IT CAN BE DAUNTING COMING TO A SUNDAY SERVICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, SO WE AIM TO MAKE YOUR VISIT AS SIMPLE AND ENJOYABLE AS POSSIBLE BY LETTING YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. Fresh coffee, a selection of teas and other refreshments along with doughnuts and snacks are served from 10.15am in the main lobby of the school. If you have children and youth they can be registered for Vineyard Kids too. The service will start with a time of worship, which lasts for about 20 minutes. Feel free to stand, sing and join in with our worship or you are welcome to sit, relax and enjoy the atmosphere. After worship, the children and youth will go to their groups. At this time there will then be a very short break, during which bowls of chocolates are passed round and our offering taken.

This is then followed by a few announcements, and a chance to hear some news from the life of the church. Then, someone will give a bible-related talk, which is followed by more worship and an opportunity for everyone to respond and receive prayer if they would like to. After the service, please make your way over to the Information Point, where you can chat to some of our team. Ask any questions you might have and discover other helpful information. You’ll also have time to grab another drink from the Refreshments point if you wish.

EVENING SERVICE Sunday’s from 6pm at The Good Loaf, Overstone Road. For more info please speak to Tom Nicholson

COMMUNION Communion is held on the first Sunday of each month. We serve an open table, that means if you’re on a journey towards Jesus, you are very welcome to partake! SUMMER 2016 CONNECT | 05

A NEW LANGUAGE FOR

DISCIPLESHIP THIS PAST TERM WE HAVE BEEN LAYING DOWN THE FOUNDATION FOR A NEW LANGUAGE FOR WHAT WE THINK DISCIPLESHIP CAN HOPEFULLY LOOK LIKE IN THE LIFE OF OUR CHURCH FAMILY OVER THE COMING YEARS. BY STEVE GEE 08 | CONNECT SUMMER 2016

Our goal has been to build a clear and hopefully easy to remember framework around three simple words; UP, IN and OUT. These three words or three dimensions as we often refer to them shouldn’t be unfamiliar to those who have been around Central Vineyard for any length of time. The idea of UP, IN and OUT has been a part of our DNA as a church from the very beginning. In addition to this, over the past term we have introduced some tools that will hopefully help each one of us think and act more intentionally about living lives in a healthy rhythm of UP, IN and OUT. Each tool or symbol we’ve used is borrowed from the world of digital media and hopefully they will be a reminder as we take this journey transformation together. The UP dimension is about our connection to God. Looking up involves exalting God for His greatness, enjoying God for His goodness and encountering God with His presence. The primary call of any disciple is to love God and walk with Him. It is in this place of worship, adoration, friendship and pursuit of Him that life and fruitfulness flows into the life of any disciple.

TO HELP US DO THIS WE INTRODUCED THE FIRST FOUR SYMBOLS:

POWER

Up with prayer

STOP

Read the word

REFRESH

In worship

LISTEN

Hearing Gods voice

These are rooted in a conviction that learning how to pray, encountering God in worship, reading the Bible and hearing God’s voice, are the mainstays of the upward life of a disciple of Jesus. The IN dimension is about the development of our character. We believe this happens in the context of community. Looking IN involves changing our ideas (the way we see the world) to line up with God’s perspective. It means understanding our new identity in Christ and for that truth to transform our behaviour accordingly. God is happily committed to transforming our lives to look more like Jesus'. This is the process of character development. Key to this process is God placing us into community called the Church. In order to grow in character we need other people. Very little change happens in insolation; we need others! Forgiveness, love, honour and encouragement can only flow when we are in real relationships where love and truth can bring about maturity.

So the next four symbols we’ve introduced, help us focus on character development and inward formation, they are:

EJECT

Kairos moments

FAST FORWARD

A new identity in Christ

RECHARGE

Care for our souls

HOME

Rooted in Family

These tools are about learning to walk in repentance and faith, learning how to stay healthy and living in our new identity as a Child of God, while being rooted and connect to the life of the local church. The OUT dimension is about fulfilling our calling. Looking out involves nurturing our ministry gifts, being on mission with Jesus and multiplying disciples as we seek to see His Kingdom come. Jesus did not enlist His disciples to a cruise-liner but a battleship! Jesus has commissioned each of us to bring hope, courage, promise and joy wherever we find ourselves! Disciples are called to be rivers, not swamps or deserts. Swamps typically have an inflow of water but nowhere for that water to go; deserts have an absence of inflow altogether. By contrast rivers have water flowing in and out which is why they bring life! You and I are called to be rivers, giving away what God given to us. CONTINUED...

