New design, new style and some cool new features too!! With a new issue every six months there will be plenty to talk about. We welcome any story ideas and/or copy submissions.

Great new masthead using overlapping type to represent our “connected” community.

We plan on featuring different interesting community members in each issue.

From your digital file you can click on any website url or email address and be taken straight there.

Revamped Program Guide Hits Desktops Community-Wide Welcome to the newly redesigned version of the Corydon Connection magazine. Some things haven’t changed, Connection is still the place to check for all community club recreation and activity information – programs, contact info, registration dates – all the information you need. We also want to add more of the info you want – stories about the community and the people in it. We get it going this issue with a feature on local hockey player Zach Court. We have changed our look to more closely tie to our amalgamated Comet brand and hopefully, at the same time, have made the book easier to navigate and read. Enjoy!!

All they want to do is

Corydon Community Centre hopes to be recognized as a community leader in sports and recreation. Our mission is to provide accessible recreational opportunities to promote well-being and a sense of community in the neighborhood. There are many children in our area who are restricted from participating in sport because of cost. So, we have started a fund to provide financial assistance for sports and programs that are not covered under our normal program subsidy, such as summer camps and ice draft. Please contact 204.488.7000 to donate or if you would like to learn more about this important initiative.

www.corydoncc.com

8 Donations The Corydon Community Centre has been part of the community for over 60 years. The Centre is partially funded by the City of Winnipeg. However, each year the Centre must rely on fundraising and donations in order to continue to meet the needs of our community.

17 Registration Options

Refunds

Registration fees can be paid by cash, debit, Visa or MasterCard. Registration can be done in person or by phone. Phone registrations are by Visa or MasterCard only and an email will be sent confirming your registration.

Full refunds will be issued when a program is cancelled.

Please leave a detailed message on 204.488-7000 ext. 210 and we will get back to you that same day. Please note: in person registrations will be dealt with first. Your patience is appreciated.

For sessions of eight weeks or more, no refund will be given after the third week of classes.

Registration is not complete until fees are paid and necessary forms are completed and submitted. Every child that wants to be in sport deserves to be in a sport. Subsidies are available. Anyone who requires financial support, please call office for assistance.

Refunds will be prorated from the date the office receives and confirms notice of withdrawal.

Fees Activity Fees Each program or sport has a fee based on the actual costs of providing the program (. ie: league registration fees, equipment, uniforms, instruction, etc.) and has its own budget w . hich is predicated on a break-even formula. Fee details are listed in each programs description. Participation Fees This fee is levied for each activity per participant to contribute towards facility enhancements.

A $20.00 administration fee applies to all refund requests other than program cancellation.

To qualify for a refund, the office must be notified of the withdrawal prior to the end of the third week.

Late Registrations A late fee of $30.00 per family will be charged effective September 13th. This is necessary due to the additional administration which occurs when registration is late. In some instances, teams have been formed, league fees paid and uniforms ordered. Our philosophy is such that anyone who wants to participate should be accommodated, but it must be recognized that there are extra costs incurred with late registrations and is not always possible. Please register before the deadline to avoid late fees!!!!

Sports

Sport Team Formations

Volunteer Opportunities

All teams are formed based on the number of registered players-if numbers warrant, 2 or 3 teams may be formed in one age group in certain sports. If teams are playing in the same division they will be as equally balanced as possible. If numbers are such that there are too many to be placed on one team but not enough for an additional team to be formed, then players will have to be transferred to the next community centre needing players. The method used to decide which players are to be transferred is:

We are always looking for parent and community involvement. Please note that there are many ways to get involved in our sports and we welcome all those interested in any of the below to contact us.

1. Late registrations 2. Volunteers to transfer 3. Players from outside Corydon catchment 4. Lottery

After teams are made don’t forget to register in person at your host team’s site for volunteer duties.

Hockey Hockey Families, I hope everyone is having a great summer and has had the chance to take advantage of the sports and activities the community center has to offer. Hockey registration is just around the corner and if you can believe it tryouts as well. Please make sure you register on time to make the process run smoothly. We require volunteers through this stressful time of September, if you could sign up at the office and let them know your availability that would be helpful. We hope your child’s experience will be a positive one and they continue on with hockey for many years. I hope you all understand the countless hours devoted by your child’s coaching staff not only with practices and games, but with practice preparation and coaching clinics they must attend. Coaches and parents are not perfect and conflicts can occur, your parent liaison is there for these type of issues. The liaison will have the opportunity to touch base with me if they think it is out of their control and feel uncomfortable with the situation. It is extremely important that your children come away with a positive experience and are eager to play hockey the following year. Have a great year and be kind to the referees – that could be your son or daughter one day. Jeff Van Norman

2015-2016 will be the fourth year of online registration for hockey in our area (APHA – Assiniboine Park Hockey Association) during the month of August and start of September. Registration will be online directly with Hockey Canada’s Database and payment will also be made online by Visa or MasterCard. We still need you in person to sign up for our volunteer duties at Corydon CC. The hockey program will again be utilizing the $100 volunteer bond per family.

