Presenters Dr. Tony Gentry, Ph.D, OTR/L He holds an M.A. in occupational therapy from New York University and a Ph.D. in Instructional Technology from the University of Virginia. He has focused his clinical, teaching and research interests in the areas of neurological rehabilitation and in assistive technology for cognition. He currently directs the Assistive Technology for Cognition Laboratory in the VCU O.T. Department. He has lectured nationally and internationally on topics including brain injury rehabilitation, emerging cognitive technologies and evidence-based practice. Marie Gerardo, APRN,-BC, MS, ANP Ms. Gerardo is an adjunct faculty member at the Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing. She received her ANP Certificate from VCU. She has extensive experience in cardiac surgery, maternity & newborn critical care, adult primary care and neurology. She is employed by Neurological Associates. Robbin C Kolbe, ATP Ms. Kolbe is employed by West Home Health Care Inc. She has specialized knowledge of seating and positioning of MS clients.

Workshop Description

Objectives

This is a course to introduce or re-familiarize health care professionals with the cause and treatments for multiple sclerosis and how to better address the needs of patients with MS.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: Discuss MS including disease course classification, treatment strategies & the unique challenges of working with patients with MS Identify & apply appropriate rehabilitation assessment tools & methods Develop, in collaboration with the patient, family & other healthcare team members, realistic rehabilitation goals for patients presenting with a wide range of functional problems Implement appropriate rehabilitation interventions including exercise programs, assistive devices and adaptive strategies Refer healthcare professionals and people with MS to community-based resources and relevant publications.

$40 for nurses ($55 if you want to include lunch)

Target Audience The program is designed for OTs, PTs, Speech Language Pathologists, and Nurses. OTs, PTs & Speech Pathologists will receive 6.0 CECs for successfully completing the entire workshop. A certificate of completion will be provided to all participants.
