+ LETTER From the Publisher

Home Sweet Home Jane Austen said, “There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.” While we understand the importance of staying close to home these days, the truth is that it hasn’t always been comfortable. For many of us, our homes became our workplace. We changed our spaces on the fly to accommodate computers, paperwork and organizational systems. While making those changes, we also noticed walls that needed painting here and fixtures that needed updating there. We can’t be the only ones who experienced this, right? Ultimately, not only were we inspired to tackle the many home projects that our busy lives took priority over only months before but also to create an issue focused on the home. We wanted it to be an issue where real estate experts could share their knowledge about purchasing the perfect home and where we could share ideas for changing up your space. As you flip through the pages of this month’s issue, we hope you are inspired, too. And, if you choose to take on a project, share it with us on our website or our social media channels.

Highly Honored Dentist OF THE ACADEMY OF GENERAL DENTISTRY

4.9 STARS ON GOOGLE! Dr. Phan and staff were amazing and made me feel safe, calm and comfortable. The dental staff was dressed in full medical grade Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and double masked. Every precaution was taken in ensuring a safe and clean environment from allowing only one patient in the lobby at a time to thoroughly disinfecting every surface area between patients to requiring the use of hand sanitizer and a temperature check before being seen. The level of care and attentiveness exhibited by the entire staff was nothing short of exceptional. -Tina Le

Color Report

How to mix this season’s classic shades with a trendy color palette fit for any fashionista. By Christie Fogarty

T

he fashion industry is driven by trends, both unique and timeless. Earlier this year, The Pantone Color Institute released its Fashion Color Trend Report, highlighting the color trends that we’ll be seeing this fall and winter. This season’s color palette brings back the classics with a bit of flair and personality. “Offering a rich narrative, the color palette for Autumn/Winter 2020/2021 highlights our desire for versatile, timeless color. Reflecting a ‘less is more’ mindset that is becoming increasingly important to consumers prioritizing value and functionality, our color palette is stripped of excess,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Imbued with strength and personality, colors for Autumn/Winter 2020/2021 encourage our ongoing desire for unique self-expression through creative and unusual visual statements that stand out.” The mix of bold colors and classic shades offers a wide variety of options, whether you’re dressing up for a night on the town or heading into the office. Here are some of our favorites from the Fall/Winter 2020/2021 palette, along with some ideas on integrating these trends into your wardrobe.

Amberglow Description: “A radiant autumnal orange, Amberglow promotes self-confidence and creative selfexpression.” Try it: This bold shade offers a beautiful pop of color for any outfit. Paired with a neutral navy or a soft off-white color, such as this year’s Almond Oil, Amberglow will be the star of your outfit. Accessorize a neutral dress with an Amberglow handbag or pumps to bring a bit of personality to your everyday look.

Fired Brick Description: ”Strong and sturdy, Fired Brick adds gravitas.” Try It: A classic holiday hue, this color exudes elegance and style. A dress in Fired Brick, paired with a gold blazer or a sequined hand bag, is perfect for a formal office holiday party. You can also trade out the blazer for a black leather jacket to meet your girlfriends out on the town.

Sleet Description: “Highlighting our desire for longevity, Sleet is a timeless gray that is dependable, solid and everlasting.” Try It: Gray is the perfect neutral because it can go with almost anything while exuding a sense of timeless style. A pair of Sleet pants, combined with a shirt in this season’s Green Sheen or Magenta Purple, screams sophistication with a bit of fun.

Peach Nougat Description: “Nurturing Peach Nougat embraces with its inviting warmth.” Try It: Peach is a fantastic shade because it allows you to add some flair to your outfit without going over the top. Choose a loose-fitted blouse in this color and pair it with a Sleet pencil skirt for a smart office look that can transition to happy hour with the right accessories. 6

Go Pink for

Breast Cancer Awareness A virtual 5K brings us together in spirit on October 11, 2020.

A

dventHealth’s annual Pink on Parade 5K will take place during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is a popular, fun way to ramp up awareness of breast cancer, the importance of early detection, and support for those impacted by the second-most common form of cancer in American women.

This year, the march is still on.

This year, we are excited to connect with even more people throughout the United States. Join your friends, family and others nationwide and participate in the first-ever VIRTUAL Pink on Parade on October 11. Wear your favorite pink attire to run or walk your chosen course as we celebrate our brave community members who are battling breast cancer, survivors who have won their fight and those who shine on through their loved ones.

First, pick your time and place. Then race!

During a virtual race, you can walk or run anywhere, anytime! Be sure to start the race on the right foot by grabbing your start and finish line with the AdventHealth digital race packet and digital training guide. This event has much significance because many breast cancer patients associate the feeling of crossing the finish line at Pink on Parade 5K with ringing the bell — proclaiming they’re cancer free. Carmen, a 41-year-old breast cancer survivor, shared why this event means so much to her.

