Honoring a legendary philanthropist Stanford Lipsey Scholarship Fund Stanford Lipsey is best known in our community as the longtime publisher of The Buffalo News. In the business of breaking news and headlines, he was a quintessential newsman who successfully ran the newspaper for almost 30 years. However, the real story that captures Lipsey’s life is his legacy of philanthropy that continues to move Buffalo forward today.

By establishing the Stanford Lipsey Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation, this group of business leaders makes it possible for students to achieve their dreams of earning a college degree. At the same time, the partnership with the Community Foundation allows them to maximize their generosity without any administrative burdens.

Although he was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, Lipsey called Buffalo home. Here, he is credited with playing major roles in saving the H.H. Richardson Complex and restoring Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin Martin House. A pioneer at the time, Lipsey advocated for Buffalo and recognized its Stanford Lipsey potential to recreate itself long before our region showed signs of the resurgence we enjoy today.

“We are not in the business of knowing how to run a foundation and the Community Foundation brings that expertise to our group,” said Chris Ross, CPA, a member of 43 x 79. “The team does the heavy lifting for us so we can stay focused on our day jobs.”

Lipsey was also a champion for education. As a member of 43 x 79, a group of local businesspeople interested in supporting Western New York, he convinced his fellow members to establish a scholarship for students in need. The group unanimously embraced the idea and decided to name the scholarship fund in his honor.

In November of 2016, Lipsey passed away at the age of 89. This scholarship is carrying on his charitable legacy and supporting his love of education and Buffalo. “This is Stan’s vision coming to life: helping people reach their potential,” said O’Neil-White.

Building for the future People Inc. “I will be somewhere — a party, a meeting, anywhere — and I will mention I am from People Inc., and someone around me will say, ‘Oh, my daughter has been a client for 14 years’ or ‘I know someone who works there.’ It really puts in perspective just how many people our organization impacts,” said Nancy Dobson, Chair of the People Inc. Foundation Board. It seems that just about everyone in our community knows someone whose life has been touched by People Inc. For nearly 50 years, People Inc. has been evolving to serve an expanding group of individuals in our community. The organization was founded to address the needs of people with intellectual disabilities, and today it serves more than 12,000 clients with disabling conditions or special needs each year. To remain strong now and in the future requires planning for long-term financial sustainability, which is precisely why People Inc. decided to establish its first endowment at the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. “We are constantly growing and changing. A lot of the time, we are staying ahead of the curve before the rules are even written,” said Denise Bienko, Vice President at People Inc. and Executive Director of the People Inc. Foundation. “An endowment at the Community Foundation is one way we can invest now, grow that investment over time and provide long-term stability for our organization’s future.”

“We talked about planned giving for a long time and chose to partner with the Community Foundation to start our endowment for a number of reasons,” said Rhonda Frederick, President and CEO of People Inc. “Not only do we have flexibility to use the funds as we see fit, but the Community Foundation’s team is constantly bringing national best practices back to our region. I believe our missions are completely aligned.” People Inc. can rely on the Community Foundation as a cost-effective partner with proven investment performance to make the most of their donors’ generosity. “It is important to have people who are in the business of philanthropy as your partners,” said Bienko. “We have found that with the Community Foundation.”

Giving the gift of a lifetime William & Ida Christie Fund for Music For Cheryl Christie, talking about her mother, Ida, is like music to her ears. “My mother was always a musician and it was her goal in life to foster a love of music in children,” recalled Cheryl. Ida Christie was drawn to music from a young age. She played the flute and piano and was also an accomplished vocalist. Ida won a full scholarship to attend the esteemed Oberlin Conservatory of Music. But as the eldest of six children in the shadows of the Great Depression, she felt she was needed at home and turned down her scholarship. Ida then took it upon herself to cultivate a life filled with music. She married Cheryl’s father, William, when she was 23, and he was quickly swept up in Ida’s love of music. “He was the nonmusical one in the family and tone deaf. But alongside my mother, he was an absolute patron of the arts his whole life,” said Cheryl. Throughout their more than six decades of marriage, the Christies continued to support the arts in Western New York. They volunteered for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and donated a grand piano to the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, a Buffalo public school committed to helping students pursue their artistic talents. Ida also served as the choir director at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for many years. On Ida’s 80th birthday, William decided to give his wife the gift of a lifetime. Through the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, William established the

William & Ida Christie Fund for Music, a fund dedicated to making Ida’s dream of exposing children to music a reality. The fund enabled the Christie family to provide resources directly to organizations that give children access to music. After Ida passed away, Cheryl took on the responsibility of making grants from the fund on behalf of her two brothers, in accordance with her mother’s wishes. “I want to do exactly what the fund was set up to do, and that is to support music education. With the Community Foundation, it is easy and literally a two-click process,” said Cheryl. The fund was a cherished birthday present that continues to give back the gift of music to children throughout our community. Today, Cheryl and her brothers, Gary and William Jr., continue to contribute to the fund to carry on the family’s charitable legacy. “A true gift from my loving father to my mother, this touched her heart because she knew her love of music would carry on forever,” said Cheryl. “She was just pleased as punch.”

