The title of his most recent album, Between Two Worlds, perfectly encapsulates the boundary-crossing life and career of renowned trumpet player, composer, and educator Terell Stafford. Hailed as “one of the great players of our time” by the late piano icon McCoy Tyner, Mr. Stafford unites any number of dichotomies in his music: jazz and classical traditions, stunning virtuosity and profound emotion, stylistic eclecticism, and an immediately identifiable voice. Stafford juggles roles as a thriving musician and an acclaimed educator, or as a visionary bandleader and an in-demand sideman for some of the music’s most legendary performers. Perhaps most importantly, he strives to strike that always precarious balance between a professional touring musician and a loving husband and father to his family. The New Yorker called Stafford, “a distinguished bandleader and composer whose horn playing still startles with its verve and conviction.” Those facets can be heard vividly on more than 180 recordings over the last three decades. That includes a dozen albums under Stafford’s own name, from his debut Time To Let Go in 1995 to Between Two Worlds in 2023. In addition to the Terell Stafford Quintet, Stafford is the founder and managing and artistic director of the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia (JOP). As the director of jazz studies and chair of instrumental studies at Philadelphia’s Temple University, Mr. Stafford has become a nurturing mentor to new generations of up-and-coming jazz musicians. He has helped to guide the university and its students to victories at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jack Rudin Jazz Championship and to grow the school’s GRAMMY-nominated record label, BCM&D, with recordings by the Temple University Jazz Band (including guest artists Christian McBride, Joey DeFrancesco, Branford Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, Jon Faddis, and Dick Oatts) and all-star ensembles featuring Stafford and his fellow faculty members. Mr. Stafford has played a vital role in music by luminaries including Shirley Scott, Charles McPherson, Cedar Walton, Samara Joy, Bobby Watson, McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson, Kenny Barron, Frank Wess, Jimmy Heath, and Jon Faddis, He has enjoyed fruitful tenures with the Clayton Brothers band, Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Matt Wilson’s Arts and Crafts, and Vanguard Jazz Orchestra.

As a scholar, she has presented for state, divisional, and national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, the sixth annual Symposium on Sociology in Music Education, as well as the Phenomenon Singing Symposium in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. She has co-authored articles published in the Choral Journal, as well as the Journal of Research in Music Education. A native of Arkansas, she has experienced in her own life the power of music to provide a sense of community, better understanding of our humanity, and rich opportunities for self-discovery.

Marguerite Richardson holds a BM degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, an MM from the University of South Carolina, and the DM from Florida State University. Her teachers include Eliot Chapo, John Bauer (violin and viola), David Cerone, Ronald Gorevic, Kochira Harada, and Pamela Ryan (viola). Dr. Richardson has performed symphonic and chamber music throughout the United States, Germany, Italy, Great Britain, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and China. As a member of the Jacksonville Symphony, she appeared as soloist in performances of Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, Vivaldi’s Summer Concerto from The Four Seasons, and Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Violins. Dr. Richardson has appeared as recitalist and chamber musician in several venues in the north Florida area, including the St. Augustine Music Festival, the Chamber Music Society of Good Shepherd, and the Friday Musicale, in addition to on-campus performances. Dr. Richardson is professor of music and director of orchestral activities at Jacksonville University. She teaches courses in orchestral conducting, violin and viola pedagogy, and violin and viola literature, as well as coaches the Honors String Quartet and teaches the violin and viola studios. Dr. Richardson is actively involved as both a violin and viola performer, appearing regularly on faculty and student recitals. Under her direction, the Jacksonville University Orchestra and Jacksonville University Camerata are vibrant ensembles that perform repertoire of diverse musical styles, from Baroque to contemporary. In addition to presenting six major concerts on campus each year, the JU Orchestra and Camerata have also participated in sound track recordings for the Film Department, and collaborations with theatre, opera, musical theater, and choral productions, as well as off-campus performances throughout Florida. The Jacksonville University Orchestra regularly showcases compositions by faculty and students, and student winners of the annual concerto competition.

