Olivier Lecocq
This summer, the main event in Paris will be a huge exhibition in honour of the house of Christian Dior’s 70th anniversary. Its founder’s entire universe will be on display, not to mention that of his successors like Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, and most recently, Maria Grazia Chiuri. The show will include over 300 dresses, but also paintings, furniture, and artwork, for Monsieur Dior loved great art and museums on top of being passionate about fashion.
Why not plan a stop at the most exclusive spa in Paris as you wander around the capital? Olivier Lecocq has become a master of wellness: his 20 years of experience have led him to create an intimate location that feels like a luxury hotel, complete with essential oils he created himself. His goal: to express his vision down to the slightest detail. A unique experience that combines calm, luxury, and delight.

Christy Coleman
How did it all start? It all started back on a rural farm in Willow, Oklahoma when I was around 12 years old. I would sit in the wheat track reading Vogue magazine while I waited for the combines [harvesters] to fill the truck so we could drive to the grain elevator. I would slowly go through the pages, and they would take me on a photographic journey. It was here I began visualizing myself in the world of fashion and beauty.
“
THE ONLY RULE I LIVEby ISto GETTHAT FOUNDATION RIGHT AND BLEND,AFTER THATcreativity & FREEDOM SHOULDTAKE OVER.
“
Every Sunday after church my Mother would allow me to charge one beauty product [to her tab] at the local pharmacy, adding to my tackle box of products. Mostly I chose those credited on the [Vogue] covers that I had been reading. I also collected any fashion and beauty books I could find. [American make-up artist] Way Bandy soon became my obsession, so began the days of painting one half of my face one way and the other another. I became hooked on the transformation, becoming an everyday beauty junkie. My mother and father were incredibly creative – my mother encouraged my love for dreaming and my father showed me any idea is possible.
How long have you been a makeup artist, and how did you get your start in the beauty industry? Falling in love with makeup at such a young age showed me the importance of good skin, as it acts as a canvas for applying makeup. I chose to graduate High School early, move to Dallas, and receive my license as an aesthetician. I moved back to my hometown and opened my own skincare boutique at the age of 18 where I did facials and makeovers. I made a lot of my own products and carried the Trucco Cosmetic line from Sebastian in my studio. I soon realized I had to follow my dream [of living] in NYC to discover the fashion world so I began plotting my journey.

BEAUTYCOUNTER RETRACTABLE FOUNDATION BRUSH $43
...HEALTH IS THE greatest GIFT WE HAVE AND WE MUST honour THAT.
What is one of your all-time career highlights, or a pivotal moment in your career?
Professionally, I would have to say it was meeting Kevyn Aucoin the day of the Perry Ellis fashion show. It was Marc Jacobs’ first collection. Jed Root had chosen me to assist him and of course I had never met him (Kevyn or Marc). Carla Bruni came running backstage late, she took one look at me and my empty chair and sat right down in it. I’ll always have an affinity for her [for] taking a chance on the new girl. That show became one of many days with Kevyn, which ultimately validated my life as an artist. Personally, [a highlight] was my first Vogue job with Grace Coddington in Paris, shooting couture for the March issue with Arthur Elgort. Being in the presence of those clothes and that woman was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget.
What do you love most about makeup?
Everything. Its ability to inspire, to give confidence, the colours, different textures, the packaging. I love all of it. I have built my life around it.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Art, nature, pop culture, fashion, photography, music and of course travel. I would say everything I look at or hear daily ends up inspiring me one way or another – Whether that [be] in colour, texture or innovation.
Who are some of the people that have inspired you throughout your career? Well, hands
down Kevyn Aucoin. However, great editors like Grace Coddington, and a hairdresser named Recine [have inspired me too]. My parents and my dog named Rider.
What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women? To experiment! Makeup is meant to be fun. I find so many women don’t wear any as they are afraid of applying it wrong. The

only rule I live by is to get that foundation right and blend, after that creativity and freedom should take over. When beginning to practice your talent, start with a softer, lighter application as you can always go back and layer for a bolder look.
What is your favourite look to do on clients?
Having equally established a love affair with both fashion and beauty taught me that makeup should enhance all of you. For me, as an artist it all starts with beautiful skin: from there anything is possible. A defined brow, a statement lip or unexpected pops of colour, I love. In the end, I want my client to look [like] the best version of herself while exuding confidence.
What are your favourite Beautycounter products? How do you like to use them? I
have a few but Tint Skin applied with the retractable brush is a game changer. It gives you a perfect flawless finish with ease. The Charcoal Cleansing face Bar to ensure you have the perfect canvas, the Baby Balm as I love to press just a bit on the eyelid to enhance the eyeshadow, or worn alone to catch a pop of light opening up the eye.
What is your favourite spring beauty trend, and what products would you use to achieve this trend? Beautiful skin. The Cleansing Balm and Dew Skin are the two products that will give you just that.
Why do you think it is more and more important to be aware of what we consume, and to start to move towards health-conscious brands like Beautycounter? Because health
is the greatest gift we have and we must honour that. So often we all take this for granted. Asking for cosmetic reform is a no-brainer for me. Beauty is meant to be full of life and every time a product touches our skin it must just that [– infusing life]. My hope is to inspire others to feel the same.

U
mbrian Clay, being one of the earliest known cosmetic ingredients, has been used for therapeutic treatments for centuries; and for the ancient civilization established in Umbria, white clay was believed to possess mystical meaning. Fresh founders Alina Roytberg and Lev Glazman commissioned Rometti, a ceramics workshop based in Umbria, Italy, to create a design that embodies the great history behind the Umbrian clay mask. The soft hue of blue juxtaposed with a shade of sand beige, crowned with an Etruscan figure chosen to represent beauty certainly makes for an artful conception. The earthy palette and Rometti’s signature stripes complete the geometric design inspired by the Umbrian landscape. This collaboration celebrates and honours the brand’s heritage, artisanal spirit and respect for Italy’s green heart.