Providing for their hometown and beyond Henry W. & Martha L. Bruner Philanthropic Fund Henry “Bill” and Martha “Marty” Bruner have been happily married for more than 53 years and live with their cat, Howard, in Ohio. The Bruners both share a love of giving back to others, a value instilled in them by their parents, which they plan to pass on to their two children. “We both learned young that the way to go is to give back to others for what you have been given,” said Marty.

The Bruners decided they wanted to find a way to help Marty’s birthplace of Western New York. They consulted with their financial advisor, who introduced them to the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.

The couple met as young graduate students at the University of Chicago and quickly bonded over their similar backgrounds.

With the help of the Community Foundation, they established the Henry W. & Martha L. Bruner Philanthropic Fund to support causes important to them, such as promoting racial equity in Buffalo.

Marty was raised along the shore of Lake Erie in Angola, New York. Her father was an attorney and was an example to her of how she wanted to live her life. He spent countless hours volunteering at the fire department and their neighborhood school.

“It warms my heart that through the Community Foundation we can stay connected to Western New York and improve the quality of life in my hometown, all while giving to organizations throughout the country,” said Martha.

Bill, who was born in Chicago and raised in Wisconsin, had a similar upbringing to his wife. He saw his mother give her time to the local school board before eventually becoming its president.

The Bruners’ fund is a living legacy for their daughter and son to carry on the family’s tradition of generosity.

After they married, the couple raised their family in Elyria, Ohio, where they continued their tradition of helping others, rooted in their strong faith. Marty worked as a high school teacher and volunteers as an organist at her church, while Bill, a pastor, provides ministry services in prisons.

“I had been given so many advantages, I wanted to give back to people who had not had the same advantages,” explained Bill.

Creating change in their community forever Scharf - Van Heusen Fund Larry Van Heusen has a vivid memory of his mother spending precious pocket change to buy him an issue of Time magazine in the 1960s that included articles about Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement. “I remember seeing the National Urban League button in the magazine and when I could not get my hands on one, I made my own so I could wear it to school,” said Larry. That experience instilled in him a lifelong drive to learn and teach others about the importance of racial equity. Larry’s commitment to giving back in a thoughtful way is one of the many qualities he has in common with his longtime partner and husband, Robert Scharf. Robert, who goes by Bob, and Larry met at an Albany, New York, church in 1975 and celebrated their union on the same day 25 years later. In 1978, Bob began work in Buffalo as a bank systems analyst. Larry joined him after 1987, accepting a job as a social worker, where he spent time working on both the East Side and West Side of Buffalo. Through his job, Larry saw firsthand the effects that systemic inequities have on different populations in our region. The couple has given back during their lifetime to many causes that are important to them and want to ensure that this legacy of giving will be carried on after their lifetimes.

“Over time we have seen how the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo is truly committed to making sure our passions are supported. Instead of giving to separate organizations ourselves, we are able to tell the Community Foundation exactly who we want to support and how. It is so flexible,” said Larry. Through the Community Foundation, Bob and Larry hope that by directing some assets to support the changing needs in our community, their legacy will transform lives beyond what anyone can envision today. “I wonder if there is some innate problem we are not looking at that defies solution. Maybe with our funds, some genius will come along and say, ‘We need to do this instead,’ and things will change,” said Bob.

To facilitate long-term transformative change in our region, the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo prioritizes its leadership work guided by community goals developed through a strategic planning process. In 2017, the Board of Directors went through a comprehensive re-examination of the Community Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s four community goals. That process included working with partners to engage with more than 60 community leaders, representatives from close to 300 nonprofit organizations and more than 800 community residents through interviews, focus groups and surveys. Qualitative and quantitative data were analyzed to provide a snapshot of the state of our region. As a result of this research, the Board refined the community goals. The next 10 pages of this report show a snapshot of our leadership work focused on advancing these goals.

