IT CAN BE DAUNTING COMING TO A SUNDAY SERVICE FOR THE FIRST TIME, SO WE AIM TO MAKE YOUR VISIT AS SIMPLE AND ENJOYABLE AS POSSIBLE BY LETTING YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN. Fresh coffee, a selection of teas and other refreshments along with doughnuts and snacks are served from 10am by our Cafe Team. If you have children and youth they can be registered for their groups during this time. The service will start with a time of worship, which lasts for about 30 minutes. Feel free to stand, sing and join in with our worship or you are welcome to sit, relax and enjoy the atmosphere. After worship, the children and youth will go to their groups. We then have a very short break, during which bowls of chocolates are passed round and our offering taken.

This is followed by a few announcements, and a chance to hear some news from the life of the church. Then someone will give a Bible related talk, which is sometime followed by more worship and an opportunity for everyone to respond and receive prayer if they would like to. After the service, please make your way over to the Information Point, where you can chat to some of our team, ask any questions you might have and discover other helpful information. You’ll also have time to grab another drink if you like too.

COMMUNION Communion is held on the first Sunday of each month. We serve an open table, that means if you’re on a journey towards Jesus, you are very welcome to partake! AUTUMN 2016 CONNECT | 05

WORSHIP INTIMACY WITH GOD

WORSHIP, THE ACT OF FREELY GIVING LOVE TO GOD, FORMS AND INFORMS EVERY ACTIVITY OF THE CHRISTIAN’S LIFE.

ORIGINALLY WRITTEN BY

JOHN & CAROL WIMBER FIRST PUBLISHED IN EQUIPPING THE SAINTS USED WITH PERMISSION

MANY PEOPLE WHO VISIT THE VINEYARD REMARK ON THE DEPTH AND RICHNESS OF OUR WORSHIP. THIS HAS NOT COME ABOUT BY CHANCE: WE HAVE A WELLTHOUGHT-OUT PHILOSOPHY THAT GUIDES WHY AND HOW WE WORSHIP GOD. IN THIS ARTICLE I WILL COMMUNICATE THAT PHILOSOPHY.

08 | CONNECT AUTUMN 2016

We began worship with nothing but a sense of calling from the Lord to a deeper relationship with him. Before we started meeting in a small home church setting in 1977, the Holy Spirit had been working in my heart, creating a tremendous hunger for God. One day as I was praying, the word worship appeared in my mind like a newspaper headline. I had never thought much about that word before.

Thus, worship has a two-fold aspect:

communication with God through the WE DON’T basic means of singing and praying, and WORSHIP GOD communication from God through teaching and IN ORDER TO GET preaching the word, prophecy, exhortation, etc. BLESSED, BUT WE We lift him up and exalt him, and as a result are drawn into his presence where he speaks to us.’ ARE BLESSED AS WE WORSHIP HIM. DEFINITION As an evangelical Christian I had always assumed the entire Sunday morning gathering was “worship” – and, in a sense, I was correct. But in a different sense there were particular elements of the service that were especially devoted to worship and not to teaching, announcements, musical presentations, and all the other activities that are part of a typical Sunday morning gathering. After we started to meet in our home gathering, we noticed times during the meeting – usually when we sang – in which I experienced God deeply. We realised that often we would sing about worship yet we never actually worshipped – except when we accidentally stumbled onto intimate songs like “I love you Lord”, and “I lift my voice”. Thus we began to see a difference between songs about Jesus and songs to Jesus. We also noticed that as our individual worship life deepened, when we came together there was a greater hunger toward God. So we learned that what happens when we are alone with the Lord determines how intimate and deep the worship will be when we come together. About that time we realised our worship blessed God, that it was for God alone and not just a vehicle of preparation for the pastor’s sermon. Thus a result of our worshipping and blessing God is being blessed by him. We don’t worship God in order to get blessed, but we are blessed as we worship him. He visits his people with manifestations of the Holy Spirit.

OF WORSHIP

Probably the most significant lesson the early Vineyard learned was that worship is the act of freely giving love to God, it is also an expression of awe, submission, and respect toward God. Our heart’s desire should be to worship God; we have been designed by God for this purpose. If we don’t worship God, we’ll worship something or someone else. But how should we worship God? There are various ways described in the Old and New Testaments:

CONFESSION the acknowledgment of sin and guilt to a holy and righteous God.

THANKSGIVING giving thanks to god for what he has done, specially for his works of creation and salvation.

ADORATION praising God simply for who he is – Lord of the universe. Worship involves not only our thought and intellect, but also our body. Seen through the Bible are such forms of prayer and praise as singing, playing musical instruments, dancing, kneeling, bowing down, lifting hands, and so on. CONTINUED...

