STAGING A HOME may not seem like a big deal, but there’s actually good reason to spend time on this part of selling your home. A clean, well-lit and coordinated room makes all the difference, whether it’s viewed at an open house or online. This is because the potential buyer is not spending time on what the room is now, but what the room could become.
SIMPLIFY SURFACES
While you’re cleaning, take care to remove all the clutter that takes up space on shelves, cupboards and other surfaces. Items like phones and large décor pieces can stay; they may even help potential buyers see the possibilities better. Less is more, however. Less clutter means more space to see the room. You’d be surprised how mirrors affect a room. Especially if the room is small, place a mirror on the wall. The reflective quality gives the illusion of more space, as well as light. The frame adds style to the space.
DEEP CLEAN WHITES
By now, you’ve got to be noticing a trend. Bright and white, right? Dark and gothic is so 17th century. If you have any white surfaces, appliances, items, etc., - clean them! White reflects a lot of light, whereas black or other dark colours absorb light. Showcasing your whites at their cleanest not only allows them to sparkle, but they allow nearby pieces to appear brighter. Extra tip – vinegar is a cheap, effective way to clean out crud and stains on white. Mix it with baking soda if you’ve got a really tough stain. The reaction lifts and dissolves whatever gets swept in with it.

Delight the other senses as people walk through your home, but keep it subtle. Think fresh, not perfume. Flowers are the best option, since you can colour co-ordinate them too. As you may recall from the last issue, shopping locally has a profound impact on the local economy by the consumer. This time around, let’s delve further into local businesses. While the impact does start with the consumer, it’s the momentum from businesses in the community that turnout the greatest results. Often, it’s said that small businesses are the backbone of the economy. This is true, but it’s important to understand why. The back itself is divided into small bones called vertebrae, which are all held together by fibrous bands called ligaments1. In a similar fashion, communities are divided into small structures called small businesses, which are all held together by people. These backbones, or communities, support the body of the national economy. Without a healthy backbone, the body suffers. Likewise, without thriving small businesses across the country, Canada’s economy suffers. What exactly is it about small businesses that make them so integral?
IT’S THEIR ABILITY TO ADAPT.
When certain needs arise due to seasons, crises, weather, etc., small businesses are the first to supply those needs. They have a closer relationship with consumers, and are dependent upon them for success. Since they are based in the same community, they need to take care of those issues as well. This relationship works both ways, and is the reason why these businesses stay afloat during tough financial times.
IT’S THEIR WORKFORCE.
Small businesses employ local people. As the business grows, more people are needed. More people come into the community to work, and likewise to buy goods. The cycle continues, growing each time.
IT’S THEIR TAX CONTRIBUTION.
We all pay property taxes, but during profitable times, businesses pay higher property taxes. These taxes go to local services, facilities and infrastructure. For example, in Yorkton property taxes go towards the maintenance of our fire hall, police services, the Gallagher Centre, the Business Improvement District and road maintenance2. And let’s be serious, we really needed that money to go into our roads this year.

IT’S THEIR INNOVATION AND COMPETITIVE NATURE.
Due to their close relationship with consumers and their competition with large corporations, small businesses are always trying new ways to provide people with what they want, from supplying to advertising. They do this to compete with big box stores and online services which are able to cheaply produce goods and ship them globally. Local businesses have to do what they can to stand out and survive. The greatest example of business impact in our piece of the parkland has to be the story of George Morris, founder of Morris Industries. In 1973, the Morris factory in Yorkton more than doubled its size in order to accommodate its work expansion. This meant more jobs were created in town. “To celebrate the doubling of the factory, and to demonstrate to Yorkton the impact of the company payroll, the 300 employees received their bi-weekly pay in $2 bills, 33,000 of them, two days before the celebrations3.”
Before toonies were in circulation, two dollar bills were. However, on the prairies, they were a rare sight. The bank note was often regarded as “funny money” or “Moose Jaw Money4” Morris was aware of this, and decided to use the money as a medium to demonstrate how much impact a Yorkton company has. For weeks upon weeks after this one demonstrative payroll, two dollar bills were used everywhere – from paying bills to leisurely shopping. Morris Industries was an asset to the community, an integral vertebra in the backbone of its community. These days, businesses in town demonstrate their impact differently. Donating to charitable causes and supporting other businesses is the most popular method, a technique appreciated by everyone involved. Everyone is strengthened, not just the company’s bottom line. That’s how a community succeeds.

A golf tournament in the parkland once existed to bring people together for these reasons. It was called the Labatt’s Blue Owl Tournament. As it gained popularity, the tournament was refined into the Yorkton’s Men’s Open. With the name came more reasons to take part competitively, such as championship flights and actual trophies. Organizers wanted to be sure the event was still inclusive for everyone, however, so they went through another name change. Going back to their original roots, the tournament was named The Blue Owl once again. It’s been five years since the Blue Owl Golf Tournament took place. It will be revived this fall at Deer Park Municipal Golf Course, and will be sponsored by Mark’s. Everyone, including those new to the sport, is invited to come out for a weekend of sun, green and friends.
Friday, September 6 is registration night. Golfers are encouraged to stick around for the “Beef on a Bun” supper, as well as watch a horse race. The night serves to house the affable nature of prairie golfers; a great reminder that the sport is more about its ability to bring people together, rather than it being about winning. Saturday, September 6 at 8:00 am is when the tournament begins. There will be 8 flights, where the top four in each flight can win prizes. There will also be prizes for the “Near Pin” and “Hole-in-one” contests. If golfers aren’t up to playing competitively in the champion flight and first flight, they are welcome to play both Saturday and Sunday in foursomes. Sunday afternoon will mark the closing of the tournament, with the Mark’s Blue Owl Trophy and other prizes awarded at 3:00 pm. All money raised will go towards the construction of the new #7 green. Mark’s proudly sponsors events dedicated to connecting the community, this tournament being no exception. An exhibition of black and white photography by Vera Saltzman from Fort Qu’Appelle called O Human Child takes a fresh look at growing up in rural Saskatchewan. To commemorate an iconic prairie novel, Who Has Seen The Wind, this selection of 18 portraits presents the lives of children in today’s world in contrast to the world of W.O.
