ANNUAL REPORT

A THRIVING ABILENE, ENDOWED

FOREVER

We are particularly excited to share this year’s report with you, because it unveils and embodies our new mission and vision statements. These statements capture the essence of what we do and why we do it.

Our mission is simple. The Community Foundation of Abilene empowers people to make a lasting charitable impact on our community. That is why we exist. We empower our donors to leave a legacy of supporting the causes they care about, whether it be housing the homeless, feeding the hungry, enriching our community through arts and culture, helping students further their education, providing access to healthcare, preserving history or anything else that enhances our community.

Our vision statement is also simple. It is for a thriving Abilene, endowed forever. The more endowed assets we have to benefit our community, the greater the ability for Abilene to grow and thrive. This past year, we reached a new record high of total assets – $138 million. What this means for Abilene’s future is exciting to think about! We granted out more than $8 million over the past year based on our donors’ charitable interests. Of the total granted out, $6.5 million stayed here in Abilene. The more we can endow Abilene, the greater that number becomes. This is why we believe that an endowed Abilene yields a thriving Abilene.

I hope you enjoy reading through this report. You will see how donors are doing just what our mission states – making a lasting charitable impact on our community through endowment funds they have established at CFA. Grants from our donors’ funds have made impactful grants to meaningful causes over the years, and, through the power of endowment, they can continue to grow and make grants for years to come.

We welcome you to be part of our mission and vision. You can make a lasting charitable impact on our community and help pursue our vision for a thriving Abilene, endowed forever.

We connect donors to causes they care about, manage strategic investments to preserve our endowments, make grants that align with donor intent, respond to community needs and provide philanthropic leadership to enhance Abilene’s future, today.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF ABILENE | ANNUAL REPORT 2019

WE CONNECT DONORS TO CAUSES THEY CARE ABOUT.

We empower people to make a lasting charitable impact on our community.

OUR MISSION:

WE MANAGE STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS TO PRESERVE OUR ENDOWMENTS.

First, we listen. We want to know what matters to you. Then, we help you identify the organizations doing work in those fields. Together, we’ll develop a charitable giving strategy to maximize your ability to impact the identified causes.

This is what we mean by lasting impact. When you establish an endowment fund to support the causes you care about, we invest the principal gift to help the fund grow. Our investment team includes our investment committee, investment consultant and investment managers who work together to carefully and thoughtfully protect and grow these assets for long-term sustainability.

WE MAKE GRANTS THAT ALIGN WITH DONOR INTENT.

Now for the fun part! Growth from your fund is used to make grants to the nonprofit causes that interest you. Because of our strategic investments, your fund has the potential to eventually grant out more money than the amount of your initial gift, making an even bigger impact on our community.

2

WE RESPOND TO COMMUNITY NEEDS.

We do this in a number of ways. Our unrestricted funds give us the flexibility to support the changing needs in our community. Our donor-advised fundholders can also respond to emerging needs by recommending grants from their funds as needs arise.

WE PROVIDE PHILANTHROPIC LEADERSHIP.

Our commitment to this community goes beyond grantmaking. We use our resources to equip local nonprofits with knowledge and skills to effectively carry out their missions. One example of how we do this is by offering free quarterly educational workshops for nonprofits.

THE PURPOSE? TO ENHANCE ABILENE’S FUTURE, TODAY.

It’s all about making our community better. We believe the power of endowment makes this possible. Abilene is filled with people working to make a positive impact every day. It’s our mission to make that impact lasting.

DONOR-ADVISED FUNDS

This type of fund gives you the flexibility to recommend which nonprofit causes receive grants from your fund each year.

Brady Bradshaw doesn’t just like sharks. He LOVES them.

“My favorite shark would pretty much be the Mako shark,” said the 9-year-old on a toasty summer day at the Abilene Zoo.

It was on this day that he met Caroline Haney, a girl his age with whom he quickly formed a unique bond.

“We’ve both been through similar things, and it’s just nice to know someone else knows what you’re feeling,” said Caroline.

Brady lives with a congenital heart defect, and Caroline has fought a battle with cancer. Both have had wishes fulfilled by Make-A-Wish. Caroline went to Disney World, and Brady went to Disney World to – you guessed it – swim with sharks.

“I wanted to swim with any shark. I didn’t care what it was!”

CFA arranged for Caroline’s family to meet Brady and his family because of a connection the two didn’t even know they shared. Mike and Julie Denny, Caroline’s grandparents, have a donor-advised fund at CFA.

Inspired by Caroline’s journey, the Dennys have recommended grants from their fund to Make-AWish, thus supporting wishes like Brady’s.

“I know what Brady has been through and what Caroline has been through,” said Mike Denny. “It’s an important thing to us and pretty emotional.”

Swimming with sharks was an experience Brady will never forget, and it meant more to him than the sheer thrill of it.

“What has inspired me throughout this process is that Make-A-Wish has given other children and me possibilities to have a dream to see this or that, something that they want.”

See the video of Brady and Caroline’s day at the zoo at cfabilene.org/impact.

Patricia agrees.

A trip to the doctor’s office, for many of us, means hopping in the car and driving across town. Or, we might have a family member or friend drive us. Not everyone has this luxury.

“In the beginning, I would wonder how I was going to get back and forth to different appointments that were up here,” said Patricia Waddell about her commutes to and from the ResourceCare clinic in Clyde, where she receives care.

Disability in Action fills the gap for people like Patricia who lack access to affordable transportation and cannot always pay for public transport.

The nonprofit received a $15,000 discretionary grant in fall of 2018 to support Transportation Works, a program to provide same-day transportation for citizens with disabilities. It’s the only service in town known to provide same-day transportation for citizens with disabilities, free of charge.

