Studio Brief :
Contemporary Crafts, globally as well as in India is bringing a new wave of creating material culture, not only in the field of traditional Indian crafts but also within design realm. There are myriad of design and craft practices, which are amalgamating the traditional wisdom of craftspeople and the power of handmade with emerging technologies and fusing it with design thinking. This studio was an attempt to bring this new wave of craft-design-technology collaboration to the public sphere through an immersive exhibition. This exhibition design studio explored such practices, their products and their approaches & came up with an exhibition that tried to challenge the traditional notion of the field of craft as well as its public display.

Studio Learning Outcomes: • Conducted a preliminary research and categorize various contemporary craft objects into different typologies. • Learned the basics of exhibition design & brief study of color themes , Display System , Curation , Circulation, Exhibition graphics through museum case studies & visits in the city of Ahmedabad , Mumbai & Delhi. • Developed an exhibition theme and generate a design position based on the theme. • Formulated a narrative for a curatorial sequence through the process of storytelling. • Designed a spatial organization of the exhibition spaces in reference to context and exhibits. • Developed exhibition graphics & Signage system.
Visual-Spatial Narrative
a sequential abstract representation of various key spatial articulation of exhibition spaces and its exhibits coupled with personal experiences. Field visits to various museums in Ahmedabad, Delhi and Mumbai were crucial in understanding various parameters of exhibition design - from curatorial to the design realm.
Site Introduction Deep in the street of Sankheri Sheri in the old city of Ahmedabad stands the 150 year old heritage haveli “Deewanji Ni Haveli “ The haveli is restored & now reimagined as a heritage hotel . It consist of 3 floors , 2 courtyards , terrace & balconies , an underground water tank & extremely carved wooden doors , windows . Highly ornamented wooden carvings are also observed throughout on the front façade of the haveli.
Site Interpretation
The idea of site visit is not only to understand the site but also to experience and interpret the experience (or series of experiences) and represent them in form of small visual diagrams and narrative text.