ONLINE HOCKEY REGISTRATION (Please note one parent per family must complete the Respect in Sport Parent Program). NEW ONLINE REGISTRATION LINK: https://registration.hockeycanada.ca/Registration/?ID=944 There will still be some grandfathering allowed for kids 16+ from Crescentwood who wish to continue playing with their friends in Fort Garry, they must however register at Corydon CC and be transferred or register directly with the Fort Garry Twins AA organization. As a reminder, for traveling hockey, it is our goal at Corydon CC and within the APHA to have uniformity with respect to tryouts, team practices and ice schedules. The APHA has adopted the Hockey Handbook as a guide for ALL teams within the APHA to follow for players, coaches, managers and parents. The hockey handbook can be viewed on the APHA website www.aphamb.ca. Remember this is a reference guide not gospel. For team formations, every effort is made to ensure Corydon CC and all clubs in the APHA follow a fair and equitable process. Remember you must register to tryout. If you choose to play in another program after the number of teams in each category has been formed, we will only refund half your money. This reason is simple; once the number of teams has been formed we are committed to those numbers so any drop in players is catastrophic.

22 The traveling program is “grass roots” hockey, where participation, fair play and competitiveness are always the goal. Corydon CC shares the belief of equal playing time, playing in a respectful manner and having fun. Parents should also be respectful of the enormous amount of time and energy our coaches/managers dedicate both on & off the ice to run a successful team. If you haven’t volunteered in the past few years with a team please help out this year! Finally I would ask that everyone be mindful that the referees are young and developing and learning the game too. Without our current crop of returning referees we would not be able to play any games. I trust that you will give them the respect and consideration they deserve as if they were your own child! Let’s play some hockey!

Corydon House League (Age 5-6) Corydon CC runs an in-house league exclusively at River Heights Arena. The number of players is restricted to manageable numbers (max of 12-13 players per team). Starting in early October, an initiation program of 6 sessions will be held to assist the players with some basic skills. The season consists of 18 indoor games. Teams will practice once and sometimes twice a week, typically outdoors. We do encourage our teams to participate outside the club in tournaments and exhibition games to prepare the players for traveling hockey and have the added experience of playing new teams. When we assign teams, our top priority is equal skill level. We TRY to keep friends together, but there is NO guarantee this can be done. We only adjust for balance, not because a player wants to be with their friends. It is also HIGHLY recommended that young skaters enroll in a Learn to Skate program. This league is based on a non-competitive environment and good sportsmanship.

APHA House League (Age 7-8) Corydon CC participates in our area association house league with five other APHA (Assiniboine Park Hockey Association) community centres. Each of the community centres form teams based on their registration numbers. The season consists of 18-20 indoor games starting in November and winding up in February. Teams will play 1-2 games per week and will practice once or sometimes twice per week. The season finishes off with double knock out playoffs. The league is designed to focus on skill development and participation. Boys and girls are welcome. The registration fees include a 6 session Initiation Program for all participants (female novice is also included in the initiation program). Apha Female Hockey Program WELCOME TO BEAR COUNTRY! Every year, female hockey is growing. To support this growth, our female hockey program is implementing major changes to promote and enhance the development of female hockey players in the Assiniboine Park Hockey Association area. Changes that will be coming to the 2015/2016 season for the female hockey program include the following: We have re-branded our female hockey program. Starting this season, not including the AA program, all APHA female hockey teams will fall under the “Polar Bears” female hockey program. This will be consistent through all female hockey programming in the APHA regardless of the community club that hosts a particular age group. New jerseys will be ready for the 2015/2016 season – and they look amazing! More to be announced in the coming months. There will be improvements to the tryout evaluation process for all female players. This evaluation will be similar to the male hockey program and will ensure consistency and standards for both APHA hockey programs. The female tryout schedule is complete and will run from September 20th, 2015 to October 7th, 2015. Please see the APHA website for the tryout schedule details. As an ongoing process, we are working towards a greater emphasis on coaching and player development that will follow Hockey Canada’s guidelines for female hockey players that

register to play hockey within the APHA. A coach mentor will be assigned to the female program to support and ensure that coaches are following these guidelines. In the future, we will be working on having more development camps throughout the year to be offered to APHA girls looking to improve their hockey skills. The APHA website will provide these updates when available.

