Self-Inflicted Estate Planning

Blunders

Don’t make these same mistakes when preparing your assets for your family’s future.

Q:

I’ve tried to impress upon my parents the importance of preparing a will or trust for their life savings to avoid the need for courts or attorneys as well as family wars over who gets what. If they won’t listen to me, are there some short-form examples that estate attorneys provide to support my efforts in convincing my parents to plan before it’s too late?

By Kristen M. Jackson, Jackson Law P.A.

A:

Too many people try to save a penny by not hiring an attorney to assist in protecting their assets. Death too often inflicts horrifying anguish upon beneficiaries. Of the thousands of examples, the following are a few selfinflicted blunders that may assist in explaining the importance of estate planning. 1. A second marriage for both husband and wife, each with children from previous marriages. The couple combined all of their assets, including a home purchased by the husband during his first marriage. The husband died and his second wife died a month later. Result: The second wife’s Kristen M. Jackson is the founding partner of Jackson Law PA (407-363-9020). She is experienced in estate planning, real estate law, business and contract law. Her firm has earned an AV rating by MartindaleHubbell signifying the highest level of professional excellence as obtained through opinions from members of the bar and judiciary.

10

children got everything; the husband’s children got nothing. A divorced father designated his 2. minor child as beneficiary of his life insurance. At his death, a court-supervised guardianship was required to manage insurance benefits until the child turned 18. Result: Thousands of dollars lost from unnecessary legal fees. 3. A mother’s revocable trust left her estate to her three children. Unaware of his substance abuse problem, she named her oldest son as trustee. At death, she had $195,000 in the bank, which he withdrew, squandered on drugs and is now homeless. Result: The other two children got nothing. 4. Parents gave their daughter a new car for her 18th birthday. They titled the car jointly with their daughter, who caused an accident that killed two people. Result: The parents were sued for wrongful death and their life savings were severely decreased to pay for damages.

5. A retired engineer wrote his own will by copying legal text from his parents’ wills written 50 years earlier. Result: When he died, his wife owed hundreds of thousands of dollars in estate tax that could have been avoided entirely with proper trust planning. 6. A man divorced and remarried, living happily with his second wife for 20 years before his death. He had a $300,000 life insurance policy from his employer naming his first wife as beneficiary. It was never updated after his divorce. Result: His first wife received all life insurance money; the second wife got none. 7. To avoid probate, a widow deeded her condominium to her daughter. Two years later, the daughter died. Result: The deceased daughter’s son, as the rightful heir to his mother’s estate, filed probate, obtained title to the condominium and evicted his grandmother. Don’t impact your family with self-inflicted blunders. See an estate planning attorney today.

Cutest Pet Contest

Photos by Joe Brooks Photography

This year’s contest was one of our best yet, with more than 40,000 votes cast for Central Florida’s cutest pet. Now, it’s time to get to know the top three winners!

1st Place: Jack Breed: Bernese Mountain Dog Pet parents: Cody & Alexis Suarez Community: Winter Garden What are some of Jack’s favorite things? Jack’s favorite things include being a 100-pound lap dog. In his spare time, Jack enjoys going to the dog park and hanging out with all of his friends. Jack’s all-time favorite things usually include anything that is edible. He enjoys being a brother to our golden retriever and lives to make sure that only he receives all the attention and love in the house. (Poor Hank.) How did you and Jack meet? My old college roommate knew I was interested in a Bernese Mountain Dog, so when she came across one, she texted me. My husband and I went to look at him just to see him and learn more about the breed, and the rest was history. We had no intention of getting another dog at that point, but it was love at first sight. What is Jack’s story? Jack is the happiest dog I know despite almost losing his life near his 1st birthday. Jack had a reaction or illness that specialists still can’t explain even after being hospitalized for a week and having almost every test imaginable. They initially told me he probably had cancer and was going to die. His lymph nodes in his neck were so swollen that he could not breathe and they were going to have to perform a life-saving tracheotomy. They finally gave him steroids after a week of suffering and he miraculously recovered. They don’t know what happened to Jack or if it will happen again. We cherish every day we have with him, and he’s still the happiest dog I know even after having gone though that experience. Fun Fact! Jack is a mountain dog who loves living in Central Florida even though he still can’t swim.

2nd Place: Dos Equis Breed: Chihuahua Pet parents: Jan and Rob Napierkowski Community: Longwood What are some of Dos Equis’ favorite things? Dos Equis loves running around the yard with his fur sisters and brothers, lounging by the pool getting a sun tan, meeting new people, snuggles with his mama, and treats are always his absolute favorite. How did you and Dos Equis meet? We met at Polk County Animal Control when I arrived to pick him up. What is Dos Equis’ story? Dos Equis was left at animal control by his previous family because he was “too old” (13 years old). The rescue I foster for (Florida Little Dog Rescue) was asked to please take him in as he wasn’t doing well in the shelter environment. We jumped at the chance to foster him (senior dogs are our favorite) and quickly fell head over heels in love with him. Once he was cleared for adoption, we realized that we couldn’t let him go, as he had wiggled his way into our heart and home with his crooked smile and spunky personality. We foster failed! Dos Equis is now 16 years old and has more energy than most of the younger dogs that we foster. With his easygoing, loving personality he teaches our new fosters how to trust humans again. Fun Fact! Dos Equis was featured on the first ever Dog Bowl hosted by Jill Rappaport on Animal Planet, along with his sister Martini, in 2017. He would love to spread the word on just how awesome senior rescue animals are.

Central Florida Lifestyle | August 2019

3rd Place: Hattie Mae Breed: Chinese Crested Pet parents: Melanie Lokey Rollman and Mark Rollman Community: Conway What are some of Hattie’s favorite things? Playing with her Bambino sister Scarlett No’Haira, and playing fetch 5,482,554 times every day! How did you and Hattie meet? Through Lil Rascals Rescue What is Hattie’s story? Hattie was an owner surrender from Georgia. She was part of a transport from Georgia to the rescue here in Central Florida. My vet, knowing how I love all the “naked” animals, called and asked if I would be interested in meeting her. I agreed to foster her, but within 10 seconds of meeting her and looking into those eyes, I knew she would be part of my home and my heart forever.