8

Central Florida Lifestyle | September 2020

“Once I decided on my team of doctors at AdventHealth, I had a plan and was thankful that my cancer was pretty treatable. With my faith, family and friends praying me through it, I did it! And now I’m on the other side of it. Through the process I learned about Pink on Parade. I was able to participate in a wellness program free of charge thanks to the monies raised at the event. As a patient and one who has benefited from these services, this event is very personal and important to me.” This event provides a feeling of renewal for many patients and their loved ones. Fundraising efforts include, but are not limited to, early detection screenings, research, wellness and lifestyle resources, and helpful survivorship education programs to support those impacted by breast cancer.

Ready. Set. Register. You can make a difference.

Together in spirit, let’s virtually unite to support community members throughout their breast cancer journey. Visit the Pink on Parade event page on Facebook for up-to-theminute updates and announcements and challenge your friends to participate using #PinkOnParade on social media. Running pink feels powerful no matter where you are, so sign up today to make a difference.

Retractable Screens with the Click of a Button

N

ew Horizons - Go Retractable! offers a guide to finding the right motorized screens, for privacy, sun protection and insect control that match your lifestyle and the style of your home. So you've decided on a retractable screen for your home. What's next?

There is a lot to consider when choosing the right fit for your home. The experts at New Horizons - Go Retractable will review your options within your outdoor space to help you make the right decision. "Patio screening has undergone vast improvements over the years," says Owner Chuck LaPeters. "There's more to choosing a screen than just picking one that encloses the opening. Now there are convenient, durable and attractive patio screens that retract when you're not using them."

Winter Park Showroom

Here are just a few things you will review during a consultation with LaPeters and his team. 1. Determine its use. Are you interested in a retractable screen simply to keep the bugs out? Do you also want extra shade or complete privacy? depending on your answer, certain types of screen mesh will be a better fit. Most screens protect from insects and offer some degree of shade; however, retractable insect screens are ideal for keeping bugs out while allowing you to enjoy the view and maximum ventilation. On the other hand, sun-blocking screens are darker, keeping your patio cool and shaded but will offer less of a breeze. 2. Choose aesthetic options that match your space. While a retractable screen should do its job of insect control and shade, it can also offer beauty and elegance to your outdoor space. There are a variety of options for style and materials. Look for a retractable screen that complements the appearance of your outdoor living areas. 3. Understand the maintenance and installation. Retractable screens don’t require much maintenance, though it's a good idea to wipe down and apply silicone spray to the side tracks every six months to keep them moving smoothly.

Live Big in a Tiny Home A guide to the cost advantages of tiny home living. By Margarie Taylor

T

he tiny house movement encompasses people from all walks of life: recent graduates saddled with student loan debt, retired couples who are looking to downsize, environmentally conscious individuals looking to leave a smaller carbon footprint, and those who would rather spend their money on life experiences than a mortgage payment. These are some of the cost advantages of tiny home living.

Financial Benefits

The cost savings can be one of the most appealing aspects of living in a tiny house. Fewer building materials, lower tax rates and improved energy consumption are some of the ways you will spend less with this lifestyle.

Materials and Labor

Building a tiny home requires fewer materials and less labor than a traditional home. You can benefit from this price reduction in one of two ways: enjoy the savings or opt for

12

Central Florida Lifestyle | September 2020

high-end finishes you couldn’t afford in a traditional home. It’s possible to save money by building it yourself if you have the time and knowledge to do so. The small size is often deceiving – tiny homes can take a long time to build, especially if you lack experience. However, tiny home building kits are available if you’re ready to take on the challenge.

Interest Payments

You can save thousands of dollars in interest by avoiding a traditional mortgage. Since tiny homes are relatively inexpensive, you can save up and pay cash. On the other hand, you could opt for a small loan, but some banks are hesitant to grant loans for tiny houses. They’re sometimes seen as risky investments because they don’t have great resale rates.

Taxes

Tax rates vary according to location. If you live in a state that collects personal property taxes, you’ll have to pay them annually on your tiny home, but they should be significantly less than the taxes on a traditional home. If it’s kept on a trailer on private land that you own, you might not have to pay any property taxes at all. Address any concerns and questions with a tax professional.

Energy Consumption

The reduced square footage in a tiny home, combined with the fact that they are fairly easy to move, makes them cheap to heat and cool. All you have to do is park it in the shade during the summertime and move it to an open area when the weather becomes cooler. Since appliances are relatively small in tiny homes, they don’t require much energy to power, which produces further savings. To save even more money, many tiny home owners opt for solar panels on their home, which reduces and sometimes eliminates the need for electrical power. While the panels are costly to install, they have the ability to save you a fortune further down the road.

