Corydon Community Centre is governed by a Volunteer Board of Directors. Each year at the Annual General Meeting, new Board Members are elected and returning members re-appointed. The Annual General Meeting is also when the Board reports to the Community on all matters pertaining to Corydon Community Centre. It is a time for questions and answers. It is an opportunity for the community to give direction to the Board and Centre Staff. The Annual General Meeting is your chance to give advice and provide ideas. Refreshments will be served. scholarship fund Corydon Community Centre hopes to be recognized as community leaders in sports and recreation. The vision of the Corydon Community Centre is to provide accessible recreational opportunities to promote well-being and a sense of community in the neighbourhood. There are many children who are restricted from participating in sport because of cost. We have started a fund to provide financial assistance for sports and programs, such as summer camps and ice draft that are not covered under our normal program subsidy. Please contact our main office if you would like to learn more about this important initiative.

president’s report I hope you will take the time to review all of the sports and programs that we have to offer inside of the Spring Connection of 2015 and consider enrolling in something new and challenging for you and/or your family. Our staff have worked hard over the years to really understand what our community wants in the way of sport and programming. They are constantly looking at new ways to meet the varied needs of the 34,000 residents in our catchment area. In addition to our wonderful staff that help us deliver on all of these programs we also rely on over 90,000 of volunteer hours to make this all work. Thank you to each person who has volunteered to help out. We could not deliver on the sports and programs without volunteer help. If you have not made the time to volunteer as of yet, please consider this a call to action. We need you. A fact that we openly discuss at the Annual General Meeting each year that I thought I would share in this issue of the connection is that Corydon Community Center receives about 11% of the revenue we need to run our facilities and deliver on all the sports and programs from the City of Winnipeg. The remaining 89% of revenue comes from our arena operations, hall rentals, bingo events, registration and participation fees. Over the past few years we have seen a reduction in some of our traditional sources of revenue while we see increasing expenses. We must find new ways to increase revenue or we put our facilities and quality of programming at jeopardy. We will be reaching out to our community individual residents and corporate residents to assist us with this challenge. Pat O'Connor President

donations Did you know Corydon Community Centre is a registered Charity? The Corydon Community Centre has been part of the community for over 60 years. The Centre is partially funded by the City of Winnipeg. However, each year the Centre must rely on fundraising and donations in order to continue to meet the needs of our community. If you are interested in making a donation to Corydon Community Centre please contact Abbie Bajon, Operations Manager, (204) 488-7000 or abajon@corydoncc.com. The Community Centre will also accept gifts on behalf of a loved one and of course as part of your own personal estate plan. Estate gifts, which can be of any amount, are received after a donor's lifetime. Support can take several forms, such as the following: BEQUESTS, where Corydon Community Centre is the beneficiary in your Will; LIFE INSURANCE, where Corydon Community Centre is the beneficiary of a current policy or new policy purchased with Corydon Community Centre named as owner and beneficiary. PUBLICLY TRADED SECURITIES, with a donation of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and segregated funds (as part of an estate or gifted during a person's lifetime). Volunteers working in the children's programs must complete Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Checks.

CHLDREN’S PROGRAMS The Corydon Community Centre offers many children's programs year round including our Kidz Klub after school program as well as in-service days and winter and spring break camps. All programs include a variety of crafts, games, sports, outdoor activities and some field trips. Volunteers are needed to help supervise and participate in the organized activities of the day. 4
We are always looking for parent and community involvement to help our sports teams. Where and when you volunteer depends on program requirements, your availability and your personal preferences. Phone registrations are by Visa or MasterCard only and an email will be sent confirming your registration. Please leave a detailed message on (204) 488-7000 ext. 210 and we will get back to you that same day. Please note: in person registrations will be dealt with first. Your patience is appreciated. Registration is not complete until fees are paid and necessary forms are completed and submitted. Every child that wants to be in a sport deserves to be in a sport. Anyone who requires financial support, please call office for assistance.
refunds Full refunds will be issued when a program is cancelled. A $20.00 administration fee applies to all refund requests other than program cancellation. For sessions of eight weeks or more, no refund will be given after the third week of classes. To qualify for a refund, the office must be notified of the withdrawal prior to the end of the third week. Refunds will be prorated from the date the office receives and confirms notice of withdrawal.
late registrations A late fee of $30.00 per family will be charged effective anytime after March 7th. This is necessary due to the additional administration which occurs when registration is late. In some instances, teams have been formed, league fees paid and uniforms ordered. Our philosophy is such that anyone who wants to participate should be accommodated, but it must be recognized that there are extra costs incurred with late registrations and is not always possible.
Please register by the deadline to avoid late fees!!!!
Anyone living outside the official Corydon service area must register at their own community centre when sport league rules so dictate. When the sport or sport age group is not available at the home centre, written permission to transfer is required. This includes house league sports.
ALL PROGRAM FEES AND OFFERINGS AT CORYDON CC ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE 6

sports softball
Please note the below policies that blanket all sports programs at Corydon Community Centre:
Sport Team Formations All teams are formed based on the number of registered players - if numbers warrant, 2 or 3 teams may be formed in one age group in certain sports. If teams are playing in the same division they will be as equally balanced as possible. If numbers are such that there are too many to be placed on one team but not enough for an additional team to be formed, then players will have to be transferred to the next community centre needing players. The method used to decide which players are to be transferred is: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Late Registrations Volunteers to transfer Players from outside Corydon catchment Lottery Any player registering late has no guarantee of a position on a Corydon CC Team.

