Central Virginia Chapter Annual Report 2010

Dear friends and supporters, With 54 years of serving people living with MS, our Chapter’s services are needed more now than ever before. Despite the rising costs of health care, the increased cost of living, and the devastating unemployment rate, the Central Virginia Chapter is committed to holding strong in a down economy to ensure that we are one positive thing people Gregory R. Bishop Chairman, Board of Trustees can always rely on while battling MS. Our successful fundraising efforts would not have been possible without our dedicated staff, volunteers, and strong community partners who have generously shared their resources, time and effort to ensure we met or exceeded our fundraising goals. Some new community partnerships were born this year, including our first annual Leadership Class in Fredericksburg, which recruited community business leaders to join the fight against MS. Members of our chapter participated in the 30 mile MS Challenge Walk in Williamsburg to raise funds and awareness, while the Annual Campaign recognized a new level of giving called the Golden Circle. These donors and other interested stakeholders had the opportunity to tour the MS lab located at Virginia Commonwealth Medical Center. Here Dr. Babette Fuss is using a $496,000 National MS Society grant for her promising research of myelin repair, making her an excellent example of how the National MS Society research dollars are at work locally to find a cure. In this 2010 Annual Report of our Chapter, you will read about our accomplishments and those we served throughout Central Virginia. Our commitment is demonstrated through our direct service to clients, the increased fundraising of Walk and Bike participants, as well as our continued advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill and in the Virginia General Assembly. Thank you for joining us on this journey to a world free of MS! Greg and Sherri

Sherri D. Ellis, Chapter President

Chapter Highlights 2010 Chapter Services Strive to Assist Those in Need The chapter provided over $18,000 in financial assistance for those with short-term critical needs, such as help paying for rent, utilities, durable medical equipment, and home modifications. Furthermore, the chapter awarded $7,500 in scholarships to college-bound high school seniors who either have MS themselves or have a parent/guardian living with MS. Chapter Programs Continue to Thrive With multiple educational programs hosted by HealthSouth, a Family Day at the Diamond with 70 attendees, as well as a Couple’s Relationship workshop for 13 couples, chapter programs are continuing to grow and are having a greater impact in Central Virginia. The chapter’s eleven self-help groups continue to provide invaluable emotional support to those living with MS and their participation continues to increase. Successful Year for Walk MS & Bike MS A total of 2,173 participants raised $285,880 at Walk MS events in Fredericksburg, Richmond and Tappahannock. 523 cyclists not only rode 150 miles, but raised $375,490 in our 25th Anniversary Bike MS: Ride Virginia. To top it off, we kicked off our 2011 fiscal year with a new walk in Petersburg, which brought out 200 participants and raised $14,235. We’re off to a great start! MS Activists Move Things Forward At the federal level, volunteers visited the district offices of Congressmen Eric Cantor (R-07) and Randy Forbes (R-04) to discuss MS research funding, a national MS registry and increased funding for lifespan respite care. At the state level, we influenced the passage of several laws, including House Joint Resolution 341 - declaring the second week of March, MS Awareness Week in the Commonwealth. At the local level, we joined the Partnership for Housing Affordability to work on increasing affordable and accessible housing in metro Richmond. Fredericksburg Takes the Lead Our chapter was excited to introduce the Fredericksburg Region MS Leadership Class of 2010. The inaugural class was a unique campaign that recognized local executives and entrepreneurs, and raised money for local research, programs and services. The class included 8 members and proved to be an inspiring initiative, raising $18,406 their first year.

Golden Circle Recognizes Top Donors The chapter kicked off The Golden Circle in 2010, which recognizes individual giving at the $1,000 level and above. Golden Circle members lead by example, making a powerful statement and demonstrating their commitment to the care, cause and cure of MS. Members participated in everything from tours of the MS research labs at VCU Medical Center to hosting an MS Family Day rooting for the Richmond Flying Squirrels to a wine tasting event.
