missing key midfielders Liam Gibson, Isaac Heeney and Ben Stewart.

The Bombers jumped out of the blocks and with Black Diamond AFL Rising Star favourite Josh Mifsud having an influence in the midfield, they were able to keep Cardiff goal less and lead by 36 points at the first change.

With Cardiff unable to contain the Bombers’ many avenues to goal, the Killarney Vale side were able to extend their lead at every change before winning by a convincing 112 points.

Apart from Mifsud, skipper Brendan Lewis

had a strong game and was also able to get forward to kick three goals.

Justin Daley and Corey Shackleton also stood out in a team with few passengers.

Brad Edwards and Daniel Lloyd were the most successful forwards, finishing with four goals apiece.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday, August 24, in the first semi-final.

While this result will have little bearing on that match, the fact that the margin was in excess of 100 points and the Hawks were only able to kick one goal will mean Cardiff coach Adam Dugan has some work to do.

In First Division, Wyong Lakes’ chances of playing in this year’s finals have ended with a 13.8.86 to 6.9.45 loss to Maitland at Don Small Oval.

Needing a win to keep their hopes of finals berth alive, Wyong Lakes had the better first half and led by 14 points at halftime.

The Magpies, however, were unable to match their opponents after the long break.

They were unable to kick a goal in the secondhalf and went down to the Maitland side by 41 points.

Central Coast Sevens to be televised he Fitness First Central Coast Sevens International Rugby Festival has signed an innovative new partnership that will see the rugby sevens tournament broadcast into over 36 pubs, clubs and hotels within NSW.

The partnership, which was signed on Thursday, July 25, will also allow live streaming of the event, taking the tournament to a global audience.

BarTV, a dynamic and innovative entertainment medium, have signed on to film and broadcast the two day event, which will take place on Saturday, October 26, and Sunday, October 27, at Wyong Rugby League Club, Kanwal.

The tournament will feature some of Australia’s most famous rugby clubs taking on the might of international competitors from around

the Asia Pacific region in both men’s and women’s matches.

Four powerhouse teams from Fiji and the Kanto and Hakkaido Champion Rugirl 7 from Japan are among the international teams set to compete.

As well as rugby, the festival will also feature cultural performances, international foods, music, market stalls and a variety of interactive activities to keep the family entertained.

The new partnership with BarTV will see the tournament enhance the already prestigious international reputation

of the event.

The tournament is regarded as Australia’s premier rugby sevens festival outside of the International World Series.

The game of rugby sevens is set for a massive period of growth in the lead up to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

It is also tipped to be one of the most popular sports in the 2014 Commonwealth Games to be held in Scotland.

Archers, cricketers and Sevens partnership students receive grants extended ustralia’s Fitness First Central Coast Sevens International Rugby Festival and the Bayleys Fiji Coral Coast Sevens have announced that they will extend their partnership to the female competition.

hildren at Tuggerah Lakes Field Archers are hoping to hit a bullseye following a $1,200 grant from Telstra’s Kids Fund program.

The local organisation will now be able to purchase new archery equipment to train its 84 young members in archery and promote the sport to the community.

The archery club is just one of three local recipients on the Central Coast.

Telstra Country Wide Area general manager for the Hunter and Central Coast Mr Chris Cusack said the grants were widely recognised for making a genuine difference to local organisations supporting children.

“Over the past 11 years, Telstra’s Kids Fund has provided $8.3 million to help over 7,000 local organisations across

Australia better support, educate and encourage children,” Mr Cusack said.

“The funds really do make a positive and lasting difference to children’s futures and boost the ability of local organisations to support their community.

“We are proud to be able to help local groups support the skills, talents and development of children.”

Mr Cusack said grant recipients were nominated

by Telstra employees whose children in their immediate family are actively involved in community organisations.

“It is fantastic to have an initiative such as Telstra’s Kids Fund that

encourages employees to support and strengthen their community,” he said.

“It helps connect our staff to the communities where they live and work and make a difference in those communities.”

Gorokan Public School also received a grant and will use the funding towards the purchase of a class set of 30 iPads for students in Years 5 and 6.

Warnervale Cricket Club was the other Central Coast grant recipient and will purchase new playing equipment with its funds, benefitting its members aged between five and 17 years old.