FRESH UMBRIAN CLAY PURIFYING MASK ($75).
Rometti, the first Italian ceramic workshop to incorporate avant-garde ideas, was founded in 1927. Massimo Monini, the owner, and Jean-Christophe Clair, the artistic director, continuously experiment and exercise their curiosity to create with innovative production techniques. Their unique, handmade objects are created with natural clay pulled from a local quarry whose origin dates back to Roman times; making this a natural partnership, because of Fresh’s similar approach with their mineral-rich clay. Powered by Umbrian Clay, this multi-tasking mask (for all skin types) can be used as a daily deep cleanser, a pore-purifying mask, and a spot treatment. The three-in-one treatment not only contains this “miracle” clay high in mineral content to balance, purify, and clarify the complexion, but it also uses sandalwood oil for its astringent properties, chamomile flower and lavender water to soothe the skin, and olive leaf extract to promote suppleness and protect against free radicals. Twenty-five years after the discovery of this key ingredient in a small picturesque village of Nocera Umbra, the Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask, among the complete Umbrian Clay collection, continues to be an iconic product to keep safe on your top shelf.

Mon Guerlain, a chat with master perfumer
THIERRY WASSER
A tribute to today’s femininity, the iconic house’s new fragrance, Mon Guerlain, is strong, free and sensual with notes of Carla Lavender, Sambac Jasmine, Album Sandalwood and Tahitensis Vanilla. We sat down with master perfumer Thierry Wasser to learn more about the scent, the creative process behind the fragrance, and the woman that now embodies Mon Guerlain. By Mayillah Ezekiel
What essentials go into creating an iconic fragrance like Mon Guerlain? I hope it is going to be iconic, but when I create, I just put my energy, my feelings and my soul into it. I always wish success will be encountered, but sometimes you hit, sometimes you miss. There are no rules. The only thing that makes something become iconic is the acclaim by customers, so I am just waiting to see. Only time will tell us. Tell me where do you get your main source of inspiration? Certainly not in a laboratory, but outside it. To do manufacturing, you have to go all over the world to source your materials. The sourcing is great inspiration because you are on different continents and you meet so many different people with different points of views. It enlarges your scope of vision, feeds your creativity and a lot of ideas come from the field.

THE IDEA behind MON GUERLAIN IS TO celebrate WOMEN, AND THEIR DIFFERENT FACETS...
How did Angelina Jolie come into the Guerlain family, and become involved with Mon Guerlain? The idea behind Mon Guerlain is to celebrate women, and their different facets, which [is the way] Guerlain, as a beauty brand, envisions women. Mon Guerlin was a very clear match with Angelina Jolie. We had seen her commitment and actions around the world, especially with Africa and Asia, which is what we believe in, and what we actually do in those places. She was involved in the bottle choice, the name, the visual, and the film – of course since she’s an actress, but she is also a film director. So the inspiration for the whole atmosphere surrounding the fragrance is a collaboration between Guerlain and Angelina Jolie. I think she is such a strong, passionate human being, that’s why she inspires people to be courageous, bold, and truthful. She’s a woman with a vision, and that’s what Mon Guerlain represents. How long does it take to create a new scent? There are no rules. Sometimes, it can go pretty fast, and sometimes the delivery takes longer. That’s because it’s very difficult to translate a dream in your head, and to make it happen in a bottle. In the case of Mon Guerlain, I have been thinking about it for a good solid three years, and usually, the creative process is twelve months. How did you choose the notes and the ingredients for the scent? It will sound a little weird, but sometimes you smell a raw material like Lavender and it just gives you a feeling. I used to say that flowers spoke to me. It is bizarre to say, but it does trigger an emotion, and for Mon Guerlain, Lavender was the image of truth. If I want to express truth, I pick Lavender. Mon Guerlain, being the portrait of a woman, started with truth, followed by the generosity of Sambac Jasmin, which is a very sumptuous flower. In the South of India, it is worn on a woman’s head. I realized how social that flower was when I saw it was used in temples and in weddings. The women use it for beauty as well as its scent - they even make necklaces out of the flower. So, it is personal, and eventually, people can find their own truth and make it their own. At the end of the day, there is no right and no wrong. This is how I go about designing a fragrance.

An Interview with Etalk‘s Chloe Wilde Photographer Donat Art Director & makeup Mayillah Ezekiel Fashion Editor Sara Roberts
Damn right healthy is hot! Inspired by the reinvention of fitness, wellness and health, Chloe Wilde started a movement to motivate women to be their best selves. Being a mainstay on Canada’s most-watched entertainment program, Etalk, she knows how hard it can be to balance a hectic schedule and a healthy lifestyle. Get to know the multi-talented woman behind

Why is it so important to you to live a healthy lifestyle? I believe that we are given one beautiful
life to live and it is our responsibility to make the most of it, to be the best versions of ourselves and to create positive ripples into the world. We can only achieve that if we are at our optimal place of being, and that starts with health. Living a healthy lifestyle is not easy, but is it ever important. It takes effort, discipline, and humility to realize when you’ve strayed from your goals. The results are unbelievable and affect every aspect of your life; from your mental health, to physical health, sleep, moods, energy levels, confidence… you name it. Make the choice to live a healthy life, make the choice to invest in yourself for now and for the future; I guarantee you will see a difference.
How do you balance your career, travel and a social life with eating well and staying fit? Balancing
everything can be hard sometimes. I’m not going to pretend that I am the queen at the art of “balance", but I try my hardest every single day. It is so important to be kind to yourself when you’re trying to do it all. Of course certain aspects will have to take a backseat while other more pressing matters drive your attention, but there is one area that should never take a back seat and that is self-care. You can’t run the world if you aren’t operating optimally. No matter how long that to-do list gets, remember to take moments for yourself.