Co-creating transformative community change Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Roundtable Bringing positive change to a community is a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week job. This notion is universally embraced by all 37 members of the Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Roundtable, who are committed to advancing racial equity in our community. By partnering with 125 local organizations, the Roundtable looks to create opportunities for all to reach their full potential, recognizing this work requires a collaborative community effort. In late 2016, the Roundtable released a report entitled The Racial Equity Dividend: Buffalo’s Great Opportunity. The report documents how systemic disparities in the Greater Buffalo region create differential outcomes by race and

quantifies how our entire region will grow when we achieve racial equity. With leadership from the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, the Roundtable set forth an eight-point agenda to begin addressing racial equity disparities. A few highlights of the Roundtable’s achievements are: • The establishment of five coalitions, including the My Brother’s Keeper/ Boys and Young Men of Color Coalition, which attracted national attention for its work to advance the lives of young men of color. The next two pages detail this Coalition’s inspiring progress.

• By the end of 2017, more than 850 individuals representing 64 organizations had participated in the Racial Equity Impact Analysis training. The training educates organizations about how to insert a racial equity lens into their decisionmaking processes so that policies, practices and procedures benefit all racial/ethnic groups. • The Roundtable joined the Buffalo Niagara Partnership and the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County to launch Employ Buffalo Niagara. This initiative will establish a workforce development system aligned with employer opportunities to create a strong, more inclusive workforce. • In partnership with Erie County and with technical assistance from the Council of State Governments, the Roundtable’s Reentry Coalition commissioned a groundbreaking report that assessed the services and resources available in Erie County for the reentry population. The report provides a strategy to make improvements to the quality and delivery of reentry services that will begin implementation in 2018.

While everyone recognizes we have a long way to go, the work of the Racial Equity Roundtable is attracting significant local and national support and recognition of its progress. For example, in July of 2017, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation announced a major investment in Buffalo to advance racial equity through the Community Foundation. The investment was awarded in two parts. The first is a $1 million grant that will help fund the work of the Roundtable over the next five years. The second part of the investment is a $1 million endowment match to create a sustainable stream of funding for racial equity work. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation is matching private contributions dollar for dollar up to $1 million. This truly transformative, collaborative work happening right now in our community will accelerate shared prosperity for all of us for generations to come.

Fulfilling one’s full potential My Brother’s Keeper/ Boys and Young Men of Color Coalition It is rare to find a group of teenagers voluntarily spending their weekends in school. However, a dedicated group of boys and men of color spent many Saturdays together in a classroom developing a plan to empower young men of color to be agents of change in our community. The My Brother’s Keeper (MBK)/ Boys and Young Men of Color Coalition was established in 2016 as a key initiative of the Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Roundtable. Under the guidance of PolicyLink, a national think tank focused on advancing racial and economic equity, the Coalition determined that it would focus on elevating the voices of boys and young men of color through the creation of youth leadership councils. From there, a Youth Leadership Planning Committee was formed, including voices of boys and young men, to develop the process for applying to the councils and a plan to recruit members. It was a natural fit to anchor this work at Say Yes Buffalo given the progress Say Yes has made in engaging with Buffalo students to increase high school and postsecondary completion rates. In fact, since Say Yes Buffalo launched in 2012, the four-year high school graduation rate for young men of color has increased by 17 percentage points.

Our community’s early successes in reaching young men of color caught the attention of a national partner, Cities United. Cities United worked with the Youth Leadership Planning Committee to tap into this powerful youth voice. The young men decided to name the council “Breaking Barriers” and they began recruiting council members in late 2017. This story is to be continued as the “Breaking Barriers” youth leadership council comes together and starts to advocate for racial equity, social justice and policy change in our community.

Championing arts and culture Whether a performance on a local stage has taken your breath away or you have felt goosebumps walking through any number of local historic landmarks, there is no question that arts, architecture and culture make our region an inspiring place to live. While there is certainly an emotional payoff to experiencing the arts, there is compelling new data that quantifies the economic impact the nonprofit arts and culture sector has on Western New York. In a report compiled by the Arts Services Initiative of Western New York with the Americans for the Arts and released in 2017, data confirmed that our arts and culture sector is a $352 million industry that supports more than 10,000 jobs. The report was funded partially by the Fund for the Arts, a group of funders convened by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, which includes public, private, family and corporate foundations joining forces to make a greater impact together. Started more than a decade ago, the Fund for the Arts has distributed more than $2.6 million to strengthen the arts and culture sector.

Recognizing the significant economic impact that arts and culture have in our community, the Community Foundation is committed to strengthening the region as a center for architecture, arts and culture through its community goals. Over the last five years, the Community Foundation has more than doubled the investment it makes in our region to advance this goal. By supporting important cultural projects and institutions, we are strengthening our community for future generations.