LOOKING FOR A TEAM? Are you considering playing female hockey this year? If so, we offer a number of competitive and fun divisions for girls as young as five years old to play on an all-female team. The APHA provides girls of all ages with a place to experience and develop their hockey skills in a fun and competitive environment. We have a tiered program for all ages from Novice (8 and under) through Midget, including AA (Rangers) teams. The APHA female teams are created on an area wide basis, that includes; Phoenix, Westdale, Roblin Park, Varsity View, and Corydon. Home games are played out of one of the APHA rinks that will be determined after tryouts held near the end of September. Female hockey is growing and all levels of skill are welcome – new female players of all ages take up this fun sport every year! New players are encouraged to also enrol in a Learn to Skate program, if skating skills need a little work. Novice girls (8 & under) also attend the IP program (8 weeks of skills) at River Heights Arena starting in October. Please note for the 2015/16 season, if your daughter does not wish to play A1 hockey, you have the option to declare A2 at the time of registration and we will automatically place her on the A2 team for her age category.

Uniform Deposits

All first time registrants must provide a copy of their birth certificate or Manitoba Health Card when registering.

All registrants must place a $200.00 deposit (Post-dated cheque made payable to Corydon CC) to be given to the team manager before uniforms are distributed. If uniforms are not returned after the season, the cheque will be cashed.

There are two fee components in hockey: 1) the registration fee, payable to the community centre 2) the ice draft fee, payable to the team manager. Registration fees are based on the cost of providing the program – ice costs, referees, timekeepers, player insurance, league fees and equipment/jersey replacement. The ice draft fee includes the cost of regularly scheduled practice ice. While the amount is the same per team, you can typically expect to pay $200-$250 per player (depending upon how many players per team) for the year. Team managers collect half this fee in October and the remainder in January.

Jerseys Corydon Community Centre jerseys are for game use only. Coaches will not allow game jerseys to be worn at practice. It is the only way to extend the life of the jerseys and curb costs.

Volunteer Bond All hockey registrants must post a $100 volunteer bond (one per family.) Upon completion of 3 hours of volunteer time, this cheque will be destroyed. If volunteer commitment is not met, the cheque will be cashed.

Referees Referees are essential to the game of hockey. If you are interested, please contact Spencer Brason at ric.apha@gmail.ca or www.hockeymanitoba.mb.ca for further information. Fees start at $16.00 per game.

Zach Court is a typical River Heights kid. He’s well-mannered, respectful and polite and he has big dreams coming true before his eyes. Zach will leave the neighbourhood again soon for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders of the USHL – just one of the steps up in a hockey career that started right here... at home in River Heights.

What do you do to prepare for game time?

My goals are to play 4 years of college hockey at NebraskaOmaha while earning a degree and then to hopefully make my living as a professional hockey player.

I’d say my biggest accomplishment so far would be winning back-to-back championships with the Winnipeg Wild in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 as well as winning provincial MVP in 2013-2014.

What makes you unique as a player?

I always have a pre game nap before my pre game meal. Then I head over to the rink, play keep up with a soccer ball, stretch out with my teammates and take a cold shower before putting my equipment on. The cold shower wakes me up!

What’s your favourite meal?

I think my playmaking ability along with my vision and awareness on the ice make me a unique player. Also, I think my ability to be an all around 200 ft. player is a big part of my game.

My favorite meal and pre-game meal is pasta and chicken. My billet family makes it for me before every game.

What are your plans/ hopes for your future in hockey? Outside hockey?

The coaches that have had the biggest impact on my career so far would be Jeff Sveinson with the Assiniboine Park Rangers and Paul Krueger with the Winnipeg Wild, both coaches have taught me valuable skills both on and off the ice.

I enjoy playing golf, baseball and ping-pong in the summer. What do you enjoy doing in your time off from hockey? I enjoy spending time boating, tubing and fishing at our cottage in Lake of the Woods as well as watching Netflix and golfing with my friends. What do you plan on studying at your new university next year?

-1

What’s your biggest accomplishment so far?

What coaches in your past have been your biggest influences thus far?

What other sports do you enjoy participating in?

8

Are you a good teammate? What makes you that way? I try to be a positive teammate that likes to keep the mood light in the dressing room. I’m not a guy that takes it too seriously. If a guy is down I try to pick him up – joking around – that kind of thing.