A Window to the Rest of Your Body

A person’s mouth is an important line of defense against a number of ailments. Not only can bacteria in the mouth cause infection that leads to periodontitis, but it can also cause problems in the rest of the body, including diabetes, heart disease and gastrointestinal illnesses, if left untreated. Additional issues arise when teeth that have broken down prevent individuals from eating a healthy diet because they’re unable to chew. “Dentistry isn’t just about keeping your smile beautiful,” Dr. Cuong T. Phan of Phan-tastic Smiles says. “It’s also

about the overall health. The link between your mouth and the rest of your body is one that shouldn’t be ignored as we age.” In fact, a May 2019 article published in the Journal of the American Heart Association by a group of Finnish researchers revealed that 84% of patients in a test group who were treated for ischemic stroke had blood clots that contained bacterial DNA. Among those, 59% had a strain of streptococci that is common in the mouth and causes infection when it enters the bloodstream. While more research is being done, it’s a start in showing the benefits of regular dental visits.

Phan-tastic Smiles

provides all phases of dentistry in-house for adults and children, including: • Full-Mouth Restoration • Implants & Dentures • One-Visit Crowns & Veneers • Zoom! Whitening • Laser Gum Treatment • Cleanings & Routine Exams

Boost Your Confidence

A good first impression lays the foundation for positive, long-lasting relationships, and your smile is just as important as a firm handshake or a professional outfit choice in the exchange. When you can smile confidently, that poise and self-assurance will ultimately impress the person you’re meeting. While missing teeth and receding gums can occur over time, Dr. Phan offers many cosmetic and restorative dental procedures in-house and in one visit, saving patients valuable time. The desired results will not only boost your confidence but change your outlook on life. “There’s no reason for patients to feel ashamed about the condition of their teeth. Nature is going to take its course,” Dr. Phan says. “I believe your health is an investment and everyone deserves to be healthy and happy. My team and I are here to help you restore your beautiful smile.” Dr. Phan and his friendly team will help you stay on track with your oral health and keep your teeth looking as young as you feel.

ging is something to be celebrated! The saying, “you are as young as you feel” is definitely true when you think about your smile. Aging gracefully can mean repairing or restoring the parts of your body that have worn down after many years. We maintain many things — our homes, our cars and our bodies. Why not our smiles? Benefits of cosmetic and restorative dental procedures include enhanced function of chewing, self-esteem and body self-image. Studies have shown that patients enjoy genuine improvements in body image, overall health and have shown greater satisfaction with one’s position in life.

The Fall/Winter

Color Report

These colors are expected to take over the fashion world in this upcoming season.

Vanilla Custard Description: “Vanilla Custard is an understated, smooth and creamy white.” Try it: Consider opting for a dress in this shade and accessorizing with a bolder color from the fall/ winter palette, such as the deep, adventurous Biking Red or Fruit Dove, a pretty and powerful pink.

By Lyndsay Fogarty

B

ased on the runways of New York Fashion Week, Pantone Color Institute, a leader in color strategies and forecasting, has put together a report of what we’ll be seeing out of designer collections this fall and winter. A mix of confident, strong and sophisticated, the wide range of colors are relatable and easily individualized. “Colors for Autumn/Winter 2019/2020 range from easy and sophisticated to strikingly different and unique,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. “This palette of versatile hues builds a sense of empowerment and confidence, enabling the wearer to choose the colors that best reflect his or her mood and persona.” The core, classic shades for the season, which are noted below, can stand on their own or act as a solid foundation for bold color contrasts. Here are some ideas for integrating them into your wardrobe along with complementary colors from the Autumn/Winter 2019/2020 palette.

Evening Blue Description: “Confident and classic, a deep blue symbolic of the evening sky.” Try it: Make this hue the star of your outfit by going for a smart suit in Evening Blue with a Vanilla Custard shirt underneath. Add a pop of color by accessorizing with pumps or a handbag in Crème de Pêche, a soft peach shade in the autumn/fall palette.

Paloma Description: “An unpretentious, yet at the same time elegant gray, Paloma endures.” Try it: Grays are perfect for boots, handbags and even nail polish during the fall and winter months. This season, Paloma provides the ultimate base for a stellar outfit because it plays nice with a variety of accent colors. Our favorite way to wear it is as a skirt or pants with a blouse in Dark Cheddar, a daring blend of yellow and orange.

Guacamole Description: “A tasteful, nutrientenriched green, Guacamole establishes a refreshing foundation.” Try it: Easily the most noticeable of the fall/winter classics, make Guacamole the statement piece in your ensemble by choosing a dress in this shade. Go for more neutral tones, such as camel or nude, for your accessories. 16

Tips for a Healthy Lunch

Fuel your kids for a day of learning by packing a healthy lunch that they’ll love to eat. By Mary Ann O’Dell, MS, RDN, Chamberlin’s Natural Foods

W

hen school is in session, it’s more important than ever to prep those lunchboxes with healthy food. Need some ideas? Here are some tips for packing a healthy lunch. 1. Focus on “healthy” but keep it familiar. Be sure to include a mix of protein and complex carbohydrates for lunch to help fuel the rest of their day. Protein foods include nut butter (or alternative), nuts and seeds, beans, meats and meat alternatives, dairy and hard boiled eggs. Complex carbohydrates include fresh fruits and veggies, whole or sprouted grain crackers, bread, grains and pasta. Consider combos such as bell peppers, cucumber, baked pita chips and hummus; carrot sticks and cheese sticks; apple slices and nut/ seed butter; rice balls with edamame; fresh veggies and yogurt-based ranch dip. Pay attention to the foods your child likes to eat and include them in the lunch, limiting sugary foods and sweets. 18

Central Florida Lifestyle | August 2019

2. Try adding one new food a week into the mix. If your child has never had kiwifruit, slice it and include with strawberries and/or green grapes. Include a different type of cheese on half of a sandwich. Try cauliflower pretzels instead of regular pretzels. This may not always work, but it’s a fun way to introduce some new foods. It also allows for conversation later in the day when you ask what they thought of their lunch. 3. Make it fun. Cut sandwiches, cheeses and meats into fun shapes using cookie cutters. Serve pinwheels instead of sandwiches, putting sandwich toppings on a tortilla, rolling it up and slicing it into pinwheels. Include some fun stickers or a note in their lunchbox. 4. Keep it clean. Cut out the plastic bags so commonly used by utilizing biodegradable sandwich bags. Find a bento box or utilize smaller, reusable containers inside the lunchbox to give a bento box feel.