...WE ARE GIVEN ONE beautiful LIFE TO LIVE AND IT IS OUR responsibility TO MAKE THE most OF IT, TO BE THE BESTversions OFOURSELVES... Lists are the core of how I try to balance it all. I am old school and write everything down on paper with a pen in hand (and then transcribe it all into my Google calendar, obviously). There is something therapeutic about writing it all down and then prioritizing what needs to be done. As a “yes-person”, I love RSVP’ing to everything. But in the past year or so, I’ve come to realize that it is ok to say no. It is ok not to attend every shindig in town. I promise you, FOMO is not a reason to show up somewhere.

MY BEST DAYS AT Etalk ARE THOSEWHEN I AMfilled WITH PASSION, EXCITEMENT, CONFIDENCE and A SENSEOF CURIOSITY.
With an ever-changing schedule and regular traveling comes the downside of instability in your personal life and lack of routine in your eating and fitness habits. My advice: GET CREATIVE!
When I travel for work I always do a little research before hopping on the plane, finding fun workout opportunities around my hotel. On the food front, eating well can be tricky with a demanding job, which is why it is so important to enjoy cooking and to play in the kitchen. Sometimes I even bring my own food to the airport with me for long travel days! Essentially, there are no excuses if you plan ahead.
Healthy Is Hot - How did it all start?
Healthy Is Hot started as a hashtag four years ago when I left my life as a science student at McGill University and found myself travelling across Canada on a reality show called the “MuchMusic VJ Search” in hopes of winning the top prize and landing a coveted role at Much-Music in downtown Toronto. Being on the road for a month combined with crazy amounts of stress threw me into a downward spiral of unhealthy eating. There was a moment where I realized how bad I was being to my body and decided to take back some control - I went to the gym and used the hashtag #healthyishot for the very first time. Fast forward three years and here we are.

The hashtag has since turned into a digital space online (www.healthyishott.com) and on Instagram (@healthyishott) where we promote body-positivity, self-love, female empowerment and encourage honest discussions on all aspects of health. With a so many women having an “I hate my body” moment every single day, we need a place where we can celebrate each other and help each other stay accountable on our health journeys.
You can catch Chloe Wilde on Etalk, which airs weeknights at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CTV and CTV GO. For the full editorial and interview, visit dresstokillmagazine.com
Tell me about your fitness routine. Whether I am at home or on the road for Etalk, the key to my fitness journey is to keep it ever changing with a variety of workouts. Currently I’m obsessing over a mixture of power yoga, running and HIIT. Each provides me with a very different physical and mental challenge.
As a Reporter for Etalk, you are constantly in front of a camera. Beyond looking great, how do you manage to feel your best? My best days at Etalk are
those when I am filled with passion, excitement, confidence and a sense of curiosity. To set myself up for success, I try to incorporate positive and empowering habits – and it all starts with my morning routine. I need my coffee in the morning, otherwise it is not going to be a good day – trust me you do not want to see me un-caffeinated. Then I walk to work and take that opportunity to express gratitude. It is such a beautiful way to start the day; it reframes your perception of the world through lenses of appreciation. And then throughout the day it’s the simple things that keep me feeling my best, going for walks to stretch my legs and get fresh air, being silly with my co-workers and laughing (a lot), re-fuelling properly and making sure I get to bed at a reasonable hour!

Tracing back the lineage of this exercise method, it was German dancer Lotte Berk who first crafted a ballet-inspired workout by merging her dance conditioning exercises with rehabilitative therapeutic techniques. In 1959, Berk opened the first studio in London, where student Lydia Bach would eventually become a Berk disciple, bringing the ballet barre workout to the American masses in 1971 when she opened the Lotte Berk Method studio in NYC. It was at this studio in the 1980s that Burr Leonard first began teaching and collaborating with Lotte Berk herself, eventually refining and adjusting the workout to launch her own version: The Bar Method. Today there are countless variations and fusion classes created by former dancers and bodywork professionals alike. Most classes meld traditional ballet exercises at the barre to fire up quads and glutes, arm strengthening with light weights along with planks and push-ups on the mat, core strengthening and therapeutic yoga stretches. Placing emphasis on tiny, isometric muscle conditioning, using highrepetition with low weights to build and elongate muscles, it’s a full body workout that delivers that coveted dancer’s silhouette. “The overall result of this approach is a body that is strong at its core, supple and versa-

tile, and defined in a lean and elegant way,” says Jennifer Nichols, a choreographer and dancer, and the creator of The Extension Method. Another benefit is the clarity of mind that comes from joining movement with breath and working through challenging poses that make your legs shake and your heart race. “Dance based training is incredibly vast in its scope,” explains Nichols, “requiring the body to move through an atypical range of motion, using all spatial planes, powering explosively both laterally and vertically, as well as harnessing control and balance in stationary positions.”
Engaging in an expressive art form that nourishes the mind and body can be the most effective way to fully commit to a practice. “When you’re dancing your way through your workout, you forget that you may be tired that day, or stressed,” says Nichols, “you simply become lost in the music and the movement.”