CONTINUED...

PHASES IN THE HEART Not only is it helpful to understand why and how we worship God, it is also helpful to understand what happens when we worship God. In the Vineyard we see five basic phases of worship, phases through which leaders attempt to lead the congregation. Understanding these phases is helpful in our experience of God. The first phase is the call to worship, which is a message directed toward the people. It is an invitation to worship. This might be accomplished through a song like, ‘Come let us Worship’ or it may be jubilant, such as through the song, ‘Don’t you Know it’s Time to Praise the Lord?' The underlying thought of the call to worship is ‘Let’s do it; let’s worship now.’ Song selection for the call to worship is quite important, for this sets the tone for the gathering and directs people to God. Is it the first night of a conference when many people may be unfamiliar with the songs and with others in attendance? Or is it the last night, after momentum has been building all week? If this is a Sunday morning worship time, has the church been doing the works of God all week? Or has the church been in the doldrums? If the church has been doing well, Sunday worship rides on the crest of a wave. All these thoughts are reflected in the call to worship. The ideal is that each member of the congregation be conscious of these concerns, and pray that the appropriate tone be set in the call to worship. The second phase is the engagement, which is the electrifying dynamic of connection to God and to each other. Expressions of love, adoration, praise, jubilation, intercession, petition – all the dynamics of prayer are interlocked with worship – come forth from one’s heart. In the engagement phase we praise God for who he is through music as well as prayer.

10 | CONNECT AUTUMN 2016

An individual may have moments like these in his or her private worship at home, but when the church comes together the manifest presence of God is magnified and multiplied. As we move further in the engagement phase, we move more and more into loving and intimate language. Being in God’s presence excites our heart and minds and we want to praise him for the deeds he has done, for how he has moved in history, for his character and attributes. Jubilation is that heart swell within us in which we want to exalt him. The heart of worship is to be united with our Creator and with the church universal and historic. Remember, worship is going on all the time in heaven, and when we worship we are joining that which is already happening, what has been called the communion of saints. Thus there is a powerful corporate dynamic.

THE HEART OF WORSHIP IS TO BE UNITED WITH OUR CREATOR AND WITH THE CHURCH UNIVERSAL AND HISTORIC. Often this intimacy causes us to meditate, even as we are singing, on our relationship with the Lord. God might call to our mind disharmony or failure in our life, thus confession of sin is involved. Tears may flow as we see our disharmony but his harmony; our limitations but his unlimited possibilities. This phase in which we have been wakened to his presence is called expression. Expression then moves to a zenith, a climatic point, where we have expressed what is in our hearts and minds and bodies, and now it is time to wait for God to respond. Stop talking and wait for him to speak, to move. I call this, the fourth phase, visitation: The almighty God visits his people.

This visitation is a by product of worship. We don’t worship in order to gain his presence. He is worthy to be worshipped whether or not he visits us. But God ‘dwells in the praises of his people’. So we should always come to worship prepared for an audience with the King. And we should expect the Spirit of God to work among us. He moves in different ways- sometimes for salvation, sometimes for deliverances, sometimes for sanctification or healings. God also visits us through he prophetic gifts.

GENEROSITY The fifth phase of worship is the giving of substance. The church knows so little about giving, yet the Bible exhorts us to give to God. It is pathetic to see people preparing for ministry who don’t know how to give. That is like an athlete entering a race, yet he doesn’t know how to run. If we haven’t learned to give money, we haven’t learned anything. Ministry is a life of giving. We give our whole life; God should have ownership

of everything. Remember, whatever we give God control of he can multiply and bless, not so we can amass goods, but so we can be more involved in his enterprise. Whatever I need to give, God inevitably first calls me to give it when I don’t have any of it – whether it is money, love, hospitality, or information. Whatever God wants to give through us he first has to do to us. We are the first partakers of the fruit. But we are not to eat the seed, we are to sow it, to give it away. The underlying premise is that whatever we are is multiplied, for good or for bad. Whatever we have on our tree is what we are going to get in our orchard. As we experience these phases of worship we experience intimacy with God, the highest and most fulfilling calling men and women may know. ORIGINALLY WRITTEN BY

COMMUNITYATCV

CONNECT GROUPS CONNECT GROUPS are the heartbeat of our community, where you can develop meaningful relationships with other people at your own pace. The groups of 8-12 adults meet within people’s homes or social venues across the town for 3 months at a time, with an ‘open month’ in between. During the open months (January, May and September) there are other activities and short training courses available for the whole church, that we call ‘Equip’. We know there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to connect groups, so we have developed three kinds of groups for you to choose from, so you can find something that best fits you.