SUMMER 2016 CONNECT | 09

A NEW LANGUAGE FOR

DISCIPLESHIP OF OUR OWN

The final four symbols we introduced were:

EQ

Understanding who you are

BRIGHTNESS

Revealing the Kingdom

VOLUME DOWN

Where we start

MULTIPLY

Empowering Others

These Outward tools or symbols involve understanding our ministry motivations. Knowing what God has called us to do with our lives; knowing how we bring the Kingdom of God wherever we are; and knowing how we are to multiply ourselves in others and be obedient to Jesus' command, "to go and make disciples".

YOU CAN NOW ACCESS ALL THESE NEW TOOLS ONLINE AT WWW.CENTRALVINEYARD.CO.UK/ TRANSFORMED Please note this page is password protected (pw: transformed2016) For each tool or symbol we’ve introduced, there are a series of practical worksheet to help you think through each dimension. Our hope is that the community based Connect Groups will take the time to reinforce these tools and build healthy environments where we can talk openly about how we are learning to apply these new rules of life together. You can also revisit our 14 week teaching series called Transformed, either via our iTunes podcast, SoundCloud or by going to the Listen Again section on our website.

ONE FINAL WORD SO WHERE DO WE SEE THIS ALL GOING? Well, we want to think of this new set of tools and symbols as a kind of new rule of life in the context of our church family. Kind of like the monks of old who lived in monastic orders, we want to encourage every person who calls Central Vineyard home to be living lives in a healthy rhythm of UP, IN and OUT. Each of these tools and symbols we’ve introduced will be a practical help in forming the kind of people we are hopefully becoming.

10 | CONNECT SUMMER 2016

We want to do all this because we believe we are to be a church of disciples that go and make other disciples. So in order for us to be able to reproduce ourselves in others, we first have got to have something we can give away. We believe Disciples are intentional. They are the kind of people who engage in habits and practices that help them to grow and become more like Jesus. So my prayer and hope isn’t that we would become enamoured by a system or process, but rather as we learn to put into practice some simple tools, we would begin to live lives that compel us to go and reach out to others.

CONNECT GROUPS & HUDDLES CONNECT GROUPS & HUDDLES are the heartbeat of our community, where you can develop meaningful relationships with other people at your own pace. The groups of 8-12 adults meet within people’s homes or social venues across the town for 3 months at a time, with an ‘open month’ in between. During the open months (January, May and September) there are other activities or short training courses available for the whole church, called ‘Equip’. At this time we also relaunch the connect groups, allowing an opportunity for everyone to sign up to the Connect groups, making them very accessible to anyone who has not been part of a group previously.

From 2016, we have incorporated HUDDLES into the community based connect groups. These are small, same-sex groups of 3-5 people where more personal relationships can develop. This is the core of peer-based discipleship, where we can challenge, support and encourage one another, through prayer and accountability. The connect groups meet fortnightly as a whole group, and then on the alternate weeks, will meet in huddles formed out of members of the group.

If you would like to find out more about our Connect Groups or Huddles, please speak to Pete & Anya Willis or visit: www.centralvineyard.co.uk/community pete.willis@centralvineyard.co.uk anya.willis@centralvineyard.co.uk

SEEKING JUSTICE &

COMPASSION by Anya Willis

RE:STORE NORTHAMPTON, THE COMPASSION MINISTRY OF CENTRAL VINEYARD, HAS BEEN RUNNING IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER FOR THE PAST 7 YEARS. THE FIRST PROJECT, NORTHAMPTON FOOD BANK STARTED IN 2009, AND WE ARE NOW CELEBRATING WHAT HAS BEEN AND LOOKING AHEAD TO THE GREAT THINGS GOD HAS IN STORE OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS.

14 | CONNECT SUMMER 2016

IN 2013 GOD SPOKE TO US ABOUT THE CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT OF RE:STORE AND THE NEED TO STEP OUT INTO NEW TERRITORY, SOMETIMES ONLY KNOWING THE NEXT STEP. The words of the song ‘Hosanna’ came to mind “Heal my heart and make it clean, Open up my eyes to the things unseen. Show me how to love like You have loved me. Break my heart for what breaks Yours, Everything I am for your Kingdom’s cause”, We’ve always had a call to be a church that seeks justice and compassion, living alongside and loving people who may be unseen or unloved by others. During this season we developed a fresh vision, a renewed sense of energy and new staff team and volunteers, which enabled the Food Bank to grow into a multi-site and inter-church ministry. Since then, we have developed an amazing community cafe space, The HUB, where people from all walks of life feel welcome and accepted, and can encounter Jesus in a very natural and relaxed environment. In 2015, our team led an Alpha course with our HUB community, and two amazing ladies have given their lives to Jesus, and are encouraging everyone else to pray, read their bibles and expect healing and restoration. Many of those who ware welcomed into the HUB want to stay, or do more, and we have been encouraging them to move into some of our other free activities to build skills and confidence, including The Allotment and COOK.