Building her own Framework It’s not easy to sum up three decades of a rich career innovation in just a few lines. I remember Marie Saint Pierre, the young woman with flamboyant hair busying herself during her first fashion event. I think of her early shows; made with pieces of string; no detail left to chance – PERFECTION REIGNED SUPREME from the hair and accessories to the soundtrack, which was always astounding. Today, the name Marie Saint Pierre is synonymous with luxury, elegance, and creativity. Photographer Leda & St. Jacques By Stéphane Leduc
Looking back on your journey – particularly having read Madeleine Goubau’s wonderful book Marie Saint Pierre: en 30 tableaux – it is clear that no matter what challenges or setbacks you face, you are always ready to fight. I have
such a wonderful fan club. I dress exceptional women who put their lives into my hands. There are women who travel around the world wearing Marie Saint Pierre. I’m with them through strategic moments, conferences, job changes, when they receive awards, and walk the red carpet. Now that’s love. It really feeds me and gives me a lot of energy, because it makes me realize that I don’t do this work for nothing. That I don’t just claim that people appreciate me, that there really are people who find a form of well-being in my clothing. Many people tell me I am gentle with women, while fashion is often so restrictive.
You’re one of the few people in Canada who have been able to find the delicate balance between art and business. Was it difficult to achieve? Were there hard choices to make? Life
pushes us to focus on strengths that are sometimes contradictory. Finding the balance between family, and work, having kids—it’s often during these moments that you get to know yourself. It’s interesting to ponder this type of question, which helps us grow, and not within the recipe to please other people. Especially during the moments when everything seems to be going wrong, your collection is too creative for people at that specific time, or what you’re offering isn’t fresh enough. Sometimes, sales people tell me “Marie, you have to stop creating. You need to stay with the pieces

that people love.” Most companies have trouble finding something creative to say, and at Marie Saint Pierre, it’s quite the opposite. There are too many new pieces. However, we were able to develop an identity not only with our look, but with the way our clothes feel. I never get to the end of my stories— someone has to stop me.
I really enjoyed Janice Zolf’s documentary Revealing Marie Saint Pierre, which explores the formidable bond you had with the painter Jean-Paul Riopelle from a very young age. How was this relationship significant? Jean-Paul
and I were very similar. It was the case from the moment we met, even though I was a child. He thought children were turbulent, but the first thing I did was go sit on his lap and start talking to him because I thought he was intriguing. It’s as though we had known each other forever. We were the same: not searching for success, rather, looking for something real. He liked to paint, but didn’t like exhibitions, and I’m the same. I like fashion, but the rest is more of an obligation. Riopelle wasn’t even part of the art curriculum at l’Université de Montréal and I sometimes feel like I’m not part of Montreal’s fashion industry. Even though I am very active, and I am setting things up for the next generation. He always told me I’d find Quebec too small.
97
“
Riopelle would have been very happy to know that you’ve finally opened a boutique in Miami’s Wynwood Art District. It’s a
happy choice for Maison Marie Saint Pierre. We’ve had a wonderful welcome and already feel like a part of the Wynwood family. We’re really becoming an anchor tenant because we are the first luxury boutique to have opened in the neighbourhood. I really wanted to be on the main street where everything started across from Panther Coffee, Joey’s and close to the Wynwood Walls. People wondered what I would do over there, and why I didn’t go to the Design District. I like the energy of the area and I meet a lot of artists: people who have things to say, who have processes, and who are vulnerable—true artists.
Despite the obligations of your profession, and the fashion whirlwind that demands one constantly renew themselves, would you say that you are in a good place in your life?
Completely! I get up in the morning and give thanks. I’m in a good place. My company has grown to a good size. I can allow myself the luxury of having a wonderful team, and I did it by myself, without having grants at arm’s length. We created a framework in Montreal that did not previously exist; a framework that will be very important. Marie Saint Pierre will have a legacy moving forward. We train people, we create workshops, we are doing things that aren’t being done anywhere else in Canada. It’s important to do it while running the company on a daily basis. We created it not because we wanted it, but by necessity, like Cirque du Soleil, which created its own framework. It’s a story we are currently writing about becoming the first luxury house in Canada.
If you had to start over, would you do things differently? One thing is clear: I wouldn’t be in the same field! I’d never do it again. I’d do something else, maybe sculpture.

Rei Kawakubo ’ vision of
COMME DES GARÇONS
The first Monday in May, also known as the night of the MET GALA, has become synonymous with the most thrilling evening in fashion. As an (always lavish) fundraiser, THE MET GALA marks the opening of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibit. Aside from generally boasting the edgiest red carpet of the year, the Gala celebrates a designer who has truly shaped the industry, challenged us to re-think fashion, and has defined an aesthetic like no other. This year, the Gala honoured none other than COMME DES GARÇONS founder and designer, Rei Kawakubo. The Tokyo-based designer has been a consistent force in the fashion industry and is the first living designer since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 to have an entire
exhibit dedicated to her work. 100

R
ei Kawakubo established Comme des Garcons in Tokyo in 1973. Since its Paris fashion week debut in 1981, Comme des Garcons, under Kawakubo’s direction, has been an unmistakable fixture in the industry. Kawakubo’s work has never failed to redefine the ordinary and question the expected with an unconventional take on design. She’s been able to create an aesthetic that boasts unbelievable levels of creativity, elevating her collections to that of artwork. While some may deem particular pieces outlandish, there’s an otherworldly element to her work that can’t be replicated. The Met exhibit is designed to showcase the ways in which Kawakubo’s designs lead us to question conventional standards of fashion and beauty. For decades, her collections have continued to change the landscape of the industry merging fashion and art as one. The exhibit, Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between features approximately 140 pieces from various Comme des Garcons collections dating back to the early 80s up until the
present. Art of the In-Between showcases the ways in which Kawakubo has relentlessly challenged the accepted standards of style, fashion, and beauty. Her use of mixed fabrications, architectural silhouettes, and juxtaposing aesthetics has never failed to push the industry in new directions. Evening wear aside, Kawakubo’s talent for creating an unheard of aesthetic can be seen even in the simpler pieces, never failing to re-evaluate the norm and create the unexpected with what seems like the smallest of details.
Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between will be exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City until September 4th 2017.