Nestled on the shore of Lake Erie just south of Buffalo, you will find the Graycliff Conservancy. In 2017, the Community Foundation provided a grant to Graycliff to support interior restoration work and a landscape project. Graycliff, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Darwin and Isabelle Martin, is going through a transformational restoration that will continue to build our regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reputation as a key destination for Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiasts around the world.

Growing a tradition of giving Emerging Philanthropists of Color© A tradition of giving is growing because of the commitment of a talented group of people in our community. The Emerging Philanthropists of Color© (EPC) is comprised of 34 energetic and entrepreneurial individuals of color who gather together to form a giving circle, a philanthropic group that donates its time and money as it learns about the art of giving. Launched in 2013 by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo’s Communities of Giving Legacy Initiative (CGLI) to increase social impact and showcase the power of endowments, EPC meets monthly to design and manage its grant process, which looks to support organizations that serve urban neighborhoods. To put their learning into practice, the members of EPC reviewed applications and selected two organizations to receive grants. The recipients of the 2017 EPC grants were Amor and Heritage Traditional Hispanic Dance Company and the Buffalo Arts Studio. Amor and Heritage provides summer dance classes to children ages four through 12 and teaches diversity through dance. The Buffalo Arts Studio, a studio space in Buffalo, offers a 10-month-long after-school program for students to learn about and appreciate many art forms.

In addition to funding and overseeing its own grant process, EPC provides networking, and personal and professional development opportunities for its members. This past year, members of the group attended a conference in Atlanta and participated in the fifth annual Pay It Forward Awards, an event sponsored by the Communities of Giving Legacy Initiative that recognizes individuals and organizations who have made a commitment to Western New York’s communities of color. EPC is proud of its commitment to our community and continues to grow in membership, educating more and more members of the next generation of philanthropists.

Promoting healthy housing Green and Healthy Home Initiative (GHHI) The health and safety of a home are fundamental in determining the well-being and future success of a child. Our region has long been hailed for our beautiful, historical housing. However, the charm that our older neighborhoods exude comes with a responsibility to ensure that the aging structures are free of home health hazards like lead, mold, asbestos and pests that put families at risk. Children are especially vulnerable to these hazards that can cause

life altering conditions like lead poisoning and chronic asthma. That is why the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo has been engaging community partners and funding programs designed to address home health since 2007. Regardless of race, ethnicity or socioeconomic status, all children should have the opportunity to live in homes that are healthy, safe, energy efficient and sustainable.

2017 Highlights and Accomplishments • The Community Foundation, along with our partners in the Green and Healthy Homes Initiative, was awarded $2 million through Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Buffalo Billion II to create homeownership opportunities on Buffalo’s East Side and in the Town of Cheektowaga. This program will assist approximately 200 families that are at risk of losing their homes by providing access to weatherization, repair and home health programs, including lead remediation. • In June, the Community Foundation, in conjunction with NYSERDA, convened nearly 100 national thought leaders and representatives of philanthropies, nonprofits and government to explore opportunities for strengthening partnerships and maximizing the impact of aligned health, energy and housing interventions. • Erie County, the City of Buffalo and the Community Foundation partnered to launch the “Renovate Right” public awareness campaign, which encouraged homeowners to use lead safe work practices when doing home renovation and repairs. The billboards were positioned 26

throughout the City of Buffalo and Erie County and provided information to connect residents to resources. • I n partnership with five foundations, the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County, the City of Buffalo and Erie County, the Community Foundation has been engaged in the development of the Lead Action Plan. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of lead poisoning data for community stakeholders, decision-makers and funders. It is intended to serve as a roadmap to strategically guide the resources, policies and practices needed to eliminate lead poisoning in Buffalo and Erie County. •T o better achieve long-lasting, systemic change, the Community Foundation, with the support of the Western New York Coalition to Prevent Childhood Lead Poisoning, has engaged in proactive advocacy measures. These public policy initiatives include allowing school nurses access to students’ blood lead data and encouraging New York State to enforce the Repair, Renovation and Painting rule to ensure that contractors are using lead safe work practices.

Our Approach to Charitable Investments The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo’s Investment Committee has oversight of more than $400 million in charitable assets. Members of the Committee are specifically recruited because of their knowledge of investments. They receive advice throughout the year from our independent investment consulting firm Colonial Consulting, LLC, which specializes in advising large endowments and foundations. Together, they work to

allocate the charitable assets entrusted to the Community Foundation’s care into a highly diversified mix of global equities, fixed income and alternative investment strategies. This includes 43 different investment management organizations pursuing strategies within 13 different asset classes. Within each asset class, the Community Foundation seeks to utilize world-class investment managers with a goal of outperforming appropriate target market benchmarks over long periods.