Repair Costs

It’s much cheaper to repair a tiny home than a traditional home. For example, the cost to replace the flooring in a 350-square-foot home is significantly less than the cost of a floor replacement in a 2,500-square-foot home. While the decision to move into a tiny home isn’t one that should be taken lightly. It’s a choice that can both simplify and completely change your life in ways you never could’ve imagined.

The Power

of Pets Pet ownership can lead to a number of mental, social and physical benefits for people of all ages. By Christopher Bobo

P

ets aren’t for everyone, but chances are they can help just about anyone. Dogs are loyal companions and can be trained as therapy animals to assist with a variety of ailments and stress. Cats, rabbits and other household pets also provide emotional support. If you are on the fence about adopting a pet, these benefits could change your mind. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists the following health benefits of pet ownership. 1. Decreased blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels and feelings of loneliness 2. I ncreased opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities 3. I ncreased opportunities for socialization With that in mind, the American Kennel Club recently took a look at a number of studies to compile some of the benefits of pet ownership that make furry companions look like super heroes. Here’s what they found:

18

Central Florida Lifestyle | September 2020

Pets can help lower stress. While the idea of raising a dog or a cat sounds like more responsibility, multiple studies have shown that petting an animal can release oxytocin (the love hormone) and decrease cortisol (the stress hormone) in the brain. A similar effect is even had on dogs that are being petted. Pets can give their owner a healthier heart. Several studies suggest that people with pets have lower blood pressure including a 2003 report by the American Journal of Cardiology that claimed heart attack survivors who own pets are eight times more likely to live another year. Being exposed to pets at a young age can lead to fewer allergies. It is often thought that having a pet can increase a child’s risk for developing allergies, but a report by the Department of Pediatrics says otherwise. According to the department, children who were around dogs at home as newborns were less likely to have allergic dermatitis and wheezing by their third birthday.

Pets can make their owners feel less lonely. There’s no doubt about it — a pet needs its owner. Not just for love and cuddles, but also for food, water, walks and bathroom breaks. This reliance from the pet, as well as the attention attracted by the presence of a dog, gives owners fewer feelings of loneliness. A 1993 study published that dog owners reported less dissatisfaction with their social, physical and emotional states, while researchers at the University of British Columbia, Canada found that homesick college students benefitted from dog therapy. Pets motivate their owners to get active. Just like humans, pets need exercise to stay healthy. Not to mention, they need it to burn off energy. A 2011 study performed by researchers at Michigan State University found that 60 percent of dog owners met the recommended criteria for regular exercise, given they walked their pets on a regular basis. Not only did the dog owners get the added exercise from walking their pet, but the same group was more likely to engage in other forms physical activity too.

Brighten your pet’s life just as they brighten your own. Here are some things to avoid so you can keep them happy and healthy for years to come. 1. You should definitely keep your dog away from chocolate. But did you know that grapes, raisins, avocados, onions and garlic can also be toxic to man’s best friend? If you must give your pet a treat from the table, go for options that are better for their digestive system like cooked eggs or salmon, peanut butter, yogurt or plain air-popped popcorn. 2. Dogs can eat apples just like you, but make sure you prepare the treat properly for them by removing stems and seeds, which contain trace amounts of cyanide. 3. D oes your pup have an upset stomach? White or instant rice is easily digestible, more so than brown rice, and is the perfect bland meal to settle his or her tummy. 4. You may be tempted to give your pet an over-thecounter medication when they aren’t feeling well to get them back on their feet quickly, but the dosage for them isn’t the same as it is for you. Before you give your pet any OTC medication, be sure to first consult with your vet to make sure it’s OK. 5. Watch your pets in the garden as well as with household plants. Daffodil bulbs, holly berries, hyacinth bulbs, morning glory seeds and more are potentially toxic to both dogs and cats while entire day lily and Easter lily plants are toxic to cats.

+ WINE & Spirits

Drink Wine

Like an Expert

You know the five S’s for that initial taste of wine — see, smell, swirl, sip and savor — but read on to discover how to become a wine drinking pro. By Lyndsay Fogarty

W

hether you’re a seasoned wine drinker or are new to the grape game, there’s only one way to drink wine: like an expert. Matt Uva, a sommelier for Quantum Leap Winery near downtown Orlando, which is Florida’s only sustainable winery, shared with us how to do just that. Q: What mistakes do new wine makers make? A: The first one is really buying wine based on the label. There’s almost a rule of thumb that the cuter the label is, the worse the wine is. … There are brands out there that you can buy and over the course of the year that you’re drinking it, sometimes it’s from California, sometimes it’s from Washington, sometimes it’s from Spain, sometimes it’s from Chile. It doesn’t matter what they’re buying. They’re putting anything in the bottle, but they have you hooked because it’s a cute name. What you need to be