This year marked the award’s fourth gala with iconic guests in tow: Iris Apfel, Erdem Moralıoglu, Imran Amed, Jason Wu and Coco Rocha, to list just a few. International DESIGNER OF THE YEAR
ERDEM
Known as the “floral specialist” Erdem Moralioglu’s background is much like one of the intricate blossoms found on one of his flowing gowns. Born in Montreal to a Turkish father and English mother, he earned his BA from Ryerson University in Toronto, and was then quickly off to London to further his studies. After obtaining his Master from the Royal College of Art, Moralioglu went from being an intern at Vivienne Westwood, to working alongside Diane Von Furstenberg in NYC for a brief period after his graduation. He finally returned to London to launch his Ready-to-Wear brand ERDEM in 2005. His reputation for floor-sweeping petal covered gowns is now world renowned. His latest Spring 2017 collection featured lovely varieties of elongated romantic silhouettes, some with diamond clusters peeking from the seams. Exquisitely wrapped models in feminine frills strolled the runway like beautiful packages framed with velvet ribbons. Gracious fabrics accentuated femininity as bold patterns highlighted an underlying sense of boldness. ERDEM is synonymous with versatility and femininity as Morlioglu continues to demonstrate his extraordinary craftsmanship fusing elegance with edginess. Now adding to his list of achievements and celebrity clientele, Erdem Moralioglu is the official 2017 CAFA International designer of the year.

Toronto born sisters Chloé and Parris Gordon, have been on the fashion radar for some time. Both graduates from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, Chloé, the more “tomboyish” sister, studied fashion and younger sister Parris, the more “feminine,” studied metalsmithing and jewellery design. It was obvious that their collaborative future was already written in the stars, and it was of no surprise when the sisters founded their Ready-to-Wear brand Beaufille in 2013. The name for the brand paying reference to their style state of being, literally translates to “handsome girl.” The two embrace their aesthetical differences and find common ground in their love for clean lines and angular cropped flares featured in the SS17 collection. Beaufille combines masculine and feminine elements, as the unique unification of textiles and metalsmithing result in a luxurious artisanal womenswear line. The brand was picked up by Net-aPorter and even had some pieces sold out, bringing Beaufille into the limelight. The sisters master an effortlessly chic style; that kind of nonchalanntess that graces the pages of Vogue. Presented by Coco Rocha and Sylvia Mantella, Chloé and Parris were awarded the Women’s Designers of the year for Beaufille.

DESIGNER OF THE YEAR JENNY BIRD
The self-taught designer grew up in the tiny town of Elora, Ontario. With an intrinsic desire to create, Jenny Bird founded her jewellery line in 2008. After her handbag collection went viral, she quickly expanded to jewellery. Her insatiableness for newness is the driving force behind her creativity resulting in her global acclaim. Bird was inspired by the unattainable and began designing to fill an aesthetic and economic gap creating jewelry that is well crafted and affordable. Her ‘indie-luxe’ style is coveted nationwide. In 2011, she appointed her husband as President and is now selling all over North America. Bird has been nominated for two consecutive CAFA awards and this year brought home the 2017 Accessory Designer of the year.

As a child growing up in Canada, Meghan set her sights on an international life, well aware that if she was to achieve success as a model, she’d have to move elsewhere. After winning a model search hosted by her mother’s agency, without knowing what the future held, Meghan was on her way to supermodel stardom. Craving a fast-paced environment, New York became the prefect fit for her. Living in a foreign complex city, while pursuing success in a highly competitive occupation, a humble yet passionate perspective were paramount. Sitting down with Dress to Kill, Meghan reflects on her accomplishments, her faith, and how balancing life outside of work is principal to her success and wellbeing. By Sylvain Blais
to first ask the photographer what the mood and vibe he/she wants in the photos and go from there. Once the clothes, makeup, and hair happen, the character usually just forms naturally. I try not to overthink anything and just move freely. It really is such a fun and inspiring job.
To represent high-end labels with unparalleled professionalism, power and perfection the way you do, and as the face of a worldwide fashion campaign, requires both raw talent and a tremendous amount of hard work. A lot of people still believe if you’re a pretty woman, modelling is a piece of cake. What does it really take to build a successful modelling career?
I think it takes a lot of patience and faith in yourself and your capabilities. A strong sense of self and being okay in your own skin are also important. At the end of the day, if you love yourself, no one else's opinion of you can change that. That’s true beauty and power.
You were born in Edmonton, Alberta. What was it like growing up in Canada’s sixth largest metropolitan area? Do you still feel a strong connection to your Canadian roots? I am really proud to be Canadian! I enjoyed growing up in Edmonton, and it was a great city for my youth. Though, by the time I got to high school, I knew I didn’t belong anymore. I just had too much curiosity to stay in one place, and I wanted to see what else was out in the world. I still visit Edmonton a couple times a year to see my family. Winters are so cold, and every Christmas I’m reminded what TRUE winter feels like!

Manhattan is the place to be for a promising supermodel betting everything on a career breakthrough, but you’ve got to be able to adapt to the Big Apple’s pace and vibe, too. What do you love most about NYC? Has living here come to define who you are somehow? I love New York City.
It has been my home for 10 years now. I love the people and I love its energy. I love that there is always something to do and something going on. No excuses for being bored here. Living here for so long has definitely shaped me. I think I walk way too fast now! I also will go back to Edmonton and be confused why something isn't open until 11 pm at night (laughs).

to be awarded the 2017 CAFA Model of the Year award. I think if someone would have told 18-year-old Meghan this is what my future would bring, I wouldn't have believed them. I am just so thankful. It’s truly an honour and it was an experience I will never forget.
During the cover story photoshoot, you shared your appreciation for 70’s fashion and the icons from that era that influenced your style and way of life. Can you tell us more about who they are, and what it is about their style that inspires you? One of my favourite ladies of the 60s/70s is actress Tina Aumont. She is one of my favourite icons. I love how she was a mix of feminine, but with a dark edge to her. I just love her beauty.