Turkey Cheddar Apple Pinwheels Courtesy of Two Peas and Their Pod Blog Ditch the same old sandwich and make lunchtime fun with this pinwheel recipe. It includes protein, whole grains, leafy greens and fruit, covering all of the main elements of a well-balanced lunch, and it tastes good, too.

Ingredients:

• 1 10-inch whole wheat tortilla • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard or mustard of your choice • 4 deli slices turkey • 4 slices cheddar cheese • 1/2 cup spinach leaves • 1/2 large apple cut into 2-inch matchstick pieces

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Slice the loaf of bread and then cut each slice in half. Place the bread in the oven for about five minutes, which is just long enough to lightly toast them. Fry the bacon on the stove and then cut it into about four pieces per strip. Tear the lettuce leaves into smaller pieces, about the same size as your bread pieces, if needed. Spread mayonnaise on each piece of bread. Stack your BLT in this order: bread, bacon, lettuce and tomato. Put a toothpick through the stack, and either place in cooler or on ice immediately. SoYou’re Hav-an-a Party? Take these tips from our recent Havana Nights party and apply them to your own theme for a get-together that everyone will be talking about. By Andrea St. Onge and Cristina Lima, Lou and Pepper Party Shop

Choose Useful, Big Impact Items

For the outdoor area, the focus was on the quintessential Cuban cocktail, the Mojito. An elaborate, make-your-own Mojito station combined function with flair. As the focal point of the space, it allowed guests to gather and interact while preparing their cocktails. In this case, we used existing furniture, but a bar cart would be an equally stunning option. We kept the décor clean and authentic here — white conveys an airy, chic feeling while palm leaves and bright colors keep it lively. Burlap and paper runners simply convey the rustic theme.

Balloons and More Balloons

Balloons are a great way to convey color scheme. They take up space and make a big impression without breaking the bank. The combination of neon colors, shades of green and chrome gold transported guests to the tropics while keeping the balloon garland interesting and adding dimension. We added mylar palm leaves, faux palm leaves and gold to reinforce the theme.

Create an Entrance

We always add decor at the entrance of a venue. It’s the first thing guests see, and that’s where the experience begins. This photo backdrop was placed at the entrance of the party. Since a first impression sets the tone, we wanted to make sure it greeted guests with big, vibrant colors. We used fedoras, in keeping with the theme, as a subtle way to make it interesting when it wasn’t in use.

It’s All in the Details

For us, the party is in the details. Our planning process always begins

20

Central Florida Lifestyle | August 2019

with small details as inspiration. We take elements that highlight the theme and create a bigger picture from there. Here, we chose items that speak to Cuban culture — coffee beans, palm leaves, cigar boxes — that clearly translate the Havana Nights theme. We grew those ideas by combining them with complementary colors and creating bigger impact items, working with core details first to keep all the décor cohesive.

An Experience You’ll Admire Have you ever wondered what life is like at Bella Collina? From the 19,000 acres of rare rolling hills, sparkling lakes, and a signature Sir Nick Faldo golf course, to name a few, there is so much to love about this top golf community near Orlando. Bella Collina is a place to build lasting memories in the new era of country club living. To get you started, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite ‘must-do’ Bella Collina experiences. Even though it was a challenge to get it down to only 10, we think this will give you a taste of the luxury lifestyle you can expect at Bella Collina. 1. Couples Massage at The Spa — There’s nothing better than luxuriating in a lush couple’s massage amidst the privacy and beauty of the scenic countryside. Let the stresses of your day melt away as you sip champagne and eat chocolate-dipped strawberries from the luxury of copper soaking tubs. This is what the good life feels like.

6. Socialize at the Clubhouse — At the heart of Bella Collina you’ll find the impressive 75,000-sq.-ft. grand Bella Collina Clubhouse. This intricately-designed complex is complete with fountains, cobblestone streets, stone statues and more—making it the perfect place to meet up with friends.

2. Play the Signature #7 Hole — Bella Collina’s signature #7 hole is an uphill, lengthy par 3 that is both beautiful and challenging. The entire course, designed by legendary Sir Nick Faldo, is incredible of course—but make sure to take time to appreciate the subtle touches of this particular spot.

7. Choose Your Own Adventure — If you’re feeling ambitious, you could drop into a pilates or yoga class at the Sportivo fitness center. But we don’t blame you if you’d prefer to take a refreshing dip in the resort-style pool, lounge by the whirlpool spa or grab a drink at the cabana bar.

3. Stroll the Grounds — One of the most amazing features of Bella Collina is its ability to transport you to a different time and place. Where else can you experience actual rolling hills right here in Central Florida? Take a leisurely afternoon to walk around the picturesque grounds and admire the Tuscan-style architecture. It is absolutely breathtaking.

8. Date Night at Cucina — Make it a date night to remember without ever leaving the community. This members-only restaurant offers guests an upscale culinary experience, including fresh seafood, steaks, small bites and craft cocktails. Make sure to visit the wine cellar and humidor after dinner for a special treat.

4. Tennis Match on the Har-Tru Court — Meet up with a friend for a rousing tennis game on one of Bella Collina’s six Har-Tru courts. These pristine courts are set against awe-inspiring scenery, elevating a typical game to something truly memorable. 5. Lunch at the 19th Hole Restaurant — After an exhilarating game of tennis, grab a bite to eat at the 19th Hole. Here, renowned chefs bring their culinary creations to life with a selection of fresh, seasonal dishes. While you’re here, why not pair your meal with a glass of wine chosen from their expertly-curated selection? You deserve it. 22

Central Florida Lifestyle | August 2019

9. Bike the Scenic Trails — Bella Collina puts nature on display in this paradise-like setting featuring ancient live oaks and slender Italian cypress trees. Hop on your bike for a relaxing ride through the meandering trails, winding up and down the hillside. Getting in a good workout while enjoying unbeatable views is the perfect way to end a hectic day. 10. Picnic by Private Lake Siena — Grab some wine and cheese and head over to the private, 350-acre spring-fed lake in the center of the community. This picturesque setting is the kind of place where memories are made.