Investment Performance The investments of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo regularly outperform our benchmarks, on average adding 6.1 percent per year over the last 10 years. Investing a fund in the Community Foundation portfolio provides stability and growth over time. This growth provides significant value to the charitable assets entrusted to the Community Foundation. In 2017, the investment pool posted a 16.1 percent gain for the year. As an organization, the Community Foundation remains focused on long-term investment results, which continue to be

very strong. These results are the product of the Community Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision to maintain a strategy that is driven by longterm objectives while utilizing the size of its asset pool to access exceptionally capable investment management firms. Over the last decade, the results of the portfolio have produced a large return premium with a cumulative return of 80.8 percent, significantly exceeding that of the benchmark. This is an example of the power of generating premium returns over long periods of time while meaningfully enhancing the power of charitable capital in the region.

HOW IT WORKS:

This endowment was established with $2.1 million in 1978 through a legacy gift (bequest) to the Community Foundation from a parent in honor of his son who died tragically as a young man.

Today, decades after both father and son have passed on, the initial gift has more than tripled to $7.4 million, all while giving $8.3 million in grants to the organizations they cared about. Their fund will continue to honor this familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s charitable giving legacy by making grants to their favorite organizations in their name, forever.

Gordon R. Gross, Esq. Award Known for his commitment to community, his philanthropic endeavors and support of the Community Foundation, Gerard “Jerry” Mazurkiewicz, CPA, was named the 2017 recipient of the Gordon R. Gross, Esq. Award.

As a tax partner at Dopkins & Company, LLP, Jerry provides his clients with invaluable income tax and estate planning advice and often introduces clients looking for philanthropic opportunities to the Community Foundation.

Established in 2013, this award recognizes a professional advisor who represents the Community Foundation’s mission to drive positive change in our community. The award’s namesake and first recipient, Gordon R. Gross, Esq., a longtime friend of the Community Foundation, continues to make immeasurable contributions to Western New York.

Jerry has consistently demonstrated a tireless commitment to helping our community. He has held leadership roles at almost a dozen local nonprofit organizations and gives his time and shares his talents to make our region a better place.

Like Gordon, Jerry embodies the ideal of giving back to the region, both personally and professionally.

Strengthening a community Niagara Area Foundation It is believed the name Niagara was derived from the Iroquois word Onguiaahra, which means “thunder of waters” or “the strait.” Figuratively, the name Niagara has come to signify strength. The Niagara Area Foundation, founded in 2000, seeks to live up to its name. Established as a division of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, it is led by a group of eight volunteer Council members dedicated to strengthening the Niagara region by addressing critical needs in order to improve lives. Through the years, the Niagara Area Foundation has granted more than $1 million to local organizations that support the arts, civic needs, community development, education, the environment and health and human services. In 2017, the Council prioritized providing grants to youth development programs that were able to demonstrate how they work collaboratively, and bring positive change to their community by helping young people achieve their full potential. Spreading a communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wings Wyoming Foundation Established by Dr. James MacCallum in 1974, the Wyoming Foundation was formed to improve the quality of life for Wyoming County residents. More than 40 years later, it continues to serve the region in many ways, whether it is by providing a way for residents to maximize their charitable giving to causes they care about most or by supporting local organizations through its competitive grants process. As a division of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo for the past 10 years, the Wyoming Foundation has expanded its philanthropic scope and identified more ways to better serve county residents. Today, it supports arts and cultural programs and prepares youth to graduate from high school with training and educational opportunities.

This year, the Wyoming Foundation supported a unique initiative to connect local libraries with historical societies. By bringing these organizations together, there is more coordination that provides residents with easier access to historical and genealogical records. The Wyoming Foundation also leads the Thiel Roundtable, a group of health care professionals working to address the medical needs in the area. Supported by the William F. Thiel Fund, the group meets every quarter to discuss the latest developments as they pertain to Wyoming County health care. In October, it convened the second annual Thiel Roundtable Care Coordination Summit to help health care workers network and learn best practices to improve patient care. At her death in 1975, a widow gifted $400,000 to the Community Foundation to create a fund as a tribute to her beloved late husband. Originally from Germany, the couple made Buffalo their home and she wished to take care of their adopted community in perpetuity. By the end of 2017, the fund had grown to $1.5 million and had granted out $1.7 million to support the changing needs of our community. 50
