president’s report Welcome to the 1st edition of the C4 Connection. In an attempt to be much more environmentally friendly we have gone to an electronic version from the older catalogue style. With over 30,000 residents in the new combined area that Central Corydon Community Center (C4) now represents, we felt it was time to make this change. Within this new catchment we know that we have a very diverse demographic to meet the needs of. Here is a little information on who lives in this area: • Total Population 30,000+ • Age 11% under 14 15% seniors (Canadian average is 7%) • Single Family 16% I invite you to explore our new website at www.centralcorydoncc.com and learn more about what is going on at each of our three sites. You will be able to review the calendar of events to learn more about the various programs that are available and to see which ones will fit with your own personal family schedule. With a wide variety of programs and sports to select from, we feel we have something to offer everyone in the community. This was evident this summer with the huge success of our summer camp options. Your C4 Board and its various committees are working on a number of new initiatives all with the goal of improving our service offering

to the residents of the C4 area. We need your help to let us know what we can be doing to enhance your own experience, plus we need your help by volunteering to assist us with the many committees we have underway. Volunteers are the backbone of the community and in the past year alone we estimate 75,000 + volunteer hours were utilized. Currently a major review of our programs/facilities is underway. We will are looking at partnerships and what changes and improvements need to be made to each of the 3 sites we have today to meet the growing and changing needs of our area. Stay tuned as we expect to be holding information meetings in October and November to share with you what our future plans are. It is very important to reiterate, that our plan is to maintain 3 very active and vibrant sites and that we have no plans whatsoever to close any facility. Please pass along any feedback you might have to Jim Carson the General Manager of C4, and of course if you are prepared to donate some of your time to assisting on a committee please also let Jim know.

donations The Central Corydon Community Centre has been part of the community for over 60 years. The Centre is partially funded by the City of Winnipeg. However, each year the Centre must rely on fundraising and donations in order to continue to meet the needs of our community. If you are interested in making a donation to Central Corydon Community Centre please contact Jim Carson, General Manager, Central Corydon Community Centre and he will help make arrangements for this gift. The Community Centre will also accept gifts on behalf of a loved one and of course as part of your own personal estate plan. Estate gifts, which can be of any amount, are received after a donor's lifetime. Support can take several forms, such as the following: BEQUESTS, where Central Corydon Community Centre is the beneficiary in your Will; LIFE INSURANCE, where Central Corydon Community Centre is the beneficiary of a current policy or new policy purchased with Central Corydon Community Centre named as owner and beneficiary. PUBLICLY TRADED SECURITIES, with a donation of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and segregated funds (as part of an estate or gifted during a person's lifetime). late registrations

Full refunds will be issued when a program is cancelled. A $15.00 administration fee applies to all refund requests other than program cancellation. Withdrawl from a program will be pro-rated and the issuing of a refund will be based on individual request specifics. For sessions of eight weeks or more, no refund will be given after the third week of classes. program information Answers to questions regarding sports should be directed to the Manager of Sport Services, Lisa Peters at 489-9537 and questions regarding programs should be directed to the Manager of Program Services, Abbie Bajon at 452-9844. All Centre Staff will try to provide assistance with questions or concerns you have, so don't hesitate to call.

A late fee of $20.00 per registration will be charged effective September 15th. This is necessary due to the additional administration which occurs when registration is late. In some instances, teams have been formed, league fees paid and uniforms ordered. Our philosophy is such that anyone who wants to participate should be accommodated, but it must be recognized that there are extra costs incurred with late registrations and is not always possible.

Please register before the deadline to avoid late fees!!!!

Anyone living outside the official Central Corydon service area must register at their own community centre when sport league rules so dictate. When the sport or sport age group is not available at the home centre, written permission to transfer is required. This includes house league sports.