“
This year you won the prestigious 2017 CAFA Model of the Year award. How do you feel being acknowledged by the Canadian Fashion industry, and what does this award mean to you? It was such a humbling experience
I LIKE TO take CARE OF MYSELF. IF I FEEL GOODFROM THE INSIDE,IT shows ON THE OUTSIDE. LIKE everything IN LIFE, IT WAS A JOURNEY OF FINDING OUT WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN'T. ........ Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Prada and Anna Sui are just a few of the international high-end fashion houses that you work with. How do you manage work pressure and keep healthy doing all of those big productions? Any daily routines? I don't really have any
crazy routines. Routine is very hard in my job because I never know where I will be tomorrow. I just eat healthy, get into nature as much as possible, and meditate.
You are a vegetarian. Did that start along with your modelling career, or have you always been decisive about your nutritional values?
I like to take care of myself. If I feel good from the inside, it shows on the outside. Like everything in life, it was a journey of finding out what works and what doesn't. It's something that's different for everyone. For me, I feel the best when I don't consume animal products and eat mostly plant-based foods.
You’ve worked with a lot of renowned artists in the fashion industry, and some incredible creative minds in general. Who are your favourite creators and artists – either within or outside the industry – and why? Favourite
questions are always so incredibly hard for me to answer. I have worked with so many amazingly talented people. Steven Meisel has been someone that I will forever look up to. He is magic.
Are you close with your family? How do you stay in touch with your busy lifestyle? I
love my family. I stay in touch through technology constantly, because I don't get to see them as much as I would like. My grandparents have an iPad and my brother and I taught them how to FaceTime. They are the best.
What are the five things you’d most like to accomplish in your life? I would like to con-
tinue to travel the world and see more countries. I would like to live in a van and travel around for a few months. I would like to own a small home by the water one day. I would like to spend more time with the people I love, and I would like to create more.
When you are not travelling for work, where do you like to go to unwind? I love to
explore! I have a car and use it for mini day adventures. I love flea markets and vintage stores. I also enjoy being in nature. Just last week my boyfriend and I found a great swimming hole somewhere in between Pennsylvania and NJ!
How would you describe your personal style?
I have 3 moods. Firstly, I love vintage clothing from the 60s/70s. Secondly, I love simplicity and minimalism. White Tee and denim vibes. Thirdly, I will forever love an all black look (never quite shook my goth days). I’ve also been into simple gold jewellery lately.

WONDER WOMEN
From rising stars to seasoned veterans, there’s much to admire about the Canadian female music scene. With equal parts affection and considerable attention, we shine a light on the women whose music inspires us, delights us and, most importantly, push us to be our best selves because
we’ve been energized by their best tunes.

MILK & BONE
Believe it or not, it wasn’t that long ago that Laurence LafondBeaulne, one half of the electropop duo Milk & Bone, worked at a Mile End café in Montreal. Since joining forces with Camille Poliquin to form the band, however, Lafond-Beaulne has never looked back. The ladies’ debut album Little Mourning turned the English-singing pair into internet sensations, quickly becoming one of the top played Canadian artists on Soundcloud. Citing indietronica female-fronted groups Chvrches and Purity Ring as direct influences, the two challenge the confines of their genre by using non-traditional instrumentation on their tracks. We can’t wait to hear what’s next for the duo!
HOT TRACKS:
Tomodachi, Coconut Water, Natalie, New York.
COEUR DE PIRATE
Béatrice Martin - best known around the world as Coeur de Pirate - the French-Canadian chanteuse has been making waves since her debut in 2008. Initially dismissed by critics as being too simplistic, her self-titled record rose to prominence when the single "Ensemble" was used as the backing track to a viral video produced by Francophone photojournalist Francis Vachon. Since then, she has flexed her musical muscles on collaborations with Toronto band Bedouin Soundclash, punk rockers The Bronx, and critics are now singing her praises. HOT TRACKS:
Wicked Games, Comme des Enfants, Oublie-Moi, Mistral Gagnant.
GRIMES When an artist’s music is described as a “sonic rain dance,” you know you’re in for a dance-til-you-drop party on every album. Claire Boucher (stage name Grimes) is a once in a generation Canadian artist that we’ve been passionate about since she broke out on the synthpop music scene in 2010. The dynamic role model does it all. Not only does she write, compose, produce, engineer and edit her own music but she also directs her music videos and (as if that wasn’t enough!) she creates all of her album artwork. It’s no wonder both the music and art world adore her.

