2 President’s Message February 2016 Corydon Community Centre (CCC) which comprises three sites (Crescentwood, Sir John Franklin, and River Heights) was amalgamated on April 1st, 2011. The Board and staff spent the first two years focusing on combining the three previous independent community centres into one organization which is now known as Corydon Community Centre Inc. CCC is currently the largest community centre in Winnipeg, serving a population area of over 34,000 people. We made the transition from a “working” board to a “governance” or “policy” board over the past 18 months as part of amalgamation. Our strategic planning process has been critical to this transition. This shift is to make sure that the Board works at a high level to set strategic direction for the future of the Centre and that we then support the staff and committees as they work to implement the various strategies. We rely on our very competent staff and the hundreds of volunteers to help make everything work. CCC Board and staff are committed to continuing to operate an efficient and effective centre offering programs and services that meet the needs of our incredible community. One of our most recent community events that took place January 27th – 31st was our annual Winter Carnival and the 25th Glen McLeod Hockey Tournament. These events do not occur without the support of our fabulous staff and volunteers. A special thanks to Frank Ferguson who was the Chair of the Carnival Committee along with Paul Krestanowich who organized the hockey tournament. They along with the many volunteers and our staff (Tara, Laura, Kathy, Scott, Wayne, Kyle, Jordan, Jeremy, Waz, Logan, Dave, Myles, Max, Chris, Ryan, Will, Mick, Glen, Andre, Erwin, Aaron, Kevin, Tyler, Liam and Abbie) put on a fun-filled family event for all to enjoy. These types of events allow us to create a sense of community. People truly enjoyed themselves throughout the week. Over the next four months we will be focusing on program and facility development as well as preparing for our Annual General Meeting on May 25th, 2016 at Sir John Franklin site. If you are interested in sitting on a committee, chairing a committee, being on our Executive or volunteering in general please let us know. We do have specific roles for those who are interested in volunteering. We look forward to your participation in our upcoming spring programs and events. Sincerely, Colleen G. Plumton President Corydon Community Centre

Corydon Community Centre hopes to be recognized as a community leader in sports and recreation. Our mission is to provide accessible recreational opportunities to promote well-being and a sense of community in the neighborhood. There are many children in our area who are restricted from participating in sport because of cost. So, we have started a fund to provide financial assistance for sports and programs that are not covered under our normal program subsidy, such as summer camps and ice draft. Please contact 204.488.7000 to donate or if you would like to learn more about this important initiative.

8 Donations The Corydon Community Centre has been part of the community for over 60 years. The Centre is partially funded by the City of Winnipeg. However, each year the Centre must rely on fundraising and donations in order to continue to meet the needs of our community.

Refunds

Registration fees can be paid by cash, debit, Visa or MasterCard. Registration can be done in person or by phone. Phone registrations are by Visa or MasterCard only and an email will be sent confirming your registration.

Full refunds will be issued when a program is cancelled.

Please leave a detailed message on 204.488.7000 ext. 210 and we will get back to you that same day. Please note: in person registrations will be dealt with first. Your patience is appreciated.

For sessions of eight weeks or more, no refund will be given after the third week of classes.

Registration is not complete until fees are paid and necessary forms are completed and submitted. Every child that wants to be in sport deserves to be in a sport. Subsidies are available. Anyone who requires financial support, please call office for assistance.

Refunds will be prorated from the date the office receives and confirms notice of withdrawal.

Fees Activity Fees Each program or sport has a fee based on the actual costs of providing the program (. ie: league registration fees, equipment, uniforms, instruction, etc.) and has its own budget w . hich is predicated on a break-even formula. Fee details are listed in each programs description. Participation Fees This fee is levied for each activity per participant to contribute towards facility enhancements.

A $20.00 administration fee applies to all refund requests other than program cancellation.

To qualify for a refund, the office must be notified of the withdrawal prior to the end of the third week.

Late Registrations A late fee of $30.00 per family will be charged effective March 13th. This is necessary due to the additional administration which occurs when registration is late. In some instances, teams have been formed, league fees paid and uniforms ordered. Our philosophy is such that anyone who wants to participate should be accommodated, but it must be recognized that there are extra costs incurred with late registrations and is not always possible. Please register before the deadline to avoid late fees!!!! Anyone living outside the official Corydon service area must register at their own community centre when sport league rules so dictate. When the sport or sport age group is not available at the home centre, written permission to transfer is required. This includes house league sports. ALL PROGRAM FEES AND OFFERINGS AT CORYDON CC ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE

* Yearly fee must be paid in full at the Fall Registration and is valid from September 1st to August 31st of the following year, as it includes public skating (Friday and Sunday) for the season at the River Heights Site. ** Yearly senior fee must be paid in full at the Fall Registration and is valid from September 1st to August 31st of the following year, as it includes adult skating (Monday am and Wednesday pm) for the season at the River Heights Site.

