Our Mission The Office of Residential Life is an integral part of the educational experience at the University of Hartford. We collaborate with students and the campus community to provide an environment that is conducive to student success. We provide students with opportunities for relationship building and self-advocacy while promoting civic engagement and individual responsibility within a community context.

Our Vision We endeavor to be a nationally recognized residential life program noted for well-trained, professionally active, and student-centered staff. We will be a program that utilizes current technological resources, while providing superior customer service and streamlined administrative processes. Through our commitment to education, accountability, and diversity, we will partner with students and families to build an enriching residential experience.

Resident Director Position The Resident Director (RD) is a professional, full-time, 12 month live-in member of the Office of Residential Life who reports to the Assistant Director of Residential Life for Community Development. The RD is responsible for the on-site management and overall supervision of a cluster of residential suites or apartments totaling between 200 and 1000 students. The RD directly supervises 8 to 16 Resident Assistants (RAs). The RD shares on-call duty responsibilities for the residential campus totaling approximately 3,500 students. Evening and weekend commitments are required.

Minimum Qualifications:          

A Bachelor’s degree is required. Previous residential life/housing experience. Knowledge of management operations and fiscal budget-related matters. Understanding of student development theories. Demonstrated ability to supervise paraprofessional staff. The ability to relate positively and with appropriate boundaries to traditional college-age students. Excellent administrative skills and strong organizational and time management skills. Experience with emergency response and decision making. Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff. Mediation, intervention, and problem solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:   

Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Counseling or other related field. Two years experience managing an apartment community or residence hall. Demonstrated involvement with regional or national housing and student affairs organizations.

Professional Staff Involvement Professional development is a key component of the RD position at the University of Hartford. Our residential life staff is actively involved in a variety of committees, projects, and programs throughout the campus that allow them a wide array of experiences. Outside of the University community, our staff is highly involved and serve in a variety of professional leadership positions. Opportunities to get involved while at Hartford are truly endless. Staff Development The Office of Residential Life at the University of Hartford is committed to providing each of our professional Resident Directors a unique and rewarding experience that is not only challenging, but also highly developmental. Resident Directors actively participate in developing their own individualized developmental plan based on the departments Resident Director staff development curriculum. This curriculum is grounded in student development theory, professional competencies, CAS standards, best practices, and more to ensure our RDs are receiving the best experience possible. Our comprehensive orientation and training programs, job responsibilities, and expectations recognize and attempt to address the professional development and discernment of our new and returning Resident Directors. Professional development will be provided through:          

Resident Assistant Program 

Employ 85 Resident Assistants each year

Over 77% of RAs have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. 44% hold a 3.5 GPA or higher. The RA staff average cumulative GPA is 3.4 (RA position require a 2.5 GPA).

The University of Hartford undergraduate minority representation is 28%, while the RAs are 33%.

Newly hired RAs participate in 2 credit leadership course titled EDG 310: Residential Education and the College Student during their first semester of employment.

Selectivity of the position has increased over the years. This year we received 120 new applications and 64 reappointment applications for 85 positions.

Each staff has one Mentor Resident Assistant who serves as the right hand person to his or her Resident Director