Softball is an excellent supplement to winter sport programming. Co-ed Learn to Play programs are offered for children ages 5-7, hosted out of one of southwest community centers, depending on registration numbers. Corydon offers softball programming for girls aged 8 to 19 (age allocations are set out below). The season begins the first week of May, ending with divisional playoffs at the end of June. Two games are played each week, with practice times established by individual coaches. In addition, there may also be an opportunity for tournaments over and above league games. Some age groups may be combined with other south west community clubs to form teams at both the competitive "B" level and recreational "C" levels. "B" level tryouts will be held for squirt level and above, and will be held at the University of Manitoba on the evenings of March 23rd & 24th, groups to be determined. When registering, please advise whether or not your child will be trying out for the more competitive "B" level. For more information on any of the softball programs visit www.softball.mb.ca.

Umpires Umpiring softball can be an enjoyable and financially rewarding job for young boys and girls in the Community. Umpires are paid $35-40 per game and may work several games per week. For more information, go to www.softball.mb.ca for clinic details.
Coaches Please consider volunteering as a coach/assistant or manager when registering your child (no experience necessary). Are you interested in coaching - but don't know where to start? Or what's involved? Please contact any of the league executive or Community Club Convenors for information. Coaching is a fun, and rewarding endeavor - and really doesn’t take that much work! But the easiest way to get into it is to start thinking and talking about it NOW! There are resources available to mentor you into the game! Convenor: Leslie Delnea softball@corydoncc.com 7
baseball Baseball (hardball) is for boys and girls ages 5-18. The baseball season runs from the beginning of May through June with games usually scheduled during weekday evenings, and Sundays. Baseball has 2 levels: "A Ball" is less competitive with emphasis on fun, sportsmanship and skill building. Playoffs may continue into the first week of July. "AA Ball" is more competitive with more practices, likely weekend tournaments, and a greater expectation to participate and attend all practices and games. Playoffs may extend throughout July. Baseball teams are travelling teams. Usually a team plays the same number of home and away games. Because of player numbers, some players may be asked to play for teams from other community centres. Team Selection Warm-up sessions will be offered by Corydon CC. At this time independent evaluators will assess players’ ability and willingness to participate in AA. All Players are encouraged to attend these warm-up sessions whether they are interested in AA Baseball or not. Players/Families who have demonstrated AA ability will be asked if they wish to play AA and to commit to the time demands. Warm-up sessions will be held March 21st and April 11th at the University of Winnipeg Fieldhouse Mosquitos/Peewees 12:00-1:50pm Bantam 2:00-3:30pm Midget 3:30-5:00pm Independent evaluators will be used for team selection. Balanced teams will be formed and AA teams will be chosen. Practices will start in late April or early May. You will be contacted by a volunteer after registration with a specific time, date and location of your tryout/evaluation time. Volunteers are required for each team to coach, manage and generally help out - without volunteer coaches, teams cannot be fielded. If you are interested in coaching please let the Conveners or Centre staff know at registration or as soon as possible. Conveners are more than happy to discuss the coaching role with any and all potential coaches.
Rookies - play a more organized game of ball using a pitching machine. Games are 2-3 times per week against other community centres with an emphasis on team play, sportsmanship and continued skill mastery. Mosquito is the first year when players start pitching and AA is introduced. All players attend tryouts and will be evaluated those with higher skill will be asked to play AA ball - a higher and more competitive level. Peewee - A/AA remains at the community centre but at this age AAA is introduced (the highest level of ball at this age group is a regional team, comprised of the best players in all of Winnipeg South). Bantam/Midget - A/AA remain at the community centre with the Chiefs as the AAA regional team.
AAA Baseball Any player wishing to play for the Winnipeg South Chiefs must register at Corydon before they will be allowed to attend tryouts. Details on tryouts can be found at www.ballcharts.com/wschiefs.
Umpires Older players (13+) may want to consider umpiring. It's fun and the pay is great! Please contact the office for details of upcoming clinics.
Equipment Players are required to provide their own gloves, batting helmets and baseball pants. Bats will be provided for all age groups except Midget. Midget players are encouraged to purchase their own wooden bats.
Late Registrations We try to have 12 -14 players per team and registration will be cut off at that point. Late registrations will not be accepted if there are not enough coaches. Late registrations, if accepted, will be subject to a $30 Late Fee over and above the registration fee.
Volunteer Opportunities As coaches and volunteers are required for all teams, there will be a sign-up sheet at registration. Most teams will need a scorekeeper, pitch counter, manager, first aid person, equipment manager, someone to install the bases before each game, coaches, and if possible, someone who can umpire if the scheduled umpire cannot make it. All of these positions are volunteer positions. If we do not have volunteers to help out, the kids cannot play. Please keep in mind, when you register, that we need volunteers. Knowledge of baseball is not a pre-requisite to volunteering. All coaches are required to complete the Respect in Sport training from Sport Manitoba. It is free and on-line.
Baseball Committee: Jacques Gauthier / John Young

Rally Cap -tons of fun for the kids with emphasis on fun, basic skills and learning the game in a non-competitive environment. Rally Cap is a parent run program so several volunteers are required.

Experts recommend that older adults do strength training to maintain their strength, muscle mass and balance. Inactive adults have increased risk of disability, falls and diseases such as diabetes. Find out the benefits by joining this program that will help make you stronger using our exercise equipment and free weights. There are a few reasons that prevent older adults from taking part in strength training so all participants are requested to meet with their family physician to evaluate their readiness for this activity.