BIOGRAPHY CONTINUED
Dr. Richardson is a member of the American String Teachers Association, the Florida Music Education Association, the Florida Orchestra Association, the College Music Society, and the College Orchestra Directors Association, for which she served as national president during the 2022-2023 academic year. Dr. Richardson’s past conducting experience includes the University of North Florida Orchestra (a program she began and developed) and the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra (associate conductor), where she originated the Premiere Strings Orchestra and later served as conductor of the Repertory Orchestra. In 2016, Dr. Richardson participated in the International Conductors’ Festival held at Centre College in Danville, Ky., where she conducted the Piccadilly Symphony Orchestra from Manchester, England. This experience led to an invitation to conduct the Piccadilly Symphony in England in February 2017. In 2016, Dr. Richardson was named conductor of the Civic Orchestra of Jacksonville, a community-based ensemble that performs free classical music concerts throughout the north Florida area. As a violinist, Dr. Richardson performs with the Kinne Trio, the faculty piano trio-in-residence at Jacksonville University, which includes Shannon Lockwood (cello) and Scott Watkins (piano). The group’s debut recording features works by composers Clara Schumann and Amy Beach. In 2017, the trio, along with guest faculty, hosted the first Summer Chamber Music Intensive, a week-long chamber music residential camp for high school students. An avid orchestral violinist, Dr. Richardson continues to perform with the Jacksonville Symphony, a professional ensemble with which she was a full-time member prior to her joining the faculty of Jacksonville University. In the summers of 2012 and 2014, Dr. Richardson was a visiting foreign scholar at Beifang University (Yin Chuan, Ningxia Province, China) and, in 2012, a visiting professor of Ningxia Teachers University (Guyuan, Ningxia Province, China). In China, Dr. Richardson taught master classes and private lessons in both violin and viola, conducted the Beifang University Orchestra, and presented solo recitals.

With her distinctive voice as maestra, speaker, and poet, critics praise Panamanian-American conductor Kalena Bovell as “one of the brightest stars in classical music” (Channel 3 News, Connecticut). Her recent achievements include receiving the prestigious 2024 Sphinx Medal of Excellence—the highest honor bestowed by the Sphinx Organization—and being named a 20222024 awardee of the Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship. In a groundbreaking moment, Ms. Bovell etched her name in history in 2023 as the first Black woman to conduct an opera in Canada, conducting a world premiere reimagination of Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha. Ms. Bovell’s 2023-2024 season sees her traverse Canada, the U.S., and Switzerland. In North America, she will mark her debut performances with the Louisiana Philharmonic, Cincinnati Symphony, Colorado Music Festival, Hamilton Philharmonic, and the Victoria Symphony. Also of note are return performances with the Oakland Symphony and Musikkollegium Winterthur following her 2022 debut with the namesake orchestra. Residencies this season include the University of the Pacific and Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra. One of orchestral music’s marquee conductors, Ms. Bovell has blazed a formidable trail in just the past few years. On the Chineke! Orchestra’s 2022 album—Coleridge-Taylor, a celebration of the eponymous African-British composer—Ms. Bovell shined as a featured conductor. Apart from the album, her career has had particularly memorable moments, including leading the Chineke! Orchestra at the BBC Proms and conducting Kevin Thomas’s Firebird with the Collage Dance Collective as a part of The Kennedy Center’s “Reframing the Narrative.” Until 2023, Ms. Bovell was assistant conductor of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and conductor of the MSO Youth Orchestra. A longtime guest conductor of the ensemble, she led some of the MSO’s more memorable events, from sharing the stage with Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr. to conducting former Music Director Mei-Ann Chen’s farewell concerts. Prior to her four-year tenure with Memphis, Ms. Bovell’s professional debut came as the Chicago Sinfonietta’s assistant conductor in 2015, followed by cover conducting roles with St. Louis Symphony and Hartford Symphony. However, her 2018-2019 appointment as the music director at the Civic Orchestra of New Haven would serve as a first marker of Bovell’s potential. There, she elevated Civic Orchestra’s musicality and the diversity of its repertoire, all while increasing the size of