Come ‘Home’ to Bella Collina After experiencing everything this luxury community has to offer—from gorgeous architecture, impeccable grounds and unparalleled amenities—you may be thinking “If only every day could be so perfect.” At Bella Collina, it can be. The Clear Way to a Confident Smile Find out if a clear aligner treatment plan is right for you.

A

beautiful smile can help you feel more confident, and there's nothing that Dr. Jason Battle of Premiere Orthodontics loves more than helping boost the confidence of his patients through every stage of their lives. From school photos to graduation day, he has it covered. Dr. Battle partners with his patients to create their perfect smile. At his cosmetically driven practice, he customizes each treatment plan based on the patient’s individual needs to straighten their teeth quickly and affordably without anyone noticing. After learning about their treatment goals, Dr. Battle develops a plan using clear aligners like Invisalign, 3M and ClearCorrect with minimal assistance from traditional braces. With a simple, one-minute scan using the world’s fastest scanner, Dr. Battle creates digital models of a patient’s teeth. He then alters the models on a computer to design their new smile. The final digital production allows the patient to see the outcome before the treatment plan even begins. After the digital models are approved, they are sent to a lab so the clear aligners can be fabricated. “It’s a better fit for all of the retainers and appliances,” Dr. Battle says of the scanner. “It also has a faster turnaround time, which means the patient can start the treatment sooner.” 24

Central Florida Lifestyle | August 2019

With the traditional method for the clear aligner treatment plan, the aligners are changed out every two to three weeks. Using the accelerated method, the total treatment time is cut in half. Even complex surgical cases involving major under bites and over bites can be handled with the same treatment plan as more simple orthodontics cases. “In the past, patients would often need around two years of traditional ‘metal’ braces. We’ve cut that down to about three months, and that’s if they are even necessary,” Dr. Battle explains. Even better, patients don’t need to visit the office as much for maintenance. However, they still need to schedule regular in-office appointments or virtual consultations so Dr. Battle can check their progress and transition them through each stage of the treatment. This should occur every four to six months compared to every six to 10 weeks with traditional braces. “My patients can reach their smile goals faster with the accelerated treatment plan, and I’m there for them every step of the way,” Dr. Battle says. “I’ll do whatever it takes to get them to happiness.” One thing is clear: Dr. Battle is committed to creating beautiful smiles for his patients quickly, boosting their confidence for the milestones that matter most.

What's New at Premiere Orthodontics Dr. Battle understands that life can get busy and office visits aren't always easy to schedule. That's why he now offers HIPPA-compliant virtual consultations instead. It's simple. 1. Use your cell phone to text six photos of your teeth. Sample photos are available on the Premiere Orthodontics website. 2. Include your name, email address, concerns for your teeth and a photo of your dental insurance card if you need to verify information. 3. Dr. Battle will review and follow up with you.

Help Them Cope on

CAMPUS Leaving home for college can be difficult for both students and parents. Two local experts provide tips for dealing with anxiety, stress and depression related to this milestone.

A

ugust marks a new beginning for firstyear college students and their parents, especially if they’re moving away to other states or cities and out of the comfort of home. With these new beginnings come new challenges. Anxiety is the No. 1 cause for concern at college counseling ser-

vices, the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors found in a 2018 survey. For some first-year college students, being away from home can be exciting but overwhelming. Balancing school, work, health and a social life can take a toll on their mental health. “College is a focal point of stress,” Dr. Andrew Pleener, a psychiatrist located in Windermere,

says. “It has been a very critical point in learning how to cope or not cope.”

Coping with Anxiety

As students leave the safety net of home, it’s important for them to understand how to handle the anxiety, pressure and stress that college brings. University of Central Florida’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) reported that from

2017 to 2018, 59% of students seeking help had anxiety concerns, followed by depression at 49% and stress at 31%. Some common signs of mild anxiety include sweaty palms, nervousness and feeling uncomfortable in social settings. Common stress symptoms include headaches, acne and trouble relaxing or falling asleep. Dr. Teresa Michaelson, the associate director of outreach and community intervention for CAPS, emphasizes the need for students to have a self-care plan to help minimize stress. “Make sure you are getting enough sleep, are eating regular and healthy meals, and drinking enough water,” she says. “All those things are incredibly helpful to minimize and decrease stress, including exercise,

which has shown to be a highly effective treatment for stress and depression.” In 2015, 30% of college students reported that stress and anxiety had negatively affected their academic performance, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. To Pleener, perception is key. It’s never the actual situation that is stressful, it’s the way somebody perceives it, he says. “If two people are taking a test and one person thinks, ‘It is just a

test. I will do the best I can.’ while the other person taking the same test thinks, ‘My whole life depends on this. What happens if I fail? What will my parents think?’ That person is going to have a stress response versus the first person,” Pleener explains. “So, it is the perception of things that make it stressful.” He encourages students to give their brain a break and a chance to reflect through meditation or exercise. This allows the brain to focus on one task at a time and push away the other stressors around a student. Michaelson also emphasizes that students should familiarize themselves with the types of mental health resources available at their college or university. At CAPS, currently enrolled UCF students can receive a confidential mental health

screening, counseling appointment, group therapy session and other services free of charge.

Recognize the Warning Signs

Parents are the first line of support for most students as they transition from high school to college. A simple phone call, video chat or text message can make a difference in your child’s day. However, parents should be aware of when change in behavior is a red flag in disguise. Some warning signs of a serious anxiety disorder include isolation, weight gain or loss, declining grades and insomnia. Although this type of behavior can be common for a college student, Pleener points out that the most important warning sign parents should look out for is the student’s loss of interest. “If you start to see that they don’t enjoy doing things, like they might enjoy socializing or playing sports, prefer to be alone or their perception of the world has changed — that it is actually a cruel place —

28

Central Florida Lifestyle | August 2019

that is a warning sign for underlying depression,” Pleener says. At this point, intervention or professional help is recommended. Encourage your child to meet with an on-campus or off-campus psychiatrist, therapist or other mental health professional to learn more about the resources and treatments available to them. If an anxiety disorder is left untreated, it can pave the way for depression and other serious mental disorders.

