Street Church happens every Sunday as a drop-in service from 1.00pm to about 3.15pm at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church on Kettering Road, Northampton. Please speak to Ken Willis for details.

IT CAN BE DAUNTING COMING TO A SUNDAY SERVICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, SO WE AIM TO MAKE YOUR VISIT AS SIMPLE AND ENJOYABLE AS POSSIBLE BY LETTING YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. Fresh coffee, a selection of teas and other refreshments along with doughnuts and snacks are served from 10am by our Cafe Team. If you have children and youth they can be registered for their groups during this time. The service will start with a time of worship, which lasts for about 30 minutes. Feel free to stand, sing and join in with our worship or you are welcome to sit, relax and enjoy the atmosphere. After worship, the children and youth will go to their groups. We then have a very short break, during which bowls of chocolates are passed around and our offering taken.

This is followed by a few announcements, and a chance to hear some news from the life of the church. Then someone will give a Bible related talk, which is sometime followed by more worship and an opportunity for everyone to respond and receive prayer if they would like to. After the service, please make your way over to the Information Point, where you can chat to some of our team, ask any questions you might have and discover other helpful information. You’ll also have time to grab another drink if you like too.

COMMUNION Communion is held on the first Sunday of each month. We serve an open table, that means if you’re on a journey towards Jesus, you are very welcome to partake! SPRING 2017 CONNECT | 05

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, THERE IS NOTHING THAT SPECTACULAR ABOUT MOVING FROM THE 31ST OF DECEMBER TO THE 1ST OF JANUARY. I MEAN IN REALITY, IT REALLY IS JUST ONE DAY (OR MONTH FOR THAT MATTER) MOVING INTO THE NEXT. NOTHING DIFFERENT HAPPENS WHEN THE CLOCK TURNS MIDNIGHT ON THE 1ST OF JANUARY THAN IT DID THE PREVIOUS MONTH. YET AT THE SAME TIME AS HUMAN BEINGS WE CANâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;T HELP BUT RECOGNISE THE SIGNIFICANCE AND OPPORTUNITY THE START OF A NEW YEAR BRINGS. 08 | CONNECT SPRING 2017

HIS NEW YEAR’S EVE, WE WERE FLYING BACK FROM OUR CHRISTMAS BREAK IN THE UNITED STATES. SO WITH A DELAY IN TIME (AND A SEVEN HOUR FLIGHT AHEAD OF US,) IT GAVE ME SOME SPACE TO THINK AND REFLECT. IT’S OFTEN IN THESE MOMENTS, AT THE END OF AN OLD YEAR AND THE START OF A NEW ONE, THAT WE LOOK BACK ON WHAT HAS BEEN. WHAT HAS THE PASSING YEAR BROUGHT OUR WAY? HOW DID WE HANDLE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES WE FACED? AND HOW WE MIGHT HAVE BECOME A BETTER PERSON IN THE PROCESS? It is often very helpful to reflect, but at the start of a new year there is a greater challenge than simply looking back and that is to look forward. To look forward and begin to dream and think about the kind of person we would like to become. You see, as we address the challenges of our past year in light of a coming year, we either become (or maybe remain) bitter or work towards becoming better. As I said nothing magical happens when the clock turns midnight and a new year begins, other than we have an opportunity to have another go, to take the Father’s hand and allow him to lead us into life. Jesus said in John 10:10 - The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. The people of God are meant to be people who experience life in its fullest sense, that doesn’t mean we are free of problems and challenges. It does mean however, we are to experience life in its fullness in different ways. That we are to turn to different sources. In the book of Jeremiah, the prophet declares:

My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. JEREMIAH 2:13

One of our big failures as people is that we can find ourselves drawing from all the wrong sources, expecting to find the life only God can give. We can turn to shallow meaningless things, we can put our hope in people and relationships, only to find they eventually let us down. We can turn to things that medicate us; drugs, alcohol, food - temporary fixes that numb the pain and make us feel alive for a few fleeting moments. We’re also guilty of separating or compartmentalising our lives from the so called spiritual and the material. Some of this comes from the Greek influence in our culture. The Greeks were good at separating the spiritual from the material, seeing some thing as sacred and others as secular. But near the end of the second century, there was a bishop named Irenaeus, who wrote a classic Christian book called “Against Heresies.” In it Irenaeus uttered these famous and wonderful words, “The glory of God is man fully alive.” There is a great deal of meaning packed into these words. But one thing Irenaeus is arguing for is that we would live fully integrated lives – lives that do not separate the spiritual from the material, as if God were only interested in our “spirits” but is unconcerned with our bodies or our emotions. Bill Hybels, from Willow Creek Church, takes this call from Irenaeus and uses an illustration of car dashboard warning lights. CONTINUED > SPRING 2017 CONNECT | 09

Hybels said that most Christians pay attention to only one warning light on the dashboard – the spiritual warning light. So if you ask Christians about our relationship with God, we will often focus our attention on our devotional lives, whether we have sinned and whether we have been experiencing God’s voice or God’s presence. But there are other lights on the dashboard. There is the warning light of our bodies, the warning light of our emotions and the warning light of our relationships. Just because you are having a great devotional life doesn’t mean that your emotions or your body isn’t saying, “Danger, Maintenance Needed!” Eventually, neglect of these other warning signals will lead to disaster in every realm, the spiritual included. To put it plainly, every part of our lives is “spiritual.” Everything – our emotions such as anger, fear, joy, anxiety, disgust, grief and sadness – is of interest to God. Likewise, our blood pressure, pulse rate, body fat, tension headaches, sleep habits and aerobic fitness are also of interest to God. God is interested in our credit card debt, our reading and our television watching. Maybe you’re a person who sets goals at the start of the New Year. What would it look like for you to become ‘Fully Alive” in 2017? How can you, with God’s help, draw from His resources and begin to pay attention to the warning light on your own dashboard? For me 2016 was a year of many challenges; emotionally and spiritually. These took their toll on me physically. Over 2017 I know I need to shed a few pounds in weight and I need to get better sleeping habits and not burn the candle at both ends. Some of that will come by hard work and determination, but some will come from recognising I need to make some new investments emotionally and spiritually. 10 | CONNECT SPRING 2017

You see I tell you all those things not so you’ll feel sorry for me, or give me a pat on the back, but because I want to be the best person I can possibly be… I want to be the best dad, the best husband and the best pastor I can be, to bring glory to God and to be fully alive. I can only do that if I pay attention to the right things and make the necessary changes… so here’s me making myself very publicly accountable (gulp.) So how is your dashboard looking and how could you consider the ways you will glorify God by becoming fully alive in 2017? Here are a few brief suggestions: SPIRITUAL GAUGE The spiritual life must be replenished. Times for prayer, meditation, solitude, reading and silence are usually sufficient to refuel the tank. Pay attention to the soul and to the heart. Life flows from those places and, like a garden, they must be tended to and weeded regularly. CONSIDER:

• Some new tools in assisting your study of the Bible - sign up for HTB’s Bible in One Year - www. bibleinoneyear.org • Being intentional about setting aside time to rest without distraction. • Take a sabbath from technology to connect with God and loved ones. PHYSICAL GAUGE Lack of sleep, poor diet, too much caffeine or sugar, illness, and too little exercise or fresh air will drain your physical tank quickly. Some of these we cannot avoid, but they must be addressed. CONSIDER:

• Partnering with a few friends or maybe your connect group in losing some excess weight. • Giving up smoking or curbing your alcohol intake. • Joining a gym or sports club with a friend and hold each other accountable to go.