its roster. Further, she made her mark on the region through numerous guest conducting appearances, including Hartford Opera Theater, leading two short operas in its annual “New in November” festival. Much of Ms. Bovell’s artistic philosophy stems from her relatively delayed entry to the classical music world. Though Kalena showed promise as a violinist, a lack of musical resources meant her first private lesson would come at age 18. Her experience far behind the typical conservatory-trained musician, Kalena found a new home as a conductor, and worked six jobs to fund the many plane tickets, workshops, and conducting lessons required to excel. Hoping to inspire younger musicians, Ms. Bovell shares this unique journey to professional conducting as often as possible. A Los Angeles native, Ms. Bovell received an MM and graduate professional diploma in orchestral conducting from The Hartt School, where she studied with Edward Cumming. She holds a BME from the College of the Performing Arts at Chapman University, which honored her with a Distinguished Alumni award in 2021. Outside conducting, Ms. Bovell is a published poet and has increasingly interwoven her poetry with her music career. Her original poem, Tethered Voices, was performed by the University of Michigan Symphony Orchestra and set to music by James Lees III. Kalena makes her home in Memphis, Tenn., where she enjoys cooking, writing poetry, weight training, and trying new pizza places.

All-State Symphonic Band
Conductor: Douglas L. Phillips
Coordinator: Michael Weintraub
6:30pm-8pm
TCC, Ballroom A
Sponsored by FBA
Active and sought-after as a conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and mentor, Dr. Douglas L. Phillips’ career and life’s work as a music educator and conductor has been devoted to the study and performance of important and significant musical works of art with students and colleagues alike. His commitment to artistic music making at the highest level has been at the core of his work with musicians of all ages. As a result, Dr. Phillips is regularly engaged to conduct county and state honor bands, as well as work with middle school, high school, community, and college/university ensembles.
Combined Concert with All-State Middle School Band and All-State Concert Band
Douglas L. Phillips, DMA, is the music director and conductor of the Southern Winds symphonic band. Dr. Phillips succeeded his mentor, the founding and long-time music director and conductor of Southern Winds, the late Dr. Bobby Adams, as the ensemble’s leader in 2015. Southern Winds was formed to provide a performance medium for Central Florida area band directors, music teachers, and other musicians, including the Stetson University wind/brass/percussion faculty, Stetson alumni, professional players, local businesspeople, and other professionals. The ensemble had its inaugural performance on November 10, 2001, as a part of the Florida Bandmasters Association Hall of Fame weekend in Elizabeth Hall on the campus of Stetson University. Since that time, Southern Winds has performed annually as the featured ensemble for the FBA Hall of Fame Roll of Distinction Concert, was privileged to perform for the 2008 FMEA In-Service Clinic-Conference in Tampa, and regularly performs for the Florida Bandmasters Association Summer Conference. Honored by an invitation from the International Clarinet Association, Southern Winds served as the featured concert band at ClarinetFest® 2017 (July 2017) in Orlando and was honored to collaborate with four of the world’s preeminent clarinet soloists: Nicholas Baldeyrou, Julie DeRoche, Alex Fiterstein, and Anna Hashimoto.
In May 2023, after an extremely rewarding 25-year career as a professional music educator, Dr. Phillips retired from his full-time career in academia and joined the ranks of the self-employed,
All-State Symphonic Band
becoming a manufacturer’s product representative while also still continuing his work with music ensembles of all levels, advocating for music’s transformative value and importance in our schools and society, and continuing his service to the music education profession at large. For the final 11 years of his career in academia, Dr. Phillips was the director of bands and associate professor of music in the School of Music at Stetson University. In his position at Stetson, he served as music director and conductor of the University Symphonic Band and Concert Band, oversaw all aspects of the university’s comprehensive band program, served as an academic advisor, and taught courses in music education, wind band literature, and instrumental conducting. For many years during the summer months, Dr. Phillips served as a member of the faculty for several Stetson University Summer Music Camps as the conductor of the camps’ respective double-reed bands, clarinet choirs, saxophone choirs, flute choirs, and brass ensembles.
Prior to his appointment at Stetson, Dr. Phillips served as associate director of bands and assistant professor of music at Western Illinois University, associate director of bands at The University of Virginia, and taught public school in Florida, where he was director of bands at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville and director of instrumental music at Merritt Island High School in Merritt Island. Dr. Phillips was twice nominated as an Outstanding Academic Advisor at Western Illinois University and was awarded a Stetson University Top Hatter Award for Outstanding Organization Advisor. He maintains memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, the Florida Bandmasters Association, the Florida Music Education Association, the National Association for Music Education, the National Band Association, the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, is an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma, is a Sigma Alpha Iota Friend of the Arts, and is an elected member of Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity. Dr. Phillips holds degrees from the University of Miami Frost School of Music (DMA, instrumental conducting), Western Michigan University (MM, instrumental conducting), and Stetson University (BME). Doug Phillips is very happily married to Dr. Tammara K. Phillips, professional flutist, music educator, and the flute professor at Stetson University.

