The Centre for English Teaching (CET) is part of the University of Sydney, providing English language university preparatory courses for post-graduate students. We offer direct entry pathway programs for entry to the University, as well as general, business and professional English courses. We also offer IELTS test preparation courses and customised short and long term programs. We are your first choice for excellence in teaching and learning. Our highly qualified instructors have extensive experience teaching both internationally and in Australia. Our friendly and caring learning environment will make studying at Sydney a worthwhile experience. 5 Pathway Course Details

Direct Entry Course (DEC) Course CRICOS Code 070496B What is DEC? It allows you to experience the learning environment found in your university faculty. You will also learn the skills necessary for success in university situations including tutorials, seminars, essays and research reports. What will I learn? You will study with classmates entering courses in related university faculties. There is continuous assessment in the course, and tasks are based on assessments in university faculties. If you attend the entire course, pass all assessments and meet the necessary academic entry requirements, you will gain direct entry to your university course. This means you can pass directly to your preferred degree at the University (subject to visa status). What do I need to enter DEC? You need a Conditional Offer of Admission to the University of Sydney and an IELTS result.

–– DEC 25 weeks – if your latest IELTS score is one full band below your university English language entry requirement (includes a sponsored IELTS Test). –– DEC 15 weeks – If your latest IELTS score is only half a band below your university English language entry requirement. –– DEC 10 weeks – If your latest IELTS score is half a band below your university requirement, and you have the requirement in every band. Special requirements may apply, depending on your target course. When do I apply for DEC? We have two intake dates per year for each course, but the course allows for various entry points depending on your current skills profile and target university course. How do I apply for DEC? Courses may require an IELTS test as part of the assessment. Equivalent scores in TOEFL or other approved tests will also be accepted. The duration of your course depends on your English language entry requirement and your current level of English.

What will I learn? It reinforces academic skills such as writing essays, listening to lectures, participating in tutorials and presenting seminars. It will help you facilitate the transition to university study in Australia and introduce you to critical thinking, research skills and learning strategies. What do I need to enter GAS? You will need a confirmed offer for entry to the University and a minimum IELTS score of 6.5. When do I apply for GAS? There are two intake dates per year. 12 GENERAL ENGLISH COURSES (GE) Course CRICOS Code 070496B What is GE? It is a course designed to equip you for life in Australia. It is taught at all levels with materials adapted to meet the specific needs of the class. GE is suitable for people on student, working holiday, ELICOS or tourist visas and focuses on the practical language needed for day to day business and communication. What will I learn? You will learn the language skills necessary to function in Australia. GE will also give you the skills and confidence to get the job you want, travel around Australia or prepare for life after university. GE will improve your communication skills in a supportive atmosphere. Above all GE courses can be tailored to your individual needs whether you are preparing for permanent residence or developing the language skills needed to enter the workforce. Enjoy the experience of studying at one Australia’s top universities. What do I need to enter GE? There are no set entry requirements. Initial placement in a class is by our placement test or an IELTS or equivalent test result.

IELTS Testing IELTS Test Centre AU091 What is IELTS Testing? It is a world class, proven English test. Over 1.4 million candidates take the IELTS test each year to start their journeys into international education and employment. It is recognised by more than 6000 institutions in over 135 countries. We are an official IELTS testing centre. It is part of a global network of more than 300 test locations. You will need to take an IELTS test if you want to: –– enter a DEC course –– enter university from AE –– externally validate your GE course completion.

What do I need to do for IELTS? There are many IELTS test dates throughout the year. Our website has details, or you can ask at Reception. You can either download a test application form from our website: sydney.edu.au/cet/ielts/ registration.shtml or ask in person at CET Reception. How do I prepare for IELTS? We conduct IELTS preparation classes each evening. For details, please check our website: sydney.edu.au/cet/ielts/ preparation.shtml If you are studying in an AE course, your teachers will include IELTS test preparation as part of your regular class work.

If you are studying in a DEC or GE course, you can also attend our fasttrack IELTS preparation classes in the evening, or you can prepare for the IELTS test using the practice materials available at the global IELTS website. IELTS preparation materials are on sale at CET reception. How do I apply for IELTS? You can email cet.reception@sydney.edu.au IELTS preparation class fees Course Fees: $60 per class. There is a special rate of $200 if you enrol in 10 classes. How much does an IELTS test cost? If you take an IELTS test, you will need to pay the IELTS test fee. Currently the IELTS test fee is $317.

Cambridge Preparation Courses Course CRICOS Code 070496B We are a Cambridge Preparation Centre. What are Cambridge courses? Courses and examinations provide a rigorous assessment of your English level and preparation courses are designed to improve your language skills.

2) Transfer to another institution a) Transfer to the University of Sydney – we charge an administration fee of up to A$200. b) Transfer to another institution – if you transfer to a formal degree or diploma course at another university, TAFE or College, you MAY be eligible for a transfer to that institution of up to 80% of the remainder of your tuition fees. Both CET and the other institution must approve the transfer. You should request a transfer on the CET ‘transfer form’. You may need a release letter from CET. CET will notify Immigration where necessary.