What do you miss most being away from home? The thing I miss most about being away from home is being with my family and friends. I also miss skating with my brothers Riley (22) and Sam (11) on our backyard rink and being able to watch their hockey games.

Any hockey superstitions? I always put my equipment on left to right and my stick blade can never touch the ground after taping it until I step on the ice. Do you have any specific memories of playing youth sports at the community club level? The best memories I have of playing youth sports is the outdoor practices and games when I played 8A1 and 9A1 with the River Heights Cardinals and Sir John Franklin Explorers.

I’m going to be attending the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 2016-2017 and will be taking business or political science. This season I’m headed back to Cedar Rapids in the USHL.

Ringette registration will take place online only.

Ringette

Go to www.swra.ca for details.

The Ringette Program offers an opportunity for participants to have fun whilst growing both socially and physically by playing a team sport. The Ringette youth program accommodates ages 3 to 18. All Corydon registrants become members of the Southwest Winnipeg Ringette Association www.swra.ca (formerly APFG Ringette Association). This association is run by volunteers and is responsible for organizing amongst other things, registration, assessments, team formation, practice ice, coach support, on ice officials, time keepers, shot clock operators. Please visit the new website for more information. Go to www.swra.ca for details. Online registration will begin in early August. Please register early as we start the team planning process in the first week of September.

Ringette FAQ’s What is Ringette? Ringette is a really fast (some say faster than hockey!!) team sport played on ice with a ring, stick and full protective equipment. Each game consists of two 20-minute periods and takes an hour to complete. Are there any opportunities to try it before committing? Yes, visit www.cometryringette.com for more information and upcoming dates. What is R4U? This is a 3-stage program for our younger players (ages 3-7). Professional instructors teach Ringette fundamentals and skating skills. All players at this level attend an assessment skate and then are placed at an appropriate level. For more information see www.ringette4U.ca My daughter skated in the R4U program last year and we think she is ready to move up, how does this work? Any players born in 2008 that are looking to graduate from the R4U program should register at www.ringette4U.ca for the Early Assessment Sessions hosted by the Manitoba Ringette Association. These begin on Sunday August 16th.

c o r y d o n c o m m u n i t y c e n t r e c o r y d o n CC . c o m

My daughter isn’t a very strong skater, can she play? Beginners, with the exception of the R4U age group (3-7), should ideally possess basic skating skills before registering for the sport. This means they can concentrate on improving their skating and learning the game not just trying to stay upright! How are teams formed at the U10 and U12 levels? In these age groups, assessments are mandatory and will consist of 3 skates in mid to late September (TBA). Whilst SWRA hosts these sessions, the evaluations are all performed by an independent outside party. The assessment information is then used to assist in team formation. What about for the older age groups (U14/U16/U18)? Assessment in these age groups is optional. Only those player looking to play on the A team need register and attend (there is a $50 fee for the tryout). Assessments and team formation are otherwise the same as for the U10 / U12 age groups. How much does it cost? The activity fee for ringette has two components: 1) Registration fee, paid on line at www.swra.ca Estimated fees for the 2015 / 2016 season are found on the chart on the next page. 2) Ice fees, payable to the team manager. This is approximately $200 per season, more if your daughter plays on an A team.

$415 + $50 at optional tryout

* Includes Corydon Community Centre participation fee of $20. If you normally pay the annual fee of $75 it is applied to this. Is there a volunteer bond? Yes. All Corydon ringette registrants are asked for a $75 volunteer bond per family post-dated for March 31, 2016. All we ask is that you give a minimum of 2-3 hours to help ensure that your daughters experience is a great one. The more you put in the better it will be! If the volunteer commitment is not met, the bond will be cashed.

Is there anything I can do to help get my daughter ready for assessments / the new season? In preparation for the 2015-16 season, many players take advantage of the SWS Ringette Skills, Conditioning and Power Skating Camp that commences August 31st and comes to a close on September 13th. See www.southwinnipegsports.ca for details.

Benefits of Speed Skating Often used as a cross trainer for other sports: the elements of balance, coordination, endurance, agility, strength and of course speed which can all be improved upon within a speed skating program. Speed skating is a great additional tool for hockey and ringette players. Excellent record for undertaking practices and competitions in a safe and closely monitored environment.

Toboggan slides are available at all three sites. Get the family together and enjoy the slides.

Supervised lap skating is scheduled for all ages. CSA approved helmets are strongly recommended for all ages. All on-ice participants must be on skates (no baby strollers or carriers). Please comply with the skate patrol requests and help us provide a fun and safe skating environment.