20

Central Florida Lifestyle | September 2020

looking at is where the wine is from. So on the bottle, there is a designation of place — in the business we call it an appellation — and that place will do as much for the flavor of the wine as the grape will. Q: What is the ideal temperature to drink wine? A: Here at the winery, our reds will come out at 55 or 56 degrees, so that is a slight chill. To replicate that if you don’t have a fancy wine refrigerator, basically, when you’re about to start cooking, throw your red wine in the refrigerator. Have a glass first, of course; you’re cooking. When you’re ready for dinner, a half an hour to 45 minutes later, that wine should be pretty close to the right temperature. Our whites we do about 10 degrees lower than that. Traditionally, Americans drink their whites too cold. So ideally you could take it out of the refrigerator as you start to cook, drink it

at dinner, and it would be closer to the right temperature. Q: What should you look for when choosing wine? A: First, right off the bat is to look for the alcohol content. You have natural sugars in the grape. Yeast will convert them into alcohol, so with most wines, ideally, the higher the alcohol content, the dryer the wine. The other is, as you find a style [you like] don’t keep buying the same brand. If you find, “Oh, I really like pinot noir,” start playing around with regions and then see if you can narrow in on regions you like better than others. Then look for different producers, and you’ll find that different producers have their own kind of signature style. Then, when you’ve tried the different producers, find one that you really like, see what else they make, and try those wines as well. It’ll get you outside the same grape all the time.

What to Know About Slip and Falls Find out what to do if you’re injured at a premise that’s open to the public to ensure your injuries are covered. By Michael B. Brehne, Law Offices of Michael B. Brehne, P.A

P

ersonal injury is a broad term that can be applied to a variety of circumstances, from auto accidents to pedestrian accidents to accidents that take place at a business or home. Knowing your rights in any circumstance goes a long way when making a personal injury claim with an insurance company. Last month, we talked about personal injury and negligence as related to auto accidents. Just as a driver is responsible for any damage or injuries incurred as a result of breaching their duty of care behind the wheel, the same analysis applies to the area of premises liability. The area of law for this subsection of personal injury is usually called “slip and falls” or “trip and falls.” These claims arise when a person or entity responsible for a building, home or store that is open to the public fails to keep that property safe and free of dangerous conditions. Dangerous conditions are those that can be apparent or hidden and cause injury to a person. For instance, the most common dangerous condition for a slip and fall is a wet or slippery floor. The most common dangerous condition for a trip and fall would be uneven pavement or flooring or a raised object on an otherwise flat surface. Also, it’s not uncommon for objects to fall from shelving in stores or for fixtures to become loose from ceilings or walls.

In any of those circumstances, landowners and those in charge of premises open to the public have a duty to inspect their property to make sure that it’s safe for all those who enter. When a dangerous condition exists, the landowner may be responsible for any injury that occurs to you. If you’re injured at a premise open to the public or where you have a right to be, it’s imperative that you report the incident to the landowner or business owner right away. In most instances, they will take your information and write an incident report. Make sure you get a copy of this report before you leave the premise. Also, never sign a blank report. In order to file a personal injury claim in Florida, it’s imperative that

you know what the cause of your fall was. Make sure you document the dangerous condition in writing or by photographs. Take photographs of the scene, the conditions existing at the time, such as a wet or dirty floor, packages left in a walkway, light bulbs out, etc., and if apparent, photograph your injuries. If your injuries are significant, seek immediate medical attention. When you’re injured because somebody else failed to ensure the safety of their property when they had the duty to do so, it’s important to consult with an attorney who concentrates their practice on personal injury litigation. Their expertise can help you build the right strategy for your medical and financial recovery.

Michael Brehne has dedicated his 24-year career to representing injured people in motorcycle and car accidents, and represents people when their insurance claims have been denied. He has earned a reputation as a tenacious and skilled trial lawyer when representing his clients against large corporate defendants and insurance companies. He is also the author of “Watching Out for Florida Motorcyclists: Legal Rights of Injured Bikers.”

What's New at Wine Bar George With a handful of tasty new menu additions, a stop at Wine Bar George is in order.

By Lyndsay Fogarty

S

ince its opening at Disney Springs just over two years ago, Wine Bar George has become one of the top spots for dinner and a drink at the popular entertainment complex. With each visit, guests can expect familiar favorites as well as a selection of new items. While known for an impressive wine list, curated by owner and master sommelier George Miliotes, a new addition to the bar is a bit more spirited. Hooten Young American Whiskey, with notes of maple, vanilla and ripe apple, is now available straight up, neat or in "The Hoot" cocktail. Miliotes worked directly with Master Sgt. Norm Hooten and Tim Young in the finishing of the whiskey, including rigorous rounds of tasting to find the right fit and best tasting whiskey for the brand. The finished product is a tribute to the brave men and women of the armed forces, with a portion of the proceeds donated to charities that support veterans. "The uniqueness of our whiskey can be attributed to the 12 years of aging, as well as the second fill barrels instead of using the first fill," Miliotes says. "You can't fake aged whiskey, much like you can't claim wines are from old vines if they are new. Being able to find this aged American whiskey that is relaxed and different brings

