Barrier-free experience in Czech-Saxon Switzerland We are pleased that you are using this brochure to find your bearings in the wonderful, huge area that is the Czech-Switzerland National Park. The country is rugged, dissected by deep valleys and full of rocky towers although the Barrier-free Czech-Saxon Switzerland brochure enables access to people with locomotive problems, wheelchair-bound people, seniors, as well as young families with prams. We believe that everybody should be able to choose from the wide range of restaurant and accommodation facilities and the trip tips suitable for wheelchair-bound visitors and hand bikers, depending on the severity of their handicap. We hope that you will appreciate the information on barrier-free transport, access to information centres and the cultural and active events. The landscape of the natural and cultural heritage of Czech-Saxon Switzerland dates back more than 90 million years while the first settlements were established more than 10,000 years ago by hunters in the Middle Stone Age. It is countryside full of wonderful rocky formations, towers, gates, ravines, passes, picturesque canyons and lookout points. The area is home to many fauna and flora species. Both rare and critically endangered species can be found here. Czech-Switzerland was declared a national park on 1 January 2000. Saxon-Switzerland is an inseparable and essential part of Czech- Switzerland. In fact, this is a single area called Czech-Saxony Switzerland has an imaginary line divided by the state border. For this reason, we tried to choose the most interesting parts of the neighbouring region for you.

Two painters from Switzerland, Adrian Zingg and Anton Graff, who worked at the Dresden Academy in late 18th century, were the propagators of this region that captivated and resembled their home country. No less interesting in this region is the wide range of cultural heritage of national and international significance. There are also many interesting towns and picturesque villages with the unique architecture of the Upper Lusatian houses. Some places are well known from featuring in films of fairy tales, such as Prácheň and Dolský Mlýn, which is hidden away in the valley of the Kamenice River. Come with us to experience the this region of mysteries - Czech-Saxon Switzerland. This brochure will be your guide and adviser. The symbols and assessment of accessibility have been taken from similar mapping used in Saxon-Switzerland. German standards DIN 18024/18025 are also published here, although some assessments differ. Strict certification according to the standard is not the main aim, rather an unbiased and detailed description of the facility from the users point of view when used by a wheelchair-bound or handicapped person to decide if a specific point or place is suitable for them. The reason for using the accessibility assessment in Czech-Saxony that was adopted in the neighbouring country, is the interconnection of the regions, the planned joint publication of a Barrier-free Czech-Saxony Switzerland brochure and the absence of a uniform assessment of barrier-free areas in the Czech Republic. The symbol is assigned if all associated parameters are fully or mostly met. Differing parameters are mentioned in text. Parameters not mentioned in the text have been met and correspond to the dimensions shown with the individual symbols. Minor deviations from the required values do not prevent the assignment of the symbol in question. The symbols to express the level of barrier-free access was assigned to reflect and correspond to the accessibility level. For example, a bowling centre is accessible without barriers although access to the bowling lanes usually requires two stairs, which results in assigning the symbol for a wheelchair-bound person with a helper (assistant).

Trails for wheelchair-bound people and hand bikers Elbe Canyon tour Difficulty: easy/medium Length: 45 km (circuit) Suitable for: wheelchair, handbike Surface: bitumen For handbike trip, you can schedule an approximate 45 km long trip: Děčín - Dolní Žleb - Bad Schandau - Hřensko - Děčín. The route mainly follows bike paths without engine vehicle operation and because it follows the flow of the River Elbe, there are no high inclinations to cope with. When travelling back from Bad Schandau, take the ferry in Hřensko to travel to Dolní Žleb and then follow the bike path back to Děčín. Do not rush and thoroughly enjoy the beauty created by water and time.

Bike path Děčín - Dolní Žleb - Bad Schandau Difficulty: light Length: individual Suitable for: wheelchair, handbike, pram, in-line skates Surface: bitumen There is bike path from Děčín through Dolní Žleb and the state border to Bad Schandau in Germany. The ideal route for the trip is the full stretch from Prostřední Žleb to Krippen. The stretches Prostřední Žleb - Čertova Voda and Dolní Žleb - Schöna provide a smooth surface, plenteously used by in-line skaters and both stretches can be recommended as the best for wheelchairs. The route is almost flat and the wheelchairs run perfectly here. Don‘t forget to fully look all around because the natural scenery of the sandstone canyon carved out by the Elbe River is second to none.

Maxičky - Mlýnský rybník (Mill‘s pond) Difficulty: medium Length: 7 km (there and back) Suitable for: wheelchair, handbike, pram Ascended metres: 166 metres Surface: bitumen Close to Děčín, is a pleasant bitumen road from Maxičky to Mlýnský rybník. You can park either on the large parking place by the Maxičky Hotel with the lido or by the Dřevák restaurant. Then follow the yellow hiking sign. The path slowly climbs up amongst the cottages. You will then reach a crossroads where the yellow trail carries straight although you should left to the unsigned path. From this point the path to Mlýnský rybník descends across a quiet forest environment that is typical for this area. Access down to the water is difficult for wheelchair-bound people although they can comfortably ride on the embankment. You return back on the same path.