The move, which was announced on Tuesday, August 13, will mean that the winner of each of the women’s competitions will receive an automatic invitation to the “sister” tournament.

The two events, widely regarded as their respective nation’s premier domestic sevens events, developed a relationship in 2011 that sees both tournaments offering their men’s champion an invitation to the other.

This has seen the 2011 Coral Coast champions Wardens contest the 2012 Central Coast event and reaching the semi-finals with a team featuring a number of the Fijian National Sevens side.

Meanwhile, the 2011 Central Coast champions Sunnybank contested the Coral Coast Sevens, taking on the best of Fiji at the spiritual home of sevens rugby.

tournament director Mr Craig Morgan said he was delighted by the announcement.

“Our women’s tournament is of extremely high quality, as is the Coral Coast, and we are very proud to be able to offer our women’s champion an invitation to Fiji,” Mr Morgan said.

Mr Morgan also said he was looking forward to welcoming the Coral Coast champions to the 2014 Central Coast tournament.

“With international women’s sevens being the fastest growing team sport in the world, this partnership will benefit the game in the region leading toward the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro,” he said.

Bayleys Fiji Coral Coast tournament director Mr Nick Jordan said both tournaments share an enormous amount of respect for the other.

“A magnificent relationship has

developed leading to the exciting announcement of a reciprocal invitation for women’s teams,” Mr Jordan said.

“On the back of our recent launch of the Crest Na Iri Trophy, [this] announcement is a boost for the women’s game in Oceania.

“The quality of the women’s competition at both tournaments ensures they are regarded as the strongest women’s events in the Southern Hemisphere outside the women’s world series.”

The Fitness First Central Coast Sevens will offer a prize pool of $AUD50,000.

The Bayleys Fiji Coral Coast Sevens has a prize pool of $FJD60,000 and will be held from Thursday, November 14, until Saturday, November 16, at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.

The Wallabies were defeated 23-21 in front of a new ground record crowd of 52,499.

The Wallabies would have won the match had they not missed four kicks at goal, two of which were in

the last ten minutes.

The match was lit up by two of the best solo tries in recent memory, to George North for the Lions and Israel Folau for the Wallabies (twice), who scored individual tries as the Lions held on for the nail-biting victory, after the Wallabies were severely disrupted by four injuries to key backline players.

Ashley-Cooper was replaced with four minutes to go by reserve scrumhalf Nick Phipps.

The teams now move on to Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, June 29, for what is sure to be a thrilling second test of the three.

Rogic features in win over Iraq Football Federation Australia

ormer Central Coast Mariners’ player Tom Rogic was called on as a substitute in the 60th minute of the Socceroos’ match against Iraq on Tuesday, June 18.

The match was the final qualification match for Australia’s group with the top two earning direct qualification to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Rogic troubled the Iraqi defence before Josh Kennedy scored the winning goal in the 1-0 victory.

Needing a win to assure a spot at a third straight World Cup, the Socceroos looked like blowing their chance

as the stubborn visitors held firm for more than 82 minutes.

But in his first Socceroos appearance in 19 months, Kennedy came off the bench to nod home Mark Bresciano’s cross seven minutes from time to send the crowd of 80,532 into delirium.

Australia boss Holger Osieck received a few boos from the home fans when he opted to substitute favourite son Tim Cahill for Kennedy just a few minutes earlier.

But the decision proved a masterstroke as Kennedy did what he does best, giving Iraq ‘keeper Noor Sabri no chance with a wellplaced header from just six

yards out.

The nail-biting victory meant the Socceroos finished second in their group behind Japan and avoided going into the lottery of the play-offs later this year.

Knowing a win over the inexperienced Iraqi’s would ensure Australia’s berth for a third straight World Cup, there was a sense of excited anticipation amongst the fans before kick-off.

Searching for ways to unlock the stubborn Iraqi defence, Holger Osieck introduced young star Tom Rogic on the hour and the Celtic midfielder immediately lifted the tempo.

The Socceroos thought

they had the crucial breakthrough 25 minutes from time when a poor headed clearance landed perfectly for Kruse to volley home from just outside the box.

But celebrations soon turned to despair as Iranian referee Faghani Alireza had already blown for a foul by Ognenovski in the lead-up.

The close call only added to the tension, which soon turned to shock among the home fans as Cahill made way for Kennedy.

And the beanpole striker took just six minutes to make an impact, sending his header past Sabri to get celebrations underway.