CHARLOTTE CARDIN Frank Ocean and Flume may have stolen the headlines, but it’s
Charlotte Cardin who we want to camp out for at Wayhome. The Quebecois stunner first rose to fame as a finalist on TVA’s La Voix but it was her debut EP, Big Boy, that sparked critical attention. Fusing elements of jazz, pop and R&B, Cardin’s candid songs demonstrate an assured musical presence rarely seen in a youthful newcomer. So what’s next for the emerging artist? She recently teased that she’s working on a full-length record to be released sometime next year. HOT TRACKS:
Like It Doesn’t Hurt, Faufile, Big Boy, Les Échardes.
LIGHTS
You’ve got to hand it to Lights (born Valerie Anne Poxleitner) for getting out of the Jian Ghomeshi scandal unscathed with her reputation fully intact. The singer-songwriter had been managed by Ghomeshi for over seven years, and to many their names were intertwined. However, once the news of the ousted broadcaster’s transgressions hit, Lights quickly made it known that she no longer associated with her former manager. Since then, the electropop music superstar has reinvented her image and sound with an exciting foray into a graphic novel cross-promotion for her upcoming album Skin and Earth.
HOT TRACKS:
Up We Go, Toes, Drive My Soul, Same Sea.
FEIST
1, 2, 3, 4, I don’t think we could love her more. Now synonymous with her hit single ‘1234,’ it’s hard to believe that Leslie Feist started her successful career as the lead vocalist in a punk band and then as the backup vocalist for electropunk artist Peaches. After venturing into solo artistry in 1999, she skyrocketed to fame when her aforementioned numeric jingle was used in an iPod commercial, leading to great commercial and critical acclaim. Her follow-up albums Metals and the recent Pleasure display an earthy confidence and showcase why Feist is Canada’s favourite indie darling.
HOT TRACKS:
Pleasure, Any Party, The Bad In Each Other, My Moon My Man.
TOMMY GENESIS
With her hyper-sexual lyrics, Calvin Klein-approved stunning looks, and experimental sound, Tommy Genesis is rap music’s latest It girl. The halfSwedish, half-Tamil Vancouver native first garnered attention as a visual artist but it was her brash lyrics on her debut album World Vision that later earned her the moniker of “fetish rapper” and, most famously, “the internet’s most rebellious underground rap queen.” Personally, we prefer to label the musician a multi-hyphenated icon – a leader in style, in changing the face of rap music in Canada, and a rebellious, uber refreshing gamechanger.
HOT TRACKS:
They Cum They Go, Empty, Hate Demon, Hair Like Water Wavy Like The Sea. 135

MONTREAL
We pre-screened the newest spots and trendiest events to make sure you enjoy the best of what Montreal has to offer this summer! By Marie-Ève Venne Bar George
1440 Drummond
Let’s be real, hotel bars are usually the last place you want to go to enjoy cocktails on a night out in the city. Well, things are about to change thanks to Bar George, freshly opened in the heart of downtown Montreal. Located inside a historic building – and apparently haunted – attached to the hotel Le Mount Stephen, the place has the charm of an old European pub with a round marble bar, stunning high ceilings and old paintings on the wall. The charming decor aside, the main reason why you need to pay a visit to Bar George is to try their killer signature cocktails, like their take on the classic Boulevardier.
Parma Café 1202 Bishop
Finding a place to eat authentic Italian food outside of Little Italy used to be almost impossible, until this cosy cafe opened last year. Serving great lunch options with everything made in-house – yes, even the bread – they make sure you get a real taste of Italy. We strongly recommend Parma Café’s tasty Panini, or one of their perfectly crispy Arancini – decadently delicious risotto balls in a crispy breadcrumb coating (pane in Italian). And make sure you save enough room for a cannolo – or grab one to go: you will thank us later.
Fashion and Design Festival
August 21 to August 26 – Place des Festivals
Taking place every summer in the city, the Fashion and Design Festival is a unique occasion for fashion lovers and insiders to come together to celebrate creativity and culture throughout diverse events and more than 50 fashion shows. The festival is a chance for many Canadian designers to showcase their work and vision to the public, along with being the largest outdoor happening in North America. Make sure you save some time in your schedule for their conferences, which give you privileged access to renowned key players in the fashion industry.
Mandy’s
425 Rue Saint Nicolas
Thanks to its brand new location in Old Montreal, Mandy’s is stepping up its game by adding a healthy breakfast menu along with a wine and beer list put together by Nora Gray’s principal sommelier. With a chic tropical feel and a terrace ready for super sunny days, the Old Montreal location is ready to satisfy all of your cravings with refreshing drinks and tasty dishes.
DTK MEN Event
In April, DTK Men held an event honouring its Spring/Summer Power issue with cover star ANDRE DE GRASSE – the three-time Olympic medal winner who charmed the whole world at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016. The party was held at the swanky, new Lavelle rooftop lounge, where the fashionable and stylish attendees enjoyed the most breathtaking view of the Toronto skyline. The party was a huge success and a great start to a sizzling summer ahead.

DTK CITY
TORONTO Toronto, Canada’s financial capital, should not surprise anyone as a top vacation destination. It has so
much to offer outside the buttoned-up business world of Bay Street. Beaches, markets, art galleries – Toronto is cool, edgy and boasts world-renowned places to eat, sleep, or just hang out during the lazy days of summer. We’ve rounded up some of our favourite spots for your next visit. By Leora Heilbronn & Tori Briana Robinson
Van Cleef & Arpels
Yorkdale Shopping Center, 3401 Dufferin St. Yet another beautiful addition to Yorkdale is the 1,600 square foot Van Cleef & Arpels boutique. Founded in 1896 by Alfred Van Cleef and his uncle Salomon Arpels, Cleef & Arpels is an iconic French jewelry, watch, and perfume company. The new Toronto showroom showcases iconic creations from the Alhambra and Cadenas collection, featuring exquisite malachite and pave diamonds – you’ll definitely want to make this your next luxury excursion destination.
Lavelle
627 King St. W While the nearby Thompson Hotel rooftop still boasts a gorgeous view of the city, Lavelle has quickly overtaken it as the place to see and be seen. Self-proclaimed as a rooftop experience unlike any other, the luxe venue is a heavenly oasis for the city's moneyed elite. Visitors can sip on a delicious martini by the pool outdoors while waiting for their reservation at the fabulous French restaurant run by acclaimed chef Romain Avril. Following the sumptuous dinner, feel free to lounge in the private cabanas and luxuriate in the magnificent 360-degree view of the city's horizon.
W Skincare
67 Portland St. #200 Tucked away in a nondescript brownstone off King West lies the city's best-kept beauty secret. Originally established in Vancouver over a decade ago by skin care goddess Lorinda Zimmerman, W Skincare is where stars like Halle Berry and future Duchess Meghan Markle get their dewy, youthful glow. Although the chic clinic offers a range of standard facial services including chemical peels and broken capillary remedies, it's their unique double blast regime that has stars flying around the world to see Zimmerman. A gentle microdermabrasion paired with low level laser therapy will have your skin looking supple and radiant immediately afterwards. Appointment spots fill up quickly in the weeks leading up to TIFF, so be sure to book early!
Grey Gardens 199 Augusta Ave
Don't let the name fool you - this isn't a safe haven for mother-daughter agoraphobics. While suitable for family dinners, the 55-seat restaurant and bar is perhaps best known for its impressive selection of private-order wines, meticulously selected by General Manager and Sommelier Jake Skakun. In the well stocked cellar you'll find obscure and elusive bottles such as Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet’s La Souteronne and Rioja’s López de Heredia. If wine's not your taste, ask for the secret sake menu that pairs perfectly with the resto's a la carte snack plates (that includes some of the city's best oysters). Bon Apetit! 141