Edmundova (Tichá) soutěska (Edmund‘s (Quiet) Pass) Difficulty: medium/heavy Length: 3.5 km (there and back) Suitable for: wheelchairs, prams Ascended metres: 153 metres Surface: beaten forest path, sandy with roots in some places The entrance to Edmundova soutěska is located in Hřensko. The path is not paved and may be demanding for a wheelchairbound person without assistance. However, with an assistant, 3 km on the forest path up to the boats port can be managed. To enjoy a cruise in the canyon carved out by the Kamenice rivulet, you need to cope with a few steps when boarding the boat. Even if you are not planning to cruise on a boat, travelling to the unique areas of the passes, which is the most valuable and interesting part of Czech-Switzerland, is well worth.

Růžová vyhlídka (Rose Lookout) Difficulty: heavy Length: 4 km (there and back) Suitable for: wheelchair Ascended metres: 66 metres Surface: forest beaten path, sandy and stony with roots in some places Růžová vyhlídka is accessible from Bynovec via Děčín where you can drive up to the saw building by car. From there, follow the red hiking sign. Riding on the forest path is quite difficult; there are stones, roots and sandy stretches where the wheels may sink which must be taken into consideration. However, the path is not too long and can be managed with assistance without any serious problem. The reward for doing so is the breathtaking and unique lookout to Děčín, Děčínský Sněžník table mountain and the Elbe valley.

Around Děčínský Sněžník table mountain Difficulty: easy/medium Length: 15 km (circuit) Suitable for: handbike Ascended metres: 386 metres Surface: bitumen A good starting point for the trip is large parking place by the Hřebenová bouda hotel where there is a barrier-free toilet available. From there, go straight across the crossroads to Jílové. Behind Sněžník municipality, turn to bike path No. 3017 in the right hand sharp curve from the main road. After three kilometres, turn left to Vlčí jezero (Wolf Lake). This will take you around the lake and will end on the main road for returning to Sněžník municipality. The path has a bitumen surface and there are no unexpected steep inclinations.

Around Tiské stěny (Tisá Walls) Difficulty: medium/heavy Length: 7 km (circuit) Suitable for: wheelchair, handbike Ascended metres: 286 metres Surface: bitumen, stony trail, forest path A pleasant and almost unused road runs from Tisá to Rájce. By the Lesní zátiší guest house, turn right on cycle path No. 3017. The first stretch has a steeper inclination along a broken stony path. After 500 metres, turn right at the yellow hiking sign. The path continues along a beaten forest path and terminates on the road at Turistická chata Tisá. Due to the indented terrain, the path is not recommended for special road handbikes, although the path can be managed on a wheelchair with assistance.

Circuit across the National Parks of Czech-Saxony Switzerland Difficulty: medium/heavy Length: 30 km (circuit) Suitable for: handbikes Ascended metres: 420 metres Surface: bitumen, gravel road The route enables you to enjoy the beauties of Czech-Saxony Switzerland from seat of your handbike. Park in Kyjov and set off across Kyjov Valley. The path runs along Křinice rivulet and continues to Zadní Doubice. Cross the state border and visit Hinterhermsdorf in Germany. Return back to the Czech Republic via Zadní Jetřichovice. Then, the path follows cycle path Nos. 3030 and 3029 across Tokáň and Doubice back to Kyjov. This demanding trip, of which a major part runs through the rock towers of forested valleys, will leave an unforgettable impression.

Trip tips For families Morning: The youngest family members will surely be surprised when you tell them in the morning that they will see a grizzly bear. At the zoo in Děčín, which is located at the top of Pastýřská stěna, there are more 150 animal species. You can look forward to your visit as no other Czech zoo breeds that fourlegged, furry giant. And if it is overcast and stormy outside? Never mind. The detached Rajské ostrovy (Paradise Islands) exposition, located under the zoo at Teplická Street, offers travel across the world in just one morning. The mystery world of seas, animals from mangrove coasts, tropical Asian rain forests or semi-deserts on a Caribbean Island will surely compensate for a rainy morning.

Noon: You will surely be hungry after the trip around the world and a great idea is to visit the Ciao Ciao restaurant and pizzeria not far away on Teplická Street in Děčín. You can sample the fresh fish specialities or the great classic Italian cuisine. A reserved non-smoking area is commonplace.

Afternoon: Děčín, a town hemmed in a valley between forested hills, has rather an indented character; however, wheelchair-bound people can enjoy a comfortable stroll here. A pleasant bitumen path below the castle follows the Elbe and Ploučnice rivers and cuts across the wonderful castle garden. The historical water level gauge chiselled into rock, the chain and stone bridge and the castle pond these are just a sample of everything to be found here. Late afternoon: Refreshments come in handy if it is hot summer day. The large swimming area in Staré Město in Děčín will entice all the family. You don‘t have to worry about going there under unpleasant weather conditions because the area offers indoor swimming pools and thermal springs from beneath the town.