The training camp was part of the Qantas Socceroos preparation for the upcoming EAFF East Asian Cup 2013 in Seoul.

It was the first of three camps in Australia to be held in the lead up to the East Asian Cup. The Cup will take place in the Korean Republic from July 20 to 28.

At a reception held by Gosford Council, Minister for Sport Senator Don Farrell and Member for Robertson Ms Deborah O’Neill congratulated the players on their World Cup qualification.

entral Coast Adventist School Year 10 student Jayden Hodgson is currently in America competing in the Adidas National Camp and Tournament in South Beach California as part of the Australian basketball team.

“This is a huge camp with many countries attending and the top 40 American students,” said Jayden’s mum Stacey.

In January this year Jayden was a member of the NSW Waratahs U18 Country Basketball team that won the Australian Country Basketball Cup at Albury.

From this tournament he was selected as captain of the NSW Country team to

compete at the Australian U18 championships in Queensland in April.

“Jayden is classed as bottom age and is still eligible to play in the same age group next year,” said Ms Hodgson.

“He is the only student from his school ever to make NSW Combined Open basketball team which won the All School State Championships.

“Jayden has another two years at making this team again as it is an open team with students up to and including Year 12.”

As a result of Jayden’s performance in last year’s U16 Nationals he was selected in a 20 man Australian squad to train for the World U17 Basketball Championships in 2014.

The squad has had three camps at the Australian

Institute of Sport (AIS) where players have been dropped and others added.

“He has just received notice that he is invited back to the AIS in August as part of the final 16 man squad,” said Ms Hodgson.

A team of 10 will be picked from this camp to play in the Oceania Series against New Zealand in Melbourne where the winning country will represent Oceania in the 2014 U17 World Basketball Championships in Dubai in June next year.

Jayden has also been part of an Australian squad that attended the Asia Nike Basketball camp in China.

“Jayden is working so very hard to hold his position in these squads and teams as your performance is regularly tested,” said Ms Hodgson.

The partnership agreement aims to provide Gosford City exposure at a national and international level and focuses on a range of community benefits including youth, recreational and sporting development opportunities, increased tourism and visitor attraction to the region.

Council sponsored the Central Coast Mariners between 2008 and 2011 in conjunction with Wyong Council, Business Central

Coast and the Department of State and Regional Development for a total of approximately $440,000.

Council concluded its sponsorship of the club following the 2010-2011 season.

While the joint sponsorship of the Mariners was successful, Council had resolved to investigate opportunities to sponsor other regional activities, projects and joint ventures in the marketing of Gosford City.

The Central Coast Mariners have built a reputation as the most consistent team in the national competition’s history, as four time grand finalists, two time premiers and 2013 Hyundai A-League Champions.

Following their success, the Central Coast Mariners reapproached Gosford

Council with the opportunity to become a sleeve sponsor for the next three seasons commencing this year.

The partnership will provide Gosford Council with exposure at a national level through the Hyundai A-League competition and at an international level through the Asian Champions League (ACL).

Four ACL games were held in Gosford against competing teams from March to May and drew crowds of up to 8,000 people, accompanied by large visiting delegations from overseas supporting their respective teams.

The funding of $120,000 per year for three seasons, totalling $360,000, will be sourced from Council’s To u r i s m - B u s i n e s s Development Special Levy.

he Central Coast Adventist School junior boys’ and junior girls’ touch football teams competed at the Central Coast Regional Touch Football

Championships at Adcock Park on July 30.

Undefeated in their round games, the boy’s football team lost in the semi-final game against a strong opponent.

The team still managed

to place third overall for the Central Coast.

The girls’ football team did not qualify for the semifinals, despite playing a number of impressive games in the round games.

Overall, they placed sixth out of a possible 18.

helly Beach Surf Life Saving Club’s Donald Van Keimpema has been awarded Surf Sports Official of the Year at the annual Surf Life Saving NSW Awards of Excellence held in Sydney on Saturday, August 3.

The award recognised Mr Van Keimpema’s significant contribution towards the area of coaching, with commitment shown to officiating and official’s educational development.

Mr Keimpema has officiated at many local events and at all major carnivals for many years.

He has worked behind the scenes in an organisational capacity and has played a major role in many state and Australian titles.