Sport Team Formations All teams at C4 are formed based on the number of registered players-if numbers warrant, 2 or 3 teams may be formed in one age group in certain sports. If teams are playing in the same division they will be as equally balanced as possible. If numbers are such that there are too many to be placed on one team but not enough for an additional team to be formed, then players will have to be transferred to the next community centre needing players. The method used to decide which players are to be transferred is: 1. 2. 3. 4.

hockey New for 2011-12 is of course the amalgamation of the three community centres of Crescentwood, River Heights & Sir John Franklin (Central Corydon Community Centre or C4). For the 1st time in our history we will all be playing hockey together from our neighborhood as we welcome the Crescentwood kids to the APHA. There will be some grandfathering allowed for older kids from Crescentwood who wish to continue playing with their friends in Fort Garry and more details will be available at fall registration in September. Also new for this season the hockey program will be utilizing a $100 volunteer bond per family of which details will also be available at registration.

The traveling program is "grass roots" hockey, where participation, fair play and competitiveness are always the goal. C4 shares the belief of equal playing time, playing in a respectful manner and having fun. Parents should also be respectful of the enormous amount of time and energy our coaches/ managers dedicate both on & off the ice to run a successful team. If you haven't volunteered in the past few years with a team please help out this year! Finally, as a retired AHL referee I would ask that everyone be mindful that the referees are young and developing and learning the game too. Without our current crop of returning referees we

As a reminder, for traveling hockey, it is our goal at C4 and within the APHA to have uniformity with respect to tryouts, team practices and ice schedules. The APHA has adopted the Hockey Handbook as a guide for ALL teams within the APHA to follow for players, coaches, managers and parents. The hockey handbook can be viewed on the APHA website www.aphamb.ca. Remember this is a reference guide, not gospel. For team formations, every effort is made to ensure C4 and all clubs in the APHA follow a fair and equitable process. Remember you must register to tryout. If you choose to play in another program after the number of teams in each category has been formed, we will only refund half your money. This reason is simple; once the number of teams has been formed we are committed to those numbers so any drop in players is catastrophic.

aaa or aa hockey

(age 5-6)

Central Corydon Community Centre runs an in-house league exclusively at River Heights. The number of players is restricted to manageable numbers (max of 12 players per team). Starting in early October, an initiation program of 8 sessions will be held to assist the players with some basic skills. The season consists of 18-20 indoor games. Teams will practice once and sometimes twice a week, typically outdoors. We do encourage our teams to participate outside the club in tournaments and exhibition games to prepare the players for traveling hockey and have the added experience of playing new teams. When we assign teams, our top priority is equal skill level. We TRY to keep friends together, but there is NO guarantee this can be done. We only adjust for balance, not because a player wants to be with their friends. It is also recommended that young skaters enroll in a Learn to Skate program. This league is noncompetitive and focuses on skill development and good sportsmanship.

apha house league

(age 7-8)

Central Corydon Community Centre participates in an area association house league with six other APHA (Assiniboine Park Hockey Association) community centres. Each of the community centres form teams based on their registration numbers. The season consists of 18-20 indoor games starting in November and winding up in February. Teams will play 1-2 games per week and will practice once or sometimes twice per week. The season finishes off with double knock out playoffs. The league is designed to focus on skill development and participation. Boys and girls are welcome. The registration fees include an 8 session Initiation Program for all participants. This program will be run over 3-4 weekends starting in early October prior to the start of the season. The program is geared towards kids of all skill levels.

Players trying for AAA or AA must also register for C4 hockey to prevent problems related to having a place to play if the player does not make the AAA or AA team. Your cheque will be returned or destroyed, as per your instructions, in the event of the players making the team. Players must be registered with Central Corydon prior to registering with the Rangers or the Monarchs. All Travelling team players must register at their home community centre. Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association rules regarding transfers will be strictly enforced. In the event of an APHA team formation involving two or more community centres, no transfers are required. For further information regarding AAA or AA hockey, visit the APHA website at www.aphamb.ca. Rangers registration will be held on Wednesday August 31st at the Roblin Park CC - TIME 7:00 - 9:00 pm.