something new to an overcrowded whiskey market. After countless hours blending, evaluating proofs and tasting, we are thrilled with the final product." When it comes to the food menu, several new items have caught our eye. If you're just passing through, The Basket is offering Frozen & Fries, a feature that pairs a French fry basket loaded with a variety of unique toppings with one of the bar's frozen cocktails. Pairings include Queso French Fries paired with Frose, Togarashi French Fries paired with Friezling prepared with Dole Whip Lime, California French Fries made with Dole Whip Pineapple and Buffalo French Fries paired with Freaujolais. Inside the restaurant, a new brunch addition includes a Fried Chicken Biscuit with pimento cheese, bacon relish and a sunny side up egg, while the lunch menu features a Fried Fish sandwich complemented with house-made pickles, gribiche sauce and a buttery brioche bun. A popular nightly feature is the 36-ounce Tomahawk for Two, served with garlic rosemary potatoes and pepper bacon relish. This dish can even feed three or four people easily. Next time you're at Disney Springs, check out Wine Bar George to see what's new.

The Hoot Ingredients: - 1.5 ounces Hooten Young American Whiskey - Aged 12 Years - 0.5 ounces G.E. Massenez Crème de Cassis - 0.5 ounces fresh squeezed lime juice - Ginger beer, for topping

Directions: Shake ingredients 1-3 together and pour the mixture into a Collins glass. Top with a splash of ginger beer and garnish with a lime.

The Value of Market Intelligence

Despite challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Stockworth’s Real Estate Advisors are seeing a surge of luxury market activity. If the real estate market is experiencing a slowdown, it certainly is not being seen in the luxury market.

Historically, known as one of the largest investments held within a lifetime, today’s real estate purchases during these uncertain times are just that. “Large and high dollar,” says Erin Wanner of Stockworth, one of the luxury sector’s seasoned industry veterans. “Despite the turmoil we may be treading through, I am currently representing buyers and sellers within the area’s most prestigious and 26

Purchasers in today’s market are seeking amenities at home and are

Properties, such as the one featured here, offer everything from a home office, home gym, sauna, theater room, game room, private beach, pool, and boats/ jet skis. After a long day of zoom meetings at the (home) office, and virtual learning with the kids, what better way to blow off steam and have a little fun then walking out your back door to your own waterfront paradise. Most importantly, having room for all of the family to gather and be together for extended periods of time is a much larger priority now than ever before. Stockworth has a proven track record of consistently leading in the luxury real estate space, and much of that success is attributed to their simple

Protecting Yourself in the Sunshine State

Utilize these tips to keep your skin healthy and to prevent overexposure to the sun. Courtesy of Healthy West Orange

W

e’ve all been there: spending a perfect day at the beach, sporting your new bathing suit, enjoying the sand and sea, and ending the day looking like a lobster. Yikes! Overexposure to the sun could ruin your day, your vacation, or even worse, your overall health. Sun poisoning, skin damage and skin cancer are very real threats, even if they may be years down the road. Having a strategy for catching some shade from harmful ultraviolet rays is important. Prevention Tips According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, these are some prevention guidelines for protecting yourself from the harmful effects of the sun. • Seek the shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. • Don’t get sunburned. • Avoid tanning, and never use UV tanning beds. • Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. • Anyone over the age of six months should use sunscreen. Children younger shouldn’t be exposed to the sun since their skin is highly sensitive to the sun’s rays and chemicals in sunscreen. • Use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended out-

28

Central Florida Lifestyle | September 2020

door activity, use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. • Apply 1 ounce of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Re-apply every two hours or after swimming or excessive sweating. • Examine your skin head-to-toe every month. • See a dermatologist at least once a year for a professional skin exam.

Why Sunscreen? And What is SPF?

We know sunscreen helps to prevent sunburn, right? But, how do you determine which sunscreen to get? Let’s break it down! UVB rays are the chief culprit behind sunburn, while UVA rays, which penetrate the skin more deeply, are associated with wrinkling, leathering, sagging and other light-induced effects of aging. Here’s how it works, as explained by The Skin Cancer Foundation. • If it takes 20-minutes for your unprotected skin to start turning red, using an SPF 15 sunscreen theoretically prevents reddening 15 times longer — about five hours. The factor of SPF is the multiplier that extends the time it takes to redden the skin. • Another way to look at it is in terms of percentages: SPF 15 filters out

approximately 93% of all incoming UVB rays. SPF 30 keeps out 97% and SPF 50 keeps out 98%. They may seem like small differences, but if you are light sensitive, or have a history of skin cancer, those extra percentages will make a difference. • As you can see, no sunscreen can block all UV rays. • The effectiveness of sunscreen shouldn’t be expected to last more than two hours, especially if you’re sweating or swimming. Re-application needs to be done if you don’t want to get burned. Keep your skin protected with a fabulous hat, movie star sunglasses and glisten from the shine of sunscreen. Who said sun protection can’t be stylish?