To get started, visit the 'Community' section on our website (link below) and choose a group you think might be a good fit for you. Most groups require a sign up to join, once you have signed up, you will then be contacted by email to confirm your place and details of the group. Y ou may be part of more than one group so long as it does not affect your ability to attend consistently. If you would like to find out more about our Connect Groups or Huddles, please speak to Pete & Anya Willis or visit:

OF OUR OWN

O UR P ROG RE SS NOW WE'VE PURCHASED THE BUILDING THE REFURBISHMENT WORK HAS STARTED. THE PLAN IS TO CARRY OUT THE WORK IN THREE PHASES PHASE 1

PHASE 2

PHASE 3

The target is to get the upper floor finished to specification. This includes removing all of the old fixtures and fittings and moving things like light switches and sockets. We have taken the old ceiling down in the main room and the walls are being prepared for decorating. We are installing a new kitchen by subdividing the existing kitchen and creating a third meeting room at the same time. We have started work on the landing area and front entrance. This involves replacing the entrance doors, decorating, installing a new ceiling and carpeting throughout.

In order to begin this phase, we need to have enough funds to install a new Heating and Ventilation system, throughout the building.

Phase 3 will be focused on the lower floor, constructing the 300 seater auditorium and the new cafe and kitchen area.

UPPER FLOOR

14 | CONNECT AUTUMN 2016

HEATING & VENTILATION

This will give us a very efficient way to both supply and extract air throughout the building, keeping air fresh and at a consistent temperature all year round. This is a significant investment and will require at least ÂŁ50,000 in order to begin work and see it through to completion.

LOWER FLOOR & CAFE

We also need to make an investment in some new AV equipment and construct a new media booth and install the sound equipment. We also want to invest in remodelling all the WC's throughout the building in this phase. Once completed Sunday services and projects can move to the lower level.

YOU CAN HELP SUPPORT THIS PROJECT FINANCIALLY AND YOU CAN DIRECT WHAT YOU GIVE IN A FEW DIFFERENT WAYS...

REFURBISHMENTS

CHAIR APPEAL

DEBT FREE

In order to complete this project we estimate we need to raise in the region of £100,000 - this will go towards refurbishments, the installation of the heating and ventilation, remodelling the toilets and the purchase of new equipment. If you would like to give to the general refurbishments and/ or our new Heating and Ventilation system, then please get in touch or visit the building website.

We need to buy at least 300 stackable, yet comfortable chairs for the main worship space and the various meeting rooms we will be creating. We already have 150, you can help us buy the next 150 with a £35 donation. This will buy a chair for yourself and one for someone else. To donate to the chair appeal please visit the website (see link below) or give via direct transfer, with the reference CHAIRS.

Although we are purchasing this building with a mortgage and the monthly repayments are within our existing budget, our goal would be to pay off the £350,000 borrowed as quickly as we possibly can, so we can operate as a church debt-free.

GOD'S BIG STORY IS THE FRAMEWORK WE USE TO TEACH THE BIBLE IN A RELEVANT WAY FOR ALL OUR CHILDREN AS WE SEEK TO EQUIP THEM IN THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES. It’s simply way of breaking the gospel into 6 sections. GOD MADE US TO LOVE

PEOPLE WALKED AWAY FROM GOD AND LOVE WAS BROKEN GOD HAS A PLAN AND SENT JESUS TO MAKE A WAY FOR US TO COME BACK TO HIM JESUS DID AMAZING THINGS IN THE WORLD AND WE CAN DO AMAZING THINGS TOO

GOD SENT THE HOLY SPIRIT TO HELP US GOD’S PROMISE TO US IS THAT ONE DAY EVERYTHING WILL BE AS GOD FIRST INTENDED IT TO BE

Each week we create a space where our children can come and share the everyday situations they are facing. We then help them to put those situations into God’s Big Story. 16 | CONNECT AUTUMN AUTUMN2016 2016

IT LOOKS A BIT LIKE THIS We invite the children to take part in activities that help them to explore their own lives and make sense of the things that happen. Maybe one of them has a loved one who is sick and needs God’s healing. We look at the reason that there is pain and suffering in the world is because people walked away from God and love was broken; bad things entered the world. Our response in our lives is to live as Jesus did; we can call upon God in our times of need and ask for the Holy spirit to help us. We may write a prayer for the person and peg it on our prayer washing line. We affirm the children with verses from the Bible that help the children to see what God has to say to us about any given situation we face. We want the children to understand that the bible is a living word where God can speak directly to them through the verses they read. Our aim is that all the children will grow in confidence of God’s word and see He has a hand on their lives. No matter what our children are facing we are creating a safe place for the children to 'come as they are' and leave better equipped to face their many challenging situations of life.