EMOTIONAL GAUGE Are you experiencing unresolved conflict with co-workers, family or friends? Are you continually sad, depressed, filled with fear, easily aggravated or overly defensive? If so, then your emotional gauge is likely near empty. CONSIDER:

• How to process these emotions with trusted and safe friends who know you and want to see you find healing. • Getting relationships back on track, addressing conflict and forgiving people who have offended you. • Making a list of things that fuel you emotionally, taking walks with your spouse, getting together with good friends, reading for pleasure (not for purpose), and going to the gym. What is on your list?

Our hope is that in 2017 Central Vineyard would be a place where people are becoming fully alive. A good way to start is by joining one of our connect groups in February. Connect groups are a place for people to grow in their relationship with Jesus and develop authentic friendships. A full list of groups will be posted on our website and social media. Maybe you need to take some time to care for your soul and come alongside others who can help you form some new habits? CONNECT GROUPS CONNECT GROUPS are the heartbeat of our community, where you can develop meaningful relationships with other people at your own pace. The groups of 8-12 adults meet within people’s homes or social venues across the town for 3 months at a time, with an ‘open month’ in between. During the open months (January, May and September) there are other activities and short training courses available for the whole church, that we call ‘Equip’. We know there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to connect groups, so we have developed three kinds of groups for you to choose from, so you can find something that best fits you.

To get started, visit the 'Community' section on our website (link below) and choose a group you think might be a good fit for you. Most groups require a sign up to join, once you have signed up, you will then be contacted by email to confirm your place and details of the group. Y ou may be part of more than one group so long as it does not affect your ability to attend consistently. STUDENTS AT CENTRAL VINEYARD

IF YOU ARE A NEW STUDENT, WELCOME TO NORTHAMPTON, IF YOU ARE RETURNING, WELCOME BACK! We have now moved into our new building, right next to the town centre. We're kicking off the new term with our students lunches! These are a great way to come and meet fellow students as well as some members of the church. We will be serving food and you'll be able to ask any question you might have about the church, Northampton and university life. We love to see students grow in their faith and make living for God a daily rhythm of life. Our student Connect Group meets every Wednesday evening. This is a chance to meet together, pray for one another, study the

Bible together and encourage one another in a discipling community. We will also be organising social events which will give you a break from studying and will be perfect for inviting your course or flat mates along to. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be at the University on Sunday mornings for the Christian Union's 'Church Search' so feel free to come down and meet us there. Or we'd love to see you at Central Vineyard from 10am.

OUR FIRST PHASE WAS ALL ABOUT MAKING OUR PROPERTY SAFE AND FIT FOR PURPOSE AND NOW THAT PROCESS IS NEARING COMPLETION (MARCH 2017), IT IS TIME TO START GATHERING THE RESOURCES FOR THE NEXT PART OF THE JOURNEY. Since we launched our initial 'Home of Our Own' campaign in November 2015. Our goal was to respond to what we believe God is calling us to do as a church family, purchase 42 Sheep Street and start to make it fit for purpose. During that time, we raised the capital needed to purchase the property and began the refurbishment on the upper floor.

A SEASON OF SACRIFICE Over this past year we have collectively given and pledged over £180,000, this has been an amazing achievement for a church of our size and something many outside of our church community have been amazed to see. With this in mind we are aware that attempting to raise another large sum is a big ask (and a big risk) to take. But in this next phase we believe God is calling us to think sacrificially about how we might give and yield our resources to him as part of our journey of discipleship.

WHAT WILL WE DO WITH THE FUNDS? The priority will be the installation of a new heating and ventilation system and the associated infrastructure work that will need to go with it, we have budgeted £50,000 for this work. After that we will begin the auditorium and the café and kitchen, this will be another £40,000. We then need a further £20,000 for the remodelling of WC's and further £15,000 for contingency. We would like to raise a further £12,500 (10%) on top of all this to give away, taking the total funds needed to £137,500.