We introduced Patricia to CFA board member Ian Nickerson, whose mother has utilized the Transportation Works service in the past.

“Having Disability in Action was a blessing for her and for me. It kind of took some of the worry and concern away, knowing that she could get to those very important appointments.”

Ian rode along with Patricia to one of her appointments, experiencing first-hand the impact of the CFA grant.

“I realize even more so now, it’s more than just getting a ride,” said Ian about Disability in Action’s services.

“They’ve helped me out with Medicare papers and stuff like that, things that I’m really not too good on . . . They’ve actually been a godsend.”

UNRESTRICTED & FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDS

CFA offers two types of grant cycles for nonprofits to apply for funding – Discretionary grant cycles and Field of Interest grant cycles.

Discretionary grant cycles are made possible by Unrestricted funds, which give CFA the flexibility to respond to emerging needs in the community. Field of Interest funds are established by donors with a passion for a specific cause area, and nonprofits serving that cause can apply for grants from these funds.

Emily and Michael Breninger recently adopted their third child, turning their family of four into a family of five.

“The fact that I now have three kids for certain that are my own and the chance to . . . give them stability and a house with love and care has definitely been what I have enjoyed the most about the whole process,” said Michael about the adoptions, which were the result of Big Country CASA’s mission.

Big Country CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is a local nonprofit that trains community volunteers to serve as advocates for abused and neglected children in the court system.

CFA fundholders Carolyn and John Beckham care deeply about the work CASA is doing to help these children and connect them to loving homes, which is why they have recommended grants from their Donor-Advised fund to support CASA.

“We cannot afford to not take action with these children,” said Carolyn. “They’re just too precious and too important to our future.”

CASA also has its own Agency Designated fund at CFA, which can provide a lasting source of income for the nonprofit, ensuring it has resources to further its mission for years to come.

“CASA at its heart is about trying to make for brighter futures,” said Carolyn. “It is about everyone working together to make sure that no child slips through the cracks of an overburdened foster care system. It is about second chances, and sometimes new beginnings. But above all else, it is about making sure that children are loved and have a safe place to live, to grow and thrive.”

See the video featuring the Beckhams and Breninger family at cfabilene.org/impact.

JEAN HAYS

If ever there lived a woman who loved and gave back to her community, it was Jean Hays.

See the video tribute to Jean Hays at cfabilene.org/legacy.

“I think it’s a true testament to who Jean was and who Curly was, that they stewarded their funds and that they’re going to make an amazing impact on many, many lives.”

Jean passed away in 2018, leaving gifts to six nonprofits, including the Community Foundation of Abilene. What the organizations didn’t immediately know was how great the gifts would be — $1.5 million each.

The gift to CFA supports the Jean and Curly Hays Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to college students who have reached at least their junior year of college. This gift will grant out an additional $60,000 in scholarships each year.

“That’s huge,” said CFA President/CEO Katie Alford. “It will be able to help more students and will be able to help at a much higher level.”

Because of Jean’s humility, none of the nonprofit beneficiaries expected the gifts would be so large.

NELLE & RALPH HOOKS

Nelle and Ralph Hooks understood the importance of giving CFA the ability to fund the changing needs in our community.

They left an unrestricted estate gift, which will support our discretionary grant cycles.

10
Curly Hays, Jean’s Husband, was also passionate about helping students acheive their educational goals.

LAVERN ROEDER

Lavern Roeder left an IRA to benefit three different CFA funds: The Ralph and Lavern Donnell Designated Fund, which supports Meals on Wheels and First Central Presbyterian Church, The Ralph and Lavern Donnell Scholarship and The Ralph and Lavern Donnell Unrestricted Fund.

When a destructive tornado hit Abilene on May 18, the Community Foundation of Abilene responded that very day, establishing the Abilene Disaster Relief Fund as a safe and effective way for people to donate and support Abilenians directly impacted by tornado damage.

CFA and the United Way of Abilene proudly joined forces in a unified effort to raise and distribute funds. Together, we raised more than $500,000 for relief and recovery efforts.

STRONG

More than half was granted out within weeks of the storm, helping people with essential, immediate needs. The remaining funds are being used for long-term rebuilding projects.

Our ability to respond quickly during a crisis is a direct reflection of the Abilene community’s generosity and determination to help our neighbors in time of need.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF ABILENE | ANNUAL REPORT 2019

ORGANIZATIONS

Regional endowment funds support charitable projects in the outlying areas they serve. These groups have their own advisory boards which govern and make grants, while the organizations benefit from the Community Foundation of Abilene’s fund development, grantmaking expertise, legal knowledge and administrative support.

Regional Foundations managed by CFA and the amount of grants each organization made during FY19:

AVJ FOUNDATION: $87,160

The AVJ Foundation was established by the A.V. Jones family of Albany and Abilene in 1996. The charitable priorities of the AVJ Foundation focus on regional needs, with a particular interest in Albany and its educational and cultural activities.

COLEMAN COUNTY FOUNDATION: $77,907

Established in 1999, the Coleman County Foundation provides a means for residents to make a lasting impact on the nonprofit charities serving Coleman County.

The Friends of the Coleman County Foundation is a supporting membership group for citizens who believe in the future of their community. Friends of CCF awarded $20,000 of the $77k in total CCF grants in 2019. Membership is $100 annually. For more information, visit colemancountyfoundation.com

NOLAN COUNTY FOUNDATION

WINTERS AREA FOUNDATION: $19,143

County and civic leaders who wanted to make a positive impact in Sweetwater and Nolan County launched the Nolan County Foundation fund in 2000. For more information about the Nolan County Foundation, contact Carolyn Lawrence at jcrcclawre@aol.com