CODE OF CONDUCT
Student Curfew
1. Curfew for students on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights is from 11 pm until 6 am. Curfew for students on Saturday night begins at 11 pm or one hour after the end of the concert and lasts until 6 am. Curfew means that students must be in their rooms and remain there during the hours stated.
2. Thirty (30) minutes after curfew, students not in their assigned rooms will be subject to withdrawal. If curfew is violated, members from the violator(s)’ school component group will not be accepted for participation in the professional development conference the following year.
Student Conduct
1. Students in hotel rooms must remain reasonably quiet at all times, both day and night. People in neighboring rooms who are not connected with the conference may be trying to sleep. Television and radio may be played only with volume at low level.
2. Hotel rooms are bedrooms. Under no circumstances should students visit or entertain others of the opposite sex in their hotel rooms.
3. Hotel room doors should be locked at all times. Extreme care should be exercised near hotel windows, and nothing is to be thrown from windows. Students are not allowed on hotel roofs.
4. Chaperones should have all rooms checked before leaving hotels so that damages, if any, can be determined immediately.
5. Students are not to visit students in other hotels without the permission of a chaperone. Students are not allowed in cars except with chaperones.
6. No alcoholic beverage may be in students’ possession at any time.
7. Illegal use of drugs in any form is absolutely prohibited.
8. Use of tobacco products in public by students is prohibited.
9. Students should engage in activities of a group nature only. Under no circumstances are social dates involving students allowed.
10. Students should wear appropriate clothing, including shoes, at all times.
Registration and Chaperones
1. All participants (directors, students, chaperones, and guests) must be registered for the conference.
2. Only directors are to register their groups and pick up registration materials.
3. All participating students must be chaperoned. At least one chaperone other than the director is required for every six students.
4. If the director does not accompany a participating student from that student’s school, then the principal from that school must furnish a letter designating who is to be in charge of the student. The letter from the school should be addressed to the FMEA executive director and submitted with registration materials.
5. Student observers are not allowed to attend the conference. If any student observers are brought to the conference, the offending school’s participation in the conference may be eliminated the following year. (TRIM students and Conference Experience students registered and participating in sessions or working for the all-state concerts are exempt from this rule.)
6. All school music teachers must register for the conference as directors and be current members of FMEA. This includes directors of invited performing groups and mini-concerts and session presenters. All-state conductors from Florida schools, colleges, or universities must also be FMEA members. No current music teacher may register as a chaperone.
Rehearsals and Name Badges
1. Name badges must be worn at all times by students, directors, guests, and chaperones.
2. Lost badges may be replaced at the registration desk by the director only, who must appear in person and pay the appropriate fee. The original registration receipt must be shown to obtain replacement badges.
3. Each component president is responsible for the policing of his or her groups and rehearsals.
