Central Virginia Chapter Annual Report 2011
Dear Friends & Supporters, The Central Virginia Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is not new to serving people with MS; in fact we celebrated our 55th year as a chapter this past October. However, we understand that Gregory R. Bishop Chairman, Board of Trustees despite years of experience, we need to continue to evolve and stay current with our members’ needs by hosting new programs and events, finding new ways to reach our members, and continue to spread MS awareness. This year has marked a year of first-time events for us – the first Walk MS in Historic Old Towne Petersburg, the first Happy Hour Walk along the canal in downtown Richmond, and the first Women on the Move Breakfast in Fredericksburg. It is also the first time Bike MS raised over $426,000 and the first time we sent children to MS Kids Camp. Furthermore, it is the first time as a Society that we have committed to raising over $250 million for MS research to stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost, and end MS forever. Although we are proud to share these accomplishments with you, we feel that the best is yet to come! In this 2011 Annual Report, you will read about our accomplishments and those we served throughout Central Virginia as well as those who have so graciously supported us to help our chapter meet so many of these important “firsts.” Thank you for your support as we continue to move towards a world free of MS. Greg & Sherri Sherri D. Ellis, Chapter President

Chapter Highlights 2011 Chapter Services Strive to Assist Those in Need The chapter provided over $27,700 in financial assistance for those with short-term critical needs, such as help paying for rent, utilities, durable medical equipment, and home modifications. In addition, the chapter awarded $8,800 in scholarships to college-bound high school seniors who either have MS themselves or have a parent/guardian living with MS. Chapter Attends MS Kids Camp With generous support from Ronald McDonald House Charities, the chapter partnered with the Western Pennsylvania, Central Pennsylvania, and Metro Jersey Chapters to host MS Kids Camp for children who have a parent/guardian living with MS. Over 120 children attended camp with 11 attending from Central Virginia. Walk MS & Bike MS Reach New Heights We hosted 5 Walk MS events this year. 2317 people came out and Joined the Movement ®. We raised a total of $300,000! Walkers took to the streets in Richmond, Fredericksburg, Tappahannock, Petersburg and even on the Canal Walk in downtown Richmond. Bike MS had a wonderful ride this year with a beautiful new route and raised a record $426,000. The Page Auto Group returned as our presenting sponsor. Thanks to all the teams and individuals who rode and fundraised. MS Activists Move Things Forward Statewide advocacy efforts have brought the issue of cost sharing for prescription drugs to the attention of law makers as the Joint Commission on Health Care has begun to study the issue. The chapter appreciates Delegate John O’Bannon’s efforts in pushing this issue forward in the General Assembly. Women in Richmond & Fredericksburg on the Move This year we hosted two Women on the Move events. The luncheon in Richmond was a lot of fun as people wore their favorite “fun” shoes and had them photographed. We recognized 12 outstanding women from the Greater Richmond Area as women who were on the move. Debbie Johnston, President of Care Advantage received the 2011 Woman on the Move Award. The luncheon raised $34,000. We appreciate that Sheltering Arms Rehabilitation Centers was the presenting sponsor and that Saxon Shoes was the program sponsor. In Fredericksburg we hosted a women’s breakfast. We had a great turn out for a first time event. We honored philanthropist, Doris Buffett as the 2011 Woman on the Move. The breakfast raised $11,000. Thanks to Saxon Shoes for being the presenting sponsor.
