Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Counsellor Self-Care
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Counsellor Self-Care
Overview: How often do you find yourself angry, anxious or confused due to the multifaceted demands, challenges and desires of living and working in our fast-paced world? How often do you check your brain at the door as you function on autopilot, unaware of your life passing by? If you experience either or both these phenomena on a regular basis, it is likely that you are suffering from excessive stress which you may not be aware of since your response has become habitual. These behaviours typically become chronic resulting in anxiety, depression, and, eventually, burnout and ever poorer general health outcomes. MBSR is an interpretation of this ancient practice expressed in terms of modern day life. It is represented as the teaching of formal practice, “Meditation”, and informal practice, “Awareness and Presence”, as we engage in our life moment by moment. Brain changes, a phenomenon known as neuroplasticity, can be initiated in the brains of even novice meditators.
7
As little as 10 minutes of meditation, five days a week for four weeks has been shown to lower symptoms of burnout, enhance relaxation and improve life satisfaction. Mindfulness creates a space, a pause in which you can respond considerately to situations, rather than reacting thoughtlessly. Through the use of mind/body techniques, you can begin to relate to the stress in life differently in ways that allow for more creative solutions and possibilities. Mindfulness is a change in your way of being and consequently will be a help to you in the workplace. You can apply mindfulness to not only enhance your own healthy outlook but you can also use it to support your clients in more effectively managing the stress and anxiety that accompany employment transitions.
In this seminar, you will learn and have the opportunity to practice techniques to assist you with: • Stress Reduction Brain scans taken before and after MBSR revealed decreased grey matter in the amygdala-the part of the brain that triggers the fight-or-flight response and increased density in the left pre-frontal cortex, where our executive functions reside Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Counsellor Self-Care
• Empathy Having the capacity to step into someone else’s shoes by acknowledging and understanding his or her perspective is essential to developing and maintaining healthy and productive working relationships
• Decision Making Mindfulness meditation training seems to improve decision making by minimizing or removing emotional components, such as desired outcomes, that may cloud clearer thinking
• Self-Awareness Mindfulness meditation was shown to lead to an increase in the part of the brain associated with selfawarenes
• Positive Emotions Both good and bad moods move quickly throughout an organization, though bad moods travel faster
• Attendance Fewer sick days

When a major change in interior commercial and institutional architecture began to evolve in the 1970s Roy recognized an opportunity and opened a manufacturing company to design and manufacture leading-edge decorative acoustical products to satisfy this market. In their second year of existence the company was featured in the cover story of Architectural Digest which facilitated their entry into the global marketplace. Over the previous 30 years Roy had become acquainted with the fundamentals of mindfulness as a member of a program to rehabilitate addictive behaviour, not only his own but others he came into contact with over the years. This experience encouraged him to explore more deeply the practice of mindfulness and meditation. Roy began studying meditation techniques in 1993, locally and in 1998 he began his association with the Centre for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. With the encouragement of Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of the MBSR program, Roy created Toronto MBSR Workshops in1999 as a selfregistering, non-clinical practice and has been conducting mindfulness workshops since that time. To date he has conducted more than 100 eight-week workshops.