Sport Team Formations

Volunteer Opportunities

All teams are formed based on the number of registered players-if numbers warrant, 2 or 3 teams may be formed in one age group in certain sports. If teams are playing in the same division they will be as equally balanced as possible. If numbers are such that there are too many to be placed on one team but not enough for an additional team to be formed, then players will have to be transferred to the next community centre needing players. The method used to decide which players are to be transferred is:

We are always looking for parent and community involvement. Please note that there are many ways to get involved in our sports and we welcome all those interested in any of the below to contact us.

1. Late registrations 2. Volunteers to transfer 3. Players from outside Corydon catchment 4. Lottery

* Any player registering late has no guarantee of a position on a Corydon CC Team.

• Coaches • Assistant Coaches • Team Managers • Team Safety/First Aid Person • Parent Communication Liaison • Sport Committee Representatives (Basketball, Baseball, Football, Soccer, Softball)

Thanks again for your continued involvement and commitment to sport and activity for youth. Here’s to a safe, successful 2016 season!

Uniform Deposits Basketball Baseball Football Softball

Baseball

Team Selection

Baseball (hardball) is for boys and girls ages 5-18. The baseball season runs from the beginning of May through June with games usually scheduled during weekday evenings. We offer developmental teams for children and youth who have not played before as well as more competitive teams for those who have. Baseball teams are travelling teams. Usually a team plays the same number of home and away games. Because of player numbers, some players may be asked to play for teams from other community centres. The playoff format has not yet been determined, but other than playoff teams, everyone finishes by the end of June.

Independent evaluators will be used. Teams will be formed and team practices will start in late April or early May. You will be contacted by a volunteer after registration with a specific time, date and location of your tryout/evaluation time. Rally Cap - tons of fun for the kids with emphasis on fun, basic skills and learning the game in a non-competitive environment. Rally Cap is a parent-run program so several volunteers are required. Rookies - play a more organized game of ball using a pitching machine. Games are 2-3 times per week against other community centres with an emphasis on team play, sportsmanship and continued skill mastery. Mosquito - is the first year when players start pitching and AA is introduced. All players attend tryouts and will be evaluated – those with higher skill will be asked to play AA ball – a higher and more competitive level. Peewee - A/AA remains at the community centre but at this age AAA is introduced (the highest level of ball at this age group is a regional team, comprised of the best players in all of Winnipeg South) Bantam/Midget - A/AA remain at the community centre with the Chiefs as the AAA regional team

Umpires Older players (13+) may want to consider umpiring. It’s fun and the pay is great! $25.00 - $40.00 per game Please contact the office for details of upcoming clinics.

AA Baseball If your child is selected for the AA team, please note that the time commitment and expectations are greater than in A-level baseball.

Equipment Players are required to provide their own gloves, batting helmets and baseball pants. Bats will be provided for all age groups except Midget. Midget players are encouraged to purchase their own wooden bats this year.

Late Registrations We try to have 12 -14 players per team and registration will be cut off at that point. Late registrations will not be accepted if there are not enough coaches. Late registrations, if accepted, will be subject to a $30 late fee over and above the registration fee.

Volunteer Opportunities As coaches and volunteers are needed for all teams, there will be a sign-up sheet at registration. Most teams will need a scorekeeper, pitch counter, manager, first aid person, equipment manager, someone to install the bases before each game, coaches, and if possible, someone who can umpire if the scheduled umpire cannot make it. All of these positions are volunteer positions. If we do not have volunteers to help out, the kids don’t play. Please keep in mind that we need volunteers when you register. Knowledge of baseball is not a pre-requisite to volunteering. All coaches are required to complete the Respect in Sport training from Sport Manitoba. It is free and on-line.

Baseball Committee: John Young, Jacques Gauthier – baseball@centralcorydoncc.com

AAA Baseball Any player wishing to play for the Winnipeg South Chiefs must register at Corydon before they will be allowed to attend tryouts. Details on tryouts can be found at www.ballcharts.com/ wschiefs

full Running on

story by dave champion-taylor

Jennie Baragar-Petrash is just 17 and only started running competitively at the end of grade 8 but clearly it’s a sport that fills her up heart and soul. “It’s sometimes difficult to explain why I love x-country running so much, I guess it’s just the feeling of freedom when running outside with all sorts of scenery around you,” she says. Running has given Jennie many memories already and she’s always on the run to make more. She’s preparing now to run for Team Canada at the Pan American Cross Country Championships March 5th in Venezuela. This fall she’s off to run indoor/outdoor track and x-country for the University of Arizona on a scholarship. Always running and always on full.

Jennie played rec soccer at Corydon CC (River Heights).

Jennie has run races in far-off places like China and Columbia.

