Diploma Project: “The treatment of authentic material in the adaptive reuse project. A campus for the recovery and the restoration of artistic elements” in Bucharest, Romania
+ conversion of the former Matches Factory in Bucharest + 11&12th semester / 6th year
+ Atelier Iulia Stanciu
+ Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism
The project initially aimed to find solutions to save the original matter from demolition or destructive interventions, having in the subconscious the many examples of the removal of the matter that are currently taking place in Bucharest and beyond. The analysis of the pre-existing building forced the choice of the new function to be compatible with the old use in terms of morphology and scale. Thus, from a manufacturing space, the factory will become an educational campus for the recovery and restoration of artistic elements, a program spatially close to the manufacturing one. The alterations will respect the principle of minimum intervention. The personal belief that it is possible to pursue and develop the craft is not enough. In addition, discussions with specialists in the field revealed the need to evolve education in this regard. Therefore, a vocational training center in direct relation with the recovery and restoration program was proposed to build a multi-disciplinary education with immediate application on the recovered material.

Particularly in the case of Liechtenstein, there is a special circumstance whereby a high influx of employees from the border nations results in congested roadways. The aim is to create a happy coexistence between nature and civilisation as part of the larger “Vision Liechtenstein”. The major goal of “The Green Line” is to establish a mobility system that takes the demands of the environment into account, which are frequently disregarded in traditional infrastructure development.

The intervention will mediate the two types of construction that are so different from one another and to facilitate a communication between them. By building in close proximity, the aim is to create a natural relationship between a construction that is a witness to the past time and new architecture. Following the architecture of the fortifications and its spatial typologies, the new intervention `defends` the old sense of place and the artifacts by surrounding them where the conjuncture given by the blocks supresses their identity. On the other hand, the new construction acts as a fortification wall that defends the valuable hstorical fabric that remained after Ceausescu`s interventions.

In the 6th century A.D., the water supply was difficult to reach for the soldiers from the Sucidava Garrison who lived in the fortress with their families and entire household. On the fortress plateau, 19m higher than the Danube level, deep wells could not be dug due to the layers of sand and gravel, which collapsed during drilling. A fountain built in steps that followed the hill was the answer to the water necessities of that time and it became an opportunity of hiding when the atacks were taking place. Now the fountain is remembered only as a secret in the tales of the ones who know the place..

”The Port Fountain” - restoration of a heritage 1888 fountain on the waterfront of the Danube in Drobeta Turnu-Severin, Romania
page from the Construction Site Journal
The fountain was built in 1888 by the former shipyard workers to provide water to the construction site. It was until the restoration project a witness of the industrial period that was inactive in the local public space. Our ngo has teamed up with specialist, academicians and authorities to restore and prepare the fountain for boing an active water supply again. While working here, we have identified a key problem within the local community. The public space of the waterfront suffers due to the inexistence of any accesibility strategy that would benefit the area. The project has two long term ambitions: research and public information and non-invasive methods of making abandoned heritage accesible. to be continued...