Coping with an Empty Nest

As a parent, you want to offer your child the best life possible and dream about the day they get to go to college. Just like this bittersweet transition can affect first-year stu-

dents, it can also affect parents. Empty-nest syndrome is not a clinical disorder, but it’s a theory that is emotionally challenging for parents who send their child off into adulthood. According to GoodTherapy, an online association of mental health professionals, feelings of loneliness, sadness and loss of purpose can take a toll on the parent’s quality of life. To cope with an empty nest, Pleener suggests engaging in personal relationships, hobbies and other meaningful activities. Keeping in mind the milestone your child has reached can also help change your perception. “This is going to be a more exciting chapter that is going to bring a lot of success in the family,” Pleener says. “The future is right there. It will lead to an exciting and meaningful life.” Similar to students, parents should also have a self-care plan to promote a healthy lifestyle and be aware of the warning signs to help reduce anxiety, stress or depression.

Orlando’s Food Scene is About to Get Magical

Del Frisco’s Filet Mignon and Crab Cake

E

very year, restaurants from Southwest Orlando to Winter Park and beyond offer a three-course menu for $35 during Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining. In 2019, foodies can feast from Aug. 23 to Sept. 30 at more than 120 restaurants, including 11 that are new to the list. There is something for everyone, including diners looking for vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. The benefits of Magical Dining are two-fold: restaurants can fill empty seats during a notoriously slow time of year and support community causes. For every meal served, $1 is donated to a local nonprofit. As of press time, the 2019 beneficiary had not been announced. “The expanding depth of options for diners this fall reflects Orlando’s thriving culinary scene found in all areas of our destination, from the tourism corridor and Restaurant Row to downtown Orlando, Winter Park and beyond,” Visit Orlando President/CEO George Aguel says. Here are some of the restaurants we’re looking most forward to this year.

1921 Mount Dora

This restaurant is a bit of a hike, but the menu sounds like it’s

worth the drive. A fusion of southern decadence and modern preparation, dishes like Nashville Hot Chicken Livers, Grilled Country Ribs and Grilled Shrimp & Pork Belly push the envelope in flavor and are sure to please.

Bites and Bubbles

New to Magical Dining, Bites & Bubbles is a downtown Orlando establishment that is described as “an American restaurant with a French kiss.” What we’re most excited about is the variety of dishes on its Magical Dining menu, which offer an equal mix of familiar and adventurous that appeal to diners of all types.

Boheme Restaurant

Located in the Grand Bohemian Hotel, this is a perfect Magical Dining spot to savor a meal before a show at the Dr. Phillips Center or Amway Center. The menu is filled with decadent seafood offerings as well as a good mix of entrees for the meat eaters.

Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse

In addition to consistently stel-

lar service and food quality, Del Frisco’s is one of the best bang-foryour-buck options that Magical Dining offers. The entrees alone have a price tag that’s higher than the prix-fixe menu pricing. Pro tip!: Spend those savings on the lobster macaroni and cheese side dish. You will not be sorry.

JALEO

Orlando foodies were happy to see the newest celebrity chef restaurant at Disney Springs on this year’s list. The bill can add up quickly when you dive into the traditional Spanish tapas and paella during a regular outing. The fact that you can try five in one Magical Dining sitting is quite magical.

The Capital Grille

Expect a traditional steakhouse meal from The Capital Grille, and for just over a week, you can pair it with another one of the restaurant’s most popular promotions. The Generous Pour, which runs through Sept. 1, pairs your meal with seven wines from California’s Jackson Family winemakers for just $28.

Skincare Tips

for Teens Face back to school head on with these important skin and healthy lifestyle tips.

By Dr. Michael Steppie, Associates in Dermatology

N

ow is the time of year for kids to trade pool floats for pencils and picnics for packed lunches. It’s also a time when my practice sees more skin conditions flare for young people. Here are some skincare tips for the school year ahead.

Check Your Products

Do your children have sensitive skin or a history of eczema? The dryness and itchiness that this type of skin irritation brings can be distracting during the school day. Look for the word “hypoallergenic” on all soaps, lotions and detergents that your kids use. This term means the product is free of irritating dyes, fragrances or substances that may cause an allergic reaction. Sometimes a stronger medication, such as a topi-

cal steroid, is needed, and allergy tests can determine triggers.

When It’s Not Eczema

Other skin conditions can present with itchy, flaky skin, just like eczema. If it’s a new rash or sudden appearance of itching then it’s likely a condition like contact dermatitis, a fungal infection or psoriasis. Some rashes and legions, such as molluscum and warts, are contagious due to their viral nature. Schedule an appointment with a dermatologist if over-the-counter treatments don’t clear your child’s rash to prevent worsening of symptoms.

How to Tame Acne

High school is tough enough with its self-confidence growing pains let alone the acne. It’s easy to be influenced by highly advertised skincare brands when treating acne, but there isn’t a one-size-fitsall remedy. When over-the-counter treatments aren’t effective, moderate to severe acne may require prescriptions from a dermatologist, such as retinoid cream or an antibiotic as well as acne treatments to prevent scarring. Also, use makeup products that include the term

“noncomedogenic,” which means it doesn’t clog pores, and adopt a healthy diet.

Don’t Forget the Sunscreen

Just because summer is coming to an end that doesn’t mean you should stop using sunscreen. Continue to apply sunscreen on your kids, and send them to school with a cap and a bottle of sunscreen to use at recess. Look for labels that read “broad spectrum” and that is an SPF of 30 or higher.

STI/STDs Affect the Skin

Raising awareness about sexually transmitted diseases and infections is important. Symptoms for the majority of them manifest on the skin. Did you know that half of all new STD cases occur in people ages 15 to 24? Also, 14 million people, including teens, become infected with human papillomavirus each year. When given on time, the HPV vaccine protects against six types of cancers long before an individual is ever exposed to the virus. This school year, keep your children’s skin healthy and know that there’s professional advice right around the corner.