What sports did you play at Corydon when you were younger? When I was younger I did a bit of gymnastics and and I have played soccer out of Corydon CC for many years. I enjoyed soccer the most because I loved being able to run around on the soccer field outdoors. My dad was my soccer coach for the past 6 years which I’ve loved. What made you try crosscountry running/track? I found out about cross country in grade 5 and I figured I might as well try it because I knew I loved running a lot in soccer games. I didn’t run track till grade 7. Where do you think you got your running talent from? I’m not sure where I got my running talent from, but my mom has certainly been an amazing motivator for me, always getting me excited to run in big competitions and to train hard but have fun doing it.

recent accomplishments

What gives you the drive to compete so hard? I think that having a positive attitude towards training and competitions and always staying motivated gives me the drive to compete. what are some short- and Long-term goals in cross-country and track? any bigger dreams? Some short term goals in this sport would be to stay fit, steadily improve my times, and just to enjoy the overall experience. Some longer term goals of mine would be to Make more Canadian teams (for both x-country and track) and to do well in the NCAA. The Olympics is a huge dream of mine, but I know I still have quite a ways to go to get there. What do you do to prepare for a race day? In preparing for race day I always eat pasta as my “pre-race dinner” the night before my race. Usually a few hours before I race I like to

outdoor track (canadian Youth) – ranked top five in canada in two events indoor track (canadian Youth) – ranked first in three events

stretch my legs and use my foam roller just to wake my legs up. While I’m doing that I listen to my playlist of what I consider to be “motivational songs” to get me focused and excited to race. any room for improvement in your running style? I feel like my running form has greatly improved over the years although it is still not perfect. My coach Scott Radley and I are working together on correcting my form. Runners can be umm... ‘different’, Any weird running quirks? I don’t think I have any weird running quirks... however when I line up on the start line I always start with my right foot in front behind the line. (I’m right handed so that seems opposite to normal).

What do you like to do when not running/ competing/training? When I’m not training or competing (usually later in the summers) I like to relax by either reading, or listening to music. I listen to music a lot. I also like just hanging out with my family and my friends especially at the lake and catch up on my piano. What song gets stuck in your head the most? Because I am such a musical person I listen to a lot of songs, so I tend to get songs stuck in my head quite easily. The one that gets stuck currently is Count Down by Beyoncé. Favourite movie snack? My favourite snack and drink is tea and popcorn. I LOVE popcorn!!

What other sports or activities do you enjoy? I enjoy swimming, hiking, cross country skiing and biking. I also really love singing, acting and playing piano.

Softball Softball is an excellent supplement to winter sport programming. Co-ed Learn to Play programs are offered for children ages 5-7, hosted out of one of southwest community centers, depending on registration numbers. Corydon offers softball programming for girls aged 8 to 18 are available (age allocations are set out below). The season begins the first week of May, ending with divisional playoffs at the end of June. Two games are played each week, with practice times established by individual coaches. In addition, there may also be an opportunity for tournaments over and above league games. Some age groups may be combined with other south west community clubs to form teams. Softball evaluations will be held at the University of Manitoba on the evenings of March 21st & 22nd, groups to be determined. All softball registration will be required to attend one of the evaluations to ensure team formations are balanced. For more information on any of the softball programs visit either WSWYA site at http://leaguelineup.com/welcome. asp?url=wswysa or Softball Manitoba at www.softball.mb.ca

Umpires Umpiring softball can be an enjoyable and financially rewarding for job for young boys and girls in the Community. Umpires are paid $35 - $40 per game, and may work several games per week. For more information, go to www.softball.mb.ca for clinic details.

Coaches Please consider volunteering as a coach/assistant or manager when registering your child (no experience necessary). Are you interested in coaching but don’t know where to start or what’s involved? Please contact any of the league executive or community club convenors for information. Coaching is a fun, and rewarding endeavor – and really doesn’t take that much work! The easiest way to get into it is to start thinking and talking about it NOW! There are resources available to mentor you into the game! Convenor: Leslie Delnea softball@centralcorydoncc.com

There is no photo taking permitted at our pre-teen dances. Anyone caught taking photos will be asked to leave. Please leave your cell phones/cameras at home! 32 Summer Camps Put some excitement, fun and adventure into every summer day! Corydon offers three distinct camp options - Specialty Camp, Sports Camp and Day Camp. All camps offer a chance to make new friends, enjoy the outdoors and have fun being a kid. Each week is packed with fun activities, field trips and special events to make unforgettable memories. All camp staff have certified CPR and First Aid training, are screened through the Child Abuse Registry and Criminal Records search and participate in a training period to ensure a safe, suitable environment for your child.

DAY Camp Our extraordinary camp runs for 9 week long sessions over the summer, beginning on July 4th and running until September 2nd. While your child is enrolled at our camp, he or she will enjoy a variety of games, crafts, sports, swimming, as well as field trips. All of these activities will fit into one of our nine weekly themes. Space is limited, so please register early to ensure your child’s spot.

Strength Training (55+) Experts recommend that older adults do strength training to maintain their strength, muscle mass and balance. Inactive adults have increased risk of disability, falls and diseases such as diabetes. Find out the benefits by joining this program that will help make you stronger using our exercise equipment and free weights.