WILL THIS MEAN EVERYTHING WILL BE COMPLETED? Yes and no, it will mean everything that is needed to make the whole property habitable and functional on both floors will be complete. We will be able to move our Sunday services into the the main Auditorium and have the café and kitchen up and running. This will leave us with some smaller areas that can be left to a later date to be developed over time.

HOW TO GIVE WHERE DO I START? 1. If you consider yourself a member of Central Vineyard and currently give on a regular basis please continue to do so, your continued generosity is what helps the church function. 2. Secondly if you currently don’t give regularly, maybe this is a moment to start doing so? 3. Thirdly we are asking everyone to prayerfully consider how they can respond and invest in Phase 2 of this project?

The reason for writing it down is to give you a goal to pray for and believe God to do through you. Second, our promise to you is a no pressure, no arm twisting campaign. We want this to be a positive experience for anyone who believes in the vision God has given us for this building. With that being said, the pledge is what we each intend to give during a 1, 2 or 3-year period.

These are high quality, fun, interactive sessions which help the children and the leaders get to know Jesus better, and explore the amazing things He invites us to do. We aim to lovingly disciple the children and pray that they will grow in their walk with Jesus – loving Him with all their hearts and following Him every day. If you are looking for a church and have children, then we would love you all to join us.

Each week we create a fun and exciting place for both the children and the team! Our team run children’s groups on Sunday morning for children aged 3 - 11 years and and then every other Sunday afternoon there is a connect group for key stage 2 children.

Vineyard Kids is split in two groups, Mini Grapes, with is for those aged 3 year + and Club V which caters for Children aged 4 - 11 years (those attending primary school). There is also a Connect Group for 7s to 11s that meets every other Sunday afternoon during term time. SPRING 2017 CONNECT | 17

CAR PARK TEAM We want to give our guests a warm welcome and as a member of the car park team, you will be one of the first faces they see!

CAFÉ TEAM Welcoming everyone with fresh coffee and beverages, some tasty snacks and a smile.

COOK A six week programme we deliver to teach basic cookery skills to some of those we serve at the Hub.

EVENING SERVICE Every Sunday we have an evening service at The Good Loaf on Overstone Road with loads of opportunities to serve as we seek to reach out to people exploring faith.

FOOD BANK Our Food Bank feeds 1000’s of people every year. You can help behind the scenes by sorting and organising food donations or up front at the Hub working with those who come to receive a food parcel.

HEALING ON THE STREETS A new team that will be going out into Northampton on Saturdays offering to pray for people they meet.

HOST TEAM Most visitors will form an opinion about us in the first few seconds of walking in the door. Help us make it a good one!

PRAYER Everything we do as a church is underpinned by prayer. Join in regular opportunities to pray as well as extended periods of prayer throughout the year.

SAFE FAMILIES FOR CHILDREN Offering support for local families by providing a short stay for their children with a trustworthy church family in a moment of crisis, full training and DBS clearance will be required.

FACILITIES TEAM THE HUB We need people who can be on site to help make sure everything is in place and ready before people arrive and then making sure everything is cleared away again after they leave.

SOUND & MEDIA The media team are behind most of the videos, images and sounds that you see on a Sunday. If you’re interested in developing your skills in this area, there are lots of ways to get involved.

SOUP RUN The Soup Run team are out in the town centre on Thursday evenings sharing food and hot drinks with the homeless.

STREET CHURCH Street Church is a joint Northampton churches event serving some of the town’s homeless and most vulnerable.

STUDENTS We are passionate about sharing God’s love and serving students at Northampton University.

Is our twice weekly drop in where we welcome a number of people from the community accessing our support services.

VINEYARD KIDS Is the place where our children come to learn about Jesus and have fun on Sunday mornings and lots of events through the year. Find out more on page 16.

WORSHIP COMMUNITY A community of people involved, or interested in getting involved, with worship across the church.

YOUTH Working with our Youth is all about inspiring young people to love God, love others and change the world! It’s a lot of fun and is for all young people in school years 7-13.