2019 College Football

PREVIEW By Nick Moore

Nothing signals the end of summer quite like the beginning of college football. As Orlando’s Camping World Stadium prepares to host the 2019 College Football Kickoff between the Florida Gators and Miami Hurricanes, Central Florida Lifestyle previews the state’s most prolific programs and what you can expect from each this season.

FLORIDA GATORS – AP Ranking, #7 THE OUTLOOK:

Dan Mullen enters his second season in Gainesville having already raised the expectation level. Last season’s return to 10-win form, followed by the signing of a top 10 recruiting class and a top 10 preseason ranking has Gator fans anticipating one hell of an encore in 2019. Mullen will also benefit from the return of many of his highest-caliber offensive weapons from a season ago — perhaps no more notable than redshirt junior quarterback, Felipe Franks. As familiar as Franks is expected to be in year two under Mullen, he’ll be even more familiar with this season’s top receiving targets Van Jefferson, Josh Hammond and Trevon Grimes — all of which played a pivotal role in helping Franks’ development last season. As has been the case in recent years, the Gators will lean heavily on an experienced defense that boasts some of the nation’s top cornerbacks in C.J. Henderson and Marco Wilson. Joining them to fill the void left by last year’s defensive leader, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, is none other than Brad Stewart. Where have you heard that name before? It was Stewart’s game-clinching interception returned for a touchdown last year against LSU that provided the momentum needed to return some swagger back to the Swamp and the Gators back into the national spotlight.

40

Central Florida Lifestyle | August 2019

THE SCHEDULE:

Sat, August 24, #21 Miami (at Camping World Stadium - Orlando) Sat, September 7, UT Martin Sat, September 14, at Kentucky Sat, September 21, Tennessee Sat, September 28, Towson Sat, October 5, #14 Auburn Sat, October 12, at #4 LSU Sat, October 19, at South Carolina Sat, November 2, #3 Georgia (at TIAA Bank Field – Jacksonville) Sat, November 9, Vanderbilt Sat, November 16, at Missouri Sat, November 30, Florida State

THE PREDICTION:

8 wins, 4 losses — It seems almost unfathomable that a team returning as much talent as the Gators are to finish the 2019 regular season with one less win than last year. However, in at least two cases, the Gators must go on the road seeking revenge from teams who left Gainesville with victories last season. The SEC West rotation delivers an always difficult Auburn team at a time on the schedule that almost seems like a must-win if the Gators want to remain part of the National Championship conversation before entering the meat of their schedule with visits to Baton Rouge and Jacksonville.

UCF KNIGHTS – AP Ranking, #19 THE OUTLOOK:

For as much change as UCF has endured over their two-year run of undefeated regular seasons, with just a single loss overall, more changes are ahead for the Knights as they enter 2019. Quarterback Darriel Mack Jr. appeared to be the front runner to fill the void left from McKenzie Milton’s gruesome leg injury; however, a broken ankle of his own has once again turned the position into a giant question mark as the season draws closer. The quarterback job now figures to be a three-man race between senior Notre Dame transfer Brandon Wimbush, redshirt freshman and Jones High School graduate, Quadry Jones, and freshman, Dillon Gabriel. Whoever wins the starting quarterback job will certainly reap the benefits of the Knights returning many of their top play makers from the last few seasons. Running backs Adrian Killins Jr. and Greg McCrae, who combined for nearly 1,900 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns last season, look to carry the #UCFast tradition through a schedule that once again appears manageable. Junior wide receivers Gabriel Davis and Tre Nixon will once again be the main targets in the passing game, regardless of who is throwing it their direction. If the run of perfect regular season records were to be jeopardized by any area on the field, it will be along the defensive line. Head coach Josh Heupel exhausted much of his recruiting efforts focusing on that area, where attrition was the main contributor to the problem. Heupel

added three transfers and five incoming freshmen to replace the depletion.

THE SCHEDULE:

Thu, August 29, Florida A&M Sat, September 7, at Florida Atlantic Sat, September 14, Stanford Sat, September 21, at Pittsburgh Sat, September 28, UCONN Fri, October 4, at Cincinnati Sat, October 19, East Carolina Sat, October 26, at Temple Sat, November 2, Houston Sat, November 8, at Tulsa Sat, November 23, at Tulane Fri, November 29, South Florida

THE PREDICTION:

9 wins, 3 losses — Undefeated regular seasons are extremely difficult in college football. Much less, three consecutive. The odds of the Knights achieving that feat are almost incalculable, although the schedule once again makes it seem plausible. Stanford should provide the season’s first true test and even if the Knights are able to outduel the Pac-12 power, answering the bell the following week at Pittsburgh could become that much more difficult. Remaining the highest-ranked non-power five team will certainly be the expectation, but achieving that goal will prove to be much harder than the prior two seasons. www.CentralFloridaLifestyle.com

MIAMI HURRICANES – AP Ranking, #21

FLORIDA STATE – Unranked

THE OUTLOOK:

THE OUTLOOK:

No one around the state has experienced as much change in the eight-month off-season than the Miami Hurricanes. Just days removed from their egregious 35-3 loss to Wisconsin in the Pinstripe Bowl, former head coach Mark Richt decided retiring was easier than rebuilding his alma mater back to national prominence. News of his retirement not only shocked the entire college football landscape but set up for one of the more awkward replacement hires in history. Former Hurricanes defensive coordinator, Manny Diaz, who had taken the head coaching position at Temple just 18 days prior to Richt’s announcement, was hired back by Miami almost immediately. Diaz remained on staff through the Hurricanes bowl game and was technically only Temple’s head coach for a total of three days. Much like last season, the Hurricanes could find themselves in a quarterback battle right up to the first snap in Orlando. Sophomore N’Kosi Perry returns with the most experience, while Ohio State sophomore transfer, Tate Martell, could also win the starting job. With just a handful of upperclassmen at offensive skill positions, the Hurricanes’ lack of experience won’t be much different than their lack of experience on the sidelines. Defensively, the Hurricanes are loaded with experienced upperclassmen who will once again be relied upon heavily to keep them in close games while the offense continues to be a work in progress.