This Spring, as we secured our offer on the new building, we also secured a £500,000 grant (over 5 years, in partnership with 3 other agencies) from the Big Lottery ‘Help Through Crisis’ Fund. We really believe this was a clear confirmation of God providing us as a church the resources and opportunity to serve our town, by joining Him in the renewal of all things and transforming lives! It will enable us to continue to do much of the work we’ve been doing already, as well as some new activities, including work with children and families. We will be working in close partnership with Springs Family Centre (run by Kingdom Life Church), Central & East Northants Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Northamptonshire Community Foundation, to provide a wide range of services to people who have experienced crisis to access support, and move forwards to greater stability and independence. We are leading this project, and taking a holistic approach, which will address individuals physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs, and help them to access the best services available. This will include practical skills such as CV writing, preparing for interviews or cooking, as well as helping to build confidence through a range of activities. We believe that God is the key to transformation, so we are excited to see how He will use Central Vineyard in this partnership. Over the coming weeks and months there will be a number of opportunities for you to be involved and we appreciate all kinds of talents and skills, so please talk to Anya Willis or check out the A to Z to serving on page 18.

GOD'S BIG STORY IS THE FRAMEWORK WE USE TO TEACH THE BIBLE IN A RELEVANT WAY FOR ALL OUR CHILDREN AS WE SEEK EQUIP THEM IN THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES. It’s simply way of breaking the gospel into 6 sections. GOD MADE US TO LOVE

PEOPLE WALKED AWAY FROM GOD AND LOVE WAS BROKEN GOD HAS A PLAN AND SENT JESUS TO MAKE A WAY FOR US TO COME BACK TO HIM JESUS DID AMAZING THINGS IN THE WORLD AND WE CAN DO AMAZING THINGS TOO

GOD SENT THE HOLY SPIRIT TO HELP US GOD’S PROMISE TO US IS THAT ONE DAY EVERYTHING WILL BE AS GOD FIRST INTENDED IT TO BE

Each week we create a space where our children can come and share the everyday situations they are facing. We then help them to put those situations into God’s Big Story. 16 | CONNECT SUMMER SUMMER2016 2016

IT LOOKS A BIT LIKE THIS We invite the children to take part in activities that help them to explore their own lives and make sense of the things that happen. Maybe on of them has a loved one who is sick and needs God’s healing. We look at the reason that there is pain and suffering in the world is because people walked away from God and love was broken; bad things entered the world. Our response in our lives is to live as Jesus did; we can call upon God in our times of need and ask for the Holy spirit to help us. We may write a prayer for the person and peg it on our prayer washing line. We affirm the children with verses from the Bible that help the children to see what God has to say to us about any given situation we face. We want the children to understand that the bible is a living word where God can speak directly to them through the verses they read. Our aim is that all the children will grow in confidence of God’s word and see he has a hand on their lives. No matter what our children are facing we are creating a safe place for the children to come as they are and leave better equipped to face their many challenging situations of life.

THE YARD AT DREAMING THE IMPOSSIBLE 2016

At the end of last term our youth went to Lincolnshire for the annual Vineyard Dreaming the Impossible camp. For many of them it was their first time away from home and at an event of this kind. They were joining with 950 other 11 to 18 years from across the Vineyard Movement here in the UK and Ireland with 58 giving their lives to Jesus for the first time.

“ I’VE NEVER FELT SO ENGAGED WITH GOD AS I HAVE DONE THIS YEAR AT DTI. THE WORSHIP WAS AMAZING, THE TALKS WERE AMAZING AND THE PEOPLE WERE AMAZING TOO, I CAN’T WAIT FOR NEXT YEAR!”

Everyday they met to worship, hear some teaching and respond and receive prayer ministry. They got to hear some amazing speakers, including John & Debby Wright the National Directors of the Vineyard Movement in the UK & Ireland. ALL OUR YOUTH HAD AN AMAZING TIME, HEAR IS WHAT SOME OF THEM SAID…

“ DTI IS PROBABLY THE BEST PARTY ABOUT JESUS - ON A CAMPING TRIP - YOU WILL EVER EXPERIENCE. I STILL MISS BEING THERE NOW.” “ I HAD THE BEST TIME EVER! I ENJOYED THE ACTIVITIES ESPECIALLY THE SESSIONS BECAUSE THAT’S WHERE I FOUND GOD. FOR THE FIRST TIME I FELT CLOSE TO HIM AND WANTED TO DANCE TO THE MUSIC. I REMEMBER SHAKING AND COULDN’T STOP AND I WAS SO HAPPY BECAUSE I KNEW THAT JESUS WAS THERE. I CAN’T WAIT FOR NEXT YEAR.” SUMMER 2016 CONNECT | 17