What You Need to Know About

Ovarian Cancer

This Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, get to know the symptoms of the disease and learn how to listen to when your body is giving you signs that something is up. By Lyndsay Fogarty

S

• Upset stomach or heartburn • Back pain • Pain during sex • Constipation or menstrual changes

• Bloating • Pelvic or abdominal pain • Trouble eating or feeling full quickly • Feeling the need to urinate urgently or often • Fatigue

The NOCC notes that persistence of symptoms is key when it comes to the possibility of ovarian cancer. If a woman’s symptoms are new and don’t resolve with normal interventions, such as a change in diet, exercise or increased rest, after a twoweek period then a consultation with a doctor is recommended. Listening to your body is the best way to catch ovarian cancer in its earliest stages, when the survival rate is near 90%. Sadly, only about 19% of ovarian cancer diagnoses are made in these early stages (stages I or II) due to the silent signs and symptoms, according to the NOCC. If diagnosed in stage III or higher, the survival rate dips as low as 28%. Also, it’s important to be aware of your risk factors, which includes genetic predisposition; personal or family history of breast, ovarian or colon cancer; increasing age; and infertility. Having one or more of these risk factors doesn’t mean that you will ultimately develop ovarian cancer, but you should be vigilant in watching for early symptoms if you do.

everal preventative screenings help women stay on top of their health. Mammograms can detect breast cancer at its earliest stages, and Pap tests are a powerful tool for identifying abnormalities that can lead to cervical cancer. However, there is currently no preventative screening available for the most deadly gynecological cancer: ovarian cancer. According to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, ovarian cancer is a disease in which cancerous cells occur inside, near or on the outer layer of the ovaries, depending on the type and stage. The ovaries are almond-shaped organs within a woman’s reproductive system that store eggs as well as produce estrogen and progesterone. Ovarian cancer is tricky because it often presents with vague symptoms that can be confused for other ailments or that are easy for women to brush off as nothing. These symptoms, which typically get more intense over time, include:

Central Florida Lifestyle | September 2020

Did You Know? 1. One in 78 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in her lifetime. 2. Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women ages 35-74. 3. The American Cancer Society estimates that, this year, over 22,000 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed and more than 14,000 women will die from ovarian cancer. 4. Pap tests do not detect ovarian cancer. 5. All women are at risk, but genetic factors do come into play. Genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations can show potential risk for breast and ovarian cancer as well as several other cancers.

INDOORS Bring the outside into your home with a terrarium project that is fun for the whole family. Here’s how to do it. By Lyndsay Fogarty

STEP 1

Choose a container. It can be open or closed and any size, depending on your preference. Place one to two inches of washed pebbles on the bottom of the container to allow for drainage.

STEP 2

If you’re making a closed terrarium, add a layer of charcoal, which will filter the air and cleanse the bacteria. Open-top terrariums will get plenty of fresh air, so there is no need to add charcoal if you go that route. Next, add about two inches of light potting soil to hold the plants.

32

Central Florida Lifestyle | September 2020

Special thanks to Palmer’s Garden & Goods for providing materials and instruction.

STEP 3

Choose several plants, taking into account textures and plant type. Mixing textures will be nice visually, but make sure not to mix succulent and foliage varieties because they have different watering requirements. Succulents work best in an open-top container and foliage will prosper in a closed container. Consider a layer of decorative or live moss to create moisture and add a pop of color. Plant your selections just as you would in a pot.

STEP 4

Finish the terrarium by adding water. Using a spray bottle is best, as you risk adding too much when pouring water directly into the container and leaving the water with no outlet. Make sure to spray the soil with water, not the plants.

STEP 5

Choose a place to display your beautiful new terrarium. Whether it’s on the coffee table or on the desk in your home office, the plants will thrive as long as they’re in a place that has plenty of light. Most plants will grow to the size of the container, but you may need to re-plant in six months to one year.

A windowsill herb garden for your kitchen makes for a pretty decoration and a useful tool when whipping up a fabulous dish. Wet herbs like mint, basil, cilantro, parsley and dill do best inside, and they are quick and easy to plant. STEP 1: Start by adding a layer of light potting soil to the bottom of the pot and add the plant so it sits an inch below the lip. Add just enough soil to the top layer so it doesn’t spill over the top. Tap down to get rid of air pockets and add extra soil as needed to fill any holes. Continue until all of the plants you want to include have been added to the pots. Display the pots on a tray to allow for water drainage. STEP 2: Add water to the soil using a watering can until it drains through. It goes without saying that you should water the soil when it begins looking dry. You should also spray the whole plant with water every 10 days and use an organic liquid fertilizer every 10 days for the best results. The key to a healthy plant is to pinch off the old growth as you’re using it.