THE SCHEDULE:

Sat, August 24, #7 Florida (at Camping World Stadium - Orlando) Sat, September 7, at North Carolina Sat, September 14, Bethune-Cookman Sat, September 21, Central Michigan Sat, October 5, Virginia Tech Fri, October 11, Virginia Sat, October 19, Georgia Tech Sat, October 26, at Pittsburgh Sat, November 2, at Florida State Sat, November 9, Louisville Sat, November 23, at Florida International Sat, November 30, at Duke

THE PREDICTION:

8 wins, 4 losses — With just one ranked opponent on the schedule, Diaz and the Hurricanes could appear to be on the rebound from Richt quickly. Their performance on the road in the in-state rivalry games will set the tone for expectations going forward under the new regime. Holding serve in five consecutive home games from early September to late October will go a long way in determining what to expect down the stretch as the Hurricanes close the regular season with four of their final five games on the road.

Central Florida Lifestyle | August 2019

Willie Taggart enters his second season in Tallahassee on the proverbial hotseat. Last season’s abysmal outcome, albeit due to a plethora of issues, was downright embarrassing for a program with such national prowess. The issues along the offensive line were the main cause, but much of Florida State’s offseason was spent stockpiling able bodies to avoid the same thing from happening this season. Offensive coordinator Walt Bell and offensive line coach Greg Frey were relieved of their duties and replaced with Kendal Briles and Randy Clements. Quarterback Deondre Francois was finally dismissed from the team after Tallahassee Police were showing up at his door nearly as often as opposing defensive lineman were in his backfield last season. Sophomore James Blackman is expected to take over under center, with Wisconsin graduate transfer Alex Hornibrook as his backup. Last season’s leading rusher, junior Cam Akers, will lead a young group of talented running backs for the Seminoles while Tamorrion Terry, D.J. Matthews and Keith Gavin will lead the receiving corp. Defensively, the Seminoles will field a young group who comes with experience at nearly every position. Linebacker Dontavious Jackson and nickelback Hamsah Nasirildeen should anchor the center of a defense who will have to provide more pressure on opposing offenses than they were able to a season ago. With cornerbacks Stanford Samuels III and Akeem Dent on the outside, opposing quarterbacks may not find as many opportunities to break big plays as there were in 2018.

THE SCHEDULE:

THE PREDICTION:

7 wins, 5 losses – It may not be what the Seminoles are used to, but it should be an improvement none the less for Taggart and company. With just two opponents in the preseason top 20, the Seminoles should be able to take advantage of an extremely favorable home schedule and could factor in the ACC’s Atlantic Coast Division throughout much of the season. Getting the season off on the right foot against Boise State could have the Seminoles return to relevancy quicker than many are expecting.

Pet Care 101 Whether you currently have a pet or are looking to get one, here are some tips that will help you provide the best care. By Jessica Gilbreath and Hillary Fisher

Proper Dental Hygiene for Your Pet

Live a Long, Happy Life

Periodontal disease, while completely preventable, is the most common clinical condition in cats and dogs. It has the potential to destroy a pet’s teeth and gums and compromise their health. If your pet exhibits any of the following symptoms, the American Veterinary Medical Association recommends scheduling an appointment with your veterinarian to minimize the risk of possible infection from gingivitis.

Pets are part of the family, but their life spans are significantly shorter than ours. As part of a survey of veterinarians on the keys to pet health, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association identified the top five most important things pet owners can do to increase the longevity of their pet’s life. The order of importance may surprise you. 1. W EIGHT CONTROL: Pet obesity can be life threatening. Overweight pets are more likely to encounter medical conditions like diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, lung disorders, high blood pressure, immune dysfunction and cancerous tumors.

BAD BREATH: If your pet’s breath becomes particularly offensive, it’s a sign that periodontal disease has started. FREQUENT PAWING AT THE FACE OR MOUTH: If your pet starts to paw their face or rub their head on the floor or a wall, they may be experiencing dental discomfort. RELUCTANCE TO EAT HARD FOODS: If your pet stops chewing, drops food when eating, or whimpers or cries when eating, gingivitis may have already set in. RED, SWOLLEN GUMS AND BROWNISH TEETH: Lots of tartar and discoloration as well as red, bleeding gums, are signs of gingivitis. While brushing your pet’s teeth at home may help to slow tartar and gingivitis, it won’t stop dental problems from occurring. Get professional care when recommended.

Pamper Your Pet Everyone loves to be pampered, including your pets. Regular grooming and hygiene goes beyond nutrition and exercise. It will leave your furry friend looking and feeling great. Regular fur brushing promotes good health while removing dead hair, skin and dirt from your pet’s coat. This is also an excellent opportunity to examine your animal’s body for lumps, rashes, sores, dull and flaky skin, and fleas. These are warning signs that may warrant a trip to the vet.

2. D ENTAL HEALTH: Proper dental hygiene can prevent infection in pets. 3. R EGULAR EXAM AND CHECKUPS: Meeting regularly with a veterinarian can help find health problems before they become major. Staying up-to-date on vaccines is also important. 4. R EGULAR EXERCISE: Regular exercise will be enjoyable for your pet and will prevent obesity. 5. A PPROPRIATE FOOD FOR LIFE STAGE: A good quality food will help your pet maintain a healthy weight, oral hygiene and a healthy coat.

Commitment to Education

The West Orange Chamber of Commerce provides a variety of programs to further the education of local students and support schools throughout West Orange County. By Stina D’Uva, West Orange Chamber of Commerce

Schools for its commitment with several awards. The programs that truly stand out are Student of Achievement and Renown (SOAR); West Orange Program for Tomorrow’s Entrepreneurs (WOPTE), sponsored by Bright Future Electric, Walmart and June Engineering; and our scholarships for high school seniors to either University of Central Florida, Valencia College or Orange Technical College provided by the Dan Petro Foundation. The latter are provided in partnership with our foundation, the West Orange Foundation, and were all presented at the Education Awards program sponsored by Orlando Health at Ocoee High School. In addition to these programs, the chamber has advocated for the half penny sales tax to advance school renovations and the building of relief schools. West Orange Chamber S.O.A.R. Winners

The support doesn’t end there. We work with our local businesses to promote Teach In, held in November of every school year, by encouraging employees to speak to students about their selected careers — especially those in skilled labor. This year, we’re working with OCPS, CareerSource Central Florida, UCF and Valencia College to catalog all the programs and partnerships that have been created and made available to our students so they may embark on a career to fill the jobs of today and into the future. So much has happened in recent years to address the shortage of labor in key industries, and the chamber is helping to make sure our students, parents and employers are aware of them. We hope to also be able to identify other needs and develop programs to fill those needs. With all these programs and focus on students to prepare them as future earners, we know that West Orange County will continue to be the sought-after community in which to live and work.