Cultural Morning: Any objections to starting with breakfast in the Castle Coffee Bar? They are masters with crepes and great fair trade mamacoffee. Děčín Castle, grandly rising high on the rock spur above the confluence of the Elbe and Ploučnice rivers, is a key sight of historical interest of Northern Bohemia. Most of the exhibition areas are also accessible to wheelchair-bound visitors. On your way there, ask for assistance over two steps and stop in Růžová zahrada (Rose Garden). The combination of Baroque architecture and the beauty of the blooming roses will warm the cockles of the heart. Afternoon: Discover the unique architectonic gem hidden in the Šluknov headland. Discover the Virgin Mary Loreta Chapel in Rumburk. The chapel is a copy of an Italian Renaissance original. The compound consists of the Loreta Chapel, arcades with the stations of the cross and the Saints Stairs, the monastery church of St. Lawrence and the former Capuchin monastery. You should not experience any problems with your wheelchair; a barrier-free toilet is also available in the information centre on the square.

Večer: A combination of famous glass working skills with a gastronomic experience. This combination is offered by the unique connection of the glass shop and restaurant Ajeto in Nový Bor. You can choose from local specialities and admire the skills of the local glass makers at the same time. The icing on the cake of this eventful day can be either a theatre or cinema performance. The majority of the cultural facilities in our region provide barrierfree access and therefore, do not hesitate to travel to Rumburk, Varnsdorf, Šluknov, Krásná Lípa or Děčín for any performances that take your fancy.

Active Morning: The path of the Elbe River valley flooded in morning sunshine is the right start for all active men and women. The comfortable bitumen path along the Elbe River in the hemmed rocky valley is ideal for wheelchairs, handbikes, prams and inline skaters. Schedule your route for as long as you want - you will not regret it.

Noon: A light lunch in the Refugio climber‘s restaurant in Tisá is ideal. Climbing to the highest peak of Děčín Highlands is still ahead of us. So try the sheep‘s cheese au gratin with chilli pepper and

olives or the Camembert style Hermelin cheese au gratin in puff pastry coated with cranberry. Afternoon: Conquering Děčínský Sněžník table mountain is surely worthwhile. You achieve this by managing the steep stretch at the beginning. Two great lookouts and a stroll along the flat bitumen road will be your reward. First, enjoy the view from Drážďanská vyhlídka (Dresden Lookout). Assistance will be needed to cross the rooty path up to the edge of the lookout. Continue along the pleasant path up to stone lookout tower. The spiral staircase runs to the peak of the lookout tower, which is not accessible for wheelchair-bound visitors, although the lookout terrace by the restaurant provides and excellent view over Děčín and faraway distances. Evening: After a busy day, you need some regeneration so immerse your mind in a world of fantasy in Toskana Therme in Bad Schandau, Germany. The combination of thermal water with salt content, music and visual effects in the local spa facility will let you forget the worries of everyday life.

Enjoyment Morning: You are surely bursting to start your expeditions to experience the local unique natural wealth. Do not rush and first visit the House of Czech Switzerland. The „Czech-Switzerland - life, mystery, inspiration“ exposition in the House of Czech Switzerland will give you an insight in the most hidden corners of local nature, and you will learn something of the history and cultural values of this unique territory. Take your children with you - they will like it here.

Afternoon: You must surely be hungry in the valley among the rocks. Be patient for a while and drive to nearby Varnsdorf. An extraordinary experience awaits you in the premises of the regional Kocour brewery. You can taste the wide range of special beer from all over the world as well as those produced here by the local brew masters in themed brewery restaurant. Good beer must surely be combined with great food and you can look forward to excellent Bohemian cuisine to intensify your great experience.

Noon: With a snack and a bottle of water in your rucksack, head to the very heart of the national park through Kyjov Valley. The path follows Křinice rivulet, which produced a canyon style pass here. You can admire the rocky collapse - evidence that erosion processes controlled by time and nature and time are still alive here - as well as the rich local flora and fauna. It only depends on you, how deeply you get into the unique labyrinth of the rocky towers.

Evening: Sunset between the table mountains? Yes, even this experience is affordable for wheelchairbound persons, comfortably and without extra effort. Depart from Varnsdorf across the Šluknov area and Mikulášovice to cross the border in Dolní Poustevna to get to Bad Schandau. The discreet German village of Rathmannsdorf hides, almost among the fields, a barrier-free lookout tower with lift. Have a one euro coin and Euro Key ready with you. Now, there is nothing to prevent you from enjoying the unique panoramic outlook to most of the table mountains of Saxon-Switzerland.