Why Now is a Good Time to Buy By Gonzalo Senior, IRM, Investments, Real Estate & Management

H

ome ownership is a dream that has seemed out of reach for many during this COVID-19 pandemic, as uncertainty has led the way in many aspects of life. However, now is a prime time to purchase a new home. I’ll tell you why. In June, the Realtor.com Housing Recovery Index showed that the U.S. housing market continues to recover despite the global pandemic. This is mostly due to low mortgage interest rates, which are consistently hovering around the 2.5% to 3.8% range. At the current interest rate, buyers should expect to pay just over $400 per month for every $100,000 borrowed on a 30-year fixed mortgage. With a 15-year fixed mortgage, buyers would pay close to $700 per month for every $100,000 borrowed. Both of these options offer

huge savings over this time last year, providing homebuyers with the opportunity to save thousands of dollars through the life of the loan. Mortgage rates can be influenced by a variety of factors, from politics and world events to economic activity, particularly inflation. While home prices have remained level and inventory low in the Orlando market, the current real estate market environment is great for potential buyers to make a deal with a rate that works for them down the road. Last month, Doug Duncan, the senior vice president and chief economist at Fannie Mae, said, “Low mortgage rates have helped cushion some of the impact of the pandemic on consumer sentiment regarding whether it’s a good time to buy, which picked back up this month to late-2018 levels.”

Potential buyers see this in the numbers, too. According to the Fannie Mae Home Purchase Sentiment Index, consumers report a more optimistic view of home buying conditions right now. Fewer consumers are reporting expectations that mortgage rates will go up in the next 12 months, which is down to 25% from 33% last in June. This increased 10 percentage points on the HPSI scale. With consumer confidence high and interest rates low, now is the time to start the home buying process with an experienced realtor by your side. Once your realtor helps you find the home of your dreams, be sure to work quickly with a lender to lock in these low interest rates. In this market environment, home ownership will be a more affordable reality for many.

A Foundation of Support HomeAid Orlando is launching the first renovation project for emergency shelter and safe house for human trafficking survivors By Laura Richeson

T

he transformation of a former four-unit, 4,200-square-foot condo building in Seminole County will soon serve as an emergency shelter and safe house for human trafficking survivors. Through a partnership between HomeAid Orlando and The Lifeboat Project, volunteer building industry partners have donated their expertise, materials and labor to rehabilitate and build new spaces to serve homeless families and individuals. This first project for HomeAid Orlando began on Aug. 5 with a target completion date of Sept. 11, 2020. Human trafficking occurs every day. It’s there, just hard to spot. Florida is the third most active state of an epidemic affecting more than 23,000 people per year, according to a 2018 report by the Polaris project. Not just sex trafficking but also labor trafficking in agriculture, restaurant, construction, domestic work, entertainment and other industries. Survivors who escape the abusive networks often have nowhere to go and no one to help them. The Lifeboat Project provides comprehensive services such as counseling, housing, educational support and job placement. "This will be one of just a few emergency shelter and safe house facilities strictly designated for victims

40

Central Florida Lifestyle | September 2020

of human trafficking in the U.S.," says Jill Bolander Cohen, founder and CEO of The Lifeboat Project. The new Emergency Shelter and Safe House will serve up to 14 survivors at a time. Each survivor is paired with a case manager/victim advocate from The Lifeboat Project to create a care plan. Through a dedicated staff and network of local partners, The Lifeboat Project provides wraparound services such as legal, health care and counseling for all survivors. “Supportive services are offered to maximize housing stability and prevent future homelessness. This approach provides a safe and stable place to help improve their mental, physical and financial situations and to achieve healthy independence,” Cohen says. Park Square Homes serves as the volunteer Project Builder Captain and has donated goods and services totaling more than $125,000. Suppliers and vendor partners donated 100% of the construction costs for this project to include new cabinetry, counters, plumbing, HVAC, electrical systems, new appliances, interior trim, exterior repairs, landscaping, flooring, paint and more. “HomeAid Orlando was created to leverage the power and resourcefulness of the Central Florida residential building industry to work alongside with worthy nonprofit organizations

and our local governments to provide direct tangible solutions for those in need,” says Russ Beymer, executive director of HomeAid Orlando. Rebuilding communities is something we all can do, whether it's providing financial resources or volunteering. Organizations like HomeAid Orlando thrive off of the support they receive from the communities they serve. “Central Florida isn't just a place where we build homes, it's the place we call home, and have for more than 25 years," says Vishaal Gupta, coCEO of Park Square Homes. "Which is why we proudly support local charities and outreach organizations that help improve our community. It's our way of giving back to the place that has given us so much."