A Message of

Hope

Southeastern Food Bank serves individuals in need, both in body and spirit, in our community and beyond. By Lyndsay Fogarty

T

wenty-seven years ago, Central Florida resident, Mark Anthony, started Southeastern Food Bank (then known as Bread of Life Fellowship) out of his garage. The whole idea started with a truckload of donated snacks. In 1989, a man drove up to Anthony’s lawn and garden store with a truck full of Entenmann’s snacks and asked him if he could give them to people. He loaded up his own truck and gave them away, piece by piece, on the streets of Winter Garden. That experience planted the seed for Anthony’s vision of serving those in need, both in body and in spirit, and the faith-based nonprofit soon began to flourish. Two years ago, it expanded into North Florida and hopes for an expansion into South Florida by next year.

How Does it Work?

In-kind donations are provided to Southeastern Food Bank locations through distributors, retailers and food drives. A group of volunteers then organizes the items, which are provided to nonprofit partners at no cost for individual distribution to disadvantaged families and individuals. The community comes together in two Florida locations — one in Ocoee and one in Quincy — to

50

Central Florida Lifestyle | August 2019

distribute over 2 million pounds of food to more than 75 nonprofits in 25 counties across the state through the food bank. This is all done for one purpose that comes directly from Mark 10:45, “ For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as ransom for many.”

How You Can Help

According to the Southeastern Food Bank website, approximately 3,227,600 Floridians are food insecure, including 833,000 seniors (one in seven) and 968,280 children (one in four under age 5). That is why their mission of “feeding the hungry and caring for those in need by sharing life’s necessities and a message of hope” is so important.

“We want to inform, inspire and involve like-minded people that want to support us in some way, either by volunteering, praying for us on a regular basis and/or financially,” Anthony says. On Sept. 21, Southeastern Food Bank’s annual fundraising dinner will be held at Wyndham Orlando Resort on International Drive. The evening will include a silent auction and a program about all of the milestones the organization has reached and continues to strive for in the coming years. Attendees will have the opportunity to pledge monetary donations and register to become a volunteer at future events. With the generosity and support of the community, Southeastern Food Bank can continue to serve our neighbors in need.

Apps That Parents Need to Know In a world of smartphones, where everything you need is literally at your fingertips, make sure you’re staying up to date on the latest apps that could be potentially harmful in the hands of your kids. By Lyndsay Fogarty

T

hese days, there is an app for everything. For the most part, this is convenient. Everything you need is in one easy-to-find place: your phone. But as developers continue to create apps that cater to convenience, more dangers are lurking on kids’ smart devices. It’s likely that your children already have a phone so you can reach them at all times and a tablet to keep them occupied, so it’s important that you monitor the apps they’re downloading, even the ones that seem harmless. Here are some popular apps that you may be using yourself but that could be harmful in the hands of kids.

Smartphone Secrecy

Apps likes Best Secret Folder and Secret Calculator look normal (they hide behind typical icons like a utilities folder and calculator, respectively) but they allow kids to safely guard photos, videos and notes that they don’t want their parents to see.

52

Central Florida Lifestyle | August 2019

Both require passwords and both include systems that document intruders by snapping a photo. Best Secret Folder includes an optional feature that, when activated, will make you think you have cracked the code by playing fake videos. Secret Calculator users can activate a feature that erases all data in the app when attempts to log in have failed five times.

Toxic Talks

It is all too easy to use messaging apps recklessly. Kik and WhatsApp are free texting apps that allow users to message people directly without using a phone number. Sure, you can talk to friends and family while getting around data plans, but strangers can reach out via these apps, too. Kids may also see them as a way to send inappropriate messages away from parents’ prying eyes.

Not the Norm

Dating apps are a great way for adults to meet new people, but in

the hands of teenagers, they can be harmful. Although some have age limits, it’s easy to create accounts using a different age and meet people who are much older that potentially don’t have the best of intentions. With MeetMe and Skout, users can connect with others based on their location, and they are encouraged to meet in person. On Bumble, a dating app that connects individuals with similar interests and requires the woman to reach out first, accounts are created using an individual’s Facebook account. This means that personal information that is set as private and is monitored by parents on Facebook is now available for strangers to see through Bumble. It’s more important than ever to be aware of what your kids and teenagers are doing on their smartphones and to stay in the know about the dangers that could be lurking.

“Early on, I made the decision to buy professional studio lighting,” he says. “At the time, I was working a minimum wage job and hadn’t really started making money on Instagram. I took the chance and hoped that I would have the opportunity to make it back through Instagram.” Do you think you have what it takes? Berry’s advice is to be consistent and stay honest with your viewers. “As relationships with brands start to become more important, it is crucial to remember what got you into social media in the first place,” he adds. “At the end of the day, your audience is the most important thing.”

etting paid to post on social media is a dream for many people. They envision unboxing oodles of free products, creating artistic and compelling content and garnering cash flow from their online activities. However, the reality is that only a select few have what it takes to make the cut. With nearly 85,000 followers on his Instagram account, Windermere resident Tommy Berry has turned his passion into a paycheck as an influencer using the @Tommys.Beauty handle. So how did he build a following, create a public personality and become an influencer? “Theater was my first experience with makeup,” he says. “Seeing how it could completely transform people was really mesmerizing, and I think that’s what sparked my initial interest. I started sharing pictures with friends who then encouraged me to post it on social media.” Authenticity and a genuine love of social media, combined with passion for the products he posts, are two of the reasons for his success. It’s also most likely the impetus for national brands like Loreal, Covergirl and Lancome wanting to work with him. “As a super social person, the idea of being able to work on content and share it with thousands of people is amazingly appealing,” Berry says. “I love to interact with people who have that same passion.” Commitment to quality and belief in himself sets Berry apart from other beauty bloggers.