Welcome to
THE BISHA
Opening the first flagship property for THE BISHA HOTEL brand, the private label boutique Hotel & Residence is the first of its kind to hit Toronto since the FOUR SEASONS went up in the 1960s. In a joint venture between LIFETIME DEVELOPMENTS and INK ENTERTAINMENT, the Toronto skyline prepares for its latest chic landmark.

LOBBY BAR
142
Channeling INK founder Charles Khabouth’s previous restaurant-club creations (think Byblos and REBEL Entertainment Complex) the city’s infamous venues are known for their ultra cosmopolitan, sexy and contemporary vibes. The hotel-condo combo will follow suit, catering to the young professionals who dominate the area. The entertainment mogul definitely knows how to draw attention with the Bisha advertising geared towards monochromatic editorial style photography, highlighting artistic brand texture while delivering a bold statement. The lifestyle and hospitality king knows how to make a definite statement marketing and communicating his pristine taste after successfully running privately owned INK, which earns nearly $30 million in revenue per year. Khabouth now adds a $150 million dollar hotelcondo project to his list. Debuting this summer on Blue Jays Way, the breathtaking 44-storey glass and steel structure emerges from a historical red brick façade synonymous with Torontonian architecture dating back to the 1800s, designed by Rudy Wallman. The highly anticipated boutique is divided between condominium suites and an exclusive hotel, featuring divine interiors designed by Alessandro Munge from Studio Munge. The 7 th floor suites feature interior design envisioned by rock legend Lenny Kravitz, for Kravitz Design Inc. Offering the ultimate mecca for jetsetters worldwide, with an evident nightclub feel, the location offers a 24-hour café, lobby bar, private meeting rooms rooftop dining alongside the infinity pool, worldclass restaurants, and a list of luxurious amenities topping the heart of Toronto’s entertainment district. The chic atmosphere is guaranteed to captivate your creativity, catering to the bold, embracing the beautiful and ushering in an experience that is none other than boutique.

VANCOUVER
The West Coast’s VIP (Very Instagrammable Place) city, Vancouver, is a dream locale for sunset seekers, hiking junkies and seafood connoisseurs. Its natural wilderness and breathtaking views add inspiration to their hotels, restaurants and other hot spots. Read on to discover some of Vancouver’s most beloved gems. By Leora Heilbronn
Catriona Jeffries Gallery
274 E 1st Ave In the uber exclusive world of art dealers and collectors, this art gallery is touted as one of the most vital contemporary galleries in Canada (and some say even on an international scale). Founded in 1994, the renowned gallery is responsible for introducing Vancouver artists to the world stage at prominent shows such as Art Basel Miami Beach and Art Forum Berlin, thus launching the careers of many up and coming local painters. Over the next few months be sure to stop by the gallery to gaze at groundbreaking new works by local artists Elizabeth Mcintosh, Monique Mouton and Silke Otto-Knapp.
Smile Thai Wellness Spa
235 Robson St. Conveniently located on Robson Street in central Vancouver, Smile Thai is consistently voted the number one spa in the city. Pamper yourself with the popular deep tissue massage or aroma oil massage and your tense muscles will feel like jelly in no time. The spa is also one of only a handful in the city to offer cupping, pre-natal massages and couples massages that both men and women swear by. Take a break from the daily grind and escape to the aromatic and oh-so-relaxing oasis of Smile Thai.
Miku
200 Granville St #70
Perfectly located next to Vancity’s waterfront, Miku takes full advantage of the fresh seafood offerings. In a city where sushi restaurants are more plentiful than neighborhood Starbucks, this restaurant easily stands out amongst its competitors. Executive Corporate Chef Kazuya Matsuoka and Executive Chef Kazuhiro Hayashi’s aburi sushi as well as their Japanese Joshu Wagyu steak is known in some circles as being the best in the world. Whether you’re a local or just on a quick business trip, Misu is a must try for Japanese cuisine at its finest.
L’Abattoir 217 Carrall St.
Are you a vegetarian or not in the mood for meat? No problem! The mouthwatering Gastown restaurant isn’t just for meat lovers, as the name may suggest. While foodies from near and far trek to L’Abattoir for its seasonal market-driven fare, it’s their refreshing cocktail menu that deserves its fair share of the raves. From the avocado gimlet (made with fresh avocados) to the summer appropriate third beach, the libations are unlike any other bar offerings. Comic book aficionados will delight in the fact that Bar Manager Thor Paulson’s special is aptly named Loki’s Revenge.