Here are our picks for this year’s top Magical Dining spots.

Shop Local

for Your Home Remodel The West Orange Chamber of Commerce Business Directory is your one-stop shop for help with refreshing your indoor and outdoor spaces. By Stina D’Uva

B

ack in January, I began to plan the renovation of my pool, deck and lanai. Somehow, I must have known that I would be spending a lot more time than usual at home this year. Naturally, I reached out to West Orange Chamber of Commerce members for the products and services that I needed for my outdoor renovation. When I didn’t have a chamber member in a particular category that I needed for my project, I recruited new businesses to join the chamber. Through our membership, I was able to have the pool renovated and redecorated with new outdoor furniture, plants, planters, area rugs and lighting that were all purchased from chamber member businesses. Once I completed that renovation in early March, I noticed other projects that needed attention outside my house. There were more weeds than grass in my yard, so I used the chamber directory to find a landscaper. Once the new sod was in, I hired a lawn maintenance company to keep the weeds out. The problem with home renovation is it’s hard to stop once you get started. Since my home is nearly 31 years old, I had lots of projects on the inside, too. Starting with the basics, I knew that I had to get the inside of my house painted. After all, it had been 20 years. Once again, the painter will be a chamber member and the paint will be from a chamber member, too. I will freshen 46

Central Florida Lifestyle | September 2020

up the kitchen cabinets and replace hardware with the help of a chamber member business. When that is done, I will have my carpets cleaned and windows washed. I’ll probably need some new home decor items around the house, too. As I am cleaning out, I will donate those unwanted items to a chamber charity for resale. I will be doing my part to keep the economy going by using local, and most importantly, chamber member businesses for my renovation needs. These businesses not only benefit from the referrals but their investment in our chamber provides resources that even help individuals who aren’t members. In addition, consumer studies show the benefit to businesses that belong to their local chamber. Several years back, a study was done by the Schapiro Group, an Atlanta-based strategic consulting firm. The study concluded that businesses involved with their local chamber have a 68% increase in their local reputation and there is an 80% increase in the likelihood that consumers will patronize those businesses in the future. As you look around your home and workplace, consider using the products and services that West Orange chamber members offer to the communities they serve. You’re not only helping them but you’re helping your community thrive. Visit wochamber.com and search for them by name or by category under the Business Directory tab.

+ HOW YOU CAN Help

A Safe Haven for People with Mental Illness Dave’s House's mission is to transform lives by eliminating homelessness for those living with mental illness in Central Florida.

Photo Credit: Courtesy of Dave's House

H

omes are a sanctuary, but for some people, especially those with mental illness, their only sanctuary might be a cramped car or a tarp in the woods. Roughly 45% of homeless people suffer from serious and persistent mental illness and often find themselves in a situation they can’t get out of on their own. That’s exactly what the Dave’s House program hopes to prevent. By purchasing multi-tenant homes and working with topnotch behavioral health providers like Aspire Health Partners in Greater Orlando, Dave’s House aims to eliminate homelessness among those with mental illness, all the while relieving communities and taxpayers of the fiscal weight. The need for permanent housing for adults who have serious and persistent mental illness is both social and financial. A stable home is vital to recovery for these individuals, but many who are suffering from mental illness lack that stability and live in a constant state of crisis. This leads them into what is referred to as the

50

Central Florida Lifestyle | September 2020

“revolving door," which offers no opportunity for true recovery. Because of this, many mentally ill homeless citizens wind up in hospitals, homeless shelters and even jail. These stays are costly to taxpayers, too. The annual cost of a homeless person living with a serious mental illness, including prison, ER visits and hospital stays, is $31,065, according to 2014 research by the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness. The yearly cost of a Dave's House residency is $10,051. Dave's House was founded in 2008 by Lin and Ron Wilensky in order to help individuals like Lin’s brother, Dave, who had schizophrenia. The organization has developed permanent supportive housing for over 100 individuals who are living productive lives in an atmosphere of mental wellness, stability, autonomy and safety. Dave's House's reach also extends beyond the Central Florida area. Nine single family homes are located in Orlando, Fort Lauderdale as well as Fairfax, Virginia.

How You Can Help 1. Donate: Make a monetary donation or give essential home supplies for residents. A full list of needed items can be found at DavesHouseEvents.org. 2. Support a fundraiser. During Mental Health Awareness Week from Oct. 4-10, the organization will host Dave's Virtual House Party. The week-long event encourages the community to raise awareness, set up a personal fundraiser, bid in the online auction and more. 3. Volunteer. Opportunities include social services and community projects, support for events and assistance with furthering the reach of their programs.