Mr Keimpema has also presented and facilitated at many clinics, conferences and courses held locally, interstate and overseas.

He has mentored a number of officials over

a long period of time and has been a member of many working parties to continually improve surf sports.

Also recognised at the awards was the Central Coast’s Aaron Camp, who was awarded Initiative of the Year for the program “The Project”.

“The Project” is a participant-led endeavour where participants learn skills that are immediately transferrable to their clubs through initiating and implementing the key activities invoked through the program.

These include networking, budgeting, public speaking and social media awareness.

Additionally, the program this year took

the participants to visit Arcadian Surf Life Saving Club in Far North Queensland to expose them to significantly different lifesaving challenges than would be face at the members’ own clubs.

Through the program, the branch has seen record engagement with the Surf Life Saving NSW Youth Opportunity Makers Program with 18 applicants received.

This initiative is set to improve member retention and engagement and will provide a platform to develop future leaders.

entral Coast Football has celebrated its 50th anniversary with a celebratory dinner and presentation held at the Mingara Recreation Club on Saturday, July 27.

Nearly 370 guests attended the event to see five of the Central Coast’s most outstanding players become the inaugural inductees into the newlyformed Central Coast Football Hall of Fame.

Damien Brown, Andrew Clarke, Renaye Iserief, Andrew French and Dale Eggleton were all recognised for their sporting achievements.

The evening also saw the launch of a 422 page full-colour book detailing the history of soccer from the early 1950s through to the present day.

Written and produced

by Alistair Kennedy and Kevin Best, “The History of Central Coast Football” is the culmination of nearly three years of research undertaken by a sevenman history committee established by Central

Coast Football in 2010.

The book comprises a chronological coverage of each season from 1963 through to 2012 and includes junior and senior men’s and women’s club and representative competitions.

It also covers the remarkable success story of the Central Coast Mariners from 2005-06 through to their triumph in the 2012-13 A-League grand final.

There are extended profiles of the five Hall of Fame inductees, life members and other notable contributors.

The book concludes with 75 pages of comprehensive records and statistics.

Guests at the dinner included Wyong mayor Cr Doug Eaton, Gosford mayor Cr Lawrie McKinna and Football

NSW chairman Mr Greg O’Rourke.

Central Coast Mariners chairman and group general manager Mr Peter Turnbull, director and owner Mr Michael Charlesworth, head coach Mr Graham Arnold and player Patrick Zwaanswijk also attended the event.

Central Coast Football, formerly the Central Coast Soccer Association, was formed in 1963 with five constituent clubs, 19 teams and 230 registered players.

This year, there are 23 clubs ranging from Gwandalan in the north to Umina in the south.

With nearly 13,000 players, it is the third largest football association in Australia.

Mingara extends contract with Central Coast Academy of Sport ingara Recreation Club has signed a new three year business partnership with the Central Coast Academy of Sport (CCAS).

Mingara Recreation Club is a founding partner of the CCAS and has, since day one, provided an administration centre, significant financial support to multiple programs and facility usage at the regional athletics track, pool and gymnasium.

The club has also supported the annual CCAS Academy Games

touring team and has provided the host venue for the annual gala awards evening that is a highlight on the local sporting calendar.

Since opening in 2004, the CCAS has provided scholarship positions for over 2,500 athletes across no less than twenty sporting programs.

Mingara has supported all of those opportunities

in some way.

To watch the development of local talent and the social cost savings a local academy of sport has provided has been a catalyst for Mingara to continue its valued support.

CCAS managing director Mr Ian Robilliard said the announcement was another step in the building of regional

capacity to deliver sporting programs of the highest quality.

“Without Mingara, we simply do not exist in our current form,” Mr Robilliard said.

“The support, friendship and genuine interest across both board and senior management is fantastic and I’m absolutely delighted that Mingara have extended its founding support for another three years.

“This will take the

support into 2016 and beyond.

“In a commercial market where funds and value in kind support is restricted, if not diminishing, this announcement demonstrates just how committed Mingara is to our region.”

Mingara Group CEO Mr Paul Barnett said Mingara was proud to have been associated with the CCAS since its conception in 2004.

“The CCAS is instrumental in assisting with the development of young athletes on the Central Coast and as one of their major sponsors, we are pleased to be part of their program which develops athletes in our local community to reach their full potential,” Mr Barnett said.
