Consumer spending is the driving force in our economy. Think about all the labour and materials that are required in order to produce, distribute and sell the goods and services we use on a daily basis. Every time we make a transaction, we complete a cycle. The shelf empties, so retailers order more. Orders are sent to producers, who utilize resources to manufacture products. The products are given to distributors, who ship the products out to wholesalers or directly to retailers. Retailers stock the shelves with these products, and we buy again. The profit gives employees a wage, gives resources sustainability and gives businesses maintenance. Now think about how many retailers are in Yorkton alone, and you begin to see the importance of our local economy.
Online retailers have the benefit of global reach without store costs. Without the need to maintain one or more physical locations, and the need to ensure product quality at each distribution step, these businesses can offer customers deep discounts on massed produced goods from anywhere in the world. Take the booming popularity of Wish.com for example. Manufacturers from China sell and ship offbrand products directly to users through this platform. The estimated profit from 2015 alone was “in the single digit billions3,” according to CEO Peter Szulczewski. Since then, this Amazon.com competitor has expanded its growth; the lure of such cheap goods are too irresistible to pass up for the majority of working class people.
Let’s not leave this to the imagination anymore. The latest information released from the Retail Council of Canada and Statistics Canada indicated that Saskatchewan’s total amount of retail sales in 2018 was $19,509,038,000.1 A comparison of December 2017’s sales vs. December 2018’s sales show a 3.18% decline2. Conversely, provinces with higher populations are seeing small amounts of growth in sales. Saskatchewan’s decline is indicative of a problem that retailers are experiencing in the smaller markets: online shopping.
The money we spend on sites like Wish isn’t staying in Canada, let alone our own communities. This money is building more factories in China, where work conditions and wages aren’t exactly liveable. Employees only range in the few dozen, since websites don’t take heavy manpower to maintain. Issues are bound to arise, but can’t be dealt with on a focused level because of low employment. Thus, responsibility is placed on the consumer, not the business selling the product. What’s the point of selling a product if it doesn’t work? Where should the accountability lie? Who is making what I buy? Anonymous business platforms like these are becoming the new reality of retail, an evolution not beneficial to the consumer or resources.
Contrary to popular opinion, online shopping is not killing retail. Retail is actually evolving to incorporate online shopping, broadening its base and reach. What is happening, however, is that online shopping is slowly strangling local economy.

our community stay on their feet. The larger donations come from businesses wanting to give back. This relationship with our retailers also works the other way. A person from Yorkton can influence the type and quantity of inventory within a Yorkton business. The same influence cannot be said for a corporate or online business.

Back at home, our communities are making less profit. When businesses here make less profit, more people have to be laid off in order to keep the company alive. What will happen in the years to come if this continues to be the trend? The next generation of workers in our community will not have job opportunities. How many of them will be able to work for tech-based retail companies? How many of them will be our kids without jobs? Or, what about our community services? The Kinsmen Club of Yorkton, The Yorkton Lions Club, The Soup Haven and so many more organizations in the city depend upon donations to help people in
In this fast paced market, what are we to do? The solution to this problem is simple for both the consumer and our local retailers. Consumers must be mindful of their purchases; shopping local is paramount. Know where your product comes from. Local profit stays local. For retailers, they need to step into the digital age. Physical stores here may not have the space or capital to hold inventory, but the internet does. Offering a local, online option ensures that our community has access to the same products larger cities with larger populations do. It is less likely that a member of our community would spend their money out of town, out of province and out of country if it was offered in Yorkton for a fair price. Online demand also supplies a better record of what our city trends are and will become; a valuable source of information for retailers. Go local. It’s easier than you think.

HOME MAINTENANCE budgeting for repairs the smart way words

If you are wondering what it costs to maintain a home, you are not alone. The cost of home ownership does not stop after closing fees. Many first time home buyers make the mistake of settling in without preparing a plan to maintain their new investment.
THE GENERAL RULE
Skip the shock and financial stress by preparing a budget ahead of time. Set aside one percent of your property’s purchase price each year into a savings reserved for home. If the home your purchased isn’t in great shape, consider increasing that to three percent. For example, if you purchased a property for $250,000, you should set aside $2,500. Now, this doesn’t mean you will be spending this amount every year on repairs. It’s just the money you are setting aside for a leaky day. There are factors which can cause negative impacts to your investment, so you should add an additional ten percent each to your yearly budget to cover them.
LOCATION
A home in a valley has different needs than a house on a hill. A home in the city is different than a home in a suburb. Consider where you live. Many areas of Yorkton are quite low. When flash flooding happens, the homes affected the most are homes in these low areas. As such, these homes then require a higher amount of repair.
ENVIRONMENT
This one tends to go hand in hand with location, but can end up being a separate cost sometimes. If your home is situated in places with extreme weather conditions, you should compensate for the specific stress on your home. The biting chill of winters here affects our homes differently than the temperate climate of our southern neighbours. Alternatively, the heavy rains down south affect their homes more so than the rains we tend to have here. Each environment has its own expense.
OVERALL CONDITION
TYPE
Consider the type of your property. If you own a home, your responsibility level is higher than that of a duplex or condo. Therefore, your maintenance cost will be higher.
This refers to how well the home has been maintained, by both you and the previous owners. If some aspects of the house have been neglected in this regard, your maintenance cost will be higher.
AGE
BREAKING IT DOWN
If your home is older, you may need to replace and repair more fixtures. The wear and tear on fixtures and structure require repair to keep you and your home safe. Older homes simply require a higher maintenance budget.

Since this home has been well maintained, type, condition and age won’t be adversely affecting you. Homes in this part of town are higher, so flooding isn’t an issue. The hail damage on the back wall tells you that the environment affects homes in this location differently since you’re higher and on the outskirts. Location and environment are working hand in hand in this case, so only add ten percent.
Base yearly budget x additional costs = Total additional savings $2,500.00 x 0.10 = $250.00 Additional savings + base yearly budget = Total budget $250.00 + $2,500.00 = $2,750.00 Saving this much each year might seem daunting, but there are things you can do throughout the year to help out, such as conserving the energy used in your house, doing projects yourself and using credit wisely. Be prepared for unexpected surprises and routine repair costs by creating a budget ahead of time. Budget creation for your home helps to better budget for your next recreational adventure too!
Here’s an example to show you how the math is done. The $250,000 home you bought in the Southeast corner of Yorkton was built 35 years ago and is well maintained, but has some hail damage on the back exterior.

GODFREY DEAN ART GALLERY
Each spring Godfrey Dean Art Gallery sends out the call to everyone in our region: Bring Us Your Art! From the entires we create the Landscape and Memory exhibition, featuring local artists of all ages from Roblin and Russell in Manitoba west to Wynyard, and from Esterhazy up to Preeceville, Landscape and Memory is a celebration of community creativity. Artists and makers of all skill levels, ages and experience take part, and this year once again includes proud and enthusiastic school children, great grandmothers and grandfathers, teenagers, youth and adults. It truly is an all ages showcase. Many of the pieces on display are available for sale. This is a great opportunity to pick up some new artwork for your home, or get that special gift for someone to remember our beautiful prairie landscape. Along with beautiful fabric pieces, some impressive fine craft, and very attractive photography, painting and drawing remain as popular as ever. Large and colourful, small and detailed, bold graphics or subtle shading, the care and the love that everyone puts into their creations is vividly apparent.