Want to try out the sport before tryouts? Join us for 'Skate & Educate'

The APHA (Assiniboine Park Hockey Association) provides girls of all ages with a place to experience the great Canadian game of hockey. We have a competitive tiered program for all ages from Novice (8 and under) through Midget, including AA teams. APHA female teams are created on an area wide basis (our area includes Phoenix, Westdale, Roblin Park, Varsity View, and C4) and play out of one home rink that will be determined after tryouts, which are held near the end of September. All levels of skill are welcome - new female players of all ages take up this fun sport every year! New players are encouraged to also enroll in a learn to skate program, if skating skills need a little work. This year the novice girls will participate in the IP program (8 sessions of skills in October). Please note for the 2011/12 season, if your daughter does not wish to play A1 hockey, you have the option to declare A2 at the time of registration and we will automatically place her on the A2 team for her age category.

ringette What Is Ringette?

Who Plays Ringette?

Ringette is a fast-paced team sport played on ice with a ring, stick and full protective equipment. A game consists of two 20-minute periods, taking an hour to complete.

Try Ringette for free! A great way to see if Ringette is the sport for you is to attend a Come Try Ringette event. Dates at www.cometryringette.com

Originally invented to offer girls a team ice sport, Ringette has developed into a true Sport for Life, involving all participants of all ages and both genders. In Manitoba, Ringette is played from the age of 5 through to Senior Ladies and at all levels from House League to AA Elite Players who compete for national championships. There are also five university teams in Manitoba. While the majority of Ringette players are girls, boys are welcome up to age 12. Team Formation Players at any age group may be based at any community centre in our division, which is Assiniboine Park Fort Garry Ringette Association (APFG).

What Makes Ringette Unique? Ringette encourages the rapid development of skating skills, and demands that athletes apply concepts of teamwork and game strategy to succeed, in particular: Players must pass the ring over the blue line to a teammate every time - promoting the involvement of all players. Skill, speed and strategy are what score goals - intentional and aggressive body contact is forbidden. Success depends on how well you and your teammates work together as only three players may attack or defend around the net. Less crowding gives the skilled player space and reduces the risk of injury. Only the goaltender is allowed in the crease. Featuring a bigger crease, scoring demands real skill. At the advanced levels, a team has 30 seconds from the time they gain possession of the ring to take a shot on goal.

U10, U12, U14 (formerly Novice, Petite, Tween) will have about four evaluation skates in late September/early October and be placed on teams balanced based on likeness of skill level, pending information from the Winnipeg Ringette League, Manitoba Ringette Association and other associations. U16, U19 (formerly Junior, Belles) have the option of trying out for an "A" team.

circuit training boot camp

In the 1990's research on strength training for older adults was explored. Experts now recommend that older adults do strength training to maintain their strength, muscle mass and balance. Inactive adults have increased risk of disability, falls and diseases such as diabetes. Find out the benefits by joining this program that will help make you stronger using our exercise equipment and free weights. There are a few reasons that prevent older adults from taking part in strength training so all participants are requested to meet with their family physician to evaluate their readiness for this activity.

Bring your friends and enjoy military influenced training in a fun, high energy setting. Using the principle of set time training, this class will tone, strengthen and condition every muscle in your body. Included in this class will be individual, partner and group stations utilizing exercise balls, weights, step benches and more! A true and exciting full body workout! All fitness levels are welcome and modifications will be given for every workout. Please bring a water bottle.

Winter in Winnipeg...it's Wonderful!!!! Get some exercise and fresh air in one of our many outdoor rinks. Each site has 3 outdoor rinks which are open to the public during the day and evening. Perhaps you would like to come out in the evening and skate under the stars. River Heights' east and west rinks are used for hockey practices and drop-in skating. The pleasure rink is a no-stick, no puck policy and is located south of the East rink. Crescentwood has two outdoor rinks and one rink for all your skating pleasure. Sir John Franklin also has three rinks, one for hockey, one for shinny and one for pleasure skating. There is nothing like taking a run down a toboggan slide and Central Corydon has some of the best slides in the city. All three sites have toboggan slides with River Heights and Sir John Franklin having night lighting. Tobogganing offers good fun. When you need to warm up, head into our canteen for a cup of hot chocolate, coffee or cappuccino. There are also vending machines available for snacks and drinks. Washroom facilities are available inside our community centres.
